Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

I was able to watch the first 3 hours of the race.  I saw the leading men, Lisa, Marion, Maureen and Smooth just once, Mary Anne three times, and Josse 4.  I met Crockett, Rivertonpaul, and Amber during the race.  It was really fun.  It was the first marathon I have been a spectator for.  Props to Hyrum for a great second race.

You where the very best cheerleader of all, thanks! I would get at least 3 opinions before you get any kind of surgery.

It was great to see you! Couldn't miss you with the crutches at your feet. Thanks for coming out to encourage us, it boosted our spirits and hope it did the same to you. I've posted my race report.

Thanks so much for being there for us. It really meant a lot and you were an awesome cheerleader. I can only imagine how bittersweet this was for you - but give you big credit for thinking of all of us.

From LuzyLew on Sat, Jun 13, 2009 at 18:26:20 from 69.169.165.206

I know you didn't remember me, but I raised my arms to say THANK you for being there with the FRB road sign. I ran my first marathon post injury today and I had no expectations, but I felt grateful to be out there. I hope you will heal up soon, and be well. What you did to day was deeply appreciated. Thank you for cheering us FRB'ers on!

I do too remember you, you goose (sorry reading gone with the wind, Scarlett always called people "goose"). How could I forget such compassion from you at Sasha's party. I had you on my list of people to look out for, but I must not have recognized you. I was wondering where you were. I guess I wasn't sure of your pace so didn't know where to pick you out. I'm glad I was somewhat of a help even though my cheer for you was of a generic sort. I rose my crutches up for Josse, Marion and Maurine, the ultimate sign of respect (or exasperation) from a cripple :)

From MichelleL on Sat, Jun 13, 2009 at 18:58:14 from 71.35.250.200

Maurine - it was mostly sweet, and fun, and I wish I could have cheered you guys on more. Did Marion check her phone mid race? I sent her a text when I thought she'd be about half way and hoped she'd check it.

From Maurine/Tarzan on Sat, Jun 13, 2009 at 18:59:34 from 97.117.76.29

Michelle - I don't think she carried her phone. As her official sherpa we relied on my cell phone.

The sight of you raising your crutches in honor of us will live long in my marathon memories!

Michelle,

It's Lulu; I don't know if you remember me, I believe I have commented on your blog a long time ago. My heart breaks when I read about your SI stuggles. I stopped blogging for a long time, nearly a year and when I came back you were having this trouble. I too have struggled for years (five) with SI issues.

I am very concerned about you. I know how depressing this kind of injury is because of the intense pain all the time and the interference with sleep, which exacerbates feelings of depression.

I may have come in the middle of all this and I may not have gotten all the facts right. So I have some questions. Have you tried an SI belt? I mean a really good one. Also, have you seen a pain management specialist?

I recently had my joint injected with pain killer and steroids with tremendous success. I have had it done before and it was very successful then, but didn't take my pain away completely like it did now. I had 3 rounds of prolotherapy about 4 years ago that were moderately successful. Recently, I simply found a person who knew how to completely solve my problem. Consider finding a good physiatrist (there is a ton of stuff they can do) and a pain management specialist before having surgery.

Enough about me. Write me back on my blog and perhaps we can exchange info about this problem. Yours sounds similar to mine, and I finally found some relief with the right PT and pain management and three SI belts until I found the right one.

I use my SI belt mostly at night now. Take care and good luck, my dear.

Hi there Michelle.

Just read your last couple of entries. My heart goes out to you.

I can't tell you how impressed I am that you went and cheered everyone on during the marathon. You are one incredible woman.

I know that a lot of people have given you a lot of ideas about why certain things happens and for what certain reasons, and certainly there is something to that. But, I also believe that sometimes things happen just because our bodies are imperfect. I am in no position to say why this has happened to you, but man I wish there was something I could do to change it.

Once again, I am so impressed that you went out and cheered everyone on. That says so much about your character and although I have always been impressed with you, I am more impressed than ever.

You are amazing.

Hope you found some joy in today.

Hey Michelle,

Thanks for saying hi. Allie told me about you; I'm sorry you are injured...it sounds pretty serious. But it also sounds like you are being as patient as possible and "struggling well."

I hope you get well soon and can start running again.

Take Care,

Nan

Michelle

Thanks for cheering for me. It was great to see you. I'm so sorry to read about all the trouble you're having. I really hope you can get back on the road soon.

I wished I would have felt better and my time would have been faster, but when I saw you I was just glad to be running. I had an injury once that took me out for almost a year. It's very hard, physically and mentally. Hang in there.

Michelle,

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you standing there cheering enthusiastically in the canyon. I have always admired you. You have shown us so much strength and characters. It takes a lot of hearts and guts to do what you did. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for coming to support us and most importantly for being who you are.

Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. You will triumph over this. LOVE YOU, Smooth!
