I think I did something to my foot on monday. I woke up yesterday and it hurt, but didn't think too much about it until yesterday after my run. It really hurt then and for that matter the rest of the day. I woke up today and it still hurt. I thought I would try to run on it and see if it got any better - nope. So I cut my run short to help it heal. Here is what is wrong. On my right foot, at the point where my middle toes enter the ball of the foot area, it hurts. It feels like it is bruised, but I don't know. It was probably bruised and hammering the downhills yesterday probably put it over the edge. I iced it last night and this morning and I hope it heals soon. I can run on it as is, but I feel every step and figured it would be better to not run much on it rather than try and run thru it. Not good...

Went on a hike to the wind caves (3.5 miles total with 1100 feet elevation gain) with the Scouts and Webelos.  The pace was painfully slow, but my foot felt better.  I ended up carrying one boy's backpack both ways and he still barely made it.  Although I am proud they did as well as they did.  Some of these boys don't leave the couch unless they are changing video game consoles.  So it was easy being careful and slow around the rocks.  I am icing the foot right now.  It actually feels better with shoes on than without as I suspect the padding spreads the weight around better.

Bummer. Keep icing. I had some similar pain on ball of my feet for several months, but it finally went away a month or two ago, when I started wearing shoes other than the Adrenalines. Hopefully it will just go away in a day or two. Until then you can always try running laps in the grass or something.

Ice, ice, ice, no downhill running, and wear different (new) shoes.

Thanks for the tips! I do a good job of rotating my shoes so I don't think they are to blame, but I will wear my best ones until its better.

It is likely you bruised the metatarsal heads on the hard downhills. I agree with Paul and Jon, avoid the downhills and uphills until it feels better. Soft surface running will also help. I look forward to seeing you in St. George!

Cody,

Every time someone on the blog writes that something hurts, it seems I have something to say like "I've had that too." I guess running for 27+ years will do that. So, I think I had a similar pain about 2 years ago. Of course, when I wasn't running, I iced it and all that. For running, I solved it temporarily by going to the drug store and buying a pad for the ball of your foot. I think they make them specifically for women's dress shoes. I bought a very thin foam one, not a thick gel. I put it in the running shoe of the foot that was hurting. It made a huge difference! Just be careful when you put on the shoe that you don't make it fold or wrinkle. I've since switched to shoes with slightly more cushioning in the forefoot. Good luck and may the wind be at your back in St. George.
