Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

2:02:xx ... first 1/2 was in the 1:04 range, 2nd was 58:xx.  It was HOT (again),  I started at 6:30 and it was already low-to-mid 80's and 95F when I finished.  It was a nice run though, probably a little better than last Sunday, despite the heavy legs (from travel and lack-of-training).

I got to bed late because I was up watching the mens World Championship marathon -- holy cow what a race.   He just opened up a gap at 25K by throwing down a 14:40 5K and never let up!  It really was crazy.  It was 75F with 65% humidity and he just threw down the hammer -- splits below (courtesy of LetsRun.com)

5km 15:58

15km 46:28 (15:07)

AM: (9 miles, 1:18:12).  Ran about 6.5 or so miles at an easy pace and then ran the last 20` at MP.  The same "little over 2 mile" landmark was 18:43 on the way out and 15:40 on the way back.  It was still hot, but at least partially overcast today ... it looks like summer is going to last another month or so here ... I just can't wait until it is under 80 degree lows ;-).

PM: easy 4.

Trying to be brave, but it is hard to concentrate, so I feel like I am drowning in work.  As executor of my Mom's will there are a lot of "details" to work out, probably a good thing as there is little time to sit around and be sad.

I hope you are all running well!!  Happy Tuesday-that-feels-like-a-Monday bloggers!

1:11:08.  Still hot, but I heard from AZMonsoon that next week might be better (maybe some lows in the mid-70s??  that would be SO awesome!).

Happy hump day bloggers!

AM: (10+ miles, 1:26:55).  30:10wu/29:38cd  10 x 45" w/2` recovery.  Was hard, both because it was so hot (95F and sunny) and I am out of shape and not sleeping much.

PM: 4 miles easy.

Hope you are all having a nice week bloggers!!

1:01:43.  Hot, feel pretty bad today ... I am not sure if I am sick, depressed, or both.  On a happier note, I did get to watch TF last night -- not WTF, but the penultimate Diamond League meet in Zurich.  It was pretty cool ... Vivian Cheruiyot, Sally Pearson and Mariya Savinova were winners AGAIN, after only a few days rest ... and on the men's side, Ezekiel Kemboi wowed the crowd AGAIN!

Happy Friday to all of you bloggers -- for those of you that are racing tomorrow -- good luck!!

AM: (8 miles, 1:11:23).  It was a cool 78F this morning -- YIPPEE.  It rained hard last night and finally, after 5 months, it is finally cool in the morning!  I can't tell you how much better it feels.

PM: easy 4.  DRAT!  Huge monsoon storm ruined my PM run.  I am not adverse to running in the rain, but these monsoons are pretty intense -- and it was so dark out that the drivers could not see me - actually, there are 3 cars that are parked on the dirt road in front of our house right now, they can't make it up the hill with the rain as bad as it is.

Can't wait to see how everyone did in their races today!  Happy Saturday bloggers.

Holy Cow, David Rudisha just ran a world leading 800 meters today in 1:41:33!!!

1:59:10 (1:02:33/56:36) AP: 8:56/8:05, last 2 miles hard (I only got a split for the last mile it was 7:04).  It was so much cooler today than last Sunday, it was about 78F at the start and a mere 85F at the end, I was so happy about that.  The humidity was 73% at the start ... but went down considerably as it warmed up.  I am very happy to report that Summer is over.  Although we will still have high temps hovering around 95-98F for a while, the lows are supposed to be in the 70's for the next week -- yippee!!  I might even feel a bit chilled in the morning ;-).

So, right after I posted how the monsoon ruined my PM run last night we lost power and it did not come on until early this morning.  The bad news was that I did not get to watch the Reiti track meet (Rudisha and Kiprock ran amazing races in the 800 and 1500!); the good news was that I got to bed earlier, and made headway on a book I am reading.

I hope you are all doing well bloggers.  I am remembering where I was on this day in 2001, and thinking how I can make the world a better place, that is what I am doing.  Well, in between getting ready for a guest lecture I have to give to a 160 undergrads on Tuesday, getting ready for a lab meeting I have to speak in on Monday afternoon, oh yea, and get ready for class tomorrow ;-).

Happy Sunday.

AM: (9 miles, 1:17:32).  I don't have my exact splits ... but it went something like this: 27:00wu/26:00cd + 10 x 45" w/2` recovery.  I got out by 6:30 and was in a hurry because I was guest lecturing this morning.  Despite working on my lecture for 3 days (it was a "recruitment" talk to undergrads), STILL half of them fell asleep, and I don't think I got any takers ... even though I opened with:

“I keep saying that the sexy job in the next 10 years will be statisticians,” said Hal Varian, chief economist at Google. “And I’m not kidding.”

I did get a few groans when I told them what prerequisites they  needed to take now in order apply to grad school. sigh.

 PM: easy 4 ...

Have a great day bloggers!

1:12:21.  Nice morning, humid (because it rained all night), but in the 70s.  Actually, when I first walked outside I thought, brr ... I might have to get my gloves

;-).

Have a wonderful hump day bloggers.   I am in a hurry, very difficult proofs today in class, it is always the hardest lecture for me (and the students) ...

AM: (11 miles, 1:31:55).  30:14wu/28:26cd  6 x 800 w/400 recovery (3:26, 3:25, 3:24, 3:23, 3:23, 3:23; average 2:30 recovery).   I wasn't sure how I was going to do with these ... last March I ran 3:22, 3:22, 3:20, 3:20, 3:19, 3:19 .... but, it wasn't nearly as hot then (85F and sunny) and I haven't done anything like this since then ... so, I guess I am ok happy; you have to start somewhere ;-).  I met a woman who was coaching a guy doing 400's on the track, he is a professional olympic distance triathlete ... he was pretty fast.  She used to be a professional runner in the 90s (was in the Olympics 3 times).  I actually ran "sprints" with her, as we timed her athlete, Stu.  It was fun!

PM: easy 4.

1:59:36 (1:03:11 out/56:24 back) 9:01/8:03.   This was pretty amazing considering I felt like complete crap from the start.  I was simply hoping to be able to run 9 min pace the whole run ... but somehow, I was able to pick it up at the turn-around.  I think I am fighting a cold, and the lack of sleep of late is not helping my immune system.  I have to work today, but first I need a burrito, then maybe a nap??

I am so impressed by everyones races yesterday!  Yea fastrunning bloggers, you rock!!!

Happy Sunday.

1:15:39.  I don't know how long this was, I just know it was shorter than my usual ~9 mile course (based on Bonnie-9-min-mile pace) so I am calling it 8.5.  I had a meeting that I had to run to so I had a shorter cool-down than usual.  10 x 45"w/2` recovery.

 4 miles easy.

AM: (9 miles, 1:15:06).  scheduled 'workout' was 80` with the last 20` @ MP.   Ran an out-and-back route today - much hillier than my usual 9 miles, but I was in a hurry and this route avoids my horse friends Big Boy and Coco who would expect me to stop and feed them carrots if I went by their corral.  I hit my usual little-longer-than-2-mile landmark in 18:12 (about 40 secs faster than usual), and my second landmark was a little more than a minute faster -- so I estimate I was running about 8:40-8:45 pace on the way out.  Started to pick it up at the turnaround in such a way that I was down to MP by 20` out from my house.  My little-longer-than-2-mile split on the way back was 15:22 (2:50 faster) -- I would guess I was somewhere between 7:25-7:30 pace -- which given the terrain (very hilly) was pretty good.  Not really marathon pace - my marathon pace would be closer to 7:45-7:50 -- but good for a "workout".

PM: easy 4.

Happy Thursday bloggers.

2:03:51 (1:07:14/56:36) ... so the first 7 looks a little slower than usual (4 mins slower actually), that is because I ran into a "friend" (in quotes because I don't really know her well) and she was running with her husband and I ran with them for about 2 - 3 miles.  She doesn't run much but is training for PF Changs 1/2 and her husband actually does run (and pretty well too) but he was running with her to keep her company.  She was super excited to run sub-11 min/mile pace - because she said she was getting really tired when they met up with me and yet was able to hang on!!  yea.  It was nice.  I also "ran" into a co-worker who was riding bikes with her son (we just said "hi").  You can tell it is cooling off by all the people out ;-)  ... it was, in fact, cooler, when I started, but I started a little later (8AM) and it was 87F by the time I finished at 10AM.  Still, we Tucsonans consider it to be a much anticipated cooling trend when the lows are in the 70s and the heat (over 90F) does not kick in until 12 Noon ;-).

Anyway, I ran the last 4 miles at MP, from about 7:45 down to 7:20 pace the last mile.

I hope you are having a great day bloggers!

arrrghh!!  Drat!  Darn!  After nearly 8 years of never missing a day of running (except after abdominal surgery) I miss another day.  I woke up today with food poisoning.  It was horrid. I am feeling a little better now, but it was bad.  I hope have my strength back tomorrow for a jog, but I can't believe I missed a workout day of all days.  Very disappointed.

I hope you are all well bloggers ... be careful out there!

1:27:xx.  Stomach was much better today -- so, I decided to run a "workout".  Debated between my 800s (on the schedule for today) or fartlek (on the schedule for Tuesday).  Decided on the fartlek.  Everything was great.  Then ... about 2 miles from home my lower leg started to ache ... bad, like last year ache, only it was on the lateral side of my tibia and not the medial side ... when the run was over it still ached.  It ached all day.  I pushed, prodded poked, and tried a little "self ART".  Now is it swollen, but it does not hurt unless I flex my foot.  I decided to skip my 2nd run in hopes it will feel better tomorrow ... since the week is sort of a bust because of Tuesday anyway.

On another note.  I posting this everywhere -- so, everyone must have heard right now about both Paula and Deena losing their records (WR and AR in the marathon, respectively) -- well, they didn't actually lose them, they just got rolled back to slower runs for both of them -- because of the new IAAF ruling on women's records not counting if they were run in races with men.  Theoretically, it is because of they fact that they both had men pacers, but still.  Anyway -- the message is, "you can change the rules but you can't change history" - Paula still ran a WR of 2:15... no matter what ... (in my opinion).

I hope you are all doing well, preparing for your weekend races and going strong!!!

Yes!!  My leg hurts only when I flex and point - so, it is a tendon (not bone).  So, I jogged easy for 7 (I did not want to get greedy).  1:02:33.
