Rock and Roll Half in 1:16:02.

Missed my A goal by a few seconds but I'm pretty happy with my time. It's a PR of a minute and twenty seconds. I may have run too conservatively the first 10 miles but the effort felt about right and I wasn't really able to get much of a next gear until the final 5k, which I ran at 5:43 pace, splitting mile 13 in 5:38, which I guess is something to be proud of even though it suggests I might have had a bit too much left. I hit the finish line pretty wiped though. A full report to follow.

An Allie Moore sighting but I would have had to cross plow a bunch of skinnies to get over to her. And I didn't have anything clever planned to say. Looks like she ran well.

REPORT

I have run this race three years in a row and the course is kind of special to me. It was how I started to learn the layout of Philadelphia in 2013 before I moved here. I came to see my wife before we were married and ran the race, hoping to break 80 minutes for the first time. I ran 1:17:50, a PR of I think 4 minutes or nearly that. Last year I ran 1:18:36 with temps in the low 70s and high humidty. Although that bummed me out, I knew I was fit. With the Pope in town the same weekend as the race, it was moved to this weekend. It worked out well because I am fitter and closer to my marathon.

Typical race morning, but too dark for me! I managed to not pee in the bushes of the Rodin Museum this year but I marked a tree in an open park (hey, it was dark). Warmed up 2.5 Kenyan style (very slow, 10 minute first mile). Felt very good, told myself, "We are going to have a good day today." Did some light dynamic stretches followed by strides.

Got into the corral and looked around for Allie. I did see her in the first few hundred meters but she was on the right-hand side so I stayed where I was. I found myself in a pack of women elites, thinking maybe I might run with them. Some fell back early so I concentrated on my effort. First mile was ahead of plan but it felt solid in 5:45. My pace was way weird in between buildings (first time with a GPS on this course).

I felt like the first few miles I wasn't able to turn over even though my cadence was (and is) high. Too slow in those mile maybe other than mile 1. Started to pick it up around mile 5 or 6, still feeling good but waiting until mile 9, which turns back down Martin Luther King.

I started digging in for those final miles and I might have run them faster I don't know. Effort was about right. I've redlined from the gun before and every mile you think your legs will lock up at any minute.

Ripped off a cheeky little 5:38 for mile 13, watching the clock in the distance tick away at high 1:15. Had I started kicking a quarter mile out I would have had it.

1:20 PR is fantastic! Looking forward to the rich chocolatey goodness! Great job!

Extending the string of PR's!

It's a good thing you didn't talk to Allie. She's completely unapproachable.

Thanks, Tom. The rick chocolatey goodness has left its mark on my legs (a little sore already, which never happens). Some unprecedented splits strung together, which I will post later.

She was *literally* not approachable given the bodies (and we were moving). But yeah. A totally unapproachable person otherwise as well I can only assume.

Congratulations, Jason. It's awesome to see your hard work, dedication and deliberate training paying off in races.

You took a big step up today- keep it rolling!

Not a single mile over 6:00, great job as usual -- hard work paying off!

Thats a great honest race. Awesome PR and even more cool that it's in the middle of a Marathon training cycle.

Comment attempt #2...

1. Awesome race. Not surprised given how well you've been running, but really impressed!!

2. That last 5K... not far off where your 5K PR stood a few weeks ago. Hammering!!

From Jason D on Tue, Nov 03, 2015 at 11:39:14 from 139.84.48.251

Thanks, everyone. I was pleased with the result. Hoping for a good marathon PR in 2.5 weeks.

Jake: I ran a few "hidden" PRs in there, including 10k (35:42), 15k, and 10 mile. They don't count of course but it's still pretty cool. The 10k was the final 10k. The first 10k was ~36-low I think.

Not sure where the faster miles in the beginning were but I was glad to get them in at the end. Based on some mile repeat sessions I knew I was capable of running high 5:3Xs if I wasn't completely locked up.

From Jake K on Tue, Nov 03, 2015 at 11:42:33 from 199.190.170.22

Seems like you ran it perfectly, in a way that shows you are probably more marathon ready than HM-ready (good sign) and by having something in the tank at the end (instead of going out too hard and blowing up) you should recover well and be ready to smash up that marathon.

Your run was a good lesson in the benefits of even/negative split racing.

When a 1:16 gets you 107th place, you know the big boys came out to play. Which is totally not true, because they're all skinny little guys. and gals.

From butlerbrunning on Tue, Nov 03, 2015 at 18:11:44 from 104.52.197.67

Hey Congrats on your PR Jason and on a well run race..super strong... keep it up.

Thanks, guys.

Burt: I'm not huge but I am much much bigger than the ladies (and many dudes). At one point I had drop the pack of ladies I was with because they yelled "Kill the ogre!" :-)
