3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

Not as fast as last week, but that is probably because it was so freaking hot.  All and all, a good run, I can't complain!

Happy Sunday!

easy 7 ... hilly, a  little on the warm side, even though I had to get out early because I had an early conference call.

sick.  very sick.  I am not sure if it is a tummy virus problem, or food poisoning, but it is not pretty.  No food, hardly any water, all day.  feel pretty bad.

I am going to try to run later this afternoon, but, I am not sure.  I feel pretty dehydrated, and since I have not eaten at all, I am a little dizzy.  I am going to try to get some calories in, and if I feel better I will jog later, otherwise, I will shoot for getting enough calories/water so I can run tomorrow.

YIKES old runningblog buddies.  Yikes.  I can't believe I have not run a step in a week!

I got really sick last Thursday night/Friday morning.  I thought it was a virus, or food poisoning. So, I took Friday off, and then Saturday, and then .... you see the pattern here.  I still don't know exactly what it was, but my doctors think it was a severe GI inflammation/reaction caused by Celebrex (I have a few bad blood markers right now - so I am being monitored).  I was not really able to eat, and was so tired and dizzy, for 5 days.  I am finally eating again, and am regaining some strength.  This morning I actually thought, "maybe, just maybe, a little jog??" - I ended deciding to wait until was a little stronger.  I really felt so bad this weekend, I don't want to go back there.  I lost 7 pounds in about 3 days!

So,  I was on Celebrex as part of my downward spiral into middle age.  I have autoimmune arthritis, my body is attacking my own joints.  The Celebrex is supposed to help with pain, and I am now on Methotrexate (a disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs)) which should slow the degeneration of my joints.  Degeneration!  crud!   They have changed my anti-inflammatory to a GI safe one, which I probably won't take for a little while, and I only need to take it as needed anyway - I will try to avoid it when possible.

Anyway -- no modification to my running routine yet, but it will likely happen sometime in the future, it is a degerative (and chronic - sounds bad, huh? chronic!) disease, with no cure.  BUT -- on the bright side, I am healthy, I can take drugs to slow the process down, AND, I think I am going to check into some diets that also have an impact on lowering inflammation ... so I can at least have some control over this.

So, that's what life is like in the 5th decade. Hmmm ... It is sort of funny, but a friend told me one time, "the 50's suck, all you have to do is survive them, the 60's are much better :)" -- oh boy, can't wait :)

Miss you bloggers, hope the pavement and trails are being kind to you.  I will be joining you again very soon!!

Little jog. Soooo good to be out running again.  Very grateful.  My blood tests showed an acute inflammation (CRP was very high).  So, I am trying not too overdo it, but I really *need* my running fix!

Have a great Friday bloggers!!

Not as slow as one would have imagined, but not quick either :-)   again, just happy to be out there!  I am on the mend.  Now, we wait to see if the drugs work (supposed to take up to a month), hopefully with few side effects!

Happy Sunday bloggers!

Working to get back!  I don't think I will run doubles this week, but I will give it a shot next week.  Started my methotrexate this week (it is a once/week drug), hit me hard today (pretty much expected-as that is what they told me to expect), but I am hoping tomorrow will be better.  I have to take prescription folate every day, I might try upping my current dose to see if it helps with the fatigue ... We'll see, hoping the treatment isn't worse than the disease :-) .  I just wanna run, bloggers!

Hope you are running well!

Do you what day it is?  Oh yes, you do, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWBhP0EQ1lA

I ran by one my old friends Dover the horse today!  I haven't been running this route because I have been too busy (I am usually in a huge hurry in the mornings) - well, I am going to make time.  Darn it, life is just too precious to miss out on little things you enjoy.  Like keeping track of you all!!!

I won't lie, I am sort of dragging through my runs this week.  I am super tired during the day, wake up in the middle of the night because of the pain in my back, and I can't tell what is from just getting back from my severe intestinal problems from last week, from the arthritis, and what are side effects from the methotrexate.  But, I can run, and I am grateful for that!  My main goal this week is 90 min run on Sunday!

Have a good rest of the week bloggers!

1:35:54. Beautiful day today!! Only 87F, 40% humidity (which is humid for us!).  So happy to able run again!  Much better than last Sunday.

Great races today in NY (5th ave mile) , loved seeing Jenny Simpson take the win!  I was rooting for Bernard ( because he is from Tucson, and he is allies best friend and all) - but I like Nick Willis, so I am happy for him too!

Dean and I are thinking of visiting his Mom in Indiana for Thanksgiving -- which happens to be the week after NCAA XC champs (in Terre Haute) - so, we are thinking  about going early to watch the races!!! How fun will that be? (answer: super fun!!!)

Happy Sunday bloggers!

1:19:34 -- whoothoo.  Usually, the day after my methotrexate is the worst -- nauseated, tired, etc.  Today -- not so bad!  Felt good on the run, yea!  Still trying to navigate how much to do (e.g. running wise) this week.  I want to start adding second runs, but I am sort playing it by ear.  I might not push it today and see how the whole day goes.

Have a great day, bloggers!

Fall is here, Fall is here!!  It has been in the 60s this week, high 60s but still!  Fall is here.

I am excited, can you tell?  I am very happy.  It hasn't been in the 100s for 5 days!  Sigh of relief, everyone here is happy!

AM: 7 miles

PM: 3.5 miles

All "easy" miles. I feel pretty good by the end of these runs, but man, I am just so freaking tired.  Partly the disease, partly a side effect of the treatment for the disease, and partly I just am so stressed out from work that I am not sleeping -- this too shall pass -- I hope at least 2/3 willl :)

So, last night Dean was out very late.  I won't go into details but it involved students, a bar, and an eventual taxi ride home.  Luckily, he doesn't do this very often, and he called (and took a taxi home), so he is forgiven :).  Anyway - I was going to bed and found a scorpion in the hallway right outside our bedroom doorway.  This is the second one in that very spot in 2 weeks -- but last time Dean caught it and threw it outside (I ask him to do this as even though I don't like them, I don't like killing them) -- I think I need to sweep my hallway, I wonder if they came in on the ball of dust that was next to them? (ha ha).  Anyway, I debated for a few minutes about whether or not I could just go to bed and forget it was there.  But, then I thought, "probably not" (I would likely have dreams about it climbing into my bed), and I did not want to chance Dean stepping on it when he got home - especially if he took his shoes off before he came into the bedroom.  So, I sort of freaked out (stood and hyperventilated) and then went to the kitchen to get the "scorpion removal kit" -- a tupperware bowl and lightweight (thin) magazine (I think it was my insurace booklet from my work).  Then I sort of stood there and looked at the scorpion before emiting a tiny little scream and putting the bowl on top of him/her.  Well, he/she escaped and started running (crawling sounds like too slow of a description) down the hall and towards my bedroom.  I screamed more loudly this time -- loudly enough that all the animals came running to see what was up (two large dogs and a cat).  One of the dogs, Jake, saw the scorpion and started toward it, and I screamed (a little too loudly I think, in retrospect) for him to stop and sit.  So, they all sat. and were just watching the scorpion run around.  I put the bowl (more firmly this time) on top of it and then all four of us just stood and stared at the bowl, while the scorpion ran around underneath.  Reality TV at its finest, I tell you.  The animals continued to watch me as I (squealing the whole time mind you) slid the paper/pamphlet underneath the bowel.  Then I stopped and we all stared some more, until I gathered enough courage to flip the bowel over -- luckily trapping the scorpion inside.  I then firmly, and with great care, ran to the back down and threw everything outside -- quickly slid the door closed (a sliding glass door) - and hyperventilated some more while I watched the scorpion "scamper" (not really a good verb for what they do actually) away -- with my three pets standing right behind me, dogs tails wagging, and the cat sitting and staring.   Apparently, I provided much needed entertainment for everyone last night ... but, unfortunately, after all that screaming, hyperventilating, and running, I was wide awake :).   THIS is why people shouldn't drink, they should, instead, stay home to take care of errent vemonous creatures that might be lurking in every corner.  Let this be a lesson to you all.

Happy weekend, bloggers.

1:52:43.  It was such a nice day.  I got out late -- but it is Fall -- and it still was only 87F when I finished!  yippee!   Instead of my hilly run, I did a weird version of a few of my morning runs all strung together -- it was still hilly, but not the same level of "grinding" hills.

Very happy with the progress on the health front.  I am getting better every week! yea!

Happy taper week bloggers!
