Trying to see if I am ready for the Deseret News Marathon in a month or so.  Ran a good portion of the course.  Started up Little Mountain and down Emigration Canyon and then to my home in Holladay.  Was at 7:00 pace coming out of the canyon and then faded a little.  Finished with average 7:15 pace.  Not quite as fast as I wanted.

Still, a pretty nice run.

I was thinking about doing pretty much the same run, but I wimped out and did eleven on the treadmill.

Ran the DesNews Marathon.  Was not sure if I was completely ready to run the pace I wanted but decided to run anyways.

The race started out pretty good.  I had not run the first 6 miles of the course and had heard it could be pretty fast. I didn't want to start out to fast, but it was so downhill that I was going at a faster than normal pace for me and I didn't feel like I was exerting myself too much.  At mile 6 I was at a 6:33 pace.  Faster than expected and probably too quick for me.  The run up little mountain went well and I was at 6:55 pace here.  Coming down Emigration I did not ran as fast as I had expected.  My split at the half way point was just under 1:31, about where I wanted.  I got the the zoo at a pace of 7:00.  Not making up time in the canyon was my first clue that the race may not end well.  Once I started heading north on Foothill drive, the wheels come off.  I hit a wall and ended up walking a fair amount of the rest of the race.  Finished with a time of 3:29.  It was disappointing to crash at the end, but not totally unexpected.  My last 2 marathons have ended that way, crashing at about mile 18-20 and struggling to finish.  I obviously need to improve my endurance if I hope to qualify for Boston.

What is your weekly mileage like leading up to the marathons? What bq time do you need to hit? How are long and what pace are your long runs?

From Kam on Sun, Jul 29, 2012 at 16:01:51 from 71.219.150.174

3:29 is a solid time, but the slowdowns are frustrating, I know.

From Hille on Sun, Jul 29, 2012 at 16:57:46 from 24.10.218.6

Leading up to the marathon I was running about 40 miles a week. I did long runs of 18 and 20 miles, both at about 7:15 pace. My BQ time is 3:05.

From Kam on Sun, Jul 29, 2012 at 17:22:12 from 71.219.150.174

Based on what I've seen on the blog, with rare exceptions, nobody runs that fast of a marathon unless they are running 60+ miles per week. The blog is a fantastic tool for seeing case studies of what works. Check the race reports tab, then read up on marathon reports with times you covet. Then look at the training that runner did leading up to the marathon.

Christi is the only runner I've seen that ran under 3:05 with a peak week in the 40s. But she does tons of quality miles.

are you running the inaugural Big Cottonwood Marathon? Could be a knee breaker but I guess no worse than Des News.

Oh, looks like you have been putting in some solid/consistent miles lately. Nice work.

From Hille on Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 16:24:18 from 98.202.97.19

Yea, I am thinking of running the Big Cottonwood Marathon. The run down the canyon wasn't quite as bad as I thought it might be.

From Fritz on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 08:42:08 from 65.116.116.6

yeah, that canyon isn't super steep. Going down 45th at about mile 22 could be interesting and oddly enough I saw you running down 45th this morning. If I can get my hamstring back in gear I will probably run the half.

From Hille on Tue, Aug 28, 2012 at 11:15:01 from 98.202.97.19

Yea, I ran that part of the course after running down the canyon on Friday. It definitely did not feel too good going down 45th after the canyon. That was definitely me running down 45th today, I ran the part of the course here in the valley today.

From Hille on Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 11:16:25 from 98.202.98.207

Fritz-

A quick question for you. What do you think about the Big Cottonwood Marathon vs. St. George? I didn't draw out to get into St. George originally and had been planning on running Big Cottonwood. I just found out that I can probably get in the St. George if I would like.

From Fritz on Thu, Aug 30, 2012 at 12:21:09 from 65.116.116.6

St. George is a much bigger event and would probably be more fun. Coursewise BC drops more but I am guessing you could run a faster time at St. George because the drop is more casual. If I were you I would run St. George if you can take the Friday before the race off. I might also run St. George and the BC Half as a prep race. Just depends on how my hamstring holds up over the next couple of weeks.

From Hille on Tue, Sep 04, 2012 at 12:28:10 from 70.103.189.14

I ended up getting in St. George so I will be running that race. We will see how it goes. I would like to run the Big cottonwood half marathon also, but it is sold out. I am on the waiting list to get in, so hopefully I do. Thanks for your help.

A couple easy miles with a few short pick ups. As ready for a marathon as I have been for tomorrow. Goal to qualify for Boston, we will see how it goes. I feel as ready as I could be.

Race: St. George Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:03:43
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesCrosstraining milesTotal Miles
0.0026.200.000.000.0026.20

I couldn't be happier about the outcome of the race. I came in with the hope of qualifying for Boston, but wasn't sure exactly how things would turn out. I was frustrated with my last 2 marathons (St. George last year and DesNews this year). Both races I started out decent and crashed about mile 18 or so. After DesNews, I picked up my training and mileage to hopefully improve this. I was able to average 50-60 miles weekly with a high of 70 and also able to get in more 20+ mile runs. So, I went into the race the most prepared that I have ever been but not sure what to expect.

My plan was to run with the 3:05 pacer for at least the first half of the race and probably longer. The 3:05 pacer was fantastic and did a great job of helping manage the race. I felt great the first half of the race and my time at 13.1 was 1:34:09. I definitely felt like I could have gone faster, but I am glad I stayed with the pace group and didn't go out too fast. We started to make up time on the downhills of the 2nd half of the course. I was still feeling good and as we got to mile 20, where I had hit the wall the previous races, I was running strong. I stayed with the pace group until about mile 23 and then went a little ahead of he group. I ended up finishing the second half a little under 1:30 and overall time of 3:03:43. For me, this was a PR by 20 minutes from St. George 2011 and improvement from the 3:29 I ran at DesNews this year. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome for me...qualified for Boston, negative split and PR by 20 minutes.

Splits:

6:57, 7:25, 6:51, 6:57, 7:02, 6:54, 7:01, 7:55, 7:20, 7:29, 7:24, 7:07, 6:44, 7:01, 6:41, 6:38, 6:48, 6:58, 7:12, 6:59, 6:28, 6:56, 6:50, 6:38, 6:55, 7:00, 1:35....average 7:00 pace

Congrats to Fritz on his victory and a big thanks to him for answering my many marathon questions over the past couple of months. Also, thanks for all the advice and training tips on this blog which helped me obtain my goal.

way cool!!! i totally forgot about the 3:05 pacer since i was in the front corral and didn't see/meet him. pacers rock!! however when you don't start out with them and they pass you you think "crap" why didn't i start with him to let him manage the pace. VERY smart move!!! way to go!!!

Hey John, About 20 guys did a long group run this Saturday on the Jordan River Parkway and will probably start doing them regularly. Any chance you would want to join us sometime? I can always keep you in the loop just in case.

Fritz, I would love to join you guys sometime. I saw who ran with this week and my only worry is I wouldn't be able to keep up. But, I would definitely enjoy running with you guys. Let me know.

John, Here is the plan for this week's Saturday run. We will probably rotate between runs in Orem, Riverton and SLC.

Time: 8am

Location: 800 E 1200 N, Orem, UT (soccer fields)

Plan: Two separate out-n-backs. The first up Provo Canyon (10 miles), the second north along the newly paved Murdock Trail (10 miles with some marathon-pace miles at the end). Of course you can run further or shorter if desired
