Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

AM: (7.5 miles, 1:06:53).  Oh man, what a beautiful day, perfect -- cloudy, 45F, my legs were rested and feel oh so good.  I SOOOO wanted to do a workout.  But, Greg said no.  He said I am still down this week ... he wants me a to get a little "out-of-shape" so I don't peak early ... so I am trying to be good.  Even so, I was about 30 seconds/mile faster than my usual "easy" pace.  That is the good thing about running by effort, I don't always know how far I run, but I know what easy effort is ;-).

PM: easy 4.

I slept really well last night, probably to make up for 2 nights of very little sleep and over 16 hours of flying in 48 hours.  On the way home from Philadelphia I traveled with about 40 UofA students -- everyone was coming back from Christmas break (yesterday was the first day of classes).  It was pretty funny being part of a very very young "cool" crowd that comes back to school on the midnight flight ;-).  It was not that enjoyable yesterday morning though -- when I had to get up after 4 hours of sleep and teach.  Despite all that though, I am feeling oh so much better ... I am still congested, but every day seems to get better ... I can't wait to see if my workouts will improve now that I am not sick!!

I hope you are doing well bloggers!!

so glad to hear you are feeling better. good job only running 11.5 miles today -- that's the perfect recipe for getting out of shape ;) (really though, i understand what you mean and i think it makes a lot of sense).

good luck with the new semester!

ha ha ... Hi allie!

I was thinking about our conversation about peaking a couple of years ago (well, more about timing of big workouts) -- and, I agree, it does make a lot of sense. Even though I was a little nervous about the number of 20+ longs runs in my last cycle, given how my legs have felt the past few days I think it was just right ... this makes me a lot more confident about March.

So ... I am also planning on coming out for the 5K in June -- maybe I can PR there ;) Hope all is going well! where is the Kamikaze marathon?

From allie on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 16:49:54 from 161.38.218.168

i was actually thinking about that conversation as well, just yesterday to be exact. i was laughing at myself for my weekly 20 miler/big workout combos where i was PRing at every distance and then wondering why i was stale in my races. your advice has been so helpful for me these past two years. my approach to training and racing has changed for the better (at least i think so). yes, i still got injured, but i like to blame that on being weak rather than being stupid. :)

the kamikaze marathon was originally supposed to be the salt lake city marathon, but they are having major organizational and financial issues right now and it could end up being a disaster. so the new kamikaze marathon will be provo city the first week of may. james and i are going to run our dream marathon paces to failure (2:25/2:45) as an experiment. it's stupid and it's suicide, but we are both curious to see what happens. i guess it will really be more of a training run, as neither of us expect to finish at our goal times -- we just want to see how far we can go and experiment with different fueling and pacing strategies. knock some sense into me if this is a terrible idea...

i am glad you are feeling confident about your training heading into your march marathon. andrea and i were talking about you yesterday -- we're both so impressed by your consistency and discipline in spite of your ultra busy schedule (not to mention your impressive times at every distance).

i am so glad you will be coming out to the 5k in june. we are going to make the course short so that everyone runs a PR and has magical memories of that day ;)

From Bonnie on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 17:02:45 from 128.196.228.134

hmmm. I really am not a fan of the "run to failure", but that is just me. If you are not planning any big marathons within 2 months or so of doing said experiment it probably won't hurt (well, it will hurt, badly, but not any future marathon ;-)).

I am so glad that I was a virtual part of the AJA run ... maybe that is why I was feeling so inspired and peppy today!

I am sure we will all have magical memories of the day anyway - but a PR for everyone would be such a bonus!!

I still think you should think about this dress: http://www.oiselle.com/shop/bridal, just think about how much use you could get out of it: 1) the special day, 2) every Halloween race, 3) every marathon you run forevermore (to ensure you have the camera's on you the whole time - you will have to "lie by ommission", meaning don't tell them it is your wedding day, but don't tell them it isn't -- but heck it would be worth it for us spectators).

I was thinking the same thing...11.5 is letting yourself get out of shape and running 7.5 in 1:06? haha! Great workout today!!!

From Bonnie on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 17:27:03 from 128.196.228.134

Hi Steam8 ... I guess it was an easier than what my "mind" wanted to do ;-). Now I need to go work on my calf raises!!

From allie on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 17:28:38 from 161.38.218.168

i love that dress :)

i'm definitely not a fan of "run to failure" either, which is why i have never done it (i've certainly failed, but never on purpose). i don't want to fail and i don't want to quit (i won't quit, but i will likely fail). plans are still up in the air for summer racing, so we figured it's a good time. it's not often you get to, or even want to, "experiment" during a marathon. we'll see...i reserve the right to change my mind!

steam - can you teach me how to grow leg hair like that? it's such a great winter accessory.

Bonnie! Hope the congestion continues to improve. I bet more sleep will definitely help!
