7 p.m.  Hope and change run while listening to election returns.  I had one good 1/2 mile pickup on the way home.  Today I feel a bit creaky.  I don't know if it's the run or yard working 2 out of the last 3 days.  This is my longest running layoff unrelated to a marathon; things have been busy.  If I'm not careful, I'll miss out on my 2000 miles in 2012 goal.

54 days left, just over 7 weeks. Assuming you run 5 days per week that's about 40 more times. You'd need an average of 5.78 miles per run. With long weekend runs in there you should be fine. Because if you don't get 2000 nobody will ever talk to you again and you'll have to run with the pose of shame.

It's looking more and more likely. What exactly is the pose of shame? Does it have anything to do with peeing your pants?

Head down to chest, feet shuffling, hands in pockets. If no pockets, hands in side waist band. A very uncool, friendless pose.

But alas, 2000 is just an arbitrary number. 1982 is a much better, yet smaller, arbitrary number. Why not 1971?

Ah, Russ, your jests are soothing. But you know how well runners love arbitrary. I just read a race report of a frustrated runner who ran a 3:00:08 marathon. There is magic in the numbers.

I read that same race report. Ouch. Out of 3 frickin hours 9 lousy seconds mattered? How incredibly frustrating. Arbitrary is King methinks. I am thankful that I will never approach the arbitrary number of 2:59:59 so I will never be frustrated by it. However, that 3:15:00 arbitrary number does look very sweet.
