My goal was sub 19. My splits were 5:48,6:07,6:50. Last tenth of a mile at a 6:15. Not fast enough. I took the first mile too fast. I should have taken the first easy then the second and 3rd harder.

Good racing today Ashton. Yes, you probably took it out a little too fast but you still shouldn't have dropped all the way down to 6:50 for the last mile.
Some slowdown is normal in the last mile. The key is to remain positive and mentally into the race in the last mile. It's a learning process and you are making HUGE steps in the right direction just by being out there battling.

Thanks. Any mental tricks how not to kill it the first mile?

In cross country, you have an automatic reason to stay "engaged and fighting" in the last mile - your teammates are depending on you to pass as many runners as possible and don't get passed by anyone!
In individual races, its good to have some levels of goals (like times) that will keep you motivated to keep pushing.
Like Rob said, just getting out there and getting some races under your belt over the summer will pay off.
