Finished 1 place higher than last year. There were 1000 finishers. Last year it was 78C at the start and very hot. This year it was COLD, about 48C at race start and cloudy. Course was very muddy and had an extra river crossing. Was 45:36 last year i think so a definite improvement even though it could just be due to the colder weather. Was fun to get out and race again! Hope I can continue to get back into shape.

Check it out. I got henry to join the blog. And im trying to make a comeback with the mohawk hudson river half marathon as the main goal race. Its on 10/10/10. What do you say? Up for a challenge?

hey haynes!

good to see you back on here. 10/10/10 is a pretty cool date to run a half. I can't see any reason to say no. If i can't pr on that course i may as well retire

ran up topstone mtn from parents house. on way back at 8.11 miles decided to time trial up gallows hill to top of whortleberry. Turned out to be 0.48 miles from bottom to top. Just over 300ft of vertical. Ran it in 4:35 (9:29 pace). Could definitely run it faster but will be hard to break 4min. will be a good goal i think.

decided to go out to eat than run long. 2.7 miles total with a time trial up gallows hill/whortleberry hill. I wish I knew the exact vertical but the GPS just isn't accurate enough. Ran the 0.48 miles from top to bottom in 3:55 (8:14 pace), shattering yesterday's time of 4:35. Probably went faster because i didn't run over 8 miles before doing this and had my brother pace me at the top half.

1hr 47 min run. started pretty slow but at mile 3 or so there's this 250ft climb in 1/2 mile and about half way up i saw a runner ahead of me. of course i got motivated and 5 sec from passing this person, the girl stopped at the top of the hill to either fix her ipod or maybe was doing hill repeats. anyways, that concentration of going faster got me in the groove. i decided to run on single track in huntington park today for a bit. ended up going 12.2

since haynes is keeping track of his weight i should be fair and let him know what i weigh to be fair. i wouldn't want to have an unfair advantage over him in the half marathon.

post run weight 160.2 lbs. i'm probably 159.9 if i was completely naked. it's nice to be here!

i think i've lost weight mostly because i've been too busy at work to eat 3x a week at bertuccis and have all you can eat rolls and a pizza every lunch. the subway diet ~4x a week seems to be working. i cut out the meal deal chips. i'm hoping to get down to 155lb in the next month.

course is 610ft starting elevation up to 770ft after to mile 1. Then a gradual flat/downhill to mile ~3.5 of 525ft (awesome easy section), then uphill (not awesome easy section) to ~700ft at 4.5 then downhill home. total elevation gain 282ft.

i know, i still have 65 minutes to run 0.7 miles. don't worry, i'm far too lazy for that. hope your joints/legs feel better. running 85mpw is impressive and probably excessive for only a 1/2 marathon. i think you mixing it up is good so you can give your body a rest but still get good cardio and burn calories.

Of course i put my gps watch out then left it when i drove to huntington. I had to go back the next day to get dsitances. Ran 4.2 mile loop then decided to push the same loop again. Ran in the 33 mins. Mostly good carriage roads with a pretty bad hill in there. Felt ok. Cooled down around lake to make sure i at least went over 10. remember that your 70mpw on trails is at least worth my 80 on roads probably a bit more. time wise it is definitely more. For a 12 mile day I spent 1:30-1:40 running. And a lot of these you are doing as singles which makes it much harder.

The workouts of Haynes have been scaring me. Especially his last 6x 1 mile. I had to at least attempt a track workout. I decided to bring Kristin along in separate cars so she could leave after she was done with her workout. I was explaining to her Daniel's training method and all that the great coach Haynes had taught me. She wants to run a 10k this year and also break the 8 min mile. Last year she ran 8:28 with a 28:59 5k. I suggested we try to run 4x400 at 1:55 pace with 200m walk recovery. She was very nervous and didn't want to go around the whole track the first time but did 1min 49.3sec for lap1 (7:13 pace), then 1min 51 sec for the next 2. The last one she ran 1min 41.6 sec, 6:44 pace, picking it up for the last 200. Not bad for a first workout. Of course as we ran back to our cars and she left, a caravan of cars came to the track and i was dreading it being a track meet or something. Luckily it turned out to be a lacrosse game. There weren't may people there at the start. My goal was 8x400 at 75sec pace. The first lap was 81.6 sec!!! I was kind of in shock at how slow i was. I picked it up and ran 76.6sec for the next one. Better, but still kind of not happy. Then I found the workout pace and ran 75.1, 74.9,75.3, 75.1 (actually .26miles), 75.0, 75.5 (actually .27 miles).

It was really annoying how this very overweight man stood between the first and second land of the track when he saw me doing a workout. I had to go in lane 4 for the straightaway at the end. At least no one kicked me out. I finished before the game started but very annoying. Cooled down for just over a mile, then rushed home to watch world cup soccer that i thought started at 1:30. Only coverage started then so i got to run some more to go over 70 for the week.

Looks like your girl has a 7:30 in her at least. Probably 6:50 after getting used to the mechanics of going fast.

For your workout how much recovery were you taking? I think getting some speed is good early on in training, but no lactic acid buildup so full or near full recovery is good (equal distance, twice the time). You should also read henry's blog at henry.fastrunningblog.com. He has had several scary workouts and a 17:17 5k recently. Im doing a 'workout' today but its really just to relearn the mechanics of running at 5:20 (vo2max) pace because its sets of 2min,1min,30sec with equal time recovery so it should be very easy.

From big legs on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 15:31:46 from 173.2.120.87

yeah, kristin is learning to run faster. i was very impressed with her speed in the last 200m. For my workout, I just jogged a 400. My pace around the track got slower towards the end. How are you deciding what workouts to do? you just following a training plan from daniels?

From wheaton on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 18:06:25 from 68.1.178.103

Yeah, following the 5k-15k daniels plan because the other option is half marathon/marathon and that plan is really for the full marathon in my opinion. This first week of workouts was a bit of a warmup, but I also ran them a bit harder than I should have. Next week I have 10-12x400[400] and 40min tempo gonna shoot for 6:06 pace at the red rooster ramble and keep going till I hit 40min.

Decided to follow Daniels' training log and be a couple workouts behind Haynes. May not do all of them but probably at least try one of them a week. Felt kind a little nausea at work today, almost definitely from stress. Was looking forward to the track workout though. Went to the high school track which is a really beautiful setting. Ran 1.5 miles on the cross country trail which is gravel in the woods for warmup. Did 5x1mile (really 1600). Was shooting for 6:05 thinking it wouldn't be too difficult to run 90's but was I wrong! Ran 6:13, 6:12, 6:13, 6:17, 6:16 with about 1min 10sec rest in between. Felt chest pains and thought i was going to drop dead of a heart attack as early as the second mile. I thought someone would find me dead the next morning. I guess it was just a cramp or the too many pretzels i ate right before.

I forgot how annoying the track can be after work, with the sun beaming down in your eyes on one side of the track and sweating profusely while having to close your eyes. The back side was cooler but it just felt hot and annoying. Will not wear my brooks beasts for any sort of track workout. wanted to save my old track shoes from wear but felt much too slow today.

I'm hoping my legs were just tired from the ~2h trail run yesterday and the 400 workout on sat. I was actually impressed i could hit 75's still. Didn't feel like i was going fast at all today but just couldn't move my legs even when i wanted to. I'll have to come back to this one to redeem myself.

Yeah, speed workout, 13+ miles on trails, and then lactate threshold workout prob not the best idea. You will still get most of the benefit from it if you take some easy days now. But it isn't fun to not do as well as you can. And with this kind of workout "cruise intervals" daniels calls them I like to go out on the first one super easy and then pick up the pace throughout the workout. For some reason that feels a lot better mentally and physically it feels about the same.

closed on house yesterday so didn't run and also thought i needed a break even though i wasn't sore or anything. Did workout 3 week 7 of the daniels' running formula book. I pretty much copied what Haynes did but slower. Did 6x (600m (200m recovery), 400m (100m recovery), 200m (100m recovery). Looked at what pace I should run for a 4:57 mile which is my PR from 2008 and saw (if i'm calculating right) that I should run 2:10 for the 600m, 87sec for the 400m, and 43sec for the 200m.

Ran 1.3 mile warmup on trails at high school. My brother actually came along to run with me (or just do what he could).

splits:

2:12, 88, 44

2:11, 81, 41

2:06, 87, 41

2:06, 84, 43

2:09, 84, 43

2:08, 85, 44

I think these would be considered VO2 max but maybe threshold.

I wore my brooks racing shoes and of course got a blister on my right little toe by repeat set number 4 which was annoying. Felt really good today like it was pretty easy. I felt a tiny burn starting at set 5 but could have run more. Some russian guy was there running and said he used to be good, he said I had good endurance and speed but need to lean forward more and run on the ball of my foot.

Cooled down 1.3 miles on trail.

Went to kristin's house and did 2.4 miles at huntington with her.

I hate to say it but you calculated paces based on 1500m time not mile time. Based on 4:57 mile time you should run 2:02, 81, and 40.

From big legs on Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 07:46:39 from 173.2.120.87

well, at least they weren't hard running so slow and i can't run 4:57 now anyways :(

From wheaton on Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 07:52:51 from 68.1.178.103

Its good to get some stepping stone workouts in. I did that 3x4x200 at like 37-40 with a few 33's thrown in a few weeks before I really started workouts. And any running at a decent pace is good even if it doesn't stress the cardiovascular system it is training your neuromuscular system to run fast relaxed.

From big legs on Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 08:04:23 from 173.2.120.87

Congrats on the house closing. If you want, I can set out a training plan for you with paces and everything. I thought I taught you the principles that would allow you to make your own. But I enjoy doing that. In fact, tuesday I am gonna be starting my drive home starting early. If you want to do a prework run I could be out there and join you for that one run.

From big legs on Thu, Jun 17, 2010 at 20:59:40 from 173.2.120.87

yeah, i guess you didn't teach me the principles well enough :)

perhaps you were holding back your knowledge to have an edge...

I'd definitely enjoy you putting a schedule together for me. I'm actually looking forward to track work since that's the only way to get faster. i hate the blisters though i always seem to get from the turns, i don't really know how to avoid that since i never get blisters anywhere else.

would love to do a run with you tuesday. let me know what time you think. i'm supposed to be at work by 8am, but i could go in a little late for this special occasion. there are some great trails where i live so let me know what time you'd want to start and how far. i'd be up for anything as early as you want. Probably need to be at work by 9am though.

How do you need to get ready and get to work after a run? I don't really want to leave before 4am lol so I could be there at 6:30 i think. What is your address?

Until I can get something on excel your next workout will be speed with lots of recovery. Do your warmup and at least do dynamic stretches (leg swings in front, leg swings sideways if you know what I mean), striders are gonna be part of the workout here. First 4 controlled cruising but focus on relaxing and swinging your arms, next 4 accelerating to near top speed then decelerating, then another 4 using the first 25m to accelerate then all out sprint focus on form and arm swinging can start to slow down anytime after 75m. Take a few minutes walk between these, seriously, otherwise it misses the point. When training true speed its for your CNS not your aerobic system. Then 4x3x200 with 200m recovery between reps and 400m recovery between sets. Try to hit each set negative like 37, 35, 33. cooldown and dynamic stretches again (otherwise you will get even more stiff from this workout).

wouldn't call these easy miles because i ate tofu and broccoli from bethel chinese kitchen. the first 2.4 miles with kristin was fine but running on my own after was horrible, the sickness of the heavy soy sauce and the high 80's heat was almost unbearable. Not to mention it was super buggy out. i stopped to pee and got bit numerous times and i tried to run while peeing because i was swarmed by all these gnats that seemed to number in the hundreds. I also fell once and immediately heard multiple buzzing in my ear as the flies tried to get an easy meal. having to watch every game of the world cup kind of ruins the running schedule. i hate running late. it's much better to get it over with. was seriously out there for almost 2hrs and accumulated only 9 miles at huntington.

wanted to wake up early and trail run at huntington before work. just not possible with the 15 min round trip of driving. got 3.0 in on a pretty hilly loop, ended up running down gallows hill and up limekiln. wasn't super stiff and was able to go under 10 min mile which is good for me and my morning jog. Had a few minutes to stretch out after which helped my planned workout during lunch.

Since i have limited time these days and going to a track takes to long and i don't even feel like i have time to stretch, i've been doing tempo workouts as my primary stress. I think these are probably the most important for the half marathon and long trail races but i could be wrong. Warmed up for 0.12 miles or 1min so i could time my 10k on the treadmill. I hate being off on the distance when running and having to get to 6.32 instead of 6.2. Psychologically it's bad. Anyways, decided to try to beat my previous treadmill workout time of 38:45. I started the first 3 miles in 6:11 instead of 6:18 and felt fine. I realized i would have to go faster if i wanted to break 38min. I decided to do the next 3 miles in 6:03 and for the last 1/4 mile went under 6min pace. Total time 37:57. Was definitely glad to be done but didn't feel all that bad.

After work ran 1.61 miles with kristin on whortleberry because didn't have more time.

That's worth a 1:20:15 or better. Good job. Wish my training were going as well. There is just nowhere here that I can join a gym for a short period of time so no treadmill and that means 80s-90s and humid.

You are holding back on us. Luckily I regularly browse all of the recent results from races across the nation and surprise surprise I saw a familiar name. 29:23 for 5 miles very solid. Were you trying to PR or did you just tempo? How was the weather? the course? Tell me these things and ill fudge up a half marathon expected time to go with it.

Looked around at races to do over the weekend in cape cod. Found only 1 (a 5 mile race) one town from where i was staying. Was hoping to simply go under 30 minutes. Even brought my race shoes in case i did a track workout or something. racing is so much better than having to do a tempo run or track workout by yourself. I did a 1.51 mile pre race warmup and found out that the course was going to be extremely hilly. There were at least 3 hills all with at least 50ft rises and the course was out and back. There were ~400 finishers so a surprisingly large field. I went out almost with the lead pack, i was back about 15 sec after the first mile which i ran in 5:45. It was uphill so i felt pretty good about it. Got to mile 2 in 11:55. Also uphill. I was running with 2 guys in 7-9th place up the last hill before the turnaround and one guy pulled away a bit and i pulled away from the other guy. At the turnaround it was clear how close the rest of the field was and i said to myself, crap, i feel ok but not that great cause it was kind of hot, 75-80C and there were about 15 people within 30 sec of me. 2 of them were girls, and one especially fit looking girl was no more than 15 sec back. CRAP! i just kept running my own race hoping no one would try anything. i heard no footsteps which was good and then with about 2 miles to go i heard some people yell "GO EMMA" and first woman. surprisingly no one in the crowd urged her to catch me. there were a couple of cheer crowds and aid stations and i'd go by and then 5 sec later i'd hear routing for the girl. With about a mile to go she pulled even with me. i said good job but i didn't really mean it, i was not going to go down easily. usually when someone comes from behind late in the race you have no chance. i matched her speed and then pulled a second in front of her, taking the shortest lines i could. there was 1/3 of a mile left and i could see the crowd. i didn't have much left and i started feeling a little sick in the stomach with the exertion. i made the last turn and looked back as i pushed it, YES! I was pulling away. I looked back several times just to make sure because i didn't want to hurt anymore than i had to. It turned out she was only 20! Whatever, i'll take my 8th place finish and victory over all females :)

Race turned out to be 4.87 miles according to my gps. I was proud of my 6:02 pace avg which held steady with the very hilly course.

later in the day ran about 2.7 at cape cod national sea shore.

ok i'm proud of myself because i found out that the girl i beat has run a 4:55 mile which is better than my PR and has run a 16:40 5k on the track which crushed my PR.

Came through the 5k at 18:35 and thought how i could so run at least my PR right now of 17:45. Last 1/4 picked it up to just under 6 pace again and finished in 29:57. was stressed out about performing on my home turf and almost decided not to race the night before. woke up tired and groggy. got to the race and did a pre race warmup across the field for about 1.2 miles total. parking lot already full and there looked like at least 5 people who were skinnier than me and looked fast. kristin came with me and i told her i'd probably only finish 10th. even in my trail racing shoes during warmup i could barely muster a 9 min mile and some guy caught me going to pee across the field. it was pretty hot and what made matters worse is that one guy looked super fast.... i would notice later at the starting line that he had a syracuse cross country tatoo on his leg. There was a 52 yr old who has beaten me in the last yr although i beat him this year at a race and also another young 50 something who has beaten me in a half marathon and 5k in the past yr. let's say crushed me. i really wasn't feeling like this was going to be a good day. anyways, we started on the flat carriage road for half a mile...the course map was posted on line so i knew what i was getting into. in the first 1/2 mile the syracuse runner put on what seemed like 20 sec. i said to the 52 yr old running with me "wow" and he told me the guy could run a 31min 10k on the road. the course turned onto a technical mtn bike trail and the 52 yr old sprinted down the hill right before it to be leading into the single track. i immediately passed him because i was far superior on the technical terrain and somehow gained on the syracuse runner. i pulled to within 10 sec at the 1.5 mile mark. he sprinted away though going probably 4:30 pace on a carriage road and i didn't see him at the turn off to the 5k and 10k course. I was feeling pretty good and it helped knowing to keep pushing on uphills when i knew were the resting points were. i had run so many times on these trails that i knew all the lines. there was this horrible section that went over underground wires. literally 4 uphills and downhills of 100ft all in a row over rocky terrain with it being so steep you couldn't really run down it. I thought i would see the runner up front. i didn't and was kind of in shock how i could see 2 mins ahead. i was determined not to look back to see where the other runners were. By mile 4.5 i was getting very tired but kept pushing. skipping to the end...the guy in front took a wrong turn onto the 5k course and got disqualified. so i actually won! my first victory ever.  38 starters including women but who cares. 38 runners in the 5k who i was ahead of too. what's even better is my time is listed as 47:25 online when i ran something like 48:05. The next fastest runner was only 49:18. He ran 2:52 at Boston last year. Cooled down 1.1 miles had horrible blisters from racing shoes as usual.

ran on treadmill after work. last speed work before escarpment trail run on sunday. weather looks to be cool which is good since i don't think i have the endurance i used to and the heat would make it far more obvious. maybe thunderstorms though which sucks.

warmed up 1 mile, did 40 min tempo run...was unsure what speed to go then decided to gradually increase speed. Started first 10 min at 6:11 pace, then second 10 minutes 6:07 pace, 3rd 10 min 6:03 pace, minutes 30-35 (6:00 pace), minutes 35-40 (5:56 pace). Did not feel too  hard which was good. definitely getting fitness up. the two fans i used certainly helped.

cooled down 1 mile.

I had previously done this race in '08 which was without a doubt my best year racing due to the epic coaching of Haynes who has since abandoned me although he promised to give me a training plan...

I finished 6th in '08 with a time of 3hrs 26 min. I had stayed overnight at a hotel but decided to just drive up this year because it's only about 2hr 15 min. Thunderstorms were in the forecast but held off. Temp was pretty reasonable. I said hi to a few people i recognized and before i knew it the race was climbing 1800ft in the first several miles. I was in 6th place up to the top of the climb and was definitely pushing it. a large number of people were behind me half way up the climb but they were dropped. One guy eclipsed me on the downhill but i was in no mood to take risks on the slightly wet rocks. All the fast guys were smart and did not wear shirts or hip belts for extra weight. I was not smart. Another couple of guys caught me on the first downhill but one got dropped. One surged slightly ahead. As I climbed to the highest point of the course a past winner, now in his 50's began to catch up from out of nowhere. This section gained 1200 feet in 0.9 miles (so i've read) up to the high point of 3940ft. I caught the guy in front on the downhill and then we ran together. There was much chatting and i know i dogged the mid section of the course. I could have pushed more i think but it was hard to really get into a good rhythm on the sketchy terrain when i've been doing so much treadmill running. With 4.2 miles to go i had two guys right behind me. I had overtaken one in '08 on this section and it was perfect for me. I put a good 3 mins on both of them on the last downhill. This is the only section of the course i like. no longer overgrown and a lot fewer little rocks, more boulders and big drops. With about 1.5 miles to go i saw another runner in the distance. i was sure i would overtake him but could never make up the distance. lost out on 6th by 22 sec. winner (ben nephew) was ridiculous as usual running 2:58:59 to take his 10th title while i ran 3:29:22. At least i was still under 3:30. Very happy with my run considering i've done no long runs at all and didn't feel like i pushed myself all that much. Have told myself this is a race i will do only every other year due to how demanding it is. My left toenail felt excruciating pain such that i have never felt when i washed off in the lake. Some horrible blister or something was going on under there. 2 days later my quads are still sore. Will hopefully run on wed though. .

Was short on time cause going to dinner. had planned on first running on treadmill during lunch, but REALLY was so unappealing that i just couldn't do it. Then i was going to run after work on treadmill but it still remained unappealing. Ended up running up to the bench lookout at terre haute. Decided to time trial. Took a slight short cut to make the full distance 1.83 miles instead of the standard 1.86. Got to the top in 16min 32 sec (9:04 pace). Found out that almost exactly 1yr ago i did the 1.86 miles in 16min 27 sec.

Have been stretching my right tendon behind my knee and it felt much less tight today. it has been very bothersome for a couple weeks now. hopefully this hard run will get me back into running fast again. it's so hard after a devastating race like escarpment to have the energy and drive like before.

hey, im finally back running consistently and now back posting on my blog. Just wanted you to know. Also apparently the half marathon is full and I emailed the race director begging and giving him our story from the full 2 years ago and told him we are in good shape but no go. So we are gonna have to look for a replacement. Im working on that now.

From big legs on Wed, Aug 18, 2010 at 22:35:52 from 68.198.227.192

i must say i'm kind of relieved...i'm not the same after escarpment, the motivation to run fast and do workouts isn't there right now. we could always do hogsback again. it really wasn't that hilly. you could probably even win that one.

also, did you ever get the wedding invite, you missed the rsvp date!

From wheaton on Wed, Aug 18, 2010 at 22:42:39 from 69.245.57.103

Oh damn. Yes I did get the invite. Sorry I missed the RSVP. Its at home and im in nashville is the problem. Im coming. I'll send it out this weekend. What do you think about newport half marathon oct 17th?

From big legs on Fri, Aug 20, 2010 at 21:44:39 from 68.198.227.192

glad you're coming. definitely send out the invite this weekend. Are you going to bring your gf? Also what were you and (possibly your guest) planning on eating. steak, sea bass, or veg risotto?

I could see doing the newport half marathon but i REALLY need to get my act together and i just don't see that happening. i need you here to run with. arg! plus it's tough getting ready for the wedding and the house thing.

warmed up 0.5 miles then did a time trial to the bench overlook at terre haute. was a bit sticky but apparently warming up before going as hard as you can makes you go faster. i got through the first mile, the top of climb one ~350 vertical feet in 8:01. i admittedly was dead at that point. touched bench in 15:58, breaking my previous record of 16:27 set last year. and faster than the 16:32 i ran on a shortcut trail a couple days ago. ran back down on a different trail for 2.3 miles.

pm ran after work time trial to terre haute bench. it was cool out in the upper 60's and i figured it was as good a day as any to go for my pr up the mtn. warmed up 0.7 miles, had to poop in woods. did. had tp which was good. even had hand sanitizer in the car. anyway so i decided i would be more conservative and not stupidly go out too fast then die in the last 1/2 mile uphill. I held back a little and got to the 1 mile mark (the top of the first hill) in 8:02. i remember last week i got here in 8:01. didn't feel gone yet like last time. got to the bottom of the second hill in ~9:52. felt pretty good on second climb and touched bench in 15:40! 18 sec faster than last week. i did have my trail racers so that certainly helped as did the cool weather and low mileage. there were a couple of annoying downed trees that made me end up going 1.88 miles instead of the normal 1.86. (8:20 pace today)

ran back down for 4.45 miles.

ran at aspetuck with haynes. did not know what time we were meeting, sometime after 4pm i had told him but he texted me at 245 that he'd be at the trailhead at 3:30. I had just eaten about 1000 calories and still had a huge plate of gnocchi that there was no way i was going to control myself and not eat. i didn't have running shoes or running shorts but decided just to go with the shorts i had on. my 3yr old saucony shoes were actually quite comfortable. it was lots of fun running with haynes and was surprised that after mile 4 he hit the wall going up a hill that topped out at 420ft. To be fair, the climb was a whopping 220ft vertical gain and he did make it over 100 before he needed a break :)

he had to stop a few more times and we just walked it in at the end. miss running with haynes. hopefully we can plan a few runs in the future.

4.7 mile rock lot loop am. so much easier to wake up when you only ran 2 miles the day before.

pm did terre haute time trial after 1/2 mile warmup. throat has been bothering me a little but not too badly the last few days. i felt a little sick but not too bad. There was a bow hunter practicing on targets and had a jeep with a confederate flag. i ran very quickly by this section and got to the first hill in 2:21. Got to the top of the first hill in 4:17, to the top before it started going down in 7:46. To the bottom before second major climb in 9:35 (25 sec ahead of previous record). Gave back a few seconds on the last hill to finish in 15:18 (21 sec PR!).

I seriously don't know how i'm getting faster with fewer miles.

Ran a few more miles but didn't have my gps. had to walk on some of the motorbike trials i was exploring because they were just devastating with the ups and downs.

i'll just give myself 10 for the day, i did at least that.

Well, finally reached my pre-diet weight of last spring and decided I couldnt let it go any further. To be fair some of that weight gain is muscle as I have done p90x for a while and i gain muscle like crazy when i lift (my body was meant to be a wrestler I think). So I bought a book called "race weight" and im back at it. I have a week off now so will be sure to be good for that. Then i have a pretty hard month but Im confident that I can handle that and training and dieting with sufficient willpower. Then I have a 1.5 months off for studying for boards and doing interviews for residency. The key there will be staying consistent when traveling which is difficult. I figure even if I can only stay fully motivated as long as I did last time (3-4 months) I can get in top shape and it will still be cold when I am in good shape so I can actually do some damage on the PR front.

hey, thanks for the note. Im game. Im rescheduling the rest of this year to be as easy as possible. Gonna try to drive out there for long runs or even some workouts with you. As of now henry has been injured for 2-3 weeks and he has a girlfriend who visits every weekend which cripples his running. Im now single and therefore single-minded in my pursuits.

From big legs on Sun, Nov 28, 2010 at 20:22:00 from 68.198.227.192

you serious about driving out here! That would be awesome. Maybe we can do some weekend running trip to some mountain range this summer. sorry about mary but i figure that was kind of your own choice. great job with the miles. i know it has not been easy with your schedule.
