Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

1:02:54.  Beautiful morning -- dark and foggy when I started, and dawn and foggy at the end ;-).  I ran by a dock with a lot of boats and seeing them in the shadows and fog before the sun came up was pretty artistic and lovely.

It was early though -- 5:30AM eastern time, which was 3:30AM my time.  I did feel better all day knowing that I had done my run (although my hamstring was sore sitting in the meeting all day).  My flight was delayed out of DC so I missed my connection into Tucson, so I did not get in until midnight last night - a very long day.  I went through security with the Georgetown basketball team - they were tall!! and, I just have to tell you, they were so polite, clean-cut, and just very very well behaved, it was impressive.

Stomach issues are getting better, much more slowly than I would hope, but at least some progress with the new medication.  A little worse for wear today because of the 8 hours of travel yesterday -- nothing healthy to eat at airports, so I generally don't eat much - a tub of $10 fruit and some almonds ;-), yum.

The biopsy of the mass is benign (yea!), however, the sample did not include the other area that the radiologist was worried about (it is too hard to get to using needle biopsy).  So she and my PCP sent my stuff over to a surgeon to see what he thought - and he wants to do a surgical biopsy (of course he does).  I am so tired of this - and the worst part?  It will mean 3-5 days of not running ... and cross-training is out too - since I can't do anything that involves "jostling" and you can't swim with the stitches.  Anyway ... I might try to at least walk a little, and maybe I will heal faster than they expect.  I have heard that some people can run after just 1-2 days.

I am glad about the one result! Continued prayers for you and your docs and you go through the next biopsy. Sorry you are going through all this. You really are a trooper!

Good news on the first result.

I bet you will bounce back and not have to take 3-5 days off - that is for "normal" people - not those of use who run twice a day and can recover much, much quicker.

You are right Jake! That is what I will believe! Good and bad things about athletes -- we are much more in tune with our bodies, and ask it to do a lot of hard things, so when anything is a little out-of-whack we really feel it -- good news is that we are healthy and can bounce back better!

The other day I was hooked up to machines getting ready to have my "procedure" and my pulse was 45 and my respiration was 16 (pso2 was 100). The anesthesiologist came in and looked at me, made some notes and asked, "so, do you work out a lot?" -- it made me happy, I almost said, "ahhh, you noticed ;-)"

The same thing happened to me the last time I was at the doctor last month. The nurses kept taking my pulse like 4 times and couldn't believe that it was actually 36 - and they put in my chart that I had bradycardia. I was like "leave that out of there - I work really hard to have a pulse that low!" :-)

Being in tune with your body is a great thing - I think it allows you to know when something isn't quite right a lot faster than a typical person would figure it out.

I remember being hooked up for my colonoscopy and trying to lay really still and breath slowly to get my heartrate below 40 and I eventually did. I had nothing better to do so it was a fun game to play.

Thumbs up to benignity. Thumbs down to 3-5 days out. Thumbs up for good and conservative healthcare. That's a net thumbs up ;)

I hardly think expressing frustration with what you have gone through, and over the continued unknown and over an imperfect body at this point is not something to apologize for. Just having your marathon cycle ruined alone is cause for frustration, and that is just one of the effects. Now get back to work ;) Love ya!
