Is this still the foot? Sorry it's not coming along faster.

From Hille on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 at 15:32:37 from 67.128.146.20

Yea, foot is still bothering me a little. It is definitely feeling better with the time off. I figure it is better to get it improved now than have it linger on all year. I'm planning on taking it easy this week and hopefully start up running again next week.

From Josh E on Wed, Jan 29, 2014 at 16:12:18 from 205.235.104.4

Good luck with it. It seems you have extra motivation to have a special year and it's too bad this is in the way for now.

Way to keep up the cross training. Keep it up and you will get the progression you want this year. I might need a bit of it myself.

From Hille on Thu, Feb 27, 2014 at 23:30:58 from 24.10.218.179

Thanks. It is annoying that I can't be out running. Being extra careful and waiting longer to get the foot feeling better. Want to get on top of it now instead of dealing with it all year.

That is a good question. Seems better, but I haven't tried running on it in over a month. Being extra cautious to hopefully get it healed.

What happened to your foot?

From Hille on Thu, Mar 27, 2014 at 15:13:57 from 24.10.218.179

I have FHL (flexor hallucis longus) tendinitis. Started bothering me at the start of the year. Not sure what caused it, most likely because I stepped up the intensity of my runs. Gave it a couple of weeks off in February, but it came back. So have rested it for about 6 weeks at the moment. Hopefully, I can start running again here soon. Just being extra cautious.

That's good to hear. Is icing part of your routine? I used to not take it seriously but ever since I have been icing 4-5 times a day my achilles is much improved. Go figure.

From Hille on Sat, Apr 05, 2014 at 19:16:45 from 207.50.149.216

Thanks. I have been icing, but probably need to step it up a little.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Apr 07, 2014 at 16:58:25 from 72.250.218.114

Another thing you may want to try is stretching out and/or massaging the calf to try to reduce the tension on the achilles tendon.

I randomly clicked on your blog just to get a feel of who we had now - I used to do it a lot more often in the past but not so much now with 8 kids - and I was pleased to observe that our pattern of marathon PR improvement is maintained. You improved by almost 30 minutes since you joined the blog. Congratulations!

Yes, ran last weekend and today. Foot has felt pretty good, but I haven't done anything too strenuous. If you do an easy runs in the next couple of weeks, let me know and I will try to join.

Did a small 5k at Sugarhouse Park for my friends charity this morning with the family.  Warmed up for about a mile prior to the race.  Like I said, this was a real small race with only about 50 runners or so.  Not a ton of competitive runners, given the fact that I won the race proves this.  Probably the only race I will win in my life.  Anyways, used it as a good workout.  Ran the 5k alone the whole time.  Splits were 6:02, 6:21, 6:06 and :21.  Happy overall as wanted to run sub 19.  Haven't done many 5k's so this was good to see where I was at.  Would have liked the 2nd mile to be a little faster though.  After, ran the kids 1k with my boys.  Then did 7 miles around Sugarhouse Park with average pace of 7:18.

Overall, I am happy with race.  My runs havent felt great the past couple of weeks, so I didn't know what to expect coming in.  Was hoping to run in the low 1:20's.  Ended up at 1:23:07, 6:21 average, which is a half marathon PR for me by about 15 seconds and 4 minutes faster than when I ran this race 2 years ago.  Temperatures were great for the race.  There was some head wind as we came down the canyon, which probably slowed times a little for everyone.  Probably could have pushed it a little more down the canyon as I felt better than usual the last couple miles and had my fastest mile at mile 12.  Just have to continue to build on this.

Splits:

1- 6:08

2- 6:23

3- 6:30 (uphill part of the mile)

4- 6:30 (uphill part of the mile)

5 & 6- 12:50 (6:25 average, my watch lost satellite coverage so times got message up and had to do manual laps)

7- 6:12

8- 6:22 (out of the canyon)

9- 6:20

10- 6:21

Ran the Murray Days 5k as part of a long run for me today.  Ran from my house down the the race and then warmed up with James for a bit.  Warmed up for about 4.5 miles before the race began.

Race started and I ran with James.  Our plan was to run the first mile, which is uphill, at 6:00 pace and then try to maintain that pace for the rest of the race.  Started out a little quick and then eased back into 6:00 pace.  First mile split was 6:03, so just about right where I wanted to be.  Made the turn around and started the downhill mile.  James put a little distance between me and for whatever reason I couldn't match his pick up.  Ran the rest of the race about 10-15 seconds behind him.  Second mile split was 5:55.  Third mile started and I felt reasonably well.  I caught a couple people on the uphill part of the third mile going into Murray Park and then one more down the home stretch.  Third mile split was 5:58.  Finished in 18:11.  Like everyone else has said, course was a little short but I would guess this would be 18:30's on true coarse.  Happy with the run and that I was able to maintain consistent splits.

Ran up to my parents breakfast to finish off the 20 miles.  These miles were really slow, just glad to get them in.

So-so race for me. Can't say it was a total disappointment for me, but I was hoping for better. Same time for me as my last 2 half marathons, but I was hoping for improvement. Obviously, the elements (heat and wind) played a major factor in the race for everyone.

Plan was to shoot for 1:20, which probably would have been tough for me on a good day, with James. Also met up with Jeff L at the top. Plan was to average 5:50's down the canyon. First 3 miles running with James and Jeff went as planned (5:56, 5:58, 5:58). Then boom, the wind hit. With no change in effort our pace dropped 20-30 seconds. Maintained our pace in the low 6:00's, but probably too much effort too early for that pace (6:07, 6:20, 6:13, 6:02). Came out of the canyon at about 6:05 pace, about 10 seconds slower than wanted. Knew 1:20 wasn't going to happen, but still wanted a decent time. Stayed with Jeff and James until the aid station on foothill, when they pulled away from me. It was hot down in the valley and my hydration was poor, so I started walking through them to ensure I was drinking enough. Was able to keep up a decent pace for the next couple of miles (6:29, 6:07). Then, I kind of blew up. Motivation wasn't great, I had lost Jeff and James and was running alone. So, definitely didn't finish the race strong (6:42, 6:51, 6:53, 7:01, 0:51).

Not terribly upset about the race, but definitely not happy. Would have liked to finish stronger than I did. Ran the same time as UV half marathon a month ago, but much different feel after the race with how I finished. But, time to move on and get ready for St. George. I may need to take a few days off to try and heal up some aches. My right Achilles' tendon has really been bothering my lately. There is a big bump on the heel (Haglunds deformity) that has flared up lately. I have been working through it lately, but want to get it feeling better as I prepare for St. George. Will rest and cross train the next few days to see how it feels. Anyone with experience with this let me know what helps.

Congrats to all who ran well on a tough day. Fritz was solid as always and Josh E had a great race. James and Jeff also ran great, wish I could have stayed with them.

Solid race despite rough conditions. I think had we backed off a little earlier, we all could have run a little better later on. Hard to judge effort against wind that early in a race when we were all feeling fresh still.

Nice meeting you yesturday. It was a tough race through the conditions. I knew sub 1:20 wasnt going to happen for me yesturday but hoping for a PR or beat last years time. Rest up and heal up and get after it and I will see you at St George (hopefully heat doesnt play a factor there..Im worried about that)

Met James this morning to run.  Ran first 2 miles easy and then started a tempo run.  First mile was 6:31 and felt decent.  About another 0.5 mile later started having pain just below my left calf, but above my achilles.  Felt tight, almost like it wanted to tear.  No really crampy or anything.  Couldn't get it to loosen up, so had to bag the run and walk back to the car.

Last few weeks have been frustating from a running standpoint.  I have had issues with my achilles, hamstring and now this.  Not quite sure where to go from here.  I should be ramping up and getting ready for St. George, but I have been doing the opposite.  I took last week off from running and it looks like I may need some more time off.  Not too encouraging heading to St.  George.  If anyone has advice, that would be great.

Got home and rode an hour on the bike.

They felt alright, I didn't want to push too hard not quit knowing what to expect. Hoping to continue to build so that I cn maybe, possibly have a small chance of running with you at least some of the St. George before you leave me in the dust.

Great tempo miles, even if it was a little more rough than you wanted. What was the route? Pretty flat for the tempo?

From Hille on Wed, Aug 27, 2014 at 09:47:59 from 67.128.146.116

Mostly flat, probably a little downhill overall. Started at 2700 south and 2300 east. Went down 2300 east to holladay blvd down cottonwood/walker lane down spring lane. It is an alright route, except dealing with the lights.

Long run today with James, Scott and Brayden.  Started at the top of Big Mountain to Little Mountain down Emigration Canyon to Liberty Park finishing with a couple of laps there.  Tried to simulate STG as much as possible.  Overall a good run.

Took it easy down Big Mountain, well as easy as you can down the steep parts.  About a mile before Little Mountain started a tempo with James up Little Mountain to the bottom of the Canyon.  James put a little distance on me going up Little Mountain, but I was happy with my pace going up.  Started the faster miles down the canyon.  Didn't look at my watch going down as I knew I was going faster than planned.  I felt ok and stayed with James down.

Splits for the 10 (6:48, 7:37, 6:58, 6:10, 6:19, 6:07, 6:11, 6:05, 6:07, 6:08) - 6:27 avg

Finished the 21 miles with 6:49 average overall.

Happy with todays run, glad I could maintain faster splits down the canyon.  Hopefully this bodes well for St. George.

Running the STG for the 4th year in a row.  Had made improvements each time, so I hoped this year would be the same.  Had some ups and downs during training dealing with some injuries (who doesn't), but felt like I had a solid block of training leading up to the race.  Ended up running 2:51:48, which was a new PR for me by a little over 3 minutes.  So I was happy with the time and felt like I ran just about as hard as I could.

Got a ride up to the start from my dad with my brother, my sister, James Scott and Brayden.  Got up there at about 6.  Time to relax a little, hit the port-a-potties and get ready to run.  Felt decent up at the top, not as cold as last year but ok.  Race started about 15 minutes late.  Plan was to run with James and we were shooting for the 2:50 range.

Started out relaxed and easier pace.  Miles flew by quickly.  Started sweating heavier than I wanted, so I made sure to have good hydration at all the stations.  Ended up drinking some gatorade and water at most stations along with dumping some water on my head.  Got the the 5k point with a 6:32 average (6:38, 6:36, 6:21).  Picked it up the next 3 miles and hit the 10k with a 6:23 average (6:15, 6:17, 6:10).  Was happy to be at this pace approaching Veyo, maybe even a little faster than planned.  Mile 7 was also pretty fast (6:08) and then started up Veyo.  Still felt fresh and moving well.  Went up Veyo and then subsequent few miles of climbing.  Felt ok going through this.  Pace was  probably a little slower than I would have liked, but didn't want to push it too hard and blow up later on.  Started getting a side stitch somewhere around mile 11, which is weird for me because I hardly ever get them.  Luckily it went away fairly quickly and didn't bother me again.  Miles 8-13 (7:12, 7:01, 6:51, 7:02, 6:43, 6:24).  Hit the halfway point in 1:26:40, 6:37 pace.  Our goal for the halfway point was to be 1:26:xx, so James and I were pretty much right on target.

Started the 2nd half of the race and hoping to make up some time on the downhill portions.  We started to pick up the pace and had some fast miles here.  Things still felt good and nothing much was really bothering me.  Got to the 30k point with a 6:30 average pace.  Miles 14-18 (6:20, 6:05, 6:07, 6:16, 6:20).  This was right about where we wanted to be.  Hoped we could still drop the pace a little over miles 20-23 to come in under 2:50.

Somewhere around this point James said his calf was starting to bother him a little.  I remember telling him at mile 20 that we just had a 10k left to do.  Miles 19-23 (6:47, 6:31, 6:16, 6:33, 6:38).  Got into the valley and I am starting to hurt.  My pace the last couple of miles has dropped a little despite some significant downhill.  Just fatigued and pressing forward to finish.  James has dropped back a little so we aren't running together anymore and it has gotten hot in the valley.  I know sub 2:50 probably won't happen, but I can definitely PR and run a good race.  Somewhere between mile 24 and 25, Angie passes me looking strong.  I try to stay with her and do for maybe a half mile or so.  I looked down at my watch and we were right around 6:00 pace at one point.  Couldn't stay with here and finished up the last mile.  Miles 24-end (6:39, 6:45, 6:52, 1:50).  Finished the 2nd half in 1:25:08.  So a little over 1 minute negative split to finish 2:51:48.

I was happy with the race and ran about as well as I could have on that day.  Congrats to everyone on the race.

Will see what comes next.

You are getting in lots of intervals lately. Have you set your eyes on another race yet before Boston?

From Hille on Thu, Oct 30, 2014 at 09:27:37 from 67.128.146.20

Just trying something new since I am not running much. Not sure on races yet, but I will probably do something. Maybe a half at some point, possibly winter series. You?
