AM - 3 on kiwanis, 6:30 pace. never running here again lol, the unkept lawn in front of the UA law school is a better grass loop than kiwanis was. would have just drove to the trail i've been eyeing and running another few miles there but my left calf hasn't felt good since i didall that asphalt/concrete running yesterday, and the uneven grass didn't do it any favors. i miss bama and the good grass loops it had, even with the unbearable humidity

Noon - 4 up and down a very technical mountain trail, 7:02 pace. considering garmin says i gained over 1000ft elevation just in the first two miles, that pace is pretty good, especially considering i could barely run back down without risking dying by means of a loooong tumble. probably donating plasma later today, if it doesn't kill me it's probably a triple-run day, even if the mileage won't constitute it. 0-for-3 on trying to find a good running route in provo! i'm depressed

PM - 4 on BYU mural, 5:55 pace. I ran the first couple miles of yesterday's run here and wasn't a huge fan, but after realizing there probably isn't a ~1300m flat and fast square grass loop like there is at bama, i liked it a bit more knowing there probably isn't much better as far as grass loops go. it's only about .40 miles and it's more shaped like a right-angled triangle than a loop, but take what you can get i guess.

So where do all of those BYU runners run in Provo?

From Eugene on Wed, May 19, 2021 at 16:53:09 from 136.36.201.148

judging by the one’s i follow on strava, mostly the roads and sidewalks. not my kind of thing

Try the Provo River Trail. That's where I ran all the time when I lived there. It is paved from the lake all the way up the canyon, but there are a few grassy spots along the way where you can run on softer ground.

If I were in Utah, the runs I would love to try are some that Mr. Murphy runs.

No. 1 Pipeline trail

No. 2 Grandeur Peak (This must be a great run because he has hashed both of his knees on this run and is still running it. It must really be worth it.)

No. 3 Jeremey Ranch

No. 4 Millcreek Canyon

I don't know were any of those places are, but if they are close to Provo, maybe you could get some good advice from him.

a couple of those places i’ll definitely do on my off days, i was just hoping there’d be a big ~mile loop of grass fields by the apartment like there was at bama. it makes it a lot easier when i have to work 9-5 and want a bit of recovery between the runs and work. i guess i’ll play it by ear.

and much appreciated, starman. id made note of that trail but haven’t had the chance to check it out yet, but i will soon.

Eugene:

For Provo, my favorite is the Provo River Trail. If you are near Kiwanis it would take some distance to get to, though. If you are only going for 3 you will be turning around by the time you connect. If I lived there and needed to go for 3, I would just roam the streets south of BYU and west of 900 E.

thanks, Sasha. i'm probably aiming for something closer to 10-14 in the AM and 4-6 in the PM normally, i just cut it short because my ankle was iffy and i didn't want to play the odds of making it worse.

I'm surprised how many tracks in the provo area are locked up with signs about how they'll enforce the hammer of justice on trespassers. I might have done my tempo runs on the track otherwise, but now i'll probably at least try the trail you mention for that first tempo.

Provo River Trail in the Provo Canyon is my favorite place for tempos and intervals. It is marked with triangles in the 1-2-3-4 pattern, each cycle being 0.25 miles with the distance between marks being 1/16 of a mile. There used to be such marks in the south part of the trail on the way to the Utah Lake, but they have been paved over and not repainted. How fast are your tempos, how long, and what is your schedule like? I am thinking you could join us sometime if things align.

From Eugene on Thu, May 20, 2021 at 10:48:00 from 136.36.201.148

honestly, i really couldn't tell you where my workout fitness is at since i've been pretty bad about putting workouts off since, well, forever. hoping to change that now that i'm up here for the summer though. i know i can run in the 5:50-6:05 range pretty comfortably, but that's about it(and that range has probably shifted a few seconds back with the elevation change).

i'll likely alternate between a tuesday tempo run(no distance set in stone, but probably somewhere between 5-8 miles) one week and a "quantity-over-quality"-type of repeat workout the next tuesday(probably 6-7 miles worth of 1000m, mile, or 2000m repeats at around 10k effort)

the tempo run should(hopefully) be next week, and then repeats the week after than, ad infinitum. let me know if the pachev and eugene stars ever align, i'd be more than happy to run with you guys.

This Saturday, 7 AM, meet at 395 S Palisades in Orem, 12 total, 5 down the canyon at 6:00 pace. Does that work for you?

From Eugene on Fri, May 21, 2021 at 10:44:52 from 136.36.201.148

My summer job i just started is with a moving company, so even though i'm scheduled to start work at 9am tomorrow, it doesn't necessarily mean i'm going to have a job to be on by then, so i'm not sure yet.

my schedule for the day is supposed to be finalized by 6pm the night prior, so i'll let you know if i'm available this evening. as the schedule currently stands i would be, but i could get assigned an early move between now and then.

From Eugene on Fri, May 21, 2021 at 20:16:04 from 136.36.201.148

my left achilles has had some on-and-off tightness the past few days, but as long as it feels fine tomorrow morning i should be able to join y'all. i'll let you know with another comment if the tendon is telling me otherwise. hope to see you tomorrow!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, May 21, 2021 at 21:36:35 from 72.250.218.114

If it is not too bad for an easy run, but not quite up to the tempo, you can just the warm-up and the cool down with us. We can show you the Provo River Trail and the marks on it.
