Today was a good longer run. Did a 10k and get my pace around an 8:30. My heart rate seemed to be a little lower today than usual, so hopefully there is a little bit of improvement.

I leave today for FOB Shank to take over my platoon. Battle Co. 2d platoon, a very storied platoon for their last deployment. There is a documentary and book written about them from the last deployment. The documentary is called "Restrepo" and the book is called "War", written by Sebastian Junger. Check it out for a quick, intense read.

Apparently elevation there at Shank is about 1,000ft lower (6,300ft), so hopefully that will be a help.

Colby, congrats on your new platoon. In your entire career as an Army officer you will remember your time as a platoon leader the most. I wish you luck establishing yourself with your soldiers.

Quick word on the heart rate thing. I'm 45 and have been running and racing for over 30 years and I've never thought about my heart rate. I know some people would never dream of running without obsessively monitoring their heart rate. I just feel their are simpler ways evaluate your progress.

Check out Matt Fitzgerald's new book. Run: The Mind-Body Method of Running By Feel.

Good luck with your running. It's amazing how much cred being able to run gets you in the Army, both with your soldiers and your superiors. But I'm sure you've discovered that.
