Ogden Marathon

2:43:48 (by my watch) 9th Overall

Race day began with some easy running in Huntsville as a few of us stayed at Logan Fielding's grandparents place the night before. That was super convenient and nice. We were all pretty anxious, but ready to go. The race started at 7 and the sun was already up and warming things up quickly. I wish this race would start at 6. The race started out pretty good with the body agreeing with the watch on the correct pace. We created a group of 3 pretty quickly (Walter, Ben, and I). Chad and Jeff created their own group not too far ahead and the leaders (Logan, Sasha, Clyde, and Seth Wold) were taking it easy for the first few miles too. The race was pretty un-eventful as we cruised down South Fork chatting and such. We stayed together really well but had a guy who recently moved from New Hampshire? join us for a while. I was feeling pretty good on the easy downhill and as we transistioned to the rollers at mile 9+ I was still happy with the pace. We took it easy (but it still felt like a race). I also was careful to hydrate well taking water or Gatoraide at every station. Things were shaping up nicely with us hitting the half in 1:20:20 (more or less). That was my personal goal was to hit the half in 1:20-1:21. It came so naturally too, so I was pleased. We stayed together (minus the guy from back east) up the big hill and along the lake. We overcame another older gentlelmen who we didn't talk to. We held back until we hit the Dam. I decided to go with the flow and sped up. I gapped my group, and tried to keep the momentum going, but fatigue was setting in. It didn't take them long to catch up with me and we ran together down Ogden Canyon. Ben had a run-in with a half marathoner, but other than that, we just tried to keep it together. I felt a lot better this year in this section, but I was struggling pretty bad. We exited the canyon and entered the trail and I fell apart. I knew I had only 5K to go, but no amount of willpower would make me keep my pace. I felt like I was barely moving. I tried tricking my mind into the "only this mile left, after that you can walk" trick, but it didn't work very well. We got strung out through here and had Kory overtake us all. He had been 30 seconds behind us the whole second half and made his move at a good point. I was in survival mode all the way to the finish. I think the only guy who suffered as bad as me (in my group of course) was Walter who walked to take a drink at mile 25 and couldn't get going again. Pathetic kick at the end for me, but I didn't care at that point. I managed to not pass out or collapse and seemed to recover reasonably well. I was impressed with Ben's race as he was strong the whole way. He got his revenge on all the races I beat him this spring....Now look out for him once the joins the blog. He will be shaving even more time...

I am happy with my race. It turned out about as expected. I really wanted 2:40, but I feel I ran my best race I could for the day. 9 min improvement over last year. ~2 min equivalent effort PR over St.George last year (based on Sasha's calculator). Still some serious work to do to get to 2:30 at SGM, but one step at at time.

It was a good day for Bloggers as we took 10 of the top 12 spots for the men and had one in the womens top 3 (Michelle), and another in the top 10 (Josse). Nice job everyone....

Nice race, way to work as a group and get close to your goal (that heat was a killer). That last 5K through town is tough after the downhill let's you open things up.

It was great seeing you again and I look forward to the WBR experience with the two FRB teams.

From Jon on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 16:06:39

You ran a great race today- 2 min equivalent PR! And you have a lot more miles of training to come before St. George. Don't worry about the last 5k- our killer speed/big workouts will take care of that this summer. You ran awesome! Top 10 finish, 9 minute improvement from last year!

From brent on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 16:21:32

Cody, nice race on a warmer day. Just my thought, not accilmated to the heat yet may have affected your race. If you were beat, could not tell it from your face coming in. Top 10 with a second place in division. 500 commando points.

Stay Kool, training for the George, B of BS Rools out

From Lybi on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 16:39:54

Great job, Cody! Just looking at the numbers doesn't look like you died at all. A little bit of a breather at mile 25 and then you kicked it in!

Congrats on a new "Sasha science" PR! (On a hot day, no less!)

9 minutes off last year! If you take 9 min. off at St. George too, that'll give you your 2:30, right?

From Walter on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 16:53:08

Very nice race my friend! Thanks for helping me through a tough time with my legs. I have to say my legs are sooo much better this race than Boston and It was at a higher elevation with hotter temps and no officers trying to book me! And I shaved 5 min. off my time last month. I hope to be able to get my times down to 2:30 by st. george also keep up the great running!

From josse t on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 16:58:45

Great job Cody, you raced well:)

From Clay on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 17:35:49

Great job Cody, a PR is a PR no matter how you look at... You guys are all so incredible to me and a great inspiration to us all!

FRB's Rule!!!

From David on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 19:22:43

Good race Cody, all that time on the treadmill last winter is paying off. Plus you can probably talk for hours about '24' with anyone you run into.

From Dustin on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 20:21:12

Great job today Cody. You're getting stronger and faster all the time. I wish I could have been there with you guys.

From James on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 21:48:00

Good race today! I was 9th overall and 2nd in the division last year as well.

From Jon on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 23:16:06

Hey, was your watch time 15 seconds slower than your milliseconds.com time?

From Chad on Sat, May 17, 2008 at 23:43:48

Cody--great race, man. It's funny how we were racing on that course just a few weeks ago during the half m with the 30 mile per hour headwind and freezing temps. Quite a change in a short time, the warmth does zap you especially when you're not used to it. Anyway, this was a nice finish to your Ogden races for 2008 and you should be really proud of your progress.

From Paul Petersen on Sun, May 18, 2008 at 14:51:15

Nice job. Definitely your St. George - Draper Days - sea level equivalent PR.

From Superfly on Sun, May 18, 2008 at 17:25:50

Cody your PR run isn't over. It seems like every time you run a race it's a PR. Great job. I'm smelling sub 2:30 at STG and top 10 for you this year.

From Andy on Sun, May 18, 2008 at 21:11:02

Nice job Cody. You continue to amaze me. I was having lunch today at the Sky Box and overheard a guy mention that he ran the marathon yesterday. I asked him about it and as we were talking he mentioned how he started out in 8th place. I asked if he was running with a bunch of fast running bloggers and he said he was until he got dropped on the hill. I guess he was the guy from New Hampshire that you ran with.

From Michael on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 10:06:57

Nice race Cody - way to overcome the warmer day and mental fatigue. Keep it up

From cody on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 18:54:23

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Why is it that no matter how much it hurts, it still leaves you hungry for more? Until next time....
