Husband was off today so it was nice to actually run outside. Did a fartlek run. Ran 8x800s with .25 in between. (goal was to keep the recovery somewhat fast as to have an overall fast time for the workout) Ran 1.25 warm up then did a loop. Splits were 3:10 (ran the 400 jog in 2:00) 3:05 (rest 1:46) 3:01 (1:47) 2:57 (1:46) 3:09 (1:47) 3:15 (1:52) 3:39 (1:49) 3:05-then cooled down. Not including my warmup and cooldown-my avg pace for 5.75 miles was 6:36. This was the first time in a LONG time that I have felt really good running...

Was able to run outside today! yeah! goal was to do 6 moderate and finish with 4 at half-full marathon pace. I did my typical 7 mile loop backwards and added my 3 mile loop in there. Avg pace for first 6 was 7:15. avg pace for last 4 was 6:22. Avg pace for the whole 10 miles was 6:54. Felt strong today and was happy with the outcome.

Did 2x2 miles ouside today with .75 mile recovery in between. (mind you this workout was mostly downhill except for the 1st mile which was net uphill and 4th mile which was equal on elevation gain and loss) Splits were 6:27, 5:59, (.75 at 7:10 pace recovery) last two miles were 6:08 and 6:29. (6:23 avg pace for 4.75 miles) Felt pretty tired by the end of this one-especially once I was home. I think I was dehydrated and felt much better after drinking lots of water.

Woke up with snow on the ground today, but hubby had today off so I was bound and determined to run outside. Wanted to do a fast tempo so I drove to the track. I did a 3.25 mile warm up. (It took a while for me to warm up with it being so cold) After stretching I started my tempo. Splits were 6:16, (kind of a slow start) 6:12, (thats better) 6:08 and my last .5 was 2:54. (6:10 avg pace overall) Felt pretty good today-first mile was the hardest-for some reason it always takes my body the first mile to adjust into tempo pace and then I get more comfortable. I am planning on doing this workout again in 2-3 weeks and hopefully my time will be faster.

Got up early and ran at the track this morning. It was all of 18 degrees. Felt very "off" and tired today. I think it was a combination of a nasty cold and not being totally recovered from Saturday's long run. (body was just exhausted) Wanted to do 4x1600s with 400 jog (about 3 minutes) in between but I only ended up doing 3 due to time and feeling crappy. Splits were 6:11 (terrible start) 5:55 and 5:49. Ran the heart healthy Goosebumps 5k again this year...Love the fact that it is free and gives me a chance to see where I am at as far as speed goes....(This course is a loop starting and finishing at the same place with pretty minimal hills-mostly flat) -After a mile warm up I got up to the line...I was happy to see they had a better turn out than last year with a couple hundred there...The gun went off and we were off...First split 5:55. Felt like a tough pace-but I wasn't dying. There were 2 guys about 10 seconds ahead of me at this point. 2nd mile is just slightly uphill-this split was 6:15. Crap-this is a little slow I thought. At this point I passed one of the boys and there was just one ahead of me. With about .75 to go a different boy entered the equasion and now there were 2 ahead of me again...I started picking it up a little trying to real them in...I passed the second boy and looked ahead at the first boy who was about 10 seconds in front of me. With about .4 left in the race I caught up to him and we were side by side...We stayed this way until the last two seconds of the race when I sprinted to edge him out....Last mile split was 5:53 with the .1 at 34 seconds. (I love the fact that this course was right at 3.1 miles-not short like last year) (6:02 avg pace overall) I was happy with this race..Looked at the results from last year and my pace was 11-12 seconds faster per mile this year so I am happy about that:) Won a gift certificate..yeay:)

Got up and ran 5x1000s at the track today with 200 m (2 min jog in between) It was really cold and windy...Splits were 3:36, 3:31, 3:34, 3:35, 3:33. Felt absolutely terrible today-starting from the first one...I literally had to talk myself into doing each one and the lactic acid started kicking in after the first 200-400 meters..The last one was especially painful. I usually think of speed as my forte and look forward to doing it-but lately I have been dreading it and my body has been just plain exhausted when it comes to speed...(My times aren't bad-but I have felt extra fatigued-not strong like usual) Not sure whats going on-Maybe it was the wind and not being fully recovered from the 5k on Saturday..I have no idea?? Frustrating because I want to feel good and the past few weeks I've felt more tired than usual.

You are running so strong! I don't know how you can run around a track that many times.

14 miles outside..I left my watch home bc I didn't want to run these miles "too fast" just wanted to run them comfortable and not worry about pace. Next Saturday will be a "fast" finish long run. Felt tired today....

Got up this morning and did 3x1.5 mile intervals with .25 in between. I did them on my usual 6.5 mile course.  (I have taken the past 3 days off just because my body has felt "off" and so tired lately. After my 14 mile run on Saturday I was so tired and sore and I feel that lately it is taking me longer to recover between hard workouts. Not sure if I am burnt out or what is going on. I just bought some iron supplements (because I have been low on iron before) I know my training times are good-but my body feels weak and tired. Anyway I know that this should be my "push" week in training but I feel I have to listen to my body and give it a small break in order to come back hopefully stronger. I am looking to take the next couple days pretty ez and have a strong solid hard run on Saturday. Anyway-enough ranting-sorry...        -Goal was to run these intervals fast but keep my recovery short and pretty fast pace also. My splits were 9:19 (6:12 pace) recovery was 1:43 for .25. 2nd split was 8:45 (5:50 pace) (1:57 recovery) 3rd split 9:38 (6:25 pace). (First one was slight net uphill, 2nd was MAJOR downhill, 3rd was net uphill finishing on a steep uphill) Overall pace for fast and slow sections for all 5 miles was 6:17.  I did this workout about a month ago and my interval sections were 4-5 seconds per mile faster so I am happy about that:) I am happy with my times and I did feel better today-so hopefully the days off have helped....

finished with some fast strides....

Ugghh...I wanted to do a great workout today but I was fighting 25 mph winds and cold...yuck. (Why is it every time I want to do a hard workout the wind doesn't cooperate?) Anyway goal was to do the first 6.5 ez and finish with the last 6.5 at half marathon race pace. First 6.5 was around 7:28 pace. Took 1 gu/gatorade stop-then the splits for last 6.5 was 3:12 for 1st 800, 6:24, 6:31, 6:33, 6:44, 6:46, 6:35. (The first 2 miles downhill-complete headwind though-last 4.5 at the track) I will just have to chalk this one up to a good effort. My splits kept getting slower in spite of running the same effort and I really tried to kick it in for the last one-and only managed a 6:35. Oh well..Moab half was super windy last year so maybe this is just good practice:) I pray its not windy though!! I would rather run in rain than wind any day.

Got up this morning for the famous yasso 800s...I look forward to this workout and do it before every half or full to see where I am at. Today was perfect conditions-35 degrees and no wind for once in my life! yeay! .5 warm up then did 10x800s at the track with 2:40 400 jog in between. Splits were 2:55 (slow start) 2:49, 2:49, 2:48, 2:49, 2:48, 2:48, 2:49, 2:48, 2:47. (really tried to kick it in for the last one-but had no leg turnover-I was pretty tired) Anyway-I was really happy with this workout-these times were close to the times I ran in the same workout before St George marathon last fall. ( I didn't feel as strong running them as back then-but I was happy to see my times were only about a second off per 800 of where I was) so this makes me happy. Now I will start to taper off for the half.

Race report please!!

Race: Moab Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:27:54, Place overall: 4, Place in age division: 2
Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance
2.5013.100.000.0015.60

I have been dreading writing this race report because this race is one I don't really care to remember....I hate to be negative but this one might be a little negative. Anyway-I woke up ready/excited to race-but my attidue started changing a little when I went outside and it was already windy...Then we got up the canyon and it was even more windy.( I felt I was having dejavu from last year's race) I was bummed because I really wanted to run a 6:20 pace and beat my time from last year...I knew it would very difficult in the crazy wind. (At least I ran into my old friend/teammate Kristen Coombs and she distracted me from being negative with her bubbly positive energy)

Anyway-the race starts and my first split is 6:05 (first mile is downhill) At this point I am only in 4th place. The next two miles are 6:21, 6:34. (the wind is blowing like a madman) and I am already feeling tired from battling it..("This is way to early to be feeling this fatigued"-I thought)At mile 3 Melody from the blog passed me looking strong...I tried to stay close to her-but couldn't)

Miles 4,5,6 were 6:41, 6:37, 6:37. At this point I am  just trying to stay positive, my body was not feeling good, which was making it hard on my brain. (also the fact I was only in 5th place and couldn't even see the first place girl in front of me-I knew that this was probably not going to be a repeat win for me) I did take a gu at mile 6 which seemed to help me get through the next couple miles.

Miles 7,8,9 were 6:51, 6:38, 6:31. (Note to self-gatorade doesn't feel good in the eye..As I was trying to drink my gatorade, a gust of wind blew it in my eye- and it stung...ouch!!) The dust in the air didn't seem to help my eye problem either..boohoo..Anyway, at this point I think there may have been a tailwind for all of .3 miles of the race so I made the best use of it as possible and around mile 9 passed the girl in front of me...I really wished I had a group to draft with like last year-but there was not  and I found myself running alone most of the time...

Miles 10,11 were 6:48, 7:09...Let the slow miles begin...I kept trying to tell myself to "stay strong and focus" but it was so hard...The excitement of racing was totally gone and I felt like I was doing a training run-I had to keep reminding myself that I was racing and to keep pushing even though my body and mind were completely exhausted and wanted to be done..

Miles 12,13 were 7:01,6:59. (last .15 was 1:00-I showed the course as being .05 long) I did see my family at mile 12 and even they couldn't lift my mood. All of the sudden with about .5 to go I saw a girl in front of me...I had no idea she was there! I tried to reel her in-but she was still too far..She ended up beating me by 14 seconds) (Even though my last miles were so slow I must have gained on her) My final time was 1:27:54 (more than a minute and a half slower than last year's windy race)

I usually LOVE racing, but today just didn't go my way...It was hard and my body and mind weren't on cue..I know the wind took it out of me physically and mentally and there were faster girls today... I wanted to place so much higher and run so much faster but I will just chalk this one up to a race to learn from and move on....I think I need a little break so I plan on no running for at least a week, maybe longer..

On a positive note I got to cool down with Melody from the blog who placed 2nd!. I know she was no where near the time she wanted to be either and reading her blog reminds me of how I felt during the race also:) (Too bad I don't live in Utah anymore-she would be an awesome training partner- She is a strong runner and I am sure she will do awesome at Boston!)

Great job and great time considering we were human sails in this race! Keep up the good work and count this race as an early year half marathon builder. I lost 3 minutes easily from my time off of my 2010 time. I was there suffering with you as well. Keep working hard!

After taking 8 days off since my half I did 5 today outside...I thought I would feel refreshed after taking a long break, but it was hard!! What is going on?? My pace was only 7:20 pace and you would've thought I was running 6:30 pace..I know for me that running and preparing for a race takes alot out of me mentally and physically...(even though I didn't have a great race-and it was only a half-I think it still wore me out mentally, emotionally, physically) ect. I will plan on easing into hard training for the Utah Valley Marathon which is mid June...I think I will also get my iron checked-bc I was low often in college and haven't been checked since...Anyhoo-hopefully I will start to feel better and I can start training hard for the marathon....I feel like my body has been felt physically "off" for about the past 2 months..I know I was still running decently fast training times-but I would come away from hard workouts feeling absolutely spent-not stong like last fall when I was training for St George..I am normally very positive and love the challenge and thrive off of pushing myself during training...It makes me happy and gives me a "high"-Right now I am definitely not feeling that way..Has anyone else ever felt this way at times? If so-what did you do? Sorry to be so negative--but this is how I feel right now..

I'm so glad you felt better today. The body really does need "rest" periods during a year of hard training and it was so smart to take a break. I would definitely get that iron checked. I'm going to get mine checked out too. Rule anemia out first.

When you take a break, sometimes it takes a few days to get the rhythm back. A body at rest prefers to stay at rest :-) It'll come back, and its not like you returned to "baseline" by taking a week off... so you have lots of time to get in quality training for UVM

Anyhoo-splits for first ones were 6:25 (uphill), 6:16 (downhill), 6:30 (flat-slight uphill) .5 rest in 4:17, then 6:08 (downhill), 6:17 (downhill), 7:01-(slight uphill and right into the blazing headwind) I went completely by feel on these miles. (about 1:35 uphill) Chose a pretty steep hill-with the peak being very steep (about an 85 ft climb in .20 meters) These were all done between 7:22-7:45 pace. (sounds slow-but it was a steep hill!)

Felt pretty good today...I am going to work on strength and speed a little bit before I get into the meat and potatoes of my workout training for this marathon.

I went to get my iron checked a couple days ago-and instead of being low on iron I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The thyroid regulates metabolism and apparently I have an underactive thyroid. My tsh number is 7 and should be at 2-3. So the Dr prescribed 50mcg of synthroid for me...Then he is going to test my levels again in 2 months and make any adjustments. My mom and grandma both have the same thing....I am thinking that this is the reason I have been feeling so tired the past 2-3 months, since tiredness is a major symptom. I am kind of bummed bc I have never been on a medication and I may have to be on this one for the rest of my life....If this helps to bring my energy levels up though I am willing to try anything. I think if anything it can only help me right?? If anyone has any insight or knows anything about this-please share:)

nice workout -- i would never guess that you feel low on energy based on those paces. awesome job.

Great workout, Christi!.

I'm glad the Dr. got to the root of your fatigue issues. I don't have personal experience with thyroid issues/synthroid but I know people that have been on it for years (probably not nearly as active as you though, I should add) and they do great on it. I think you'll be feeling more like yourself within a couple weeks of being on it and I echo what you said in your post: it's worth a try!

I also have no help. I would have never guessed that for you. Good to know, now you will run somewhere between a 2:38-2:45 marathon. I am excited to see it!! Ps, your hill times were slow, work on those first;)

Allie-Thanks for the comment..I hope the medicine brings my energy back up too. I am excited to see how you do at the Salt Lake half-you will rock it I have no doubt.

Melody-Yes-the medication is definitely "worth a try" Can't wait to hear how Boston goes for you-you've put in the hard training-now you just need to go out there and do it-and enjoy yourself. I always think of the race as the reward for all the hard work. Good luck!!! I'm so excited for you!

Tara-Hey stinker!! I saw you traded to the half! I'm so sad:( I was looking forward to us running together.) I understand though-I know you don't think there is enough time to train for the full and I'm sure you can do really well at the half. *Boston-2 years

Got up during the wee hours of the morning to do my long progression run of 16 before hubby left for work. (I won't be able to do it on Saturday) Anyway-It was still dark. I have never trained in the dark very much-but it was actually kind of nice-(peaceful and relaxing) and the weather was a perfect 41 degrees with no wind....(I get super hot when I run and I'm sure people thought I was a maniac running in a tank and shorts lol)

Anyway-plan was to go out easy for the first 9 and pick it up on the last 7. Did a loop and the first 9 were 7:24 pace. (Did take one very short potty/gu stop 7 miles in) Splits for the last 7 were 6:33, 6:34, 6:41, 6:34, 6:15, 6:54, 7:30, 6:58. (Last 2 miles uphill) Avg pace for last 7 was 6:45, and avg pace over the whole run was 7:08..Wooohoo! Today was the first day I have felt really good in a long time...Not sure if its the 7 days of my new thyroid medication or I just had a good day-but I felt much stronger today than usual, and I will not complain!:)

Time to update my blog...Ran on my aunt's treadmill today in the Philippines..(My husband served his mission in the Phillippines 12 yrs ago and has always wanted to take me back-and ironically my aunt and uncle got called as mission president's over his exact mission so we decided now was the perfect time to go) Anyway-I alternated 5x400s and 5xhills with .25 jog in between. The 400s were each at 6:00 pace and the hills were at 6.0 incline and 7:00 pace. This was a good workout-and I was hot and overheated by the end....

From Manilla we took a small flight to Palowan and stayed on an island just off of Palowan...It was so beautiful. Anyway at the resort there was no where to run-but I just made do the best I could. It was only 200 meters around the whole resort and it was thick white sand-so I ran around the resort a couple hundred times to make 5 miles. It was really tough running in the thick sand and the hot humidity!! I wasn't used to it at all and was sweating out of every pore by the end!! My avg pace was only 8:55! Lol!

Fast bits were around 7:00 pace...I know...not so fast-but I felt like it was still a good workout in the thick sand....People had to think I was crazy-dripping from sweat attempting to do speed in the sand...Lol-

Took the kids to the park today and attempted a little bit of speed. I didn't know how it would go considering how terrible I have felt this week. I did 1 mile at 5:52, 400 jog- then an 800 at  2:56... That is all my body would allow me to do..I was happy with my splits-but this workout was really hard mentally and physically for me..The first half of each interval I felt fine-but then the fatigue started setting in and it was hard to finish...After I could not stop coughing. I am really getting sick of this thing!!! It has been a long time since I have been this sick. I have a 10k on Saturday-I really want to race it-but I may have to do it for fun if this keeps up...booo

Feel better soon! I was sorry to see you got sick on your trip. This won't affect you at all in the long run. Saturdays race might surprise you - if you feel good, go for it. If not I like your plan of doing it for fun. A 6 mile tempoish run is also a good workout :) Hang in there.

Haha...As you can see from the crazy distance-the dreaded nightmare happened and I got lost on the course today..Details below...

Plan today was to not worry about time and just run however my body was feeling..(I have been sick all week with a terrible cough/cold/flu so I didn't have big expectations). I also knew going in that my time would be slow considering 80% of this course is in the dirt and hills. There was also 750 ft feet of elevation change-although the start and finish are at the same spot. (Picture the desert-brown dirt and pinon trees-that is where this course was-lol) Got to the starting line and it was  a super small race-maybe 100 people-split between a 5k and 10k.. Gun went off and my first split was 6:35...I was ahead at the mile but 2 guys followed closely behind. 2 mile split was 6:56, at this point the guy behind me threw in a surge to run side by side with me and he stayed that way for a minute and then completely died off. On the course there are signs with arrows saying where to go and around the 2.5 mile mark there was a sign saying to turn right and I did-but I turned right onto the road-not the dirt trail... There was a lady directing there-and she didn't even say anything to me!... Boo...Anyway-I ran on my merry way and after going about .4 on the road I looked back to see where the guy was and he was no where in sight. Crap! He must have really died or I must have missed a turn-I decided on the latter and turned around and ran .4 back and realized I was supposed to go on the trail instead of the road. I was bummed-but oh well what could I do?...Maybe I can start picking people off I thought...This part of the course was a trail going up and down hills and making quite a few turns. Slowly but surely I started picking people off. 1 girl, then two, then 3, then about a half mile before the finish I passsed the 4th or 5th girl. I had no clue if there were any other girls ahead of me...Anyway, I kicked it in a little for the last .92 which was downhill-but my splits for miles 3-7 were pathetic...7:37, 7:04, 7:58, 7:02 and 5:49 for .92. lol..At least I was still the first girl..(not much competition in Farmington as you can see) Anyway-they gave me a 50 visa gift card and I won a great harvest bread basket...Not too shabby...My body did feel extremely tired today-but at least the coughing waited until after the race to start..I'm hoping next week I can have more "quality miles" and get down to business.. Fingers crossed it will be a much better week...

Here's to no more getting lost...lol

Long run of 19 today.. This run wasn't the greatest for me...I battled a bad side ache for the first 3-4 miles and then it came back around mile 14.. (What? I never get side aches?!) I ran 15 outside with one water stop at mile 11.. Then 4 more on the treadmill.. Pace for the first 15 was 7:23, pace for 4 on the mill was 7:25-30. I lost 6 lbs of water weight on this run so I think I was dehydrated... This was definitely one of the hardest runs for me mentally and physically-I wanted to call it a day at mile 11 when I had my water stop-but I knew that mentally I needed to finish at least 19 so even as bad as it hurt I am glad I persevered and finished:) (Funny how I felt amazing last week on my 18 miler and not so great today!!-Gotta love the ups and downs of running)

Went to the Dr after to get more blood work done to test my thyroid levels and found out I have fluid in my middle ears that hasn't drained from my cold that I have had for 4 weeks now...That explains why I feel like I can't hear very well and my ears won't pop.. He put me on Zyrtec D-to try and dry me up-and if that doesn't work he has a stronger perscription he wrote for me..Hopefully it does the job!!! Hubby had today off so I slept in a little and it was already a little hot-63 and breezy) Anyway I hate to admit it- but today I felt terrible starting with the warm up..Not sure what is going on?!-I had a great positive week last week and two days of rest-so I should have felt good today...Anyway-plan was to do 2 miles (downhill) at marathon pace..Splits were 6:11,6:17-(definitely faster than marathon pace-but it was downhill too) Ran my two miles downhill to the track-then did 1x1600..Split was 5:47..Felt
Really hard...Then I did 10x200s with a float 200 in between. Goal was to keep the fast ones at 40 (5:20 pace) and the slow ones at 55 (7:20 pace). Ran 5 and kept the fast ones at 40-41, and the float at 54-56. Felt absolutely pooped after 5-so I took a little break to mentally and physically regroup. Then I did 5 more at the same paces. Ran/walked home-I felt so physically/mentally drained  for some reason today..Frustrating..I think I need to focus on getting more sleep-since that has been lacking lately...(**I did like the 200s for something different-hopefully next time I do them I will feel better:) Oh well-looks like it will be a beautiful hot day so now I am going to put this one out of my mind and go have some fun with the fam...

Got up and did a tough 15 miler this morning..Plan was to do 8 easy followed by 7 at marathon pace. First 8-avg pace of 7:20...(Took one short gu/gatorade stop at mile 7) Last 7 splits were (first 2 downhill-last 5 at track) 6:14, 6:17, 6:31,6:28,6:29,6:26,6:11...(6:23 avg) I felt good today! (Maybe it was my new kinvara shoes:)-I feel like this training cycle has been a rollercoaster of feeling good one day and not so good the next...Hopefully I am peaking at the right time for UVM. My goal is to run a sub 2:55... (6:40 pace) (Can't believe its 2 weeks from Saturday!) Happy running!!

Got up and ran the Riverfest 10k today...This race is 3/4th dirt road and has a decent hill so it is not a very fast course. Melissa (a gal I used to help coach with) is my competition in town- and she wasn't there today-(she ran it last year and it was a race to the finish). My goal was to get a good tempo in today.. Splits were 6:17, 6:31, 6:50, 7:09 (hill) 6:19, 6:36, last .32 miles was 6:05 pace... I showed the course as .12 too long...If this is correct-my avg pace was 6:36...Finished 1st girl, second overall....(First guy beat me by 2-3 minutes) I wanted a little faster time-but oh well-this course isn't very fast..I ran alone pretty much the whole time... Did pass 2-3 guys after the first mile-but other than that I was running solo...Felt pretty comfortable today-(it is kind of freaking me out thinking about running 26.2 miles around that pace though!).. Sat around after and chatted with friends...Waited for the awards ceremony that seemed to take forever and they called the overall winners very last! Why don't they announce overall first?? Went up to get my award and they said they would mail it to me..lol! Oh well...(It wouldn't be such a big deal-but my husband had to get to work...)

Hope everyone has a great weekend...Happy Memorial Day!!

Great job today. A solid 10K is always a great pre-marathon tuneup.

I agree that its sometimes annoying when they announce the overall winners LAST - especially when they don't even give you the award :-0

Awards are great, but it's so hard to get them. They should start the awards within 15 minutes of the winners coming across. Who wants to sit around for 1-2 hours waiting and waiting for the 65-70 year old age group winners to finish?

Short Race report version....Ran subpar race in the wind...(10 minutes off of goal time)

Full Details...Got up really stoked to run today...Had high hopes of running sub 2:55 today (and secretly I thought I could run even faster-possibly beating or getting close to my 2:50 pr..) Arrived at the bus at 4:05 and waited in line 35 minutes to get on the bus...Got up to Wallsburg and had potty break and stretched a little...Was a tad concerned it was going to be a hot day-because I wasn't even cold at the top... Lined up at the first and the gun shot and we were off...(was a little wierd there was no countdown or anything-just a sudden gun shot signaling the start) Anyway-went out with a group of 6 girls, including Emily Bates (who won)... I was quite startled to see our first mile was 6:09...This mile felt like I was jogging at a slow pace-but I knew it was at least 20 seconds too fast..I really wanted to run with the pack of girls-but I slowly started to let them go... Miles 2-4 were around 6:20 pace and at mile 5 I settled into a 6:30 pace...(I passed 2 girls at this point to be in 3rd place) I was feeling awesome at this point in the race.. These miles were very downhill and although they weren't completely effortless but they felt really relaxed and easy..I just knew that I was going to pr today...(boy did I think wrong) Miles 6-7 were both at 6:36 pace... (I started to slowly notice the wind at this point-but it wasn't until turning left to go by deer creek that I really noticed the blazing headwind) Mile 8 was 7:25 (uphill into the wind) My great splits pretty much flew out the window here...."Stupid wind" I kept thinking to myself.. After mile 8 a kind man told me to draft behind him...I drafted off of him for 2 miles until he pulled out to walk...(So kind of him) After this I was left completely alone to face the wind myself...It was blowing extremely hard and even though alot of this section is downhill-I wasn't able to make good use of it due to the wind. My splits were all over the place and I was getting a little frustrated...Around mile 10 or 11 I knew that a sub 2:55 was not in the plans today due to the windy conditions so my game plan changed to running by effort-not split times.. I kind of stopped looking at my splits because they were so horrendous..The wind was so bad my headphones kept wanting to come off my ears..(Couldn't even really hear the music) My halfway point was 1:29:30..(Maybe I can pull off a sub 3 I thought) I was having a hard time believing I still had 13 more miles to go...Around mile 15ish I saw the girl in 2nd and was working on trying to catch her when she took off like a bandit again...I tried to draft off of people when I passed them or if they passed me-but it was hard- nobody seemed to be going my same pace and most of the time I was alone.. Saw the fam at mile 16 and that rejuvinated my spirits a little..My mom handed me a water bottle and I drank some and dumped the rest on my head..(I was hot already) They told me there was a girl a minute or two behind me..Crap I thought-I really wanted to maintain 3rd place. I kept pressing on-but it was really hard-I knew my stride was sluggish and I was tired of battling the wind..I tried to remain positive-but it was hard due to how I was feeling and the headwind...Finally when we turned onto center street-the crazy headwind died down..I tried picking it up-but my legs didn't have it in them. My family kept telling me that the girl was gaining on me and she finally passed me with about 4 miles to go...She was going too fast for me to try to stay with her so I let her pass. "Come on, only a couple more" I kept telling myself...I should have been able to pick it up but I think fighting the wind and the early fast miles took too much out of me... At this point I saw my friend Tara from the blog and she told me two more girls were within a minute away from me.. "They can't pass me" I kept telling myself-but I knew I was slowly dying. My legs weren't very crampy-but they didn't have any pickup in them..I was just slogging along as fast as I could go around a pathetic 7:00-7:28  pace. With about 3 miles to go another girl in orange (who went on the take 2nd) passed me like I was standing still.. Now I was in 5th place and knew no one else could pass me if I wanted to place... Tara drove by with about 2.5 miles left and told me two girls were behind me, the next one about 45 seconds away...I tried picking it up here a little bit-and I did-only slightly though..Tara said she was 35 seconds away with about 1.5 to go....Determined to not let her beat me I tried kicking it the best I could...(My kick was pathetic) I just kept focusing on the finish line...(Not hard to focus on since you can see it 1.5 miles away) With about a mile to go Tara ran with me for a little bit-and told me I had it if I kept it steady...Last mile was 7:00 pace... I crossed the line completely pooped. 3:09...What?! I thought...That can't be right..Later realized the clock was off and I really ran 3:05:55... The girl behind me was only 16 seconds behind.. And I was only 1:35 away from 2nd place... (Everyone was pretty close for places 2-7th...)

After thoughts:This was a tough race for me...Everything seemed great until mile 8 when we hit the wind...I realized you can train as hard as you want for a race-but you have no idea what conditions/trials you will be faced in the actual race-you just have to change your game plan and make do with what is thrown your way... I love that I learn something new from every race.. In hindsight I think starting out slightly too fast and battling the wind really hindered my performance and kick at the end that normally I like to have. I think my body and mind need a break from racing and training for a bit-so that is what I intend to do...Good job to all those that ran and persevered in the tough conditions and I guess in the long run it will only make us stronger next time...

It's hard to be happy with a time slower than your goal, but given the conditions I think you had a great race. Top 5 is awesome!

Can't marathon day just be 45 degrees with no wind?! :)

Quite the race report. Despite the conditions, you actually ran pretty well. That 2nd place girl was impressive. She looked like she was running 6:30 splits from 20 miles on. SHe must have taken the canyon pretty conservative. Such a gamble that I always struggle with in my race plans. Tara-I am not sure what my plan is...I think I need one because I am lacking motivation lately.. (I know my body was pooped after UVM-so the break was nice) I have definitely lost quite a bit of fitness since then and I will very slowly try adding a little tempo/threshold etc. There is a killer half marathon here mid October I will probably do-(More than half the race is in soft dirt/hills-so I am not expecting a good time though-it is more for fun) Whats your plan?? Ran outside today. Did 2.75 warmup, then ran to the track and did 2.5 miles alternating fast and slow laps. (so technically I did 5x400s with 400 jog in between) I wanted to time them-but my watch died so I have no idea how fast they were.. I think they were at least 6 minute pace though and my recovery laps I believe were around  7-7:30 pace. (If I were to guess)

(Didn't even notice it during speed-but felt it again afterwards...) Anyway, did 3x5 minutes with 2:30 jog in between... I ran these at the park on a 200 meter loop (somewhat of a hill on the loop with some sharp turns) Anyway, pace for the first 5 minutes was 6:15, (rest pace 7:53) 2nd was 6:35 pace-(way too slow) (8:20 rest pace) and last was 6:15 pace... Ran on the rivertrail-It was so pretty and I loved it!! Running here made me a little sad I'm not doing ST george marathon like last year.. Anyway, I felt like I was able to get a decent pace going and I felt great... Avg pace for entire run 7:17... I was excited about this workout because overall with my rest paces included I was at a 6:51 pace for 6 miles...  (slightly faster than I ran this loop as a tempo run a couple days ago) (I'm know I am not in great shape right now-but its a start)

Attempted to run the half marathon course today by myself... It didn't turn out so well as I got lost.. Half the race is in the dirt- and I kept making wrong turns and getting lost... So I kind of made my own course up-running out in the hills and dirt... Ran about half in the dirt and half on pavement... Avg pace was 7:55 for 14... Not the best pace-but I was happy considering the terrain... (It was actually kind of peaceful running in the desert-my pace was super slow-but I felt relaxed) I normally don't run out there by myself... I get scared of running into a bobcat or a scary guy-but I had my mace today... Watch out!

(Avg pace including jog pace in between was 6:10 for almost 1.5 miles) I did choose somewhat of a downhill course though...

After this I jogged for a bit and then did 5x.16 meter hills... I chose a hill that was in the dirt.. It was rocky and really steep. (GPS said about a 90-100 foot climb in .16) I wanted to work the hills for my half marathon coming up... Anyway, paces for this hill were extremely slow.. They were 9:50,9:23,9:19,8:46,8:33... At least they got faster each time-but this hill really did take it out of me... It was a beast-getting steeper at the top... Very tough mentally for me-but I did it and hopefully it will help prepare me for the half..

Very nice Christi! Yeah, I thought about you when I looked up the results. You would have placed second and likely would have Pre due to better conditions this year. I'm planning on running it next year which will probably be tough competition again ( notice how every other year is competitive with results?) I keep asking, what is next for you!? we need to talk:)

It's good to have a down year - the hunger for speed/Pr-ing will drive you to a fantastic year next year. If I ever could run a 2:50 marathon I think I would call it my last :) You are amazing. I'm excited for your upcoming half.

I'm actually pregnant-due in April-so I plan on running but taking it pretty easy too:)

Melody-Yeah-hopefully next year will be a better year for me.. I have actually enjoyed the break and am due in April-but after that I plan on training hard again.. Btw-your workouts and 5k races amaze me-you are always soo fast!

So far I have felt pretty good. (Running is the one thing that keeps me feeling normal) but I don't plan on pushing it much after the half this Saturday.. Yes, I will keep running as long as I can-hopefully the whole pregnancy, but I don't think I will push it... (I will just listen to how my body feels:)

I am finally writing my report!! This half was great! The course was extremely challenging. It was a loop-but we had   1,350 ft worth of climbing. Half of the course was on road and half was in the sand/dirt/sandstone/desert... (Basically an atv trail in the sand with crazy hills..) I thought I was going to hate this course-but it was actually fun to do something different.. I liked the challenge of it and I can honestly say I never got bored weaving in the sand trying to find the best route-and most packed dirt to run on... (on some occasions we were running in thick sand-like beach sand) Anyway, it wasn't easy-but fun... I knew that I would just throw a good time out the window and run by feel, and that is what I did.

My goal today was to run strong and have fun... When I got to the race there were about 300 runners-but that was counting the runners in the 5k and 10k too. (our race had 69 runners-so very low key) The race started and it was a cold 40 degrees. I knew I would warm up though. One or two guys were with me the first two miles-but then  they veered off the course-(they were doing the 5k and 10k). After 1.75 miles of climbing on the asphalt-we were finally in the dirt. The first mile in the dirt was extremely downhill-so downhill at one point I had to almost slow to a walk to not fall. I looked behind and noticed a guy gaining on me.. The next mile was mostly flat and around mile 3-4 I went off on the wrong trail for about 100 yards or so and the guy caught me. Bummer!! I realized my mistake and quickly got on the right trail. This guy and me stayed together for the next mile or two... (We were playing leap frog..)It would crack me up bc he would kill it up the hills and pass me and then I would totally pass him on the down hills. (There were several hills that were steep straight up, then straight down) After about a mile or two of us running together I finally passed him and he never came back. After all the climbing in the dirt I finally made it back to black top and downhill around mile 9. Thank goodness. At this point I was still feeling very strong, and it was nice to have my family cheering me on every mile or so. I stayed relaxed and just had fun the rest of the race.. I finished with a time of 1:37:16, (7:16 avg pace) but showed the course as being 13.36 not 13.1 (partly due to my missed turn) The next guy in was about a minute behind.. Anyway, it was a challenging race-but very fun, and I was happy with my time considering the hills and terrain. I felt great the whole time and that is all I can ask for.. (I decided I may do more training runs in the sand-for the challenge of doing them and they may make me stronger) It is always fun running somewhere different too!

Splits were 7:12,7:07,7:24,7:39,9:12,7:41,7:15,7:09,6:33,7:19,7:18,6:38,6:43, last .36 at  5:57 pace...

Congrats on a strong race, great time and the overall win! A very good effort on what sounds like a challenging course.

Congrats again.

5.5 outside at the park.. Wanted to do a moderate run and incorporate a little bit of speed. I did 5x800s around my 200 meter loop with 400 meter jog in between. Splits for fast bits were 6:12-6:35 pace... Splits for jogs in between were around 7:20-8:00 pace.. Felt controlled/felt good.

Ran 8 on the treadmill today... Did a slight progressive run today... Splits were 9,8,7:20,7:00,7:00,6:57,6:40,6:12... Felt good, even the last mile... I know my splits will continue to get slower due to pregnancy-but I don't want to lose everything-so I will try my best... My ob said he saw the results of the half marathon and he doesn't want me training/doing any races anymore.... He also said he doesn't want me running over 5 miles a day and nothing really fast/no intervals... (I don't gain very much weight with my pregnancies-(18-20lbs-even though I eat like a horse) so that is the reason he doesn't want me running alot...) He wants me to gain more weight...Anyway, I am not sure what to think about his advice.. I feel like I know my body and of course I don't plan on training for a half or full, but if I want to do a 5k or 10k I think I should be able to or if I want to cautiously throw in a little speed every now and again I think it should be fine... What do you think?

I know he is just looking out for what he thinks is in your best interest, but I was able to train and race well into my 5-6 month of pregnancy, with the blessing of my ob. He was more concerned about not getting my heart rate up too high so I wore a hr monitor religiously. I recently read some articles that are debunking that theory too now. I slowed down a ton in my third trimester, but that's probably just natures way of telling us to take it easier to get ready for the baby.

From runningafterbabies on Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 15:55:37 from 208.54.4.252

I don't gain more than 23-25 lbs and my babies are really small, but they are all healthy. Pm me if you have any questions.

From Carina on Tue, Oct 23, 2012 at 16:22:51 from 204.15.86.83

I only gained 20 pounds with my last pregnancy and my baby was 6lbs 15oz. I thought my Dr. was really cautious. He told me to just not run for more than an hour. But one of my best friends ran 15 miles at 34 weeks pregnant, she's due any day, but her baby is fine. It's so hard because every Dr. has a different opinion, but ultimately I think you are right, you know your body and you will do what is best for YOU and your baby!!

From Christi on Wed, Oct 24, 2012 at 16:41:08 from 50.130.153.142

Melody-Hey, thanks for the advice.. Thats good to know you were able to train so far into your pregnancies. I think I will just run by how my body feels. If it is too strenuous I will abviously slow down or not run as many miles. I know that right now I feel better when I run so I will keep it up as long as I can.. Thanks again for sharing what worked for you..

Carina-It's interesting to hear what other Dr's advise. Sounds like your dr was pretty cautious too. I decided I am going to just listen to how my body is feeling and decide what works for me... (btw-you have done a great job getting back into awesome shape since having your baby-I hope I can do the same)

Ran on a treadmill at our hotel in Albuquerque... Decided to do a 3 mile tempo workout today.. After 1.5 warm up splits were 6:25,6:17,5:55... I have to admit this workout was done on a 0% incline level... I always set my treadmill to 1%, but the incline wasn't working... I was amazed at how much easier 0 feels than 1... (It really does make a huge difference) Anyway, I felt really great today and was happy I was able to pick it up on my last mile..(It felt easier than I thought this workout was going to be..) I was not happy the heater was turned on in the workout room and I was right under the vent so it was blowing hot air on me the whole time!! (Yikes! I was probably 12th or 13th overall and the next girl in was about 40-45 seconds behind me. I looked at my results from last year and was about a minute 15 seconds slower this year-but what can I expect at 17 weeks pregnant.. I will take it.. I felt good the whole time-pushing but not too hard, although now I am tired... Won a 75 girftcard to safeway and new shoes so I am happy about that..
