morning - 12.1 Club run. From store into Fields and up River Trail back to store. A decent run. James and I ran together as Bill and Steve took off. (Cumulus gold 130.3) Goals for this year: Last year I wrote out quite a list of goals and didn't get many of them, so in a way it damped what I did accomplish. So I really don't feel like setting too many this year. But here are a few things I would like to accomplish: Have a good quick 10K-1/2 marathon, since I've been working on my speed, I would like to have it pay off; Nothing about mileage numbers other than run enough to keep it fun and help me become a better runner; Continue to work to spread the all around awesomeness of this sport/lifestyle with my athletes, friends, family; Keep a good balance with my family who puts up with a lot because of what I do.

morning - 5.75 Washington Loop. Just an easy run and then took the dog around the block. (Landreth black 314.05)
noon - 5.1 Washington Parkway 6x1 min fartlek. Got out earlier, since I wasn't wiped out from this morning's run and got it done. Started the fartlek at the overpass at the top of the Parkway coming down, so the first 2 were downhill, 3rd pretty flat, 4th uphill on to Telegraph, 5th and 6th flat on Telegraph and into Cottonmill. Went from .22 on downhiller's to .19 on uphill and .20 and .21 on flats (including last). Good little speed play. (Stratus bee 414.55)

AM - 18.5 Quail Creek. Had to get out pretty early due to some family things today, so I missed the club run. Run was okay. Saw four shooting stars - 1 big one - and the lake was cool looking in the dark. Legs didn't respond too well to anything, so I kept it pretty chill. Did push the last 7.5 a little to about a 6:10-30 average, but legs weren't wanting to go any quicker. (Stratus black 125.75) Week was pretty decent. Interesting how quick the body adjusts to things. I haven't run big mileage for 1 1/2 months and just going to this weeks mileage made me tired. Although a lot of that had to do with this cold (and now it is an ear infections, beastly). Goals for next week: readjust to school life. It has been great having the time off with the family and doing a lot of stuff together, but now it is time to get back to real life - so I'll see where that takes my running.

AM - 2.7 School. Ran to school today as the Jeep will be in the shop for a little while. It was 16 degrees and the snow had mad a layer of ice on everything - very slick. (Stratus black 128.45) afternoon - 10.9 Mall Trail w/ the boys, then hit 5xbarefoot striders - nice to be out barefooting again. Then ran it home. Decided against 2000's today because of the ear infection, now is not the time to make anything like that worse. Was going to go home dogpound, but the road was torn up and I couldn't get through, so I had to cross country it around Sandberg's. Got home and took the dog around the neighborhood. AM - 2.7 School. Another chilly run to school. (Cumulus white 445.25) afternoon - 7 Z Loop. Into Green Springs and around by Z's house and a grass loop to top it off with the boys. Really tired at the beginning, but started to slowly snap out of it. (Cumulus white 452.25)

AM - 2.7 School. Got up and ran to school again. (Landreth 547.35) afternoon - 10.75 Middleton Trails. Went up into Middleton w/ the boys and hit a few trails across the top over to Green Springs and brought it back to school; ran home; took the dog around the block (measured it for the first time, actually .85 - always thought .75 - and the dog kept me well below 7:00 for the loop!). (Landreth 558.1)

AM - 2.7 School. I've decided most of the reason I hadn't been getting up before this week - since I have to right now - was simply lack of drive and laziness. Can I overcome that and run a few each morning when I get the Jeep back - if I ever get it back? (Stratus bee 417.25) afternoon - 10.85 10x400hills. Warmed up with the boys and dragged them over to some hills by the middle school that I will dub "Old Man" hills (because they were in a 55 and over community. It was a nice little incline for 200 then a very gradual for the last 200. It was a good hill for this type of workout. I kind of tricked the boys and didn't tell them how many we were doing tell half way, but they did awesome. Then ran it back to PVHS and to the shop to pick up the Jeep. $700 later it is done. Not too bad though in the grand scheme since I haven't had to make a payment on it in 7+ years. (Stratus bee 428.1)

morning - 13.15 Painter's with the club - James, Austin, Nate and I running, Clyde and Logan biking. Did a nice easy run on the 1/2 course. Temps weren't too bad. Glad we did it to remind me of how long the Bloomington loop section of the course is. (Cumulus gold 143.45)
Week wasn't too bad. Missed my 2000's because of the ear infection (which is still just hanging around), but miles were right where I wanted them and I even got up most of the week to run - since I wasn't getting to work any other way. Goals for next week: I am not really sure what to expect for the 1/2. I am in pretty decent shape (maybe even better than I think), but after coming off last summer, anything else seems less than ideal for racing. But I am going to push and make it a good start to the racing season.

| | afternoon - 9.1 GS/PL/Middleton reverse with the boys. A pretty solid run. I was impressed how well these 4 our doing (Danny, Austin, Corey, Decker) with the little higher mileage. We picked it up to 6:00 on the few miles coming down out of Green Springs. (Landreth black 333.65) |

| | evening - 8.1 Club run on the Parkway. At the top of the Parkway we went on the north road up to Green Springs and then back to the store - dodging cars and trying to cut it as close as possible to death (Steve really didn't like that part for some reason). Nice little run with a fun group out. (Stratus bee 443.45) |

Race was okay. It really showed me what type of shape (or lack thereof) I am in. A group of us just started off pretty easy and were going along decent. And as Paul and JeffMc went at around mile 7 I just couldn't really get the legs going any more. Same thing happened as Hayden pulled away just a mile later. So I just kind of cruised it in knowing I wasn't in shape to catch Hayden and Sasha wasn't go to catch me, so why kill myself. (Landreth 563.10) (Ohana -13.5 Warmed up with a few guys, but Hayden and I pushed it a little further (4.5 total) and cut the start close, but no biggy. [Splits are by Garmin which measure 13.27 (so they are off a bit)] 1-5:40, pretty chill start to race. Group of 7 or so. 2-5:32, still no one pushing and I am fine with it. 3-5:11, make the turn onto River Road and then onto the trail and we begin to pick things up. Group narrows to pretty much the top 5. 4-5:14, I am actually feeling very good and excited about it as we keep it moving. 5-5:28, we slow up the hill into Bloomington Hills, but still feeling good. No one pulled away from me on the hill and I thought I might win. 6-5:10, moving strong back along the top of BH. 7-5:25, a little icey on the top section of trail and then Hayden went down on the bridge and I hurdled over him, slowing up to make sure he was okay. 8-5:43, wasn't it just like 1 mile ago I thought I was running strong enough to win? Not any more. Jeff and Paul kept going strong and Hayden regained me and just pulled away steadily. 9-5:45, I guess this is where my lack of any type of tempo work shows. I could hold this 5:45 stuff all day. I wasn't hurting. Just couldn't go any faster. 10-5:37, The Bloomington loop is always a tough part in this race for me. Today it is no different as I have no drive. 11-5:44, I pretty much resign myself to 4 (as stated above) and figure I'll just keep moving it along like this until the end. 12-5:44, more of the same up the trail. 13-5:53, Gave a few checks back to make sure Sasha wasn't coming and just chilled. .1(.27 on Garmin)-6:05 pace, the little end section was stupid. As I turned around I saw Sasha had gained a little on me the last few miles, but I was secure so I jogged it on in. A little different finish than last year when I collapsed. It is easier to finish this way! No big deal today. Even though I didn't run great, I hadn't the base or especially the tempo training to hit a great 1/2. So I'll just start to get things rolling a little better now and improve.

afternoon - 9 Ran Foremaster w/ the boys and then did 6 striders. After, I went and did wieghts, just two sets since I haven't lifted for so long. Then finished with DI loop. Legs felt a little better after wieghts and on the DI loop than the last couple days. Had to run in an old pair of Cumulus 9's (red) because I had a shoe mistake. They actually felt okay and may have a little more in them, so I won't be too afraid to use them if I have to again. (Cumulus red -8

evening - 9 Club run. Started with a mile w/ the dog. Py came on the last little with us. She had a lot of fun outsprinting me. Then went over to run w/ the club. We went up Middleton/PL/GS. A light little drizzle and good company made it nice. (Cumulus white 477.50) Didn't run this morning because I don't want the miles to go up too high too fast.

AM - 6 Washington Loop. Nice drizzly morning. Abs hurt just a little, so I need to be careful as I keep taking mileage up (they had been feeling great the past couple weeks). Then took the dog out again. She is getting a little better at pacing herself! (Cumulus blue 506.65) afternoon - 9.5 10xold man hills. The hills took on the real meaning today as Austin laid it out that he is the master, not the old man. Just not a lot in the legs today. Chilly drizzly day and I just never really warmed up. Hit a quick round of weights when we finished. (Cumulus gold 152.95)

morning - 18 Club run. Ran over to the store (2.25), then met up with everyone - good to have Greg down to hit the run with us. We went out on the fields loop for 12 and then I ran home. Of course the dog wanted to go when I got home, so I took her around the block. Kind of fun in the rainy fog. A little tired by the end, but to be expected with the increase mileage, weights, and hills. (Landreth 587.1) Enjoyable week. It felt good to be doing morning runs again. Waking up wasn't a big deal and I felt a lot better. Glad I got into the weight room as well, even though I am not a big fan of it. Goals for next week: Mileage should be mid 90's; so pretty much the same as this week, w/ a run every mornign to catch the extra 6. Keep the abs/hips feeling okay.

AM - 6 Washington Loop. A little hard to get up this morning, and another drizzly day. But made it through - slight pain in right achilles. Then ran the dog around the block. (Cumulus blue 512.65) afternoon - 9 River Run. Went with the team and got the started on Sunrise hills and I continued around onto the River Run. | | afternoon - 14.6 Green Springs and Hospital in reverse. Went with the team up to Green Springs as they did 6. Then I continued it on to Hospital with 2 sets of 2 miles at Tinman pace with a mile between. The first mile was very easy with the downhill (so time was well below Tinman), second was a good fair mile with another solid time (had to keep it chill and not go to crazy). Then recovered(?) up over Foremaster and started the second set up the long hill past Target and the Outlets. First one was right on 6:00; second slipped a little, but not for lack of effort. I really worked hard on it, so I felt good. Then cooled down and went over by Old Man Hills to find an 800 hill nearby for our workouts, and brought it back to school. Got home and took the dog around the neighborhood; she was anxious since we didn't run this morning. (Stratus black 164.95) |

AM - 6 Washington Loop. Still a little chilly out in the mornings. Slept good, too good. I didn't want to get up. But did and had a nice little run. Then took the dog around as usual. (Landreth 593.10 - these shoes are holding up very well. I would imagine they will become the first shoe that goes 601+ miles)
afternoon - 11 River Trail. Went down the trail 5 and back and had a decent run. My legs are a little sore and tired (mostly from adding the weights, but hopefully the strength in my hips and legs will be worth it). Got back and lifted and then did my 8xbarefooters. (Cumulus white 487.50)

Then took the dot around. (Landreth 599.10) afternoon - 12 6x1000's. Started off with 3.5 barefoot to get warmed as I waited for the team. Then we did a DI warm up and got into the 1000's. The goal pace for Corey and Austin was 3:21; mine was a few seconds quicker; with 200 jog recovery. Hit them all decent, between 3:15 and 3:18. The boys (and girls) hit their's solid as well. AM - 19.5 Quail Creek. Had to get up at the early hour to get the run in before Ry's swim meet (she swam very well) making it very dark and lonesome out on the road. I didn't wear a watch, but I felt pretty solid throughout and the ave. was probably a solid long run. Took the lake loop backward, which makes for 2 hard climbs right near the end. Got home and took the dog around to end it all. (Cumulus gold 172.45) Had another solid week. Mileage is progressing very well. Legs were a little flat throughout the week, but I attribute that to lifting more than anything else; nonetheless, I will keep doing it to strengthen up some of my weaknesses. Goals for next week: Keep the mileage right in the same area (right around 100). Enjoy the morning temps, because they won't be here for much longer (it will be the middle of summer before we know it).

AM - 6 ACx2. Time to start up the morning practices and get my overdose of Arctic Circle run. Ran with Chandis on the first one and Kimz and Aust on the second. (Cumulus blue 518.65)
I realized I have parent teachers this week. So running is going to be severly adversely affected. I hate PT Confs. afternoon - 15.3 Mall/Trail to No Where and Hospital. Ran with a good group of boys on the Trail to No Where. Then I extended down around Hospital. Felt very flat and tired, so I didn't try to hit any Tinman. Then I had to hurry home to watch Laney as Ry and Py went swimming; so no striders or lifting. When I got home, I took Lanes in the stroller and the dog on a run over to the ball fields and we ran 8xbarefoot striders and a barefoot mile, then home. (Cumulus white 500.8))

| | mid-morning - 9 barefoot. Went out on the balls fields and ran 8 miles barefoot before PT's and then did 8xbarefoot striders. Felt okay but did get a blister on my left big toe. Only run for today as I won't want to run when I get home and slept in not feeling too great this morning. I have a little cold and don't want it to go full blown by wearing myelf out.

AM - 6.75 2xAC w/ some laps. Nice little run. Blisters didn't bug. I drained them last night and put mole skin on them, so no problem. (Landreth 605.75) evening - 10 Middleton. Took the dog around the neighborhood; then ran out to Middleton and up to the top of the Heights. Felt pretty good and racey. Warmed up with Corey, Josh, and Austin around DI and then got into AT. I didn't feel loose or great, but once we got moving it went well. AT section was 3.25 miles and we did it in just over 17:00 - pretty solid; considering the last mile is all uphill and we held it at 6:00. Then cooled down with DI again. (Landreth black 374.8)

morning - 22 Icehouse. Took the trail up Icehouse and then to the trailhead at Broken Mesa with a large group of us. A pretty solid run. Even with all the climbing (app. 2300 ft in 9 miles) I felt good. It was like Wild Kingdom as we raced a small herd of 7 deer up the Icehouse climb; then when we got on top we saw a large herd of probably 100 deer moving across the mesa. We chased them for a few miles and saw a few nice bucks. Then we heard a few coyotes out howling. And it was nice, as I timed my fall much better than last time (on the lava) and fell on some nice soft dirt and only knocked my breath out. (Cumulus gold 194.45)
Good week. Kind of a pain with PT's and that crazy schedule. But mileage was good (I should have taken the dog out today and hit 100+, but I needed to work in the yard and I was tired). Goals for next week: Get back into the weight room (missed both times last week because of PT schedule), and be right up near the century mark if I am feeling good - really it is just about mileage and time on the feet all spring.

Then went down to the River Trail to get in a little Tinman work. I really wasn't feeling it at all and wanted to just drag the run, but I need to pick up the pace every now-and-then; so I went for 2x2 miles at 6:00 pace w/ 1 mile recovery between. Once I got going it actually was pretty easy and I didn't have to work to hit the pace it just came. Got back and lifted and then ran a grass loop to stretch out the legs after. (Cumulus gold 206)

AM - 11 Green Springs and 2xAC with some laps. Still a little fatigue in the legs this morning. Did my core stuff like I have been doing most every day. (Landreth black 395.8) afternoon - 11.5 6x1000. Went out early to practice with the intent of getting in 3 extra miles before the team, but there was a baseball tournament taking up my barefooting grass, so I had to get the mileage with big loops. The team got out and we warmed up with DI. Then got into our 1000's. Most everybody did 2, but Kimz, Austin and I hit 6. I wasn't too excited to do these, but knew that once we got started it would be fine. First two were 3:17, then two at 3:16, then the fifth at 3:15. On the last one, I was on 3:15 pace for 600, then decided to see if the old legs could give a little more and hit a solid last lap for a 3:07. Finished with a slow, tired DI cool. Got home and took the dog around. (Stratus black 195.45)

morning - 18.5 Little Black Mt. Headed out on the AZ Strip again for a little run. At first I was thinking 15, but ended up with a little more. I wanted to find the old Jeep road that goes up the mountain, but I could find where it started, so I continued onward. Instead of head to the petroglyphs, I went out to the power lines. Looping around, I tried an off-beat trail that took me up to the face of some cliffs. I was about to do a 15 ft. free climb to the top but didn't feel so great about it, so I worked my way off the steep hillside and tide up with another road. I soon realized why I shouldn't have gone up the cliff - coming around a hill, a deep dry wash canyon made the cliff I was about to climb a huge finger; if I would have gone up, it would have added probably another 10 miles to the run to get around the canyon, or I would have had to rock climb back down the cliff face (either would have sucked - and I was happy I heeded the feeling). Got back to the car and came home to take the dog around the block and work on sprinklers all day. (Landreth 632.35) Week went pretty good. That lower ab pain has been coming back here and there for a couple weeks and yesterday set it off pretty strong, but today felt okay. Goals for next week: Practice is starting up for real next week, so goal is to try to find the balance of time for my running and time for the team.

morning - 10 Treadmill. Al is still pretty sick, so I just slept in and ran on the treadmill while trying to control the girls. Ran at 7:30, then 6:58, then 6:40 for the last 5. Finished by taking Laney and the dog around the block. Maybe I'll be able to get out somewhere this afternoon. (Cumulus blue 541.65) afternoon - 10.5 Treadmill. Well didn't make it out like I had planned, but I needed to run when I could and Laney was sleeping and Rylee with friends (so only 1 to fight while on the treadmill). Warmed up for 1.5 at 7:30, then took the rest at 6:58, and added .5 at 6:00 as a good song came on just as I was about to finish. Ran in the same shoes again - I don't know why. (Cumulus blue 552.15)

AM - 6 Washington Loop. Dragged myself out of the sick home and ran - also took the dog around. I may be on the treadmill, with practice and the whole family sick. (Landreth black 401.8) afternoon - 9.75 Old Man Hills. Took the kids that are in shape enough out to Old Man's. Hit 4 sets of 2x200 hills 1x800 hill. 200 hills were hard for me as I wan't very explosive. Felt pretty solid on the 800's, until the last one when my legs turned to jello. (Cumulus white 528.75)

AM - 12 2450/2xAC with some laps. Early morning running. Woo hoo! (Stratus bee 490.4) afternoon - 13 River Trail. 40 mins. of Tempo pace w/ Kimz and Austin. Set the team off as we all had varying paces for our 30-40 mins of tempo; we were shooting for 5:40 range. Warmed up down to trail. Then got 7.32 miles in at 5:40-5:45 pace throughout. Very solid workout. Cooled down back to school. Then I ended with barefoot striders. Got home and took Laney and the dog around the neighborhood. Long day of running. (Cumulus gold 219)

Came back and lifted since I hadn't been able to get it in this week. Then ended with 8xbarefoot striders. Legs a bit on the tired side throughout the day. (Stratus black 202.45)

morning - 24 Mustang Pass x 2. James, Nate, Steve, and I ran Mustang Pass from my house (just under 11 miles). Came back and grabbed a drink and hit it again. I added a little extra and took the dog around the neighborhood to round off the run. (Landreth 662.35)
Felt pretty good throughout the week. A bit sore from the 7+ tempo on Weds. but legs eventually came back. 120 during these temps is significantly easier than 120 in the summer (of course not nearly the crazy workouts either). Goals for next week: I think I'll be 110+ again. I would like to make that pretty regular - as much as possible - through track season. Need to lift two times this week (the last two weeks have only been once each).

AM - 12 2450/2xAC and some laps. Regular stuff. Very nice out with a little drizzle here and there. (Stratus bee 502.4) afternoon - 10 Hospital/DI. Pretty tired for only a Monday. Added DI to get in a couple extra. Then lifted and hit 8xbarefoot striders. (Cumulus gold 228)

AM - 12 Mall/2xAC and some laps. Felt a little better this morning, as far as having some juice in the legs. One of those mornings where it was nice and easy to get up (if only that was every morning). (Landreth black 421.8) afternoon - 10 River Trail. 4 sets of 2 min hard, 1 min easy; 1 min hard, 30 sec easy; 30 sec hard, 30 sec easy. A pretty solid workout. Added a couple grass loops, lifted and then hti 8xbarefoot striders. Leg was giving me some pretty serious issues. (Stratus black 211.45)

Nothing this morning. The past couple days, I have been experiencing some tendonitus in my right lower leg across the front. It came up a week ago, but went away. Then this week it has come back and gotten progressively worse. Pretty intense yesterday. I had been hoping to finish out the week strong and give it some time next week as my schedule will be very off (with Al going to SLC for most of the week to be with her mom). But the pain woke me up many times last night, so I figured I should heal it up now if it is hurting that bad. Have been icing and wintercresting for days. Usually this type of pain is easily treated, but this time it is giving me fits.
The ol' goose egg. I had thought about going out this afternoon, but a call to move a neighbor set that aside and I guess I'll just use the time to get the leg better.
| |
| |
AM - 6.65 2xAC w/ some laps. Leg feeling quite a bit better, but still a twinge in there. So I decided to cut back this morning and just run with the team and cut out the early stuff. Still working hard to take care of it. I would like to still be able to get my long run in tomorrow. (Cumulus gold 234.65) afternoon - 7 DIx2. Decided it would be best to keep it easy again this afternoon and passed on the 1000's with the team. Hit the DI warmup with them; timed them; ran DI cool with them; finished with 2 miles barefoot on the grass; and finally came home and took the dog around. It had been a few days since I took her out - she was a little ansy. Pain was very limited, however; nonetheless, it did seem to move around to the back and into the achilles a little. AM - 28.15 Utah Hill/Bear Claw Poppy Trail. Started off making a 14 mile loop in the desert up onto Utah Hill - it was too dark for us to try and tackle the trail. That run was nice and fun as a group. Then Steve and I continued onto Bear Claw. Here I felt even stronger. Although not my longest run in distance (2nd), it was the longest in time at just under 3 and 3/4 hours - a long time on the feet. But I felt very good. Not really even tired as we finished. Today was one of those days that had I been racing (and of course, actually been in race shape) I would have been able to do very well. (Landreth black 449.95)
Had a solid week despite missing Thursday and cutting back big time Friday to get the leg healed up. It was worth it in that today there was zero pain in the front tendonitis that was giving problems and very very minimal in the achilles of that right leg. Also did core stuff each day and hit the weights twice. Goals for next week: With Al gone most of the week, just do what I can and have fun with my girls.

AM - 12.5 Mall Run/2xAC w/ some laps. No pain at all this morning. Good start to the week. (Stratus bee 514.9) afternoon - 13.8 1000,1200,1600,1000 at 4:55'ish pace. Warmed up with 4 barefoot and 2 more on DI w/ team. Got the separate groups started on the workout and jumped in with Austin and Corey on this beast. Hit them all but was a little spent. We cut the workout a bit short skipping the second 1200 and 1600 - I may have finished them, but would have been hammered, no point in that. Kimz and I finished with PVMS cool down of 2.7 miles. Finished by taking the dog around and pushing Py and Laney in the stroller! (Cumulus white 557.55)

It was pretty uninspiring. I wanted to stop long before I got 10, but decided I needed to get there. Ran in new Landreth 5's. They are a lot like the 4's, in that I am not loving them at first step - but hoping they will age like a fine wine! (Landreth orange 10) |

morning - 10 Treadmill. Well this was pretty much just a run to run. I didn't want to run. I was ready for this week to be over and Al to be home. But I got on the treadmill and started up and just tole myself to get to 5. Then I bumped it to 7; finally up to 10. I thought about going more once I got there, but decided just to call it a week and end my misery. (Stratus bee 524.9)
Week was okay. Legs got tired after the first two day, but was able to get them back near the end of the week with lesser mileage and easy workouts. Goals for next week: get rolling again. Try to get a little longer run in, but there is a meet this weekend that may make that difficult.

AM - 12 Mall/2450/AC and some laps. Back to the morning grind. Felt decent this morning, but I could tell that I hadn't ran a lot of mileage in the last week because my legs were kind of herky-jerky. (Cumulus white 569.55) afternoon - 10 1000,1200,1600,1200,1000 @ 5:00+ pace. Wasn't able to get a great warmup in, just 2 with the team before the workout. Jumped in with Kimzey as he was alone at his pace. We were just a little slower this week than last (4:57-5:03 pace), but we got the whole workout in, even with the beastly wind. Cooled down with DI and took the dog around when I got home. (Stratus grey 20)

AM - 7 Buena Vista loop. Took Molly around first and then went out on BV w/ Warm Springs extension. Abs started giving me problems again at the end of last week. Kind of weird since I wasn't running hard or very much at that time - must have just tweaked them wrong. (Landreth 689.85) afternoon - 10 Mosquito/Staheli then Dog Pound. Went out on an easy 5 with the boys, then added dog pound. Finished up with a good solid set of lifting and then 8xbarefoot striders. (Stratus black 225.45)

AM - 12 Mall/2xAC. Ruth came over and she had a little workout to do, so as we ran Mall we did her 3x10 min steady pace runs at her 10K effort. Then finished up the run with regular AC's. Just a little tendinitis pain coming back into the right leg - better get on that before it gets bad again. (Landreth orange 22) afternoon - 7 DI and treadmill. Caught the DI cool down with the team and headed home and ran 4 more on the treadmill and then took the dog around. That tendinitis is flairing up a bit more again. (Landreth orange 29)

(Stratus black 240.1) afternoon - 10.9 Bracken's Loop. One of my all-time favorite runs - but also one of the hardest runs. A lot of sand (pretty much the whole thing) and a ton of climbs. But away from everyone and everything with a lot of amazing rock formations. In one of the dry stream-beds, some water surfaced for about twenty feet and was running and starting to pool in places. AM - 42 Utah Hill x 3. I really don't have a lot of weekends where I can prepare for the 50 - even though it is still a few months away - so I decided to get something big in today. Picked up Steve very early and we started the first loop. The dark kept it a little slower and actually hid the hills a little. Finishing up the first lap, James and the others went by - we started a little slow and the slower pace made us late. Moved into the 2nd lap and it went pretty good. Then moved into the 3rd lap and switched directions and it went pretty solid as well. Total time from the first step to the last was 6:18 including refueling/drink stops/bathrooms- for an average of 9:00. Nothing crazy, but this type of running, I found out, is much different than anything else I've done. It's not about pace, it's about getting it done. It was kind of surreal running that long. I thought about EVERYTHING one could think of. Named every stinking climb (and there were a ton). Cheered myself at notable milestones - 22, most miles for a week; 28, longest timed run; 31, longest mileage run; 40, 2 miles left; 41, 1 mile left; 42, done! Legs and mind were the big concerns, but I am actually pleased about how I held up all around. Hydration and fueling were solid. Ate bread and honey each time back at the Jeep and had plenty of Gu's and Shot blocks. Could have used just a little more gato and water on the last loop. (Landreth black 512.6)
This was the end to a monster week for me - 150+ total (previous high was 133), today's crazy run - and I feel pretty solid, a little tired but I think I could easily stick another 8 onto it and have a solid 50 miler (especially on fresher legs and a more racy atmosphere). Goals for next week: Chill out a little (our meet this coming weekend will slow me down), and start off the last quarter of the school year well.

noon - 28.5 Mustang Pass/Icehouse/Broken Mesa. Snow derailed our plans for Pine Valley (at least that's what I thought - sorry Steve), so I slept in and then went out on the trails. Conditions were great with the rains and the weather. Ran Mustang Pass and connected it to Icehouse. At the top of the climb I left my long-sleeve and water, only to come back and find it taken by some hippies from NAU who were out doing a study. Luckily I caught them at the bottom of the climb and got my shirt back and my drink (good - since I hadn't drank since 7 and I was now on 20). Finished back around Mustang and home. Run was solid; hit a few solid toe-grabbers that about made me go down and strained my stomach a little; but I survived. (Stratus bee 590.65)
Had a strong week. Got a little burned from the back-to-back track workouts with the kids, but hit solid mileage and good long-run with some climbing. Goals for next week: This will be more of a mileage week focus.

Started off with 3.5 barefoot; it felt good to get out there again, but there were so many stickers I just couldn't take anymore of it. So I put shoes back on and finished with a couple big loops. Then the team went out on the Shoe Run, but didn't find any shoes today. Finished off the day by lifting. (Stratus bee 597.65)

AM - 8 2xAC and some laps. Slept in a little. Long run this afternoon, so we'll see how that goes. (Landreth orange 91.25) afternoon-PM - 50 Strip. Went up to out to the AZ Strip for a 50 miler this afternoon. Parked at the top of Quai Hill and used that for the base for three legs out in different directions. Leg 1 Mokiac-18 miles: This was a lot of fun. More climbing that I thought, and I made this the 9 miler out and back which dropped me off the pass further than expected so I ended up climbing app. 2600 ft. during this section. But I was moving really well and enjoying being out in a new place. Leg 2 Quail Hill-16 miles: Got a drink and food and called Al to tell her I was alive and headed back down the main dirt road onto the Stipoff Quail Hill. Right away I wasn't having too much fun. The pace was easy because of the huge drop, but I wasn't looking forward to coming back up; however, I was happy that I had chosen to run this 2nd and not last, as the 8 back up were looking brutal. Sure enough 2000+ feet of climbing back up for a constant 8 mile was hienous. I did not enjoy it at all. The toughtest part of the run was the mental aspect - as my body felt fine, but my mind was all over the place. I kept thinking how hard it was and my mind just kept going back to it over and over. Then I just got mad at myself over my pity party - Losing muscle control in your face mid-sentence and having your wife look at you with tears in her eyes wondering if you are going to die and not being able to answer - that's hard; trying to consol your wife while you stare at an ultrasound machine with a picture of your dead baby - that's hard; this was not hard - just a challenge. So I sucked it up and kept going. Leg 3 Seegmiller Mt- 16 miles: I thought that when I finally made the ascent and started on the last section of the run I would be feeling better. My goal was to make it up the last climb, a 1000 footer in 1.5 miles and just enjoy the 8 on top. But the sun went down and it got very dark and my mind was just all over the place. I finally hit the 8 mile turnaround and headed back. The only thing I could do to try and take my mind off the unending run was sing hymns, so I sang/hummed loudly for the next hour or so, until I finally got back to the Jeep. I was never so happy to see that thing, and even happier when it started! 50 miles - I'll take my hat off to anyone that can finish that after having gone through that. But my legs felt great and the run was solid - 6:59:37 and 6000 ft of climbing. I may never do that again. (Landreth 773.75)

morning - 6 Parkway. Dog was antsy, so I took her around the block and then ran Parkway. It was nice with a little drizzle throughout. Felt pretty good, just not a lot in the legs obviously. (Landreth black 551.85) A decent week; missed a few miles here and there that I need to get out of bed for, but okay. Goals for next week: the next two weeks will be filled with track meets so the mileage will be way down - maybe around 90, but I am hesitant to even put a number on that. Keep in the weight room and keep working on core muscles as lower/deep abs are a just a little sore today and need further strengthening.

afternoon - 10 Green Springs/2450. Nice day out, but I can tell it is going to take a little time to get any strong runs back in me. Got home and took dog around. Wasn't able to get weights in today (sometimes life happens), but it shouldn't be a problem later in the week, so at least I'll get one day in - maybe I can sneak it in another time as well. AM - 10 Middleton. Nice morning run. Again, not a lot in the legs. But the runs aren't bad, just slow and easy. Ended by taking Molly around. (Stratus grey 86.1) afternoon - 6 Mall Run. AM - 12 Mall/2xAC/laps. Windy, windy, windy this morning. Started off feeling pretty strong, but by the end I was a bit wiped. Still a few days out; but the singles I'll have on Friday and Saturday will get the legs back - not that I am in any major rush. (Landreth orange 103.25) evening - 6 Treadmill. Took the dog out for a mile with both Py and Laney in the jogger - that was a chore. Then got on the treadmill and did 5 more easy miles. (Stratus bee 603.65)

AM - 11 Junction. Went out to the junction this morning then took the dog around. A good run; felt good and ran solid. Good end to a recovery week. (stratus grey 97.1)
Goals for next week: it will pobably look a lot like this week. Two meet this week with an invite Fri/Sat, so that cuts into a lot of time; and Ry's b-day on Monday, so I just get in what I can and be feeling light and fresh come the next week and get back into some good mileage again.

AM - 10 2xAC/2xHarts/some laps. Slept in a bit this morning as last night was not a great sleeper. Al was gone much of the night watching neighbor kids for what was supposed to be a few minutes but turned into a many hours as a baby was born - so I kept waking up knowing where she was at, but wondering. And the girls were up and down all night. Anyway... so I was a little behind this morning. Run was pretty junky too. Very flat and blah. Ran into the twins (James and Nate were dressed head-to-toe twinners) for a little on the last little addition I did to make it 10. (Landreth black 571.35) Ry's birthday today! afternoon - 11 barefoot/2xDI. Went out and got 5.5 in barefoot on the grass. Then warmed up with the team and hit the cooldown with them. Finished with a mile at home with Laney in the stroller, Ry on her bike, and Molly on the leash. Still felt pretty tired and crappy. Some of that may be due to the 90 heat. (Landreth 784.25)

AM - 12 Mall/2xAC/laps. Got up on time again this morning! Run was okay; I could tell I had only run once yesterday - legs a little flat and junky at first. The moon was awesome this morning as it was a perfect crescent right next to the morning star(planet - is it Venus? I'll have to look it up). But it was so close, like millimeters away; at one point even touching. As I watched it most of the run I caught a lash out of the top of my eye and looked up and saw a huge shooting star. Cool stuff. (Landreth orange 115.25) afternoon - 11 River Trail. took the team down for runs of 6,8,10 on the River Trail. It was a hot bugger and really put a strain on the system. Ran with Molly when I got home; then jumped in the pool - it was nice and cool. (Stratus black 309.1)

AM - 12 Mall/2xAC/laps. Usual morning practice routine. I am kind of in a lull right now. Hopefully next week I'll be ready to get back a little more, as I would like to move the mileage up a little from the last two weeks. (stratus grey 109.1)

AM - 11 Junction. Up early to get a few in before the trip up to Cedar for a track meet. A nice little run, despite being so tired. Got home and took the dog around. (Landreth orange 126.25)
Interesting couple weeks. Cut the mileage back significantly do to track with an eye on recovery, but I don't know if I really feel all that recovered - and recovered from what? Just high mileage I guess. But I am ready to get back some good mileage and tie in a few long runs - it has been awhile since I have gone anytihng over 13-15 or so. Goals for next week: bring the mileage back up and get in a solid long run. A busy week as Ry is getting baptised Saturday, so I won't be going up to BYU with the team.

| | AM - 13.5 Foremaster/2xAC/laps. Up just a little earlier this morning so I could get a little extra in. Still felt a little off - a 13 miler shouldn't really be a tough thing, but I just didn't feel like I think I should. I wonder if my body was kind of in a taper phase after I cut mileage the last two weeks? (Landreth black 584.85)
afternoon - 12 Green Springs/DI/2450. Ran 5 with the boys that are racing tomorrow, then caught the BYU bound boys and ran their cool down, and finally finished with 2450 and a run with Molly when I got home - even a little bit with Pyper! (Stratus bee 615.65) |

AM - 10.5 Wendy's. Went out on the Wendy's loop and then took Molly around the block. Temps out are perfect, just a little chill to keep it fresh. (Stratus grey 119.60) afternoon - 13.5. Started with 5 barefoot on the grass. Then had about a 25 minute break for a swine flu meeting at school. Then hit up 5 more with Kimz and Aust out in the firestation desert. Finished with 2450. Getting back, I was able to get a chiro adjustment from one of the kid's dads. It was the first time I have ever had one, I was cracking all over - kind of scary in a way. AM - 8.25 Green Springs. Took advantage of the smaller miles and slept in a few minutes. Nice little run around Green Springs loop. Pushed the pace coming down Quail Ridge - haven't done that often lately - will get into some Tinman stuff and Tempo stuff in the next couple weeks and that will be nice. (Stratus bee 623.90) afternoon - 13 Mall Trail to Nowhere/Webb Hill. Ran the Trail to Nowhere with the JV boys today with a nice pickup in the middle to their Temp pace (5:50) for a mile. Then went over to Webb and ran 2 sets of Meatgrinders/Fire Sides - up Meatgrinder and down Fire Side, then up Fire Side and down Meatgrinder. On the second time down Fire Side I saw something flash out of the corner of my eye, so I stopped. It was a beautifuly colored fox - every color from red to rusty orange, to brown - he just stopped and stared at me from about 5 feet away for 1-2 minutes until he decided to move on! It was very cool. Oh and the hills were tough. (Cumulus gold 352.15)

AM - 33 Wendy's/Quail. Got up and ran Wendy's then went down and ran Quail with James. On the way out we took the Lava Point trail to add a few miles - down by the river I noticed some blue string up in the cliffs, so I was staring at it - then I noticed two great horned owls sitting up in the cliffs, one in the nest must have been an adolescent - it looked just like an Ewok. Then just a few feet away on a crag was the adult. Two straight days of awesome animal sightings! Got fairly tired as we finished up the run into the wind. (Landreth orange 169.25)
Week was solid, got in another set of good miles and and decent long run. Goals for next week: It will be another busy one with region track on two days, so that will cut into the mileage a bit. So I will use it as a recovery. Then over the weekend we are up to SLC, so I think I may head up into the mountains for a hard mountain trail run - but we'll see.

AM - 12 Middleton/Warm Springs. I must congratulate myself for getting up today - because it just about didn't happen. Run was slow at first, solid at the end. Took Molly around for a mile as usual at the end. (Landreth black 596.85) afternoon - 16. About as uneventful as a run can get. DI with Austin and then ran laps while he did his workout; finished with DI for his cool. Then repeated the exact same thing with the rest of the team. Got home and Ry wanted to ride around the block, so I took the dog around again. (Cumulus white 656.35)

AM - 13 Target Loop. Decent run this morning. Some sections felt strong others a little slow. I have been throwing in a mile each morning this week at Tinman - or perceived pace, with no watch - to try and get a little speed and Tempo work going. Today I did 3. I felt good for the most part, but still have plenty of work to do before I am ready to run fast at anything. Ended taking Molly around the block. (Stratus black 335.1) afternoon - 7 barefoot/grass. Went out on my prep and got 7 in on the grass barefooting before heading off to region. Run felt fine - grass is good.

AM - 13 Fields. Looped into the fields for 12 this morning. I once again had a hard time getting up and almost used an achy left lower/outside leg as an excuse not to run. Very happy I went though as the leg didn't give me any problems and I did 3 at attempted Tinman pace. Was able to get to 6:00 without any real issues, but when I lost focus it was easy to slow down as well which led to the averages on the three to be at 6:teens; it is just a matter of not doing Tempo for awhile and just getting back at it. Finished by taking the dog around where I ran into Mom out for a little run of her own! (Stratus bee 636.9)
noon - 7 barefoot/grass. Sneaked out during lunch and the first part of my prep for another 7 barefoot. With region it is impossible to run after. The pain in my leg is there a little still, but I think it is from all the laps yesterday. So today I switched up the direction every mile and it seemed to take the pressure off that spot. Will keep an eye on it for a few days to make sure it is no big deal.

| | evening - 10.5 Sego Lily. Body and mind were both hammered this morning and I couldn't even function let alone get up to run, so I am glad I got this in once we got to SLC. Instead of the usual Sego Lily loop, I ran down and looped around the library and came back the same way; then went over the top (with a .5 detour do to a wrong turn) and dropped down Sego Lily and looped around the library and came back up. Definitely a hill workout every time I run up here. (Cumulus white 666.85) |

Race for the Cure (3.1 Miles) 00:30:00
Started off the morning running the Race for a Cure with Ally's family. We all ran in memory of Al's Aunt Kitty who just passed away around Thanksgiving and in celebration of Al's mom who has just ended her treatments and looks to be getting over this beast. Ry said she wanted to actually run so I ran with her. Taking away the time it took to walk to the start, her bathroom break, and the walk to the finish because of the back up of thousands or runners, she did it in right around 30 minutes! I was so impressed. She held my hand for most of the run - since she is a little timid around crowds - and told me her legs hurt a bit; but whenever I asked her if she wanted to walk she said no. Two times she did walk, but it was for about 1 1/2 steps and suddenly she was pulling my hand again to get going! It was a lot of fun to run with her and a neat event. Not bad for an 8 year old; she runs at school a mile once a week in PE and quite often the same during lunch and recess, and of course she is in great shape from her swimming where she places against 12 year olds. But I have been very careful not to be pushy - I don't want to be one of THOSE parents. noon - 30.25 Bell Canyon/Little Cottonwood. After eating I headed up Bell Canyon Trail. I thought I would be able to get more miles here than I did, but I quickly ran into the snow at about mile 5 (2.5 miles of trail) so I headed down - but it still gave me a great climb, up to over 6700 ft. - 1700 climb; and was able to go on Maggie and my favorite trail when we lived up here (so that was fun to think about). Then I dinked around trying to find another trail in the area, but nothing - so I got kind of frustrated and just decided to run up Little Cottonwood. And UP it was - took me to 8900 ft in the 10 miles to the very top of the road - a 3700 ft. climb. Brought it back down very easy as to avoid thrashing the legs as much as possible. Very pretty up there with a lot of cool waterfalls and snow drifts in the cliffs. (Stratus bee 670.35) Held the week together pretty good - it was tough some times. Goals for next week: Busy week with the end of school nearing and state track, so it will be a recovery week. Mileage may be around 90. Work on some more tempo stuff.

AM - 10 Middleton. Just plodded along and took Molly out. (Stratus grey 139.85) Interesting side note, I just realized I spell grey with an ey and it was coming up wrong, so I looked it up and the ey is the British ending ay is the American ending. But when I spell it gray it looks and feels wrong. Hum... whatever. afternoon - 10 DI and laps. Warmed up with the boys and then ran laps while they did their workout. Then finished with DI cool and a couple 800 loops. Still a bit tired in the legs. Hot out. (Landreth black 606.85) I now know why Ry was able to do so well in the 5K; she has lungs like a whale! Today was her swim-a-thon and she swam 100 laps (200 lengths of the pool) - that is nearly 3 miles, in just over an hour. She swam the whole time, no stopping. I jumped in and did a few laps and 4 about killed me.

AM - 10 Green Springs/Warm Springs. It has been nice to catch an extra few minutes of sleep this week. Run was a bit better today. Tried to hit 3 Tinman, but wasn't totally on. Took the dog around. Wore a new pair of Saucony Triumphs (I know... Saucony - but they felt good). (Triumph 10)

Effort at times was still a little harder than necessary, but at other times it felt smooth. So hopefully that is a good sign. (Landreth orange191.15) afternoon - 7 Shoe Run. A short turn around, the heat, and the harder run earlier made me spent. It was a good thing it was easy, because I had nothing. Got home and took Molly around. (Landreth orange 198.15)

AM - 10.5 Wendy's. Man this was pretty crappy to start. The legs felt worse than yesterday; however, they did slowly get into it. Ended by taking Molly around. Now it is off to state. (Triumph 20.5)
evening - 4 Lehi. Just went with the distance runners on little 4 around Lehi, getting yelled at by the local yocals, to stretch the legs out. (Triumph 24.5)
|
| |
| | evening - 10 Lehi. Thought about getting up early and running before the meet, but I slept so crappy last night that I just decided to run in the evening (that's kind of my tradition anyway). So ran from hotel up into the new section of Lehi uptoward Timpanogos. I really felt good and had to kind of hold myself back from just letting it loose. The point of this week was to let myself feel this way for a day or two. (Triumph 34.5) |

| |
noon - 10.7 Y. After the 3200's ran with Austin and Trevor up to the Y from the track. That was a pretty beastly experience as I almost lost my banana nut muffin. After coming down, we went along the Bonneville Shoreline Trail for a few and then ice bathed in a stream right off the snow pack (nothing colder, ever). Then we worked our way back to the track. Run felt great except for the climb up to the Y. (Triumph 45.1) Goals for next week: Get back on some bigger miles and start some workouts if I am going to do SanFran.

AM - Big Workout #17 - 16 Fields. 4 warm/4 cool with 7 Tinman in between. Tinman went very well for the most part. I felt very good, just like I think this pace should be - controlled, relaxed, and quick. But during the 6th and 7th miles I had to work a lot harder as I felt myself starting to lose juice in the legs - even felt like I needed to throw up again around the halfway mark of mile 6, but it went away after a couple minutes. Kept pace within a fwe seconds each way with 6 and 7 dropping to 6:07's each. Finished and took Molly around for a mile. (Stratus grey 155.85) afternoon - 9 GS/PL/Midd. Summer has arrived - 106 degrees on this run! Soaked my shirt at the upper Green Springs park and tied it around my head as I ran through the desert and the heat didn't seem as bad. (Landreth 808.75)

AM - 13 Target. A very tired run this morning. I think the heat took a lot out of me yesterday, as well as the Tinman yesterday. It will be interesting to see if I can hold this crap for long. The summer is so different than the spring. Finished by taking Molly around. (Landreth orange 211.15) Counted up my barefoot mileage for the year so far and added it as a shoe. afternoon - 9 barefoot/grass. Went out and hit some grass hoping that it would take pressure off the top of my left foot which has been giving me pain the last two days. It felt good. The wind picked up a bit and helped it feel a little cooler. (barefoot 77.75)

Hot down on that blasted trail; I don't know why I go on that heat infested oven. Even with the temps not at 100, it just sucks you dry down there. Went home and slept for 1 1/2 hours. AM - Big Workout #16 - 6x1000. Warmed up to the school and did the DI at Tinman. Then started into the 1000's. It had been a couple months since I had tried anything like this, so I was a little concerned. Times were at the upper end of the range (3:19-3:23) 1-3:23, 2-3:22, 3-3:24, 4-3:23, 5-3:22, 6-3:21 with a 200 jog at 1:15 between. I didn't feel great, but not bad either; it is just hard to do this type of workout when you haven't for awhile. I also decided that high mileage is going to make times on these workouts in the high range, but as long as I can keep it at least in the range of where it is supposed to be I will take the trade off - I mean, I am already in both feet on this high mileage stuff; I am not a burner anyway, so let's see where this takes me. Cooled off back home by way of DI and Fire Station and a mile with Molly. (Triumph 60.2) noon - 8 Grapevine/Coral Canyon. I ran again today. The foot felt really good, but the heat is getting me so I took another nap after I got home from graduation. (Cumulus gold 370.15)

AM - 8 Green Springs. Slept in a little! Nice overcast morning, so I hope that holds on to this afternoon. Ran Green Springs very easy and took Molly around. Legs are a little sore from yesterday I guess. (Stratus bee 678.25) noon - 21.5 Pine Valley. There are 20 mile runs and then there are 20 mile experiences - this was an experience. Started at Silver Reef with the intent of running up to Oak Grove and up the Summit Trail to the top of Pine Valley, then around on the trail up there and back. I hadn't ever done this before, but have heard that the trail is just as steep as possible. Started off at 3700 ft. at Silver Reef and started up to Oak Grove - this 7+ mile section is in of itself a climber, up to 6800 ft. Saw a very cool Red Tail Hawk flying with a snake in its claws. Got to Oak Grove and started up the trail; basically it is 3+ miles and nearly 3500 ft elevation gain. There was a lot of hiking and wishing that I hadn't done this, but at the same time it was remarkable. The views were undescribable and the challenge was amazing. I finally got to the top of the trail and told myself that there was no way I was getting up here without summitting, which was another few hundred feet up and about 1/2, but the trail was covered with snow and unfollowable. So I just started working my way up crashing through the drifts and occasionally folling through only stopping at my hips and getting cut up by the hidden rocks and trees. I finally reached the pinnacle and stopped to eat and just chill at 10261 ft! I just relaxed and took it all in. Got kind of lost on my way back to the main trail, but finally found it. Had to carefully work my way back down the mountain as to not fall (which would have dropped me straight off the cliffs) - only had a few slips and was able to grab some bushes and rocks as to prevent a serious problem. Eventually got back to Oak Grove and strated back on the dirt road back to the Jeep. Finally after 4:45 minutes and 21.5 miles (including a seven mile progression down Oak Grove 7:00 - 6:00) I was finished. Got into the stream and drank a lot of water and gatorade and kind of releved in what I had just done. Didn't quite the mileage I wanted, but there was no way to run on top with the snow and my legs were way too beat up to add anything on at the end; no big deal though. (Landreth 830.25)

morning - 10 Washington Loop/Parkway. Legs were spent today, barely made it through the run. Took Molly around when I finished. (Cumulus white 676.85) Week went well getting into marathon training. Legs are a bit shot now, hopefully they will bounce back a little more this weekend. Goals for next week: Make it about the same as this week - mileage, big workouts, survive the summer heat.

AM - Big Workout #15 8 Tinman (17). Warmed up plenty easy and slow; still stiff from Friday and wasn't sure how this would go. Got into the Tinman and it started to roll decent, but quickly went away. So I just tried to hold it solid. All the miles were around the 6:05 mark except mile 4 where I just seemed to fall apart. I decided to either cut the workout or stop for just a second and regroup - so I stopped to regroup and kind of pulled it back together and hit a 6:20 and the next 4 weren't too bad. Got back and took Molly around. (Stratus grey 172.85)

Ran over to the city fields (just .5 away) and ran 7 barefoot miles and then ended with 8xbarefoot striders. AM - Big Workout #14 3xmile. I am kind of down on myself for this workout. It was supposed to be 7 miles at LT (5:30), but I could barely get the three in at 5:41,40, and 39. So I just called her quits for today and came home. Since Ally and I have decided not to go to San Fran, my workout schedule has become much more open, so I will come back and try this one again a couple times to work up to the 7 and bring the times down with a little fresher legs. Did the workout on the Lava Point section of the River Trail - went out toward Coral Canyon and started my 2 mile Tinman, which were hideous and a warning of things to come, then down past the dump onto the trail. Good place for repeats, but the body just couldn't give it today. Came home and took Molly around. (Triumph 72.85) evening - 8.25 Club Run. Went out into the fields. I worked to keep everyone pretty slow and easy with my yelling and complaining - worked on everyone but the high schoolers! (Stratus bee 686.5)

AM - 26.2 Green Valley. Set out to run 25-30 this morning and it ended up landing right at a marathon. Ran out through Green Valley and up the trail we used to run for Club Runs out of the old store and over the top of tortoise road, back into Washington and out to the Parkway and home through the desert - ended by taking Molly around. Had a tough point at around 18 or so that I really just wanted to be done, seems that is always a difficult point in runs. (Landreth orange 250.35)
Week was okay, but ended pretty tired. Ready to get this stupid race done with. Goals for the week: taper a little. Survive!

AM - Big Workout #13 9 Tinman (17.65). Did my usual Tempo route out into the Fields. Was a little nervous after struggling a bit last week on 8 and now moving to 9, but it turned out very good. First mile was 6:05 then everything else was better - from 5:51-6:01. This workout went how a Tinman should, difficult but not killer. Felt smooth and relaxed for most of it. Maybe that was because I saw Clyde out running and it sent memories of The Circle back to me subconsciously and the body responded! Finished by taking dog around. Anyway, I have reworked my workouts for the rest of the summer w/o SanFran and I will be doing this workout a few more times (mostly on the weeks before races: Squaw this week, Bryce, and Provo). Now to enjoy a little taper, glycogen replenish starts tomorrow night, and easy jog this afternoon. (Triumph 90.5) afternoon - 8 City Wells. Used to call this Grapevine - but I do a lot of runs that stay on the south part of the freeway at Grapevine and some on the north/desert part of Grapevine, so James calls this one City Wells (North/desert) so I'll start using that. Legs were tired just like they should be. (Landreth 838.25)

AM - 11 Parkway x 2. Went out on the Parkway on my own, then went on it for the first day of practice. Finished by taking Molly around. (Landreth orange 261.35)
afternoon - 5 barefoot grass. Ran over to the ball fields and ran 4 miles easy on the grass including 8xstriders. A five miler seems to short for my body to really warm up and get the kinks out. But on the positive side, got home and was able to start carbo loading after the glycogen dump yesterday. This is good, because it is very hard to avoid carbs in my eating; and I think it makes me pretty pissy. (cumulus white 690.85) (barefoot '09 92.75)

| Race: |
Squaw Peak 50 Mile Trail Run (51.4 Miles) 08:17:14, Place overall: 3
Squaw Peak 50 Mile Trail Run (I've posted my Garmin total for the race - since I am sure the race isn't a perfect 50 and I missed 2 turns and ran extra - dang rookie). Well the best summary is that my endurance, strength, and overall speed (or the marathoning type) was overcome by my inexperience today! The top three (us who eventually became the top 3) moved easy away from everyone after the first aide station and we went to the dirt. I stayed back in third to get a feel for it all. Then the 2nd guy moved over and let me through, and I slowly worked my way toward the leader (he was an absolute mt. goat - he could hike faster than I could run). On the long climb (climb #2) I stayed just behind him and he finally joked to "quit stalking me and get up here." So took the lead and ran very strong up the climb building a couple minute lead; only to miss a turn and lose it all. Then I got it back and lost it again because my fingers were frozen and I couldn't work the zipper on my shorts or the baggy to get my sandwich out. But then I got it back and nailed the drop back into Hobble with some sick 6 minutes (maybe even a couple high 5'ers), building a 6+ minute lead. I really didn't care to win, but it was kind of fun thinking I might - but also very stressful since I had already screwed up. Anyway, Scott, the eventual winner, caught back up to me around mile 34, as I missed another dang set of flagging and ran up the wrong trail for another couple hundred yards, and chased me up climb #4 and took the lead just before the windy pass beast. Climbing Windy Pass was the most hideous thing that I have ever done in running; it was straight up the monstrous mountain with no trail, no switchbacks, no hope of it ever ending! Here he put first three minutes on me; then another; and yet more when I started falling all over in the snow (I about fell off the flipping mountain numerous times - except I wasn't calling it flipping). At the top, the aide station told me he was six minutes up; I lost hope of catching him, and the third guy got me, said an encouraging word and went on by. The struggles only began - I started falling numerous times (I truthfully fell at least 10 times coming down the mountain). I was so tired I couldn't get my legs up at all and hit every rock, root, and toe grabber there was. Finally I got done with that thing and finished the last few down the canyon back to the park. The whole time hoping no one was near, since I couldn't hold them off. Turns out the fourth guy came in nearly 30 minutes back so no worries. And the first two who I thought were LONG gone were only 10 and 8'ish minutes up; not as bad as I thought. (Landreth 889.65)
My thoughts: well that is done with and I don't ever have to do it again. Now to rest; for who knows how long! Coming back to add a little more: I think that I could probably cut at least the 17 minutes to go break into the 7's pretty easily if I ever did this again (if the weather/conditions was as perfect as it was this time). Things I would work on: first, keep with the use it while you got it idea. Some might not think this is good, but I guarantee you are going to be hammered on the last 1/5 of this run, so might as well go decent while you can. So for me that would mean daring to go out a little more. I was very timid at the first. Not that I would want to run 5:00's down the trail, but I could have put myself in a better position and gone a little better on climb #1. Secondly, it would be good to have my support meet me at the bottom of Hobble and just give a bottle on the go and meet at the top with replenished full bottles instead of nothing clear up to aide 6 and stopping there for a few minutes. Of course a pacer would always be good and from the bottom of Hobble up to maybe aide 7 or 8 would be a good help. Third, on the big hill don't get so down and just know that it too will pass and try to run a couple more of the less steep sections as you top out. Finally, I think the general experience would lead to a lot and keep the confidence up. Anyway a good experience, especially the training for it aspect; I saw and did a lot of neat stuff that I probably would have never have done without this race. I will probably be back some day.

morning - Big Workout #13 9 Tinman (DNF). Apparently my legs weren't as ready as I thought they were when I started out. Warmed up with Molly's Mile and then into the Fields. First TM mile showed signs of struggle, but really nothing too far out of the ordinary - 6:05, just where I was two weeks ago when I did this workout. Followed it up with a 6:01, but I had to work too hard for it. Struggled through a couple more and then decided to slow up for the 4.5-5 section to try and finish the workout. Only took .5 more to realize that it just wasn't going to work, so I brought it on home with an easy run the rest of the way. Hopefully by getting the legs going a little, even though I didn't finish, it tells the body that it is time to get back on track. I'll decide later in the week if I'll try 1000's on Thursday. (Triumph 122)
noon - 8 Grapevine/Coral Canyon. Didn't have a much of a turnaround on this one, but I was tired anyway and knew it would be slow so why delay. Saw that the temps are going to get to 100 by the end of the week, not really excited about that. (Cumulus white 707.85)

AM - Big Workout #14 - 5xLT miles. Did this workout a couple weeks ago and really crapped out accomplishing only 3 repeats at 5:40 instead of the desired 5:30. So today I had a goal of getting 5 and next time I will get the 7 that the workout calls for. Did my warm up on the Parkway finishing with 2 TM miles. Then got back to get on the treadmill as Al is out of town for the rest of the weekend. Did one more warm up mile on the treadmill to get a feel for it and then did my miles. They went well. Pace was 5:30 with 1 min. recovery jog. Felt pretty good and could have maybe dragged out 1 or 2 more, but remembering my struggle with TM on Monday, I decided no need to kill myself coming back this week, just get moving in the right direction. Finished with 2.5 cool. (Stratus grey 199.85)

AM - 9 Treadmill. Tried to get going before the girls got up, didn't work out so well - not because of me, but because they were up too. Ran 8 then took Molly around for her mile. She did good after not running yesterday because of a minor surgery to get a fox tail out of her ear. (Landreth black 660.35) afternoon - 7 Grass/Barefoot. Took the girls over to Little Valley so they could play at the park while I ran on the grass - way better than the treadmill again. Although the temps were much hotter today, it wasn't too bad, especially getting in the water after with the girls. Finished with 6xbarefoot striders. (Barefoot '09 100.75)

AM - 25 treadmill. Well actually 24 on the treadmill with the last mile taking the dog around the block while pushing Laney in the jogger. A good workout, but kind of a beast on the treadmill for that long - but I had 3 track meets recorded to help take up the time and the girls slept in a little better than yesterday to make it a lot easier. Started off easy for a mile and then just started slowly increasing the pace. Through in inclines similar to that of SGM - a 6% for a mile at 7 followed by 3% for the next three miles, and a .5 3% at 17.5-18 followed by a mile at 4%. Right after that I did a progressive tempo with 2 miles at 6:00 (TM), then 2 at 5:42 (MP) and last one at 5:36 (kind of a tweener of LT and MP). Good workout. (Landreth orange 307.35)
Week was okay. Hopefully I can say that I am more recovered even with the good mileage and a couple decent workouts. Goals for next week: Pretty much the same as this week (1000's instead of miles, though). Want to make it a very good one with the week after going to Cali and going to be just a fun week with single runs and whatever chill distance I feel like.

AM - Big Workout #13 9TM. Still a bit flat today. Warmed up in Dogtown and up to Zion's Bank, so I could make sure I was back in time for practice cutting the cool down if necessary. This made it so that my Tinman miles were in a different location than usual in the Fields - started at bridge, so basically everything was moved up 2 'ish miles. Lost focus a few times, had a hard time getting going, yelled at myself numerous times, had some good miles/sections, had to work pretty hard on tired legs. A bit frustrating. There are plenty of excuses, but these are important workouts and I would like to be nailing these workouts and today I bairly made it through (times were between on and 15 seconds slow). I think next week very easy will good for my body and mind, but I need to hit this week. Got to practice and decided to run with the boys since they were all sore and tired from Wasatch Back and would be going slow anyway. Molly's mile at the end. (Triumph 143.8) afternoon - 8 City Wells. A definite water bottle day; summer is now here. (Cumulus white 715.85)

AM - 13.2 Washington Loop/Green Springs. Felt kind of sore this morning and pretty tired throughout. Got home from practice and ran Molly's Mile with Five Fingers. afternoon - 10 Sunrise. Went out on the Lava Point Trail (via King's Row to plan out route for 1000's) and on out past Sunrise - the cattle guard is exaclty 5. On the way back I decided to run through the river. So I took off the shoes and started down, but I only got a quarter mile or so and decided there were too many rocky sections to keep going. So I just swam around for a few minutes and then got back up onto the trail. (Stratus bee 717.25))(Barefoot '09 101.5)

AM - Big Workout #12 8x1000's. Well at least I finished it. Extended the Parkway through town to get the warmup mileage. The 2 TM miles were pretty junky. Ran the 1000's up and down King's Row road which is pretty flat (75' loss/gain) and straight. Although the times were weak the effort was there, so that is something positive out of it. Odds were incline, evens decline (1&3-3:40, 5-3:35, 7-3:37)(2&4-3:20, 6-3:18, 8-3:19). Maybe legs will come back with a very easy week next week. Ran home and switched into Five Fingers for practice. Ran an easy 3 at pratice and 8xbarefoots. The Five Fingers rubbed a little on top of right big toe. (Stratus grey 211.85)(Barefoot '09 106)(Five Fingers 10.75) evening - 8.25 Club Run. Steve, Bill, James and I headed out on the Shinob Kibe Roller Coaster for club tonight. | | Nothing today. After yesterday's run, I felt my back tighten up and start pinching off a nerve. Within a couple minutes I could barely move. I don't know why it happened and it was weird that it happened while I was already awake not while I was sleeping like happens sometimes. |

| | Decided to sleep in so I wouldn't fall asleep on the drive home. Probably a good move since the drive was a beastly 10 hour marathon through the traffic, heat, and flat tires. |
| | AM - 17.35 Steven Abraham Lincoln Hooper Memorial Run. This year the run lost a lot of its luster. I ran hideously; my stomach was twisting and the legs had nothing - truthfully one of the worst runs I have ever had. I did enjoy the ice-bath in the stream at the end, however. (Landreth 923) The many, many, many hours on my feet at Disneyland didn't let me recover like I had hoped. But I had fun, and it was nice to take a little break. Goals for next week: Hit my hard workouts good. I've decided that to do this and because of the intense summer heat, I am going to have to let go of the big mileage and back down to 100-110's. So that's what I'll be looking for.

AM - Big Workout #11 - 2m/1m/2m/1m/2m w/2 minute recovery jog. Goal was to be at LT, I was nowhere near. It was a pretty discouraging workout. But I tried to keep calm about it by telling myself that it wasn't until after Bryce that I even started these workouts last year, so hopefully with cutting mileage a bit and having a bigger base, as well as getting a jump on the workouts things will turn out all right in the end. For the workout, I ran down to Dog Pound for the three warm up and started into the first set just after leaving the industrial park heading down onto the River Trail (which meant the last mile was going to be uphill, but the first was going to be downhill - hopefully getting me started on the good foot). But I only hit 5:40 for the first two miles and finished just about losing whatever was in my stomach. (It is embarrassing to write out the times, but I guess I will for future reference.) The next mile I hit only 5:50, then 2 6:00's, followed by a single 6:00, and ended with a 6:15 and worse on the last mile (I just can't bring myself to write that one out, it was ugly). My hips really froze up on me. Cooled for three back to practice and a couple with the kids as they started and headed home. Did Molly's Mile; she did well considering she hadn't run in over a week. (Stratus grey 229.35)(Barefoot '09 106.5)
afternoon - 5 Grapevine. A true burner today. I've decided that to allow myself to cut back mileage, pretty much all my second runs will just be 5 or so - hopefully that will help me get some legs for my Big Workouts over the next few months, but also keep a solid amount of mileage that is also important. Feet got pretty hot in the Five Fingers; I thought I might get some blisters, but they held out okay. (Five Fingers 16.75) pool running - 10 minutes

AM - 9.3 Dogtown/Staheli Hill. Took Molly out and then ran around Dogtown before practice. For practice took boys down to Staheli Hill as they ran hills I ran 10x10 sec hills. This is something I need to do more of - it is an easy way to work on the explosion, leg strength, and hill work without wiping myself out for my big workouts - so I will make sure I do them once a week for the next while. Boys looked very strong on hills today - get Danny healthy and this team will be well on its way. (Landreth black 689.05)(Barefoot '09 107.5) pool running - 10 mins (easy/hard). Although this isn't really long enough to kill me (which is actually what I want), I think the pool running helps my hips, so I am going to get this going a bit more as well. afternoon - 5.25 Elem. Grass. Ran over to Wash. Elem in five fingers and then ran 3 barefoot and 8xbarefoot striders. Feel a little better the last two days, hopefully I can have a little better workout tomorrow. AM - Big Workout #10 7m at MP - well kind of - actually turned into 8 pretty much at TM. Warmed up with Molly's Mile and then around Dogtown; then headed into the Fields for the tempo stuff. After some very poor efforts lately, I wasn't sure where this one was headed. Although I didn't really hit Marathon Pace, instead hung out around Tinman (a couple miles lower and closer to MP, including the extra mile ran because my math brain is gone when I am trying to run hard). Then came back up and ran an easy 4 as part of my cool down with the team for morning practice. I think the legs are coming around a little. The effort was pretty hard today, and although the times weren't MP, there were a few miles where I felt way off and the times didn't slip below TM. So I am thinking/hoping that in a few more days they may be prepared the race. (Triumph 162.1)(Barefoot '09 112)

AM - 19.2 SGM Course/Snow Canyon. Came down the course from Veyo and turned down SC. Kept it pretty easy and under control. Once hitting the Parkway, picked it up a little for the next 4-5. Got home and took Molly for her mile. (Landreth orange 356.8)
Week was decent. Started to feel like the legs were coming back, until I got sick. But today I felt a little better (enough to run). Goals for next week: one solid Big Workout on Monday and then keep working on getting something back into my legs with some easy days, hoping to do well at Bryce. Mileage will be quite controlled.

| | Big Workout #9 - 2min @ CV/1min off; 3mTM - 15. Warmed up with the 4.5 Dogtown loop; then moved onto the treadmill to do the workout (changed into Ohana racers since I haven't worn them since Jan.). Went 2 minutes at 5:21 pace and then recovered for a minute x10. Really felt good. After, jumped right into the3 miles at Tinman (5:52). The treadmill accomplished just what I wanted - I wouldn't have been able to maintain the correct pace out on my own, but on the treadmill it was very solid. Cooled down with Molly's Mile and then to practice and back. Only run today - glycogen depletion for the next 24 hours - boo! (Triumph 168.6)(Ohana 139.75)(Barefoot '09 112.5) |

Bryce Canyon 1/2 Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:11:45, Place overall: 7, Place in age division: 1 | | Bryce Canyon 1/2 Marathon - pretty frustrating and disappointing race. Got up to the start in the morning and saw Nick M., Mike V., and Seth W.; also Theo and Shaun Martin. I planned on going out with Mike (the last two years he held back a little on the downhill and got me around mile 6-7, so I thought I could hold back with him and see if it led to a stronger finishing 10K). Started off okay, the lead group was up about 20 meters, so I worked up to them about .75 into it. Went through mile 1 in pretty much the same as the last two years, but the pace seemed just too hot for me; so as Seth started to push the group, I just fell back (which put me all by myself for pretty much the whole race). I also fell off the pace significantly for this mile and most of the downhill miles. Here and there I would have a good section and then I would have plenty of bad ones. Some of them were so poor I don't even know what I was doing. I still had hopes of reeling people in as Seth continued to stretch out the group. I eventually caught the high school kid that had tried to lead and the 6th place guy was only a couple hundred meters ahead of me (around mile 7). Just then I come around a corner and see Vick coming out of a bathroom and now 5th and 6th are only barely up on me. Then I fade dramatically. Pass Vick as he hits another b-room break and start to try and real in 5th again only to have a major sick feeling hit me. My youngest had been sick the night before and I think it hit me a little. I felt way cold and flushed and just drained almost automatically. As soon as that happened (at 10'ish) I gave up and another guy passed me, and I just jogged in. Here are the splits from the last few years for comparison: Mile

I really don't know what to say. I thought I was in shape for a 1:08 (and if I would have gone after 5th that's what he got - I still think I could have got it but it just wasn't my day). Some days it just doesn't click. But I am pretty bummed about this. I have been working so hard and I don't know if I have gained anything. Is it even worth it? I could probably just go out and run 60 miles/week and have less hard workouts and run only a few minutes slower, so I am just not sure where I am at with my running. It is easy to tell others (friends, kids, etc..) to get back on and learn from the tough ones, but doing it yourself is a whole other story. I guess I'll just see what I want to do when Monday morning comes around.

AM - 11.25 Green Springs. Ran over to practice early and ran barefoot for a few. Then we ran into Green Springs and I went with the girls on their fartlek workout. Molly's Mile. Legs were a bit sore today - but do feel a little better after running. After a long weekend seriously pondering my running future I guess the only thing to do after a disappointing race is to get back on my feet and try again; it just seemed like the thing to do when the alarm went off. AM - 11.4 Wet Sandy Trail. Steve and I went up to the Wet Sandy Trailhead, just below Oak Grove. I had never run this trail, but I wanted/needed one more trail fix before marathon training kicks in heavy and XC takes away all my weekends. The first 5 of this trail was awesome! Crossed streams, in ponderosa forest, fern covered meadows as we skirted the base of Pine Valley at 7000 ft. But then the trail just went dead; we hacked around for awhile and tried to find it again, but it was very vague and just crashed through scrub oak and manzanita. I had hoped (and thought) that it worked its way up to the top of the mountain and connected up with the Summit Trail (near the Whipple Trail), but if that is the case we missed it/lost it/or didn't go far enough. So after getting torn up, we just turned and brought it back. The streams were so nice and cold and tasted great. Not really as much mileage as I wanted, but it was 3 hours and really neat until where we turned around - even the rattlesnake I almost stepped on (beautiful gold and tan colors highlighting the diamondback pattern). (Landreth 938.4)
End to a very chill week. I feel a bit better about things than last weekend and am ready to get to it next week.

AM - Big Workout #17. 7 TM. Decided to start my workout sequence over again and see if I can't get it right this time. Warmed up with Warm Springs 4. Then came home and got on the treadmill for 7 Tinman miles. Set the pace at 5:52 and it went great. Moved the pace down to 5:49 for just the last .5 mile to work on having a stronger finish (but didn't want to overdo it). Then cooled down around King's Row and to practice with Molly, .5 barefoot for team warm up and after timing some 1000's for the boys ran back home. Hip flexor was a bit touchy to warm up today, but had absolutely no issues during the workout, then started to ache a bit on the cool down (after that weird pain attack on Sat. night). (Triumph 183.1)(Barefoot '09 124.65)
afternoon - 4 Grapevine. Hadn't done an afternoon run for a couple weeks (hadn't done an early morning workout in a couple for that matter), but heat didn't kill me. Just took it easy and kept it short. (Five Fingers 23)

afternoon - 4 City Wells. Waited for some rain but it never came, so I ran in the heat up toward City Wells. Took it nice and easy, but didn't get far (wasn't planning on it) when hip started to hurt a little at 2 I turned around and brought it back. (Five Fingers 27)

| | AM - Big Workout #16 (attempt #1) 6x1000's CV pace. Got out and did my warm up and hip just wasn't feeling good at all. I thought I would try to get into the TM and see if the pain subsided. It didn't. I went back to bed very discouraged - even drove to practice. Decided I will take the weekend off as we head to SLC. Disappointing because I had some trail runs planned for up there, but maybe the few days off will get it better. I figure it is an overuse injury and I don't want it to bug me all summer, so I need to get it better now. (Landreth 941.4)(old Ohana -.3, planning on doing some of the quicker stuff this season in these to get a feel for racing in them better, but I don't know the mileage on them - maybe I'll go back and add it up, maybe not) |
|
| | 0 - hip not feeling any better. Mostly hurts at night. When I move around in bed it wakes me up. |
| | 0 - I look up at the mountains and just get mad that I could have been running in them all weekend instead of sitting on my butt. |
| |
AM - 8.75 Big Workout #16 (attempt #2) 6x1000's CV. Hip hurt again last night and I was very discouraged and didn't want to get up. So I slept in a little and decided I could try to do these with my boys (as they were doing 8x1000's, but on the grass). Eventually got up and went and got my warm up in. Hip had some soreness in it, but it did loosen up as I got into the 2 TM miles - even hit the pace on them, but almost threw up after the first. Started off on the first and just hung behind Austin and Kimz. I could tell this wasn't going to work as I would have lost breakfast if I had eaten anything. So I hung it up again and decided I would just retire to coaching. Took Molly around after getting back from practice. (Stratus grey 238.1) afternoon - 11 Big Workout #16 (attempt #3) 6x1000's CV. Throughout the day I kept thinking about not completing this workout and how I had got on one of my runners for not sucking it up when it really gets tough and relying only on talent (and man is he talented!) and not hard work (those who know my team can probably guess who I am talking about). My words kind of haunted me and I decided I need to suck it up. So I went down into the inferno which is my basement (unfinished with no air, just a fan blowing on me) and jumped on the treadmill. Ran 2 warm up in the Five Fingers and then took it down to TM pace (5:52) for two. This was easily the fastest I have ever run in the Fingers, but it felt great and my hip wasn't bugging at all. Switched into the old Ohanas and started cranking out the 1000's with 2 minutes rest at (2)5:13 pace (3:12'ish), (2)5:10 pace (3:11'ish), and the final 2 at 5:07 pace (3:10'ish). I felt strong, and although it was tough and I nearly threw up near the end, I finally completed this dang workout! Cooled down for two back in the Fingers. (Five Fingers 37)(Old Ohana -5)

| | AM - Big Workout #15 8 TM. SGM course. Ran with a good group of Steven, James, and Logan; fun group of guys to run with, we have fun and enjoy it, chatted about "Born to Run" with Logan since I read it Weds and Thurs. Kept it nice and chill as we enjoyed the cool temps up near Brookside. Coming off the volcano we move it into tempo. For the next 8 I hit 5:20's-5:50's (depending on the terrain) and worked on pushing off from the feet and keeping a quick, solid stride - to me it felt like running should really feel. Even though I had some kinks, I felt very good for not having run much this week and the pace was very easy to come by without overdoing it. Thoughts went to Holden for awhile as I moved away from everyone; its fun to think about him, but way sad too. Finished up and turned to go back and get everyone, and happily they were all just right on my tail; good runs for all. (Triumph 203.8)
What a week. Running couldn't have been more secondary this week, but it also was a wonderful release. Goals for next week: Try and keep it focused during big workouts. Get ready for the meet. Get ready for school (Thursday, yikes). And keep on dealing with it all.

noon - Big Workout #14 7xmile LT - 15. Had no desire to every run again this morning. Of course I knew this would pass, but it has become a very strong feeling for me lately - either I don't want to run at all or I just can't wait to get out and have the release. So I didn't fight it and figured I would want to hit this run at some other point. So I came home from school meetings to check on Ally and decided to run it on the treadmill. Warmed up with 3 and then 2 TM - interrupted the 2nd TM to put my old Ohanas on. I was a bit intimidated by this workout, especially since I didn't do it last year as I was tapering a little for Provo 1/2. I really tried to only worry about the repeat I was on and not the many upcoming ones. Pace was 5:27 for each of the first 6 and 5:24 for the last with a .15 recovery. Then I cooled for 2 more. Workout was tough, but not the most hideous thing I have ever attempted, although the girls did look strangely at me as I grunted through the last few. (Five Fingers 49.1)(Old Ohanas -11.4)

Tough running up there, with major hills and very rocky trail stuff. No carbs or electrolytes on the run made me pretty wiped by the end. (Landreth orange 392.2)

PM/AM (?) - Big Workout #13 9TM. 15 miles Treadmill. Yesterday was a tough one in the morning. Some days I feel I have lost all desire to run - other days it is the best release there is. After all that has happened I am having a tough time snapping out of it. So anyway... I didn't get up yesterday to do this workout and didn't have time after school since we were getting ready for today's meet. So after getting home last night, I just laid in bed. I decided if I wasn't asleep by 11:00 I would get up and run instead of doing it super early. So I came and got on the treadmill and got going. Time actually went pretty well. Warmed up for 4 and then got into TM at 5:52 for 9 miles - they felt okay, I was just a little tired. Then cooled for just two, so I could get to bed. But then I actually went out and went swimming for a few minutes at 1:00. (Stratus grey 253.1) Week had its ups and downs - still having times when running is just meaningless. Busy, but got my workouts in. Goals for next week: Hit about the same mileage and keep focused on getting at least my big workouts in and long run.

AM - Big Workout #12 8x1000 CV - 15 treadmill. Woke up today - that's a step in the right direction. Warmed up for 3 then 1TM in Five Fingers, switched shoes to old Ohanas and ran the other Tinman at 5:52 - felt a bit winded during these, worried me a little. Got into the 1000's at 5:15 pace, 5:13 pace, 5:10 pace, 5:07 pace (2 each, with 2 minute recovery). Was not very on this morning. Not really tired or anything, just didn't run very strong. Cooled down for just over 3. (Five Fingers 53.1)(old Ohana -11)

Ran 4 on the ball fields barefoot, including 8xbarefoot striders. Step on a bee and got stung right on my arch - hurt a lot. Then took water out to the kids and ran a few with them. | | AM - 12 DI/2xAC/laps. Haven't ran with Molly for a few days as I try to figure out a decent schedule to run and still get everything in, so I took her right off the bat this morning and then went over and ran for practice. Hip felt pretty good again; much better than yesterday afternoon. Only run today with a meet this afternoon. (Triumph 215.85) |

AM - Big Workout #11. 2-1-2-1-2 miles LT. 16 treadmill. Molly's Mile and then 4 more on the treadmill in the Five Fingers. Did the workout with the 2 miles at 5:27 and the 1 miles at 5:24 with 2 minutes recovery between. Pretty hard workout. I was really spent by the end and my legs wanted no more of it. Cooled down for a couple miles in the Frees and was done. (Five Fingers 58.1)(old Ohana -9)(Free 11) afternoon - 3 Green Springs. Took water up to the top of Green Springs for practice (110 today) and ran a fwe miles with the kids. (Cumulus white 725.85)

(Stratus black 440.15) afternoon - 4.5 AC ice cream run. 8xbarefoot striders and then over to AC for an ice cream run. We couldn't have done much more, it was 112 degrees. | | AM - 21.5 Quail. One of those super-early mornings, to get the run in before a meet. Temps were still above 90 at 3am, but did finally cool off by Harrisburg with a little breeze off the mountain. Ran okay, put a little pickup in to 6:30-45 for a few miles and down the hill (.75 miles) at 5:15-30 to work on some quicker downhill at the end of a long run. Extended through Coral Canyon and my neighborhood, then ran Molly's Mile. Hip didn't have one ounce of pain. (Landreth orange 413.7) Another strongish week. I think my marathon speed is finally starting to come around, but it is going to take the full cycle up until SGM to be fully prepared. Goals for next week: next week should actually be a bit of a breather compared to this week (two meets, back-to-school night for the girls and for me, first full week of school, and workouts), so I think I'll just keep on trucking along - hit a couple good Big Workouts and a long run probably on Friday morning.

AM - Big Workout #10 7MP - 16 Buena Vista/Treadmill. Started off warming up with the Buena Vista loop and Molly's Mile and one more on the treadmill. Then ran the 7 miles at 5:33. Really felt pretty comfortable with just a little effort. Cooled for 2 more. (Stratus grey 269.1)
afternoon - 5.5 Grass/DI. Ran a few on the grass and then DI. Hip felt decent today, just a few kinks. (Barefoot '09 146.15)(Landreth 945.9)

AM - 10 ACx2/laps. Molly's Mile, then over to school and Hart's and a couple AC runs with some laps. I thought the hip might be in some major trouble today - was having a swimming race with Rylee and I felt a huge pop right where it has been hurting and a major shot of pain - but it felt about like the first of last week, some soreness nothing major. (Stratus black 450.15)
afternoon - 5 DI/Dogpound. Ran out with the Level 2 guys/girls as they did their AT. Hip didn't have much pain, just a general ache and weakness. (Landreth black 724.85)

afternoon - 10 grass/Lava Point. Ran a bit barefoot on the grass and then took water out to the team and ran with them for a bit down by the river on the trail. Hip still weak and achy. (Barefoot '09 148.65)(Landreth blue 54.7)

AM - Big Workout #9 10x2 min CV/3 TM - treadmill. Warmed up for 6 in the Five Fingers with no pain in the hip. Then got into the 2 minute fartleks. This isn't too bad a workout; each repeat is over before you realize it, even with only 1 minute recovery. Enjoyed watching my final recording of the World Championships (5000, 800, women's marathon and 1500, 4x400's - all good races). Had the pace at 5:10's for the first 8, then 5:07, and 5:05. Then hit 3 miles at Tinman (5:52 for 2, ending with a 5:47). Cooled down for 1 with Molly. (old Ohanas -9)(Five Fingers 64.1)
afternoon - 5 Shoe Run. The workers kind of got mad at us (and apparently even called the cops on us - but they caught the next group of boys behind us... sorry guys!), but we worked our way through the construction and then took a swim in the pond. Pretty hot out. (Cumulus gold 442.3)

AM - 22.5 Fields/Harts/2xAC/laps. Up and at 'em early to get in the long run this week. I just tied it in with practice this morning, so I ran the fields loop from school and threw in some quicker miles from 11-14. Then ran AC a couple times to finish it up. Have been really working on figuring out my hydration this past month. I think I have developed a pretty good rotation. Hip only hurt for about 50 meters when I picked up the pace at first, but nothing else throughout the whole run. (Triumph 238.3)
afternoon - 4.5 Starbucks. Easy run out to Starbucks. Plenty hot. (Five Fingers 68.6)

| | AM - 10 Middleton. Just a nice easy ten before the big race. Molly's Mile. Hip feeling great. A very good run. (Landreth orange 423.7)
A good solid week. The workouts weren't bad and got some solid mileage in (first 100+ in a couple months I think). Goals for next week: Things should look about the same, don't go over 110 miles. Keep taking care of hip, so it keeps feeling better.

AM - Big Workout #8 4/3/2/1 miles MP - 16 treadmill. Another early morning. Molly's Mile then treadmill for the rest. Warmed up with 4 in Five Fingers then switched to Old Ohanas for the workout. 5:33 pace for first 3 sets then 5:30 pace on the last mile - 2 min recovery. The pace is feeling right on, not hard but working it good. The workout just gets tough at the end because of the first two sets are so long. Absolutely no hip pain this morning; now if that can just translate to the afternoon too - then I know things are getting a lot better. We are closing it on it! (Old Ohana -14)(Five Fingers 72.6)
afternoon - 2 DI. Just hit the cooldown with the boys. No hip pain! (Cumulus white 729.85)

AM - 9 DI/2xAC/laps. A pretty good morning. A little twinge in the hip this morning, but not much at all. Runs are feeling pretty good right now. (Landreth blue 63.7)
afternoon 10 grass/River Trail. Ran 3.5 on the grass barefoot, including 8xbarefoot striders. A little bit of an ache until I got warmed up (obviously the day after a hard workout really sees the hip acting up). Then down to the trail to run with the girls on their AT run. AM - Big Workout #7 6xmile LT - 16 Buena Vista/Treadmill. Warmed up with the 5 mile Buena Vista loop. Then hit 2 TM on the treadmill. Had a little trouble getting into those and it worried me for the workout, but once I finally got focused it was fine. First 4 miles were at 5:27, with the final two at 5:24. Pace was strong and a little tiring, but not hideous and that makes me feel good. Jogged for 1 /2 minutes between each for recovery. Again, hip felt solid (I know I am not out of the woods with it yet, so it still scares me a little). (Cumulus gold 447.3)(Old Ohanas -11)
afternoon - 5 Washington. Ran into Washington and hit Sandberg's Pond with the boys. (Free 22.5)

AM - 23.5 SGM course. Had a good group run down the course from the starting line. Kept it pretty easy and relaxed most of the run and just enjoyed the cooler weather. Then pushed the last 4-5 miles through the twist. That actually felt better getting the legs moving than the slugging along with tight and sore legs. Hip felt really good still. (Stratus grey 292.6)
evening - 2 Provo River Trail. Just a short shake-out of the legs once we got to the hotel. (Landreth black 726.85)

| | AM - 10 Provo Canyon. Ran with Greg and Logan from the hotel up into the canyon a little. Hip felt really good. Glad I didn't have to run long or push today, though. (Landreth black 736.85) Not a bad week at all. Felt some real progress on the hip and hit two tough workouts feeling pretty strong. Goals for next week: As always, the major one is to make it through it. Just one tougher workout this week and then I would like to run the course one last time on Saturday and try a 10 (or so) mile time trial. Also, keep progressing on the hip.

AM - Big Workout #6 10 mile Progressive - 16 Washington Loop/Treadmill. Not a very good run this morning. Legs are really still wiped out. I've got to ice bath tonight. Warmed up with 4.5 on the Washington Loop, then ran 10 progressive with 2.5 at each brisk(6:15), Tinman(5:52), MP(5:33), LT(5:24). Finished with 1.5 cool down. Just not a very good run for me today. (Stratus grey 208.6)
afternoon - 5 Starbucks. Hip was all sorts of painful throughout the day and this afternoon. Finally started to warm up by the end of the run and had a good set of 8xbarefoot striders. (Triumph 261.3)(barefoot '09 153.15)

| | AM - 23 SGM Course. Got a whole 2 hours of sleep in between getting home from Murray and having to wake up to meet up to run. Although I was drained and just spent for the run it was worth it because the win was big for us and is going to propel us to more important goals. Large group this morning and the time went by quick. Didn't think I would have much in me for a tempo toward the end, but I tried. I was right, not much there. Did hit Winchester hard and the final 2 miles at race pace. Other than that, kept most of the last ten between 6:00 and 7:00. (landreth orange 465.7)
Week wasn't as good as last week, but still accomplished some things and had good mileage. Goals for next week: mileage will start coming down now (100'ish - not more). Sharpen up a little as mileage drops. Parent-Teachers though this week and two big meets keep things very busy.

AM - Big Workout #5 7MP - 16 Green Springs/Treadmill. Warmed up with 7 out into Green Springs. Then came back and got on the treadmill. Not a good run today. The legs didn't want to respond to anything and the mind is just as tired still. Made it through it, but not really. Not too big a deal though. In fact, this is when the body should be spent; mileage is coming down this week and things should start to sharpen up now. (Triumph 277.3)

| | Felt super tired, sluggish and kind of sick this morning; so I just took it off. No need to push myself into complete exhaustion. I'll do whatever this afternoon. afternoon - Big Workout #4 (attempted) 8x1000's - 14 grass/PVHS course. Went out to the grass to run for a little before practice. Warmed up with 3 and felt better than this morning, so I figured I might try the workout. The Tinman pace was nice and felt good barefoot. Then the first 1000 wasn't bad at all, but just starting the second, my stomach went crazy and started twisting. So I finished it up and decided to call it quits (kind of like my feelings this morning - I don't know what good I would do myself feeling sick and killing it). So I just went back to running. For practice we ran the home course to be ready for the meet on Tues. and striders (which I tried one and again just about lost it, so I stopped). (Barefoot '09 164.15) (Free 37.5)

| | AM - 11 Sandy. After very little sleep for some reason, ran from the hotel down into Draper on the paved trail. Picked it up a little to negative split easily on the way back. (Triumph 288.3) Week was pretty worn out. Legs were crap all week long. I'm trying not to freak out about it though, hoping it is part of the normal training cycle. Goals for next week: Mileage will be between 75-80. Let the legs freshen up a bit.

| | AM - Big Workout #3 4x4min CV - 14 Green Springs/Treadmill. Warmed up with 8.25 into Green Springs and on Molly's Mile. Then finished with .75 on treadmill before the workout. Felt much stronger than last week and could tell things were going to go well. Workout wasn't bad at all. Ran the first three at 5:15 for three minutes and the last minute at 5:10; then the last one at 5:13 and 5:07. Nice to be able to go fast and feel good about it. Recovery was 2 minute jog in between. | | morning - 10 Boise River Trail. Great run from the hotel out and back on the river trail in Boise. Run average was 6:30. Things felt great, didn't push hard, just felt very good. Ran by the fallen firefighters memorial and stopped for a little - that brought back a flood of memories and emotions from my 10 years fighting fires. Trail was neat, Boise was very pretty and the temps were awesome; most people had gloves and long sleeves and I was cruising in shorties and shirtless! (Landreth blue 119.2) Finished the week feeling very refreshed. Haven't had too much time to dwell on the race, with so much going on with XC so that has been nice. Goals for next week: Race Week! Just keep healthy, get rest, and let it all click!

| | afternoon - Big Workout #1 2x1mile - 8 River Trail. Ran down to the trail and did my last hard workout. Really didn't feel very good at all (I think I've got the same crap that my team does). The wind was working very hard against me as well. When it let up, the pace was great, but I just didn't feel like fighting it very much. 1-5:37, 2-5:42 then easy jogged back up after trying to recover from being so hot (100+). | | AM - 5 AC/DI. Started my depletion with yesterday's run. I really don't like this day because I am so hungry; I try to eat whatever I can with low carbs, then I will start to load tonight. | Race: |
St. George Marathon (26.2 Miles) 02:47:54 | | St. George Marathon - Well what an up and down down race wise and emotionally for me. I really had a good feeling about things going into this. Even being sick this week, I just had this gut feeling that the race was going to rip. Workouts had been solid all summer; I was coming off crazy mileage in the spring; had enough time to turn that into great speed; the taper was awesome; had a huge personal motivation that I was using to drive me for the past couple months, and I was evening feeling quite a bit better waking up this morning. But I guess it just wasn't meant to be. The race went like this: Started off very well. 5:30 for the first mile. Had a great pack including JeffMc and Seth; the weather was great and I no signs of anything bad. Moving toward the end of mile 2, Seth took off after Ian (I figured it was only a matter of time), but Jeff and I were talking and just planning on working together throughout and making the best of it all. For the next 5 miles things were great. I really had not one bad thing going on through 7. My legs felt so good. My breathing was great. And mentally I felt strong. Then going up Veyo, just like that, it was all gone. My legs turned to bricks. Everything was gone. It seemed that everything that could hurt on my legs was; my hips, quads, calves, even a plantar like pain in my right foot. I tried to keep it cool and tell myself that the group had only gained about 15 meters on me up the hill and I would work on them through Dammeron. I tried a surge on top, but nothing. Tried again, again nothing. I gave it one more shot at about mile 10, and I knew that it was over. From there I just backed it way off. I thought, "What good does a brutal 2:35 or so experience get me? Nothing." So I basically just jogged it as I waited for James to catch up. If nothing else good was going to come of this, I was going to be able to help my brother get his goals. Before too long, about around the 1/2, people started coming by me - Greg, Sasha, Walter, many others - and it was kind of fun to give them some yells of encouragement. Really my mind was fine through here. It was, what it was! Saw some people through the crowds that understood when it's not your day it's not and they gave shout outs of encouragement. Coming up on 19, I really backed off and stopped at my ward's aide station there and chatted and waited for James. Before too long I saw him cresting the Winchester Hill, so I started up again and got him up to me. He said he was struggling, but he actually looked decent. But as we started the drop, I could tell his legs were hammered as he couldn't use the hill at all. It was a lot of fun working with him, encouraging him, even giving a little yell here-and-there to keep him going. And he totally responded as we pushed through those last few brutal miles when you are just so dead, to be at 2:47. I was really proud of him and glad that I could help a little. It was fun seeing a lot of other people do really well and hit some awesome goals, too.
At the same time, I am kind of having a hard time with it as well. You put so much time and effort into this. So much time and effort. The beastly early mornings. Pushing yourself so hard. Hours and hours; years and years. And for some reason it just doesn't work. I know that being sick had something to do with it, but... I think another reason I am kind of struggling with it is, that I am done. Marathons and I have a love-hate relationship. I love them; they hate me! I love running more than any other thing beside my family and my religion. Even the pain and torture are part of the pull. I love to race; always have. The rush, the speed, the feeling of just going all out and just driving the body to extremes that so few know just apeals to me in every way. But I decided that this is it - at least for competitive marathoning. I can't do it anymore. It has been too much on me. But I walk away with my head held high. I gave it my best shot... no one can ever say I didn't put my every ounce into it. I really am kind of sad about it (and I know that some will think, "Yeah, right? You'll be back."), but I've always wanted to be done with no regrets - and me... I have absolutely NO REGRETS. Every time I tried, I tried as hard as I could. And I tried every time.
So here I go moving on to the next challenge. Of course, there is no way I could leave running. The draw of the open road, whether it be paved, dirt, or trail, is much to much to my liking, so I just leave to move to the next... Watch out Ultra-world. Here I come! by the way (Ohana racers 189.35)

| | afternoon - 8 Fire Station desert/Green Springs. Ran with the boys as we went up into the desert and connected to the top of Green Springs and back. A little sore in the calves, lungs still a little blocked off. (Cumulus gold 455.3) |
|
| |
morning - 9 City Wells. Ran up to the wells this morning - had to cross under the freeway, since they are once again ripping up the desert above my house to make more roads and eventually houses (makes me sick). Run was great, very pretty sunrise and beautiful running. Molly's Mile. (Triumph 305.3)
Pretty decent recovery week. I think the tiredness from being sick has been worse than the soreness in the legs. Goals for next week: I may have a few zeroes next week; a busy one with the region meets. Then Al and I are headed to Denver.
|
|
| | afternoon - 3.25 Little Valley. Not much of a run today - and it will probably be this way all week. Went to set up region course at Little Valley and ran around a bit. Then Molly's Mile. (Five Fingers 170.9) |
| |
| | I don't think I ran this day - but maybe... that's what happens when you don't update everyday. |
| | Went to Denver for our 10th anniversary a couple weeks ago - I took the weekend off. |
| | evening - 2.5 SLC South Towne Mall. Easy run to work out the kinks with the team. (Triumph 307.8) |
|
| | morning - 8 Draper Trail. Pretty sore and kinky. Can tell I haven't run in awhile. (Triumph 315.8) |
|
| | afternoon - 6.3 Trail to Nowhere. Ran the trail with the boys who are headed to Phoenix and then took Molly around. She hadn't been out in awhile and was pretty antsy. (Landreth blue 130) |
Landreth Blue Miles: 6.30 |
|
| | afternoon - 6.2 Middleton Tunnel. Fun little run through the tunnel and then Molly's Mile. Legs have been slowly working out the junk. Spending a lot of time with core stuff lately. (Cumulus gold 461.5) |
|
| | noon - 9 City Wells. Ran Molly's Mile then up to the wells. It needs to rain, the trails are getting very dry and sandy. (Landreth 954.9) Week was okay. I need to get going a little more.
|
|
| | AM - 3 Treadmill. Up and at 'em this morning. Nothing big, but a start. (Five Fingers 81.85)
afternoon - 9.25 Parkway (out and back). Michigan Workout - warmup, 1mile-5K, 1.5-10K, 3/4-5K, 1.5-10K, .5-5K, 1.5-10K, 400 meters all out, cool. It was pretty hard. But I held in there okay for not having done anything for awhile. Look forward to sticking it a bit better next time. (Stratus grey 335.85)
|
Stratus Grey Miles: 8.25 | Five Fingers Miles: 3.00 |
|
| | AM - 7 2xAC and laps. A bit cool out this morning. (Landreth black 755.85) afternoon - 7 Foremaster. Ran on my own on Foremaster since the team was supposed to be playing the wrestlers in ultimate. Molly's Mile. (Stratus bee 768.45)
|
Landreth Black Miles: 7.00 | Stratus Bee Miles: 7.00 |
|
| | AM - 7 2xAC and laps. Hips starting to act up - especially left one that gave me trouble through the summer. (Landreth blue 137)
afternoon - 10 GS/PL/Midd. Out in the desert with the team. Legs are really spent from Monday still. Molly's Mile. (Triumph 325.85)
|
Triumph Miles: 10.00 | Landreth Blue Miles: 7.00 |
|
| | AM - 7 2xAC and laps. Same old. Hip felt a bit better this morning after icing down, rolling, and massaging the last couple days. (Cumulus white 747.35) evening - 8.5 Bloomington Loop. Molly's Mile and then went over to club run and Clyde and I ran the Bloomington Loop at a pretty quick pace. Legs felt the best they have in weeks. (Stratus black 503.2)
|
Cumulus White Miles: 7.00 | Stratus Black Miles: 8.50 |
| |
| |
AM - 7 2xAC/laps. Another chilly one out this morning. Legs/hip a little more sore than yesterday, but still better than earlier in the week. (Free 44.5)
afternoon - 7.65 Sunrise. Went over as a team and ran 5xSunrise hills. I was really wiped out. Each hill hit me like a brick wall - in a way very similar to how I felt going up Veyo this year. Obviously a weakness that needs to be addressed. Molly's Mile. Don't remember the shoes I wore this run (need to be updating daily!)
|
| |
| | morning - 12 Zen. Ran Zen Trail over by Green Valley Loop with Clyde, Paul, and Logan. Had a fun time chatting and hitting a neat trail that I'd never been on. Molly's Mile. (Landreth orange 493.2) |
Landreth Orange Miles: 12.00 |
|
| | AM - 4 Treadmill. Hit an easy four on the treadmill in the five fingers. (Five Fingers 85.85) afternoon - 9.2 6x1000's. Good set of 1000's today. Warmed up and cooled down with DI. Ran the 1000's on the grass and dirt around PV. Hit a 5:15 pace on pretty much every one (with the 3rd about 6 seconds quicker for some reason). Hadn't done this type of workout for awhile, so I was pleased with the results, but it worked me. Molly's Mile. (old ohanas -9.2)
|
|
| | AM - 7.5 AC/laps/2450. Ran the same old this morning. Felt pretty good. I thought the fatigue from yesterday would set in. It will this afternoon. (Stratus bee 785.9) afternoon - 4.5 Library. Ran from PVHS to library and back to vote before Parent-Teachers. Got to love 'em. Soreness and fatigue was there this afternoon! (Free 49)
|
Stratus Bee Miles: 7.50 | Free Miles: 4.50 |
| |
| | AM - 6.5 AC/2450. Still a bit tight from the other day, but working its way out. (Triumph 431.3) afternoon - 7 grass. 6 miles barefoot and then 8xstriders. Hadn't done barefoot or striders for a while, and I felt like an old man for both. Then I lifted for the first time in many months - trying to really strengthen up my hips (especially the left that has been giving me so many problems) - kept it very light and with just two reps. Left hammy really tightened up - maybe that is related to the problems with the hip? (barefoot '09 174.65)
|
Triumph Miles: 6.50 | Barefoot '09 Miles: 7.00 |
|
| |
AM - 7 2xAC/laps. Really worked the left hammy over on the roller last night to work out whatever is going on there. Also popped a few ib's this morning to try and get some pain relief. Hip also woke me up a few times last night. Run was a bit tender at first but not too much of a problem. (Landreth orange 500.2)
evening - 10.05 Club. Ran up DC trail then across to Bloom. Hills and then down trail and back. Molly's Mile. Hammy felt okay. Worked over a bit before going and after. Icing and rolling a lot. (Stratus black 512.95)

PV Autumn XC Festival (3.1 Miles) 00:17:04, Place overall: 5
AM - 7 2xAC/laps. Temps were awesome this morning. Legs feeling? okay... (Cumulus white 754)
PV Autumn XC Festival afternoon 10 PVHS. Set up the course and ran around for a warm up. Then ran DI warm up with the kids. Figured that if I was around 17 I would be pretty happy with the run. Course is a pretty tough one and a full 5K. Started out moderate and a bit behind all my top boys. Within the first 3/4 mile I had moved up to 5 (behind my top 4) where I would stay the rest of the race. Pulled even with Tyson a couple times, but need to really work on speed and hammering out the pace to be able to hold with those top boys. Miles were like 5:15, 5:32, 5:40, and 5:30 pace finish. Felt fine about it. Next one, before Christmas, I would like to knock off 30 seconds. Cooled down cleaning up the course and around the school. Molly's Mile. (old ohana -7.8)(Free 51.2)
|
Cumulus White Miles: 7.00 | Free Miles: 2.20 |
| |
| | evening - 10 CC/Rock Canyon. Molly's Mile. Went out to Coral Canyon via Grapevine and over the top. Then connected down into Rock Canyon watching an awesome sunset. Took it nice and easy, plus I was pretty tired from a long day in the yard. But running in the evenings is perfect right now. Hammy didn't bug at all. (Stratus grey 345.85) |
Stratus Grey Miles: 10.00 |
| |
| | AM - 5 Treadmill. 5 pretty tired miles on the treadmill. (Five Fingers 90.85) afternoon - 10.5 XC ladder. DI warmup and cool. Ran a 600, 800, 1000, 1200 ladder up and down with the boys today. Felt a little week at first - in the 600 and 800 and then just got stronger. Each repeat coming down was better than that going up. Molly's Mile. (old ohanas -10.5)
|
| |
| |
AM - 7 2xAC/laps. Didn't feel to bad after yesterday's hard workout. We'll see how I feel this afternoon. (Free 58.2)
afternoon - 9 Fields. Ran down into the fields - to Corey's house. Didn't feel as worn out as I thought I might. Molly's Mile. (Triumph 341.3) Weights - did 3 sets of the same low weight as last time. Hammies started to tighten up a little on the last set of squats (like last time), but not nearly as bad; and they stretched out good after.

AM - 7 2xAC/laps. The usual this morning. It was so tough to get up this morning. Hip still giving me quite a bit of grief. (Stratus black 519.95)
afternoon - 7.25 hills. Ran over and ran grass hills by the middle school - I'll call them waves; it is two 30 meter fairly steep hills. Ran 6 continuous sets of them. 8xbarefoot striders. Hills are where my lack of leg strength really comes out. Molly's Mile. (Stratus grey 353.1)
|
Stratus Black Miles: 7.00 | Stratus Grey Miles: 7.25 |

AM - 7 2xAC/laps. The usual this morning. Warm today. Got new shoes, a pair of Triumph 7's. Felt okay - a lot like my other Triumphs (hurt feet at first, but have become good shoes). Hoping that if I run in new shoes more, my hips can get feeling better (right hip has started acting up as well as the pain in the left). (Triumph silver 7)
afternoon - 7 Washington. Ran 6 into Washington and back and then Molly's Mile. (Landreth orange 507.2)
|
Landreth Orange Miles: 7.00 | Triumph Silver Miles: 7.00 |

AM - 7 2xAC/laps. Rained throughout the night and during the run this morning! Hips also felt just a little better. (Triumph silver 14)
afternoon - 7 Shoe Run. Went out on the Shoe Run with a big group of kids. Jumped into Sandberg's and it was cold! Finished with 4x200's. Legs could use a little more of that. Weights (easy and 3 sets - no arms, with rotator cuff injury causing big issues right now) and Molly's Mile. (Landreth blue 144)

Landreth Blue Miles: 7.00 | Triumph Silver Miles: 7.00 |

| | morning - 17.65 Desert Tour. Had a great club run into the desert above my house. Ran up to Maverick to meet everyone. Then we crossed the under the freeway at Grapevine and headed out on Church Rocks/Prospector (with a little lost detour). We then headed up Cottonwood Hills (hadn't ever taken that trail - very cool in the wet sand). This trail somehow connected to the top section of Bracken's Loop - hadn't ever seen that connection before. Then we got up to City Wells and down and under the freeway at the Trailhead (where Clyde lost his shoe in the mud! So funny!). Finished by running home and Molly's Mile. Hips felt a little better again, but still not great. (Triumph silver 31.65) Good week. Goals for next week: Keep working on the health of the hips (and now shoulder). Enjoy our team trip to Phoenix and have the kids run well down there.
|
Triumph Silver Miles: 17.65 |

| |
AM - 5 Treadmill. Thought about getting up earlier to get a few more in today, but then realized that my hips hadn't hurt during the night and that I shouldn't push too hard. After all, this would be a good week to let them heal up a bit more. So I enjoyed another half-hour and got the regular Monday 5 on the treadmill. (Five Fingers 95.85)
afternoon - 11 grass/6-12. Went out to practice early and got 3.25 on the grass. Then we DI warmed and cooled around a 600,800,1000,1200. Kids did well, but I was a bit off on all of them. Molly and I went up into the dirt and ran a little more than usual (2 miles) to round my total up to 12. Weights - upped the weight just a little, but no arms with my shoulder being so jacked. Hips are feeling even better. (Barefoot '09 177.9)(old Ohanas -8.75)

AM - 7 2xAC/laps. A bit chilly out this morning. Hips still improving! (Triumph silver 38.65)
afternoon - 6 Wave Hills. 4 Sets of Wave Hills. Pretty slow on the hills. I used to be strong at hills, what's the deal. Molly's Desert Run. (Stratus black 525.95)
|
Stratus Black Miles: 6.00 | Triumph Silver Miles: 7.00 |
|
| | AM - 7 AC/laps/2450. It is nice not to have the aches and pains for those first few warm up miles, as my hips are continuing to improve. (Triumph silver 45.65) afternoon - 8 Dog Pound. Ran 3 barefoot. Then dog pound. Ended with Molly's Mile. (barefoot '09 180.9)(Free 63.2)

AM - 7 2xAC/laps. All the stuff (new shoes, icing, yoga, rolling) seem to be paying off for the hip. Still improving. Last AC for the season, probably. (Triumph silver 52.65)
afternoon - 6 Green Springs. Real easy run up to Green Springs. 8xbarefoot striders. Weights. Molly's Desert Run. (Landreth blue 149)(Barefoot '09 181.9)
|
Barefoot '09 Miles: 1.00 | Landreth Blue Miles: 5.00 | Triumph Silver Miles: 7.00 |

| | afternoon - 4 Tempe. Just ran the Nike X SW course down here in Tempe with the boys. Should be a fun, hard race. (Triumph silver 56.65) |
Triumph Silver Miles: 4.00 |
|
| | morning - 3 Tempe. Usually I don't count the miles I run around watching the races, but today I was all over and it was my only running - so I am counting it. (Stratus blue) Week was fine. Obviously mileage was week at the end, but that's okay - we had a fun trip, and it was a good experience for the boys. Goals for next week: Enjoy the Thanksgiving season!
|
| | afternoon - 9.5 4xSunrise. Went over and ran Sunrise Hills. Kind of an interesting set. Some good, some bad. 1-1:57, 2-1:50 (went strong with Finchy), 3-1:55 (by myself now), 4-2:04 (decided to try one more and I didn't really attack it like I should have). Then ran home via Foremaster and Trail to Nowhere. Molly's Mile. (Triumph silver 66.15) |
Triumph Silver Miles: 9.50 |
| |
| | afternoon - 9 River Run. A little flat this week. But hips are feeling so much better and shoulder has really improved as well. Weights and then Molly's Mile. (Landreth blue 158) |
Landreth Blue Miles: 9.00 |
|
| | Should have gotten up this morning, but I didn't. Then I didn't feel like running when we got to SLC. |
| |
morning - 10 SLC. Took Molly for 1.5 miles around the neighborhood. Then went on to the frozen and snowy trails at Dimple Dell. Really enjoyed the run around the trails even though I was a little achy (I think from not running yesterday, or much this week) and my hips hurt a little too. (Triumph silver 76.15)
evening - 5 SLC. Sego Lily loop. Hips hurt at the start of the run for the first time in about a week. It quickly went away, but I did not enjoy it. Most of the run was just a battle to keep the big dinner down. (Triumph silver 81.15)
|
Triumph Silver Miles: 15.00 |
| |
| |
morning - 10 SLC. Went out on the same run as yesterday - Molly around 1.5 and then the trails at Dimple Dell. I really enjoy running up there. Really, it is the only place I enjoy running up here. Hips felt the same as last night; aching at first and then mostly better, but weak. (Triumph silver 91.15)
afternoon - 5 SLC. Ran Sego Lily, but in reverse. Hips are digressing I think, but I don't know why. I hate to complain about them, but... Run was much easier this direction - funny how that works, with the placement of the hills and all. (Triumph silver 96.15)
|
Triumph Silver Miles: 15.00 |
|
| | morning - 16 SLC. Took Molly around then went over to Dimple Dell again. Ran the rest of the run all over the trails down by Dry Creek. Mostly they were covered with snow and frozen and it was tough running, but very cool. A lot of fun single tracks and tough climbs. (Triumph silver 112.15) Week was okay, wish I wouldn't had been lazy on Weds. Oh well. Goals for next week: Get some improvement back in my hips. Wake up mornings and get 5-7 in.
|
Triumph Silver Miles: 16.00 |
| |
| | afternoon - 12.5 Grass/Shinob Kibe Roller Coaster. Ran 3 barefoot before practice. Then we went out to the roller coaster. Finished up with Molly's Desert Run and a little more with Molly and Laney. Hips felt a bit better. (Barefoot '09 184.9)(Landreth blue 167.5) |
Barefoot '09 Miles: 3.00 | Landreth Blue Miles: 9.50 |

AM - 5 Buena Vista Loop. Finally got out of bed. Ran into the Bull. (Free 68.2)
afternoon - 9 PV. Ran around the area of 2450 Park trying to get a course mapped out for the fundraiser race on Dec. 19. The kids decided they want to host a race and put all the proceeds to a family in need from the area - pretty cool... good kids. Then did 8xbarefoot striders, weights, and Molly's Mile. (Triumph 348.3)(Barefoot '09 185.9)(Five Fingers 96.85)

AM - 5 Buena Vista. Same run as yesterday. Felt a little better than yesterday (especially afternoon when I was so wiped out). (Cumulus white 759.35) afternoon - 7 Green Springs. Easy run up to Green Springs with team. Then Molly's Mile with Laney as usual. (Stratus black 531.95)(Five Fingers 97.85)

AM - 5.5 Parkway. Went out to run Warm Springs, but found that the Parkway was finished being paved, so I jumped on it. It is a nice road, but I just wish it was still dirt. Let the conquering of the desert continue... (Landreth 960.4)
evening - 11 Club. Molly's Mile. Club run up River Trail from DC. Good to get out with the group again. (Five Fingers 98.85)(Stratus grey 363.1)

Landreth Miles: 5.50 | Stratus Grey Miles: 10.00 | Five Fingers Miles: 1.00 |

| | afternoon - 15 Grass/GS/PL/Midd. Ran 4 on the grass and 8xbarefoot striders. Then up into the desert with a good group. Legs were pretty trashed and made me worried for tomorrow. Then finished with Molly's Mile. Tried to lift, but something was burning in the weight room, so we evacuated the school and went home. (Barefoot '09 190.9)(Five Fingers 99.85)(Landreth orange 516.2) |

Expedition Relay (50 Miles) 04:48:03, Place overall: 1
Ran this relay with Bill, James, Logan and Hayden. Had sworn that I wouldn't do another relay, but this was pretty fun. First leg was 7.3 down from Snow Canyon to the Bluff/Parkway corner. A good drop, but since it was on the trail, it also had some tough climbs. The hardest part were the killer drops though - so steep that it hurt my legs a lot. Ran it pretty quick (went through 10K in about 33:30). Cooled down a little and went on with the race. The second leg was from the end of the Industrial Park down the new road to the Southern Corridor Freeway and along it to Sun River. Ended up being just over 6 miles. I didn't think things were going to work out as I warmed up. My hip had tightened up so bad that I could barely walk. But it slowly warmed up and allowed me to run, but it was a struggle. Things were pretty much around 6 minute pace the whole way (give or take a little). We easily won as a team and it was a good time. (Cumulus gold 463.5)(Ohana 204.85) Saw some improvements in the hip and some set backs this week. I'll just keep working on it and try to keep it getting better. Goals for next week: Get up a few days/sleep a few days. Keep mileage moderate. Train hard a little and see how it feels.
|
Ohana Racers Miles: 15.50 | Cumulus Gold Miles: 2.00 |

AM - 5 Treadmill. 5 easy on the treadmill this morning. Worked out a little of the pounding my legs took on Saturday. (Five Fingers 104.85)
afternoon - 10 Sunrise Hills. Team went out and did hills. All those that did them did really well. I hit 5. Legs felt a little stronger at first, but like the last few times, I struggled on the last half. Molly's Mile in the cold and sleet. (Triumph 358.3)
|
Triumph Miles: 10.00 | Five Fingers Miles: 5.00 |

| | afternoon - 11 Fields. Took most of those still running out into the fields and groups cut off at a variety of places. We went 9. 8xbarefoot striders. Weights. Molly's Mile. (Landreth blue 177.5)(Barefoot '09 191.9) |

AM - 5 Parkway. Had to get up in the cold (20 degrees) this morning since I used a sleep in day yesterday (I figure 3 morning runs a week keeps me moving without overdoing it right now). Hips have been feeling a little better this week. (Free 73.2) afternoon - 10 Town. Ran into St. George and around for a little different direction than usual. Mike and Wes - two Freshman - ran their first 10 with us and did very well. Molly's Mile. (Stratus grey 374.1)

Stratus Grey Miles: 11.00 | Free Miles: 5.00 |

AM - 5 Buena Vista. The big chill is on. Hips holding in there. (Free 78.2)
evening - 9 Club run. Head out down the trail and then went over to Bloomington Hills to check out some Christmas lights. This house was absolutely amazing - I can't imagine how long it took to put them all up. (Triumph silver 121.15)

Free Miles: 5.00 | Triumph Silver Miles: 9.00 |
|
| | afternoon - 11 River Trail. Ran down on to the trail. Got home and took Molly on her Desert Run for 2 miles. (Landreth black 766.85) |
Landreth Black Miles: 11.00 |
|
| | morning - 20.25 Utah Hill. Went out to Utah Hill and ran the desert loop out there (loop section twice) with Logan, Clyde, and Paul. The snow had laid a fresh blanket of cushioning that made the run very nice. By the end, however, I was ready to be done. It pretty much wiped me out. Hips held up pretty good. No real pain in either one, just some weakness. Still really struggling on hills. (Cumulus gold 483.75)
Week was pretty good again. Hips had improvement. Was able to rest a bit. Goals for next week: Have a good workout Monday and pretty much get the same as this week. Miles betwee 80 and 85, run three morning, and pull off this fundraiser race that the team is hosting without too many major flaws.
|
Cumulus Gold Miles: 20.25 |

AM - 5 Treadmill. Started easy like usual, but it seemed hard; so I turned it down even more and just trudged my way through. One good thing about the treadmill on a Monday is that I can jump off and stretch and get things moving easier that if I was out and about. (Five Fingers 109.85)
afternoon - 9 Michigan. Ran a controlled Michigan today with some of the boys. Our "5K" sections were 6:00 and our "10K" sections were 6:30. A solid workout. I am trying to teach them to run this workout correctly and together and that will greatly benefit our team in the future - but it is hard when half of them don't show up. Molly's Mile. (Triumph silver 130.15) Retired my Landreths and Stratus bees today. Giving them to the shoe drive we've got going on in school.

| | afternoon - 10 Albino Run. Went exploring and made up a new 8 miler up around Industrial Park and into the desert above the St. G. dogpound. 8xbarefoot striders. Molly's Mile. And weights. (Stratus black 539.95)(Barefoot '09 192.9)(Five Fingers 110.85) |
Stratus Black Miles: 8.00 | Barefoot '09 Miles: 1.00 | Five Fingers Miles: 1.00 |

| | afternoon - 17 Grass/Lava Point. Ran 5 barefoot then out to the river along the Lava Point trail for 10 more with the kids. Finished with 2 on Molly's Desert Run. A good run - especially in a week that my mileage is down since I haven't been getting up. (Triumph 370.3)(Barefoot '09 197.9) |
Triumph Miles: 12.00 | Barefoot '09 Miles: 5.00 |

AM - 5 Parkway. Finally got up. I don't know why I haven't been getting up, I just haven't. (Free 83.2)
afternoon - 10 Midd/PL/GS. Trail was very nice with the rains last week. Weights. Molly's Mile. (Landreth blue 187.5)

Landreth Blue Miles: 10.00 | Free Miles: 5.00 |

| | AM - 6 Run4Santa course. Ran the course backward and then marked it and did all that we needed to do to have the race. Got to run the 1/2 mile kids race with Pyper. Ry also ran and did good. And even Laney ran! Ran around a bit directing traffic and cleaning up. Race went well (we raised over $700 for needy families in our area, and well over 100 pair of shoes - when I total them up I update this - over the week), and next year we will even get more people out! (Landreth orange 522.2) Though about going out and getting something in later, but I went and got a bunch of stuff done in the yard instead - what a beautiful day.
Not a big end to the week. I figured it would be this way and that is why I needed to get up more this week. But I didn't. I did, however, make it through the semester at school and the hideous last day before break! Goals for next week: I am going to have some fun with running this week. I can sleep in, run out in the desert, get pretty good mileage in and really enjoy it. And of course, have a great Christmas with the family!

morning - 6 Treadmill. Al was out doing stuff, so I had to run this morning on the treadmill. Warmed up for a couple miles and then ran 3 around Tinman. Finished with Molly's Mile. (Five Fingers 113.85)(old Ohana -3)
afternoon - 11 Mustang Pass. A nice run up Mill Creek and on my favorite trail close to my house. Some deer had been up on the trail. (Landreth black 777.85)

| | mid-morning - 12 Sand Hill/Dino Tracks. Took Molly out for 1.75 and then up Mill Creek onto Sand Hill. The light rains made the sand great and broke down the horse tracks a bit. Started to sleet a bit up at the top. Then connected onto Dino Tracks and back home. Good trail running. (Landreth orange 534.2) |

| | morning - 5 Parkway. Easy 5 on the Parkway. Not too cold out, in fact wished I wouldn't have been so dolled up. (Free 88.2) afternoon - 12 Prospector. Molly's Desert Run; then out onto Prospector via Grapevine. The trail was great - another one of my favorites - but my legs seem so spent (just so flat for the last few months) and my hip has seem to have been taking a step back the last couple days. Kind of frustrating. (Triumph 382.3)

| | noon - 20 Ice House. Molly's Mile. Ran up the Ice House trail via Mill Creek and Power Line. Stayed on the Ice House instead of breaking off to Broken Mesa - hadn't ever gone this direction before. It was a good trail, but not often used. Took me up into the trees and into a little snow and a lot of mud. On the way back my hip started killing and I had to walk for a bit. At that point I thought about shutting it down for the year and just letting the hip heal. But then I started up again and there was no pain and just minor tightness/fatigue. (Landreth blue 207.5) |

| | Took the day off and had a fun Christmas. |
| | noon - 7 SLC. Took Molly for two miles and then ran Sego Lily. Didn't really want to go out today, but as usual, glad I did once I got going. Hip had minor pains for the first two, but then ended up feeling great. (Triumph silver 137.15)
Had a good week. Enjoyed the trails, but tired of fighting my hip. But I just can't bring myself to shut it down when it feels good. Goals for next week: just enjoy another one.

| | late-morning - 7 SLC. Took Molly out for a couple miles and then Sego Lily reverse. Very cold out, but you warm up a little as you go. Plan on keeping it very light this week to see if it helps the hip out. (Triumph silver 144.15) Finished up Again to Carthage this weekend. I like the book, and of course liked the running aspect. But I kept reading to get to the running; it needed more running. Good book, Once a Runner much better.

| | late-morning - 7 SLC. Did the same 7 as yesterday with Molly and then Sego Lily. Snowing pretty good throughout the run. Hip feeling moderate the last two days. (Triumph silver 151.15) |

| | afternoon - 7 Green Springs. Dropped off the Jeep for inspection (hooray, it passed!) and ran up to Green Springs and home and then added 8th Ward with Molly (1.75). Wore new Adidas Boston. They felt pretty good, light and quick - but wore on one toe a little. (Boston 7) |

afternoon - 7 Parkway. Ran Molly's Desert Run and then on the Parkway. Weather was nice and legs felt pretty decent. (Five Fingers 115.85)(Landreth blue 212.5) 2009 Year in Review: 4744.95. That's the number that sums up the year. In a way it had some negatives and some positives. Of course, that's how many miles I ran this year. Many of which were very fun, some in some very pretty places and on some runs that I will never forget and often with company that I really enjoyed. It is the biggest mileage that I have ever run - by a long way - 400'ish more than last year. I had some very big weeks... 150 miles; and some big months... 500+. Although I did have the lower ab pain and this hip that has just annoyed me for awhile, I have stayed pretty healthy. The miles helped me run and do well at Squaw (which is really my only high point racing this year), but they also cost me a little zip in my legs and kept me away from racing more, which is something I need to bring back. St. George was a bummer; but I won't say it was because of anything really other than being sick that week. It just took too much out of me to keep on the hammer, but something good came of it with being able to pace James in through his PR despite being spent. Another thing... it really made me reflect on my running and has caused me to think about which direction I want to take things in the next while. An up and down year; but in all reality, there were a lot of good things associated with running this year: fun runs, beautiful scenery, my team getting better and better and a lot of other things that I would never trade. 2010 Here I Come!
