Course is being re-certified due to flooding. It came up very long for many. It's not officially certified at this time. Yadda yadda excuses. I just went for broke and I need the morning to be a baby and eat my pancakes. Full report later. 6:07/6:08 pace on the watch. I still wouldn't have broke 1:20 I don't think, but 1:20 would be nice. Bam, I need you state side to slap me and steal my pancakes. I still ran a 4 minute PR.

AM: Carmel Half Marathon. When I picked up my packet yesterday I noticed some flooding in the area and sure enough they were making changes to both the half and full course. The re-certifications were submitted last night (I'll change my numbers when everything is approved). Got there about the time I wanted to, but was somehow running a bit late. I only had time for a 1.25 mile with some low-intensity strides (it was probably for the best). I had what I believe was a Joe Bell (from the blog) sighting. He was running the full. I thought I had to use the john, but I think it was just nerves ("race pee" is what I call it). We had a prayer and moment of silence. Lined up a bit in front of the 1:30 pace group because I didn't want to get caught up in the elite runners (the woman pacing was a 2:37 marathoner). Things went off fine and I ran in a group of 6-minute folks for a little while (~3 miles) before taking off and running on my own for the rest of the way with no one passing me (about dang time Dodgey). I usually hate running alone, but I decided I didn't want anyone around me today and I was going to shoot for sub-1:20 on my own. It was sometimes hard to tell if I was on the course or not, but once I got to the turns, signs or people confirmed my direction. This is already getting long so I will get right to the rich chocolatey goodness.

Splits: 6:09, 6:08, 6:15, 6:06, 6:10, 6:17, 6:15, 6:00, 6:00, 6:20, 6:11, 6:00, 6:00, 1:35 (.28)

Garmin Activity

I tried to set my watch to manual lap before the start but couldn't figure it out because it's new. I know I was pretty much dead on or a touch early to the halfway point. After that I noticed a big difference in split timing with mile markers (incidentally not long after I was running the improvised section). Ultimately it doesn't matter (even though it still hurts a bit. Could you tell?); I just hope everything is all set for any course records so folks can get their prize money.

Cooled down 4.75 miles. I saw Jesse Davis coming down finish in 2:20-2:21. I think he's a 2:18 guy. I have no idea if he won. He ran the Olympic Trials last year.

I am very pleased with the effort today despite my earlier grumbling. Even though 13.1-13.14 would have put me at 1:20:24-1:20:36 :)   All this really means is I have to run 1:18 in September at Philly RnR. Overall, I wanted to place in the top 10 and race (as well as run) well. The first part I accomplished (running 6th), and I think I did the second part as well.

Well done. Regardless of the course confusion, this is clearly a big HM jump for you. 1:18 @ Philly is totally in the cards for you. Very consistent pacing as usual, too!

From SlowJoe on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 16:04:52 from 96.61.24.215

Yeah, you do seem to nail the pacing pretty consistently. Congrats on the monster PR! The next half you run will definitely be a 1:1x:xx.

From Jason D on Sat, Apr 20, 2013 at 17:08:08 from 24.1.80.94

Jake: I am not sure why I needed to qualify and cloud a perfectly fine race. The 1:20s weren't too bad. I know the 1:1xs are much harder, but I am okay with that. I know you didn't quite hit what you wanted today, but you always seems to be on. It's a deposit for sure. You and Riley are tough as nails and nice guys to boot.

Joe: The Garmin helps a ton, but you still have to run at the right effort or you can still get into trouble. Legs were pretty done after 10-11, but they were still responding (I love that). Mile 11 I was running 5:52 for most of it wondering what the heck I was doing. I didn't want an embarrassing finish, so I eased up. It wasn't as fast as last years finish, but I am running a good bit closer to (and at times @) lactate threshold.

Hope you are enjoying the rest period. Remember how quickly you came back after you 10-day break before your Boston buildup? It did you well.

Nice race Jason. Congrats on the PR! You just keep improving; it's fun to see.

Our course measured way long today too...annoying. I could've finally got my 1:06:xx. Oh well right? I agree with Jake 1:18:xx is definitely in the cards for you at Philly.

Great race and report Jason! Definitely some great pacing and strong finish. Congrats on the big PR! It'll be fun to see you crush that again later this year. :)

From Andrea on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 18:16:37 from 98.202.239.247

Awesome race Jason! You gotta be feeling pretty confident for the marathon in a month!

From Jason D on Sun, Apr 21, 2013 at 19:29:26 from 24.1.80.94

Riley: Thanks. I think the half marathon is my distance. The course measurements are annoying. I do know a little bit about them measuring long due to Garmins being off (they aren't the final word), but last year I had .08 and the course changes were hurried. .20 of bad tangents for a half?! I still need to learn to run them in addition to some racing tactics as I continue to work on my speed.

Matt: I couldn't have asked for anything more. Running solo on two lane rounds with the cyclists tooling around. I actually was happy to run without anyone. The residents were very kind and supportive.

Andrea: It's a 4-miniute PR from Sept. on a well-ensured honest 13.1! I am looking forward to the marathon. I am pretty sure I am solidly in 2:53-2:55 shape on a flat course and the aided course will hopefully help and not tear me up. Thanks for checking in.

Well done Jason. Another huge PR. Well balanced training is providing you with good returns. You're improving rapidly, which is great.

Keep doing what you're doing and plan a conservative first half to the Sugarloaf marathon with a strong second half and you'll end up with a 'sweet' surprise.

From Bret on Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 15:32:48 from 199.106.166.123

Congrats Jason - I know I am late to the comments - but you really had a huge PR and a solidly paced race. Well-done!

From Jason D on Fri, Apr 26, 2013 at 20:00:12 from 24.1.80.94

Bam: I'm going to try to mirror my pacing plan tomorrow and work some downhills. It's likely I'll be running alone for the entire race, so I won't get caught in anyone's pace. Except it would be have someone help pace. I guess I will do what I did last weekend and try to relax. My parents won't be far away so that will be good encouragement. Also, it must be the end of the semester because I am only just now getting your pun . . .

Bret: Not a problem! Thanks for checking in at any time as always.
