Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Appt w/ Dr. McLane.

She's perplexed, took alot of time with me, called the radiologist who read my mri during my appt to discuss.  It was shocking again to see my MRI images side by side, my more recent one has much bigger and brighter uptake on both sides of the joint.  My lab tests came back negative, except the SI tap culture won't come back until Monday.  We are going to use the surgeon as a second opinion of sorts.  The surgeons office gave me a July 27th appt a couple of weeks ago, with some pressure Dr. McLane got it moved to July 13th, but she also left a VM for the surgeon to try to get me in earlier and explain my case.  He has access to the MRI images.  I'll call Dr. McLane Monday for the culture results and to see if the surgeon called her back.  She said I "probably" could run again after surgury, but it depends on what the surgeon does, and it would require recovery time.  She said there's a slight chance my sacrum and ilium are fusing.  She sent in another lab test to test for that.

Oh, yeah, and I am now in a wheel chair.  I only have one and its in my home (I am sitting in it).  I guess I will be trying more extreme demobilization between now and when I meet with the surgeon.

Michelle - I wish I knew what to say and I'm sure you wish you knew the answers. You were one of the big people I prayed for the other day on my run with God.

I am so sorry to hear about all of this nasty news. But you are one tough woman and you will get through this! I think we need to have another party and get your mind off all of this crap!

Michelle,

Okay, I think we all agree that a party is necessary. How does Saturday the 27th work? We will of course have to finalize dinner plans, etc. but would that date work? Hang in there :) Sounds like they are making steps on getting you all put back together again!!

Oh Michelle I am so sorry to hear that its still hurting and possible surgery. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make it all better!

Michelle, so the surgery would be to put a pin in your joint? What is that supposed to do? Do they think that the bone is moving around too much and causing a bunch of inflammation in the joint area?

As much of a hassle as it might be, I would definately get a second opinion (maybe at the orthopedic center at U of U) before I had surgery ... just to make sure. Most insurance will cover this and surgeons understand about why you might want this.

Hugs to you.

By they way -- one of my friends from Nashville (Amy Barrow -- look her up, she has been written about many times) had both of her hips replaced. She is back to running and is still ranked as one of the top US Master's runners. Doctors really don't know about athletes and what they can and can't do after surgeries ... so often they will simply tell you not to do it, but not because they know that you shouldn't.

I am sure Amy would be happy to talk to you - just let me know and I will put you two in contact with eachother ... her problem was different from yours (she had osteoarthritis) - but she can tell you how to navigate through the doctors who don't know what you can and can't do.
