Personal:

I did lots of competitive running growing up. I'm now 23 and have fibromyalgia and CFS. I just finished nursing school and am going back for my MSN in a few months, but I want to get back in shape and be able to run again.

This morning I ran from my house to a big grass field about 2 miles away. Then I did 2 sets of the circuit, and then ran home. My left shin has been bothering me. If I take ibuprophen it doesn't hurt but if I don't it hurts quite a bit. The run felt good. It was hot outside but not too bad. My time was 32:46. (Pegasus 148)

Where on the shin? Your mileage increases have been very aggressive since recovering from your stress fracture, I would have some concern of developing another one in your Tibia. Ibuprofen in known to block the absorption of calcium into the bones and prevent bone growth. It is not given to patients who have bone grafts for that reason. I hope you heal soon!

It hurts on both sides along the bone, Since my stress fracture though I have increased my calcium intake, cut out all cafiene, and reduced how much ibuprophen i take(800 mg 1xday as opposed to 2-3xday). I'm pretty sure that it is muscle,I think I hurt it about 3 weeks ago when I was doing speed work. I was on prednisone for an allergic reaction I had and probably pushed the workout harder than I should have.

have you had a bone scan? You need to make sure that you don't have something go on or you may end up with a permanent injury!!!! Paim is our bodies way of telling us we need to stop!!

I haven't had a bone scan, but It doesn't hurt that bad, so I doubt it is bone. It hasn't been getting worse and seems to be getting a little bit better each day. I'm guessing it's just some shin splints, but I'll keep watching it and if it starts getting worse, I'll back off.

I would not do any more speedwork until the shin stops hurting. In fact, I would not do any speedwork, period, so early in your comeback! What's the rush? Build up slowly, and you'll be ready for x-c season. What is the purpose of speedwork now, anyway? Hope you feel better soon!
