This was a 16 mile long run that was NOT continuous, but I'm counting it anyway. First of all it was on a treadmill. I had to do something to break this up mentally. It was really 3 mid-distance runs back to back. It is still too cold for my lungs the breath the air outside. Sometimes it is even cold on the treadmill in my basement. Anyway this is what I did: Started at 6.3 on the treadmill (9:30 pace) for 2 miles. Then increased to 6.4 for 2 more miles. (4 miles) Short Break- bathroom, switch, start and fold a load of laundry. Drank a sip of water I continued running6.5 for 2 more miles then increased to 6.6 for 2 and then 6.7 for 2 miles. (6 total) Longer Break- switch, start and fold a load of laundry, pick out David's ski clothes, make omelets (Mark brought soup home. He's the best! Mark- love you and thank you!). Ate soup. Got everyone out the door. I started at 6.8 and then kept increasing speed until I ended at 7.3 (8:13 pace). The increase in pace was really because I was running out of time because of the 2 breaks. At least this run was "Better 'N Nuttin!"

These long runs are not pretty but at least I'm trying. 6 miles on treadmill -> run up and switch laundry. laundry broken and flooded all over. ARGH! 1 more mile on treadmill 5 miles outside with Mark and Gunner. Nice and sunny. still really cold! 6 more miles by myself. I finally started to warm up however, the cold really gets to my lungs. I'm guessing I averaged 9:30 pace. Used the NIKE app for part of the run. It is definitely doesn't compare to the Garmin, but totally worth the $1.99. I've tried to figure out how to make my own adjustments with this app.

Pace average apron. 9.38 from total time including all stops and breaks. Ran 5 mile franklin loop. repeated hill 2 times. stopped at home for water, bathroom, check the laundry and email for a couple minutes. ran 8 mile kirkway loop. lots of hills! finished up with 1 more mile in the neighborhood. (I think one reason running a race is easier and pace is faster for me than training is because I don't have to multitask. I can just relax and run and not worry about laundry). My iPhone is becoming my new running partner. I use the Nike App. It's nice having Lance Armstrong and others cheering me on periodically. It's only limitation is that it's distance is not very accurate when I talk on the phone. It stops the distance while the clock keeps ticking. I'm ok with that though because I already know the distance of most of my runs. I also use my phone to make phone calls while running, listen to books on tape. I haven't loaded it with music yet. (probably b/c I lost 11 Gigs of music with my computer upgrade- arghh). Two nights ago I was multi tasking with the iPhone while Cheryl coached me on making her homemade MacN Cheese. I screamed as I watched my phone slip into the boiling cheese sauce. I spent the rest of the night carefully cleaning out the headphone hole with a safety pin and running a hair dryer over the device. The sound only worked in speaker mode and if I tilted it a certain way and spoke loudly into the mic. I thought I was going to have to go to the Apple store again! The next morning, MIRACLE of MIRACLES, the phone and all apps worked! Someone is watching out for me. :) I write all this because I was really grateful for my iPhone running partner today. I was also so grateful that I could be outside! This winter has been mild and so different from the past three. I can actually crawl out of the dungeon on a winter day and run in fresh air. I love that I live in a beautiful place! The lakes, dirt roads, interesting homes, trees, rolling hills, birds, fill me with joy!

I was feeling sick over the weekend. I finally had a little energy today for a run. It feels like spring! Aubree and I ran 11 miles together then she picked up the kids from pre-school. She did heavy lifting by pushing two kids in the stroller, uphills, against traffic, over dirt paths etc. I continued to push just her baby in the stroller for a couple more miles. The wind was pretty intense. I got some great resistance training running against the wind with a stroller. On the back side of the wind at one point I was literally lifted off my feet! I wondered if that is how it would feel to be Mary Poppins. My hips were achey. I didn't think about packing Advil, salt tabs, or nutrition. Luckily, Aubree had some Powerbar energy chews. Next time I will try and be more prepared. It was nice to be outside.

I had ok sleep last night. I went to bed early, however was up with my little one 3 times. So, I changed today's workout to pace instead of speed. I wore the heart knee-high compression socks that Cheryl gave me for Valentine's Day. Thanks Cher-I felt the love. 5 miles @ 8:00 pace on treadmill. I'm in the habit of skipping warm up, cool down, and stretching. I'll try to at least warm up on the next workout. Always room for improvement. I need to pat myself on the back though for thinking ahead and drinking water today!

Aubree and i warmed up around the pre-school and then set up a picnic for all the kids at the bottom of the Franklin sledding hill. The weather was gorgeous! Another sunny day and perfect venue for doing hill repeats and watching children at the same time! 7xhill repeats. 4 up 3 down. This was killer! I thought I was going to have a heart attack at the top of the hill. It's a lot steeper than it looks. I was suppose to run fast down as well but I had to put the breaks on so I didn't wipe out. We ate a healthy lunch, however, the fresh donuts for desserts pretty much negated everything! Next stop was the running store with all the kids. We loaded up on GU and Jelly Beans. I had a running shopping high that lasted the rest of the day!

I didn't get a lot of sleep the last three nights. Mark and I underestimated how long it would take to help David with his first Pinewood Derby car. With that said, another group effort was needed to get me through a long run. Craig did all the preschool driving so Aubree and I could run. We ran 16 miles together-(Kirkway loop twice). Aubree had to go to work and Craig watched the kids so I could finish 6 more miles (Franklin loop). Pace average 9:21 This was the first run with GU and jelly beans. I tried the Powerbar chomps too. Didn't like them for long runs. I'm trying to figure out my nutrition for the marathon. Here is my plan. Prerace- oatmeal, banana, 4 Advil mile 6- 1/2 Gu, 1/2 Jelly Beans mile 10- 1/2 Gu, gum mile 14- Jelly Beans mile 18- 1/2 Gu, 1/2 Jelly Beans mile 21- 1/2 Gu, gum mile 23- Jelly Beans That's 500 calories. Anyone know when you take the salt tablets?

On the drive to school, David told me that he needed electrical tape for his class. I didn't have time to drive there so I decided to alter my route and drop it off during my run. Again, I'm doing errands during long runs! I wasn't sure what my pace was the entire time because when I talk on the phone it messes up the Nike app. I'm trying to figure it out right now with google maps, my stop watch option on my phone, and an online pace calculator. preschool to elementary school - 5.5 miles. 4.5 minute break at the school to drop of the electrical tape, go to the bathroom, and get a sip of water. Elementary school to Aubree's house - 2.4 miles. 8.5 minute break. Aubree had the best aid station at her house loaded with GU, beans, oranges. She is so thoughtful! I spent way too long of a break because it was so fun to eat and talk. I also checked out my course on her internet. Aubree's house back to preschool - 7.6 miles Finished up with repeat underdogs to all the little girls on the swings! ha ha! Total time 1:39:10 - at least 13 + minutes of break time not including all the stop lights. Overall pace average from start to finish including stops - 8:59 Actually running pace average minus stops - 8:08 This doesn't include the distance running in and out of both schools. These are the runs that I wish I had a Garmin to figure out all these stats! This isn't totally accurate. It is taking me almost as long as I ran to figure all this out! Hahaha! All I know is that I felt like I was flying during actual run time and wonder if I was really at sub 8 minute pace. It felt more like a tempo run. This was not by choice and not fun running against the clock! All I kept thinking was "I have to get to the school for David and preschool before noon to pick up Kate." Maybe that is the trick...have my children at the end of a race with a pick up deadline. It may not be fun or pretty, but I will give it my all to be there for them!

I was happy to run with Kimberlee again. I jump at any chance to run with her when she is in town. (She is the friend I wrote about who is letting me "babysit" her treadmill for the winter). Just a couple minutes into our run, Kimberlee and I met a woman who warned us that her dog was loose. About 400m later the dog ran up to us. Kimberlee held the dog while we both walked back until the owner came back with her car. It is the least we could do. The dog was really sweet and it's the only way I can pay back all the people who have done the same for me with our dog. We had to cut the run short because Kimberlee had to catch a flight. We ran 6.48 miles in 59:57. Pace average 9:14. That's including all the time we took with the dog. Not sure what our real pace was but it felt fast. Definitely faster than our early morning, freezing cold, winter runs! It could have been because we were trying to make up lost time. I also had a lot of adrenaline from having to discuss home improvements right before the run. But that is another story... I came home and finished 1.5 miles on the treadmill to make it to 8 miles. This was at 8:00 pace. By the way, Kimberlee, Baby Tready is doing well. Thanks again! Side Note: I'm losing my toenail again. This is the 3rd time with this toenail! I guess that is one consequence of having an "artistic" toe. (When the second is longer than the big toe). It was accidentally stepped on it after the run. All I can say is PAIN! I'm going to try taping my toes before my next long run.

Aubree and I started at her home. Ran around Kirkway to my house (8 miles). Mark set up a great aid station for us! Apples, oranges, water, towels, Gu etc! Franklin loop (4 miles). Stopped at my house again. Funny random thing...my neighbor was locked out of his house and needed to use my house as a pit stop at the same time... ha ha Back to Aubree's house (6 miles). I felt pretty good the entire time. We averaged 8:58 pace while running.

I had to run on the treadmill this morning because I was short on time and Aubree couldn't run with me early. I tried to listen to the bits and pieces of General Conference that I missed over the weekend. 7 miles @ 8:30 0% incline. Went upstairs to get water, wake up kids and start a load of laundry. Ate a pancake and a few watermelon jelly beans. The beans did not sit well with me today. 8 miles @ 8:13 0% incline. only five more runs until Boston!

Nutrition- 2 cups water & 4 pieces of chocolate. I've got to work on my nutrition & sleep! It's hard though to stay on top of eating healthy when you don't feel like cooking. It was rough this week with sick kids. We had a "Stay-cation" that turned into a "Sick-cation." Not a lot of fun. If only I could get a decent nights sleep and had a personal chef that chopped up veggies for me all day... Luckily I felt Ok to run today in this gorgeous Spring weather! Aubree and I ran straight from the Easter Egg Hunt at the church through the heart of Bloomfield Hills. This is such a beautiful place! We ran past a few homes with enchanting bridges arching over small streams in their yards. I couldn't help slowing down and soaking in the beauty of the landscaping, flowers, and architecture. My shins and IT were a little tender. 3x2 mile repeats. Set 1- 7:56 pace average set 2- 7:39 pace average

I had mixed feelings the entire weekend. I was supposed to run with my sister, Cheryl. We'd been planning this weekend for over a year and a half. She got a stress fracture the week before in Disney World. My heart ached for her that she was there with a boot on her leg, in pain, and couldn't run. She was the best coach and cheerleader supporter! On the other hand, my sister, Becca, bought a last minute plane ticket and ran in Cheryl's place. She was training for her first marathon in a couple months and jumped at the opportunity to run Boston. It was so much fun running with Becca! I also got to meet, share a room, and spend time with Steam8. We adopted her as another sister. Running aside, it was a great girls weekend! According to the BAA "this is an experience- NOT a race." Thank you BAA for taking the pressure off. It definitely wasn't my best race. In fact, I got a Personal Worst (PW). (Other runners at the finish were talking about their PW's. This was the first time I'd even heard the term). I really felt the record breaking heat! The "relative pace" was so much slower. A half mile into it I switched from "race mode" to "fun mode." With that said, this was an AMAZING "EXPERIENCE!" I couldn't believe the energy and crowd support! There are so many kind people in the world! I appreciated all the locals who hooked up their garden hoses to spray us off, the little kids who handed out popsicles, the people who passed out oranges and bananas, and all the other people cheering along the way. I kept saying, "This is so much fun!" and "I can't believe I'm here." I walked, ate, and drank a ton! I ran by the Hospital I was born in. I saw so many inspirational people on the course. (Team Hoyt is one of my favorites). I tried to enjoy every minute of it. Becca and I powered up Heartbreak hill. I could tell she wanted to push the last couple of miles in so I hid behind someone so she wouldn't see me and so she would feel free to kick it in. I on the other hand, kept the pace. It wasn't worth it to me to push it in the heat when our time was already slow. I'm a baby. I don't like breathing hard. I wanted to stay in "fun mode" and not cross over to "race mode." Cheryl was the best. I heard her voice and then saw her right on the fence in the middle of thousands of people on the final stretch cheering for me. I can't describe my emotions when I crossed the finish line. I cried with happiness when the medal was placed around my neck and when I saw Becca, Cheryl, and Steam8. This was a race and weekend I will never forget! Splits: 5K 27:33 10K 56:36 15K 1:24:37 20K: 1:54:37 1st HALF 2:00:32 25K: 2:24:00 30K: 2:55:08 35K 3:23:00 40K 3:50:30 42K 4:03:17 2nd HALF 2:02:45

THE HARDEST STEP IS THE FIRST STEP OUT YOUR FRONT DOOR! I can't believe it has been TWO WEEKS since Boston! I thought May 1st would be a good day to turn over a new leaf and start running again. I NEED a new running GOAL- something to keep me motivated. I feel so much better when I'm running. I felt like I was the Tin Man in Wizard of OZ the first mile. It took a mile or two for my joints to feel oiled up again. However, it felt good to finally get out there in the damp Spring air!

1 mile warm up. 5k FUN RUN. Unofficial time: 23:06. PA - 7:26. Aubree and I used the Cranbrook Fun Run for our beginning of training time trial. It was a beautiful course. I went out a little fast because I thought I was going to hit the clock on the right. I got a side ache 1/2 way through. Also, my vision seemed blurred - not because I was running fast but because I think I'm getting old and need contacts! I had a lot left in me at the end, but I slowed down in the middle and walked up two hills. I ran this pace several splits of my marathon. I NEED TO WORK ON MENTAL STAMINA! Any suggestions? I didn't feel like figuring out the math while I was running. I started the sprint on every second minute and sprinted for about 35 seconds. Then took the next minute and a half to catch my breath. I had to hold on to the bar A LOT. I've never run that fast on the treadmill before. My legs are already feeling it. I tripped the safety cord a couple of times and didn't finish the full 35 seconds on a couple as well. I'm only counting 100m for those. I tried cooling down but must have been kind of wobbly and tripped the cord again! I only did 400 cool down. Sleep- wha-hoo! woke up once but got over 8 hours. I was so tired last night from the weekend that I almost fell asleep in my clothes. |

I honestly had no idea how I would do in this race because I half-heartedly started running again about 7 weeks ago. My goal was run and pace Cheryl for another BQ, but in my mind, I wasn't even sure if I would be able to finish. I've had hip/IT/knee problems since I jumped into this "training" with out building up milage. Two Days Pre-Race. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Detroit-LA-LasVegas-St.George. The total travel was 13 hours! I had a huge headache, kink in my neck, and was exhausted by the time I finally got to St. George. Becca picked me up from the shuttle stop. I changed in the bathroom and we ran the last couple of miles of the course and then stretched a little. So fun to see Becca- she was a perfect hostess! Day/Night Before. Family members started showing up at Becca's house. Suz surprised everyone with a visit and homemade marathon cookies! Needless to say that I didn't get much sleep with a house full with 22 people including kids. I just wanted to stay up and talk to everyone. After the expo, Doug, Cheryl, Becca, Suz, and I dumped our bags out and traded Gu, energy, race presents, marathon tips etc. I kind of felt like we were little kids again trading Halloween candy! Doug cracked me up with all of his gear and everything he was going to pack for the race. Becca and I also went to a "Taping Party" hosted by her chiropracter neighbor. This guy taped up my right shin and left IT/hip just to be nice. Thank you, thank you! I've never been taped before, but I'm sure this was one of those extra little things that helped me a ton during the race! Race Morning. Cheryl decided to shoot for a 3:35. I printed off a little paper with the splits and packed tape in my drop bag to make an old-school split bracelet on the bus ride up. Breakfast consisted of an oatmeal pack and banana. I took some Advil, water, and nibbled on a waffle on the bus ride up. The six of us (Doug, Douglas, Paul, Cheryl, Becca, and I) stayed together before the race waiting in lines at the bathrooms. There was a five minute warning call for the race to begin and we all kind of got split up. We heard the start beep and made a mad dash to the drop bag truck. Race. We started about 3 minutes after gun time. I was totally disorganized and was carrying and adjusting stuff for the first 13 miles! It was pretty comical when I think about it. I didn't even tie my shoes until between miles 8 and 9. These are approximate miles because I was completely winging it! 1-3: The course was pretty crowded with people so I couldn't stop to adjust anything. 4-7: Cheryl wore the watch and I was going to take pictures on my iPhone the entire time. What was I thinking? Running with the iPhone was useless. I wish I would have remembered that from Boston. Anyway, I finally untangled my iPhone earbuds just to have the phone fall out of the sleeve and get tangled all over again. I did feel grateful for the few gusts of excellent tailwind. I couldn't help imagining that it was our angel sister, Julie, trying to help us out. 8-9: Once I finally set the iPhone up from not falling out and stuffed all the cords in my tank top, I dropped my arm sleeves. I finally tied my shoes halfway up Vejo hill! Then I took my first energy chomps. Paul Hatch caught up to us around this time and then took off with Becca up the hills. 10-13: We ran with Douglas for a few miles until he sped ahead too. I know my mind was preoccupied with another little project but I can't remember what during these miles. Maybe it was just focusing on getting up the hills. All I know is that as soon as I felt a little organized, I pulled the split bracelet out of my pocket to start checking our times. I love how this marathon gives splits every mile! You don't even need a watch. We were running strong but a little slow on our split at the half. 14-21: Paul H. jumped in with us at the half. His fresh burst of energy lifted everyone around him. Suz was cheering at mile 16! :) I forgot to give her the phone. :( I ate a pack of Jelly Beans. They gave me heart burn. I only had a few sips of Gatorade before aspirating some into my lungs. I don't like hasty stops because I inevitably spill on myself, make a mess with the Gu or start choking on fluids. I took another Gu from the course and stopped at every aid station for water and Icy Hot. 22-26.2: Cheryl and Paul pulled ahead as I took my time with the stops and eating my last Gu. I exerted extra effort to catch up within eye-sight of them. I never caught up to Cheryl. She finished 5 seconds ahead of me. I also had to retie my shoes during one of these miles. The last couple of miles in town were hard. My pace was OK but I didn't feel great. I gave up high-fiving people because it through me off balance. I could barely even hold that wonderful, cold wet towel they offer you at mile 25. I just let it slip through my fingers. I was in a sort of fog. Suz and Mary Claire cheered and ran with me for a few steps before the finish. Suz was the best marathon supporter! (Suz later told me that I looked completely out of it). Cheryl walked me through the shoot and to the exit where a First Aid volunteer asked how I was doing, took my pulse (which was low) and directed me to the First Aid tent. I can't explain exactly how I felt... sore muscles, stiff legs, foggy brain, chest pain, reflux, nausea, emotional. I started crying a little and then a little more after I saw Suz. They forced me to have a bite of something and some sips of water. Final Thoughts. My time was only 30 seconds slower than 2 years before. I realized that I could still push myself with the pace even with my lack of training. The difference, however, was how I felt. Two years ago, I trained harder and smarter. I remembered feeling relaxed, great, and happy the entire race. This time I felt disorganized, like I was constantly trying to "catch up," and not as strong mentally and physically. In Boston, I realized that I don't like the "racing" feeling but do love running when it feels relaxed and easy. This race reiterated the fact that my primary motivation for training hard again would be to take better care of my body and to feel good during races. Possible increased speed would only come as a secondary fringe benefit and not a matter of focused priority. I definitely was not on top of my game with this race, but I still enjoyed the whole experience and running with family! I know that may sound crazy. I also know that I had help beyond my own level of training to help me get through this. I was filled with gratitude that I was even able to finish! I was also happy for everyone else and how well they did in reaching their goals! Becca, Cheryl, and I qualified for Boston, Doug, Douglas, and Paul Hatch beat their goals for their first time marathons. Hearing how well Aubree and Amber did gave me another boost of happiness. I really do love this marathon. Even though there are more hills than you would expect, it is organized, the course is beautiful, and the people are full of positive energy.
