morning - 11 Steve's toward Washington Dam and loop around through fields. A fun run with Steve and Mike. I am glad to get back into it. I figured I could come back from my break two ways: feeling refreshed and great, or feeling out of tune. I came back the latter. Legs felt like I was working to pick them up every step. Everything felt off from my toes to my head. But I enjoyed running. (Precision 206.25)
GOALS FOR 2008: After having a successful year in 2007, I am looking forward to building on it in 2008. Mileage: I would like to push up to 120 weeks in the summer. As a result, I think this will push my total mileage for the year up over 4000 to somewhere around 4200. Health Goals: This is a little vague and not the best way to set goals, but I would like to eat healthier. So I am not going to give in to any caff. soda and ... what the heck I'll say soda at all, let's see how it goes. Injuries: You can't really predict them, but you can help avoid them and take care of them when they happen. Keep myself as injury free as 2007. Enjoyment: Run on the trails! Run in the rain! Outrun bikes! Find a few tortoises! Really, really enjoy at least 2 runs per week. Racing: I have never set goals for a year, but here we go- 10K - Under 30 at Summer Games and 31 at an unaided 10K 1/2's - 3 minute PR which would put me at 1:07:06, so let's say under 1:07 marathon - SLC equal SGM time even with the harder course SGM top three finish with whatever time that takes - I am planning on it being sub 2:20, so there is the goal! Final goal is to decided on which course I am going to go for Trials qualifier on in a couple years and get plans made and set to run that race in 2009, so I am ready for 2010. |

afternoon - 12 River Trail. Solid run down and back the trail. Started with some of my runners and had a good run. Then they broke off and I just let it flow. Still felt a bit hurky-jerky, but the times weren't showing that as I hit most of the miles back up the run in low to mid 6's. Ave. 6:40. (Cumulus Silver 318.45)
|
| |
AM - 5.25 Washington Loop. Set the reasonable of getting back on track with my morning runs by going 5. Got chased by a scary rottweiler and decided to take a different road as to avoid getting eaten. (Cumulus red 439.7)
afternoon - weights 2 x sets as I was trying to get home quick to taxi the girls around (added to the fact that I hadn't lifted for a couple weeks), but then the Jeep wouldn't start anyway.
Evening - 10.7 Club run on the Parkway Trail and down into Green Valley. Good run with Steve. Pushed the pace up the hill back toward Sunset and on the trail to the store with some solid 6:20 uphill miles. Ave. was 6:40. (Stratus 200.45) |
| |
AM - 5 Washington Loop. Wasn't so sure if I would drag myself out of bed when that alarm went off, but I did. Temps were very mild; took off hat and gloves. (Cumulus Orange 424.45)
afternoon - 12 GS/PL/Middleton to PVHS then home. Run was pretty good. I was a bit tired and happy that I had decided only to run the 9 instead of the 10.5 or 12. Then I took a wrong turn and added a little - only .25 so no big deal, but then I had to run home from school when my Jeep wouldn't start again and that about spent me. (Precision 218.25)

morning - 20.5 Store to Painter's course and back. I was the club this morning as I either missed the message about a change or was the only one brave enough to dare go outside in the rain. As I got going, however, the rain was very minimal, and I stayed dry. Waited for about 10 minutes at the store and then decided to run down to the Painter's course (which I thought would be about 2.5, but was actually 3.5). Ran the course - including the outside of the road on the Bloomington Loop which is a real pain - and then back up to the store. Didn't have my Garmin, because I didn't want it getting ruined in the rain. So I didn't have exact numbers on pace or miles, but I went okay not taking it too hard. I was pretty worn down by the time I was coming back up Bluff - it was a long and tiring stretch. But it turned out to be the longest run I have done since SGM. I will now be getting back into 20+ milers to get ready for SLC, so it turned out okay. (Cumulus Silver 338.95)
Good week except for Monday. But by midweek, I was back going strong and had a couple good runs. Goals for next week: Get miles to 100 again. Keep getting mentally prepared to run a race again. Have a good set of mile repeats on Monday.

| |
AM - 7.15 GreenSprings. It is so easy to stay in bed, and so much harder to get out of bed, when you have let yourself fall into that - so I am struggling to break back through. Temps still pretty darn nice for January at 5:30 in the morning. (Cumulus red 446.85)
afternoon - 10.4 5xmiles on cemetery loop. Not the best set of repeats. I think I may move this workout to Tuesdays. I've noticed that I have often been lethargic and not to "in to it" on Monday's. A bit chilly and windy out which had some play on the run, but not as much as my tight legs and struggle to push. 1-5:30 not bad considering I felt way tight and the wind was holding me back on the downhill section where I usually gain some time. Family drove by during 1 minute recovery jog, so I welcomed the opportunity to stop and talk to them, but the longer break kind of threw me off. 2-5:31 Kept a decent effort on this - again the wind. 3-5:37 A big slip on time here, but most of it was caused by a Pit Bull that came out of a house after me (lucky he didn't eat me!) but I did stop to clap and yell at him and my watch kept going, so maybe about a 5 second loss. 4-5:42 Here's where it got ugly. From this point on the legs felt like the end of a race. 5-5:40 I thought about not running this one, but decided that wouldn't do me much good, so I gave it as strong a push as I could. Then finished by running around Washington a bit as a cool down. (Precision 228.65)
| |
| |
AM - 5 Washington Loop. I tried to stay in bed, but couldn't let myself. Kind of cooled off again last night. (Cumulus red 451.85) afternoon - 11.75 Shnobe Kibe. Started off with a few of the boys and as they went up Staheli's Hill, I extended around the mountain. Only got chased by a few dogs - some friendly, others foes. Back at PVHS I tried to start up the Jeep (it wouldn't), did my abs workout quickly as to not cool off too much and then ran the 2.75 home. (Stratus 212.2)
| |
| | afternoon - 14 River Trail into Bloomington Hills and back. Started off with Kimzey and Austin. Wind was blowing hard against us. Decided to take a detour off my normal route and extend a little. Couldn't loop around the 1/2 course because it still has a giant hole in the trail and tractors all around it, so I just made it an out and back. Nothing too quick as my hips still had a little soreness and weakness in it. (Cumulus silver 352.95) evening - 3 Treadmill @1%. Put the kids to bed and grabbed a few extra to try and work my kinks out a bit. Didn't really feel like going any more than this though. Now I'll just run once a day until the 1/2. (Cumulus orange 427.45) | |
| | evening - 10.8 Club run. The normal club run route is going to be the one we have done the last two/three weeks, up onto Parkway Trail, under to Ball Fields, down by Snow Canyon HS, then extended down to the Golf Course and back up toward Sunset and then on the trail back to the store. Today I doubled back looking for Steve, Allen, and Mike, but they headed out up Sunset. Good run with a enjoyably easy start with a good social hour and then some pickup in a few place toward 6:20-6:40 miles. (Cumulus Silver 363.75) | |
| | afternoon - 12.6 Junction and over top of Coral Canyon down Highland. Solid run. Did 4 x 100 barefoot grass striders on the Coral Canyon Elem. grass. The effort was good and for three miles down Highland and back toward home I really pushed it - using the hills I got 6:10, 5:27, 5:50. (Precision 241.25) |
| | morning - 1/2 course and extended up trail. Club run with a lot of people starting. Ran the first 7 with James and then by myself around the loop as Steve took off. I thought I was really poking 'cause he was pulling away so easy, but I still was hitting a few around 6:30. Then we took it pretty easy back up the trail. Finally Mike and I finished with a couple up the trail and back. (Stratus 229.4) | |
| | afternoon - 13.65 Bank run reverse and Nisson's. Ran the bank run a little before practice started to get a few extra miles in as this afternoon was going to be busy. Then as team warmed up, I kept going and added a few big loops. Then Ruth, Kimz, Austin and I ran Nisson's with a detour into the desert above the Fire Station and a lap around Sandberg's Pond to add a few more miles. Nice easy pace run into a little different area than usual. (Precision 254.3)
|
| | PM - 12 on Treadmill. Sick family meant heading home right after school so my wife could go to the doctor. Her and my youngest have strep. Eventually I was able to get my run in - on the treadmill so I could help out if needed. Turned on some tunes and a b-ball game and set off. Eventually I turned it up to 6:40 and started a climb, from 1%-5% for each mile and then back down, finishing with a 1% mile at 6:00 and a cooldowner at back at 6:40. It was a good workout, the best I have had on the treadmill in some time. (Cumulus orange 439.45) | |
| | afternoon - 9 Shnobe Kibe. Good run if I wouldn't have been frozen. Of all the days to forget a long sleeve shirt! The temps were in the low 30's, but the wind chill was a bit on the cold side. It was so windy that not only did it nearly blow me over running into it - literally - but going with it, I could feel it pushing me along with quite a force (I was hitting 6:00 with about a 7:30 effort). Then I woke to find half of my fence blown over, that will be a fun one to fix. (Cumulus silver 372.75) Planned on running about 5-6 more in the evening, but I was feeling pretty sick to my stomach, so I passed. | |
| | evening - 7.25 Club run, SCHS loop. For the most part took it pretty easy and tried to get ready to race. Hit 2 miles in the middle at 4:58 and 5:20. The hard pace really got me feeling and thinking about racing - and ready mentally. I think all should go well. I am in better shape than last year, and last year I was pretty sick for a week up to race day. All I can do is go run strong and set myself up for a good time. (Precision 261.55) | |
| |
afternoon - 8.5 Grapevine and to Highland Park for 4x75 barefoot grass striders and then another .6 barefoot on the grass. Then back home. Scared the big owl out of his tree out at Grapevine - pretty cool. Ready to go for tomorrow. (Stratus 237.3)

Painter's Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:10:38, Place overall: 4, Place in age division: 2
Got to the race and did a warmup of just over 2 miles in my Stratus and got ready to run. Wished Ally good luck on her 5K (30:50 5K PR!) and did a few run outs and got ready to go. Cool, but not really too bad. New the race would be tough with 2 Oly Trials Qualifiers (Logan and Nick M.), plus Sasha and a few others. But I planned on going out a solid, but not killer pace and hit a good solid time. Here's the race report:

Planned off taking off at a strong but relaxed pace – and this fit the plan perfectly.

Carefully crossed bridge, but should have warned Nick and Logan of the next one. Held pace pretty good up and through Bloomington Hills. Glen falls off around here I think.

Nick and Logan gap Sasha and I a little after their big falls – kind of scary, but in retrospect a very funny sight to see them both flying through the air parallel with the ground!

Sasha and I worked together to keep going on the miles down to Bloomington; I wanted to close back on Nick and Logan as they were only about 20 feet up on us for a while, but Sasha thought we should stay. Probably better in the long run, but now I’ll never know ‘cause I didn’t go with it. I think I should have, even if it only lasted for another mile or so.

Slowed a little climbing up onto the Bloom. Loop and Sasha pulled away. I told myself to keep him about 5-10 seconds ahead on the loop and then I would close it on the trail back.

An up an down mile. I would get strong mentally to go get Sasha and then I would only gain a step and so I would back off. Then I would say go for it and try again with about the same result. Distance was running out.

Actually 12.95 on my Garmin and most everybody hit a pretty similar distance. I decided to do one final push to Sasha around the hill and was really burning it up. Best pace for the mile shows 4:30 (although I may have only hit it for a little). I was pumping my arms so hard and breathing so heavy to try and dig something out of my legs that I kind of hyperventilated. Crossing the finish I just dropped to my knees. I couldn’t breathe and there was nothing there. I knew I should move, but couldn’t, and that made me more lightheaded and started to drop, but Ally ran over and Logan jumped in to help me.

Was very happy with how it all turned out - with only one regret! - But felt better pretty quickly after as I relaxed and went on a cool down (2 miles) with Logan. It was the first race of the year and I ran strong, kept my head in the race for the most part and ran 4 minutes faster than last year (on the same - short - course). A great way to start the year and it got me pretty pumped up to get going strong for SLC.
Great races everyone!

morning - 10 Grapevine Springs to Coral Canyon. Slow easy pace with a bit of fatigue in the legs, but no real soreness. Ran 4x100 barefoot grass striders and .4 or so more for a mile barefoot. (Cumulus silver 381.75)

AM - 5 Washington Loop. Need to get back into the morning running even though it is a recovery week. So I'll make myself get up and run 5's this week to kind of get going again, and then just run a little shorter (8-9) in the afternoon - to hit around 80 for the week. Then next week I'll go back to 100. Legs a little tender this morning. (Cumulus red 456.85) afternoon - 8 Washington Parkway. Ran with Kimz, Austin and Ruthie. They had to slow down for me on numerous occasions as apparently I am the only one in the world feeling any fatigue from the 1/2. (Precision 269.53)
| |
AM - 5 Washington Loop. Same old - a little bit cooler than yesterday. (Cumulus orange 444.45) afternoon - 8.4 Foremaster. Ran with the distance crew again at a nice easy pace. Trying to show the kids how to go hard and recover by example! I extended up and around the DI Loop and stopped at Sandstone to do 4x100 barefoot grass striders and 1 1/2 laps that came back as a mile barefoot. (Cumulus silver 389.15)
| |
AM - 5 Washington Loop. Ran into some neighborhood runners and ran/chatted with them for about a 1/2 mile than continued on my own with some flurries coming down. I thought it might actually turn into something, but it died down. (Cumulus red 466.85) evening - 7 Club Run. I was happy to go run with the club, but my enthusiasm for the run died out pretty quick because I really didn't feel like running. But I made it through it no big deal. I thin that it is mostly coming from my slow recovery. I kind of want to be out hitting some bigger mileage and harder workouts, but my body isn't ready for it yet, so it is kind of blah. (Stratus 246.4)
| |
AM - 5 Washington Loop. Well I did it! Up each morning this week. Next week I'll extend it to 7 milers. (Cumulus orange 449.45)
afternoon - 8 River Run. Hadn't done this section of the run in awhile. Didn't wear my watch, so I had no pressure to run faster than my legs wanted to take me. Had a new pair of Stratus on which is always nice. (Stratus red 8)
| |
morning - 15.2 Club run from top of Veyo Hill to Store. Had a good enjoyable run with Mike. I was glad he wanted to run at the pace we did, because I couldn't have gone any faster. Still in the recovery mode. When I got home, I ran down to my parents to help my dad move some stuff (.8 miles). (Stratus red 24) Goal for the week was to recovery. Hopefully I'll feel that way by Monday - but it is not there yet. Goals for next week: I would like to hit between 90-100 all depending on my legs and if they feel fresh at all. Tuesday will be mile repeats, and hills on Friday. So I hope I am ready. |
| |
AM - 7.15 Green Springs Loop. Up a little earlier than last week. Wasn't too hard to get up since I was up every few minutes with my daughter anyway. It was staying up that was tough. (Precision 276.7)
afternoon - 8 River Run. Snowy and cold, cold, cold. Ran with Ruth and Austin. We about turned back after a mile because the wind was blasting the cold and snow right into us. But we made it around to Foremaster and the wind started going with us and the run turned out to be pretty fun. Pace was pretty decent, but no watches to back it up. Probably about 6:45 throughout and they held it well. (Stratus red 32)
| |
AM - 7.15 Green Springs Loop. Cold out this morning (18 degrees when I got home). Two mornings in a row I've been up, and the silver lining, I can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel for the week. (Cumulus red 473.7)
afternoon - 3 x cemetery mile. Ran over with the team and had them do some tempo work as I ran my miles. My goal was 5:20 for three, with 1 minute jog recovery, but I went out way to quick on the first and blew the whole workout. It was very disappointing. Finished with 4x100 barefoot grass striders and then the run back to PVHS - 8.5 total. 1-5:10, It felt so smooth and easy I didn't have any idea that I had gone so quick. 2-5:26, legs really started to lose it. 3-5:32, I noticed that I was not running too hard half way through and when I tried to push it nothing was there. (Precision 284.7)
| |
afternoon - 14 River Trail into Bloomington Hills and back. Started off with a few kids and sent them back at 3.5. I kept it going, but nothing too quick would turn out. Ave. just above 7 for the whole run. A little tired, but glad to be back moving into the longer runs. (Stratus red 46)
evening - 5 Treadmill @1%. Set off at 7:30 for an easy recovery run. Started to feel a little better by the end and thought about grabbing a few more miles, but logic got the better of me as I need to live to run another day (or morning!). Good solid bag of miles today though. (Cumulus red 478.7)

| |
AM - 7.15 Green Springs. A bit slow to work today as I spent extra time defrosting after the run. I wish winter was over. (Cumulus orange 456.6) evening - 10.05 Club Run. Same route as usual. Took it at a solid easy pace; my body wouldn't have let me go faster if I had wanted. I felt some solid fatigue from Tuesday's miles and Wednesday's 14. (Stratus 256.45)
| |
AM - 7.15 Green Springs. Ran the loop in reverse today to mix it up a little. (Cumulus red 485.85)
afternoon - 11.05 Foremaster and some hills. Ran over to Foremaster with the team and then I did 4 x hills to get a base goal for next week when I actually start doing them. I didn't go super hard, but still ran decent - but the times were pathetic (2:07,(2) 2:10's, 2:13) Next week I will run 3 hard with a goal of having them all under 2:00. After I ran down the hosital route (so another fun hill!) and then up the Mall Stream Trail. Got over to Sandstone for 6x100 barefoot grass striders and then 2 laps barefoot. A decent run. (Cumulus Silver

morning - 21.05 Base of Utah Hill from Store and Back. Showed up to run at 7:00 and luckily Clyde was there because it made the run so much better. Although I would have been able to hit the mileage I wanted, it would have been slower, less productive, and a lot less enjoyable. We had a good chat with a lot to talk about having not run together for awhile. Ave. pace for the run was 6:50 - which was pretty consistent throughout, no hard pushes, no lost miles. Good end to the week. (Stratus red 67.05)
Hit my goals for the week and I feel pretty decent. I was going to get a short 3 miler in or something in the afternoon today, but I was busy shoveling dirt for hours and hours.
Goals for next week: Have mileage right around 105 again. Get a little more solid mile workout in (be careful of the pace as to not blow the whole workout). And just keep really enjoying running like I am right now. 2 1/2 to Salt Lake - keep focused and get something out of every workout right now.
| |
afternoon - 11.25 Coral Canyon Trail from PVHS. Good run, but I had to estimate then map the distance (with inaccurate sat. pics.) because I forgot my watch, but I'm guessing it's pretty close. Also forgot my long sleeve and gloves which made it a little more chilly, but it turned out to be a good run anyway. (Stratus 267.7) evening - 6 Treadmill @1%. Had to hit the treadmill to make up miles I didn't get in the morning since I needed to get some sleep after not getting much because of Pyper's ear infection I had been looking forward to running the snow. The sleep was much needed, though. Watched the Jazz pull away from the Hornets. Ran 1st at 7:30 then the next at 6:58. (Cumulus red 497.85) |
| |
AM - 7.15 Green Springs. Recovered a little from yesterday (sleep wise) and got a few in this morning. (Cumulus orange 463.75) late morning - 11.6 - 4 x cemetery mile. Warmed up with 5 miler through Green Springs and set out to do 4xmiles at 5:20. Things didn't go that well. The worst set of miles I have ever had. 1-5:40,2-5:35,3-5:47,4-5:50. Things just went from ugly to worse. The whole time it was as if I had bricks for shoes. The reason? Fatigue. Without a doubt, running 36+ miles in the last 20 hours has beat my legs up. In a perfect world I would be able to spread those four runs out. But with sick kids and then Parent/Teachers today, I had to use what time I had. Oh well. I'll bounce back and have a strong week and get a better set in next week. (Precision 296.3) Weights - 2 sets each. It has been a bit too long since I've been in, so I made myself get some quick ones in. It actually felt good.

| |
AM - 8 Middleton. Go out the back way by the old house and up to the turn to the new houses up in Midd. and back. I wore my watch for the first time in a while in the morning and it spit out some nasty numbers at me. My morning runs have always been a bit slower, however. (Cumulus silver 397.15)
afternoon - 14.1 Fields loop. Started off thinking maybe today's 14 might be a little much. But I just kept it going hitting 7's and not worrying about going faster - it was a okay pace with tired legs. Then finished with a solid Tinman Finish on the last 3. Happy with the overall run and it felt good to bring it down for the last little bit. (Stratus red 81.15)
| |
| | noon - 12 River Trail. Ran down the trail and marked every .25 miles for my team to do workouts on. It was kind of a pain and messy to run with stencils and paint for nearly 7 miles, but its done. (Stratus 279.7) evening - 10.15 Club Run. I am feeling the affects of the long week. I have hit a lot of miles and my body is ready to rest. My goal is to just finish it up and hit the high miles this week and bring it back to 100-110 for a couple. (Stratus red 91.3) | |
| |
AM - 8 Middleton. Run was okay as I was dreaming of big marathon goals, but I sure am tired now. (Cumulus silver 405.15)
afternoon - 3xSunrise hills - 9.5. Jogged out to the hill. Initially, I was a bit worried about the workout, being a bit tired for the week. After last week when I ran the hill (not as a hard workout however) I thought a good goal might be under 2:00 for each of the three planned hills (which was slower than the 1:55 I had hoped for when I planned on bringing hills back). Starting the first, I felt pretty good and flowed up to the half when I needed to work it a bit. I was very happy to see it at 1:51 (one of my best hills ever). But I was a bit worried about the next two, and I hoped I could keep them under 2:00 still. 2-1:50, I felt tired a little earlier, so I kept digging and using the arms, and the time was even better! 3-1:49, Again tired a little earlier, so I dug more as I didn't want to lose the good workout on the last one. I really thought it was going to be about 1:57. So I was really stoked when I hit the time. Fastest hill ever and the best hill workout I have ever had. Granted it was just three and not 4 or 5 hills, but it was a great starting point - and near the end of a very tired week. Ran across Foremaster and then back up the Mall trail and to Sandstone to do 6x100 barefoot grass striders and 2 barefoot loops. (Cumulus blue 8.1)
| |
morning - 23 Pecan Farm (20). Clyde, Steve, Mike, Kimz, and I met at my house and started out on the 20 miler with sights on just finishing with no real push at the end of a LONG week. Pretty much hit 7:00's + for the first 1/2 - Kimz dropped off at 6 and head to his house for a 10 (my high school kids are hitting some good solid mileage - but I wish the others would have ran with him this morning). I GU'ed and quick water at the highway, about 11, and we started up the hills. The Purgatory Hill was over 2 miles long and we mastered it. Picked pace up a little to about 6:50 for the first mile and then we just kept increasing with Clyde and my leads and brought the next mile to 6:20 with a lot right at 6:00. In felt great to increase speed and get the HR moving even though it was a long uphill. Then Clyde and I settled to 6:30's for the next few by Coral Canyon. After finishing, 21, I went to find Mike (who had run his longest week ever) and Steve had grabbed him, so I just circled around Washington for a couple miles. Just HAD to reach 120 since I was so close. (Stratus red 114.3)
Highest Mileage Week Ever! I am pretty stoked about it. And the end of the week was actually better than the first of the week.
Goals for next week: Mileage is going to drop back to 110. I want to hit another set of good hills, and I need to get a better set of miles. But all things considered, training is going well, and I just want to keep putting in some solid mileage as track is picking up.

AM - 8 Strip Mall. Simple, boring, out and back to the first entrance to the Strip Mall by way of the old house. Who needs an entertaining run when it's too dark to see anyway? (Cumulus red 499.85 - they are now retired. Good pair of shoes, I have two more Cumulus 9's. I enjoy the feel of the Cumulus series.) afternoon - 10.6 Parkway extended to Dino Tracks. A pretty crappy run. Started off with the kids and they were having fun, but the pace was a bit slower than it should have been. Then As I went up into the desert, I really slowed up. I was just very tired/sleepy. (Cumulus blue 18.7)

AM - 8 Middleton. I had a strange dream last night that when I woke up I was totally rested and felt no pain or tweaks; the reason, my head wasn't attached to my body - but I didn't seem to mind! (Cumulus silver 413.15)
afternoon - 10.25 - 4xcemetery mile. Mile goal going into this was to have a workout that I wouldn't be ashamed to write about. I'm happy to say that things went pretty well (much better than the last two weeks). Ran out to the cemetery with Ruth 2.2. 1-5:23 I started off well, but felt that I wasn't going that fast. Made sure to check my watch at key points on the loop to track progress. When I looked down the first time, I was going much quicker than I thought and found myself come in at a solid time. 2-5:17 Flet a bit better on this one and kind of held back as I wanted to make sure all 4 miles were okay not just 2. 3-5:25, time slipped a little (my weak spot is the uphill on Telegraph, hard time in the loop to have to push), but I was happy that I was able to work it well enough to stay right in there. 4-5:27, started off strong knowing that I was going to lose some time at the end, but I lost a little more than I thought. I was pretty winded at the end. However, that fatigue is okay to deal with when you have reached a goal. Like I said, much much better than last week. Hit 6x100barefoot grass striders and a little more barefooting at the soccer field and then brought it home for the total mileage. (Precision 305.4)

AM - 8 Strip Mall. It was weird this morning, I went to change the alarm for Al and my mind tried to convince me that I could sleep in and catch the miles later. But as I was thinking about it, my legs just slipped on out of bed and there I went. I guess that's a good thing, because I am glad I got the run in. (Cumulus orange 471.75)
afternoon - 14 River Trail Bloom. Hills. Felt a bit tired as I got going. I realized I need to get going a little quicker on a few of my workouts, so I decided to hit miles 3 and 4 on the way out at Tinman Tempo pace. Got 6:03 and 6:00. As I moved on, the tempo helped me pick up the rest of the pace for the run, as I hit 6:30-6:40's the rest of the run. Tempoed the same two miles on the way back (11 and 12) and got 5:57 and 5:56. But I was working a bit harder to get them. Another nice afternoon and a solid run done. (Stratus

AM - 8 Middleton. A little bit of blowing snowflakes this morning. I had hoped we were through the cold. (Cumulus silver 421.15) evening - 10.15 Club run. Started out with the crew, then they took off. So Jeff and I ran it decent to the intersection where he pealed off. Then I was alone. Everybody else was racing each other hitting some good Tempo miles and I just stuck to the plan and kept it as an easy day for the run. (Stratus red 124.45)

AM - 8 Strip Mall. 10 more seconds of lying in bed and I wouldn't have made it out. But I just couldn't justify it as I thought about my goals and crawled out and sleep ran for the entire 8. (Stratus 287.7)
afternoon - 10 4xSunrise hills. Got going with some track kids and had a shot of pain in the tendons/ligaments(?) at the back of my left knee. I stopped and streched for a minute and had no more trouble with it. Got back going with a few of the runners just getting into track. Hit my hills very good. 1-1:53, a solid time as I held back just a little to make sure I could run them all at a good pace. 2-1:51, hit it solid, but I thought it might be the quickest of them all because I was tired in the legs. 3-1:50 really tried to make it solid and it worked, now just one more. 4-1:46, Got into a good mind set as I started and pushed hard, just kept pushing each section without worrying about the hill as a whole, as I hit the top I knew it was good. Caught my breathe and looked at the watch... best hill ever! So I thought that was pretty snazzy. Then went down across Foremaster up the Mall Trail over to Sandstone for 6x100 barefoot grass striders plus a little more grass running and finished to the school. (Cumulus blue 27.5)

morning - 21.2 Utah Hill to Mike's. Everybody got dropped off and I went on to 20 out. Ran out .5 more and then turned around. The next 2.5 were uphill with a pretty strong downslope wind at my face which started me out near 8:00. Once I peaked out, however, I started running very well. Hit 6:10's then started to take it under 6:00 for awhile. Kept it pretty strong up onto Shivwits and through Kayenta. Then tried to hit MP miles for the last 5, but wasn't able to bring it lower than 5:50 by that point. I was happy with the run, nonetheless. Ave. for the entire run was 6:20 I am pleased with where my running is going; I've had two solid weeks of workouts even with very high mileage and should be ready for SLC. (Stratus red 145.65)

AM - 18.4 Quail Creek. Run was pretty good. Better than some of the runs I've had out on this route. But there wasn't a whole lot built back up in the tank. During the summer I was doing a long run Sat. and another on Monday and it went okay. And I would say this run was about at that same level; the difference, however, is the extra miles during the week I've been getting now. So I think it's another sign that this are progressing. (Cumulus blue 45.9)
evening - 5 Parkway. Nice bookend runs to the day -started with the sun rising, ended with it setting. Too bad everything inbetween wore me out so bad (moving cement, rocks, and dirt for hours and hours). (Stratus 292.7)

AM - 8 Middleton. I was up okay, but my body still needed the rest and I felt it on the run; so slow. Hopefully I can bounce out of it a little with a big workout this afternoon. (Cumulus orange 479.75)
afternoon - 5xcemetery miles - 9.6. Not the best set of miles, I think I am still out of it a bit from the Saturday/Monday combo. All day long I was trying to gauge how I felt and get myself up to the workout, but even on the way out I was worried. 1-5:33, started off pretty easy on purpose as I could tell nothing was there. 2-5:30 Picked it up a bit on this one, but the 2nd half really had a struggle. 3-5:29 Still no rhythm, a sign of leg fatigue. 4-5:40 Out of gas. 5-5:43 maybe I shouldn't have done this one, but I did and it's done. Jogged it back with Ruthie and discussed her goals for the track season. (Precision 315)

AM - 8 Strip Mall. A little better run this morning. A couple easy days in a row are just what I need (and what is planned!). (Stratus red 153.65)
afternoon - 12 River Trail. There are good/fun bad weather runs and then there are bad bad weather runs. This one was bad. Hard winds and rains hit about 2 miles into it and they just got worse. Just before turning around the winds died and I thought, "Great, now I don't get them blowing with me." If only they had stopped things wouldn't have been bad. The wind, literally switched directions just as I did and blew against me the whole way up. I was soaked through on the front and totally dry on the back. I was totally caught off guard and didn't have gloves or even long sleeves - I was frozen - I didn't enjoy it very much. (Cumulus blue

AM - 8 Middleton. I think I am catching up on my sleep a little more, as today's run had a little more energy. Running this early still is never a joy, however. (Cumulus silver 429.15) evening - 10.5 Club run. Took just a little different route as we searched for a lost Clyde. (Stratus 303.2)
| |
AM - 8 Green Springs w/ Warm Springs (up steep hill, 1st left, then back to desert access, connect back to normal route). Best morning run I've had in some time. Awake, felt a little more fresh, ran a little quicker, temps nice with a little drizzle. The lat two easy days have help me catch back up a little I think. (Cumulus orange 487.75, about time to retire)
afternoon - 5xSunrise hills - 9.1 Well I think the needed end of this MicroCycle couldn't come any quicker. I am spent. The hills this week were crap. I was pretty spent, and I didn't push it as much as I should have. 1-1:48, felt decent on this one and started off well. 2-1:53 time slipped more than it should have. 3-1:59 that bites. 4-1:59 I really just had nothing and resigned myself to just trying to not let it slip above 2:00. 5-1:58, I thought if I really gave it everything I could bring it to 1:55 and end on a positive note. I pushed it with everything and that's all that was there. Oh well, move on. Went down Foremaster and up the Mall Trail. Didn't do my barefoot stuff though because I just wanted to be done (not a good excuse). (Cumulus blue 55)

morning - 18.2 Club run around Green Valley, Santa Clara and Ivins to store. Pace was fine at the first, I still felt pretty spent and just wanted to end the week. After Paul broke off and then James we slowly picked it up a little. When Clyde and I turned into Ivins, we decided to Tempo it on in for the last 6 ish and although it wouldn't be 20+ it would be a better workout to have a strong finish than limp on in on a longer run. We took it to a solid tempo (6:00) and then brought it down to marathon pace (5:40's). A little hip stiffness made it a bit harder than I would have hoped, but Clyde kept dragging me along - the bets reason to run with somebody, I would have slacked it if he wasn't there. 3 biggest weeks of mileage ever, done! (Stratus red 171.85)
Goals for next week: get rid of this twinge behind my right knee that showed up today while working in the yard. Back off the miles and let body recover before del Sol. Have a lot of fun down there and run well. Get ready for the last MicroCycle before the taper for SLC. Solid, fast mileage.
| |
AM - 11.75 morning practice started up today. Arctic Circle and then 2450 all the way to the top and around Hearts and then finally AC again, with some laps on the track thrown in. I just set a new monthly record - first time over 400 miles! Good start to the week; and it makes me feel a little better than I can get solid mileage in during the morning practices so I don't have to miss mileage in the afternoon/evening. (Cumulus blue 66.75)
afternoon - 7 boys team run up into Green Springs. Knee was giving me a bit of grief. The past two weeks or so, I have occasionally had a shot of pain up through the tendons(?) behind my right knee. But it hasn't been consistent or long lasting, so no big deal. It showed up, however, on Saturday while working in the yard again, but with a bit more pain. This morning it showed up around mile 9 and hurt throughout the day and again this afternoon. I may have to shut it down for a day or two to just be on the safe side. (Stratus 310.2)
| |
| | Whatever is happening behind my knee hurts too bad to run on. |
| | Still a lot of pain - no running today. | |
| |
afternoon - 3 Arctic Circle and 1 turf barefoot. Needed to go out and give the knee a little test, so... Took it very easy and ran with some of the girls team. Pace was very easy, around 8:00 or slower and pain was manageable. It felt as if I had some sort of mass moving around behind my knee, but it slowly went out. When I got back, Jeff and I ran 1 mile barefoot on the turf; again very easy, but it felt good on my legs. (Precision 318)

morning - 5 Las Vegas. Everybody took it nice and easy on me as we went 5 to stretch the legs out and breathe some fresh Vegas air! The run was good though and the legs seemed to feel a bit better. I really worked on stretching and trying to work out the kinks. (Stratus red 176.85 I had traveled down to Vegas with Steve "Papa Bear", Clyde, Logan, Nick, Adam W., and James B. Stayed the night at the luxurious Sahara and ate my first of three tasty pancake meals late that night. Plan was to get up and run in the morning (see above!) and then head on down to Wickenburg/Phoenix. After the run we headed out as quick as possible and headed out. Eventually got to the start of the race and watched a few start times head out and began to get nervous. afternoon - 1.5 Warm up with Clyde and Logan. They helped me calm my nerves a little and get ready. (Startus red 178.35)
Stretched out a lot more and said a little prayer that the leg would hold up and we would all be safe and tried to get myself mentally ready. I was feeling a bit nervous going first, as I really wanted to get the team off to a good start. evening - 5.45 LEG 1. Race got started off with a little confusion as I was told by one race director that I didn't need my headlamp or vest, then told by the other that I did with about 3 minutes before the race. So I raced up to the van (which was locked!) eventually got in and got back to the start with about 15 seconds to go. My headlamp wasn't adjusted right, so I just held it the whole time. Let Google take the lead as he looked like he might want to push the pace, but another guy (the Tuscon running store team) and I just settled right behind him. Mile 1 - 5:27 a solid start and things were just rolling along on a slight grade up out of town. 2-5:36 About a half mile into this, I moved around Google and we took the lead, never to give it up (but I guess he did tie me for a little). 3-5:24 I hoped that around the end of this mile the grade would turn to the downhill that was shown on the elevation map. The first major incorrect assumption of the race! No downhill! Never downhill! 4-5:29 I could tell now that we were just going to keep climbing up toward the top of this pass and do the exchange up there somewhere, so I just kept plugging. The Running Shop guy was a mystery to me, I couldn't tell exactly what he was up to, but I think he was fading a little and would drop off about 5-10 feet and then work to get right back up on my shoulder. In my head, I thought he was a bit tired, but was telling himself to hold on and keep it tight so that their next guy would go blow us away. So I laughed to myself thinking, "Should I tell this guy that I am the worst of our first 4 and the next three are going to just hammer them?!" 5-5:24 The whole run is just feeling very consistent. I am happy with my knee - its a little tight, but okay. And my pace is just like I am on a treadmill (which of course is stuck on an incline). 5.45-2:19 (5:22 pace). Saw the handoff coming up and wanted to just hammer it down and kill the guy next to me, but I decided that wouldn't be the wisest of moves and just let him settle in beside me and give it to "The Man". The second Logan took the handoff, I knew it was over!
We took off to the next start and I cooled it off about 1 mile. (Ohana -6.45

beyond early AM (12:44 AM - actually not a bad start time, because it wasn't too late or too early yet) - LEG 2 (13 for the team) Cave Creek. 7.05 miles. Tried to get a little nap at the major exchange, but I just laid there. Got up and jogged a bit of a warmup around the school parking lot a few times and figured it was time to go. (Stratus red 179.1)
By this time the team had secured a solid lead and I was just hoping I could maintain it. 1-5:33 I started out in a populated area: school, shopping, etc.. and felt okay about it all. Figured I would just ease into it. And this mile felt good. 2-5:54 I started the climbing again (this was supposed to be my hardest leg, rated Very Hard, because of length and a solid climb throughout). I really started to lose focus here. I was tired and just couldn't keep the pace where it should have been. 3-6:01, Oh crap a 6 minute mile. I am in trouble now. 4-6:02 More crap another one. I hadn't seen a soul now for over 2 miles, I hope I am going the right direction. I was going through a residential area kind of like Bloomington Hills (rolling ups alternating with more ups) and I was very hesitant about where I was going. 5-6:15 About 3/4 through this mile I finally caught someone. Way off in the distance I saw a blinking light, what a relief. 6-6:10 It's official, I suck and I want to quit. 7-5:24 I didn't feel that great, but I was very mad at myself for how poorly I ran and started to grind it a bit to try and bring it down. I thought this mile was a little quicker, but I was working hard to get there. 7.05 - Just pushed the pace on in. Cooled down for about 1 mile. I guess I gained about 30 seconds on my guy here even though I ran so bad. I guess he was just as spent as I was. (Ohana -8 Off to see Logan do his amazing thing - followed by Nick being just as amazing. It was very cool to see how real runners can just crank out amazing runs after amazing runs! AM (6:00 AM) Leg 3 (#25) 5.3 miles Fountain Hills. Got up after about 25 minutes of sleeping and did another warm up. Hit the ol' MyoMed counter and hit some of the good stuff and ran a mile to get going (Stratus red -1. The Darkhorse came flying in and almost forgot to give me the band, and I took off. The first part of leg the leg was very cool. The sun was starting to come up and I was going through this park and around a neat lake, had a little downhill, and I felt good. 1-5:23 Hooray this is the end of this, keep pushing and make up for the struggle last time. 2-5:27 Kept it rolling. 3-5:59 Now I am tired and the thrill of being done is gone. 4-5:41 Trying to use the rolling hills, but I am too tired to use the downhill and the uphill is just abusing me even more. 5-6:19 More uphill. I saw my time going up and up and just thought, "Who cares?" 5.3-1:38 (5:51 pace) I see the end and am just so happy to be done with this. I can now pass off the race to people who can fly and I can crash! Cooled down about .5 miles and just got to enjoy the rest of the race. (Ohana 5-5.8 Everyone else did amazing and the team easily won - because of great runs from top to bottom. 17:04 total for the 182(?) miles an average of 5:38/mile! We jogged in with Steve at the finish after setting up the Keiggermeister! After a great dinner at James and Lybi W's. (thanks guys and Sarah), we (our van) decided to get a few miles in. afternoon - 7.3 Green Springs loop from PVHS with extension into Sandberg's. Ran with a decent crew of my guys - they ran well. Knee was a little tight, but held up. I needed the extra rest this morning and didn't run. So I planned on getting a few in in the evening, but I was too tired and yelling at everyone and needed to go to bed. So I'll pick it up more throughout the week. (Stratus 317.5)

AM - 10.3 Wendy's with double extension. Back up and at 'em this morning. Run was solid. Saw the average come down a little and more than half the miles under 7 which is good for me in the early morning. I am trying to convert my body to realizing that I need to get a good pace going in the morning as these runs are often my main workouts now with track in the afternoon. (Cumulus blue 77.05)
afternoon - 5xRiver Trail Miles. 10.2 total. Pretty crappy set of miles. I had hoped for some real solid times, but I most definitely had some left over fatigue from the relay. 1-5:36, 2-5:41 with a 1 minute jog between. Then I decided to go down the trail 1 more mile before hitting the next three, hoping the wind would help me out on the way back. 3-5:28, 4-5:41, 5-5:54. Not so sweet. Oh well. Icing up the knee as I speak. It has been a little weak and tired, but is coming around. (precision 328.2)

AM - 12 the new regular route on M/W/F at practice (a few laps until kids get there and stretched, then AC, then reverse 2450 up to Red Cliffs and around, laps again waiting for next group and then AC once more). I am tired! Sleepy and fatigued. I tried to incorporate 2 miles at Marathon Pace effort on the 2450. First was from school down the hill; it felt okay, but I knew I wasn't going MP (6:05). Second was flat section at bottom of hill for .5 and up 2450 for .5 ending at the park; slower but still tried to maintain effort (6:30). I was running pretty slow and tired by the last few miles. (Stratus red 191.1)
afternoon - 6 GreenSprings. I was absolutely tired and out of it. I was just exhausted, so I cut the run way short and just called it a day. Sometimes its just better to kill it instead of drag out the agony. Ave pace was 7:57 ahhhh! (Cumulus silver 435.15)

AM - 8 Middleton. Slept in until 5:15! Run took a 180' from yesterday afternoon. Ran much better. (Cumulus blue 85.05)
evening - 10 Club Run on Red Hills Trail down to Temple and College and back to store. Good solid run, times weren't great, but neither is my running right now. (Stratus 327.8)

AM - 13.2 Wendy's-Green Springs. I knew I would be a bit slow, but a 1:40? I am in need of a little break. Just finish off the week and be done for a couple days. (Cumulus blue 90.35) noon - 5 Washington Parkway. Nice easy run. Only 1 more for the week. (Precision 333.2)

AM - 21.05 Green Valley Loop. A bit early, but had to because of a meet. Run was okay, but not stellar. Tried to pick the pace up moving down Valley View and back into town, but could only manage 6:30's. Ave was 7:16. Hips were very sore as I finished and it made it hard to finish up, but they have loosened up now. (Stratus red 212.15)
A pretty solid week considering I only hit a 7 on Monday. Hopefully the weekend will let me finish off a bit of recovery. Goals for next week: Hit some very good miles at the first of the week so I can back off a little to try and get a decent 10K Saturday that I am going to use for my speed for the week. 3 more SOLID weeks and then the taper.

morning - 17 Target loop, then mall run, then home. I guess it was morning, although it seemed like I should have called it AM because of the time change. A decent run. (Cumulus blue 107.35
evening - 5 Washington Parkway reverse. Ran the opposite way so I would have enough light on the dirt, but the sunlight just kept lingering and it was light almost the whole way. A pretty tired run. A lot of pain and fatigue in the lower abductors. It's could be a tough one tomorrow. (Cumulus orange 492.75) |

morning - 17.1 Target loop, then Mall run (modified), and home by way of DogPound. Well it was a crapper, for sure. Very wiped out. I am glad it is finished. Miles will be cut back a bit now this week (to 15/day or so). (Stratus red 229.25)

morning - 10.35 to PVHS, GS 5 w/ team, home. Felt a bit stronger this morning, but still not ready to race. (Stratus 338.5)

morning - 8 to PVHS and then Staheli Hill and home. Cut out from the team and just headed home during the run since I will get 7 tonight. Still not feeling sharp at all. (Stratus red 237.25)
evening - 9.75 Club run on Spectrum course and to Mike's house. It was nice to run the course; not nice to run the 4 miles after. I was only planning/wanting/needing to run 7 tonight, and my body didn't think that the extra was necessarily a good thing. In fact when most everybody else decided to go get 10, I just sat there like a lump on a log. Hopefully I can get something in my legs for Saturday, or it's going to be a disappointment. Also, this is holding me back from getting mentally ready - I know it's not the most important race ever, but I would like to run well and test where my fitness actually is going into the last month before SL. (Stratus 346.25)
| | morning - 7.25 to PVHS then Sandberg's Pond w/ team and home. Had a very fun run around the desert and the pond. Found a frisbee and let the throwing of that lead us around for awhile. Willy never caught any cows, but he did land in a nice pile of fresh cow crap when he tripped trying to catch the frisbee (we all had to stop we were laughing so hard!). Broke in a new pair of Landreth 4's. They felt pretty good. I really like the cushioning for now. It seems that the forefoot is a little wider - good for some people, but I didn't need the extra room. (Landreth 7.25) | |

1 mile warm up at the race finish. Then caught one of the last buses up. (Precision 339.2)
At the start line, warmed up just a little more (.3) and got ready to go. All the usual suspects were around and Clyde told me that a strong UVSC runner was around who had just run 15 flat 5000 on the track last week. We took off and Nick, UVSC, Clyde and I settled into a strong pace and worked around Jose, who was doing his usual thing, after a few minutes. I wanted a 4:40 first mile and hoped I could hold onto to something after that. 1-4:40, exactly what I wanted. Although it didn't seem like I was working hard, it was fast and my legs and mind started to pay on the second mile. 2-5:10, This mile was exactly where I wanted it as well, but Clyde tested me and pulled away by about 5 seconds or so here (Kind of unusual for him to push it hard after a hard mile 1). 3-5:10 again. I knew the third mile had to pick back up to sub 5, but I don't know I just didn't feel like it was all there. I did notice nick break the UVSC guy and thought that we would actually go around him, but he ended up settling back in and running solid. Clyde gained another few seconds here. 4-5:24 Up through the first neighborhood. I needed a 5:16 here and I lost a few. I tried to gain a few seconds on Clyde, but then he regained them on the down out of the neighborhood. I kind of resigned myself to the thought that I wouldn't catch him. 5-5:32 This should have been where I caught Clyde, but I think we were both in hard cruise/survive mode for this mile. At the end of this mile Nick and UVSC missed a turn and ended up cutting 2/3's? a mile off the race, which was kind of a bummer. 6-5:27 I had a little surge that gained me a second or two on Clyde, but then I lost the feel for it and settled again. But on the downhill out of the second neighborhood, I decided to try and give it one more push. As I did, I quickly began eating up ground on Clyde. 6.2-1:10 (5:58 pace) Coming off the roundabout, I was only 2 seconds behind him, but just then at about the mile marker, Clyde surged it and I didn't have it go with him and I just let him pull back away and I had a very slow finish. I went back and cooled down for 3.05 as I ran back to Ally and ran in with her. This was her first 10K and she did great! I don't know what to take from this race. I felt that it was a good workout and a decent run, but I don't feel any more ready for Salt Lake than I had before. I don't feel fast at all and am a little disappointed with the time. I guess I just need to stick to the plan and let the mileage be at 100 and no more, and get some solid 800's and 1200's in over the next few weeks. Maybe that will get the leg turnover going and some positive things moving for me. (Ohana -9.05 - these shoes are shot. They have been great, but they are done. I got a rock in my shoe right at the start, and it developed a very strong blister by the end of the race.
| |
AM - 8.3 morning practice. Laps and AC w/ Austin, part with Ruth, then 2450. But by the end I could really feel my cold/flu sapping any energy I once had out of me, so I called it quits in hope of being able to make it through the day. Blister didn't bug too much, just a little rubbing on the side of the foot. (Landreth 15.55)
afternoon - 7 Hospital Run. Not a great run by any means; marked mostly by coughing and hacking up crap from my lungs. But I made it through and Ruth probably won't ever run near me again. (Stratus 353.75)
| |
afternoon - 11.25 5x1000 on River Trail and then 4 barefoot striders. The cough medicine knocked me out pretty good last night and I wasn't able to get up and run this morning. I hoped I could get a decent workout in with this cough. It went rpetty good considering - at least a step in the right direction, considering... Ran down to the trail and did the first on the first part of the trail 1-3:28, this is where I hoped I would be able to get all of them, so I was pleased. 2-3:30 Just a little slower, but things were going okay. 3-3:31 A pretty solid one, had a little better time until the steep (but short) climb by the post office. 4-3:31 Brought it back up the trail now and was still maintaining a pretty decent pace. 5-3:37 dropped a bit more than I would have liked, a sign that I was done - so I guess it was good that I was. Ran back to school and did some barefoot work. These would have been quicker had I not been sick, but the coughing and the soreness in the muscles was holding me back a bit. But it feels pretty good to pick up the pace. (Stratus red 247.95)
evening - 4 Treadmill @ 1%. It's been a long time since I hit the treadmill. I wanted to grab a few more miles, but still allow myself to be able to have rest and recover to get feeling better, so I just went four. Started with a mile at 7:30, then 7:00, then 6:30, and finally 6:00. Maybe I need to get back on the treadmill once in a while to force myself to hit some pacing like I did toward the end? (Cumulus silver 444.15)

| |
AM - 11.3 morning practice: laps, AC, 2450, AC. Had a few heavy coughing fits and also some time where it chilled a little. Was pretty spent by the end of it. (Cumulus blue 118.65)
no run this afternoon - decided not to run w/ the kids at practice, then when I got home I just crashed.
| |
Nothing today - I doubt for the rest of the week unless I start feeling better. I just read this article by Frank Shorter and he said, "Finally, remember that the more consistent you are in your training, the less you must rely on a perfect training run every day." Which makes me feel a little better about having to miss a few days from being sick.
| |
| | Another goose egg - even missed the track meet last night because I was so wasted. | |
| | Can't breathe = can't run |
| |
I am coming close to a pretty important crossroads. It seems that I am missing some very important workout time for tuning things up for the Salt Lake Marathon. I am beginning to think that maybe I won't be able to run it. I am leaning toward the idea that if I can't get at least two solid workouts in later this week, I will just pass on SLC. It is a tough decision. I know I could still run a solid time if I get better and am running again in say a week and a half. But I don't want to run just a solid time. I have put a lot of effort into this throughout the winter and more and have my sights set pretty high. If I can't run, I will just reevaluate. I would love to move back to Ogden, but with State Track, I just can't. What do some of you think (and don't just give me that sugar-coated bs of you'll do great and a 2:35 is great blah... blah... blah...) Doc says pneumonia!
| |
afternoon - 3 on track. Back at it. I figured my lungs would be a little spent, but that my legs wouldn't be too bad coming around - wrong. I felt like an old man. But my lungs felt decent. I didn't push the pace by any means and only ran laps so I could quit if I needed. But it was nice to get moving again. I think I'll bump it up just a little tomorrow. (Landreth 18.55)
| |
| |
afternoon - 5 Mall Run. Went out and about today. Legs were a bit tired, but lungs felt pretty solid. At first I thought I wouldn't be able to do more than 5 tomorrow, but once I got going things evened out and I think I will be able to do 7 or so tomorrow. (Cumulus blue 123.65)
| |
| |
afternoon - 8.6 River Trail. Felt pretty decent throughout the run. Some old fellow on a bike pulled up along-side me and rode with me as I ran. I think he was Name Dropper Sr. He talked the entire time about races he'd run and people he knew. But it made the run go smoother. Had to run in old Cumulus reds because I brought two different shoes to school - luckily I had these here already. (Cumulus red 509.5)
| |
| |
AM - 9.5 Wendy's. Earliest I have been up in over two weeks and it killed me. Run was exhausting. Ave. was only 8:15. I knew I had been running slow this week, but this was the first time I wore my watch to prove it. Yesterday was a much better run. (Landreth 28.05)
| |
| |
mid-morning - 10 River Trail. Sneaked out during my prep to get the run in. Right away I could tell it was going to be better than yesterday. I could feel the difference in my lungs and legs. I would say that they are both around 70% now - its coming up. Run was 1:12.30, so an average of 7:15 - the best run yet. (Stratus 363.75)
|
| |
morning - 20.25 SGM course. Ran the first Steve and Bill and they kept me honest and moving for the first 10.05. We averaged a solid 7:15 for this section. Hit a water break and then planned on trying a little tempo. I wasn't sure where I would be at - maybe 6:30 or so. But Steve pulled me along and we average right at 6:00 for pretty much the whole 10, except the winchester hill (which actually split on to two miles) where I felt like I needed to sit back or I might not make it. Lungs were pretty good; they started to close off a bit toward the end. Now I am just really needing the legs to come around. This felt like one of the hardest workouts I have ever done just because it was so tough to just keep the legs moving at this pace - but it is coming around. Finished with a .2 cool to the store. (Landreth 48.3)
| |
| |
AM - 11.75 Target Loop. Getting wasn't bad this morning! Running was. Could feel Saturday's run in my legs - sore and tired. I am not anywhere near 100% yet, and I may just have to accept the fact that I won't be at the race. (Landreth 60.05)
Checked my resting heart rate yesterday. It was a bit high, 55. Although I haven't taken it in a long time to have a solid base to judge by, I would say that it was high because of continued fatigue from Saturday's hard workout and my body still feeling the effects of the sickness. Goals for the week: Get everything on track as best as possible. I would like to push toward 100 miles (that sounds weird for the week before a marathon, but I feel like it would do a lot of good for me to bring my miles up and try to keep fitness strong after the stages of not running and recovering); also I need to get a solid speed workout in (800's tomorrow -kind of scary, I don't know how good they'll be); and most importantly a good long run/tempo finish on Saturday. Then next week I'll get decent mileage in on Monday and Tuesday and then set into whatever kind of taper I can get. afternoon - 7.4 Shnobe Kibe Trail. Went out with team to hit a 7 miler to Shnobe Kibe by way of the new road to the bridge, but we were just short on mileage before the turn around. So Ruth found a sweet trail which we just extended around the mountain. It had vicious little rollers and was just a lot of fun. Fun running with the kids even though they had to slow down for the old man. (Cumulus blue 131.05)
| |
AM - 10x800's. 2.7 mile warmup from home to PVHS. Then 10x800's. I really didn't know what to expect from this workout. I hoped it would show signs of improvement, but I realize I haven't done a workout like this in a month. They were slower than I thought. The first 5 were right around 2:55 give or take a second. Then my right hammy really tightened up and I had to stretch it a lot. 6 was 2:53, but at 7 it tightened up again and I slowed to a 2:58. Stretched really good again then 8,9, and 10 all slowed to over 3:00. Then cooled down with a mile. I was pretty disappointed about it all. (Stratus red 258.8)
When I was trying to decide whether or not to still do SLC I mentioned I didn't want any 2:35 is okay comments. Now I am pleading for a 2:35! Actually, I have decided (at least for today - and I hope I can change this later) that my realistic goal for SLC is going to be 2:50. What a bummer after such a strong winter. evening - 3.5 Ran home from school after the track meet by way of Cottonmill East to extend it a little. (Stratus red 262.3)
| |
afternoon - 13.25 River Trail and Fire Station desert. Went out for 8 by myself at the end of the school day and then got back and ran with the boys team out to the Fire Station and the desert around there. 1st part of the run was iffy, 2nd part was a bit better. (Stratus 377)
|
| |
AM - 12 Target Loop. Hard to get out of bed, but once I did, the run was okay. Maybe just a little bit better than Monday when I did this. Happy I didn't run twice yesterday, even though this will be my only run today too (track meet). I think my legs are just waiting to come back - right there, just waiting to break through. (Cumulus blue 143.05)
| |
| |
AM - 10 morning practice. Had trouble getting up, since I had just barely gone to bed (dirty track meets!). Then my Jeep wouldn't start. So I barely made it to practice before Ruth had to run alone. We did AC. Then I did 2450 and 2 laps while waiting for Kimz and Austin. Then the three of us did AC. Isn't it interesting that the three that show up to practice in the morning are also the three that are actually hitting PR's and BYU and State times. (Stratus red 272.3)
Jumped on the scale this morning and was 145.8 without shoes. A bit low still - granted that was after my run, but I didn't sweat much in the chill this morning. I have always run my best races at a race weight of 150. But I think somewhere around 148 will still bring me back enough strength to run solid. afternoon - 6 Green Springs. Ran with the boys and Ruth. Just a nice easy run to help us all try and get our legs back. (Cumulus silver 450.15)
| Race: |
Run 4 Kids (6.2 Miles) 00:35:19, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1
morning - I decided to do this race for my hard workout for the day since the Steves got me in free and it was hard to workout the ride up to Central for 20 on the course. My goal was to just make it a solid workout, whatever that meant - and hopefully get a continued better feel as I approach SL in a week (yikes!) Met up with Steve, Bill, and Clyde for a run on the course before the race. It was going to be a hard, hilly bugger. In a way I was kind of happy for that because I don't feel I can run that fast right now anyway. (Landreth 66.45)
Got back just in time to do the quick last minute race adjustments and then we were off. 1-5:25, Clyde established early control, and it seemed as if I felt okay and would just run in 2nd throughout (which is apparently just my destiny!), but this was the first solid under 6:00 minute pace I had had since being sick. 2-5:21 included the 2nd climb of the race (the first was up around the elem.) This was a tough hill up past the park, but then a great downhill which I would have loved to burn up. 3-5:36 A bit of fatigue, but nothing major. The flattest mile of the race. Worried a little about being caught. 4-5:40 Still running pretty good as we turned onto the highway. My form felt pretty good throughout the race. 5-6:22 A mother of a section. Uphill throughout with a big hill by the golf course maintenance yard. I run this section all the time on Junction, but this was the first time I raced it. At one point I looked at my watch and my pace was 7:23; I thought, "I am in a RACE and am going 7:23 pace. Oh boy..." 6-6:02 Tried to get back on pace as I topped out on the hill, but the wind held me to just 5:40 for the last .5 of this mile and I could quite bring it back under 6. .2-(.16 on watch)52 secs. (5:24 pace) Just finished it on in at a solid pace. (Ohana 6.2)(new pair - felt great) Grabbed a drink and talked at the line for a minute and then Steve, Clyde, James, and I ran the course again and 7:30 pace and then finished it off with another 1.2 to hit the 20 mark. (Landreth 73.95)
Felt good enough about the race that I will make an adjustment to my goal for SLC. I am going to set it at 2:40; maybe a little ambitious, but today's run was solid and it made me happy to run a little better.
| |
AM - 10.2 morning practice. AC w/ Ruth. 2450 up to DI. Then AC with a larger group! I hope the kids realize they need to be there consistently after I kind of got on them last week. Taper week! It is kind of weird going in to the week of a marathon having just run 95 last week. But it needed to be done. I plan on hitting 8 tomorrow and then a massage, 7 Weds., 5 Thurs and Fri. and then the race. So I hope that will lead me to feeling fresh and ready to go. (Cumulus blue 153.25)
| |
| |
AM - 8 Middleton. Ran the Middleton 8 out and back with a goal of trying to hit MP for the last four (or at least as close as I could get). I still have a struggle hitting good workouts in the morning. It is hard to run faster when I am tired, its dark, I'm hungry, I'm tired! But it was a good workout and I could feel it burning a bit. Getting back, I started my carbo load for the next three days. This is something I am still trying to figure out, but I am trying 2 new carb drinks to help get it all in. (Landreth 81.95)
| |
| |
AM - 6.65 Green Springs w/o extension. Run was nice today. Didn't time anything, just went with the flow. (Stratus 383.65)
Got a massage last night. It felt pretty decent. I wasn't totally mush relaxed when it was done - but I really didn't know what to expect. But it did get some crazy knots out of my back and loosened up my hammies, calves, and hip flexors a lot, so that is real good.
| |
morning - 5.2 Parkway. Got to sleep in a little (w/ just teacher meetings today and no school). Had a solid 5 miler on the Parkway. Ran MP from the top of the Parkway down and into Cottonmill E. (2 miles: 5:30, 5:50). Rolled on the downhill, and tried to keep it smooth on the flat and felt better about it toward the end. I think 2:40 is still a legit/tough goal. Last day of carbo-loading. I have eaten so much, I don't feel like eating anymore. (Startus red 277.5)
| |
| |
morning - 5.05 Sego Lily Loop in Sandy. Temps were very pleasant for the run. Took about 3.5 miles to work the kinks out of the legs, but once I did, I started thinking about the race and I really started to roll w/o even noticing. (Landreth 86) Then I went to the expo and got my number. I worried that I wouldn't be registered because no one would reply to my emails, and sure enough I wasn't. But they were very helpful and took care of it no problem. Well... here we go.
| Race: |
Salt Lake City Marathon (26.2 Miles) 02:49:10, Place overall: 13, Place in age division: 3
I guess I'll write about my race while I can still remember it, even
though I really don't feel like it. What a mix of emotions - I still
don't really know what to say/think/feel about this run even days
later. I really thought 2:40 would be possible, but with the wind, I
knew it would slow me a little bit. I started out trying for it
anyway. James (he ran the 1/2 and hit a big PR in 1:28!) and I got to
the start with plenty of time to get ready. Then got up on the line
and saw everybody after a short little warm up. (splits are Garmin,
not mile markers, and it measured a little long, so they don't add up
perfectly.) 1-5:44
Started off about where I wanted. Felt the group out and let the
leaders go away as Sasha, Matt H., and I kind of established position.
I actually wanted to start a little closer to 6, and in retrospect, I
should have stayed right with Adam and Kory. 2-5:50 Pretty solid
start. Sasha moves up and it's basically Matt H. and I now with no one
else really around. 3-6:06 A little slower up the hill and into the
wind, but just fine. 4-5:22 Big downhill mile, and we just let it
roll, but don't push to overwork it. 5-5:37 Continue the downhill and
near the park. 6-5:58 Settled back into pace and worked with Matt
through the park. I was worried about the hills (in the couple weeks
back up to the race, it seemed that I had no hill strength at all) and
I had to work a little to hard to stay with Matt. 7-6:08 Set back into
a good rhythm and Matt and I kept switching leads in the wind. Saw
Sasha up a ways and decided working together we might get to him by the
end of the race. (Oh how wrong!) 8-6:24 Wind was really working me.
9-6:23 The hill up Keller Lane ruined me. Matt pulled away and I just
couldn't go and I started thinking bad. 10-6:19 Trying to work the
wind and keep strong. 11-6:01 A better mile because Adam caught me and
I ran right behind him for the mile, trying to get my legs back.
12-6:20 Then he left me. 13-6:57 This is where I got the worst mentally
in a race I have ever been (miles 13-20). I really lost any positive
thoughts and the race became a nightmare on this last climb before the
turn on 62nd. 14-6:17 Tried to bring it back together on the downhill,
but as the time shows I just couldn't. And I watched the lead ladies
just pull away. 15-6:18 It is weird. The pace was not hard to keep at
all (because it was slow), but I couldn't go any faster, and it was
making me SO mad and frustrated. 16-7:00 I can't repeat the thoughts
that were going through my mind at this point. Ally's grandma lives
right off here and I was hoping she was out so I could quit. I just
wanted to walk off. She wasn't, but that didn't stop me from looking
for an out. I walked through the aid station at the end here and hoped
to see a van/something that would take me in. 17-6:31 Figured I just
had to keep going, so I did. 18-7:11 Walked through the aid station
again. Not really because I hurt or anything at all, but just because
I wanted to (to be done, to quit, to never run again). 19-6:43 Started
running again. Why? 20-7:30 Walked through again. And again for no
reason. The 6:30 pace wasn't hurting me at all, I just was so negative
walking was my only out. But then I saw that I could still get 2:50
and I just pushed the thoughts out and decided I could make something
of the run. 21-6:36 Tried to just focus on the few that had passed me
because of my breaks and I actually stayed the same distance with
them. 22-6:28 For a moment I thought about walking again (I had each
of the last three stations), but I figured why? I don't need to.
23-6:32 Staying at this pace still. I think it showed that my
endurance was just fine (or had come back pretty good), but the
fastness was what was really affected by the sickness (and it had not
come back at all). 24-6:37 still on pace to hit that sub 2:50 and that
made me feel okay. 25-6:56 dodging a lot of 1/2'ers and the little
climb in town here really hit me again. 26-7:00 I am just trying to
dig, but really I am pretty spent. .2 (.34 on Garmin)- 6:29 pace.
Finish was a little more organized with a 1/2 and a marathon chute. I
could tell I was going down about the last .1. Legs were wobbling and
I couldn't breathe at all. So I did, it was fun. I weezed and tried
to breathe as they gave me an inhaler thing. But the breath came back
quick and I just walked out as if nothing happened. (Ohana 32.7)
So a 2:49:10. And that's where I am stuck. I don't even feel
like I ran a marathon. I run workouts quicker than that, but I was
coming back from being sick. Whatever... It's over and I'll chill for
awhile and then try to get back into it with a better attitude.
| | Didn't run today - but because it's Boston, I looked back to last year. Funny stuff! I wrote about how I hated it so much and am not going back. Now I can't wait to go back. Things were pretty vicious last year, and I had a struggle to the finish. But those types of memories either strengthen (the challenge of the weather) or lessen (the final 10K struggle) as time moves on. That's what I am hoping for with SLC. I've had marathon struggles before: 3:30, 2005 TOU, after being very sick and not running for two weeks up to the marathon, and basically the memory of that is gone (except for passing out an mile 17 and then finishing in a cramped and knotted heap!); 3:20 2006 SLC, first marathon back from stroke, and the same thing, I just remember the fact that I was so happy to be back running even though it was a horribly difficult thing to finish. | |
| | I won't get a run in today either, with a track meet this afternoon. But I think I will be ready mentally for a little something tomorrow! | |
| |
Took another one off - no reason, just don't feel like running, yet.
|
| |
morning - 3 AC morning practice. Just hit the late session with Austin. Everyone else showed up and started a bit late. Run was pretty decent. A few kinks in the hips and knees, but it was amazing how short it was. Nice to be running again. (Stratus 386.65)
afternoon - 4 home from PVHS by way of Dogpound. Decided to get a little run in instead of driving. Knees and hips felt a little better. (Stratus 390.65)
| |
AM - 3 PVHS from home. Ran back to school carrying all my stuff in a backpack. It was a major pain - the pack dug into my arms and bounced a lot, so I carried it like a football switching arms every few hundred meters since it weighed more with a jacket and extra stuff for the track meet today. No knee or hip pain. But that's the only run for the day. (Stratus red 280.5)
| |
| |
afternoon - 8.5 Grapevine Springs by way of Reserve, under the culvert, on top of Highland, and down home by way of Parkway. It was a bit windy! I am tired of the wind. I felt pretty good and enjoyed the run. (Landreth 94.5)
| |
| |
AM - 10.5 morning practice: AC, 2450 extended, Green Springs. Although not good to have to get up, it was very nice to be running this morning. Had fun runs with the team. (Cumulus silver 460.65)
Goals for the week: Get a solid week's mileage in - don't want to put a number on it, yet. Just want to run good mileage and let my body finish its recovery. BYU this week which will probably throw off my mileage a little bit, but that's okay. Be more positive in all aspects of my life, including running.
afternoon - 14x400's. Did a 1 mile warmup as the team did their 2 miler. Then hit the track with them. I wanted to help them be more consistent and hit the times they needed, but I knew I would be a little behind the top group; and mostly I wanted to survive! Did 3 sets of 4 with 1 minute jog between rep and full recovery between sets (but while the group was doing recovery, I was running with the girls) 1-1:12, 2-1:12, 3-1:12, 4-1:10 5-1:24(w/ Ashley), 6-1:11, 7-1:13, 8-1:13, 9-1:11, 10-1:25(w/ Ashley), 11-1:12, 12-1:12, 13-1:18 (I pretty much begged Ruth to have me run these two with her to cover how dead I was, and she still pushed me!), 14-1:14. Ended with 1.5 cooldown. This was a workout! I about lost it (my lunch) a time or two. These kids are getting pretty dang good. They'll be schooling the old man in races soon enough. (Cumulus blue 160)
| |
AM - 8 Middleton. Somehow made it through this run. Man, it was slow. Creeky and tired this morning. (Landreth 102.5)
evening - 5 Treadmill @1%. Started off with 7:30 for 2 miles and then 6:58 for 3. Felt a little less worn than this morning. Hadn't been on the treadmill in awhile, but it was good. (Stratus 395.65)
| |
AM - 10.5 morning practice. AC,2450 extended, GS. Not really tight and sore, I guess just worn out. My joints really ached this morning and kept me slow. (Stratus red 291)
afternoon - 4 Mosquito Trail to Dead Car and back with the boys and Ruth. I must apologize to Ruthie for having to run with the boys, but it makes life more interesting I am sure. Made Austin lay down (forcefully) in a ditch and that was worth it! (Cumulus silver 464.65)
| |
afternoon - 10 River Trail. Pretty slow. I've decided to just finish out the weeks with 10's on Friday and Saturday and no doubles. Maybe that will help freshen me up a bit. (Landreth 112.5)
| |
| |
AM - 10 Wendy's. Run went much better this morning. I think my legs are starting to freshen up a bit. (Cumulus blue 170)
| |
| | Nothing - Too lazy, tired, and sick from Olive Garden to make myself get up. Oh well... no big deal this week. |
| |
AM - 8 Middleton. Run went very well this morning. Best run I've had since before being sick. Didn't time it, but from the clock at home, the 8 was in about 55 minutes - not the most stellar thing in the world, but I just felt very good. (Stratus red 300) afternoon - 12x200's. Started with 1 1/2 mile warmup and then got into the workout. I didn't really have a clear goal going into it (which is never a good thing), but I hadn't done 2's in ... forever (?) so I just wanted to do as many as I could at a quick pace. I soon found that I really don't have a quick pace anymore! But I ran them as hard as I could. Pretty much they were 34's with a couple 33's and then a couple 35's toward the end; then the wind really picked up and slowed me to 36's on the last two - with a 200 jog (1 minute approx.) between each one. It was pretty difficult. But a good 10K style workout as far as the demands on the body go. Ended with another 1 1/2 of grass loops. (Precision 345.2)
| |

AM - 10 Wendy's. Solid run. Didn't feel as good and smooth as yesterday - obviously from beating myself up on the track. However, I did run at a faster pace even though I didn't wear a watch (the clock said right around 1:10 for the run). (Cumulus blue 180) afternoon - 4 Old Car. Easy run with the boys team getting them ready for Region tomorrow and Thurs. I think they will all do well (boys and girls). They are very prepared, just need to be mentally tough. (Cumulus red 513.5)
| |
| | morning - 12 Fields Loop. Slept in a little today before having to go set up for Region track. Run was okay. Again didn't time it, just trying to enjoy being out running and build it easily through May to get ready for a great summer. Both knees have been giving me a few problems. Left knee - behind the knee like in the tendons or something; right knee - inside the knee. I have noticed that I am walking around like an old man lately. (Stratus 407.65) |
| | AM - 8 Green Springs with a few extensions to make it hit the 8. An enjoyable run with some light sprinkles and then a couple nice cloud bursts. It is always fun to run in the rain because we have so little of it. My legs were mighty sore at first, but quickly moved out of it and the run was another good one. I guess I would say I am starting to come back from the sickness, marathon, and post-marathon blues. (Landreth 120.5) | |

afternoon - 10.5 GS/PL/WT Loop. Hadn't been up in the desert for a long time. There were a ton of flowers and cacti in bloom - is was very cool. Had a good run and enjoyed it. (Cumulus red 524)

Kanab 10K (6.2 Miles) 00:33:20, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1
Got to Kanab, after hitching a ride with Bill and Kendrick, in perfect time to get packet, catch a ride up to the start and get in a good warmup. Problem was, once we got to the start, we weren't allowed to run on the road to warmup. So we ran about 20 little circles around this parking lot to get a 1.5 warmup in and that was enough for all of us - maybe not our bodies, but for our sanity! It didn't look like any competition was there and that was quickly confirmed as the race started and Bill and I were about 50 meters up after about 100 meters! 1-5:21 Just really eased into it. Probably should have pushed this mile a lot quicker to hit my goal time. But I felt like just easing into it. I imagine this was probably a sub 5 mile on a hard race day. 2-5:03 This mile was also a pretty easy mile and even the 5:03 was smooth, but I was into race mode now. 3-5:19 For a course that is supposed to be downhill, I wasn't expecting this. Mile 3 and almost all of mile 4 were a gradual, not killer - but slowing you down, uphill; so I was proud that I was moving along pretty well. Luckily I didn't need any water or anything; they were barely set up and snagged me a water which would have come just in time had I wanted it (but this was probably the only snag - the race was really well managed and had great awards - except one thing, later - and quite the buffet of tasty fruits and drinks at the end - I would highly suggest more people run this race. Back to the report... 4-5:27 started to slow with the hill, but still trying to gut out a pretty good time. 5-5:26 course flattened out, but even though I was pushing, I knew I was quite a way up and the racers edge had gone even though I tried to trick myself into thinking I needed to gap somebody coming on me. 6-5:47 made the turn off the highway and into Kanab and the breeze that had been swirling and slowing me a little turned into a gale (no not SLC again!), at the same time I got a killer side-ache and about doubled over while facing the toughest section of the course (not killer uphill, but again steady climb). Lost some time here, but what can you do. .2-5:45(pace). Course measured very accurate on the Garmin (6.17). Bill came cruising in for a good 2nd and Kendrick a solid 5th overall. Finished with a 3.25 cooldown. (Ohana 42.05) (Stratus 409.3) Fun race, and I was pleased with how I did. Still room for improvement, but a good one overall. Glad to get the win and make it a Southern Utah race sweep for the Holt boys today (James won the Cotton Days 10K)! Got a big ol' rock thing for first and a river trip down Catarack (sp?) Canyon outside of Moab ($1000 value), but I would rather have won the $200 they gave out last year. Not to be ungrateful, but to go on this, I would have to pay another $1000 for at least my wife to go (I thought it was a trip for 4, but I misunderstood). So if anyone out there is planning on taking a river trip contact me and I give you a good deal!

AM - 8 Green Springs with extensions. A little fatigued - not as good a run as last week. I will try and get a solid week in even with State Track. That means probably a little bit early in the week. (Landreth 128.5) afternoon - 9.5. 2 mile DI loop with team to warm up. Then they did their 4's. After I did a big loop to get the legs moving again and went into my workout (200,400,600,800,1000 w/ equal jog distance to run between each). 200-33.45, 400-1:09 felt pretty good about the 2 and 4 but maybe overdid it a little and got pretty spent, 600-1:54, 800-2:39, 1000-3:25. Then I got home and did 2.5 more on the treadmill to finish the cooldown. (Stratus red 309.5) I spent some time reading what I had done last year while I was in this phase because I feel like I am not doing very well right now. Unfortunately, I am right. Last year I was running quite a bit faster. 200's (sets of 10+) at 31 and 32's. 400's (sets of 12-16) at 1:16's. The turnover I used to have just isn't there anymore - even in just a year I feel it slipping.
| |
| | afternoon - 12 River Trail. Not the best of runs. Started off with the boys team and they turned back after awhile. Then I just kept trodding along. Hopefully the end of two stressful and time consuming things (school and track) will get me mentally and physically back into the groove. (Cumulus blue 192) |
| |
AM - 8 Middleton. Forced myself to get up. My mind and body just aren't into it right now. A change will be good. (Cumulus silver 472.62) afternoon - 6.25 Foremaster with Austin and Jeffrey. It was pretty hot, and I am not used to it. (Stratus 415.55)
| |
AM - 15 Fields run. Pretty nice run mostly because it is so nice to run in the mornings in SG in the Spring. Temps are perfect, little traffic, just really nice. To bad my running isn't as nice! But I think the longer run today and getting back into some longer ones will do me some good. (Landreth 143.5)
afternoon - 8.75 (I think) went with Austin from Lehi HS into American Fork and did a little tour of the area. A pretty nice little run. (Stratus red 318.25)
| |
PM - 13.50 Lehi to near Point of the Mountain by way of Redwood and back through some fields. Actually not a bad little run. Pretty eventful however. Saw all sorts of wildlife, including 8 deer, a wretched pig farm, and rabid dogs that wanted to eat me alive. But it is always needed to go out and run after the first day of state track and just get away from it. Ruth did awesome and won the 1600, but then we had a couple disappointments - oh well, that's life. I probably won't get out tomorrow. (Stratus red 331.75)
| |
| | 2nd day of state track. No run. Goals for next week: It is time to get real again. I will be entering a Speed Phase for the next 1 1/2 months (an idea I have been toying with in my training for the past while). Mileage for this phase will be between 85-100 with 2 days of hard speed stuff. This is based upon what I guess might be called the Kenyan model where after a long base building period (this past winter) the athlete switches to a 6 week speed phase with 2 hard speed workouts/week then transitions into a marathon specific phase for about 8-10 weeks and then the taper. This idea follows a lot of my own personal philosophy that to run a fast marathon you have to be able to run fast in the first place and then teach yourself to translate that into marathon specific running. We'll see how it goes. |
| |
AM - 10 Wendy's. Decent little run today. Let's see what happens today. (Cumulus silver 482.65)
afternoon - 6x400's. Warmed up (although I shouldn't need to use that phrase as it was 105 when I stepped out of school!) with the PVMS run 2.5. Got back to the school to see that our track was starting to get torn up - we are getting a new one this summer, and I guess there are getting started right away - so I ran as the grader stripped the layers of track up. As it was so hot (black track and artificial turf field probably made it well over 130 down on the track) I planned on just doing 6 or so. 1-1:15, 2-1:16, 3-1:18 then I got a quick drink and rest time went from 1:00 to 2:00 between 3 and 4, 4-1:15, 5-1:18, 6-1:22. The heat was pretty intense and although I think I could have probably made it up to 10 or so they would have all been 1:20 or so and I might have dropped on the track (I've had heat exhaustion, even heat stroke, too many times). So I figured that was enough and jogged 2 big loops to round out the 6 mile workout. Although the times weren't stellar, I felt better than the past few speed workouts. The legs felt more fluid, like they were actually eating up ground, instead of fighting every step. (Landreth 153.5)
Also ran in the pool for about 5 minutes (no watch/official time). I am going to do this throughout the summer, and I just wanted to see how it felt. I was difficult and got me breathing decently. I think I will get a better hand of the form as I practice it more. From now on, I will just label it as Pool Run - (time)5 min.
I just realized the 50K is this weekend not next so I changed a couple things around for the week, but no big deal - I am not really racing at all, just going for a 31 mile run! Another side note: I tried on Hayden's toe-shoes (whatever they are called) at state track. They have an interesting feel. It would be nice to have a pair so as to not have to worry about stickers and stuff on the grass, but I need another pair of trainers first. So maybe someday.
| |
AM - 8 Middleton. Not a bad little run, but I was a little sore from yesterday's speed in the heat and the swimming I did yesterday. (Stratus -8 afternoon - 8 Parkway. Another burner, but Austin and I decided to brave the heat. We carried water and hit all the fountains along the way. Now I feel a bit drained. Looking forward to cooler weather tomorrow. (Cumulus blue -8 Pool Running - 5 min.
| |
AM - 10 Junction. First time in a long time I ran out to the Junction. I was a bit tired and trashed. I am not sure if my hammies are wasted because of the heat or the pool running (I think a bit of both). (Stratus red 341.75)
early afternoon - 8 River Run. It was 10+ degrees cooler this afternoon than at 5:00 this morning! It was a much needed break. My legs are still pretty drained and sore. Running is fine, but it does scare me a little for this weekend's long run. (Cumulus red 532)
| |
AM - 8 Green Springs w/ extensions. Very nice weather. Left knee has still been giving me fits, so I wintercrested and took some IB last night and this morning. No pain during the run. It is just after that it gets very tight and sore. (Cumulus blue 200) evening - 7 Club Run. Hadn't been to club for a long time, so it was nice to catch up with Mike and Dustin. Everyone else ditched us. Worked on the legs with the massager for a long time when I got home to try and get the soreness out. (Stratus 422.55)
| |
| |
AM - 10 Wendy's. Another solid run - nothing great, nothing bad. Knee is feeling a little better, so is quad, need to stay on top of them though. (Stratus red 351.75) afternoon - 5 Parkway. Temps were almost cold, very nice. At the end picked up the pace a little to try and beat the rain that finally showed up. (Cumulus blue 205)

Red Mountain 50K (31 Miles) 03:30:31, Place overall: 2
AM - Holy crap... what a neat experience. This run was one of the reasons I love running. Up very early to hit the bus up to Central. We were told the rains had made the trail section a bit wet (but it turned out to not be bad at all). Also, the overcast skies made for some pretty dark running. The race organizers tried there best, however, by having a 4-wheeler right behind us, so we could see a little. A little chilly at the start, but not really too bad - low 40's. Race started off with a guy who I later learn is Shawn Martin (brother of Theo and Tim Martin, All-Americans from NAU and Page, AZ) and he is a pretty good runner in his own right, some other guy, and myself. My plan coming into the race, and throughout, was too make sure I DIDN'T race; instead make it a good long run, so I can run well throughout the next couple weeks of training and don't have to recover. So that thought dictated how I ran. About 4 miles into the race, we hit a series of masterful hills along the powerline trail going out of Central. The other guy had nothing on the hills and I just sat right behind Shawn. My mind, however, kept going back to racing since I was right with him, so I stopped at the aide station around 7 and took a gel and let Shawn pull away. As I got going again, I kind of closed the gap. I was having a lot of fun running on this trail/dirt road and subsequently closed the gap and found myself only 30 meters back. So at around 9 I stopped at the aide station and shot the breeze for a couple minutes with an old elementary teacher Mr. Empey. So now Shawn is way up and I can just relax. The views were amazing and the fog was just rolling off the hills. Coming off 12 and onto the paved section of the course, I once again caught Shawn who was going the shoe exchange (I didn't change shoes). So I pulled up on him by about maybe 20 seconds. At this point, I was just rolling down through toward Gunlock. I was caught by Shawn and we just settled into an awesome rhythm. We talked for probably 6 miles and the times just kept getting quicker - down to 6:00 (much quicker than planned). So I told Shawn to just keep on rolling and I held up at another aide station. Then I stopped up at the next one. It was kind of funny, the volunteers didn't understand why I was just stopping and talking and the leader was pulling away! Anyway after Shawn was long gone, I just kept it moving. Around 24 my parents were at the junction of the highway to Mesquite and Gunlock. I chatted with them for a minute and notice I was starting to tighten up, so on I went. The last section of the race is essentially the same as the River 1/2 that kind of ate me up last Sept. Although I was starting to tighten and lose it, I felt better about my running this time than then. The course had a little twist at the end with a loop around a few blocks to add the last mile that was kind of a pain. And at that time, I really just wanted to be done. But on a run this long, I think anyone would really just want to be done. Finished up by meeting all my goals. I ran solidly, had a lot of fun, enjoyed the scenery, and I think I'll be able to bounce back next week (knock on wood). I entertained myself by singing random notes as I went down through the river bottoms around 23 when I was pretty bored, and had a victory cheer for myself w/ help from the volunteers at 27 when I told them I was now running the longest I ever had! Today was the kind of day that I think could have been a pretty solid sub 2:30 day. I actually went through the marathon at 2:58 (and that included the much tougher/slower trail section). Fun stuff! (Landreth 184.5)
| |
AM - 10.25 Millcreek Trail. Went down and got James and we ran up the trail to the highest water pump. The run was amazing. The temps were great and there was a light little sprinkle. No wildlife however. (Cumulus silver 492.9) afternoon - 9 Coral Canyon by Grapevine Springs w/ 1 mile barefoot grass running at Highland Park. Can't complain at all about these temps. I wish every summer afternoon run was at 75 degrees, but it looks like it is all coming to an end soon. (Cumulus red 540; most I have ever recorded putting on a shoe, it is still feeling good and holding up well)
| |
AM - 10.25 Washington Loop then joined James for Dogpound. Legs were a bit more tired today than yesterday. The whole run ave. was only 8:00. But that's what the legs had. (Cumulus blue 215.25) afternoon - 6.65 Dino Tracks. Still nice out, but starting to warm up. Dip in the pool after was quite refreshing. Still some residual fatigue in the legs. (191.15)
Pool Running - 10 minutes. Earlier in afternoon, before afternoon run. Twice as long as both other times. Getting the hang of it. Noticed that the faster I went, the more I stayed up on top of the water.
| |
AM - 10.1 Parkway with James and then Washington Loop with a little added up into Green Springs. Still feeling and running pretty slow. Hopefully it will start to come around a little by the end of the week. (Stratus red 361.85)
afternoon - 9.25 Grapevine Springs/West Ledge/Highland Park with 5 barefoot grass striders and another few laps around the park to hit 1.5 barefoot. A bit breezy which kept the temp very bareable. Legs seemed like they are about to break through the fatigue. (Cumulus blue 223) Pool Running - 10 min. this afternoon
| |
AM - Washington Loop w/ James and then Sandberg's Pond. Although I am feeling a little less fatigued in the legs, I am very tired from the mileage this week. Subsequently, I still haven't broken an 8:00 min. ave. since the 50K. Kind of crappy, but it is coming around. (Stratus 431.6) evening - 10.5 Club Run. Although I didn't feel that fast (and actually it wasn't), this was the first run all week to go under 8:00 - 7:13 ave. So that is a good sign. (Cumulus blue 233.5)
| |
AM - 10.05 Chipman Hill w/ James and then around Urie to finish off the 10. Pretty sleepy tired this morning. Was mostly asleep on the run down to James'. (Landreth 201.2) afternoon - 8.5 Highland via Prospector. Ran naked, but ran this one a few weeks ago so I looked back at the mileage. The spring wind we've had has really helped make the afternoon runs bearable even enjoyable. (cumulus red 548.5)
| |
AM - 17.25 Snow Canyon/SGM run. Good group run this morning. Ran from store and climbed up through Snow Canyon then down the course back to the store. Ave was 7:13 again. So finally another one under 8:00. Logan was nice enough to just sit back with me as we watched the Bull pull away. Got some blisters on my left pinkie toe - not sure what happened there. But a good end to the week. Got some good solid mileage and at the same time let the legs recover from the 50K. (Stratus 448.85) Goals for next week: Hit mileage right at 100. Bring in a couple speedier workouts with 300's on Monday and 800's on Weds. to prep for the upcoming 10K / 1/2 marathon season. Keep working my core exercises each day and do at least 3 days of pool running.
| |
| |
AM - 10 Middleton w/ James and Bill who joined us for most of the run. Then Telegraph Loop to finish off the 10. Another run under 8:00; maybe the legs are on their way back. (Cumulus silver 502.9) afternoon - 6x300. Went over to Dixie College since PVHS track is no longer. Warmed up 4 by going out by the Temple and then the last 2ish of the SGM course. Then got into the workout. 1-57 actually ran meters longer because the track is marked weird, but then I figured it out. 2-54, 3-6 all 55. Ran 1:45 jog 300m between. Felt very solid; like I could do them all day at that pace, but I really couldn't do them any faster. Finished with a .5 cool. Probably should have done more, but I had already gone over my planned mileage (16) for the day. I was pleased with the workout and felt like I should be doing more repeats and more mileage - I guess that is a good thing. (Stratus 455.35)
| |
AM - 11.05 Green Springs w/ James. XC practice started so I ran with the 3 mile group and then home. A little sore in the hips from yesterday I would imagine. (Landreth 212.25) afternoon - 5 Washington Parkway. The heat hasn't killed me yet. (Cumulus red 553.5) Pool Running - 15 minutes. I took my heart rate just as I finished to see where it was from the workout. It was at 130/minute, so I guess it gets it up there a bit.
| |
AM - 8.15 Dogpound w/ James and then up by Rich's to hit this morning's goal mileage. Didn't feel that great today. Some days feel stronger than others. (Stratus red 370) afternoon - 6x1/2miles (8.65). And then, some afternoons are better than mornings! Ran out to King's Row to run my 1/2's. Thought I had waited out the storm front and wind, but it just got worse, much worse as I went out there. The wind was ripping and throwing sand all over me (into me, more like it). With the help of a friendly cross-wind, I knew I had the chance of a strong workout. 1-2:24, felt good, was on pace for 2:20 for over .30 but it scared me thinking of doing six so I let myself back off. 2-2:20, thought I should try for that 2:20 and hit it. 3-2:13 Felt really good, the rest was a full 1/2 back to my start since the wind was blowing and throwing off any plan to only do the 2:30 recovery planned, but it was what needed to be done in the conditions. 4-2:11, probably the best one. I felt great; faster than I have felt in a LONG time. 5-2:13 Again felt solid. 6-2:09 don't know how many times these old legs have a sub 2:10 left in them, so I went for it and did it! It was much nicer doing these 1/2's on a road than on a track. The wind did help some, but more often than not, it was blowing almost straight across, I just had a good workout today with good leg turn-over and drive. (Cumulus blue 242.15)
| |
| |
AM - 8.55 Washington Loop w/ James and then Sandberg's Pond. Pretty uneventful. A bit hard on the joints (hips/knees) this morning. (Landreth 220.8) Pool Running - 15 mins. evening - 8.5 Club run on Chuckwalla Trail. I was very, very slow. Legs were pretty much just spent. (Cumulus silver 511.4)
| |
| |
AM - 14.6 Parkway w/ James then a couple more around Washington before practice and then up into upper Green Springs. I am pretty well spent. Although for a short while around miles 7-10 I actually felt pretty good. Hopefully I feel a little better tomorrow so I can have a short at a PR. (Stratus red 384.6) afternoon - 5.7 went out to Sienna Hills Park and ran two miles barefoot. Felt good. Hard to believe that just two days ago it was snowing on the mountain and I could see my breath in the morning. It is warming back up toward normal. (Cumulus red 557.2)
| Race: |
Speedster 10K (6.4 Miles) 00:36:29, Place overall: 1 | | morning - Well I had good intentions with this race, but shut it down pretty quick. Started with a warmup of the loop the course (10K did the loop twice) - noticed that the course was measuring long. My plan for the race was run hard from the gun and hold whatever I could. I also decided to run with just my watch, not the garmin; I'm not sure why, I just though it might help me focus on racing instead of all the pacing... First mile was 5:04, a little quick, but not really if that's where I am going to be eventually, and I wasn't working that hard really. Stayed about the same distance behind the 5K leader throughout the first half of the race. Then coming close to the turnaround, I just shut it down. I didn't feel as quick as I knew I needed to be to get a good time, the race had no mileage markers for the 10K (besides mile 1) so I couldn't even get splits, and there was no racing going on to make me drive. So I just figured to keep it steady and win, but live to run hard next week at Summer Games, which is what I am going for anyway. Ran James in, he ran well and got 4th, then cooled down with a few of the guys. Nothing to thrilling. (Stratus 459.8) (Ohana 48.95) Hit goals pretty good for the week. Great 1/2's and right on with the mileage. Didn't hit the water as much as I wanted and missed a couple core workouts. Goals for next week: Be fresh and determined for Summer Games and let that lead me right into WBR. Mileage should be around high 80's this week.
| |
| |
AM - 10.15 Fields run w/ James and then 5x100 barefoot grass striders and around back home. Okay run, not too quick, hips were hurting a little. I think I need to start gack hitting some squats to strengthen through the legs and hip (I'll wait until after WBR). (Landreth 230.15) afternoon - 6x200's (7.05). Warm Springs and then to Wash. Elem. to run on the little 200 track. Measured it a couple times to get the right marks (it is just a little short - with very tight turns). 1 and 6 were 31's. 2-5 were 32's. Felt good and quick; breathing hard and moving legs quick. Ran 2:00 jog between. Then jogged 1 1/2 home as cool down. (Cumulus blue 249.2) Pool Running - 10 min.
| |
AM - 12.55 Middleton w/ James and then Parkway w/ XC. Picked up the pace pretty good for about 1 1/2 miles and then no carb drink or anything trying to deplete for the day to cram for the next two days. I really want to run fast at USG. (Stratus red 397.15) afternoon - 6.55 Highland. The heat is on! Tried to run pretty hard down Highland and the ridge for 1 3/4 miles, but wasn't quite a smooth or quick as the 1 1/2 this morning. (cumulus red 563.75) Pool Running - 10 min.
| |
| |
AM - 10.1 Dogpound w/ James and then just weaved around Washington. I usually prefer if people say I run - not jog. But today would have a hard time even being called the latter. (Stratus 469.9) afternoon - 6 Grapevine out and back. Pretty heinous situation again. Just tired and unenthusiastic. My neck is also kinked and giving me a bit of a struggle. (Cumulus silver 517.4)
| |
AM - 8 Parkway w/ James and then around Washington for the 8. Woke up feeling much better. Wasn't nearly as tired, neck/back felt much improved, and I wanted to run. All that plus the 50 degree weather made for a much better run than yesterday. (Landreth 238.15) evening - 3 Lower Grapevine. Just a chill little run. Got a blood blister right on the ball of my foot sometime today and it was giving me some problems. So I drained it and although it still has a little pain, it is feeling like it shouldn't be a problem tomorrow. (Cumulus silver-3

Utah Summer Games 10K (6.2 Miles) 00:31:15, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1
morning - Got up to Cedar and warmed up with just over two miles and caught the bus up to the start. Goals going into the race - I really thought I had a shot at breaking 30 on this race. I knew it would be very tough, but it just felt like it was there. Lined up with Hayden and kind of told him the plan. We took off and right off the bat, I could just tell it wasn't there. When I finished getting schooled by a high schooler I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the deal was. I went off pouting and didn't watch my bro and bros finish (sorry guys) then went for a run trying to find the Razorback trail up by the golf course - my favorite run when I was up at SUU, found the bottom part of it, but decided I had better get back to the awards and stuff and showed up just in time (4.05 cooldown). During the run I started to feel a little better about it, but still some frustrations. I would be lying if I said that it didn't bug me that Hayden schooled me, but its not only that. Hayden is a stud and ran awesome today - and really he just stuck to the plan way better than I did; some days other runners are just better than you. What I was having a harder time with is that I just don't have any guts - really it was pathetic. I let the exact same thing happen to me last year; Joe pulled away from me at the exact same spot as Hayden did this year. Of course, I am also bothered about not running anywhere close to my goal. I guess you can say get over it, but I think it will be on my mind for a few days at least. I told Hayden that he should be replacing me on the WBR and I really feel that way. Here's the run down. Last year's split in parenthesis.
1-4:46 (4:43) started pretty solid, wanted 4:40, but I was too chill. 2-4:50 (4:49) wanted another 4:40, but it wasn't there. 3-5:03 (4:56) I didn't want anything over 5:00 especially on only the 3rd. blah. Hayden gapped me a little and I just could work back to where I needed to be. Why didn't I just close the gap back up? 4-5:06 (5:07) Wanted 4:50, I new sub 30 was long gone by now, but trying to be positive and thinking I was still near last year's time if I ran a better final two. 5-5:15 (5:30) A glimmer of hope, I new I had gone 5:30 last year. This is where I was supposed to gain huge time, gained a little. 6-5:19 (5:25) Again I was supposed to chunk off 20+ seconds here and only got a couple. I really didn't even go after Hayden like I should have. I was content in 2nd. I used to never be this way. .2-:59, 5:08 pace (:28, 4:10 pace(?)/ but last year the race was just .13 instead of the full .2; start was moved a little this year) Last year I dug like a mad man to get 31:00, this year I just repeatedly swore under my breathe and cruised in. It is funny how the two races produced such similar results with such different reactions. Last year I was flying SO high after the race; I couldn't contain how excited I was. This year I was completely negative. It is going away some though - the run after, thinking, and writing about it is helping me feel a little better. Congrats to everyone on great races: Hayden especially, PV runners good job, Bull you are really flying right now. Good job James, Dustin, and Ryan and everyone else. (Cumulus silver 526.25) (Ohana 55.9) afternoon - 8.35 Sand Hill Trail. Took it real easy and just enjoyed being out in the desert. Stopped and enjoyed the views multiple times. An enjoyable and relaxing run. (Stratus 478.25)
| | morning - from Leeds down, up Highland and across the upper section of Parkway with Bill and Clyde. A nice run. Pace was a solid 7:10 for not pushing it at all, which was good because I really didn't have it in me - just finishing off the week. (Cumulus blue 265.2) Did pretty good for the week. Mileage was just a little high. Race wasn't perfect, but not much in life is; you just learn from it and move on. Goals for next week: Cut the mileage back again so I can be fresher for WBR and not be weak link on the team! Have fun up there! | |

AM - 16 Green Springs and around Scenic and then Middleton w/ James. Not really a bad run at all. Legs were just a little sore on the quads, but worked out okay. Temps are a bit warmer in the morning now than the last few weeks. Pool Running - 10 min. Tried something a little different; most literature (and people) to make this more effective, try doing a fartlek style workout with a certain amount of time hard/easy. So today I went 1 minute easy/hard. PM - 8.4 Club run at DC. Went around the trails and hit a 2 mile tempo section on the way back. Put them in at 5:17 and 5:35. Not too bad, tried to stay back a little when the group took off, so I was mostly working on my own. And the legs started to lose it for most of it, especially the 2nd mile, but just tried to keep it somewhat together. A good fun workout. (Stratus red 405.65)

AM - 11.35 Green Springs w/ James and the 3 at XC practice. I was pretty well spent this morning with the short turn-around between runs last night and this morning, the bigger mileage yesterday, the tempo last night, and getting up earlier with a sick little girl. So I struggled through the run with James and then stayed in the back of the pack at practice. (Stratus 489.6) Pool Running - 10 min 1on/1off afternoon - 5.5 Treadmill time has begun (sad day). Started off very easy for the first mile and a half. Then just let it roll at 7:30. Going to have to get used to it again - treadmilling. Was planning on 5, but was in the middle of watching the world record women's 5000, so I just kept going as she did it. (Cumulus red 569.25)
| |
AM - 9.05 lower Grapevine down Highland w/ James and then a couple in Dogtown. Knee pain I had yesterday showed up a little today as well. (Landreth 247.2) afternoon - 5.6 TM. Again started off very easy, but then got into the 7:30 easy pace a bit quicker. Struggled through 3 miles mentally and then the women's 3000 Steeple, men's and women's 800, and men's mile came on the track meet I was watching and things went smoother and again I went just a tad farther than planned. (Stratus 495.2)

AM - 8.25 Fields w/ James. Temps just a tad cooler this morning - perfect! Got a new pair of Asics Stratus 2.1 (black and yellow - girls thought they looked like bees, so that's their name) and Asics Cumulus 10 (white) yesterday from the St. George Running Center. Wore the Stratus this morning. It has been a while since I've had new shoes - they felt great. Then go to help take care of 2 sickos now - and get ready to go to WBR. (Stratus Bee - 8.25) evening - 5 in Orem w/ WBR crew. Felt horrid. Subway and the flu throughout the family made this a very difficult jog. I really hope things calm down for WBR. (Stratus 500.2)

Wasatch Back Relay (Legs 8,20,32) (3.36 Miles) 00:19:05, Place overall: 2 | | morning - 4 in Orem w/ WBR crew. Warm up for the day. Didn't sleep well at all. All insides having issues still. Now off to Logan. (Stratus 504.2) PM - WBR LEG 8 (my first): 1.3 Warm up. Felt ready to go and see if we could chip away at the lead a little. This was my shortest leg, so I wanted to run it well, but at the same time save some for the next two longer/more difficult legs. (Stratus 505.5) 3.36 Leg (19:05 - 5:41 ave.) 1-5:20 Went out pretty quick. An easy mile and I felt a little antsy as well. 2-5:33 Slowed a little, probably more than I should have, but it was a long gradual slope through the end of the leg. 3-5:59 Got kind of tired in here. I was a little more worried about the footing on a very pothole filled road than running as fast as I should have been. .36-6:06 pace. Just kind of cruised it on in. .8 cool down (Ohana 60.06)

Wasatch Back Relay (Legs 8,20,32) (13.07 Miles) 01:15:19, Place overall: 2
total warm and cool for these two legs was only 1.25 miles. Way too little. But I wasn't really into it as much as I should have been - and then I really didn't cool down at all. early AM - (Leg 20 - 2nd - 5:28 pace) Started my 2nd leg at 2:11 AM. It was a 7.07 mile run; with about 5 with a nice steady downhill section and 2 with a gradual up to it. Never really felt like I was racing in this section (should/could) have gone quicker; however, it was my funnest section. This is where I recorded 44 kills! Basically I just had a steady stream of people to go get the whole run. But once I reached 32 I thought I was done. Then coming across the overpass I caught a grouping of 6 people and pulled up to 38. I was thinking how cool it would be to get 40, but I saw no one in sight and I knew the end was coming soon. Then, as I rounded a corner about .5 out from the end of my leg, I saw another large grouping of people. At first I didn't think I could get them, but as I started to accelerate a little, I just started eating up ground on them (I am sure they were hitting some amazing pace!). With just about .1-.05 left in the leg, I zoomed by them all, eating up six more. I yelled at Adam, as he didn't know I was coming in and then let out a "44!" Like I said, I really didn't run that fast, but it was fun to catch that many people. 1-5:20 another 5:20 first mile, but this time I was just easing into it. 2-5:14 I start to let the downhill take me a little. 3-5:13 still just moving along. 4-5:29 a little more of a flat section. I only looked at my watch on the mile
splits on this leg and mostly just tried to use it as a solid practice
for downhill - with chest up and a good lean out of the bucket. 5-5:22 Tried to keep it decent on the last section of down and flat. 6-5:48 Started gradual uphill through town. 7-5:45 The goal to hit 40 kept me on pace through this uphill section. .07-Just finishing it out. Forgot to turn off my watch, so it ran for a few as I talked so my time was off a little. morning - (Leg 32 - 3rd -6:06 pace) 3rd leg started at 8:11. This was a more difficult leg, but not killer. A flat mile and then about 5 weaving climbing miles to the base of the big climbs. Throughout the run, I was thinking that it was rather cruel to end a relay on a leg like this for an old man; but I really didn't want to complain, knowing what Seth and Adam had coming up. Didn't warm up hardly at all, just figured I would do it on the run. I wasn't out to break anything (records or me). 1-5:58 too slow, but I was stiff. 2-5:58 Had passed four people and it looked like that might be it for the run, so I was just kind of going. 3-6:07 I had kind of resigned myself to the idea that I would just hit 6:00's through the rest. Did end up catch a few more throughout the run though. 4-6:11 I am almost done with this junk! 5-6:10 1 more mile! 6-6:11 I actually worked this one pretty hard to catch my 10th person. WBR Finished! I don't know if I will ever do a really again (or at least for a long time). They really beat me up, and I have a hard time coming back to back to back. They are for the young. Happy to see my boys team get 10th overall and my mixed team pull off a solid run and get top 150. Great job guys and gals! (Stratus 506.8) (Ohana 73.13)

AM - 18 Green Springs then Middleton w/ James where we bumped into Clyde and then finished off 3 w/ Clyde on the Parkway and over at Maverick. Run wasn't quick, but it wasn't the worst thing ever. A little fatigue started to set in by the last 5ish and I kind of wanted to be done. But now I am happy that I finished it up. (Cumulus white 18) Pool Running - 15 min (1on/1off) PM - 8.75 Club run from DC to Webb Hill to measure hill workouts. Clyde, Logan, and I were all pretty spent, so it was nice to just keep it real chill and enjoy a few bugs. (Stratus red 414.5)

AM - 12.15 Green Springs w/ James and then XC up to Tortoise Fence. Not so fast, still recovering. (Stratus Bee 20.4) afternoon - 6x400's (6.65). Very Hot! Because of the heat and still not having a lot of juice, I wondered if I should do these. But I figured if I kept cool about the times, I should try them out. Jogged over to Pine Valley Townhomes road and dropped off my waters (1 at the top where 1,3,5 would start and 1 at the bottom where 2,4,6 started). Then I went up the Parkway and drenched my singlet - it felt great - and went back around to do the repeats. Kept a level head about the times and just tried to keep solid form and good turnover. 1-1:18, 2-4-1:19, 5-1:17, 6-1:19. Then just smiled that I had made it through the heat and jogged on home. (Cumulus silver 532.9)

AM - 10.15 Fields w/ James and then around Washington just a little to hit the 10. Pretty sleepy this morning, but everything is feeling pretty good. Today's runs can be as slow as I feel so that is nice. (Cumulus white 28.15) afternoon - 6.7 Highland lower Grapevine. Beat the heat! It was only 99 when I finished up. Kept it very easy and relaxed with water stops. (Cumulus blue 287.9) Pool Running - 20 min (1off/1on) I am getting pretty decent at this, especially the hard sections; and can really feel it working me. Is it helping? I imagine it would have to a little, and it is fun so...
| |
AM - 11.10 Highland Lower Grapevine w/ James and then XC went out the same way, I just went 3 with the middle group. (Landreth 258.3) Pool Running - 20 mins (1off/1on) PM - 10.2 Club Run. Nice to keep it fairly easy. Hopefully I start to feel a little quicker here next week. (Stratus red 424.7)

| | AM - 8.1 Around Washington easy and then XC practice Parkway with Ryan and Ashley. Pretty glad today is a bit less than the rest of the week. (Cumulus white 36.25) afternoon - 6 Treadmill. Pretty crappy. Had a 1200 workout planned, but just as I finished up swimming today, my left hip really locked up and was giving me some problems. Add to that, I had to run on the TM today. Starting out, I wasn't even sure if I was going to be able to go at all. 8:34 pace was giving me major problems, so I took it down to 10:00 pace and the hip felt pain free. So I worked it up slowly and then stretched good. Then I decided I should try the 5:00 pace for the 1200's and immediately the pain shot back and I backed it right off. Went back to the 10:00 pace and let it just ease and finished with 3 miles at 7:30 pace. Not very happy about it. (Cumulus red 575.25) | |

AM- 20 Utah Hill - 10 up and 10 down. Ran with Logan, Bill, Marcie J., and Hayden. What a great workout. Climb over 2300 feet from 2400 to over 4700 feet in the first 10 and then finish with a strong 10 to the bottom. Overall ave. was 6:57 with the important part being the last 8 that were all right in the 5:30 range, some just below, the last couple just above. I had to really work to keep on it. Watched Logan really stick his last section and pull away from me, but it kept me more focused as that is where I am aiming to be. Great thing about this run is that after doing it, I know I am a better runner because of it! (Stratus Bee 40.4) Week was a little mixed. Good recovery, but I allowed too many extra miles to sneak in (a couple here, a little longer there) and it added up to be some of the problem that led to a poor workout yesterday afternoon. But today made me more positive. Goals for next week: Stick closer to planned schedule. Two weeks left of this quicker phase, so I need 400's and 1200's to round it out (so I won't really kill on the hills Monday). Keep on three or four days of pool running. And keep hitting core workouts each day (I think it is making some difference).
| |
AM - 17 Factory Stores w/ James and then XC Green Spring 7 and through Cottonmill East to hit the 17. Felt pretty solid. Ready for a great week and had a lot of fun running w/ my Varsity boys. (Cumulus white 53.25)
Pool Running - 20 min (1off/1on)
PM - 3xWebb Hill w/ Club (10). Felt pretty solid heading over. Took the first one w/o everyone else as they stretched and I ran maybe a little too conservative, but it helped me survive and get solid pushes on the next two. Very happy about this workout. 1-8:01, 2-7:28, 3-7:31. (Cumulus blue 297.9)
| |
AM - 13 Green Springs w/ James and then XC up to top of Highland w/ Stefani. Not as sore or as tired from last night as I thought I might be (but it usual catches up to me two days after). (Landreth 271.3)
afternoon - 6 Sienna Hills Park with some barefoot running. Ran over 1.5 miles and then did 5x barefoot grass striders and finished off with 2 solid barefoot miles right at 7:00 pace (ususally go a bit slower barefoot, so I tried to actually keep running instead of the usual jog). Then 1.5 home in the heat. (Cumulus red 578.25)
Pool Running - 20 min (1off/1on)
| |
AM - 14 I don't remember what James and I ran, but I am sure it was good. Then XC and I ran dogpound w/ Ashley and ended with 5 barefoot grass striders (Stratus Bee 53.4)
afternoon - 6 Parkway with an extension. (Stratus 512.8) |
| |
AM - 12.55 Again I don't remember what James and I ran (this is why you should blog everyday, or have a computer that will let you!). Then XC Parkway nice and easy with most of the team running together. (Stratus red 437.25)
PM - 10.2 Club run. Good club run tonight. The heat was on, but we kept it nice and cool and enjoyed it. Quick turnaround for tomorrow as we head up to Enterprise down to Veyo on the dirt for the 4th of July. (63.45) |

Steven Abraham Lincoln Hooper Memorial (17.35 Miles) 02:07:24, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1
AM - 2nd Annual Steven Abraham Lincoln Hooper Memorial 17.35 Mile Fun Run -
Things really went well this year. The race directors had pretty much everything right on the ball: the distance was dead on, the awards were spectacular, the hydration more plentiful, the minor adjustment in start time made a huge difference, and the oraganizers were able to arrange the temps to stay down just enough to the finish to make it enjoyable, and of course, the course is one of the most scenic and spectacular pieces of trailrunning in the western United States. There were a few flaws as always: in a Twilight Zone like moment, we traveled up into Enterprise twice while only leaving it once, Logan yelling out the window at rabbits to move and Bill sleeping at the wheel also added some intrigue.
Despite all this, the field was smaller than last year. The WildBull's goal was to finish in one piece, Logan's goal was to avoid getting eaten by a mountain lion, and my goal, of course, was to crush the field like always and destroy any hope they may have had of taking home the crown. The run moved uneventfully UP mountain passes, by amazing views, and near dead decaying cows until at mile 13 the Bull made a bold move to the lead. Logan and I kept relaxed and pulled him in within the mile. At this point, the race became an eery predecesour to the famous hotdog eating contest to follow later in the day. The great Loganashy broke away and took a slim lead as we neared the final mile. He would not be beat, he must gain the crown abdicated by Clyde "Superfly" Behunin. Davey Holt stayed steady behind the intimidating Santa Claran and in the final 1/4 mile pulled a sneak attack to end dead even at the finish. A monumental moment in the history of this race; a tie! As Billy finished, we slid into our prize - 15 minutes soaking in the freezing tributary stream of the Santa Clara River. (Landreth 288.65)
As the only 2 time finisher of this classic race, I am awarding myself with the Thomas Jefferson Lifetime Achievement Award for Dedication and Commitment to and the Love of Distance Running. It is a very special award that I will hold very dear to my heart.
afternoon - 5.25 Parkway. Had a very short turn around as it was getting hot quick and I wanted a good nap, so I went out and hit a quick 5er to round out the day. (Cumulus silver 538.15)
| |
AM - 20 SGM w/ Logan and Dustin. An amazing way to end the week. We dropped off Marcie and then James and started off on our 20. Both Logan and I didn't think we would be hitting anything too quick, but coming up Winchester I wanted to help Logan hit a solid hill like he has been working on, so we picked it up. Then he just kept going, so I went with him - but it wasn't racing, it was great training together. We hit 5 very solid miles at the end including a 5:08 mile 19 - at the end of a 130+ mile week. (Stratus Bee 73.4)
The whole week, including today has me stoked! I really feel that from last Saturday through to today, I have hit multiple workouts that have made me a much better runner.
Goals for next week: I will hold back a bit and hit 120 miles next week (the 130 was great - It just kind of happened and I really didn't feel all that spent, just a tad this morning until we started moving better, but I need to make sure I don't get injured just going too nuts with it). And I will look to continue to feel very positive with my running.
| |
AM - 18.25 Factory Stores out and back w/ James. Then XC practice to Middleton and a few more miles around Dogtown. Legs are feeling last week a little. (Stratus red 455.5) afternoon - 6.35 Prospector/Church Rocks Trail and then down through Grapevine. (Cumulus red 584.6) Pool Running - 20 min (1off/1on) |
| |
AM - 13.35 Lower Grapevine to Highland w/ James - tried to push the hill to make up for missing Meat Grinders last night (family finally got back into town!). Then XC Dogpound and 5 barefoot grass striders. Was pretty spent. Probably a good thing that I didn't hit hills last night. Hopefully I will get my legs back a little through the week. (Landreth 300.55) afternoon - 6.5 DinoTracks. Nice and warm out. I think I am adjusting to these crazy afternoon runs. (Cumulus silver 544.65) Pool Running - 20 min (1off/1on)
| |
AM - 15.3 Fields w/ James and then XC Dino Tracks. Run slowly got better as I woke up. Legs weren't quite as trashed the last couple days, but still a few runs out from really having much in them. (Stratus 528.1) afternoon - 5 Washington Loop w/ Turtle Creek extension. Not bad only doing 5 this afternoon (1 mile makes a difference in the heat!) - just need to hit 20/day this week, so I was able to cut it down. Although since I stayed in town on the roads instead of going out to the desert, I couldn't count the number of weird looks I got. (Cumulus blue 302.9) Pool Running - 20 min (1off/1on)
| |
| |
AM - 12.7 Green Springs w/ James and then XC team run on the Parkway. Nothing too big of a deal this morning. (Cumulus white 76.15) PM - 10.2 Club Run. Good turnout as I had most of the varsity XC there (running with this group once a week for the rest of the summer will really help them and teach them a lot about running). Pace was solid throughout, but the last 2 or 3 Logan and I did a solid tempo finish; it really hurt, in a good way. (Stratus Bee 83.6)
| |
AM - 12.3 Just the Parkway w/ James since I had to get to XC over in Bloomington Hills. So then XC we ran a 7 down the trail into Bloomington and made a loop up Sugar Leo and under the freeway. The kids (boys V and top JV and Ashley) are all doing very well. I am super excited for them and the team. (Cumulus blue 315.2) afternoon - 5.25 Tortoise Fence. Not as hot out today. If I wasn't so spent, it would have been enjoyable to do a nice 10 out. (Cumulus red 589.85)
| | AM - 20 Bloomington Trailsx2. A pretty good run except for the last 3 or so. Was very humid out this morning and I about lost every ounce of water in my body. By the end, my right quad was just gone (tired, tight, low on fuel), and it cramped up pretty solid on me. I was a little worried it was going to blow, so I eased it in pretty casual like. (Landreth 320.55) Solid week mileage wise. But the body is tired. I am happy for a break next week and excited for Bryce. Goals for next week: Very important - mileage can't be over 90 including the race. Enjoy the taper and recovery of the week. Stick with race plan and be mentally tough throughout. | |
| |
AM - 16 Middleton w/ James and then XC Tortoise Trail up near the top w/ the top Varsity. A good 16 miler with no leg issues from the other day. (Cumulus white 92.15) PM - 9 Bloomington Hills. Went on a little run today instead of Meat Grinders. The temps were great with a little rain coming down; it made it very fun - not to mention Kam being high on life (and Red Bull)! (Stratus 537.1)
| |
AM - 11.85 Green Springs w/ James and then XC went with middle group on a 4+ miler down to Dogpound. Legs a little tired and heavy. (Stratus Bee 95.45) afternoon - 5 on Treadmill. Depletion run before loading tomorrow and Thursday. 1 mile warm up, then went 6:00,5:50,5:40,5:30 for a quarter each, followed by a mile at 5:20, then ended by going back up for a quarter and a mile cool at 6:30. Not too bad, a bit hard to hit a good rhythm on the treadmill; but I decided to do it there to try and focus on the pace and not the heat (even though it isn't horrible out today). Now the real taper. (Cumulus white 97.15) |
| | AM - 10 Bank and back w/ James and then XC I just did Roundabout w/ a few different groups of kids while the Varsity went up to Highland. Maybe one of the worst runs of my life. A very good thought heading into a big race! My legs were like bricks. I dug back into them with the stick when I finished (did 40 mins. of the foam roller on them last night). (Stratus red 465.5) | |
| |
AM - 6.85 Parkway w/ James and then around Washington a little before practice (sent kids on a shorter run - 3 miler - and some ultimate. Felt a lot better this morning. The taper is setting in a little, but still some room to freshen. (Landreth 327.4) PM - 6.8 Club Run. Nice little jaunt around Sunset getting honked at by a record number of people - must have been Bill up front! (Cumulus white 103.95)
| |
AM - 6 Washington Loop w/ Buena Vista extension and then around Cottonmill East w/ James. XC was running Icehouse Trail and I wanted to join them, but not today. (Stratus Bee 101.45) evening - 3.2 Cannonville. Went for a short little shake-out w/ Clyde once we got the camper set up. Race should be good tomorrow. (Stratus 540.3) |
| Race: |
Bryce Canyon 1/2 Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:10:18, Place overall: 5, Place in age division: 1 | | AM - Woke up and got ready and caught the bus to the start of the race. Then hit a 1.05 mile warm up. I think I should have warmed up more. Started off well. Logan took off hard after Brandon Doolin (former CV runner, who ended up running very well), Italia, and a couple gunners. So I was kind of stuck by myself, but just a little. I knew I wanted to hit a quicker first 2 miles than last year, but not as fast a Logan 1-5:24, set up pretty good and I felt pretty decent. 2-5:24, still felt good about how I was starting and looked to close on Logan a little on the downhill as he settled down. 3-4:46, sounds insane, but is the same 3rd mile as last year. I thought it would be quicker, too quick, since I pushed a little to catch up to Logan so I could have him pull me for a little while. 4-4:54, Things are going well as we continue down the drop. 5-4:57, I was very pleased at how I was running time wise. My goal was to hit a solidly quick section here and use the downhill, it backfired on me later. 6-5:03, Logan noticed I was breathing very quick and heavy and advised me to keep it relaxed. I tried to, but it would immediately go back to a struggling lack of rhythm. 7-5:18 Logan took off as we hit the flat (I thought because he knew Vick was right behind us, but he didn't hear him, he was just racing hard). Vick and his buddy passed and it was like a switch went off, I totally lost it all. 8-5:27 I should have been so worried and mentally weak. Seeing a 5:18 and 5:27, I should have realized I was still very solid and recovered back to 5:20 which was the plan. Instead I gave up. Why? From here it all turned crappy. I am kicking myself that I let myself go so bad mentally. 9-5:44 When I should have been making a move on Vick's buddy who was just 30 meters in front of me, I only let myslef focus on how bad I felt. Can't do that! 10-5:39 I should have used my Gu around 6, but I was planning on using it at 8 and by that time my stomach was a mess. I was fighting every step not to puke or lose it, so I didn't dare take it - or any drinks. So by this point, my body was depleted. Another poor racing move on my part. 11-5:46 I did some math and tried to figure out where I was, and decided a solid last 5K would still set me up for something solid. But I didn't push on this mile at all, I was out of it mentally. 12- 5:58 Oh Boy! What was I doing. 13-5:35 Pushed this a little as I took a quick glance and saw Italia closing and not far behind him, Clyde. So I tried to refocus and this is what turned out. .1-(5:05 pace to finish), Obviously, I still had a little there because I hit a solid stride again for the last of 13 and to the finish to solidify my 5th, but I was weak. Crossed in 1:10:18. A little better than last year, so that's good. Still got a little money, so that's a bonus. Another 1:10 (4 or 5 straight now! So it is time to get over that bump) After a few minutes, I jogged out to help James and he was just around the corner, busting it is with a 6 minute PR and a great 1:22! I was way stoked for him. Then James, James, Clyde, Logan, and I went for a 2 mile cool down. (Ohana 89.5) I have mixed emotions about the race as I think about it. The effort: good for part of the race, poor for part - 1st half may have been a little quick and it hurt me later. But how do you break though when you never push the limit? So I tried and it bit me. Mentally: pretty weak. It is always the most frustrating thing to me when I give up mentally. I knew a great time would hurt; I tried to convince my body and mind of this, but I wasn't ready. I think some more solid finishing runs will get me more ready for this. The time: Okay time. Can't yell at it, but I could have easily been so much better. I think about last year though, and realize that I wasn't too pleased with my performance here last year either, but it got me ready to run stronger at Provo and then SGM. So I take from this that I ran a little faster than last year, I have a much stronger base than last year, and with great training partners to push the tempo now the next two months as we hit 100-115 mpw, things are going to be great at St. George!

AM - 8.3 a SORE 4.5 out and back w/ James then a little before practice, finished off with 2 during practice to round it out. Legs really are pretty trashed. But it was a lot harder to start than to keep going. Tried to use the stick and then my usual daily core stuff. (Cumulus blue 323.5) afternoon - 5.7 Sienna Hills Park and 2 miles barefoot running on the grass. I am sure am much more sore than last year after Bryce. This afternoon felt a little better than this morning, however. (Cumulus red 593.55)
Pool Running - 10 mins. easy
| |
AM - 10.25 Green Springs w/ James. Then XC 3 miles up Tortoise Fence ran w/ Austin then Danny. Felt a little better than yesterday. The quads are coming around, but the calves are still a bit tender. (Stratus Bee 111.7)
PM - 5.75 Sienna Hills Park by way of lower Parkway and back. 8x100 grass striders. Feeling noticeably better this afternoon compared to morning. The striders were good and got my legs moving as I worked on having a quick pull-through of the foot. Ave. for run was 7:40, first time under 8 since the race; so legs are showing signs of improvement. (Cumulus Silver 548.85)

AM - 12.15 Fields w/ James and then XC to Sienna Hills (they did some barefooting) and back. The occasional pain I have in the tendons behind the knee was back today in my right leg. I think it is from continued tightness and soreness in my legs. Add to that the fatigue I am still feeling and I am not sure about tomorrows Big Workout. I think I'll be alright though to at least give it a shot. (Cumulus white 116.1) PM - 7.85 Treadmill. Because of some family stuff, I planned on running this evening, but Ally had to go to the doctor for an ear problem and that meant treadmill time. I really struggled to get through it. I do better on the treadmill if I have been running on it a lot; then it seems less tedious. But I haven't been on it much this summer, so it is grinding. But I am sure it is not as bad as Al's ear pain. (Stratus red 473.35)

| | AM - 15.2. Big Workout #19 - 4 mile warmup, 7 Tinman Tempo (6:00), 4 cooldown w/ Clyde and Logan at DC. Started off with the warmup and my body was sending signs of distress. About 100 meters into it, a sharp pain sent through my butt and all around my left leg causing it to give out and forcing me to stumble to stay upright. But I hope it would all work out. Heading back onto the Bloomington Loop we began out Tempo - I was supposed to hit 6:00, and I hoped I could do it (things still aren't really recovered from Bryce. 1-6:03; 2-6:00 the two slowest were down the trail! 3-5:56 pushed harder up the hill around Bloomington and Clyde and Logan pull away a little; 4-5:54 just try to keep focused and not worry about how tired I felt. It was weird, the pace wasn't hard, but my legs just wouldn't respond and move (an oxymoron); 5-5:59; 6-5:51; 7-5:55 worked pretty hard to keep those last few under 6:00 up the trail, but I made it. Then 4 cool. Not a bad workout considering how I felt. It actually gives me a little confidence - although the pace isn't supposed to kill you, it was nice to accomplish it when I am trashed. (Landreth 342.6) | |

AM - 12 Highland from bottom up w/ James. Then XC Canal Trail and Rollercoaster from the two churches in the fields. Had to add a couple at the end to hit the 12 and did my striders during the last mile. (Cumulus white 128.1) afternoon - 7.8 NEW TRAIL ALERT! James and I had spotted what we thought be a new trail, so I went and checked it out this afternoon - it is (although it is still under construction and "no trespassing"). It goes from the bottom of the Parkway through the gap to the river - I'll call this section the Indian Point Trail - after some Indian ruins I found when I hiking last year on the point way above the trail. Halfway down this access trail, there is another trail being made that goes up the quarry around the backside by the hill to the dump (I only went up a little bit of this because I didn't want to hit too many miles - I'll do it another time). At the river, the trail goes north and is bulldozed all the way up to Sunrise Valley bridge 3.8 miles from my house (eventually the trail is supposed to go all the way up to Zion). I've always wanted a trail here, but the tammies made it too thick to even hack one through - so this is a fun discovery. The new trail helped me not think of the toe nail I ripped off this morning moving stuff around in the garage and the pain it was causing (not to be too gruesome, but I tore my middle nail on my left foot right off to the place it comes out the skin. I pushed it back down and bandaged it up. The pain was there, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. Hopefully it will hold up on the downhill of the course tomorrow.). Also, it was hot today! (Cumulus blue 331.3)
| |
AM - 18.5 Big Workout #18. SGM course 8 mile easy then 10 tempo progression from Tinman to MP to LT. Legs are just gone. This 103 week has been harder than my 130 week. Got into the tempo section and could barely make my legs go - quads are just spent. So I stopped for a minute around 4 miles into it to just reboot. I finished up my water, stretched, and just tried to focus mentally for a minute and tell myself I could finish it up. It worked well enough to be able to continue the progression down to 3 MP (5:45's) and 3 LT (5:30) miles to finish up. On the positive side, I told myself that if I could hit the times when I am this spent (and faster than I have ever finished SGM), I should be headed in the right direction once I get my legs back. Toe hurt a little, but I survived. (Stratus Bee 130.2)
| |
AM - 15 Fields Run. Big Workout #17. 4 mile warm/7 Tinman/4 cool. Didn't really hit this one as well as I would have liked. Legs still fatigued, tired in the morning, dark, lack of concentration. A lot of reasons - but all in all, I just didn't run as hard as I should have. Between 6:03-6:10 on the Tinman miles. I've got to get focused, especially when I have to do these on my own and early. (Landreth 357.6) afternoon - 4 Sienna Hills Park. Ran out to the park and did my 8x100 striders barefoot on the grass. They were very slow and sluggish just like I am. (Cumulus silver 551.85)
| | AM - 12 Fields w/ James and then XC to Sienna Hills and ran 1 mile barefoot on grass. Still not running very well at all. (Cumulus blue 341.3) afternoon - 6 Upper Grapevine. This was one of the slowest, tiredest, crappiest runs I have ever had. I didn't want to put the time, but then as I used the stick, I read my log from last year at this time. In doing so, I realized that I have had similar struggles - so I guess I'll put my time so I can read back on it and learn (and laugh). It took over 55 minutes for 6 miles. 2 miles at 10:00 and 4 over 8:00. Oh well, move on. (Stratus red 479.35) | |
| | AM - 15 Big Workout #16 - 6x1000's w/ 200 jog recovery. Up beyond early to meet Logan and Clyde at the track at 4:00. Warmed up for 5 up Green Springs w/ 2 at Tinman. These felt a little strained, and I was worried that I wasn't going to do well on these (especially the way I have been running). Goal time 3:20 (5:20 pace) 1-3:15 felt pretty good, surprised that I did so well; 2-3:17 just wanted to keep them flowing at a steady pace; 3-3:15 Again still feeling pretty solid, almost like I could even go faster, but I tried to run within myself knowing I still had 1/2 the workout to go; 4-3:13 wanted to take a second off each one to end it; 5-3:11 really felt strong on this one; 6-3:10 had to work it a little to hit the time, but did it and let out a little victory yell to congratulate myself and started to dry-heaving. Cooled down with 1 on the track and then 4 out to factory stores and back. Great workout; felt pretty pleased with it. Next time I will go into it with a little more confidence. (Stratus Bee 145.2) | |
| | AM - 12 Treadmill. Made it through it - that's all I have to say about that. (Cumulus white 140.1) afternoon - 8 Treadmill. Again made it through this crap. Al will be home tomorrow afternoon! (Stratus 548.3) | |
| |
AM - 8 Treadmill. Another pretty brutal treadmill run. My left hip is really setting in with some pain. (Stratus Bee 153.2) PM - 4 Up Mill Creek toward Tortoise Fence. It was a little weird only doing four miles, but it was good because my left hip flexor is giving me fits. Hit striders on the way back down the trail. (Stratus 552.3) New month: had a pretty solid month last month - mileage was way high (496) and had some very good workouts; but didn't hit race exactly like I wanted. Goals for August: Keep the workouts right on with the "Circle of Trust", figure out a way to keep it flowing with school starting back up and XC starting races and such. Race well at Provo River.
| | AM - 18.2 SGM course w/ Logan and Eric. Not a bad little run, but not a whole lot in the tank either. Kept it pretty casual for the first 12 then took it down just below Tinman for the last 6. Hip didn't hurt while running, but I can barely move now. (Cumulus 158.3) Week was alright. Hit my goals and workouts pretty good. Goals for next week: the biggest goal is going to be to adjust to a new schedule w/ school meetings starting up Monday, so hit all my workouts and keep getting enough sleep. | |
| |
morning - 4 Lower Grapevine. It was beyond weird to go 4 miles for the first run of the week. Hip felt a little better with just minor twinges. (Precision, ran in these for the first time in a long time. I thought I might try a different shoe brand to mix things up a little, but they are so worn out, they felt just like my other worn out shoes.) evening - 16 DC - Big Workout #15. 4 Warm up/8 Tinman/4 Cool. Got pretty wet as the clouds unleashed, but I was more worried about not getting struck by lightning. The frogs didn't worry, however, and were out in force. Hip took forever to warm up and kind of gave me grief throughout. I used the foam roller when I finished and really tried to work out the kinks. Splits will be on the same miles as 2 weeks ago, except we started 1 mile earlier today (so mile 2 this week was mile 1 last time - last time in parenthesis). 1-5:48; 2-5:54(6:04); 3-5:57(6:00); 4-6:00(5:56); 5-5:54(5:54); 6-6:01(5:59); 7-5:57(5:51); 8-5:58(5:55). So times were pretty much right in with last time. Last time I was tired from Bryce; this time I just wasn't quite on my game, but I still was right at the 6:00/pace where I needed to be. (Stratus Bee 169.2)

| |
AM - 12 Around Washington then Fields w/ James and just a couple more around to round out the 12. At the end of last night I (all of us) just wanted to be done; I felt the same way today as I stepped out the door. But... barely any hip pain - even as I started off. Worked it over again with the roller and Wintercrest. (Cumulus white 170.3) afternoon - 5.2 PVHS around mall area and connect down onto River Trail. The team took off w/o me for practice, so I ran real easy w/ Madison toward her house and then just around the area. (Stratus 557.45) -Workouts will vary for the rest of the week (starting today) from the Circle of Trust as I cut back a little for Saturday. Pool Running - 10 min. I was working on the pool a little this afternoon and taking the dog for a swim, so I decided to run a little. Pretty hard and tiring after not having done it for a couple weeks. Hope I didn't mess up my hip more doing it.
| |
| |
AM - 8 Lower Grapevine/Highland w/ James. Hip felt pretty good, but I was sore from the pool running and took it pretty easy. (Landreth 365.6) afternoon - 5 DI extended to 3 and then part of that again. Ran with some of the XC kids (those that show up). Hip felt fine, but now it is really hurting again. (Cumulus silver 556.85)
| |
| | AM - 10.1 Wendy's w/ James. Hip felt great this morning, but is giving me a little grief now. That has seemed to be the case the last couple days (hurting after the run). (Cumulus blue351.4) | |
| |
AM - 8.35 Middleton w/ James. I felt pretty good today - very sleepy, but ready to roll. Hip is feeling good. No pain before or on run and just a little now; so maybe that is turning a corner. I'll keep working on it though. (Stratus Bee 177.55)

| Race: |
Provo River 1/2 Marathon (13.2 Miles) 01:09:56, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1
AM - Got up early and headed down from Sandy with my in-laws to Provo to hit the craziness that is the Provo River 1/2. The logistics and busing are just a mess, but it is a fun race with solid competition - so I'll probably keep coming back. Got a 2.5 warm up in with Adam as we broke the law and went up into the private property, claimed ignorance, and then down the road a little. I was ready to go!
Very happy about how this race went - I just seem to run really well up here. Hit both my major goals (for time and position). Course was a little different than last year - started up higher (faster), hit the highway for a couple miles (slower), ran around the shops more (slower), last year read 13 this year 13.2 (obviously slower):
1-4:55, Started off well with Sasha, sharing quarters briefly, Jeff pulled away very quickly and was already gone; 2-5:08, pretty much running by myself by the end of this mile; 3-5:08, feeling very good and happy about the start, just trying to stay within myself; 4-5:03, thinking about plans to catch up to Jeff and maybe run together, but he was too far up; 5-5:21, first mile of the uphill on the highway; 6-5:33, second uphill mile on the highway, falls were very pretty from here; 7- 5:07, Timed Jeff's lead as we got back on the trail, he was up 53 seconds, Sasha was pretty much the same distance behind me, Gu and water; 8-5:16, Really trying to focus on the less than 10K left and hit each mile solid, this is the first time I know my splits (as I writing) since I didn't let myself look at my watch at each beep instead realizing I just need to keep pushing; 9-5:22, Feeling a bit of fatigue setting in, decided to hit the aid station around here for a quick water splash; 10-5:27, Kept doing little inventories from about mile 5 on every mile or so and just checking my legs (felt good), breathing (flowing well, but getting quicker in here), and mental strength (kept saying out loud, "You are doing great, your amazing." Dumb, but it actually helped. I felt way stronger than on any 1/2 I've done before; 11-5:19, Started the mile thinking just 5K left keep it hammered, I knew a sub 1:10 was very doable, even a sub 1:09 if I could keep on the gas; 12-5:46, Started to fall off a little, having a hard time through all the turns and stuff here at the bottom (plus it was poorly marked in places and Jeff was long gone with the lead bikes and I had to guess at a couple points); 13-5:43, The last two miles were a struggle, legs were heavy and I tried to tell myself to just keep it going and not lose it after working so hard; 13.2-4:50(pace), came around the final turn and just dug it as hard as I could, Finished very strong, need to put a little of that on the last two miles and bring those times down. I am way pleased with this run! I felt like I had stalled out and all the hard work I was putting in wasn't getting me anywhere more than last year, but this is brings it all back - things are paying off. If the race had been on mileage I would have been down around 1:09:20'ish I think. (1:10:06 pr coming in on a little short course/1:10:18 on an accurate course). (Ohana 105.25) Great job to all the other bloggers (an amazing turnout and great runs) 3.25 Cool down with JeffMc and had a good talk getting to know him a little. (Stratus 560.7)
| |
AM - 12 Coral Canyon out and back. Wasn't sure if really what I would be able to do this morning (pace or distance) and I got back late last night, so I just got up early and ran on my own out toward Coral Canyon. I hoped to do 12 if I felt okay. I felt pretty decent, but it was a good thing I didn't look at my watch for splits - ended up right at 8:00 ave, so not horrid, but a little fatigue in the legs. I will have to make up the Big Workout later this week, probably on Fri. (Cumulus white 182.3)
afternoon - 6 Green Springs from PVHS. 6 slow, tired, tight, and hot miles. More spent this afternoon than this morning. (Cumulus silver 562.85)
| |
| |
AM - 9 PVMS and 2xAC. First of many Arctic Circle runs in the morning. Pretty slow and easy again. I am a little worried about getting back into Big Workouts with 1000's tomorrow. I don't know how ready I am, but I've got to do it sometime (right?). (Landreth 374.6)
afternoon - 5 during practice I just ran around from kids to kids making sure they were all right in the heat. Then I did my striders barefoot on the baseball field and finished with another 1/2 barefoot. Shoes off felt great. (Stratus red 482.85)

| |
AM - 15 - Big Workout #14. 3 mile warm up, 2 mile Tinman, 8x1000's, then 4 cool. This was a pretty yuck workout. I wasn't expecting to be as solid as 2 weeks ago, but I didn't think it would get this ugly. Up before people should be and over to PVHS. Hit the warm up with Clyde and Logan, then we were on our way. 1-3 were in 3:17 and I felt that was pretty good and I felt pretty solid. 4 slowed to 3:19 so I wanted to bring the last 4 back to 3:17 (not a chance). From I started to carry the weights from the 1/2 and the times went bad. 5 was 3:22; 6 was rancid at 3:29; 7 I was pretty spent but tried to relax and run with solid form, this helped bring it down a little to 3:26; then 8 was yuck at 3:31. Cool down was tough as I was physically tired. But I guess I got it done - although I wanted to get more out of this workout and make it help me get better. Oh well... just get the legs fresher again and things will pick up. (Stratus Bee 192.55)
| |
| |
AM - 12 3xAC and a bunch of laps in between. The kids are a much fresher bunch than I in the mornings. (Cumulus blue 363.4)
afternoon - 8 Hospital and 8xbarefoot striders. Easy cheesy in the beastly HEAT. (Stratus red 489.85)
|
| |
AM - 11 2450 and 2xAC and a few laps. Hip really gave me fits yesterday afternoon, but felt pretty solid this morning and is not bugging much today. Adjusting to school and fitting in running is hard. (Cumulus white 193.5)
afternoon - 9 5 miles barefoot on the grass around the baseball fields - felt great, didn't even think about the fact that I was running a million laps. Then 4 for XC out into Washington as a chill recovery run before the meet tomorrow. (Cumulus white 197.5)
| |
| |
AM - 20 Store out to Shivwits and back w/ Logan and Clyde. Out the door at a time when it was not even really worth going to bed in the first place and on the road at 3:15. Really not a bad run, though. Talked and had a good time with our lack of sanity and then pushed the last few in. I was going along well until 17 when my body and mind just shut down (I almost just laid down right on the trail), then hit a bathroom break and finished it on up. (Landreth 394.6)
Not a bad week. Getting my legs back at a decent rate; hopefully early next week I will feel 100% with it. Goals for next week: Continue to work out the kinks in the scheduling to get school, running, XC, and my family all the time they need (oh I forgot sleep - I guess I don't get that!). Also have a little better Big Workouts this week than the one last week. I plan on merging the Tinman workout that I missed last Monday due to recovery into this week's program (most likely on Weds. morning). And just have a good solid week where I smile a lot. |
| | AM - 16 Big Workout #13. 3 mile warm up into the Fields and then 2 miles, 1 mile, 2 miles, 1 mile, 2 miles at attempted LT pace (5:30) and a 5 'er for a cool down back up to the house. Again hit the roads nice and early - I used to dread XC morning practice having to get up at 5:00, now I love sleeping in to 5:00 on those days! But getting up was okay, I seem to be handling the early hours okay - I just need to keep eating as best I can, sleeping whenever I can, and having fun while looking toward my goals and it will be okay. Anyway, the workout... Started the first 2 at the double churches in the fields which made much of the 1st mile up a bit of a hill, then I tried to use the down to even it out and get me moving on the 2nd mile, but I had to interrupt the 2nd mile for a bathroom break, so that stop and speed back up cost me a bit (1-5:45, 2-5:38). Second set was a nice flat mile along the road in front of the old Hooper Estate (5:30). Third set was a flat mile and then a decent up into Little Valley which set me back, but I was working it big time (1-5:35, 2-5:59). Fourth was an easy mile back down out of Little Valley (that I just went up) to George Washington Academy. But I didn't look at my watch during it, thinking I was hitting the pace easily, so when I finally did at .8 I was too slow and had to work hard to even get it back to where I finally ended up (5:40). I need to make sure I stay focused throughout. Finally the last set was a two miler back along two flat sections down the GWA road and Hooper Estate road to Staheli Farm corner. I was very thirst and upset at myself for forgetting my water, so I made a quick stop at a fountain and dunked my head in and grabbed a drink just .25 from the end, but I had to do it (1-5:35, 2- 5:45). Cool down on the big climb back up home - that's the only thing I hate about going out to the Fields. A good run though - best workout I have done early in the morning by myself. (Cumulus white213.5) | |
| |
AM - 12 Mall Run reverse then 2xAC with XC and a big loop. Took it easy today - the body wanted EASY. (Landreth 406.6)
afternoon - 5 Started off with 2.5 barefoot on the grass including 8xstriders and then hit the warmup lap with the team. After taking water out to them and working on hills, I finished with a short 2 mile jog to get my miles in. Now off to Back-to-School night. It is severely cutting into my sleep time tonight and I am not happy about it. (Stratus 563.2)
|
| |
AM - 17 Big Workout #12 - 4 mile warm up, 9 mile Tinman, 4 mile cool down. Headed out to the Fields to hit the workout. Warm up was very easy and I had a little bit of a hard time getting going on my first two Tempo miles (including when a deer jumped out of the field like 5 feet in front of me, so close I could have spit on it; it gave me quite a scare). So the first two were 6:30 and 6:20; but then I got rolling and hit the rest in 6:00-6:10. I felt very pleased with the workout. Not every mile was exactly where it should have been, but not bad for EARLY in the morning and pitch dark and by myself. There were times when I felt like things were very, very good - everything just rolling perfectly - even if it was for .25 miles or even longer like a mile. And that just left me feeling really good about the workout and where this is all going. (Stratus Bee209.55) afternoon - 5 Dogpound and then 8xbarefoot grass striders. Nice and easy. (Cumulus silver 566.85)
| |
| |
AM - 12 Mall Run reverse then 2xAC. with a couple laps. A little fatigued in the legs this morning, but nothing out of the ordinary. (Cumulus blue375.4) evening - 8 Millcreek Trail w/ James. It was nice to get out and run with James again. He has improved so much - it goes to show what consistency and hard work will get you. Took it easy and just enjoyed the desert. Every time I start to get a little down on my running or just burned out w/ life (like this week) a run in the desert brings me right back up! (Stratus red 497.85)
| |
AM - 6 2xAC. Just 6 this morning; it was weird to sleep in until 5:40! This week's long run planned for tonight. (Cumulus silver 572.85)
PM - 21 Green Springs (Landreth black 21)
| |
afternoon - 8.75 Lava Pass trail up over Highland (Landreth 415.35)
|
| |
AM - 11.5 Parkway and Middleton. A real stupid run because it was so dark I couldn't see a thing - even with my headlamp, I took a spill. (Cumulus white 225)
evening - 6.5 Treadmill. Just tried to get some miles in today as some crappy stuff took place.(Stratus red 504.35) |
| |
AM - 10 2450 and 2xAC. Nothing big, just trying to hit the mileage. (Landreth 425.35)
afternoon - 5 Treadmill at decline. Warmed up a little and then took the pace up to 5:30 for a mile - I missed one Big that had a bunch of 1 miles at LT, so I wanted to see where I was at. I only did one, but it got my legs going a little (something I haven't done in a little) and hopefully keeps/gets me feeling fresh for later in the week. (Cumulus blue 380.4)

| |
AM - 16 Big Workout #10 - 5 mile warm/7 MP/4cool. Hit a very solid workout from the DC and up and down the River Trail with the Circle of Trust hitting times right on (5:45). 1-5:33, 2-5:38, 3-5:40, 4-5:44, 5-5:50, 6-5:40, 7-5:45. Hard time focusing on the run at times with some family things going on, but at the same time it is nice to get out and do something I love to help... (Stratus Bee 225.55) afternoon - 4 Dogpound. Sneaked in a short run before we are off to an XC meet. Switched yesterday and today's easy runs knowing I might not have enough time. Legs were pretty sauced at first, but got going okay. (Cumulus silver 576.85)

AM - 12.75 Foremaster and 2xAC with a couple laps. Just a run this morning; tried to grab just a little more to make this afternoon a little easier to deal with. (Cumulus white 237.75)
afternoon - 6.75 4 miles barefoot on grass with 8xstriders and then the warm up w/ XC. Then I took water out to them and ran up 1.25 miles to find the boys and ran back to the water with them. I was going to add just a little more with some of the kids to hit the distance I needed, but I had to haul a kid home who got hit by a car. (Stratus red 507.1)

| | AM - 19.5 all over the place from PV. Started w/ the River Run and then hit 2450 and was going quicker than I had planned (not hard at all, but I had built in some extra time just in case I was as slow as last week's long run) so I added DI loop before the 6:00 group showed up. Then I ran 2xAC with the team at 6 and 6:30 with some laps in between to have the grand total and grand tour of the Pine View area! Felt so much better than last week's long run. I didn't go fast, didn't even time it; but I just felt way better and didn't have to strain at all. Now to end the week with a great big workout tomorrow. (Landreth black 40.5) | |

AM - 16.5 Big Workout #9 - 4 mile warm down the SGM course 10x2 min CV pace (5:20), 3 Tinman, then cool. Warmed up real nice and easy and spotted 4 shooting stars then got into the workout. I didn't think this would be too big a deal, but it was much harder than meets the eye (didn't help that pace was much quicker as well, but that is a product of the course, Logan kicking our butts, pushing with Clyde, and just getting better). The CV's were between 4:30 and 5:15 with most right at 4:55 (fastest on the drop around the volcano and the slowest up Winchester) and covered basically .4 miles. It was pretty speedy and hard, but it was like, "Wow, this is pretty cool even though it's hard!" The Tinman 3 were so easy it was just like a jog hitting 6:00. It was a fun/hard workout and ended with Clyde just about making it so we could finish because we were laughing so hard! (Stratus bee 242.05)
Week was solid. I would like all the weeks leading up to the marathon to be like this one as far as workouts go. With all the stuff going on with Ally, I don't know how I still hit every workout and did everything else I needed to. As far as that goes, I am glad it is over and we can just work on moving on as a family now and making sure she is healthy - it was very stressful and emotionally and physically draining. Goals for next week: Make the Big Workouts BIG! Two weeks of 115 and 2 bigs/week then things start to calm down a little. I am actually getting a little antsy - and it is a little too early for that!
| |
AM - 16.5 Big Workout #8 warmup then 4,3,2,1 mile(s) at MP (5:45) w/ 2:00 minute recovery jog and then cooldown. Workout was an absolute beast; the hardest workout I have ever done in my life! Hit the times on all of them, however, even though legs were absolute toast by the end. (Cumulus white 254.25)
evening - 5 Parkway. A very easy 5 to try to work the legs out. It may take awhile to recover from this one. (Cumulus silver 581.85)
|
| |
AM - 12.25 Mall run and 2xAC. I was crap this morning. Legs are spent and I don't know if I'll be ready for tomorrow. (Landreth black 52.75)
afternoon - 7.25 Top section of Foremaster as kids finished up hills and the 2450. I am in even more pain today - I guess not really pain, just spent... bigtime (Stratus red 514.35)
|
| |
AM - 12 Wendy's w/ many extensions. Logan called and the Circle of Trust decided to postpone the Big to tomorrow. I am glad I am not the only one suffering! This run sucked as I had to keep adding extensions to make it 12. (Landreth 437.35)
afternoon - 8 Dogpound and 3 miles barefoot including 8xbarefoot striders. Took this one real easy. I am still really worried about tomorrow's Big. I hoped the striders would get the legs moving a little, but they just hurt. (Cumulus blue 385.4)

AM - 16 Big Workout #7 warmup, 2 miles Tinman, 6xmiles at LT (5:30), then cool down. This is basically the Big I missed as I was tapering for Provo, so while Clyde and Logan had an idea on this one, I didn't no how hard it would be. Plus, I was still worried about how my legs were going to do this morning. I iced up Tuesday, have been using the stick and doing whatever else I can to try and get my legs back, but they still seem toast, so I wasn't sure what I would get out of them today. The Circle met nice and early and got started with easy warmup and then a Tinman that was more of a Scarecrow. We did the miles up and down between the overpass bridge and the golf course from the DC. 1-5:27, 2-5:29, 3-5:29, 4-5:28, 5-5:27, 6-5:28. Somehow I hit all the times. I am happy I was able to make it and just kept thinking that each one I hit was going to make me that much better. The structure and definition of this program has been grueling, but I know it will be rewarding. (Startus Bee 258.05) afternoon - 3 Harts and big loops. Way easy run with the kids as the warmed up for repeats and cooled down with them. It was wierd to go just three - but nice. The legs wouldn't have wanted to do more anyway. (Startus red 517.35)
| |
| | AM - 9 DI and 2xAC plus some loops. Didn't feel as toasted as I thought I might. (Landreth 446.35) afternoon - 4.15 in Provo for XC. Ran with team from hotel up to track and tried to figure out the XC course (but we were backward) and then back to hotel. (Landreth black 56.9)
|
| | AM - 22.1 in Provo ran with the Circle who were staying in the same hotel as us down to one end of town to pick up Greg H. then up the canyon. All of us were pretty tired, but it sure was nice to want to wear gloves. Tried some Pepsi at mile 14 to see if I could stomach it; it felt okay. Then we hit a progression on the last 5. Wasn't great, but I was able to stay right at Tinman, so I'll take it. (Landreth black 79) Week was solid - but hard! One more major week. Goals for next week: Stay healthy. Right now I think everything is going amazing in the training and if I can just stay healthy, I know I'll hit the workouts and finish off these last few weeks to take me to that sub 2:20!
| |
| | AM - 12 Junction by way of 300 and 11th extension. I haven't run out this way in a little while. It is still a pretty nice run if you can avoid getting killed by some garbage truck or cowboy who is late heading to work. (Cumulus white 266.25) afternoon - 8 3 miles barefoot including 8xbarefoot striders then 6 meeting up with team after taking water out to them on the River Trail. A little overcast and pretty nice. (Cumulus blue 390.4)
|
| | AM - 12.5 Foremaster and 2xAC with a couple laps. A little warm with the cloud cover this morning. (Stratus bee 270.55) afternoon - 8.5 3 miles barefoot on the grass and then out to Sunrise Tire Hill w/ a few of the girls on the team for hills and then back with a few of the guys. Not as nice as I had hoped as the chance of rain was long gone by the afternoon. I just realized I went further than I was supposed to today - oh well, I'll just cut out a mile later this week. (Stratus red 522.9)

AM - 16 Big Workout #6 supposed to be a progression of 3 Tinman, 4 MP, 3 LT after warmup and cooldown to finish. Logan and I warmed up 5 and started into the Tinman. That was fine, but I felt a bit of leg fatigue. Moving into the MP, I just couldn't do it. First one was close then I dropped back to Tinman and my goal became to just finish the workout there - I could tell there was nothing and I just kept thinking, "How much more of this crap can I take?" But I only need to take 1 1/2 weeks more of it. Coming back up the trail toward the Dixie Center, I knew I would need to really stay focused to even hit the Tinman, but as I came around the sharp corner just past the driving range, I caught my foot on the edge of the trail and ate it hard. It knocked my breath out and totally cut up my knee and whole right side. I took a few minutes to try and get myself back together and decided to get moving again. Needless to say the next 2 1/2 weren't great, but really not too far off of Tinman that I was hitting before. It was a pretty nasty fall, and I think I'll be feeling it for a few days. Even though the workout wasn't very good, at least I tried. I'll get the next one better. (Landreth black 94) afternoon - 5 Dogpound w/ warmup and cool down. I was a bit worried as I was limping and bruised, but it felt okay to run. There is some pain though that's for sure. (Cumulus silver 586.85)
| |
| |
AM - 12 Mall run then 2xAC and some laps in between. Not a bad morning run especially after the crap sleep I got last night - every position in tried to sleep in somehow hit a bruise from yesterday's fall. But this morning it didn't bug me too much. (Landreth 458.35) afternoon - 7 River Trail and back and a couple loops to hit the 7. Enjoyed running with a fun group today. (Stratus red 529.9)
| |
| | AM - 22.2 Quail Creek with 11th, 300, and Coral Canyon extensions both ways. What a great long run. This was the best solo long run I have had in a very long time. The temps were awesome and I ran great. I am getting very excited for XC and for the SGM. The only thing is that I wish that the Circle or James or someone had been out there with me. It was just great all around. I ave about 7:00 overall with a real solid last half without even pushing hard. (Landreth black 116.2) afternoon - 4 Provo River Trail. Got to the hotel early, so I got an easy 4 tro stretch out the old legs before we headed up to Murray Invite. Times were pretty slow, but most of the soreness/fatigue was worked out by the end. (Stratus bee 274.55)
|
| | morning - 10 Provo Canyon. Ran from the hotel up to the canyon and about 1 mile into it. Hit between 7:30 and 8:00 on the way up, just nice and easy. Then picked it up just a little on the way down and hit 6:30's pretty easily. It was kind of nice to end the week on an easier workout with lower mileage. Glad to have this week in the books. (Stratus bee 284.55) Week had its ups and downs, but ended with ups so life is good. Goals for next week: Make it through one more tough week - mileage is going down a bit 100-105, but still a couple hard workouts. And survive Parent/Teachers. KEEP HEALTHY!

AM - 15.1 Big Workout #5 warm up, 7 MP, cool down. Somehow I slept through the alarm this morning. I woke up to a strange dream and thought, "No big deal. The alarm should be going off any minute anyway." So I rolled over and saw that the clock said 4:45! I grabbed it and saw that it was set right, I just somehow slept in 45 minutes. So I totally missed the Circle of Trust. Sorry guys, I hope you didn't wait too long for me. I couldn't believe it. So I just went out to the fields and decided to shorten my warm up and cool down to 3.5 each. Then I got into the MP and it went pretty well. About 1/2 right on and 1/2 just a few seconds slow (with a 15 second slow 6th) - that's where good workout partners come in, you all just feed off each other and pull each other and don't have those slips, hopefully. Snagged another mile in the cool down and had to cut it at that. (Landreth black131.3) afternoon - 5.15 up to on Foremaster with a few different groups of kids and then the Car Wash Trail. (Stratus red 535.05)
| |
| |
AM - 10 Green Springs and 2xAC with a couple laps. My knee has been giving me some problems still. I think the bruising was pretty deep from the fall. It is very stiff and uncomfortable all the time with occasional shooting pains. (Landreth 468.35) noon - 5 Mall run. Sneaked it in before afternoon parent/teachers. This is such a beastly week with P/T and other school stuff along with just being ready to back off training. (Cumulus blue 395.4)
| |
| |
AM - 10 Middleton. I really had a hard time getting up today. The run went well and the temps are amazing in the morning, but I just did not want to get up and do it. I am worn down - mostly from things other than running, but it is taxing on me. Now to figure out how to get 8 more in today with P/T afternoon and night, practice, and family commitments. (Stratus Bee 294.55)
noon - 8 3 barefoot on the grass, warmup and then dogpound w/ Ashley as she did AT, and cool down. Got the run in and it felt pretty good to have just a little bit of a pickup with Ashley as she did a very solid AT. (Cumulus silver 591.85)
| |
| | AM -16 Big Workout #4. 4 mile warm up, 2 Tinman, 8x1000's, 4 cool down. What a morning. Met up with Logan with the only thought on my mind being just get this crap done. Main goal was to have the workout be better than the last time when I struggled to even finish. I thought if I hit 3:16's for the first 4, I would be solid to finish with 1 second improvements to the end. I hit 3 of the first 4 at 3:16, with the 3rd at 3:17. Then brought it down to 3:15, 3:13, 3:14, 3:12. I was pleased. Still not as good as the first time when I took some under 3:10, but it was solid. It was amazing to watch Logan kill his workout. He is so smooth and fast; truly amazing! Had a good chat as we cooled it down and called it a day. (Cumulus white 282.25) | |
| |
AM - 9 DI/2xAC and some laps. Legs were pretty flat. Breakfast after was pretty solid. (Landreth black140.3) afternoon - 4 barefoot on baseball field. Although it might sound tedious to just run laps on the field, it is actually pretty nice and goes by fast. I really wish there was a large grass park around that I could just run for miles on barefoot.
| |
| | morning - 22.9 Oak Grove to Middleton. Caught a ride up to Oak Grove to meet with Clyde and Logan and the Circle of Trust was back in effect. Started the run at the top of the hill just after the Oak Grove turn off and ran around the base of Pine Valley down to Turkey Farm; then at the water tank cut off to the T-Bone Trail and down to Clyde's. Although we never burned up anything, the pace was solid throughout, especially considering the climbs and only being on road for about 1/2 for the whole run. A lot of fun, and nice to take the mind off the tough training we have been putting in. (Cumulus white 305.15) Good week; even better to have it done. Goals for next week: Again, #1 goal is to stay healthy. Enjoy the taper with just 75 on the docket and sharpen the saw a couple times with a little turnover on two Big workouts (that really shouldn't be too bad).
| |
| |
AM - 10 Middleton w/ some extensions. I think I slept through half of this run. A little sore from last week still. (Stratus Bee 304.55)
| |
| |
AM - 7 2xAC and some laps. Really weird sleeping in. I don't feel too fresh yet. (Cumulus white 312.15
afternoon - 6 Foremaster. Nice easy run with most of the Varsity boys. I guess I'll cut a mile somewhere this week because I really don't want to be going over the planned 75. (Landreth 474.35)
| |
| |
AM -15 Big Workout #3. 5 mile warm, 4x4 min. CV, 5+ cooldown. The Circle of Trust bid a not so fond adieu to the Dixie Center Trail (for now) with a heartfelt workout of 4 minute intervals at 5:20 pace. Felt a little sluggish today, but still hit my times right on or up to 5 seconds under. So I guess that is a real good sign. I know I am in great shape, I just need to let the calm of this taper set in and get the soreness, tightness, and sluggishness out. (Landreth black 155.3)
evening - 1 Homecoming Parade. Kind of a cheesy mile, I know, but we were out running and it was a lot of fun. So I am counting it.
| |
| |
AM - 7 2xAC with some laps. Legs were crap this morning. I did 2 long sessions of the foam roller last night and tried to work out some crap and tightness, but it is still around. I think we will be spending some quality time together for the next week. (Stratus Bee 311.55)
evening - 7 Ran out to the grocery to grab some apples for one of the girls' homework and then did 3 miles barefoot on the grass at the Washington ball fields. It made for more miles than I needed today, but I wanted/needed the grass. So I will just grab 1 extra tomorrow morning and be done for the day w/ no afternoon. (Cumulus blue 399.4)
| |
| | AM - 7 AC and then The Beast, Austin, and I ran the proposed PVXC home course. I think it is a solid course with what we have to work with - maybe a little twisty and overlapping, but we don't have much room to work with. (Stratus red | |
| |
morning - 15 Big Workout #2 15 miles of progression out in Santa Clara. Met up with Clyde and Logan and ran around a little. Then as Logan raced, Clyde and I hit a few more. We missed the finish since those boys were so dang fast, so then we went out toward Kayenta and slowly got into our progression. Took it down to 6:30 and then brought it back with 4 or so 6:00's. Have the usual taper aches. Hips are acting up and tightness in the quads and hammies. (Landreth black 170.3)
Week was okay. It was really weird to hit just 75. Almost had to hold myself back numerous times on runs and doubles (or lack there of). Through this very long training process, running 100-130's has just made it such a huge part of my lifestyle that this change has played with my mind and body a little. I think I have been a little more cranky and tired because I am not giving my body what it is programmed to do. This week's goals: Here we go! This is the week. Just stay healthy - I couldn't do any more humanly possible to get ready for this race (at my level) than I already have. I haven't missed any workouts since I was sick clear back before SLC; I hammered through the winter to get myself ready to do enormous mileage early this summer; then The Circle of Trust pushed the workouts to a new level for the last three intense months. I am totally prepared, anxious, amped, and nervous. I think it might be a long week at school as I try to stay focused on doing my job and not just drifiting off into the marathon haze. Luckily I have a few things to keep me busy. Anniversary this week (9 years and Al hasn't left me yet; although she might after this training phase) and a big meet up at Cedar on Friday where both the boys and girls need to make statements. Well... whatever happens happens, I can't do any more. I'll just go out there and give it my very best and be pleased with where it sets me.

AM - 0 was supposed to get up and do 5, but I was so tired I couldn't even face the reality of even just a small run. Yesterday I was spent; sleeping through much of church, napping, and falling asleep at my parents' at a moments notice. So I figured I need the sleep and just went with it. afternoon - 9.3 Big Workout #1. Last one! The depletion run. I felt the crap in my body especially my legs from not having run this morning. Hit a warmup with the team as they did Dogpound AT; then I headed toward the River Trail. Finished my 5 warmup and went into the 2x1 mile CV. Right off the bat I was hammered. My legs were lead. I somehow managed to hit the first just fine, but I was struggling. Hit a quick bathroom break and then came back up the trail and it wasn't pretty. Although the time didn't slip much, I really struggled. I tried to keep a level head about the deadness of my legs and the difficulty I had getting anywhere near my time and just figured it was what it was and cooled down 2 back up to PVHS. Hit a good icebath at home and really tried to work the legs out with the roller. (Stratus bee 320.85)
| |
| | 0 - finished up depletion stuff today and started the carbo loading this evening. I tried to eat normal amounts of food, but without many carbs. It put a struggle into my normal meals which usually revolve around carbs, and I found myself craving everything. For the next two days I will be on a steady diet of whole grains. | |
| |
AM- 8 Middleton. Nice early run. I have slept really good the last few nights and think that I have caught up on the sleep my body needed. Today's run was nice. I felt pretty good and relaxed with only a minor twinge in the legs here and there. I will take another ice bath tonight and use the foam roller again. (Landreth 482.35)
| |
| |
AM - 6 2xAC. Well the morning started off better than the last, as today my Jeep wasn't broken into. Just hit a couple easy runs of Arctic Circle with the troops this morning. All systems go... (Landreth black 176.3)
| |
| |
AM- 4 A couple laps and AC. Austin had to kind of real me in this morning; I am ready to roll. Legs are feeling pretty good right now after ice bath last night and the decrease in mileage. (Cumulus white 316.15)

| Race: |
St. George Marathon (26.2 Miles) 02:30:19, Place overall: 5, Place in age division: 1
Race Day turned out to be a memorable one! So I have run through the worst Boston in history and now the worst SGM in history. I wouldn't say that conditions were as bad as Boston '07 overall; but the wind was there pretty intense the whole time, and this time, I was really working against it on my own for a big portion of the race. Here's how it all went: Race day conditions were rainy, chilly and windy. Got to the start line and tried to stay dry in my garbage bag until a few minutes before the race. Warmed up by running around the corral for a bit and trying to stretch out a little. Had some tightness in my upper hammies that stayed pretty much the whole race only to be replaced by MAJOR tightness everywhere later! Mile 1- 6:01 - We watched Jose take off and we all sat back, way back. It seemed that no one wanted to take the lead and have anything to do with the wind. 2- 5:50 (11:51) - Still very easy. We all noticed how very dark it was and this, along with the very slow pace, caused a lot of jostling for position and clipping legs and arms. 3- 5:24 (17:14) - I got tired of this and took the lead (as we had long since passed any mad dashers). Sasha tried to real me in, but I told him that I was just taking my turn up front - really I was just trying to get things moving. Although times seemed to be out the door for the race, we still couldn't just piddle around (this became my attitude for whole race, I guess). 4- 5:21 (22:35) - Group was now moving along and thinning out a few people. By this time, I think most of us had stopped worrying about trying to stay dry and we were just going. 5- 5:29 (28:04) - These miles felt pretty good. I did a few mental checks of key areas of the body around 3 and 5 and tried to convince myself that I really felt great. I really didn't feel sharp yet, however. 6- 5:11 (33:15) - Dropping into Veyo, Danley picked up the pace a little; I noticed that the other guy - Mark Currell - also wanted to be right up front. I made a little push to go up front and position myself for my first water and gu and everyone moved right with me. 7- 5:14 (38:29) - Had a smooth water stop and threw my hat to my dad. Although this isn't the highest level, I kept thinking to myself how cool it was to be doing "championship racing", the strategy forming early, working together, working against people. It was fun. 8- 6:09 (44:38) - This is where the leader/winner made a big move. Right here on Veyo. Danley seemed to try to go with him, or at least move also. And I settled behind Sasha, but he wasn't moving up quick enough and Nick came up, so I went with him, so did Sasha and Jeff. Nick and Jeff actually pulled up a little near the top. 9- 5:59 (50:37) - Knew that I HAD to pull back up with Nick and Jeff, so I surged for 1/4 mile and got back to them. I really tried to put myself in the mindset to stay with everyone, because the way I was feeling, if I fell back, I won't ever get back on track. 10- 5:58 (56:36) - I told the group that we could work to get Danley and then go for the top guy. I was really the only vocal one in the group. I hope it wasn't annoying, but it helped me stay focused. We pulled Danley back during the end of this mile or during the next. 11- 6:17 (1:02:53) - I tried to relax on this mile and stay behind Nick and Jeff as we finished off the Dammeron hills. Pretty slow, but the wind was ripping in here. Ultima stop. It sat fine; I didn't drink too much. 12- 5:51 (1:08:44) - I pushed us across the top and tried to get it moving again toward the half. My hips were so tight the whole race. I remember they really hurt in here. 13- 5:38 (1:14:22) - Wow - a bad wow. Obviously, the times were much slower than last year, but I really was working a lot harder. I hit the half in 1:15:20 - I think. This was really the first time since the early miles that I had looked at the time (hardly looked at the watch at all the whole race. I didn't dare; I didn't want to get discouraged). Through this mile, I decided it was time to make a move - not on the group, but for time. I had originally planned on really moving through miles 13-17. Although I new the time wasn't going to be there, I wanted the effort there. About my move - in retrospect was it the smartest move? Probably not for overall. All it really did was spread out the group and create someone for everyone else to shoot for since the leader was long gone. But I am proud of myself for doing it. I may have been able to hit 5th or a little higher by staying with Nick for longer, but it was time for something to happen in the race and it turned out okay, even with a dead finish. I won't ever need to wonder what I could have got if I would have gone harder today. I went as hard as I could on this given day. So would I do it again? Yes. And hopefully I'll get even better at it next time. 14- 5:41 (1:20:02) - I was originally planning to drop to 5:00 here! Nope. 15- 5:20 (1:25:23) - Saw my XC kids here and they got me my gato and a loud shout out. It was fun to see them out. Came off the volcano okay. Again, my hips really seemed to play a role in keeping me from really rolling. They were - and still are - very sore. Had to force myself to drink some of the gato. I knew I needed to, the race was still long. But the cool temps and rain gave a false sense of hydration. 16- 5:16 (1:30:39) - Did okay dropping to Snow Canyon. Finally a little crowd. It was very lonely running out there by myself. Throughout the race, I could see the cops up with the leader in the distance, but I felt totally isolated from everything and everyone. 17- 5:33 (1:36:12) - The Winchester hill loomed and I told myself, "They are coming. Just keep pushing." I was right; they were coming! 18- 5:42 (1:41:55) - Tried to keep focused. The wind was tearing me apart. I tried not to think about it at the time, but I knew the factor it was playing on me. 19- 6:06 (1:48:00) - I was so slow up the hill. I wanted to look at my watch, but refused to let myself. I was sure it would say 7-8:00 minutes and that would have killed me. I just though, "I am racing for 2nd at St. George! Keep it going. Keep it going." I did what turned out to be my last little mental check after going through my ward's aide station. I was out of it. I don't remember anything about going through except a lot of yelling and the neighbor girl who gave me my drink. I tried to convince myself that I could finish, but I wanted so badly to stop and just be done. Marathoning is so hard. So hard. 20- 5:56 (1:53:57) - I realized I was fading fast. My pace slowed for a section of this mile to nearly a standstill. I drank a little more of my flat Pepsi from 19 and hoped the gu would kick something to me. Then just tried to gut something out. 21- 5:35 (1:59:32) - My nemesis miles, through the twist. If I could just get the legs going again, I could maybe hold on to this. 10K left I thought. I focused on trying to get leg turnover where there was none. 22- 5:54 (2:05:26) - I held them off for a mile; do it again. Here is where Steve A. and Clyde got me last year. I tried to get anything on the little climb out of the twist. 23- 5:37 (2:11:03) - Held them off for another mile. But now the cheers are closer behind me. The girl at the aide station held out my water, but I was on the other side of the road from the tangent. I yelled to her to bring it to me; I hope she didn't think I was a jerk, but I could barely keep moving forward let along sideways. 24- 5:45 (2:16:48) - My long battle of attrition was over. After running alone and pushing the wind for over 12 miles, someone came up on me dropping into town. I gave a quick backward glance; it was Nick. I gave him a fistbump and he encouraged me and was gone. What now? Try to hold off the next one. 25- 5:59 (2:22:47) - A major goal of mine, and a key to my goal time, was to really keep on it at the finish. I have never once had a finish of a marathon where the last few miles were something to write home about. How do I feel about today's? I am not sure. I didn't quit. That's a positive. It wasn't a whole lot slower than even last year. But I was D.E.A.D - dead! 3rd place got me just before turning off diagonal. 26- 6:03 (2:28:50) - I knew some big dogs were still hunting me down and I didn't want to lose all I had worked so hard for, so I tried to grit down. I got a little boost when the PVHS pep band hit a little fight song for me as we turned on Tabernacle. It was exhilarating for a short minute (I wish they would have pushed me all the way in!). 26.2- 1:19 (2:30:19) - Coming down the end it was gone. Everything was gone. 4th caught and passed me with about 200-300 to go. I wish I could have held it, but I was hoping not to fall down. I have to stop making a habit of these dramatic finishes - I really am not doing it for the attention. As I ran, my legs would just drop lower and lower and I started to weave. I tried to stand up straight and the whole process would start again. I really just hoped to cross the line. My legs were cramping and there was not one ounce of anything in there. Made it and was caught at the line by one of our trusty men in uniform. Well... That one is over. Really nothing left to say or analyze that I haven't already. I was an amazing training season. The Circle of Trust totally pushed me through. My wife and kids are an absolute amazing support. And congrats to everyone. I am especially proud of James who qualified for Boston, broke 3, and hit a 30(?) minute PR. Good job big bro. It was a ton of fun running with you. I guess I should also note for future reference when I am an old man (yes pvxc I am not an old man, yet!) that I won the Silver Shoe for top local finisher. A nice trophy, bread for a year, and a treadmill, and don't forget that cool jumbo candybar with the SGM logo on it. That was pretty neat. Also top 10 and top finisher for my age division. I got 3 bags - one for each of the girls!

So I told Al not to let me run for at least this week... She just laughed at me... I was serious, however. So sore - most ever!
| |
| | I've held up my end of the bargain for 2 days now. Unfortunately my body is living up to its end of the deal. I told it if I don't run for a week (at all) it must get feeling rested and healed - not completely, I know it will take longer than a week to get back to hard workouts, but those minor aches and pains gone.
| |
| | The legs are finally starting to cooperate with me. Really no pain or soreness this morning. Had a fun swim last night with the family and did just a couple laps to see if it helped work anything out. Maybe the last time of the year for me - with a meet today and the weather looking to turn nasty this weekend. | |
| | Still holding strong. And after walking all over at last night's xc meet, I am glad. I can tell the legs, although only just the littlest bit sore, don't have anything in them. I was tired just walking around to cheer for the kids. | |
| | The itch is resurfacing. I am trying to calm it for a few more days. I'll keep myself busy having fun with the family for the rest of the week. Yesterday we had another nice day out by the pool. Maybe one more tonight before the storm hits. | |
| |
Wanted to get out and get a run in as it was perfect fall XC style weather. But I promised myself I would give it the full weak. So... Monday!

| |
AM - 5 Washington Loop w/ Turtle Creek. Maybe I shouldn't have been so excited to get back going. From the very first step my hips were in... a lot of pain. So sore and tight throughout. My breathing was so horrible that I nearly puked all the wretched food I have inhaled in the past week. It's all okay, though; first one down. Got my whole winter planned up to LA; and hopefully I'll hear back from them soon about getting in. (Stratus red 540.05)
| |
| |
afternoon - 5.3, 2.8 out in Sandberg's with the boys and then a DI Loop. Things still aren't that great. I wanted to get back to doing weights today, but almost decided against it because I don't feel that great. But I figured I was starting very easy since I hadn't lifted in a long time, so I might as well just add to it. Regular routine: squat, bench, lats, leg extensions and curls, core stuff. It actually felt kinda good to do it. (Landreth black 181.6)
| |
| |
PM - 5.5 after a solid region showing (boys champs, jv boys top 12 spots, girls 2nd and going to state and individual champ) we had our team fundraiser run-a-thon. This year we did it overnight. Had a lot of fun. Got 5.5 in sometime before midnight. (Landreth black 187.1)
| |
| |
AM - 3 Sometime around 2 AM or so, Austin and Kimz and I went down to the Mosquito Trail and had a fun little run. It's is neat to have athletes that are so passionate. (Landreth black 190.1
evening - 7 Club run on City Creek Trail. One of the worst days of my life - had to bury my dog today. Decided to go run hoping it would help distract me a little. Had a nice run out on the trail with the Circle and talked and enjoyed life. I'm going to miss my dog. (Stratus bee 327.85)
| |
| |
late morning - 8 Grapevine Springs to Coral Canyon. There is no better place in the world to run that Southern Utah in the fall on the trails. Run was slow and enjoyable. Hips didn't hurt as bad this morning. (Cumulus silver 600.85)
| |
| |
morning - 20.25 West Canyon Trail - Zion. Maybe the greatest run I have ever been on. Started up near Kolob Res. running maybe a mile into the trailhead with all the local boys. The scenery throughout was the most beautiful, breathtaking sights you could ever imagine. A few of the climbs at 7500 feet killed my lungs, but brought even more amazing views of slot canyons and cliffs. After 15 miles or so, the trail connected to the top portion of Angel's Landing and we ran down Wally's Wiggles. Then we hit Zion Canyon floor and Clyde, Logan, and I "jogged" (at sub 6:00 pace) down to the canyon entrance where we met up with Katie and everyone else. My only regret is that my legs are so burned - otherwise I would have enjoyed the run even more. This trail will become a regular a couple times a year. (Cumulus white 337)
| |
| |
afternoon - 8.5 2 miles of warmup, then 3x600 striders, and 2 mile cooldown with boys, then 3.5 cool on 2450. Legs still seem pretty shot. Quads were hammered when I tried to use the stick on them. (Stratus bee 336.35)
| |
| |
AM -7.6 Green Springs. Not really a good run. My hips and hip flexors are just shot. I am really regretting the extra bit of mileage added onto Saturday's run, it was just too much at the time. I am looking forward to being able to run normally again without pain and without limps. (Stratus red 547.65)
evening - 2.5 SLC. Around the mall in South Town with the team to stretch the legs after the bus ride. My hips felt horid. (Landreth black 192.6)
| |
| |
morning - 11.2 SLC. From South Town up into Draper and on the Porter Rockwell Trail and back. Felt a little better up until about mile 8 and then my legs really wanted to be done. (Landreth black 203.8)
|
| |
afternoon - 8 River Trail. No run this morning. We got home a bit late last night and I just didn't want to get up and run. I am really excited for a run that doesn't suck. Maybe someday I will get one of those again. (Cumulus white 345)
| |
| |
afternoon - 9 GS/PL/Middleton. Nice to get up on the trail again, but it was very disappointing to see how much they have continued to push building into the desert - even when homes aren't selling in the first place. Had a brief thought of going longer, but decided that wasn't the smartest idea as my legs are still thoroughly shot. (Stratus bee 345.35)
|
| |
AM - 15 Fields. Hit the roads early this morning. Right knee pain was very present for most of the run, but I stopped multiple times to try and stretch the legs out, and by the time I headed home, it was hurting less. Tried to treat the run as a prep for next week's runs. Hopefully I can feel a little more recovered after the rest of the weekend off. (Landreth black 218.8)
Didn't really have a good week in any regards: my legs were completely flat, a lot of aches and pains were present, mileage was weak, and didn't hit any doubles. Goals for next week: I would like to start getting in some decent mileage, but I really am going to continue to play it by feel and not push it too much. If I feel better than this week I'll run more; if not, I'll do what I did this week.
|
| |
AM - 5 Washington Loop. I think I will try and get about 80 this week. I kind of wanted more, but with Halloween and some other events this week, I will not push it; plus that will help me transition a little better and hopefully more healthy into some bigger mileage in November. Right knee felt fine at first, but at 2 it started to really hurt the rest of the way, but legs weren't as thrashed. (Landreth 487.35) afternoon - 10 Parkway w/ team and then some grass striders up at Sandstone. These shoes are shot. My left foot had been hurting quite a bit for a couple weeks after SGM, but had been feeling much better in the last week; today the pain came back big time. Knee had a little pain, but the real issue was the heat - nearly 90 degrees! (Stratus red 556.65)

| |
No morning run this morning. I am having a real struggle getting motivated to do anything right now, let alone run in the morning. I think I am having a pretty serious case of post-marathon blues.
afternoon - 10 River Run with the boys. Then I extended it up around the DI. Not a bad run. Nothing quick and my foot hurt just a little still. (Landreth black 228.8)
evening - 3 Treadmill. Hit a quick 3 this evening. Felt okay again. Nice to get a few easy miles in. Tomorrow morning I must get up - it is the only time I can run. (Cumulus blue 402.4)

| | AM - 10 Wendy's and extension. This will be my only run today, so I made myself get up. For the first block, I literally had my eyes open for a total of 5 seconds. But slowly I woke up. I don't know why it has been so hard to bounce back - I guess my body was/is just really worn down. After only a little pain in my right knee yesterday, I thought I had turned the corner with it. But this morning there was a lot of pain again; it did subside a little by the end however. (Cumulus white355) |

AM - 8 Middleton. Got out of bed again and got a decent run in. Right knee picked up the pain again about 2 miles into it and really didn't let go. I stopped and stretched and it did back off a bit. I think the pain is a result of a tight hamstring. So I iced up the knee and will work the hamstring a bit more. A lot of smoke in the air this morning that made it hard to breathe. (Cumulus blue 410.4) evening - 8.5 Club run on Chuckwalla Trail. Always an entertaining run. Today I was torn up by a few bushes. But it was a lot of fun to be out on the trail and out with the Club. Knee started to hurt at around mile 4.5, but it was minimal throughout the rest of the run. (Landreth black 237.3)

AM - 10 Wendy's w/ extension. Ran through Middleton first today to mix it up a little. Very warm out. Who would imagine running shirt off at 5 AM on Oct. 31st! Knee pain started about 2 miles like usual, but I stopped and stretched and pain stayed pretty minimal. New pair of Stratus 2.1 (Stratus black 10)
afternoon - 4 Warm Springs w/ extension. Got out and snagged a short run before the Halloween festivities. Pushed Laney in the stroller. Hadn't done that in a long time. We had fun. (Cumulus blue 414.4)

AM - 15 Fields Loop. Out early today before a slew of family events. Had a lot of time to think out in the dark by myself this morning and that kept my mind off my knee for the most part. Started to hurt at about 4 and just ached a little throughout. Actually felt okay. First run with an average under 8:00 that I have worn my watch on since the marathon! About time. New pair of Cumulus 10's. (Cumulus gold 15)
Week was okay. Mileage was a good build up, but runs weren't all that great - slowly coming along, however. Goals for next week: keep getting knee to feel better. Get back to 100 milers if body always.

AM - 6 Dogpound. Somehow I slept in a little and wasn't able to get in my full run. Too bad, because I felt great this morning. No knee pain at all (I had Al walk on my hammies Sat. and I think it hit the spot). Maybe things are turning the corner from St. George. (Landreth 493.35) afternoon - 12 River Trail. Started out with the team as they went out 4 and back. I kept on going and went down toward the DC and turned it around at 6. Felt good but a bit fatigued. No knee pain again! (Cumulus white 367)

AM - 8.05 Green Springs w/ extensions both ways and past cemetery. Run was okay, but I wasn't too strong. Pretty slow; but again no pain in knee (hopefully that is done with). (Landreth 245.35) afternoon - 15.25 The Beast. Boys took me through the wringer today. Warmed up by going out to vote and back with a little extra as I waited for school to get out. Then we warmed up to Harts. Then we hit the 600,800,1000,1200 workout (3 sets) that I have worked the Varsity boys up to. They wanted me to feel how tough it was... and it was! Not the hardest workout ever, but a dandy. Hit the times very solid - better than I thought I would, and tried to hang in there with the boys. Austin pretty much owned me. Then cooled down for 1.5. I will be sore tomorrow. (Stratus black 25.25)

AM - 8 Factory Stores. After a real stiff slow beginning things went okay. A little chilly out this morning, but really still not too bad. Hopefully I worked out most of yesterday's workout. (Cumulus blue 422.4) afternoon - 10.7 GS/PL/WT. A poor run. Very tired in the legs and it showed. Coming down turkey farm and down to the school, where I usually ave near 6:00 pretty easy, I was barely getting under 8:00. That shows the body and legs need a little rest break - I'll take it tomorrow morning. (Cumulus gold 25.7)

Cumulus Blue Miles: 8.00 | Cumulus Gold Miles: 10.70 |

| | evening - 10.15 Club run. The extra sleep treated me well. Although I wasn't really tired, my legs enjoyed the time to recover this morning. On the run it showed as I wasn't as dead. It was good to talk about some issues that have come up that are really bugging me. But it was difficult to learn that the Circle had been broken (Logan knows what I am talking about). (Stratus bee 355.5) |

AM - 8 Middleton. Today wasn't a good run as my mind just raced about recent events in a very negative way - I could have used music on this one to distract me. The run was actually okay, just not my thoughts. (Cumulus blue 430.4)
afternoon - 9.05 Dog River. Combination of dog pound and then onto the river trail and up the trail to nowhere and back to school. In the last two miles from AC to Harts, I beat all the cars. I bet they felt stupid stuck in traffic and getting passed over and over again by a runner. Today I was actually able to hit the last 3 miles in the low 6's without much effort; it just took 6 miles of 8 minute running to get the legs flowing. (Landreth 502.4)

morning - 18.2 Kayenta from SCHS w/ Clyde. A god solid run. Temps are the most amazing things in the world. It would be heresy to miss running outside on a day like this. Run went well, wasn't bugged by anything too much and it actually ended up being my best ave. since the SGM at 7:10. After finishing, watched the end of the SC 1/2. (Cumulus gold 43.9)
Went was solid. Was able to take it over 100 even with letting myself sleep in one morning. Had a very good interval workout back on Tuesday. And legs may be coming back. Goals for next week: Again be over 100 (I pretty much just want to finish the year there 100-115). Be positive in all aspects of life.

AM - 8.05 Green Springs w/ extension. Run went pretty solid for a start of the week. Kind of carrying a little extra from the weekend. Started at 155. (Cumulus white 375.05)
evening - 10. Started w/ a mile on the treadmill; then ran Grapevine and extended it down into Coral Canyon; finally ending with 1.4 on the treadmill again. Had to hit the wierd schedule with Al shuttling the kids around. A real good run. Had a few solid sections that were below 7:00. No knee pain for the past week and trying to keep this possible sports hernia as calm as possible. (Stratus black 32.25)

AM - 8 Middleton. Just a nice chilly run. Nothing too quick or spectacular. (Cumulus blue 438.4)

It has been a strange week. I had planned on running up in SLC, but we had major car problems before we left and that got me down, the idea of a funeral got me down (with all that has happened to us the last few months), and my lower abs hurt enough to make me not want to even do anything. All this combined to really bum me out. So I didn't run and haven't run since. Actually my abs are feeling a little better and I WANT to run a little (5ish) today which is something that I haven't wanted to do for what seems like forever - even though it has only been a week - so I'll try it. I've decided I am going to cut back quite a bit until I get some enthusiasm back - that may be months or just a few days; I don't know. afternoon - 5 Mall Run. Not too bad of a run. Started off with the usual aches and stiffness that should be expected after a little time off, but they all mostly worked their way out. A touch of inner hip pain (hip flexor area) - I wonder if this is what is causing my lower ab stuff since it seems to radiate into that area. Did some active strecthing for cool down. (Cumulus blue 443.4)
|
| |
| | evening - 7 Club run. I guess the group is meeting earlier, because I missed them. So I ran the usual run backwards thinking I might bump into them, but the must have done something else/more. Anyway, the run was pretty decent. Still an aching pain persisting in the right hip flexor. Worked on my active stretching and am icing and ibo'ing. (Stratus bee375.95) |
| |
| | afternoon - 6 Foremaster. Easy run out by myself. Same general hip/ab pain. Ice/Ibo/drills/core stuff like usual. (Landreth black 251.35) |
Landreth Black Miles: 6.00 |
| |
| |
morning - 11 Junction/Coral Canyon w/ James. Had a good little run talking about all sorts of stuff. Same level of pain in hip/ab. It seems to have really calmed down this week and is isolated to more of a surface muscle level pain in the inside hip/lower ab. Usual drills and core/ice/ibo (Cumulus gold 54.9)
I started running again this week; that's about all that can be said about it. Goals for next week: step it up a little if the injury can handle it. I am going to try and hit some 10k training stuff this winter instead of the mileage approach I have used for awhile, but that will require pain free running as possible; we'll see what happens.
|
Cumulus Gold Miles: 11.00 |
| |
| | afternoon - 10 dog pound/trails run backward with some extensions. First few steps were great as there was absolutely no pain. By the end there was very minimal pain in the hip flexor area. So hopefully things are working a little. (Stratus black45.25) |
Stratus Black Miles: 10.00 |
| |
| | Afternoon - 9.5 - 2x2000. 2450 warmup w/ Austin then 2000's. I wasn't really sure how many I would be able to do, and I knew that the pace wouldn't be super since I hadn't done anything like this in awhile. Hit the first in 6:38 (5:15 at the mile) then had a 2 minute recovery and did the second in 6:43 (5:20 at the mile). Would like to have done more, but figured this isn't the time to really kill myself, rather just get a baseline and go from there. Finished with another 2450 and then drills. Today, no pain! (Cumulus gold 64.4) |
| |
| | afternoon - 10 Fields and DI. Went out for a wet chilly run w/ Austin into the fields and finished with DI loop. Could feel the 2000's in the legs, but no pain in hip flexor/abs again. Ended with drills core. (Cumulus white 397.05) |
Cumulus White Miles: 10.00 |
|
| | noon - 8 Middleton. Still very wet and rainy out, so that threw off my plan of heading out onto some trails. Like yesterday, had some fatigue in the legs and just took it very easy. (Landreth 510.4) |
| |
| | noon - 10.25 10x400m hills at Highland. Ran up to Highland and thought the hill up toward the park would be a good one for some hills (nothing Sunrise steep, but a solid incline where I would be working and still trying to make it fairly fast paced). From the light up to the 3rd street on the left was exactly 1/4 mile for future reference. At first, I was still dragging, but by 5 my legs were juicing up a bit. Then the last three I really worked - especially the last. I really tried to keep my best form focusing on lean and leg rotation. Then jogged it back on home. (Cumulus blue 453.65) |
Cumulus Blue Miles: 10.25 |

| |
morning - 14 Hurricane Trails. The Circle and Ruthie went for a nice run around the trails out in Hurricane. Started out at the canal trailhead and connected to the rim and jem trails. Had to end with a little xc and down the road. It was okay though, because the distance was enough for all of us. (Landreth black 265.35)
Week was a success. Mostly because my pain was very little at first and by the end of the week basically nonexistent. And I was even able to get a couple decent/quicker workouts in with no side effects. Goals for next week: Mileage is staying low (55-60). Hopefully I can stay pain free - goal for that is to continue to do core workouts, drills, ice, ibo and rest. We (PVXC) are going to have a time-trial on our school course in a few weeks and I wouldn't mind being able to hang near the top guys!

| | afternoon - 7 Mall Trail/DI w/ Austin and Kimz. Nice easy run to work out some of the stiffness. Felt the pain just a little more than I had at the end of last week. Then ran .5 w/ Ry and Lanes in stroller and Molly to the rec center for Ry's swim practice. Dog did good, Ry wasn't so stoked (but she was mostly mad about going to swim). (Cumulus blue 461.35) |
|
| |
AM - 5 Washington Loop. Will be doing a couple light morning runs like this each week. Pain was still there this morning and is kind of hanging on through the day. I'm not sure why it is coming back but I need to continue to be careful. (Landreth 515.4) afternoon - 10 6x1000. Warmed up w/ 2450 w/ Austin. Then started up on the workout. 1-3:13 felt okay. The pain was there again on the warmup at about the same minimal level, but didn't bug at all on the 1000's. 2-3:08 Austin joined me for this one. Pace was a little quick and hurt me on the others, but it is so much easier to run these with someone and the pace was actually what I would like next time around. 3-6- times jumped to 3:20 give or take a second for the next four. If some of the kids hadn't been there yelling at me, I may have stopped; but it is nice to have that feeling of completion of a hard workout. Ended with DI cooldown. (Stratus black 55.25)

| | afternoon - 6 Into Middleton and then Josh convinced us to go under the freeway - it was a long dark journey, but we made it with soaked shoes - then back by PVMS and up around DI. Then drills, core stuff. It is interesting doing this lower mileage stuff. Sometimes I am wanting more, other days I am very happy with the little. Pain was pretty minimal today. (Landreth black 271.35) |
Landreth Black Miles: 6.00 |
|
| | evening - 8 Club run. Went from new St. George Running Center location around the hospital run backwards with a few changes. Then James and I continued on with DI to make it 8 for the evening. Running from the new store will be nice as it is only 2 miles from home, but it will be the same runs I do everyday and with the traffic of the area which is good for business but not for running. (Cumulus white 405.5) |
Cumulus White Miles: 8.00 |
| |
| | afternoon - 12.5 10x400. Warmed up w/ Kimz, Aust, and Danny on Dogpound reverse and a couple grass loops. Then I hit the 4's. 1-3 were 1:14, then 4-6 at 1:15, back to 1:14 for 7, 8 was 1:15, then down to 1:14 again for 9 and 10; with a 200 jog 1:00 recovery between. It brought me to the sad realization that I am no longer fast at all. Oh well, that's life. At least I was consistent (I guess that is why I run marathons). Cooled down with 2450 and drills, core. (Cumulus gold 76.9) |
Cumulus Gold Miles: 12.50 |

| | morning - 15 Little Black Mt. Drove out to Warner Valley entrance and ran out toward Arizona. I had tried to find a good loop last night, but everything was 20+ and I only wanted 15, so I just made it an out and backer across the state line and out past the pictographs. Really nice morning, pretty cold out on the desert (only 24 at the start - and got colder for the first hour) but once I turned around it was nice. Running on the trails and dirt roads out there is great. (Landreth black 286.35) Solid week. Mileage was nothing big, just right where I want it. It isn't too tought to keep it down, it is just nice! Hard workouts aren't nearly as quick as I wish I could be, but like I said yesterday, that is just life. Goals for next week: Keep feeling solid. I have come to the conclusion that if I can just keep the ab thing where it's at I will be alright - just no increase in discomfort. I am going to try a few 1600's on Tuesday so that will be interesting. Overall mileage right at the same as this week 55-60.

| | afternoon - 11 3x1600. Warmed up with Austin on the Fire Station desert run (6). Then I got into my miles. They really weren't that great. 1-5:22, 2-5:23, 3-5:30. No matter what I tried I couldn't get under the 1:20/lap. It's like I was stuck there. On the third one, I kind of just lost my drive on the final two laps, but was at 2:40 for the 800. I can't get too down on it. But at the same time, I really should be quicker. Over the last three weeks my 1000's, 2000's, and now 1600's have all been stuck at 1:20/lap pace. I think the turnover is just gone. Cooled down with DI. (Stratus black 66.25) |

| | afternoon - 8 Parkway w/ Kimz. Legs a little shot and gut was turning a bit. But Corey kept me going with some interesting conversation. (Landreth 523.4) |
| |
| | evening - 7 Club Run. Went w/ James, Logan, and Dustin down 2450 and onto Mosquito and then up into Washington via DogPound, under the freeway and the little connection to GreenSprings and back to the store. A good run. Legs felt a bit fresher and at times I wanted to take off - but no point in doing that. Had to cut a mile or two as I needed to get back home. (Landreth black 293.55) |

| | afternoon - 12 River Trail. After warming up down to the trail, I hit 6x1 min. fartlek as fast as possible w/ 1 min/ recovery. They felt pretty good. Was pretty tired by the end of them and breathing hard. Then brought the 4 1/4 back up the trail at Tinman pace. Felt pretty good, but it got hard at the end as I hadn't done any sustained tempo since SGM. Then cooled it down back up to school. (Cumulus gold 417.05) |

|
| | morning - 14.65 Bear Claw Poppy Trail. Decent run w/ Clyde, Steve. Logan and Ruthie. Very hard trail with ups and downs and uneven terrain that held the pace back. But it worked us over pretty good. (Cumulus gold 91.55) Well, week was pretty solid again. Kept the pain down for the most part. Didn't run any morning - maybe I will bring that in a time or two soon. Goals for next week: Completely finish the 2000 workout. Try to make time to run in this crazy week. Again, keep hip/ab pain at the manageable level and keep feeling pretty excited like I have been. Mileage should probably be around 60 again. But that may fluctuate with the craziness of the week or if I do decide to wake up.

afternoon - 8 River Run. Snowy and cold run w/ Aust, Kimz, and Ruth. I am not sure why Ruth decided to bring the snow home with her. Felt good and we moved along at a decent clip. (Stratus bee 391.45)
|
| |
| | afternoon - 13.65 4x2000's 90sec recovery. Warmed up with Ruth and the boys on the Trail to Nowhere 5.3. Then instead of attempting this brutal thing on the track, I had to get home to watch Laney. So I got home and jumped on the treadmill. Did another .75 to get the legs going again. Then I started up the 2000's. I hoped that since I was doing them on the treadmill and receiving that benefit I could do alright. Set the pace out at 5:21 mile (essentially 6:40 - 2000). It was hard from the start and only got harder. By the fourth I was screaming out in pain and my daughter didn't know what to think about it all. My legs were giving out and my glutes were on fire. I wouldn't have been able to maintain anything close to the pace without the treadmill and I had to grab the bars on more than a few occasions not to go flying off. So although it wasn't a true pace (using the treadmill and moving me along), it was a killer. Then loaded up the jogger and went for a 2 mile cooldown. (Stratus gold 105.2) |

| | afternoon - 7.5 Shinob Kibe. Nice trail run w/ Kimz and Aust. Legs were a little tired on the whoops, but not bad otherwise. Then we finished just as the snow storm rolled in. (Cumulus blue 468.65) |

mid-morning - 6.85 Lava Point Trail. With school canceled - I know, how lame. I had finals and the girls had parties and crap - I decided to get out and get a few in with the snow. Roads were pretty slushy, so I worked over to the trailhead and ran on the new trail. It seems to have a crushed gravel finish pushed into the pavement; seemed nice as far as I cold tell under 3 inches of snow. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking with the untouched snow glimmering on the sandstone and lava (I am taking a mental picture - click!). So, anyway, the run was fun. A bit of soreness in my right hammy and the giant bruise on my right shin gained from Steve's stepladder is just slowly working its way down my leg. (Landreth 530.25) evening - 6 Club run down the River Trail. Nothing too noteworthy here. I wasn't too zesty for the run and kind of just wanted to do it and get it done. Didn't even add any extra w/ James.(Landreth black 299.55)

PVXC Winter Time Trial (3.3 Miles) 00:18:06, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1 | | afternoon - 7.8 PVXC home course. Warmed up for 2.5 on the course (skipping one loop) w/ Austin, Corey, Decker, and Willy. The course was a mud pit. There was still snow all over the grass and the dirt had turned to slick mud! I put on my old Ohanas (no XC racers) and we started off. For about the first 200m we kind of just joked, but then we turned it on pretty good. The race was pretty fun. I led for most of the race and knew I had to push to beat Austin's kick. I actually felt very strong and probably could have really pushed harder, but I have forgotten what it is like to run a 5K. Getting back onto the track I knew Austin was coming and he came zooming by with 50 meters to go and got me by a couple seconds with Kimz coming in just a few seconds later - but I am claiming the true victory because we took a wrong direction on the course that made it 3.3 instead of 3.1 and I won to the 3.1 mark. The course was fun and we would have probably hit low 17 with the right distance. Cooled down with DI. (Cumulus white 421.55) |

| | morning - 18.5 Quail Creek. Headed out in the brisk morning w/ James. A decent run throughout. My gut really started giving me some problems at the end and my hips were hurting most of the run, but we did 7:00 minute pace for most, not including the bigger hills and just enjoyed it. Good end to the week. (Stratus black 84.75) Week was pretty solid again. Race with the boys was a lot of fun, snow running was good, decent mileage on a long run, and kept the pain to a minimum.
Goals for next week: enjoy Christmas w/ the fam., continue to help the hip flexor/abs heal up, have a solid 1000 workout.

morning - 8.25 GreenSprings. Felt a little tight in the joints, especially around my hips. Did 5x10 sec. hills on the FireStation. Those actually felt pretty decent. When I got home, I let the dog drag me around the neighborhood another 3/4 mile. (Cumulus blue 476.9 afternoon - 10 Junction. Just a easy jogger through the drizzling rain and sleet. morning - 8.75 Middleton. Again, not too bad of temps this morning. I noticed the other day in the snow that my feet almost run in a single line as I run - which I suppose isn't really great form; so I worked a little today on spreading my feet out a little by hitting one foot on the road line and the other just off of it. Got home and took the dog around the block again. (Landreth black 308.3)
evening - 8.65 6x1000's. Did these on the treadmill. I like how it forces me to keep the pace. Warmed up with 1.5 and really didn't feel too excited to get into the workout, but once it started it was high pace and no going back. 1 and 2 were at 5:10 pace (3:14'ish), 3 at 5:07 pace (3:11'ish), 4 at 5:05 pace (3:09'ish), 5 at 5:02 pace (3:08'ish) and finally 6 at 5:00 pace (3:07'ish) with 90 secs. recovery between. Pretty tough and really worked me over. Cooled down with 2.5 around the neighborhood a bit. (Landreth 538.9)

AM - 12 Target Loop. Up a little earlier today to get a little longer run in before we head out to breakfast. Legs felt pretty good at first, but they were pretty tired at the end. (Stratus black 96.75) afternoon - 10.75 Mustang Pass Trail. At first I wasn't too excited to go out and run; my legs were tired and I was tired, but I figured I would go up MillCreek and hit 8. When I got up on the trail the sand was perfect, so I thought I might go to the top and go 9. But just before the top I saw the sign to the Mustang Pass Trail - which I have never run - and it beckoned me. It was a fun little jont up and over the litte pass, up into the snow still. Then it came out at IceHouse and I came on down home. Ended up being longer than I wanted, and I am glad it wasn't more, but it was a fun trail that I'll do again. (Cumulus blue 487.65)

0 - took one for the team today as we had to beat the storm up to Salt Lake after Christmas morning. Then it was much too stormy after all the festivities. |
| |
PM - 5 Sego Lily. Stormed all day and I didn't think I would be able to get a run in. But by the end of the day, I decided just to go out and brave it. None of the roads had been plowed and I had to run in the car ruts; jumping out to the way into the drifts as cars came by. I felt like going more, but decided not to press my luck. (Stratus bee 396.45)

morning - 13 Wasatch and Dimple Dell. The roads were still pretty shabby, but cars were pretty considerate and most didn't shoot snow and slush all over me. Run was pretty crappy and my legs were really spent, but it was pretty out. I am glad I don't have to train in this beastly stuff. (Cumulus gold 118.2) Hit some decent mileage this week even with the missed day and low mileage at the end of the week. And the 1000's were good. Goals for next week: Get another good week in since I'll have some time. Mileage maybe around 80, but don't push it. My abs/hip are hurting a little in the last couple days, so I'll be careful on that.

morning - 13 Creek Road Figure 8. Ran down 2000 to Creek and UP the hill across to Fort Union and then back 2000 and up Creek again and through Willowcreek back. Okay little run. Weather was pretty decent, snow was off most of the parts of the road and things were okay. (Stratus bee 409.45)

morning - 8 Green Springs. Chilly morning, but a decent run. Then took the dog around the neighborhood. (Cumulus blue 495.65) afternoon
- 10.5 3xCemetery miles. Warmed up with 5 on Dogpound and wasn't too
excited for the workout, but the time had come. I kind of wanted to
see what my speed level was at as compared to last year. I think the
fastest mile I had on this course was 5:19, so I set out with that as
my goal. 1-5:19, got it right on. Breathing was hard, but it felt
like I had more in me. 2-5:29, I thought I was going quicker than the
first, but when I checked my watch at my first check point I was
already 5 seconds back. 3-5:29, Figured I should try to not let the
last one slip below 5:30. Started it harder, but lost more on the
hill. After the 2nd and 3rd I thought for sure I was going to lose it,
but the 60 sec. recovery jog helped me chill it a little. Cooled down
with 2 miles around town. Workout was pretty solid: matched my fastest
time and I don't think I have ever done 3+ under 5:30. But I did want
those bars from the treadmill - like I had the last few interval
workouts - when I got real tired. Next time I'll be a little stronger
on the end. (Stratus Black 107.25) addendum - 1/29/08 5:10, 2/12/08 5:17; 2/12/08 3 under 5:30 (still not a bad set today) |

morning - 5.75 Washington Loop. Easy relaxer just trying to work out
some of the soreness in the calves after a long night of the whole
family being sick. Then took the dog around the block. (Landreth

afternoon - 11 Mustang Pass. Went out and hit this trail again. Trail was nice and soft from the melted snow - a ton of deer tracks. Enjoyed it. Ended by running down to pick up the Jeep that is going to need some work before it can pass inspection. (Cumulus white 442.55)
YEAR IN REVIEW: So I guess I'll reflect a little on 2008 as it is the end of the year, but it probably won't be some big thing as I really don't feel like it that much. I started out with all these goals, and didn't really accomplish a lot of them. Health and weather were the biggest factors why. Pneumonia in the spring really threw off my 10K season and really messed up SLC, which I probably shouldn't have run, but did anyway. Then the bad weather at SGM messed up a massive summer of training with the Circle of Trust. Still I ran a ton and had a lot of fun doing it. I pushed myself to my extremes and am a better person for it. 2009 here I come!
