Short-Term Running Goals: Run enough to hold off the middle-age spread
Long-Term Running Goals:
Sub 3 hour marathon--SOMEDAY! Done!
New long term goal: ....run enough to feel kinda like I did when I was fit
Personal: I was a single mom. Two times over. We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions. Then, I met a man I didn't deserve. And he loves me so much. And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer. Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now. But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway. This is my failure blog now. Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded. Favorite Blogs: |

| | Horrible run today. The plan was 1 mile warm-up, 6.2 mile tempo, and 1 mile cool down. Well the new year had a nasty surprise for me. I felt good during the warm-up, and kicked into the tempo feeling strong. It started out GREAT. I was cooking along at well under 8:00 pace and feeling pretty comfortable doing out--got about 3 miles and some change into it and then BAM my right ankle blew up. No warning. I felt that familiar tug on the outside, and my gait immediately turned into a limp-run. The tempo run came to a screeching halt. Jogging very slowly and limpy, I went a few more miles in denial to see if it would settle down. I know what it is, because I experienced this with my left ankle several months ago. Pereoneal tendonitis appears again. The good news is that it is not as severe, I don't think. I am still able to walk without limping--a plus. I came home, did my ankle stretches, popped 800 of motrin, and plunged my ankles into a fifteen minute ice bath. I am 16 days away from my half and I have already paid the money. So maybe there is a little denial going on here, but I think I can nip this thing in the bud in a few days if I am aggressive with treating it. I am not looking forward to the elliptical machine but I foresee its use for a few days at least. Update: Ok I have calmed down now. I have been walking around at work so far with no limp and no problems. Ankle seems fine. My ankles seem very sensitive to even the slightest bank in the road--I have been running on the right shoulder a lot to make my left ankle feel better but now my right ankle is mad. Sooo..I think I will be able to run tomorrow but it will have to be either the treadmill or a track. Time to start looking for some bike trails and maybe limited running on sidewalks as too much concrete could cause other problems. Anyhow HAPPY NEW YEAR! Oh yeah I measured the distance I had gotten in the tempo with my time and it puts me at 7:34 pace for 3.17 miles before I was so rudely interrupted--that's a good pace for me so I am happy about that! |

| | 6.3 on the treadmill in the laundry room at my mom's apartment complex. The treadmill faces out a window about 10 feet from a wall. So I ran and stared at the wall. No tv and no music. Yuck. I will have to borrow my son's zune tomorrow. Tried to run overground a little bit and my ankle said NO. I guess I am lucky that I can at least run on the treadmill. I am so much slower on the treadmill! I started out at 10:00 and eventually accelerated into 9:13 pace which was taking a lot of effort. Overground those paces are a piece of cake for me but on the treadmill they are killer. What's up with that??? Anyways I am trying not to panic. I keep telling myself I will be able to run overground soon. 15 days until the half. Ugh. I better get to icing. |
| |
| | 6.4 miserable, and I do mean miserable, miles on the treadmill in the laundry room at my mom's apartment. I borrowed my son's zune and this was my first experience running with music, but it didn't seem to help much. I have a new respect for treadmill runners. The unrelenting, monotonous pace...ugh. I ran at 9:22 pace which overground is a piece of cake for me but on the treadmill was quite brutal..I don't know why this is? I suspect the heat and humidity in the laundry room contributed somewhat to my distress--I have become quite accustomed to cold air and wind--perhaps running in the exact opposite is a shock to my system. I tried to jog a few steps overground but it is still a no go for my ankle. I have decided if there is no improvement by Monday I will bypass the treadmill and either do a stationary bicycle or an elliptical for as long as I can stand it in place of a long run. 14 days until the half. Oh please little ankle get over yourself and let me run my race I have worked so hard for..... |

one hour and 52 minutes on the elliptical early in the a.m. I can't even walk without limping. Looks like I will be shelving the half. How disappointing. All this work. That STINKS. Doing the ice bath thing now hoping for a miracle.
Ok, the good stuff. Went out with another couple for my husband's birthday last night with NO KIDS and had a good time. Got Jesse's 14th birthday on Saturday. All these birthdays after Christmas!
Gotta go to work today. If my patient's aren't limping worse than me then they will walk to the truck and climb in themselves. I'm not carrying attention-seeking whiney brats today. |

I broke down and paid for one month to use the local rec center. I spent one hour on the recumbent bike watching television and then tried out the virtual reality bike and it was COOL! I am going straight for that virtual reality bike tomorrow. My ankle is swollen and I can hardly stand to walk so no elliptical today. I have been thinking about what Sasha said and the timing is actually perfect. One year of nursing school=one year of base building. Then I am out of school, a bit more injury resistant, and ready to train for some bigger races! This blog is great--it will help keep me faithful! Not sure how work is going to go today. Fortunately, I will only have to walk in short spurts for most of it--from the truck into a house, back out, from the truck to the hospital, and then back out, from the truck into the post. Of course, this would be the day that somebody crashes something in the middle of nowhere and we go hiking...I hope not...I will look ridiculous trying to speed-limp. |
| |
| | 30 minutes on the virtual bike and 30 minutes on the elliptical. Ankle swelling is down but still hurts like mad when I walk. Still limping--it was a little embarassing at work because people kept asking why I was walking funny. Took some motrin--hope it helps today. The weather is going to be nice later this week--too bad I can't get out in it and run. Maybe next week I'll be able to stand a mile or two. We'll see! I am looking forward to comfortable morning jogs to start my day! |
| |
| | Spent just over 60 minutes on the evilliptical. The weather outside is gorgeous, I can't believe this is January in Kansas. I iced the ankle really good this morning, and was able to get one icing session in last night at work. It's not feeling any better, but not any worse either, and the swelling is gone. One more shift tonight and then I am on vacation for 10 days! Yay! Nursing school starts Tuesday. wow. The new year is here, let the craziness begin. I have known that this was going to be a tough year with school, but it sure came fast! I bet the year flies by though. |
|
| |
one hour on the evilliptical bright and early this morning. I am hoping to do my husband's boot camp workout video later this afternoon and maybe a little strength training at the rec center. Stronger legs will help my joints take the pounding better, right? I'm still super limpy but have improvement when I take motrin--at first motrin wasn't even helping but now it is so I guess that is progress...I'm on vacation now! Ok, staycation. First day of nursing school is Tuesday. p.m. 30 minutes on the virtual bike, then 2 sets of 10 each on quads and hamstrings(light weights) Jesse turns 14 tomorrow so I better get moving on party preparations!
|
| |
| |
60 minutes pretty easy on the evilliptical. I watched the first episode of the new Real World on television while I did it. I am way too old to be entertained by that show but something about reality television is amusing. I am off to clean house and prepare a meal for Jesse's birthday party.
|
| |
| | I had a pleasant morning followed by a nice church service, followed by some quiet time. Ankle is markedly better today! I can walk with only a slight limp. Finally! It was nice enough to take Vanessa outside today and she was fascinated by the chickens and the riding lawnmower. I'll do a "long run" on the elliptical tomorrow morning. Once this limp is gone I can walk on the treadmill--hopefully sometime this week. Did a little 10 minute core workout video. |
|
| | Two hours on the elliptical to pay for my weekend sins, which were many, including birthday cake(several times over) and ice cream with my husband last night. Ankle is better but not ready for running yet. Nursing school starts tomorrow. I don't have work today! |
| |
| | 45 minutes on the elliptical, 21 minutes on the virtual bike. I kept my heart rate between 165-170 for most of the elliptical session, and about 150 on the bike. It is really hard to get my heart rate up on the bicycle. The 5 am crowd is the biggest one at the rec center, apparently. I am usually in there alone so it was a shocker to see other people in there. Anyways, off to a lovely 1.5 hour drive to Hutchinson to start nursing school! |
| |
| | 55 minutes on the elliptical with the 5 am crowd again. I kept it easy--heart rate hovering around 140. Then I tried walking on the treadmill. Denied. Still limpy, but not much pain. Off to another day of nursing school--today we are doing skills checkoffs so it should be pretty easy since most of this is stuff we have done before--iv's blah blah blah. I am not as overwhelmed as I thought I would be. |
| |
| | 60 minutes medium effort on the elliptical. A couple of inches of snow dropped last night and it was frigid--it put quite a damper on the 5am crowd. I was there by myself most of the time. I am able to walk without limping today! In the pm I went to Genesis with my mother and did strength training, then walked a few laps around the indoor track. I think I will do some walking on the treadmill tomorrow. |
|
| | It's not much, but I'm counting it! 55 minutes on the elliptical trying to keep my heart rate close to 170; then hopped onto the treadmill and walked briskly for .75 mile with no pain and no limp, so got brave and finished the mile jogging--no pain. Yeah! Finally, a breakthrough. I will probably try to jog a bit further on the treadmill tomorrow. |
| |
| | 50 minutes on the elliptical. Then I hopped on the treadmill and did 1.25, mostly at 10:00 pace. No pain, felt good! Good luck to all you folks out there racing today! |
| |
| | Day of atonement for weekend sins, although I was not too terribly bad this weekend. One hour on the elliptical, 3 miles on the treadmill, mile 1 6mph, mile 2 6.5 mph, mile 3 6.6mph with 7 mph for the last quarter mile. No pain, felt good. Topped it off with 4 miles on the virtual bike. Ankle is doing fantastic but I'm going to keep up the crosstraining and ease back into the running as slowly as I can stand it. Staycation is over and I am back to work today. |
| |
| | 30 minutes on the recumbent bicyle, then 30 minutes on the treadmill. Ankle still feels good. I think I will try some overground running later this week. |
| |
| | It's going to be a looong day. I have to drive an hour and a half to Hutchinson for class, then drive straight from there to Wichita to work, and won't be off until midnight. I joined the 5 am crowd this morning for 25 minutes on the elliptical and 35 minutes on the treadmill. I ran mostly at 6.6mph, then scooted it up to 7mph for a minute, then finished off with a fun minute at 8mph, then figured I better stop and call it good. Ankle still feels good, but I am still nervous about it flaring up again. |
| |
| |
I'm sick. My gut hurts so bad. Can't eat. My daughter is sick too. She was up all night with breathing problems and vomited yesterday. No workout today.
|
| |
| | After being violently ill yesterday I was surprised to feel pretty good this morning after a good night's sleep. Must have just been a 24 hour bug. I ran 6 miles overground today, nice and slow, in 1 mile loops by my house. 3 loops in one direction and reversed for the other 3 loops to keep the wear and tear even on my ankles. It felt really good. Between loops I would run through the house and do a head count and check the kids, which they found quite entertaining! "Mom! Why are you RUNNING in the HOUSE?!" I would come through the back door, dash down the hallway, through the kitchen and living room to ensure all was well, and back down the hallway and out the door. Vanessa is better. I had to give her one breathing treatment last night but she has no troubles this morning and is back to her active and mischievous self. It is a sad day today--my husband David's late wife's grandmother died yesterday. I did not know her well but Grandma Kathy is devastated and David is sad too. The kids did not know her incredibly well either but I suspect the older boys in particular will have some troubles since they have already experienced a lot of loss in their lives(their biological mother about 6 years ago). So, keep us in your prayers. |
| |
| | Same routine as yesterday, reversing directions on loops and dashing through the house between loops to check on the kids. It was downright frigid today but no snow or ice so I can't complain. It was a nice slow run and I had to field a few phone calls as part of the funeral planning frenzy-- I can talk on a cell phone and run at the same time! I'm sure that looks ridiculous if anyone saw it... |
| |
| | Atonement Monday. 6.74 on the treadmill at 6.6mph for 6 miles, then I couldn't help myself and sped up bit by bit to 8.5mph before making myself stop. Then I rode the virtual bike for 30 minutes. Lots of careful stretching and now I am having my morning coffee. Saw a number on the scale today that I can hardly believe--especially considering the type and amounts of food I ate this weekend. |
| |
| |
6 loops, reversing directions, in the wintery wonderland. It was actually quite beautiful. Everything is covered by a thin layer of ice and looks crystalline. It is 14 degrees. Brrrr
|
| |
| | It was absolutely gorgeous outside. Just as cold as yesterday but no wind so it felt a low warmer. The sun was out, the sky was blue, the snow was white--it was beautiful. I ran on the dirt roads and the traction was mostly decent. I wanted to run a few more miles or so because I was enjoying the run so much but controlled myself and told myself if everything felt good still I could start running further next week. Did some strengthening exercises afterwards--pushups, triceps dips, squats, lunges, calf raises. Yesterday I did 15 minutes of core work. I am going to start incorporating more of these exercises after my runs. Later on when I am sure I am completely healed and not dancing with any injuries I want to start doing more explosive type drills and jumps at the ends of my runs. I was reading about this type of training in running times yesterday and it sounds like it could really increase running power and help with injury resistance. |
| |
| | 6.2 nice and easy today. I enjoyed the run and needed the release. Got into it with a co-worker on another unit last night and it was pretty ugly. I am trying to stop being angry but the guy was so outrageously disrespectful that I told him it was unacceptable and don't talk to me like that again and the whole conversation just went downhill from there. I haven't gottten into it like that with someone at a work for years. Anyways the run felt really good and helped calm me. My glutes, quads, and a hamstrings are all a little sore from the exercises yesterday! |
| |
| |
5.4 at a very gentle pace. Then I just felt like running faster so .46 in 2:58--6:26 pace(I measured the distance with mapmyrun so I don't know how accurate it is). Felt good. Jogged back and stopped myself from doing more because after that I felt rejuvenated and my muscles felt fresh and bouncy and I was just ready to go. I know, I know, fresh off of injury I shouldn't be pulling stunts like that. Just a few minutes is okay though, right? Did my strength drills afterward and will probably do abs later today. I can't wait to up the mileage a tad bit next week if I'm feeling good and want to run further!
pm--did 15 minutes of core workout |
| |
| | Beautiful day. Run felt GREAT. It is sunny today and actually warm enough to wear short sleeves. It is supposed to get up to 66 degrees although right now it is 30-something. I foresee a jaunt later this afternoon with Vanessa in her jogging stroller! |
| |
| | I went roller skating yesterday at my nephew's 7th birthday party and it was fun! It has been many years since I rollerskated. I took all the little boys for loops around the rink. My boys are skinny light little things and when they started to stumble and fall it was easy to grab ahold of them and put them on their feet and they would just barrel forward! My nephew is just a tall and big-boned kid and when I went to scoop him up when he stumbled he was a bit heavier than I expected and we both almost bit the dust! Anyways holding on to him and keeping him balanced was hard work. I of course skated some loops on my own and played red light-green light and squatted in my skates while my 1 year old grabbed my hands and pulled me so I rolled along(she thought that was great). This morning I am sore from all of it but at least I don't feel bad about that birthday cake I ate...Off to church this morning and then home to NOT watch the superbowl. Neither me nor my husband care for football--I might tune in to catch some funny commercials and the halftime show though. |
| |
| | I put in a good long workout today because this weekend, well, really this whole week, I have been awful with my eating! I warmed up 20 minutes on the elliptical, then 7.68 on the treadmill at 6.6mph(9:05 pace), and then 20:30 on the virtual bike. It felt really good and I am ready to start this week right! |
| |
| | Nice and easy run on the dirt and gravel roads. It is cold again--supposedly 22 degrees but there was a pretty stout wind and it made me feel much colder. I was right on the border of underdressed but one more layer probably would have been too hot. Did my strength drills afterward. I am still running pain-free. Had my whole wheat pancakes made with skim milk and olive oil for breakfast with peanut butter and sugar free syrup. The kids and my husband really like them too so we have been making them 3 or 4 times a week for breakfast here recently! I like them because they last for 3 or 4 hours before I am hungry again. |
| |
| | It was a bad dog day again. I got almost two miles through my nice, easy run when this HUGE dog came running at me. He had this massive thick rope around his neck that was broken so I knew he was supposed to be tied up. I run this route all the time without troubles so this dog surprised me. Anyways he did not bite me but he kept jumping up on me and nipping and would not leave me alone. He was so big when he reared up his paw was on my shoulder and he was taller than me. He was some sort of massive mutt with a head like a bear. He wasn't biting but he wasn't friendly either and I was getting scared so I broke a branch off a tree and started swinging. He didn't like that so then he stayed out of reach of my branch but kept hovering. I walked about a third of a mile swinging my branch before I shook him. Anyways the rest of the run was uneventful and tomorrow I am running the same route with mace and teaching that dog a lesson if he pops up again. Did 15 minutes of core work afterward. |
| |
| | I'm working on varying surfaces and watching road camber so I drove to the highschool track today and did 28 laps--reversed directions halfway through. It was boring--even more boring than I anticipated. I kept speeding up wanting to get it over with and I was really wrestling with myself to stay at recovery pace. I finally made the bargain with myself that if I ran at 9:30 pace the whole time I could run one quarter as fast as I felt like toward the end. It worked and I stayed at 9:30 pace except for an 89 second quarter on the 25th lap. Felt wonderful. Did my strength drills interspersed with striders afterward, stretched, drove home, and at a massive breakfast--2 eggs, two pieces of toast and margarine, half a piece of toast with peanut butter(my daughter commandeered the other half), and a cup of skim milk. |
| |
| |
7 one mile loops by my house, dashing through to check my children between loops. I ran at a comfortable pace but probably a little faster than a recovery room---mostly because of an eagerness to check on my children, in particular my toddler. Big brother Nick has strict instructions to keep her in sight at all times but at just getting ready to turn 9(in 2 weeks) he can become distracted. The loops are still nice though since I can see my street and anything that moves on it throughout the whole loop so I would know if a strange car was headed toward my house and take a shortcut to get home. Anyways, 9:30 between checkups is just a tad too long so I ran faster--not sure how much faster--but I covered 7 miles in an hour. My muscles are a little sore from the strength exercises yesterday--but no real pain anywhere so that is good! I found out more about my 10k next weekend. Surprise, it is actually a trail race. I have never run in that kind of race before, but I am actually really excited. I am going to run for fun and take care not to twist my ankles--rather than go for any kind of time! There are no prizes but you get a picture of yourself running and cookies at the end!
p.m. 15 minute core workout
|
| |
| |
Nick wanted to go play on the football field today, so we packed up and went. We brought baby dolls, water bottles, a sippy cup, fruit, fruit bars, books, and a stroller and drove to the track. I ran 28 laps...eventually. Between letting Vanessa in and out of the stroller for laps, craning my neck to watch the boys, doing a few dashes up the bleachers when Vanessa was climbing too high, yelling at the kids to be nice to each other, and doling out snacks, it took me a while! It was not as boring as my 28 laps the other day, as I was quite engaged most of the time! At the end I did a 100 meter dash in 17 seconds, timed Nick for a 100 meter dash(21.7 seconds) and did some stretching. Ian didn't want to do a 100 meter dash, and Vanessa would veer off course to explore before she ever made it 100 meters. All in all quite entertaining. It was 60 degrees by 10:00 today(how do ya like that Walter?).
p.m. my husband's basic training workout video. mostly a lot of pushups and crunches
|
| |
| | Didn't renew my membership at the rec center--didn't want to pay the money--so running is the option for my atonement day workout. I figured as long as I ran really slow it wouldn't hurt to run extra mileage. 5am--It is dark and windy, and I keep catching little drizzles. I figure I can handle it. By mile 4, the wind is picking up, and the drizzles are heavier. By mile 5, it is howling like a freight train and I start heading home. Too late. The storm blows in and I am caught in torrents of rain. I can't see with the rain on my glasses, so I take them off. Now I can't see cuz I'm blind. All I can hear is freight train wind. There aren't many streetlights in these parts so I am deaf and blind. I use my trusty penlight to try and stay on the road and shuffle home, although I think I may have ran in some yards. The penlight saves me from several mailbox collisions. I come home soaked. My husband is waiting with a towel--he heard the torrential rain and started coffee and got a towel, figuring I'd be in shortly! distance: 6.6 miles 7am--giant breakfast. 2 eggs, 2 pieces of sausage, 2 pancakes, skim milk 8am--full and lazy, but I'm gonna finish this. Back out for 4 super slow miles. It's windy(but dry), I'm still full, and have no motivation. I wouldn't even call it running--more like shuffling. I make it home, do my strength drills. Done.
|
| |
| |
7.4 nice and easy. Did abs afterword. Very pleaseant run.
|
| |
| | I was lazy today--slept in and did not want to run. I even false started. I jogged up the driveway, noted the mud, then turned around and jogged back into the house. Finally, I decided I needed to buy some surprise Valentines for my husband and kids so I drove into town, ran in town, then went to the store and went Valentine shopping. The run was okay--I was a lot more into it after a few miles--took it nice and slow, though. |
| |
| | Once again, wasn't feeling the run today--but I did it anyway, pretty bright and early and half-awake. I woke up, dressed, and stumbled out the door. About halfway through I woke up and it was an okay run. I ran pretty slow, but the pace naturally picked itself up and I was running at a pretty moderate pace towards the last mile or two--enough for my breathing to pick up a bit. Went home and did the strength drills I neglected yesterday. Now I'm off to coffee, breakfast, and family time. |
| |
| | Very nice run today--I wasn't dragging my feet. 7 miles--loops by my house while Vanessa napped. Felt good--took it very easy except for the natural pick-up in pace in the last mile. I'll probably only run a few miles tomorrow since I have a 10k on Sunday. |
| |
| | 3 miles on a full stomach after breakfast at nothing more than a shuffle. Met up with my one year old for the last quarter mile and sprinted at about 30:00 pace with her:) My legs should be nice and fresh tomorrow. I hear this course for the 10k tomorrow has a lot of sand and mud or ice, depending on the weather, and any semblance of speed is impossible. Sounds fun! I can't wait to finish and get my cookies! |
| |
| Race: |
Not for Wimps (6.2 Miles) 00:49:43, Place overall: 6 | | This was the hardest, yet the funnest race I have ever been in! I was the 6th person overall to finish and I believe the 2nd female. The race starts on asphalt, then after a mile you fall off the road(literally, it's almost vertical going down for a minute) and hit a sandbar. Sand is the hugest speedkiller ever! You plod through this sandbar which kills your legs, then you hit the trails. The trails alternate between soft, deep sand, and firmer footing. I quickly realized that rather than try to keep a pace(impossible), I would just try to keep the same effort. The trail twisted and turned, and shot up and down so fast it almost gave me a headache. On the sandy areas I would just try to keep the same effort, and then would charge when I had better traction. There where a few thick grassy areas which would kill speed, but nothing like the sand did! Anyways I actually had a lot of fun. I passed a lot of people in the third mile and then after that was on my own. There was a girl way ahead of me that I would catch glimpses of now and then but I had no hope of catching her. Anyways, for the last mile you get dumped back out on blessed asphalt, but, unfortunately, have to run uphill for the entire last mile. I tried to charge the hill as best I could although my legs were beat up from the sand. Anyways at the end there were 3 guys milling around that had finished and I didn't see the girl I was chasing so I was either 2nd or 3rd female--cool! I got a dreadfully unattractive picture of myself running(I swear the camera added 30 pounds) and a fudge brownie for my efforts. I will definitely be back for this run next year! |
| |
| | Day off today--my hamstrings are a little sore! If only I could always eat Valentine candy and baked goods and lose a pound.... |
|
| | Nice and easy today. It is really windy--not unusual, but irritated me today. I like to run and be able to hear something besides the wind roaring in my ears. No encounters with dogs today--thank goodness! I have a bit of lingering soreness today in my legs and decided to wait another day before getting back into the strength drills--I think I will do some abs though in a little bit. |
| |
| | I wanted to run today--had some frustrations to work out. I took it nice and slow and felt great. My muscles aren't sore today anymore. I finished my 7 and wasn't done yet so I ran some more--raced the school bus a little bit in the next door housing addition as it picked up kids--kinda fun! Did 2 circuits of strength drills today instead of just one. They are a bit harder the second time around but I think they make a difference so I will keep doing them! |
| |
| | I needed to go to town and run a few errands anyway, so I drove to the track and ran 28 boring laps and then ran errands. I don't particularly care for going round and round but my joints seem to like the surface okay and there is little camber to deal with so oh well! The only bad part is it is so monotonous that it is easy to lose track of what lap you are on...so I think I ran 28 laps, give or take a few! |
| |
| | Got home from work at 1230 and got up to run at 5, which was just as well since I wasn't sleeping well anyway. It was just a slow, pleasant, dark run today. I ran with my penlight. I was surprised at how many cars I saw on the road this early in the morning. Anyways, I am glad the weekend is here--today is Nick's 9th birthday celebration so I have presents to wrap and pizzas to make. |
| |
| | 7.25 in town today while Grandma watched the kids. No more lingering soreness from the strength drills today, but I decided against doing them today. I like to do them 2x week but since I had a race this week I will count that as one day of strength drills. The run felt good--I think it was a bit faster than usual but it was cold and I forgot to wear gloves so my hands were frozen and I wanted to get done! The 40-45 mpw training range seems to be a good one for me--I think I will hang out at this mileage for a while and not build up any more until I am sure my body has adapted and two circuits of strength drills 2 or 3 times a week doesn't make me so sore. |
| |
| | Day of rest--and it's gonna' be a fun day. It'll go something like this: church, lunch, naptime, a few chores, then Delight is picking me up for girls' dinner out with Deb and Brandy--sounds like a fun day to me! |
|
| | Had a very pleasant, lazy run today and then did 2 circuits of strength drills. My right quad is really tight--it doesn't hurt at all unless I try to stretch it too much--that's when I realized how tight it was. Lots of gentle stretching afterward today and it helped a lot. |
|
| | The emphasis was on slow for the run today. My right quad is much better, but I can tell it is time for new shoes. My legs have little nagging aches and pains. My shoes should be in the mail any day now. Tomorrow will probaby be running circles on the track. |
| |
| | 7 miles easy on the track in new shoes. Felt good. The shoes are a huge improvement. Decided to run 400 at a fast but relaxed and comfortable pace. It felt so good and I didn't feel strained at all that I made it an 800 in 3:16. Took about 600 meters of jogging to fully recover. Beautiful day! |
| |
| |
It was really humid and overcast outside today and 55 degrees, but not unpleasant. I shuffled slowly for the whole run--trying to be careful to break in the new shoes and make sure everything is still okay after my quickish half mile yesterday(I am paranoid about injury these days). Did 2 circuits of strength drills. I have decided against the 5k in March and am saving my energy for the big 10K in April--it has cash prizes to the top 5 and draws a lot of elite runners from the midwest. I won't be winning any cash(I can't run a 10k under 40 minutes!)--but it will be a good race to get a nice PR in and there are some awesome post-race activities including a concert and bbq. There's a 2 miles race too with a cash prize to the winner($200) but these ladies are unbelievable--they can run 2 miles in 10:something. That's insane! I can't even all out sprint that fast!
|
|
| |
| | Had to get up at 5am to squeeze the run in today. Boy did it get a lot colder overnight. I was wearing two layers on top and bottom and was still chilly. The run started out pretty sluggish(less than 5 hours of sleep, yuck)--but I warmed up more and more with each mile and was bounding along happily at mile 7 and then tore through mile 8--eager to get home and get a hot cup of coffee(which is very nice right now). I cannot believe how with just a few days in a new pair of shoes and nearly all my niggling aches and pains have disappeared. I will have to be much more astute about replacing my shoes between 400 and 500 miles. I'm going to take a nap today later on! |
|
|
| | If I was gonna run today, it was going to be early! Good thing I went to bed at 9 and fell right sleep because my alarm at 3AM was EARLY! Did 7 loops by the house at a pretty rapid pace just because it is creepy that early in the morning, then came home, kissed my husband good-bye as he headed off to work, and now I am blogging and eating a granola bar. I'm going back to bed in a few minutes! |
|
| |
| | Started out at my usual shuffle but had picked it up towards the end. Feel good--nothing hurts! Did only one circuit of strength drills since my husband had breakfast ready. This is a tough week between work and nursing school clinical shifts. I have no free time and my kids will not see much of me. It stinks. My runs will be early in the a.m. Next week will be better. Sigh. |
|
|
| | 8 easy loops early in the am. A very pleasant run before a very long day. Now I am off to a 9 hour PHTLS re-certification class follwed by 6.5 hours of work before I can come home around midnight. Yuck. At least tomorrow I get to sleep in. |
|
| |
| | Beautiful day, sunny, 45 degrees, a bit of stiff headwind coming from the south, though. Went to the track and ran 28 laps. Nick came with me and ran 400, then did a 100 meter dash in 20 seconds, then combed the bleachers and found 13 cents. He was pretty excited. I warmed up for 5.5 miles easy, then did and 800 in 3:18(slower than last week, dang headwind), recovered, then did 100 in 14.5(that can't be right, unless the tailwind worked miracles; maybe I looked at the wrong marking on the track?), jogged the rest of that lap, then finished with a 200 in 34.1(okay that tailwind indeed helps!). Legs feel great. I am off to another day of work, but at least I got over 7 hours of sleep today. Went home afterward and stuffed myself to the gills with pancakes and peanut butter with my family! |
|
|
| | 7.12 very easy--legs are tired. Did two sets of strength drills. The weather is unbelievable--it may get up to 80 degrees! I wore a running skirt and short sleeves and got hot! That has not happened in a long time. I was even SWEATING--something else I have done very little of this winter. |
|
| |
| | Got up to run at 5am but Vanessa had a bad dream and was crying, so I rocked her back to sleep and then went back to bed. Later this afternoon I did 8 loops while Vanessa was napping in 1:06:30--8:19 pace. I found this surprising since I felt sluggish and was not pushing the pace at all. This is the first time I have timed a run in a long time. It was 70+ degrees and muggy and I can tell I am not used to the heat. I think 50 degrees is my ideal running temperature. Anyways, off to enjoy my family today before my first nursing school clinicals tomorrow and Sunday. I will have to run at 4am tomorrow or not at all, but if it is thunderstorming as the weatherman predicts the run will not happen--I will have to go on Sunday--I'm not running in a Kansas thunderstorm. |
|
| |
| | No thunderstorm, so 7 loops today at 4am. Now I am off to my first clinical and boy am I nervous! |
|
| |
| | Sunday, no run--but I have another 12 hour clinical today. Almost over. Yesterday wasn't too bad, but it was long and time dragged. I expect the same today. I madr 45 miles this week with no injury! |
|
| | 8.32 easy. It was a tired start--I shuffled for the first few miles, worn out from my long work and clinical week. It took me until about the fourth mile to reach full cruising speed. I felt pretty chipper and good toward the end though, and ran the last 1/2 mile at what I feel would perhaps be my 10k race pace. Time for the run was 1:12:27--8:42 pace. Did two circuits of strength drills afterward. I am so relieved that last week is over with! I made it through my first two shifts of clinicals. Yesterday the floor census was low so I got put in ICU for my shift and it was awesome! My precepting nurse was incredibly smart and organized, and one of our patients was was very critical and required a lot of care. I felt mentally engaged throughout the shift. I wish I could do all my clinicals in ICU. |
|
|
| | 8.32 miles easy. Felt sluggish today and never really got up to full cruising speed. average 8:51 pace. It's cold again--I had to get out the hat, gloves, and double layers. Nick is making pancakes for breakfast and I can't wait to stuff myself! |
|
| |
| | It was COLD today. 18 degrees; not sure what it was with the wind chill factor. Drove to the track, warmed up jogging to rosewood and back, then did 16 laps on the track. Felt the need for speed so ran the first 8 easy, one mile in a fast but controlled pace that I felt was sustainable in 6:44, then 4 more laps easy and done. Now I am sitting and smelling the aroma of the massive breakfast that my husband and son are preparing and can't wait to eat! |
|
| |
| | 8.2 easy in 1:09:56--8:32 pace. Kept the pace comfortable until the very end--then did approximately 10K race pace for 1/4mile, then accelerating into 5k race pace for the last quarter mile or so at the very end(training for a long, strong kick). Just stuffed myself with peanut butter pancakes(we believe in breakfast around here!) |
|
|
| | 8 loops while Vanessa napped. Started off slow--felt heavy. Had to stop several times in the first two miles to stretch out a stitch underneath my left ribs. Felt heavy and jerky until mile 4 when suddenly I felt great and cruised along happily for the rest of my run. Time was 1:04:05--8:01 pace(I am surprised at this--I really was running comfortably--no straining, not pushing the pace). Did two circuits of strength drills and stretched. I feel like my fitness level has taken a sudden leap in the last few weeks. I am glad I took Sasha's advice--base mileage for a good long time is the way to go for me--my fitness is improving and I am not injured.
|
|
|
| | 8 miles in 1:06:12--8:17 pace. Felt like I was really taking it easy because my giant lunch from Red Robin was sitting in my stomach like a brick--oh well, Vanessa was napping so run now or don't run at all! Lunch was so good....chicken burger with cheese, guacamole, mayo, bacon, and pickles, along with giant baked steak fries dipped in ranch....yum! I didn't eat the bun though--I have really lost my taste for white bread. Ran my highest weekly mileage ever this week--still feeling good--no aches or pains or ominous signs of injury. I will probably mimic this week for the rest of the month as far as mileage--maybe go over 50 a week for the first time in April. |
|
| |
| | What a great morning! I even beat all the kids out of bed and had a little alone time with coffee! I like Sundays like this. Anyways I'll enjoy my day, because amother hell week starts tomorrow--I have all my work days plus two days of clinicals. Yuck.
|
| |
| | 8.32 in 1:08:52--8:16 pace. It was early and a little foggy, but about 50 degrees and very pleasant outside. Came home and did 2 circuits of strength drills before eating my usual massive 900 calorie breakfast(2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, coffee, 3 pieces french toast with butter and sugar-free syrup). I find that I am not usually terribly hungry the rest of the day if I eat a good breakfast. Off to work this afternoon and tomorrow I have the second session of PHTLS at 8:30 tomorrow so I will have to get up early and run loops and then work until midnight or one after PHTLS. Yuck yuck yuck. I'll be able to sleep in and hang out with the kids Wednesday morning though--they are on spring break! |
|
|
| | 8 loops early in the am in 1:09:45/8:44 pace. Really tired today. |
|
|
| | 8.15 in 1:06:29/8:09 pace. Started out very slow and shuffling--enjoying the 55 degree balmy weather and the sun. I felt pretty slow but must have picked up speed as I warmed up. Came home, stretched a little, and now I'm going to read books to my daughter. I'm still really tired from yesterday. I wish I didn't have to go to work this afternoon. |
|
| |
| | Drove to the track, ran 8 laps, and then ran through town up to rosewood, turned around ran back. ran 800, then 800 comfortably hard at 3:19, recovered 800, then 400 not-so-comfortably hard in 89.5, second, then another 400, then stretched and drove home--stopped at the grocery store on the way. Now I am getting ready to eat my usual monstrous breakfast. |
|
|
| | 8.47 in 1:11:18/8:25 pace. Started out really slow and tired--could barely get one foot in front of the other. Felt better later in the run. Did two circuits of strength drills and a little stretching afterward. I will be up at 4am tomorrow to squeeze in a run before a long day at Galichia Heart Hospital for clinicals. |
|
|
| | 8 loops at 4am in 1:08--8:30 pace. Tired today. I got NO sleep last night. Vanessa was congested and couldn't sleep so she was fussy all night and we spent a lot of time rocking, Now it is off to clinicals. |
|
|
| | Me and Vanessa are sick. It started on Friday and just got worse and last night I went to bed at 830 and this morning I feel awful. Called in to work. No run today. Time to rest. |
| |
| | I am feeling better today--but not 100%. I decided to try and get my run in, even if it was very slow--which it was--8.32 in 1:17:01/9:15 pace. Much slower than usual, but plenty fast enough for my tired body. I had to stop and walk once when two dogs came at me. I got my mace ready and walked backwards slowly but thankfully they stayed on their side of the road. I run this route often and have not encountered these dogs before. I hope I don't see them again. It was windy, but not as windy as yesterday. Yesterday 60-70mph gusts were knocking over semi's and damaging houses. Even if I had felt fine I would have been hesitant about running outdoors yesterday. Our house creaked and howled all day in the wind. Now I am off to rest a little before work. |
|
|
| | I don't think this is a cold. It's gotta' be the flu. Last night at work I spiked a fever again and could not stop shivering. I went and sat in the ambulance and blasted the heaters and still could not stop shivering. My muscles are tight and hurt from it. I took motrin but it was an hour before it kicked in. I am soooo fatigued this morning, but decided to try for a run. I shuffled very slowly along, but my muscles are achy and it was hard to get one foot in front of the other. My mom called about 5.6 miles into the run so I stopped to walk and talked to her. I walked the rest of the way and talked to mom, and when I circled back to the house just came in and quit. I will just have to play the rest of this week by ear, and not go for any mileage goals--I need to rest and get over this nasty bug. |
|
| |
| | Feeling better today. Decided to run a variation of my route staying close to home, so I could walk home quickly if I became to fatigued. This was a variation that also avoids dogs. It's a little longer than I thought when I measured it afterward but oh well. I kept it very slow and easy and felt okay the whole time--not 100% by any means, but no overwhelming fatigue. My nose is completely plugged. 1:18:06/9:09 pace. |
|
| |
| | Figured I better get out and get my run in before this blizzard being predicted hits. It was super cold and windy today--I geared up in fleece, underarmour, and tights. The wind was so stiff it blew the air right out of my lungs at times. 8 loops by the house in 1:10:35/8:49 pace. I am feeling much better today and am starting to get my strength back. I hope I don't get called into work tonight but it is a strong possibility. |
|
| |
| | The blizzard started last night and ended at 1:00 this afternoon. At 1:15 I put Vanessa down for her nap and went for my post-blizzard run. It was slow going--picking my way through ice, snow(lots of it!) and slush--but very invigorating and a great workout! Time was 1:17:36/10:09 pace--I'll take it! |
|
| | Drove into town in hopes to avoid mud and slush but ran into my fair share of snow, slush, and ice anyway. Little bit of a headwind slowed me down some, but all in all felt decent for the run. 8.11 in 1:09:05/8:31 pace. Did two circuits of strength drills afterward. My cold is actually going away finally. |
|
| |
| | Felt good today. 8.54 in 1:10:37/8:16 pace. Picked it up to 10k race pace for the last half mile. Ran on the dirt roads today since they weren't too terribly muddy. I'm sure my joints appreciated it after all that concrete and asphalt yesterday. I saw that there is a brand new Trail Half Marathon in June in my county. I'm thinking about running it for fun--I like trail runs--no pressure for speed but lots of fun and scenery.
|
|
| |
| | Same route as yesterday in 1:10:22/8:14 pace. Had to fight the wind in places but overall a good run. Felt good. Can't wait for my 10k on the 11th. Big PR coming I hope! I'm going to go register for it today. My husband had eggs and toast and jelly ready for me when I was done. |
|
| |
| | Felt a little soreness in the left quad at work last night. It was gone this morning, but I decided to go extra slow today anyway as a precaution. We were under wind advisory with 40mph gusts, that coupled with the drizzling rain that was stinging my face and the fact that I was tired made it easy to go slow. 1:13:29/9:01 pace. Stuffed my guts with french toast for breakfast. Went and signed up for the 10K yesterday! |
|
| |
| | First 4 miles in 34:37/8:39 pace. Then 1 mile at what I felt was a realistic 10K race pace--fast but comfortable and I was not fatigued at all after only one mile of it--7:18, which would calculate to a 45:21 10K, so, if conditions are good I may get my 45 minute 10k next week. I feel more confident about the pace being sustainable. ran 3 more miles for a time of 31:23/7:50 pace average for the last 4. Finally had a breakthrough in my weight today. I have been at a plateau for several months now--it may just be a fluke but we will see. I have not changed my eating habits--they are pretty healthy--I am just seeing if gradually higher mileage eventually would translate into a little weight loss if I was patient and I think it may. I'm not exactly sure what weight I should go for. I am 5'1". I weighed 103 pre-pregnancy, but weighed 98 in high school. I am thinking I will just let my weight decide for itself and not do anything special to lose more. |
|
|
| | 1:14/8:18 pace. Surprised me since I felt like I was crawling in the heat and wind. 70 degrees tdoay and sunny(last week my run was post-blizzard through snow--only in Kansas!--the bipolar weather capital of the world). Anyways I am not used to the heat, and it was windy today, 25mph with 35mph gusts. Guess I better get used to it. Heat and wind will be the story of my running life this summer! I ran a smidgen extra today so I could hit my first 50 mile week! Yahoo! |
|
|
| | 28 degrees and windy. 1:12:24/8:29 pace. two circuits of strength drills afterward. Can't wait for saturday! |
|
| |
| | 1:09:40/8:09 pace. Felt great today. 23 degrees but sunny and no wind. I was cruising quite comfortably and just had a lot of spring in my step. I hope I feel that way on Saturday! I plan on trying to really slow the pace down tomorrow and run real slow--give my legs some recovery. |
|
| |
| | As promised to myself, I exercised restraint today and took it very, very easy. It was hard because it was beautiful, sunny, and breezy, 40 degrees, and I felt great. I kept putting myself in check again and again. 1:13:43/9:03 pace. I think 40 degrees is actually my ideal running temperature. I prefer to be a little cool rather than warm. |
|
| |
| | Still holding the reigns in and taking it very easy. Ran super easy except for 7 short(50-100 meter) bursts of 10K race pace--just trying to get a handle on what the pace feels like. Time was 1:16:21/8:56 pace. Will probably run 4 or 5 super slow tomorrow just to stay loose. Looks like I will be bringing 4 of my kids with me to the race--early morning for us Saturday! Jesse, my 14 year old, will have to keep track of all his little siblings while I run. Knowing my children are unattended in all those crowds of people will just make me run faster so I can be with them! |
|
| |
| | Had two toddlers(Vanessa and Leo), Nick, and Ian all morning. Jesse wasn't much help but that's okay. At naptime I went out for a very, very, very slow 4 miles. Felt phantom pains all over the place the first mile--I was convinced I was badly injured--boy my nerves are jangly! Of course the body-wide phantom pains disappeared by the second mile. Geez I can't believe how nervous I am about this race--ridiculous! I will be waking the kids up early so they can get fed and loaded up in the van tomorrow morning. It is about a 35 minute drive and then I've got to get them all settled in a designated area where I can find them after the race. I will be lucky to get much of a warmup in. Neither Grandma is available to help tomorrow and David will be at work. I'm loading the van now. Stroller-check, water bottles-check, snacks-check, phone for me and phone for Jesse-check, changes of clothes for the little ones-check, blankets-check, some sweats for me-check, diaper bag-check, man if you are going to go ANYWHERE for more than an hour or so with this many kids you have to bring EVERYTHING! |

| Race: |
Wichita Easter Sun Run (6.2 Miles) 00:44:29, Place in age division: 2 | | 44:29 was what the clock said when I crossed the finish line, but I don't know my official time so I may be off a second. Anyways, I'm PUMPED. Slaughtered my PR by almost 5 minutes. Anyways, got the kids up early, drank a cup of coffee and ate a banana, then drank a cup of water, loaded up, and drove to the course. We got there with an hour to spare. There was a playground right by the finish line! I couldn't have asked for a better setup than that! Warmed up with about 10 or 15 minutes of slow jogging and one burst of race pace, then found the starting line and lined up about 5 minutes before we were off. There was a ton of people there. Anyways, I took off at what I thought was about the right pace, trying not to get overexcited. 1K split was 4:15. A little fast. Can't remember my 2k exactly but it was 8 something. Still a little fast. Saw my kids cheering for me when we passed by the playground around the 4k mark. Then we ran through a bunch of people lined up cheering for us and that was actually really awesome and made me run faster. Crossed 5K in 22:13 still feeling pretty good and just kept plugging away. Somewhere between 6k and 7k it started to get harder. I just kept telling myself to relax. Relax. Tempo. Relax. Tempo. That was what I kept repeating over and over in my head. Don't know why! Anyways legs were feeling clompy like my feet were slapping really hard, but around 8k that feeling seemed to pass. I started to push at 8k knowing that I was probably slowing down. Concentrated on form and staying relaxed. Crossed 9k at 40something and knew if I wanted under 45 minutes I better turn it on. I turned it on, dropped into a dead sprint as soon as I could see the finish line, and when I was coming down the home stretch I could see the clock was 44 something so I was grinning like a fool when I crossed the finish line! Not to mention my kids were screaming at me to sprint! I am very happy with this race! I feel like I had some left when I finished so at my next 10k in a month I will not be afraid to push a little harder--I now know that at this pace I will not blow up and die before the finish. Leg tiredness seems to be what slows me down in the end more than my breathing. My breathing felt pretty good and controlled the whole race. I will have to keep plugging away at those strength drills. Anyways everyone have a great Easter! |
|
| |
| | 1:14:56/8:15 pace. Surprisingly, no soreness from Saturday's race today, although I could feel it a bit in my quads yesterday. Weird. Usually I feel it more in my hamstrings. Pace felt super-easy today. Paid for my Easter sins in a little weight(they were fantastic cadbury cream egg, margarita, chips and queso, and cake sins). I will be good all week and it should go away! Had a boiled egg, milk, and a few pieces of my homemade whole grain banana bread. I made it with ground wheatberries, amaranth, rolled oats, brown sugar, and olive oil, so it counts as pretty healthy I think. Not nearly as grainy as I thought it would be. |
|
| |
| | 1:10:50/8:42 pace. Took it easy today. Feeling some little nagging aches and pains--the ones I get when it is time for new shoes. I ordered them yesterday so hopefully they get here within the week. This will be a long week--I have clinicals this weekend. Yuck. |
|
| |
| | 1:20:44/8:53 pace. Took the pace really easy today as suggested by Eric and Camille. No nagging aches and pains like I had yesterday but it is good to be cautious. I also took 800mg of motrin before bed last night as a precaution. Yesterday I was running on asphalt and today I ran on dirt and I think that makes a big difference.. My joints like dirt much better! I am so glad that nothing hurt today and all was well. It was gorgeous running weather--fifty degrees, nice cooling breeze, and sunny. Very enjoyable run! |
|
| |
| |
1:12:31/8:29 pace. I really meant to take it super easy today, but when I was close to the one west mile mark running e getting ready to turn down goldenrod I saw something I have never seen out here on the dirt roads--ANOTHER RUNNER. He was running east and turned before I did. Naturally I picked it up and caught him. He looked very young, maybe 20 and I introduced myself and told him I had never seen another runner out here. He didn't have much to say so I passed him and moved along. About 1/2 mile later he comes huffing and puffing past me, gaps me, and then slows down. I am quickly reeling him in when he disappears down a driveway and I don't see him again. Check out the way he was dressed--keep in mind it is almost 60 degrees and sunny--downright hot for me. He is wearing long basketball shorts, some kind of t-shirt with a long-sleeve flannel shirt over it(unbuttoned and flapping in the breeze) and a stocking cap. I'll be surprised if I ever see him again.
Oh yeah, yesterday I signed for an all women's 5K on the 25th. There are usually well over 1,000 participants and apparently they have an awesome awards ceremony and it is a really neat event. I haven't been in a 5K since my first one ever in October which was 24:50--the first half of my 10K last week was 22:13 so I guest that would be my pr. I'll probably shoot for a 21:30? I dunno I'm thinking maybe I will experiment a little bit--try going out at a suicidal pace and see what happens? Or start conservative and then take off?
|
|
|
| | 1:18:03/8:36 pace. I really thought I was holding the reigns in and was running really easy. Got my new shoes this morning and I could tell the difference immediately in my run. Old ones only have 333 miles on them and they are not so hot. I either need to find higher quality shoes and pay a little more if they last longer, or I need to find cheaper ones that work if I am going to replace them every two months. These shoes are sooo comfortable though!(for about 300 miles) Did 2 sets of strength drills afterward. |
|
| | 8 loops at 4am at a trotting 8:57 pace. Now I am drinking my morning coffee and will be off to clinicals shortly. Did a little barefoot(okay sockfoot--I'm a wimp) running in the pasture yesterday. Felt good, very light and not a pounding sensation at all. I really liked it. My husband is going to mow me a nice path that will be rock, stick, and sticker free so I can do more little barefoot runs. Should help with injury resistance! |
New Blue Asics Miles: 8.00 |
|
| |
| | 1:19:00/8:42 pace. Took it easy. My feet and back were hurting from the long week on my feet last night. Today they felt okay but took it easy anyway just to be sure. Very pleasant run. Tried to drink water at the halfway point by my house. My husband held the cup out and I tried to drink and run at the same time and it did not work! I got water all over my face and my shirt but not a drop in my mouth! I threw the cup down and sprinted off yelling WAHOO mostly for the benefit of my boys since they were on their bicycles enjoying the spectacle. I guess I need some practice. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.08 |
|
| |
| | 1:06:32/8:10. Felt great today! Did not push the pace, but nor did I hold the reigns in! Just ran however fast I felt like running--but always at a comfortable pace. Such a nice run! The sun was shining, the breeze was cool and refreshing, the birds were singing--I felt joyful! Now I am off to a nice big breakfast courtesy of my husband!
|
New Blue Asics Miles: 8.15 |
|
| |
| | 1:22:08/9:03 pace. I was on a mission today to take it very very easy and mission accomplished. Enjoyed my run. Tried again today to drink water out of a cup on the run. I splashed it all over my face and shirt again but this time actually got two good gulps down. So, there is improvement. My wonderful husband is outside mowing my grass track for barefoot running, and is going to rake all the sticks and rocks out of the path. I can't wait to try it out! |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.08 |
|
| |
| | 1:19:14/8:45 pace. Ran mostly easy except for three bursts of practice 5K race pace since I am running a 5k on Saturday. I was trying to get a feel for a pace that is comfortably very hard. Did a run-by with gatorade and while I still got it all over my face and shirt I successfully swallowed quite a bit as well. It is supposed to be windy this weekend so that stinks. It's an all-women's 5k and the turnout is usually around 1200 so I think this will be a really fun event. |

Emma Creek Women's Classic (3.1 Miles) 00:21:19, Place overall: 2
Well that was just really awesome! It was an all women's 5k--a field of 1027 I believe the announcer said. It was overcast and very humid and windy but the wind helped balance out the humidity so the conditions were not bad at all. My sister-in-law Sasha and I drove to the race together. We jogged around a little while to warm up and that was about it. My legs felt ready to go. We lined up, the horn blew, and I found my comfortably very hard pace that I have been practicing. Surprisingly, I found myself in 5th place at the 1 mile mark--6:52. I still felt really good and just kept going. I was pretty close to 4th place so I finally passed her. Third took a little longer but I passed her at the end of the second mile. I was still feeling good so I decided to go after 2nd place(I was pretty incredulous at this point that I was up front, what is going on?!?). Anyways I got next to the second place girl and got up the wind to surge and pass her and then I was scared that they would all come pass me so I was running pretty hard to stay on pace. Someone started yelling at me to go after first. I could see her and the bicycle so I just concentrated on relaxing and going after her. She was slowing down and I was closing the gap but we were too close to the finish for me to catch her. She finished 16 seconds ahead of me. I am happy with my time and very happy with my placing! I was not totally drained after the race at all and I think I could have pushed the pace harder so at my next 5k I will push harder. I would like to go under 21 minutes on my next try! Sasha did awesome she got 7th place overall with a 22:14! We are going to start going to races together! She placed first in her age group at a 5k last weekend and this weekend took 17 seconds off her time! The awards ceremony was like being on an episode of Oprah! It was gym full of women and everybody cheered for everybody. I had to stand on this podium thingy with the top 3 and hold my bouquet while they took all these pictures. I felt like I was at the olympics or something it was crazy! All of the top 10 got a handcrafted ceramic plate, a bouquet of flowers, a $40 gift certificate to some online fitness store, another $15 gift certificate to road ID, and some chapstick. Craziness! Madness! They go all out at this 5k! I will definitely be back next year! It was totally worth the drive! Went for a 3 mile recovery run at a very slow pace after I picked the kids up and put Vanessa down for her nap.

| | 1:14:33/8:13 pace. It rained and stormed all night last night so the roads were pretty wet. I ran through running water on the road a total of 8 times(it was shallow running water though). I thought the water in my shoes would bother me but it really didn't. I actually really enjoyed my run and felt like a kid running through mud puddles. Just ran at the pace my body felt like running. Did two sets of strength drills afterward. |
|
| |
| | 1:18:41/8:40 pace. Was at work late last night and didn't get much sleep--so I'm tired and took it easy. Gotta run and take my daughter to her 2-year-old checkup. |

|
| | 1:15:18/8:18 pace. It was wet and drizzly today. Started out slow, felt better after about 2.5 miles and ran at moderate effort for a while, then slowed down the last mile. I found a picture of myself running during the 5k on line and it is a HORRID picture taken at a horrid angle and at a really bad millisecond in time(the camera definitely added 10 pounds)...but it looks to me as if I have lousy running form and need to try to clean it up. I worked on that today--fingers loosely curled, arms back and forth, feet landing underneath me, toes straight ahead, relaxed. blah blah blah. http://www.shutterworksphotography.com/gallery/8033088_UgkLy#522824751_N93ox

| |
| | 1:20:56/9:00 pace. Took it super easy today. Took one different road that was very rocky and uneven but it forced me to take a slow pace so that was alright. Very hot and humid. It started to thunder so the last half mile so I booked it home--a Kansas thunderstorm is not something to be caught out in, and tornado season is here. |

| | Thunderstorms all morning today, and I am too busy this afternoon to run, so, I watched the radar like a hawk this morning, found what looked to be a 30 minute gap between storms, and took off in the rain. I wanted to at least squeeze 4 in so I pushed the pace the first 4 miles in 29:27/7:23 pace, then slowed down since the next storm still had not hit. About 2.5 miles later the wind came and the thunder started to roll again so I turned around and booked it home. Total time 53:29/7:43 average pace. I am just glad to get that much in without getting struck by lightning! I was, however, soaked to the bone. Did two sets of strength drills afterward. Dug out size 4 dresses from years ago and attempted to try them on. They FIT! YIPPEEE! Two of them were TOO BIG! I am wearing one tonight for a date with my husband!
|
|
|
| | 2.5 with Vanessa in the stroller in town, then it started to rain pretty hard so I took her home and then ran 6.54 by myself in the drizzle in 57:29/8:47 pace. Had a great time on my date last night! Unfortunately I am working tonight on a shift exchange from 7pm to 7am so I am going to be awfully tired in church tomorrow. Hopefully I can catch a nap today... |

| | 1:19:32/8:46. Nice and easy today. Lo battery on the scale so no official weight today. Still recovering from my sleepless weekend. Two sets of strength drills afterward, will probably try one mile at practice 10k pace tomorrow to get ready for my race Saturday. Did 44:30 last time so I would like to slide in under 44 minutes, about 5 seconds per mile faster--easier said then done, I don't know if in 4 weeks I will have made that many fitness gains. I only have to work tonight and tomorrow then I am off for 5 days! Can't wait! |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.08 |
|
| |
| | First 4.54 in 40:11/8:51 pace. Then one mile in 7:11 at comfortably hard 10k pace. This was 7 seconds faster than my pre-race practice mile 4 weeks ago so hopefully this bodes well for the race Saturday. Cooled down with 3 miles in 26:21/8:47 pace. Felt good. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 8.54 |

|
| | 1:15:16/8:17 average pace. Started out slow, picked up steam as I went, finished the last .46 at 10k race pace with a 50 meter sprint at the end. It was super humid today and I sweated buckets. My husband brought me some gatorade--it tasted great because I was really thirsty--I drank a lot of it but still spilled on my shirt and face. I don't think there is any way out of sloshing some on your shirt and face. If there is a trick then someone please tell me! |

| | 1:19:22/8:54 pace. It was very hot and humid and I am not used to it. Took it easy. Today is day two of my five days off and I am loving it! 10k on Saturday--can't wait! |

| |
| | 9:32 pace. Oh so very slow with 4 short bursts of 10k race pace. It was overcast, hot, and muddy today. I ran a few hours after the thunderstorm. The race starts downtown tomorrow and with 7,000+ participants between the 10k and 2 mile, parking will be a pain. I am planning on parking at the downtown EMS station and then jogging .85 miles to the starting line and that will be my warmup. I am splitting all the kids between 2 grandmas and will pick them all up after the race. I don't know why I like to plan so much on my blog. |

Bank of America River Run (6.2 Miles) 00:42:19, Place overall: 14, Place in age division: 2
What a day! I am STOKED! I feel GREAT! My strategy today was to go out fast enough to not get caught up in the crowd, and then cool it and rock steady for the middle miles, and then pound it home hard for the last mile or two. This is a huge huge race with 3,000 or so I believe in the 10k(okay that's huge to me). Anyways I lined up toward the front, and went out pretty hard. There was gray shirt girl to my right and ahead of me. I was about twenty yards behind her or so through the first mile--6:36. Yikes. A little fast but I feel good and the pace does not feel strained. I tell myself to cool it there are still 5.2 miles to go. 2-mile split is 13:40. Okay I meant to cool it but not that much. I pick it up a notch, still on gray shirt's tail and I can see hot pink lady ahead of her. 3-mile split it twenty something. Good. Under 21 minutes and I want to stay sub-7. We hit the turn around, out of the wind now, so it feels hot all of the sudden. I still feel good. 4-mile split is 27:4?. Still at sub-7 pace. I can feel my body starting to work and wanting to get into some sort of groove but I don't want to slow down. I start repeating the mantra "don't get comfortable" to myself over and over again. "Relax, don't get comfortable." I say this to myself pretty much the rest of the race. Somewhere around here I move past gray shirt girl. 5-mile split is 34:17. I'm doing a little mental math while I'm running. Sub-44 is in the bag. Sub-43 is very possible. Breathing is hard but I don't feel terribly strained. Calves are burning a tiny bit. I like that 5 mile split, so I decide to PUSH. Only 1.2 miles just PUSH IT. I pick it up and just start running HARD. I pass pink shirt lady. She puts up a fight but I get past her. It's a ways away, but I can see the douglas street bridge, and I know when I turn that corner I'm home free so I push as hard as I can go without all-out sprinting. This part of the race, the last mile, hurt the most, I'm a little nauseated. As a tear around the corner someone tells me I am 14th woman. Better than I expected in this race after looking at last year's times. I start sprinting all out. As I tear down the home stretch I see the clock. 42:09, 42:10, 42:11--SERIOUSLY!? HOLY COW! I just look at the finish line and go. 42:19 is my guess for finish time--won't know the official results until they are posted in the Sunday paper tomorrow. I will find out then if I got an age group award--they only do the top 3 overall at this awards ceremony since this is the big riverfest and a lot is going on downtown. I'm very excited with my time--I did not see this coming! My two year old Vanessa ran in the tot trot. She was second in her heat. I was so proud of her--she knew exactly what to do and just ran straight to the finish line(40 meter dash). Those little two year olds racing is the cutest thing ever!

| | First did 9.08 in 1:19:36/8:46 pace. Took it nice and easy--I still have a little bit of lingering soreness in my rear end and hamstrings from the race Saturday. Came home and did two circuits of strength drills, then back out for 1 mile in 9:12 with Jesse. Came back in and stretched a little--no appetite this morning(odd for me), so choked down a packet of instant oatmeal and some milk. Back to the grind today at work. I have done some thinking about the trail half in June and am paranoid about turning my ankles, so I think I am going to forego the half in June and go for a 5k pr June 6th instead. I will save my first half for a fast flat one in September. That gives me nearly 5 months to work on my fitness and translate my current 10k pace into my half-marathon pace. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 10.08 |
|
| |
| | First 8.54 in 1:12:33/8:30 pace. Then went inside and stretched for a minute while Jesse got his shoes on. Back out for one mile with Jesse in 9:28. He is talking about going out for track and cross-country. I hope he does. I am really going to work on getting him to run with me. Once again, not a big appetite after my run. Ate some oatmeal and milk anyway--I have a feeling it will be like yesterday and I will suddenly be voraciously hungry in the afternoon and eat everything in sight. It is very humid, overcast, and just muggy and sticky. Makes me feel sluggish. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.54 |
|
| |
| | 1:12:38/8:55 pace. Nice and casual today. Need to up mileage with caution so only 8.15 today, will do 9 tomorrow. Off work for three days! Yeah! I will be getting ready for Brandon's high school graduation on Sunday afternoon--we are having a get together at our house afterwards. I cannot BELIEVE he is almost a high school graduate. Wow. Wow. Wow. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 8.15 |

|
| | 1:11:43/7:54. I just felt great today. Legs felt great, breathing felt great, the sun was shining, a cool breeze wafted over me no matter what direction I went. Running felt easy, even going up hills I felt like I was floating. All runs should feel this good. I have to go to a 4 hour mandatory service-wide continuing medical education class today. Way to impinge on my day off. |

First did 6 miles with Vanessa in the stroller and forgot to stop my watch so I don't know what the time was. Talk about running slow but working hard--run into a headwind with a stroller and the sunshield up like a sail--it takes a tremendous amount of energy and some huffing and puffing to keep moving. I wasn't running very fast but I may as well have just run a race after that 6 miles was done. Stopped, stretched, stopped at the post office, then drove home and did 2.38 more recovery at 8:45 pace. Felt a little light-headed at the end and decided it was time for food and water so walked in the house, still feeling light-headed, and went straight for the bottle of gatorade and a big bowl of raisin bran. Man was I hungry. I finished the first bowl and then ate a second one. Still hungry, so had a piece of toast with peanut butter. Need to do strength drills but will do them later today.
Updated: 8pm finally did the strength drills. I know it's silly at this point and I almost skipped them altogether but I think they are part of my injury-free maintenance so I felt paranoid and finally did them with Queen playing and the kids dancing. We will rock you. I have been eating nonstop all day. You would think I was starving.

| | 1:26:04/8:36 pace. 5am. Meant to get 10 in and then have a little alone time before the kids got up. Got home and Nick and Ian were up watching television. I sent them back to bed! Boy are they mad at me. Long day today. I have to finish up preparations for Brandon's graduation tomorrow, then off to work for the last day of riverfest, which should have us out and about running calls until after midnight. Church tomorrow, then graduation, then home to barbecue and host post-graduation party. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 10.00 |
|
| |
| | Church was good today. Brandon graduated from high school. We had a barbecue afterwards at our place. It was good to have everyone together. Our extended, blended family has been through a lot. I did not expect to be emotional but I am a little bit. Now the hard work really starts for Brandon, I hope he finds a direction soon. It's been a great day, and after we drop Brandon off at project graduation for the lock-in I think I am going to have a drink--as in a real drink. I haven't decided yet if I want beer or something more fruity. |
| |
| | 1:21:27/8:58 pace. By last night my cold I have been fighting got me in full force. I skipped the beer I planned on having and just went to bed. Slept like a rock. Woke up with a stuffy nose, sore throat, and laryngitis. Decided to run but take it super easy. Halfway through I made a phone call to my husband and managed to croak out hoarsely that I would like some water. I even stopped and stood there and drank the water and didn't try to run and drink. Amazingly, by the last few miles of the run I started to feel a lot better! I am still hoarse and can't breathe through my nose but the fatigue seems to have lifted--for now anyway. Also surprising is my appetite despite the fact that I can't hardly taste my food. Put away an egg, a few ounces of grilled chicken, and 4 or 5 pancakes at breakfast. I have always been a girl who likes to eat. My husband said one of the things that attracted him to me when we first started dating is how I shamelessly cleaned my plate when we went out to eat. Nothing's changed! |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.08 |
|
| |
| | 1:16:45/8:27 pace. Still struggling with this cold. It has moved into my chest and I am coughing a lot. Hope I cough it all out and start getting better soon. My voice is a bit better today so I won't be croaking at my patients. This cold has me feeling crummy but for some reason when I am running I feel better and breathe better--that doesn't make any sense to me. Strange. Came home and gulped water(I was thirsty), did one circuit of strength drills, ate breakfast(a little bit of hashbrowns, egg, milk, juice, banana), then did another circuit of drills. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.08 |
|
| |
| | 1:15:56/8:53 pace. It is hot and windy today, and I am tired. Still fighting this cold. Was planning on doing an all-out mile tomorrow on the track to see if I could take a swipe at my high school PR, but I don't feel well so I will probably postpone. Off to another day of work. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 8.54 |
|
| |
| | I still have a cold, but, my husband was all about coming to the track with me and calling splits so I figured why not and down to the track we went. My workout routine needed a little variety today anyway. Warmed up 5 laps then decided to go for it. My official time 1600 meter time--6:06--still 8 seconds away from highschool pr. Splits were 89, 90, 96, 91. Clearly I totally lost it in the third lap. The good news is, the pace did not feel overly strained, but it was definitely hard work. I am kicking myself for letting it slip in the third lap--I think I could have hit 6:00 on the nose if I had concentrated. Maybe I will try again next week with no cold and focus on the third lap. I think my high school pr is in reach. I am curious, though, as to what my top end speed in the mile is. Only time will tell. The strange news--my husband commented something I used to hear all the time when I was younger--that it was strange to watch me run. He said my stride is noticeably short, and it is astonishing to see me run that fast. He says it is just "strange" to watch and words cannot describe it, that it just looks odd. I have heard this and similar comments again and again--things like"I've never seen anything like it" and "it is just odd" and "I don't know how you do it". That's it--I need a videotape of myself running to see what all the fuss is about. Anyways, enough talk about how weird a short, stumpy girl looks when she runs. Ran 800 to cool down, drove home, and then ran 4 more miles easy at 9:01 pace. The last 2 or 3 months I have been having small cutbacks in mileage every other week and this probably helps keep me injury-free so I will keep up the pattern. Last week was 55(highest ever), so I will probably hit 49-50 this week. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 6.75 |
|
| |
| | First 6 with Vanessa in the stroller--I forgot to stop my watch at first but it was about 9:00 pace--hard work for a slower run as always. After 6 stopped at the playground so Vanessa could get out of the stroller and play, and stretched while she played. Next drove home and ran 2 more on my own as a cooldown at 8:45 pace. Will do strength drills a little later. Right now I am just too tired from my late night at work and my way-too-early morning. We are supposed to get off at 11:30 and right when I went to log off we got dispatched. Oh well. Overtime. Got home about 1am, took a while to fall asleep, and then the phone starts ringing at 6:30am. So much for sleeping in. Maybe I will get 8 hours of sleep tonight(a rare treat). Cold is better. I am still a little hoarse and my breathing, while not difficult, is a bit noisy and rattles from the gunk I am coughing out of the back of my throat. Hopefully this thing is about over--I do feel better. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 8.00 |
|
| |
| | 1:21:45/8:11 pace. Up at 5am for an early run before the kids get up. Cold is almost gone, just a little bit of a cough and sniffle left. I am now an advocate for running through a cold, I seem to have recovered faster. Did two sets of drills afterwards. Nicholas has Hershey track and field practice today. He is doing the 400 meter dash, softball throw, and long jump. His meet is next Saturday--I can't wait and neither can he! I really need to scope out some high-energy summer activities for the two younger boys in particular--they need a good outlet for their incredible amounts of energy. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 10.00 |

|
| | 1:24:49/8:29 pace. Felt okay. It was hot outside. I was out the door a little after 7 am but the temps were already climbing and it was close to 80 when I finished. I know that's not horribly hot but I am not used to it. I have decided to do a 5k on June 6th and I am looking forward to a pr. Plan is to get into the low 20's. Considering how hard a 6:06 mile was last week I don't think sub-20 is in the cards just yet. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 10.00 |
|
| |
| | 1:20:40/8:54 pace. Nice and easy today. Felt wonderful. It was overcast and cooler, in the 70's, with a nice breeze. Amazing how much easier it is to run in a bit cooler weather. Did two circuits of strength drills afterwards. Weight is coming down a little bit--I think from being over 50 miles a week consistently. I still feel healthy and am eating a lot. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.07 |
|
| |
| | 1:11:24/7:51 pace. Overcast, a little windy rainy. I was soaked almost immediately, but it was warm enough that the rain did not make me miserably cold. Ran a little faster than usual, but I was in the mood and something about running fast in wind and rain felt pleasantly rebellious. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.08 |
|
| |
| | 1:21:27/8:58 pace. Took it very nice and easy today. Felt good. Had no inclination to move any faster. Last day of work before being off for the weekend. Yeah! |

I got a garmin! My husband got me one on ebay and it arrived yestereday afternoon! I got to play with it today and how FUN and interesting. First 6 miles with Vanessa in the stroller in 53:22/8:53 pace--you can tell where I had to stop for lights and to throw shoes back into the stroller--splits 9:02/9:16/8:37/8:46/8:37/8:59. Then came home for two more on my own 8:57/8:23--was going to do more but was getting that lightheaded numb-legged feeling and decided to call it quits for now. It is hot--85 degrees--perhaps that has to do with the weird feeling? I did drink water during the run. Will do strength drills tomorrow or maybe later. update: did 20 minutes of abs with Denise Austin

| | 1:21:41/8:09 average. Got up at 5am to run before my busy day. Just got up, got dressed, and went out the door. No breakfast, no coffee, no drink of water. Of course I was armed with my Garmin! I am having so much fun with it. Felt pretty tired in the legs, about mile 8 decided to kick it up a notch for the last two miles to practice running hard when fatigued. Interesting to see my splits. 9:04/8:33/8:24/8:23/8:13/8:08/8:09/7:59/7:27/7:09/last little bit is 5:12 pace(kick to the end). Nick has his track meet today. He will be doing softball throw, long jump, and 400 meter dash. I can't wait! I am going to take him out for ice cream afterward. |

| |
| | 1:15:19/8:21 average. Slow start as always. Did .45 in the middle at comfortably very hard pace which the Garmin called 6:55--hopefully this translates into 6:30 pace or so for my 5k Saturday--I know comfortably hard on these dirt roads translated from 7:11 pace to 6:48 pace on my last race--we will find out on Saturday! I am shooting for as close to 20 minutes as possible--I would love to go under but don't want to set an unrealistic goal. Did 10 minutes of abs with a Denise Austin video I got. It has 7 different 10-minute ab workouts. I am a huge fan of Denise Austin--she never promoted any of this super-skinny anorexic diet until you die stuff--she is a strong-looking woman who is not ridiculously thin. Splits were 9:26/9:24/8:28/8:09/.47 at 7:58 pace/.45 at 6:55 pace/8:24/8:12/8:05/7:55/7:54 pace for last little bit. Clearly I am a person who takes a few miles to warm up. Rest of my runs this week will be nice and easy!

|
| |
| | 9:07 average pace. Took it really easy and restrained myself. It was cool today, in the 60's, and the run felt great. Just ran wherever I felt and let the Garmin measure the distance--kinda nice! Ran a few roads I haven't run in a while. Only encountered one dog who just barked at me. |

Well, I didn't make the low 20's so I am a bit disappointed, but it is still a 42 second 5k p.r. for me so chin up right? I'm not sure what to take from this race. I started fast, felt good, then about the halfway point just laid down and died. I wasn't really miserable, I just suddenly didn't feel like running hard and wanted to run off the course and call it a day. Usually I can power through the mid-race mental battle but not today. My splits per the Garmin reflect what happened. mile 1 --6:19(didn't feel too fast)
mile 2--6:48(it just gets worse from here out) mile 3--6:55(just getting one foot in front of the other to finish) last little bit 5:40 pace--maxed out at 4:17 pace(at least I mustered up a kick) The cons: not the time I wanted, lost the mental battle that I usually win The pros: still a pr, 2 mile spit is only 7 seconds slower than my 2 mile high school pr, there is more speed in my legs than I thought judging from my kick and max pace, 3rd woman overall, 18th person overall, won my age division, good pancakes afterward and I like the t-shirt
In two weeks there is another 5k close by and I intend to get some redemption! plan to run a recovery run here shortly after Vanessa goes down for her nap. update: ran 5.5 easy. didn't bother timing it. 90+ degrees, windy, dusty, pretty miserable, good thing I'm going to a wedding tonight and plan on having a good time(plus I get a date with my husband, NO CHILDREN--:) that doesn't happen often, just David and I! :)

|
| |
| | 1:47:25/8:20 average pace. Felt great. It stormed all night and was still pretty cool this morning. It heated up during the run but not too bad. First "long" run since January. Took it easy and felt better and better as the run went on. Was cruising quite happily the last few miles--could've kept going easily. I have come to the conclusion that one of the problems with my 5k is I am not warming up enough. Next 5k I am going to do an experiment and put in a a good 25 minutes of jogging right up until the start of the race with a few strides. Splits today 9:32/8:42/8:47/8:33/8:31/8:36/8:15/8:09/7:58/8:06/7:57/7:45/last .88@7:23 pace. 10 minutes of abs with Denise Austin afterwards. |

| |
| | A true recovery run today. Legs are tired--not sore, just tired. I ran at a whopping 9:51 average pace :) How's that for taking it easy? Actually felt very refreshed and rested afterward. Off for a big breakfast with family and then another day at work. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.12 |

9:12 average pace. Slow but not as slow as yesterday! Still taking it easy--legs are enjoying the break and so am I. I am really putting in the miles this week so need to take it easy. Have to work until midnight and then get up at 4am tomorrow to get ready and drive to Hutchinson for a clinical beginning at 630am. Yuck. 12 hour clinical and then drive all the way home. If I get a run in tomorrow, and that's a big "if", it will be a very short one in the evening. Husband is at a meeting right now--they called him in to meet with the plant vice-president--we think it is to lay him off but don't know for sure. I am eagerly awaiting his call to see what happened. Sigh. Update: laid off effective immediately. we anticipated this as a possibility so it is not a complete shock

| | worked 11 hours. came home. slept 3 hours. got up. drove for an hour and a half, did an 11 hour clinical. drove home an hour and a half. my feet and back hurt and I am deliriously tired. no run today for fear I might break something if I try it :). I'll be back at it tomorrow morning after a good night's sleep! |
| |
| | Since my husband is home I got to sleep in today. I slept for 10 HOURS. I cannot remember the last time I slept that much. Laid in bed for a while after I woke up and listened to the thunderstorm. It was pretty relaxing. Ran 6.03 miles with Vanessa in the stroller at 9:14 average pace, then let her play at the playground while I stretched and drank a bottle of water. Then we got the mail and I brought her home and ran 4.47 more on my own at 8:57 average pace--mostly because I ran the last half mile fast because I was really thirsty and wanted to get home and get some water. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 10.50 |
|
| |
| | 9:03 average pace. Did one fast mile and "made it count" in 6:37. Felt very good during the fast mile--was in a comfortable rythm, could've easily sustained the pace--I will be looking for that rythm in my 5k next week. Off to another clinical today--but it least it does not start so early, is not very far away, and should be over in 9 hours as opposed to 11 or 12. Good luck to all those running races today! |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.52 |

| |
| | 1:36:50/9:06 average pace overall. All slow miles, except for in the middle. It took me a while to warm up, as always, but after about mile 5 I felt the wind in my sails and was drifting under 9:00 pace and just could not make myself go slower. I figured since I still have until Saturday one Sasha mile or so would be good to get the speed out of my system, and I needed to practice running hard on asphalt in the heat, since this will be my race conditions Saturday. I ran one mile in 6:30 and .17 more at 6:24 pace. Didn't exactly feel comfortable since this is basically 5k race pace but it did feel sustainable, although I suspect mile 3 at this pace will take a lot of concentration. It was sufficient to take the wind out of my sails and I ran the rest of the way slowly. I think I can break 20:00 on Saturday if I am in the right frame of mind. All super slow miles the rest of this week to rest mind and body and see if I can make it happen. Did 2 sets of strength drills afterward. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 10.63 |

| | 10 miles at a very leisurely 9:46 pace. Felt good. 10 minutes of abs with Denise Austin afterward. Off to work. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 10.00 |
|
| |
| | 10 at approximately 9:30 pace. Garmin was charging and I meandered around a bit so this is an estimate but I am sure I went at least 10 if not a little over. It is so hot and humid this morning. Temps have been getting in the 90's all week and are supposed to get close to 100 the next few days. My husband brought me some gatorade about 4 miles into the run today, and then I chugged the rest of the bottle when I was done. Weight is down but I think it is from the heat although I have been drinking lots of water. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 10.00 |
|
| |
| | 9:25 average pace. Slept in and got out for my run a little later than usual and boy does it heat up early these days. It was HOT. It may get up to 100 degrees today. I chugged some gatorade halfway through but I was still very thirsty and ready to be done at the end. Chugged a massive amount of water and gatorade afterward. Off to work. Will probably just do 4 easy tomorrow with a few surges and consider myself as race ready as I will ever be. Hubby will be there to cheer me on!--I guess there is an upside to his unemployment! He will find somthing soon we hope. |
New Blue Asics Miles: 9.00 |
|
| |
| | 9:12 average pace. Miles 3 and 4 were under 9 minutes because in each mile I did an approximately 150 meter surge of race pace. The pace felt okay but the heat really takes it out of me. The heat will be a factor tomorrow--hopefully I can get past it. |

Hammer it 5k (3.1 Miles) 00:20:37, Place overall: 1 | | aaaaaaaa! No sub-20 today. What are the chances of running the exact time again? This is the unofficial time per my garmin but should be close. Well, I WON! Totally disappointed in my time but not disappointed in the $100 I went home with. Now, here is my bag of excuses for the time: it was pouring rain, I was soaked. I could hear the water squishing in my shoes the whole time. Here is the breakdown: Mile 1--6:47. uphill all the way. I start in the lead. I need to do more hill training. I can hear my shoes--squish squish squish, lots of mud puddles and splashing Mile 2--6:51. I get passed right at the beginning. I am determined to stay with her. I let her pull me and never let her gap me by more than 10 meters. We are on this bike path that curves and turns CONSTANTLY. I feel like I am breaking stride all the time and turning corners. Total speed killer. squish squish squish my shoes are full of water Mile 3--6:22. We veer of the bike path onto the road and I kick it into gear and pass her. I stay in gear all the way to the end. I see the 20:30's on the clock and am disappointed but I am glad I won. I squish all the way to the soggy end. what happened? I went out too slow--way too slow. I wanted to be a little more conservative at the beginning but I totally overdid it. The course was not a fast PR course but it shouldn't have killed my time that bad. At the end, alas, I felt I had WAY too much left in the tank. What have I learned? I need to know the feel of my target pace and hit it right from the beginning in a 5k, and then just push harder. I need to do some hill training. I need to keep working on my fitness. I may go to a track in a few weeks and do an all-out 5k just to see the underside of 20 if it is possible. I hope everyone did well in their races today!

New Blue Asics Miles: 8.20 |
|
| |
| | 8:29 average pace. Kept the pace conversational but did not force myself to go slower because I did not want to stay in the heat longer than necessary. Will run slower the rest of the week when I am not going as far. Felt fine other than the stifling heat and humidity. My husband brought me gatorade and checked on me every 30 minutes. We are under a "heat advisory" today and no end in sight all week and probably longer--it's supposed to hit 105 today. No races on the horizon. I either work or have clinicals most Saturdays throughout July so probably no races until August. The next 5 or 6 weeks I would like to get adjusted to 60 miles a week, and every other week or so try on a long run for size. I also want to be consistent about doing some core workouts 3x/week. Got some shoes with my prize money--I should be okay with shoes now for at least the next 3 months--nice to get shoes without dipping into the family budget! Great shoes--really light and flexible--had no problems running in them today.

| |
| | 9:18 average pace. Temps in the 80's and very humid. Husband brought me gatorade twice and I chugged it. Did 2 sets of strength drills afterward. We finally broke down and turned on the air conditioner in the house because it is going to be over 100 degrees all week. Feels good! |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 10.00 |

| |
| | 8:54 average pace. I sound like a broken record but geez it is HOT. I didn't get out until after 8am and it was already in the 80's and the humidity is stifling. Today was a hard run for me heatwise my sweat was just pooling and dripping and didn't feel like it was evaporating. I couldn't wait to get out of it! I stopped once to make sure I got a good hit by a rotatating sprinkler and then stopped 3 other times to chug gatorade. I wish I could get out earlier but don't get home from work until after midnight so I just don't get up as early as I should..maybe this weekend I can have an earlier morning or two. Came home and did 10 minutes of core pilates with Denise Austin. |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 10.08 |

| |
| | 8:57 average pace. Tried putting my shirt in cold water before the run and it really helped! Thanks for the suggestion Julie--the first half of my run was much more bearable in the heat! Actually felt good running for the first time all week so did a Sasha mile in 6:42 from mile 7 to 8. The rest of mile miles were very easy. Getting ready to gorge on some breakfast and then maybe some abs before work. |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 9.59 |
|
| |
| | 8:58 average pace. Maybe it's the wet shirt, or perhaps a bit more of a breeze today, or maybe I am just acclimating, but anyway, I felt good on the run today. The heat didn't bother nearly as much as it has the rest of the week. Off to enjoy my weekend off and get ready for my sister to come into town. |
|
| |
| | 8:22 average pace. Great workout today! Got started a little before 6am and it was much cooler(at least if felt that way). Legs felt great. I felt great. Ran 4 very slow, then 2 miles fast--first 1 6:51, then 6:45, two more slow miles, one more fast in 6:42, 1 more slow to cool down. Third fast mile felt easier than the first two. Maybe I always need to warm up 8 miles :) First 60-mile + week ever! Nothing hurts, not sore, feel great! |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 10.06 |
|
| |
| | 8:28 average pace. Felt great today, ran early enough that it wasn't too hot. Mileage is up and weight went up with it, as usual, will probably drop in a few weeks after my body adjusts. I have no idea why it works that way. Off to enjoy the morning with my sister before I go to work!(she came into town last night) |

| |
| | 9:07 average pace. Nice and easy. Slept in and got out a little late, so it was heating up towards the end, but not too bad. I have a group of fellow paramedics and some firefighters that are all going to a 5k race on the morning of the 4th of July. I am considering going because it will be fun to run with people I know and it is a small-town race with an entry fee of only $10, but I will be fresh off an overnight shift (6pm to 6am) so I will be terribly tired and may not have time to get much of a warm up. I dunno. I probably won't decide until that morning. I may just go and run and hang out and get my Saturday run in rather than all-out race effort, and then go home and go to bed since I have another night shift Saturday night. Then again, I am a competitive gal and the temptation to try and chick all the guys I know may be more than I can take...or I may just be so tired I go home and don't run at all. We will see. |

| | 8:24 average pace. Started out really slow. Explored some new country roads--wasn't sure about the dog situation so my husband escorted me in the car for about 6 miles of the run--ran into four dogs. Ended up running a little more briskly keeping the care in sight. Had a few miles under 8 minutes. Breathing was easy, never "pushed" the pace--stayed comfortable. It's our Anniversary! Too bad I have to work. We celebrated with a date this weekend and I had flowers and chocolate waiting for me when I got off work last night! My husband is the BEST! |

| | 8:21 average pace. Drove to Andover to run with some different scenery. Ran all around and through the park, then ran all around the big north housing addition, then ran south by all the schools and into another housing addition on some dirt roads, finally turned around and ran back, passed a track, so decided to jog onto it and do a 400 for fun. Ran 400 in 90 seconds and felt so good I decided to make it an 800. Completed the second 400 in 93 seconds, jogged a lap, then ran another 90 second 400, then jogged off the track and back to the park and my car. Other than my rendezvous with the track kept the pace easy--am surprised I was running sub-9 miles. It rained right before I ran and was nice and cool--68 degrees when I started. No breakfast, no water, no fuel, and felt fine throughout the whole run. Am surprised at how much easier 6:00 pace feels now. Will probably not race on the 4th. There is a cross-country 5k on the 11th, I'm off that day, and haven't run cross-country in a long time. I will probably wait and race then. |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 10.46 |

| | 9:33 average pace. Tired legs. Took it slow and easy on dirt and gravel roads. Got a lot to do and maybe a nap before my all-nighter. Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend! |

| |
| | 8:48 average pace. Came home from work at 6:45 am exhausted, flopped into bed, and did not sleep so well. Tossed and turned until 12:23 and then gave up and got up. I am just not used to sleeping during the day. Oh well. Only one more night and then back to a normal schedule for a while. Drank some coffee, ate 2 nutrigrain bars, putted around a bit, and then went for my run. It is in the mid-eighties and so humid you could just choke on the air, so not a comfy run. Chugged gatorade twice. Wanted to stop/not run at all because I am just plain tired and want to lay around and do nothing. Made a deal with myself that I could cut the run short of 10 miles as long as I hit 60 for the week, which I did! Yeah! Two weeks in a row. Next week will be easier when I don't have this night shift stuff going on. Happy Independence Day everybody! Off to spend some time with my family before a night full of folks burning and blowing themselves up, and then getting drunk and fighting and shooting each other(okay hopefully it's not that bad but the gun and knife club has been busier than usual lately). |
|
| |
| | 1:58:09/8:20 average pace. Tried a long run today. Got up early to beat the heat and the 70 degree air felt wonderful. Ran the first 8 miles easy on country roads, then allowed myself to pick up the pace for the last 6 miles in asphalt as long as I felt good and wasn't straining. Stopped twice for swigs of gatorade but really didn't chug it--I wasn't hot and thirsty. No breakfast. Didn't experience depletion or any sort of wall. Must happen further along in a run. Felt fantastic the whole time! Splits were 9:27/9:02/8:58/9:02/8:44/8:46/8:27/8:12/8:04/7:49/7:39/7:43/7:44/7:22/last .15 in 1:04(6:57pace). Off for a BIG breakfast that my husband is cooking! |

| | 9:20 average pace. Took it nice and easy. Felt good. Suffered no ill effects from yesterday's long run. Hope everyone has a wonderful day! |

|
| | 7:48 average pace. A wacky run today. Slept for 8 hours(WOW!) and didn't get started until 9am. Anyways it was a bit overcast and I started for another easy 10 when it began to rain, and then began to lightning and thunder. I hurried home so as not to get struck by lightning and only got in about 2.3 miles. Well it looked like it had cleared a bit later so I went back out but only ran 1 quick mile because I saw cloud to ground lightning 3 times. Went back in, looked at the radar online, and realized it would be a bit before I could safely run again. I played with the kids, packed my lunch for work, and then it finally quit lightning enough I could go back out. Of course at this time, I am on the clock and need to get showered and ready for work so I ticked off 5 miles pretty quick and then threw in the towel and came in. Hopefully the weather will cooperate a bit more tomorrow! |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 8.34 |
|
| |
| | 10 easy 9:14 average pace. I am going to run a 5k race on Saturday, so will probably reduce mileage a bit tomorrow and run easy. After the 5k I'm going to run the 1 mile race with Vanessa in the stroller. Should be fun! Had golf ball sized hail in the storm that came through last night and all the cars are dimpled. |
|
| |
| | 6 very easy at 9:39 pace with two .1 mile bursts of 6:20 pace. This is the pace I need to run tomorrow. It feels fast. I just need to be confident that I have the fitness to do it and not be afraid of the pace and get psyched out and slow down. My 11 day work stretch is over! Yeah! I am officially on vacation for a week but unfortunately have a week full of nursing clinicals starting Monday. I am officially registered for a 1/2 marathon on August 8 at lake Marion. It is described as a challenging course that is hilly in the parts around the lake(we will be in the Flint Hills) and is run on both asphalt and country roads. We are bringing the whole family and friends and camping all weekend. It should be a lot of fun! I am going to give it a good hard effort and get a feel for the half-marathon distance, and use it as practice for the half-marathon in September where I will be going for a good time and place. |

| Race: |
Run to Cheney (3.1 Miles) 00:19:59, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1 | | Finally! Sub-20! (barely). I am excited about my time, but know I could've done better if I hadn't slacked in the second mile. Anyways, on to the report. Woke up at 5:00am, had half a cup off coffee, got dressed, got in the care and made the one hour drive to Cheney. Drank water and ate a banana on the way. Got there, registered, walked around a bit, and then ran the course in reverse very slow(10:00 pace.) It was super hot and humid and I was drenched after the warm-up but I have gotten used to being icky hot and it really wasn't bothering me much. My husband and three youngest kids came to cheer me on! Mile 1: 6:17--Feel pretty good, definitely working but not in trouble. Have settled into second place and 1st place is already way ahead--this girl is out of my league and I will not be able to catch her.
Mile 2: 6:45--I hear the guy call the split(13:02) and realize I have gotten way too comfortable in the second mile. Shoot! I was napping! Why do I always do this in the second mile? I am truthfully more comfortable than I should be at this point in a 5k. I kick it up a gear--I can still get sub-20 but it's going to be work. Mile 3: 6:29--As I turn down the last straightway I am picking up more and more steam. As I cross the 3 mile mark I am already unfolding into my kick. They actually have someone calling the 3 mile split. 19:31. I have 29 seconds to get to the finish line. I kick with more urgency than I think I ever have before. Up on my toes, eyeballs bulging, crazy face, terminator arms, making my body go as fast as it possibly can. .1/28 seconds, 4:40 pace. My watch reads 19:58 but official time is 19:59 so I'll go with that. In retrospect, I need to learn to push harder in the middle of a 5k. This is my weak spot where I lose time, and it seems to be a pattern. I am, however, happy with my kick. I would like to learn to kick longer at the same speed. I cooled down, drank some water and gatorade, jogged a mile, then strapped Vanessa into the stroller for the one mile. Part of the mile was on gravel and dirt with potholes and poor Vanessa was bouncing around like crazy! She started talking about the barking doggy so obviously it didn't bother her. I careened around corners with the stroller on two wheels and ran on the outside so I wouldn't plow people over. We finished in 6:48, good enough for second place! I was just happy to break 7:00 with a stroller(that was my goal). Overall a good workout today. I can already feel it in my legs--I will be sore. Next long-term goal is to break 19:00 in the 5k. I know this will take a long time and will not happen right away, but I think it is possible.

| | 8:39 average pace. Ran easy in town. Did 4 miles easy and then jogged onto the track. They were setting up for some event so I jogged a lap and then did one 200 meter dash from a standstill in a very unimpressive 34 seconds. That's okay--I'm still going to break 19 in the 5k :). Anyways off to a busy clinical day. Longish run tomorrow. |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 10.03 |

|
| | 8:42 average pace. Took it easy, drank gatorade 3 times. It is already 76 degrees and humid whens starting at 6am. Tomorrow will be tricky to get a run in. I have to leave town by 430am to get to my clinical in Salina at 630am, do a 12 hour clinical, spend the night there, do another 12 hours the next morning, then drive home. Maybe one hour of running from 3am to 4am? It depends on what time I get to bed and if it is storming in the morning or not. Any way you cut it tomorrow is going to start ridiculously early. |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 11.60 |

| |
| | 8:09 average pace. Had a hard time falling asleep last night and decided to take the extra hour rather than run in the morning. Worked out well because we were released from clinicals early so I decided to drive home rather than stay the night. Drove to my mother's house to pick up my daughter, who was napping, so I went on a run on the city sidewalks in Wichita. Ran through some nice neighborhooods. It was drizzly and humid, but only about 78 degrees. I don't much care for running on concrete, it is too much pounding, but it does make for a faster pace with less effort. I will stick to my soft dirt roads tomorrow evening when I make it back into town. Got to spend all day in NICU and actually really enjoyed my clinical in there today. Cuddling and feeding tiny babies all day is fine with me! Gotta get to bed soon cuz tomorrow is another 4am morning. |
Mizuno Waverider 12 Miles: 10.09 |

| |
| | 8:49 average pace. 7pm. 87 degrees but not too humid, so not a bad run. I was really tired from my long day but felt okay once I got going. No 4am tomorrow morning, mercifully. Ah sleep here I come! |

| | 8:56 average pace. Still tired and taking it easy. Tomorrow is my nightmare day and then my busy week will be over at last. It will start with an all day clinical in pediatrics and then straight from clinical to an all night shift in downtown Wichita otherwise known as crack alley so it will be busy on Saturday night, I am thinking a nap today and a full night's sleep tonight is on the menu. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! |

| | 8:47 average pace. Yeah--made it through another 60 mile week. Have a 16 miler planned for Monday. I wonder how Julie is doing in her half-marathon right now. Run Julie Run! Anyways off to enjoy breakfast with my children before I spend a clinical day in pediatrics, then after that a night shift at post 10. I will be rolling into bed half-dead tomorrow morning. |

| | 8:35 average pace. Was going to do 16 miles, but when I looked at the radar this morning on tv, there was a storm coming in. It looked like it would pass north of us, so I started my run. It started raining and I was just going to keep running through, but then the thunder and lightning started and when it was hitting all around me and the thunder was deafening, I had to abandon ship. My last mile was all at sub-7 pace because I was running home fast for fear I would get struck by lightning because it was getting WAY too close. Did 10 minutes of abs plus two circuits of strength drills. I will try again for the long run tomorrow but it may storm again in the morning so I may have to push it all the way to Wednesday morning. If it dies down before I go to work I may go out and police up a few more miles today. Anyways I feel great today--did a lot of sleeping yesterday and last night. |

| | 8:03 average pace. Drank half a cup of coffee and went for it. Kicked it into a higher gear for the last 6 miles did 7:30ish pace. Legs and breathing felt fine the whole time but definitely feeling a little fatigued the last 3 miles. Decided to run through it anyway. Drank 16 oz gatorade total throughout the run. Downed a massive breakfast and off to work. |

| | First drove into Rose Hill and did 6 easy with Vanessa in the stroller. Garmin battery died so don't know the pace and that's fine. Then got the mail, went home, and David and the boys had gone to Wal-Mart, so me and Vanessa drove into Andover where there is this awesome playground and did 4 more in the stroller, and then played on the playground and then came back home. Vanessa re-fueled throughout with gatorade and pop-tarts :) She is such a good girl. Then went to mom's and ate sushi and now I'm at work and so far it's quiet. Hope it stays that way. Have a little plantar fascitis in my r foot. Wondering if it is the Mizunos since I never had it with my cheap asics shoes. |

9:13 average pace. A very gentle run on dirt roads, although I hit every hill in about a 2 mile radius and ran up it, although slowly. Okay, I call them hills, other folks would probably call them bumps but they are the best I can do since I live on a pancake.

| | 8:53 average pace. Slept in, spent the morning hanging out with my children, then we all went to pizza hut buffet to eat. Filled up on a big plate of salad but managed to find room for a piece of beef pizza, a piece of dessert pizza, and a cinnamon breadstick. Then went home and put the kids down for a nap. David mowed the lawn and I went and ran in the heat of day--91 degrees according to tv, 95 degrees according to the bank sign. Carried a bottle of water with me and ran on soft dirt roads. It will be easy miles on soft dirt roads until this PF in my right foot clears up. It all started last Saturday when I did that 24 hour work/clinical stint well my foot didn't like being stood on that long. I thought maybe it was the Mizuno shoes but then it would have started earlier. I've had it before--cleared up pretty quick as long as a follow the rules--no concrete or asphalt, easy pace, and aleve every 12 hours for the first week or so. Anyways its not bad--doesn't bother me on runs--only first thing in the morning or when I get up after having been sitting for a while. Off to shower before the natives awaken. |

| | 8:31 average pace. Original plan was to go longer, but decided to make it a little shorter to make sure I am taking care of my foot, which, by the way, is much much better. Yesterday I had hopped out of bed and walked around a bit before it dawned on me that I had not hobbled and wasn't in pain. Same thing this morning. Can still feel the plantar fascitis but it is about 80% gone. Googled how to tape for PF and taped my foot for my run this morning, slipped in heel gels, and had a great pain-free run. Was tempted to run some faster miles but resisted. Maybe a few sub-7's this weekend if foot is rocking steady. I don't want to do anything stupid before my first half-marathon in 12 days!!! Will probably continue to tape for runs as long as I still feel even a hint of heel/arch soreness. Still running on dirt only. Went to the zoo on Sunday with the kids and had a great time! I haven't been in years and I was just as fascinated as they were! |

| | 8:26 average pace. Found some running shoes on clearance at sports authority so I got them because they felt really good to walk around in. More of a stability shoe but my feet felt good in them and they were great on my run today. My foot likes the extra support I think. Day 2 of no NSAIDs and day two of taping for a run. Felt the same as yesterday. No hobbling this morning :) but still can feel it. I can poke the exact spot with my finger in the middle of my heel right before the arch starts. |

| | 8:37 average pace. About 5 miles into it the tape had formed a blister, ripped the blister open, and was pulling on raw skin so I had this hot spot that was really bothering me on the side of my toe. I figured it would just go numb after a while but it never did so I cut the run slightly short because it was really bothering me. I guess I'm a wimp today! |

| | 7:53 average pace. Felt great, the weather was beautiful, foot felt good, just had to cut loose and run a little brisker so I did. First mile was in 9:00 and last mile was in 7:03. Got the bandaids and tape right so no ripping skin today:) |

| | 8:43 average pace. Took it easy. My foot does not feel as good in the Mizunos as it does in my asics. I think I will avoid the Mizunos for a while. The road grader was out today stirring up all the rocks so I may run on asphalt tomorrow so I don't twist my ankle on freshly graded roads. Yeah it's the weekend and I'm off! |

| | 9:04 average pace. Slow and easy. The roads were squishy from the storm last night but that's okay with me. One week away from my first half-marathon! Only super duper easy miles from here out! |

| | 8:50 average pace. Nice and easy on the dirt roads. Taped my foot for the run but was doing okay without the tape so I will try not taping on Wednesday or Thursday for a shorter run and see how it feels. I slept in and ran in the heat but I am trying to acclimate myself because it is supposed to be a 100 degree day for the race Saturday which means during the morning of the race it will probably be in the high 80s to the low 90's toward the end. I'd better get used to it now! I am determined to eat right all week so I am starting the day off with a big bowl of raisin-walnut oatmeal and milk. I am even going to give up my daily scoop of ice cream and eat sugar-free jello and fruit instead! Just wait 'til after the race though then I WILL have my ice cream! |

| |
| | 8:44 average pace. I think I am going to go back to my good 'ol cheaper asics from now on. They feel good on my feet and they saw me through a lot of mileage with no injuries. Bye-bye expensive running shoes. I think I will wear these shoes for the race on Saturday. I'm going to get my pink asics out of retirement too. Taped my foot but it feels really good. I thought about not taping tomorrow but have decided that I will tape until the foot is 100% just to be sure. It really is doing great today. I have perfected my taping technique so I shouldn't tear any more skin :) |

Finally just quit running and went home so I could stop being paranoid. Everything is holding up well, foot is 90% recovered from the PF. No run tomorrow, and hopefully I am fresh legged and chipper Saturday morning. |

Run for your momma 1/2 marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:38:49, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1
That was tough. We arrived the night before with our whole family and friends to camp at the lake and drove the course. Right away I realized this was not a regular 'ol road race. About 2/3 of the race is on gravel, rocks, and dirt. And the hills, oh my. Up, down, up, down. Steep little monsters. Tons of them.
Areas of rather treacherous footing. After driving the course I realized I would not be getting the time I wanted, but I would at least race for place. So....fast forward to the morning of the race.
Woke up, had my 1/2 cup of coffee and a little gatorade, ate a banana, and off to the start. Taped my foot although the PF is mostly gone. Felt okay, jogged around a bit to warm up. The officials wished us luck, said a prayer, and we were off. This wasn't a big race at all--115 runners altogether including the relay runners.
1. 6:57 mostly flat on gravel but not too rocky. Feel good and comfortable
2. 7:17 still not too bad drink a little water at the aid station at the very end because wow it seems hot
3. 7:19 Stomach is a little queasy after that water but I'm pretty much okay
4. 7:36 Get onto some pavement in the town of Marion but a lot of uphill. The queasy is turning into nausea so I just dump some water over my head to keep cool at the aid station because I can't drink anything
5. 7:30 I am nauseated. not good.
6. 8:11 headwind. rocky gravel. hills. footing is not so good. so nauseated.
7. 7:49 on a deeply rutted road, if that is what you want to call it. trying to pick a smooth ride and keep my ankles out of the ruts. See my sweet husband cheering for me! I grab a cup at the aid station thinking it is water and dump it over my head to keep cool and sure enough it is warm, sticky, orange gatorade running down my hair and face. Nice. I catch a taste of it and almost start heaving. My husband has a lovely picture of me dumping the gatorade over my head.
8. 7:40 Starting to get back to the lake. I am hot and thirsty but too sick to my stomach to drink
9. 8:07 Hills hills hills. steep little monsters, 12% grade per my garmin data. up down up down up down I am crawling slower and slower up these things
10. 7:48 Struggling. Survival mode. Don't care about anything but finishing. I don't dare look at my watch because I'm afraid to know how slow I am going.
11. 7:53 Struggling. Nausea. up down up down
12. 8:23 My legs just die. done. We go down into these rocky alcoves in the lake and back up. Big rocks and the footing is treacherous. My foot is killing me. I get passed by 2nd place here and she takes the lead. I don't even put up a fight. She keeps looking behind her and I want to wave her on and tell her not to worry I am not going to catch her. up down up down
13. only. 81 per my garmin it measures this course as a bit short. time is 6:15, 7:42 pace. I try to look good crossing the finish line and promptly walk over to my husband, lean on him, and retch. Ugh.
Recovered a bit and went and talked to the girl who won. She was really sweet. Her feet were stinging from the rocks, she had worn racing flats not realizing what the terrain was going to be like. She beat me by 36 seconds. Third place was 10 minutes behind me.
Honestly I am pretty disappointed in myself with this race. I wish I knew why I was so nauseated. Not hydrating for the entire race was probably not helpful but I couldn't drink. And boy, do I need to learn to run hills. I stink at hills. Today my foot is much better but my quads are a mess. Stairs are rough on me today. On the upside, the flat, certified 1/2 marathon in Wichita next month on pavement is going to feel like a walk in the park compaired to this thing and boy do I plan to FLY and redeem myself. All the volunteers at the race were great and they had lots of aid stations for me to dump water over myself. I got a bottle filled with skittles and a pacifier for my age division award :). It is a race to benefit the mothers of young children so a cause I am all about! I like the blue shirt and the breakfast afterward was great. I couldn't eat much but my husband ate it! Had a blast camping all weekend with the family and friends. We tubed and boated on the water, grilled, ate smores, and sat around the campfire and talked. The kids had a BLAST!

9:38 average pace. My quads are still wrecked. Minced gingerly along for the first two miles while my quads shrieked and then they kinda warmed up and I shuffled four more miles. That is enough for today. Hopefully this soreness is gone by the end of the week. Did some stretching and hopefully a warm shower helps.

| |
| | 9:34 average pace. Still sorer than I have ever been in my life but much better than yesterday. Took a few miles before I warmed up and my quads didn't wince with every step. I will be running very slow all week--I'm an injury-prone runner and this is a vulnerable time period so I need to very careful. Foot is recovering nicely but not 100%--it would probably be 100% by now if I had not gone and raced on it. Next week I will really get back to normal. |
Blue/gold Asics Miles: 7.56 |

| |
| | 8:44 average pace. Wow, Eric was right, almost back to normal today. Foot feels great. I felt good on my run today, not good enough to run fast(I have no desired for that whatsoever yet), but good enough to feel....good! Took it easy, did my first experiment regarding nausea and running. Ate a banana and chugged gatorade immediately before starting to run, and chugged gatorade(2 different flavors) 3 times throughout the run. No nausea. So, at least I know it is not the gatorade or the banana in and of itself that causes nausea. More experiments to follow in the coming weeks. |

| | 8:40 average pace. Ran mostly easy but threw one 7:09 mile in to stretch my legs a bit. Felt pretty good but my legs don't have much zip in them. Foot is doing well but still not 100%. I suspect it will be at least a few weeks before it is completely healed. Still taping and now running in a brand new pair of asics gel equation 2--a shoe that has never did me any wrong. I will probably stick to these shoes from now on. |

8:10 average pace pushing Vanessa in the stroller. Was meeting the girls for breakfast in west Wichita to plan Melissa's baby shower and there is this great park out there with lots of bike paths so me and Vanessa went and ran there before breakfast. I meant to run slower but saw other runners and just had to speed up and pass them. Will I ever learn? Anyways the first few miles were slow but then I dropped a few sub 8's to make sure I was good and ahead of the other runners I passed. I am so ridiculous. Will do more later during Vanessa's nap(slowly, for real this time).
P.M. 4 loops easy at 8:41 pace. Tried to "Chi" run the last mile. Leaned the entire body ever so slightly forward, tried to let my feet land underneath me, tucked my tummy and gut in. Felt kinda strange but it was the fastest mile(8:10) with no increase in effort that I was aware of. Interesting.

| |
| | 8:31 average pace. Seemed awful stiff this morning, started out with a few rickety 9:30 miles and things finally warmed up. Towards the end foot started bugging a bit so I sped up since running faster makes the foot feel better--strange but I think I run with better form at higher speeds so it is easier on my foot. Anyways last couple of miles at 7:30 pace. Off day tomorrow and I am going to talk to my friend about a massage she is very good and may know some tricks to help my foot. Have 18 miles planned for Monday, which will be my longest run to date. This month depending on how the long runs go I may or may not shelve the October marathon. It just depends if this foot is not going to heal by October than I don't want to run a marathon on it and risk my first marathon ever being a painful blow-up. We will see my foot is not getting any worse but I would sure like to see some more marked improvement soon. |

| | 8:15 average pace. The plan was to go 18 today but I was watching a storm off to the west and sure enough it began to roar up and head my way. Abandoned ship toward the end and it was thundering and lightning pretty good as I ran a rather brisk last mile to get home. I don't mind getting rained on but I will not risk getting struck by lightning. Anyways, foot was holding up very well, the only part it got unhappy about was when I was on asphalt. Felt like it would have been fine for 6 more miles if the weather had not stopped me. I am encouraged today. Slow and rickety start as always. Splits 9:27/9:16/8:53/8:24/8:11/8:08/7:53/7:47/7:45/8:05/8:02/7:10, last little bit 6:29 pace. |

| | 8:33 average pace. Started out tired and unmotivated, began to feel good a while into the run, then tired and unmotivated at the end again. It was nice and cool today--67 degrees. A little drizzly and muddy but no lightning. |
| |
| | 8:38 average pace. Rainy and windy. At first the wind made the rain sting and it hurt but after a while I got used to it and it felt nice. Unmotivated at first but got to feeling good. Got nice and soaking wet and run through lots of puddles. It was nice to feel cool on a run for a change. Will probably go really easy tomorrow and then try for an 18 miler again on Friday. Saturday I have to work a night shift so I really don't want to combine that with a long run and end up injured. |
| |
| | 9:20 average pace. Took it very easy--strolled along and enjoyed the lovely cooler weather and the sunshine. Everything felt great, including my foot. Had a huge breakfast afterwards and feeling very relaxed. Needed to rest up as I am planning 18-20 tomorrow incorporating both half-marathon and marathon pace miles. It will be an experiment to see how the foot holds up and to practice re-fueling at higher intensity running and find out what my "nausea threshold" is and how to avoid it. |

| |
| | 8:05 average pace. Woke up at 6am to beat the heat, ate a piece of toast and jelly, drank some water, and hit the road. Noticed that they had graded the dirt roads so they were unfortunately rather rocky in places. Decided that I would run the whole thing on dirt anyway and just slow down on the rocky parts, because I don't want to aggravate my foot by running on asphalt when it is doing so well. Decided protecting my foot was more important than pace. Took Julie's advice and started slow, drifted into a better pace in the middle, and finished strong. Felt very strong at the end and could have easily kept going but no need to push it too hard. Foot was feeling good and wanted to end on a high note. Also squatted and peed behind a push for the very first time on a run and it was not nearly as scary as I thought it would be. I am worried about having to go pody during a marathon but if there is something to squat behind I suppose I will be okay. Overall a good run for me. | | 8:29 average pace. Feeling pretty good, finished the last mile at a pretty fast clip. Thinking about a 5k on September 5th. It is on a fairly flat certified course and I would like to break 20 on a course I know to be accurately measured--plus I need some redemption from my half-marathon. |

| | Bad bad day at work yesterday. First a drowned 3 year old followed by a futile resuscitation. Pumped that kid full of just about every drug in my arsenal on the way to the hospital. Less than 5 hours later took a pulseless, apneic 3 week old out of its screaming mother's arms and attempted yet another futile resuscitation. Neither kid made it. Two pediatric codes in one shift is rather unusual. Didn't sleep much last night, finally got up. Ankles need a break from camber on the dirt roads and my foot doesn't like asphalt so went to the rubberized track at the high school. Ended up doing a little speed just to break up the monotony. Ran 4.5 slow, then a 91 second 400, 400 recovery, 90 second 400, 400 recovery, 34 second 200, 200 recovery, must be tired now 36 second 200, jogged a few miles, 88 second 400, this one felt much easier than the other two, jogged a mile to cool down. Then slipped off my shoes and socks and did a quarter mile barefoot on the astroturf. Felt pretty good.

| | 8:22 average pace. Shouldn't have ran on the track yesterday my foot is newly angry. Back to the dirt roads today to tame the beast. Sigh. If I cannot handle 9 miles on the track then I don't see how 26.2 on asphalt is going to work. Off to work and then maybe 4 hours of sleep if I am lucky afterward since I have to get up at 4am tomorrow to make it to Hutchinson by 0630 for a clinical and then after that I will be exhausted so doubt I will be able to squeeze a run in tomorrow. |

Ate chili with cheese and crackers, drank a pina colada, and had ice cream. Got stuffed felt guilty. Did 15 minutes of abs and decided I was too tired to function. Good night everyone. |
| |
| | 8:17 average pace. Ran a half marathon on the dirt roads at home, incorporating as many hills as possible. Started out slow as always and warmed up into a better pace. Slept in and started late so it was getting might warm, especially toward the end. Foot felt good--of course, it always feels good unless I dare venture out onto anything besides dirt. |

| | 8:50 average pace. Took it easy. Woke up with a minor sore throat, same as yesterday, hope I am not getting a cold. It felt better after running. It was overcast and only 60 degrees when I started, and I could smell the rain and grass. It feels like fall and I got all nostalgic because this is when I started running last year. It was the end of August last year when I wheezed my way through that first 12 minute mile and thought it was going to kill me. Wow, a lot has changed since then. |
| |
| | 7:55 average pace. If I am going to race at my 1/2 and full marathon paces, I need to get acquainted and comfortable with them--so a bit of a tempo run today. Warmed up about 5.4 miles, then 2 miles at target 1/2 marathon pace(6:56, 6:58) before slowing down to 2 miles at target marathon pace(7:34,7:31) and then a little cooldown. The marathon pace miles felt like piece of cake after running the 1/2 marathon pace miles. The 1/2 marathon pace miles didn't feel too bad, but it will be tough to run 13.1 at that effort. All miles done on dirt roads as always to keep my foot happy. My foot is doing great. I am striving for full healing so have decided to continue to stay on dirt, stay off asphalt, skip the 5k on asphalt this weekend, and instead do a 20 miler on the dirt roads at home. Did 10 minutes of pilates with Denise Austin afterward. |

Ran errands with my husband and daughter(including officially registering for the 1/2 marathon Sept 20th), and then came home, ate lunch, put Vanessa down for her nap, and went for 5 more on a fully belly at 8:40 pace. I actually feel fine with a big burrito in my stomach while running. Enough for today, going for 20 miles starting at 6am tomorrow. |

| | 8:03 overall average pace. Woke up with some coughing with throat a little sore. Have been trying to fight the onset of this little cold all week. Will take some more emergen-C today. Anyways the plan was to get the second half of the run around target marathon pace but was feeling fatigued and legs were stiff so allowed myself to slow down a bit and just get the miles in. Glad to break 20 for the first time ever. Ate a piece of toast with peanut-butter immediately before bolting out the door and drank about 20 ounces of gatorade throughout the run. |
| | 8:56 average pace. Very easy today. I officially have a cold, so no desire to go any faster anyway. Had trouble with the same two dogs I have been having trouble with. They always come at me and I do the screaming rock-throwing bit, and their owner comes out and yells at them, but they don't listen. She never apologizes or puts them up though. I think tomorrow I will run by them and mace them. Anyways, happy holiday to those who are enjoying a day off. I am going to work because it is a holiday and people will drink and do stupid things today. |

Thunder and lightning. All morning. No way I could run safely outside before going to work, so I finally drove to Building 1 to run on the treadmill. I was pressed for time so decided to make it short but make it count.
Set the treadmill at 1% incline for the entire run
warmed up one mile at 8:34 pace
5 miles at 7:30 pace--target marathon pace maybe? Felt harder than it should have at first but then got easier as time went by. I am just not used to nor do I like running on the treadmill
1 mile at 6:40 pace--felt hard at first but was getting into a groove at the end. checked my heart rate at the end--178. Geez.
.5 mile cooldown.
I really hate the treadmill. To me it is mentally defeating and I have a hard time getting into the groove.
Stretched a little, drove to post 11, showered, and got on the truck. Now I'm at work and it's still raining--haven't heard much thunder though. |

| | 8:57 average pace. It rained and rained all night, and was still raining this morning. I waited a little while, but did not hear any thunder or see any lightning so finally I prepared for the soaking and out I went. Got drenched for the the first 4 miles and then it suddenly stopped. Altogether a pretty pleasant run! Had walnut raisin oatmeal for breakfast and it is soooo good! |

| | 8:18 average pace. Ran 5.82 easy, then 2 loops at fast but comfortable pace, so comfortably hard(7:26/7:18). ran 1 more easy than 1 more comfortably hard(7:09), then cooled down a little under a mile. Hopefully my half-marathon pace is a little better than that. I am not ready for a sub 1:30 half. I am going to shoot for 1:32-1:33 half on the 20th. |

ok fixing this because I looked at my garmin info wrong a.m. 8.18 at 8:36 average pace. All easy except for a .23 up the road by my house in 81 seconds(5:52 pace) to stretch my legs out. Felt very good. Figured I'd get extra miles in today but split it into two runs since I am trying to ward off fatigue. About 8 more later this afternoon or evening is the plan. p.m. 7:56 average pace. Feeling good. Did .29 in 102 seconds for 5:52 pace--this felt very good, fast but in control. Legs felt strong and breathing didn't get away from me. Splitting into two runs was definitely a kinder, gentler way to get some miles in. Off to rest up the rest of the weekend and run some easy mileage next week in preparation for my half marathon. Probably won't really taper but will take the last few days before easy with low miles.

| | 8:42 average pace. Really slow start. My legs, particularly my calves, were burning and sore which was weird since I didn't run yesterday. It felt like major lactic acid build-up. It took almost 4 miles before the feeling dissipated and my legs loosened up and the rest of the run was normal. Strange. I want fresh legs for Sunday so I may back off mileage starting tomorrow. Maybe only 8 a day? Friday I have an early clinical so that will be a day off, and then Saturday I will just run a few very slow to knock of cobwebs, and hope this leaves me feeling fresh and loose Sunday morning. My plan is to eat very well this week and stay well hydrated, and get up early enough Sunday to eat a full breakfast(not huge, but a substantial breakfast). This way if I encounter nausea issues again hopefully I have enough fluids and gas in the tank that not ingesting anything during the race doesn't affect me. |

| |
| | 9:29 average pace. Very slow. Left hip/buttock feels very tight again today. I am worried about it. It is not really pain, just tightness. I think it is my piriformis but there is no sciatic nerve involvement because the pain does not radiate and it is not form-altering. I think it is a result of using this hip to compensate for the plantar fascitis in my r hip. Concentrated on running with good form and being very very careful not to favor anything. I noticed yesterday when I had to do a deep squat and deadlift a patient on our cot up stairs I use my butt to lift and I totally felt it in that hip. The discomfort is definitely muscular in origin. The hip never really loosened up while running. Will be taking it super-easy all this week until Sunday's and work on stretching this hip out and resting it. I am NOT interested in another injury. |
Blue/gold Asics Miles: 6.82 |
|
| |
| | 8:59 average pace. Glute is better today. The pain has migrated, seems more superficial and it hurts to put direct pressure on it--so can't really sit on the toilet comfortably. Also seems to be a little bruising there. I don't know when it happened but it appears I bumped my glute on something and this is really the cause of all this pain. Run felt good today. I could feel the area of pain sort of bouncing when I ran but running did not exacerbate it. Nor does walking or standing. Does not hurt to stretch it out, actually feels good. Lifting does hurt it. I did not like lifting patients at work yesterday. It got to hurting pretty good at work last night and I was dismayed and pretty sure I wouldn't be running on Sunday so I tried to cure it with a peanut butter patty blizzard from Dairy Queen. Well it must've done the trick because I feel a lot better about things today. Ran about 300 meters at 6:52 pace to see if the faster pace was more painful. It did not seem to be. My form does not seem altered. I have determined that at the very least I will jog the half-marathon on Sunday at my easy pace. If my glute lets me I will run it harder. If my glute lets me and the stars align I will race it. Will just have to see how things are feeling. |
Blue/gold Asics Miles: 8.00 |
|
| |
| | 8:34 average pace. Glute feels seriously better. Not perfect, about 90%--almost perfect! The big mileage back off is working, or maybe it was the blizzard. Legs are starting to get that fresh feeling. My first mile was under 9 minutes and that never happens. I am always a rickety starter and take a long time to warm up. Foot is doing pretty good. So, if the glute feels okay, and the foot doesn't protest the hard surface, there is indeed hope for a decent run on Sunday. Have to work late, then get up early and make the long drive to Hutchinson for a clinical, so no run tomorrow. A little dust-off-the-cobwebs jog on Saturday. Then the big 1/2. This should be a pretty good-sized one I will be lucky to place in my age group. Heck I don't care I just want to run a decent time and not suffer the misery of my last 1/2. |
Blue/gold Asics Miles: 6.31 |

| |
| | worked late. got up early. drove to Hutchinson, on my feet all day at a clinical did very little sitting down, only a few minutes at the most. I am home now, and exhausted, and my foot didn't like all the standing. My glute feels fine though. So, no run today, better to rest. I will run a few miles with some strides tomorrow and then race day Sunday! I keep getting weird tingly feelings in all my muscles and sometimes it feels like I could crawl up the wall. Is this what it is like to be "tapered?" I have never felt like this before. It feels sort of like I need to sprint madly or something might explode. |
| |
| | 4 at 8:51 pace, with four bursts of race pace. Foot feels good. Glute feels good. I feel nervous which is silly. Going to hydrate well today and go to be as early as possible. The plan is to relax and go out fairly conservatively and allow my body to warm up for the first few miles, and then put the pedal to the medal and see how long I can hang on. If I have enough steam to really push the last 5k that would be great. Good luck to all racers today!!! |

Wichita half marathon 2009 (13.1 Miles) 01:35:15, Place overall: 8, Place in age division: 1 | | An okay time for an okay performance. Wasn't feeling it today. I just never found that desire to really push into the super pain zone. I tried to keep a steady pace--felt okay until mile 10 and then my legs just seemed to lose strength and it was hard to keep rocking steady. I am a bit disappointed in my time, but think this is an honest assessment of my fitness so now I know where I am fitness-wise, and not just where I WISH I was. It will come with time. The course was basically flat, a few ups and downs getting down by the river and then back up on the road here and there, but mostly flat. Hydrated well the last few days, got up early enough to eat toast and a banana, and never got anything during the aid stations at the race--a habit I'd better break for the marathon in 4 weeks. :Left glute and right foot were okay during the race, but are killing me now! No crazy time goals for the marathon, but hope I don't fall apart and am able to BQ. Warmed up 1.25 easy with a few strides. 1--6:58--trying to take it easy, a whole mass of jackrabbits takes off in front of me 2--7:10--still taking it easy 3--7:06--trying to speed up a bit but it really isn't happening, pass a few of the jackrabbits 4--7:08--this speed is just the way it is I guess 5--7:12--See my husband and daughter! I wave! 6.--7:09--just cruising along 7--7:21--Don't know what happened here. I see a few gals in sight 8--7:07--heading back up where the course goes over itself, and are passing a bunch of runners coming the other direction 9--7:12--someone tells me I am 9th woman 10--7:13--pass one of the girls, she looks awfully tired. this should put me in 8th 11--7:20--oh dear. getting tired. left leg feels weird. no pain or anything but it just doesn't have much power, getting all the stride power from my right leg now. this is probably a manifestation of whatever has been going on with my left hip/butt. A 40ish lady comes blowing by me and man she is cooking. She just keeps going full speed ahead. Man she looks strong. Is that you Julie?:) She quickly opens up a huge gap and is gone. I am closing in on another girl right now 12--7:28--still trying to catch that girl. am using shorter strides trying to work with this weird dead left leg 13--7:24--I pass her. somehow. Try to surge into some speed but it's not happening. It's just not happening Don't know about the last little bit. I stopped my watch late, after I had walked out of the finish chute. It shows 13.21 miles. This is a certified course so I didn't get my tangents quite right.
Am ashamed to admit I probably could have pushed harder as my breathing never got really hard during the race. I need to get back to the strength drills on my legs, I should have never let myself quit doing those. Well, I'm going to go get in the shower now and do some homework while Vanessa naps.

| | 9:03 average pace. Still sore and running slow, but ran the last mile in 7:25. Things get busy now the rest of this week. Early morning meeting and long shift at work, followed by 4 or 5 hours of sleep than a clincal all day Friday, then flag football Saturday morning in the team "The Defibrillators" in the Kansas Emergency service games. That should be fun! Probably won't make the 20 miler until Sunday morning before church. |

8:36 average pace. Got home at midnight, crashed by 1am, got up at 6, got dressed, ran what little mileage I could squeeze in, came home, showered, drove to Derby, picked up the ambulance, drove to the zoo in wichita for a four hour mandatory meeting, finished the meeting, put my unit in service, immediately picked up a call, and now I am boring you with the details of my busy day so far. Work until 1130 tonight, up at 430 am tomorrow to drive to Hutchinson for my clinical. Will have to run tomorrow evening. Busy busy week. Really wanted to get in more mileage this week in preparation for the marathon in 3 1/2 weeks, but it's not going to happen. Life happened instead. That 's okay still planning on one last 20-miler Sunday if I am not too sore from 4 flag football games Saturday. If I am then I will do the 20-miler Monday morning. Either way I am not going to skip this final 20-miler, I feel like I need it to complete my marathon training goal. Not like I am looking for a super fast marathon time--I'm just not trained for that, but I would like to do reasonably well and not completely crash in my first marathon. BQ should be very doable. Should be. Sometimes things go wrong, I am aware of that. |

| | 7:37 average pace. 4 hours of sleep, full stomach. Literally got up from the supper table and went and squeezed a run in. Not much time. Wanted to spend time with my family. Flag football tomorrow! I got Vanessa a little cheerleading outfit and she is going to be our cheerleader. I have been teaching her to yell "Go defibrillators!" Our team is the only EMS team we are playing a bunch of fire departments. UNDERDOGS. Everyone have a wonderful weekend. I will be doing sprints on the football field tomorrow!!! Does that count as speedwork? :) |
Blue/gold Asics Miles: 8.00 |
|
| |
| | Alright this is being conservative, since it does not count all the sprinting and running I did in the FOUR back to back flag football games today. My husband, oldest son Brandon, and myself competed on the flag football team today representing Sedgwick County EMS in the Kansas Emergency Service games. Well the track and field was going on next door and I got suckered in to the 1600 meter, and then got suckered into the 400 meter. I figured what the hey, I won't go all out and hurt myself but I can get some mileage in and call it speedwork. So, immediately after flag football game number two I jogged a mile to warm up, then ran the 400 in 73 seconds, and got a first place medal because I was the only female--I chicked two of the guys who died in the last 100 meters. Cooled down half a mile. Then at halftime of flag football game number 4 I went over and ran the 1600 with no warm up in knee length basketball shorts and my big white cotton t-shirt and ran it in 6:18, once again garnering a medal because I was the only female. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the 6:18 mile was, I was talking in full sentences the whole time to the guy right behind me and the event director guy who jumped in a few laps because he was tired of standing around. He called himself the rabbit and broke wind for me on the back curve for laps 2 and 3. Immediately jogged off the track and back to the field for the second half. Anyways totally tired did a LOT of running playing flag football but it was fun--we didn't win anything but we tried and scored some touchdowns here and there. We were the only EMS team all the rest were fire departments and they were all organized and had plays and stuff. Came home and ran a 4-mile shakeout run--my husband ran the first mile of this with me! Wow he hasn't run in a long long time. I dressed Vanessa up as a cheerleader and she cheered for us until my mom came and got her after the second game to bring her to lunch and put her down for a nap. I am sunburned like a lobster and a little sore. My 20-miler has been pushed to Monday because I really just want to have a rest day, go to church, and hang out with my family tomorrow. This has just been a crazy week. |

|
| | 9:19 average pace. Still quite sore today and didn't think it was a good idea to go 20. I thought I would recover quicker. Guess not. My hamstrings are still screaming. Okay, 20 days away from the marathon and I am starting to wonder if it is getting too close to do a 20-miler? Although I would feel undertrained without one more really long run. I don't know what to do. |

| | 8:56 average pace. Still slow but the soreness is finally starting to dissipate. Who knew flag football would be such an onslaught. Sad day yesterday, one of our Sheriff deputy's was shot in the back--completely just ambushed by a guy who called to make a report about a car that got broken into, anyways he died, and then after a long manhunt and standoff the shooter exchanged fire with officers and was also killed. The deputy was only 26 years old and has a wife and 2 year old child. He was brand new. I did not know him personally but think I should go pay my respects at his funeral. So, extra prayers today for our public service personnel. |

Pretty tired, did not make it home until 2am last night and couldn't sleep well and then Vanessa was having trouble last night and was permanently up at 6:45am. Hopefully I get off work in time tonight and get some more sleep before attempting one last 20. |

| | 8:42 average pace. Took it nice and easy and comforable for the whole run. Done. Yeah!!!! I made the deal with myself that if I finished this run and wasn't limping, I would go register for the marathon. So I finished without a limp, and now it is official--I have registered for the wichita marathon on October 18th and I have a bib! Left hip is bothering me but nothing a taper won't take care of right? I am going to taper for this in the hopes that my nagging aches and pains go away. Injury assessment time: During the run my right foot(plantar fascitis) was fine, I can tape it and forget it. Left hip was bothering me, not enough to alter form, but it bothered me until about mile 10 when it suddenly stopped. A little bit of ITB pain to the l knee for several miles which also resolved. Suddenly felt great at mile 18(huh?) and had a burst of energy. Last two miles were the best! Finished feeling good. Walked into the house without limping. Hip didn't really start bugging until I had been sitting in the car for a while. Fuel: got up, ate a piece of peanut butter toast, dressed and taped, and out the door I was. Downed some gatorade 4 or 5 times starting at mile 4. One quick pody squat. Never felt like I was crashing or hitting a wall. Hopefully I feel that way at mile 25 in the marathon. Alrighty then. Good like to everybody at their marathons this weekend! I know there are a lot of bloggers headed to St. George and I will be eagerly awaiting race reports tomorrow!!! |

| | 6 super easy at 9:18 pace. I wasn't sure if running the day after a long run was a good idea, but I needed a fix of peace and quiet so out the door I went. My legs are not sore at all and I felt fine. Surprising, but rather nice. I can't wait for some St. George race reports to start coming in so I can read them! |

| | AHHHHHHHHH! So I was standing around at a birthday party yesterday afternoon when I got a little ache in the heel of my other foot, so I just ignored it and went on my way but by last night it became quite apparent to me that I am developing plantar fascitis in my other foot! PLANTAR FASCITIS IN BOTH FEET! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Can I run a marathon with both feet taped? Does that make me even? Well I guess my gait won't be uneven I will have a double-hobble....Iced it last night and started on some motrin, maybe, just maybe, I have caught it early enough I can halt the progress. ...Will see how the run goes tomorrow. |
| |
| | 8:28 average pace. Taped both feet and ran in new shoes--the same kind I always get except they are gel equation 3 instead of 2 because nobody has the 2 anymore. They feel the same so I should be okay. Had a hard time getting the coordination to tape the other foot. Felt weird twinges in my left ankle. Left hip is doing well. Right foot is the same as always and left foot is trying to get full-blown plantar fascitis and I am trying to stop it. I don't know if this is mostly psychological or if my body really is falling apart now that I have paid my non-refundable entry fee. Am visiting the chiropractor today. Aside from new heights of injury paranoia, the run felt good and went well. My energy levels are good. |
| |
| | 7:57 average pace. Pressed for time today. Woke up this morning and my daughter had a red rash all over her face and trunk and her poor face was swollen and puffy. I didn't like the look of that and called the doctor and begged to get her squeezed in. Gave her benadryl and motrin while I waited and it didn't seem to help the rash much although she was acting fine--ate a big breakfast and played like normal--didn't appear to be in any distress. Well turns out she has strep throat, which is very unusual for a child her age but with all her siblings at home not unheard of. Anyways got home from the doctor and got her settled in. Had a little time to run--pushed the last mile a little so I could beat the 8:00 girl when I glanced and saw I was close. Injury assessment: left foot ghost plantar fascitis is gone. hope it stays gone. right foot plantar fascitis is there and holding steady as always. Left hip is bugging a little but not bad. I have another chiropractor appointment tomorrow to work on that hip. He says my SI joint is inflamed and I have some sciatica but sees no reason for me to stop running. At least I ran with only one foot taped today. |
| |
| | 9:07 average pace. Took it very easy. Quite chilly this morning. Injury assessment: left foot ghost plantar fascitis still gone. right foot maintaining. left hip bugging a bit today. Maybe the chiropractor can help
Vanessa is doing better with her scarlet fever, but the rash has her wanting to scratch herself a lot.

| | 8:08 average pace. What a great day! Hopped out of bed and not a creak from my right foot(nor my left). Had to run brisk to squeeze between thunderstorms. Ran mile 7 in 7:22 and mile 8 in 7:00 to stretch the legs a little. Injury assessment: left foot--fine, nothing wrong. right foot-just a hint of PF, the best it has been in months. Left hip--just a tad achey while sitting down now--no problems during the run. I have always been skeptical of chiropractors but after yesterday's appointment and feeling so good today I am starting to wonder... |
| |
| | 8:34 average pace. Exhausted. Got home late, only 4 hours of sleep, up very early and off to Hutchinson for a clinical. On my feet all day. Came home and went for a run. It was deliciously cold but pretty soon the I-am-too-tired-already-paid-my-nonrefundable-entry-fee-for-marathon-only-9-days-away-super-injury-paranoia kicked in. I'm pretty sure everything was falling apart. Achilles, plantar fascia, knees, hips, there is something wrong with everything. Too psychologically anxiety provoking so I abandoned ship and came home to lay around with the kids. Injury assessment: too numerous to count. Good night everybody I need some sleep.

| |
| | a.m. Fall festival in Rose Hill today. Nick ran the mile and I ran the mile with Vanessa in the stroller. Warmed up about a quarter mile and then a brisk 6:40ish mile. Temps in the 30's today it is COLD. Nick did really good- the fourth graders got a trophy for having the most participants and Nick got a medal! I opted out of the 5k because the temptation to run hard and compete would have been too much and it is too close to the marathon. I just wanted to have fun. Afterward we watched the parade(a LONG parade and they threw a LOT of candy and now I have to sneak around and throw most of it in the dumpster when the kids aren't looking--I do it every Halloween too)
p.m. 6.83, 8:09 average pace. Felt great--I really do like running in the cold weather. Long sleeves, pants, earwarmers and gloves. If it is this cold for the marathon that is okay with me.

| | I feel terrible. Runny nose, exhausted. David is having problems with his back and couldn't get off the couch all weekend. Between schoolwork, chasing children, trying to clean the house, work, and going to visit relatives from out of town I am about to drop. After a whopping 5 hours of fitful sleep I got the kids off to school, took my husband to the doctor, picked my cousin and his wife up for brunch and spent time with them, then dropped them off and settled in my daughter before getting dressed and dragging to work. Any point in squeezing a run in when I am exhausted and sick and 6 days away from a marathon? Nah. Off to work and hope I don't collapse. |
| |
| | 8:18 average pace early in the morning this am. felt pretty good, mostly just lots of little phantom pains but I survived. Runny nose is gone. Aside from being tired, I actually feel okay. Will be aiming for lots of sleep tonight and just however many slow miles tomorrow feels nice. |
|
| | 8:38 average pace. Felt pretty good, aside from all the phantom twinges and tweaks I am experiencing 24-7. Hip and foot are doing well. So, on Sunday it is supposed to start at 35 degrees and end up in the 60's. What DO you wear? Shorts and a parka? |

| | 8:17 average pace. Dress rehearsal day. What a get-up. Black shorts, aqua tank top, arm warmers made by cutting the feet out of my husband's old issue green army socks, pink headband-earwarmer thing, and pink gloves. It is the ultimate mismatch but everything is comfortable and non-chafing and the arm warmers worked fantastic-thanks for the idea Allie! Warmed up a few miles than practiced running 8:00 pace since this is target pace for the first portion of the race. Hit 3 miles right on the nose--8:01,8:02,7:59. It felt easy so I guess that is good. I am going to think of the race as 4 5-mile segments followed by a 10k race. So 3 5 mile runs and then a 5 mile warm-up for the 10k race. Hip and foot held up well. Hope they continue to hold up well through 26.2 miles. I suspect that hard asphalt will have my foot angry by the end but hopefully it is tolerable. |

The kids don't have school today so we are all hanging out and being bums! Working on making sure I am well hydrated! Hip and foot aren't really complaining at all. Awesome. Will do a few slow miles tomorrow to knock off the cobwebs and then off to bed early before the BIG DAY. |
| |
| | 8:52 average pace. Definitely feeling pretty nervous about tomorrow. Will try and take it easy and nap today. foot and hip are as good as they get--not perfect, but calmed down to a very dull ache which is better than it has been in months. |

| Race: |
Wichita marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:33:46, Place overall: 55, Place in age division: 3 | | So there it is! Objectives were to finish and qualify for Boston and have a good time--all objectives met! I am glad it is over. I am glad I took the last two weeks easy and let my hip and foot heal a bit--they held up pretty well. On to the race--I took Sasha's advice and decided to run 8:00 miles until mile 20 and then see from there. Not so fast finish, but I will learn to do better in the last 10K. This course is NOT flat. Lots of rolling. One nasty hill right at the 22 mile mark, and then a lonely treck through Linwood park wondering where everyone is and if it will be over--but I am getting ahead of myself. It was so windy today--could have done without that but I didn't let it get to me--this is Kansas and the wind was to be expected--could've been worse. So here is the play by play:
Morning: up at 5:45, half a cup of coffe, one piece of toast with peanut butter, one banana, gatorade, got there an hour early, hung out with my husband's cousin Jenny who ran her first half marathon today. Line up and at 8:00 am the whistle blew and we were off. 1. 8:23--caught in the crowd, not up to speed yet. 2. 7:48--break free of the crowd, trying to settle into 8:00 pace 3. 8:02--that's better 4. 8:09--just breezing along comfortable, actually enjoying myself and feeling happy to be running and happy to be healthy 5. 7:59--all warmed up. Ran by a dumpster pulled up to someone's curb in the neighborhood and neatly deposited my earband, gloves, and arm warmers. Slowed down to a walk briefly so I could gulp gatorade 6. 8:04--get to chatting with two guys. One hasn't run a marathon in 20 years and is going for a 3:45. The other guy ran the Kansas City marathon yesterday--he is running in all 50 states and didn't realize it was Kansas City, MO, so he drove down here to run his Kansas marathon today. crazy! 7. 8:08--Still chatting, get some gatorade
8. 7:50--time to break away because I am slowing down too much 9. 7:48--see my husband, he gives me my sunglasses and I tell him I am having a great time--I am! drink more gatorade
10. 7:55 11. 7:48 drink gatorade 12. 7:40--thinking I will hit the half right on schedule 13. 7:48-gatorade, I am just drinking it every 2 miles at every aid station
14. 7:43--pass through the half in 1:44 and some change, see my mother and grandfather and yell at them that I feel great 15. 8:06--yucky headwind, gatorade
16. 7:49--golly it is windy, I need to stop thinking about it 17. 7:51--feeling okay, make sure I drink lots of gatorade 18. 8:25--left quad is getting tight and locking up. that's not good 19. 8:24--the downhill slide begins, now I notice that my legs hurt, gatorade
20. 8:04--I can't believe that I haven't used the restroom yet. I don't think I am going to need to 21. 8:18--right quad is locking up. Nice. now I am symmetrical-gatorade 22. 8:37--hill. mean ol'hill. just what my locked up legs needed 23. 8:39--my husband! Yeah! I tell him that I am hurting and I can't wait to see him at the finish line! 24. 8:42. Lonely mile. No spectators through here. Somewhere in here I pass a few people which surprises me because I feel like I am barely moving. Legs are soooo locked up. I feel all the energy draining out of me. Where is that aid station? 25. 8:48 my legs are concrete pillars, don't get much at the aid station because I can't slow down or I will probably never recover.
26. 8:31 a little surge because I am almost done and I have been checking my watch to make sure I at least make Boston! last .2 I don't know because I forgot to stop my watch. The last two blocks are on cobblestones so I am smiling and trying not to fall on my face at the same time! I cross the line and throw my hands up in the here because it is DONE! A year ago I would have laughed at you if you said I would run a marathon and qualify for Boston. So glad I am healthy and a runner and not a smoker. So glad to have a marathon under my belt. This is a happy day, it is really a personal triumph of sorts. I have a past full of bad lifestyle decisions and choices. Quitting smoking last year was the last vice to go, and today is a symbol of victory over all those bad dark things in years past. I really am free. Thanks be to God. Next: run some more and learn to run a marathon FASTER!

| | Warning: Don't read this if you are sensitive to grossness Oh my poor toe. It was so swollen last night. I already had a black toenail and then some tissue or something had grown under it so I had a really thick toenail and then last night it had become a double black toenail and the tip of my toe was huge and the pressure was incredible and it hurt. I needed some serious pressure release because it was hurting. David caught me trying to rip the toenail off and intervened. After consulting with my mother he used a drillbit and hand drilled a hole in my nail until the blood and fluid started coming out. Then I squeezed a whole bunch out. So gross but my toe is normal size and I feel sooo much better. Other than than, I actually feel pretty good today. I am not nearly sore as I imagined I would be. Stairs are slightly problematic but I can walk around and get in and out of the car just fine. My appetite returned with a vengeance yesterday evening and I ate A LOT. It was absolutely delicious and against all the rules--we're talking a hamburger(a big one with cheese and all the fixings, a real one, not a fast food one), fries, chocolate, and then later on popcorn and a giant diet coke. I split the snickers bar in my goodie bag with the kids, but I ate the little bagel with cream cheese myself. It was great. I could not eat like this every day but yesterday it was GOOD.

| | The hot water heater broke. So me and David rode bikes 9 miles to Lowes and back to get the part with Vanessa in the bike trailer. David pulled Vanessa most of the time, I pulled her the last 3 miles. The whole thing took almost 2 hours because we had to make a lot of pit stops--David's bike kept messing up and he kept stopping and fixing it(he brought tools). Lowes didn't have the part but it was a nice ride anyway. When we got back I rode 5 more. It felt good to move my legs and work out a little bit. I will probably do some slow running tomorrow but I want to make sure everything is okay first so I don't hurt myself. Going to the doctor today because I think my toe may be infected. Still quite sore in the quads but I feel rested and energetic. |
| |
| | Muscle soreness is much improved today. Rode 6.25 on the bicycle, then ran, er, shuffled 3.29. The first mile was terribly jerky and awkward, like my body forgot how to run. Splits 9:38, 9:17, 9:34, .29 at 9:13 pace. Then I walked for half a mile to cool down. Left hamstring is super tight, came home and stretched it out really good. I am now on antibiotics for my toe and am waiting for an appointment with the podiatrist to remove the nail and all the hypertrophic tissue--probably will be a few months. Back to the grind today. A long day at work and then an early a.m. clinical tomorrow morning. Poor Vanessa is sick again and having breathing problems. We were up a few times last night for breathing treatments. I hate it when she has a hard time breathing. I am afraid to sleep because I feel like I need to watch her constantly. |

| | 9:20 average pace. Neither my legs nor I had any inclination to go any faster. It did feel good to get out and ran though. Vanessa had a good night--it was good to be home. We set the alarm and checked on her every 3 hours and she did great all night. |

| | 8:57 average pace. Beautiful morning. 40ish degrees, white sparkly frost on the ground, multicolored trees--just gorgeous. I know I've already said this but I really do love autumn running! Was going to do my out-and-back course twice for 11ish miles but second time out my right knee felt achey so I turned around early and cruised back, stopped at 10 miles and walked a little while. It feels fine now, I think I just need to keep taking it really easy as I am probably not completely recovered from the marathon. My plan from now until the end of the year is just lots and lots of easy easy miles and nothing else, except if I throw a race or two in there somewhere. |

| | 8:45 average pace. Very windy today. Ran about half the run on asphalt instead of dirt roads because my foot does not hurt anymore. Everything seemed to be fine. I am not quite ready to announce that the PF is cured but only the slightest bit of pain is there from time to time. |

| | 8:09 average pace. Pressed for time today and needed to brisk up the pace a bit to get a decent amount of miles in. Slept in(needed it), rushed around to make it to two parent-teacher conferences, ran in the mud in the pouring rain, then hurried to shower, hop in the car, and go to work. |

| | 8:15 average pace. Tried running this afternoon with an mp3 player and it was actually pretty fun. It did seem to make the run go faster. I just put it on mix not knowing what all was on it and ended up listening to an interesting mix of guns'n'roses, linkin park, queen, and smashing pumpkins. Worked well for running music. Felt warm and energetic and ran the last .2 mile stretch at 5:22 pace. Now off to finish Halloween costumes. Ian is a ghost, Nick is a storm trooper, and Vanessa is going to be Punky Brewster. The boys have no idea who that is but it will be a fun and easy costume to make. |

8:25 average pace. did one little fast .3 at 6:07 pace. Still not ready to run fast for a prolonged period of time. What's up with the weight gain??? It's been going up since the marathon and I swear I haven't started to eat bad all of the sudden or anything. Alright, no sweets and lots of water and hopefully it goes away. I am thinking it is water weight.

8.08@8:14 average pace, with the last .3 at 6:48 pace. Felt good. Wow I have felt really great on all my runs this week--hope it lasts! I have a bike ride, lunch, and movie with my husband to celebrate my birthday a few days early since I will be gone all weekend on clinicals and then have to work all next week. I'm also going to run this evening with my cousin-in-law Jenny so this is just a triple-workout kind of day. So, a little birthday reflection here, 30 IS the new 20, my 30th year was outstanding! On to 31 and feeling great about it!
noon: 9.5 mile bike ride, some of it vigorous, with my husband. 10 minutes abs with Denise Austin evening: 5.65 very easy with Jenny. A couple miles in the 9s, a couple in the 11s, one in the 13s because we walked a little bit. She is doing really good!

| | 8:15 average pace. Enjoyed it. Husband took me out to breakfast and then we had to bring Vanessa to the doctor because she had the same rash she had when she had strep, and, as I suspected, she has strep again. I am worried because it recurred so soon. Immunosuppression from the steroids she had with her breathing issues maybe? I dunno--nobody else in the family is sick and she doesn't go to daycare so I don't know where she could've got it. |

Stretched things out and will keep myself around 9ish miles for the rest of the week--should take care of the problem. On the upside, my left hip is about cured and the PF in my right food is just a wisp. It's still there but is so faint I don't think about it. One more day of work and off for the weekend! | | 8:59 average pace. Was actually mostly slower, in the 9+ miles. Don't like running that slow, it makes the run really long but I am trying to take care of my knee. Off to run errands and catch up on housework and pay bills....I am not loving the bills.

| | 7:52 average pace. My knee has felt perfect ever since running fast on it yesterday,so I scrapped the slow running plans and went for it. I haven't run fast in a long time. I need to get comfortable with sub-7 pace, know what it feels like, not be afraid of it, learn to sustain it. Ran into the Paul's Valley edition to the north which has a nice loop which is one mile and some change. After two miles including one loop, I started my tempo. The goal was to run a pace which makes my breathing energetic and makes me work and gets me outside the comfort zone, but is not aerobic distress leg-burning uncomfortable like a 5k. The loop is fairly flat with a hill on the backstretch. Did a 180 after the first loop at tempo and ran the other two loops in the other direction. Splits were 7:06, 6:52, 6:52, .51 in 3:24(6:40 pace), so a grand total of 3.51 in 24:16, 6:54 pace. Good enough. Felt pretty good, don't know why my first mile was lacking--It just take me a bit to get into a groove. Jogged back down to my dirt roads for a cooldown, but toward the end felt the itch again so picked it up to 6:25 pace for .41, then jogged to the neighbor's mailbox and back to make it an even 10. Knee feels fine. Happy with the workout today. |

My goal Saturday is to run 10 consecutive sub-7 minute miles. I really hope I can do it because I would like tangible proof that all this mileage really is doing something with my fitness. I seem to quickly run out of stamina over distances longer than 10k so a fast 10 miles would be a good progression. |

Wichita Turkey Trot (10 Miles) 01:10:26, Place overall: 7, Place in age division: 1 | | Disappointed. A little. Not what I wanted, but close. I am making progress, it is just agonizingly slow progress, but progress nonetheless. Fitness check reveals that aerobically I am doing pretty good but leg strength/leg fatigue is an issue. I think as my body gets more used to 60+ weeks and I get regular sub-7 paced tempos in this will improve. Although I am not going to do formal speedwork, I think occasional 1/2 mile bursts of sub-6 pace each week along with a once-weekly sub-7 tempo or short race will also help drive my "cruising" speed from 7:00 to somewhere sub-7. Ate a banana for breakfast, warmed up 1 mile slow and lined up. It was cold but not to0 cold so I ditched my sweatshirt, hat, and gloves 2 minutes before the race started and ran in shorts and a singlet. Splits are per garmin, I really need to learn to hit my lap button and go by mile markers but I am paranoid this will break my concentration. Per garmin I ran 10.08 and I believe this since the course was out and back on a bike path so you couldn't properly run tangents without plowing into someone for miles 3-7. The course is mostly flat with a handful of steep but very short rollers. I ran the first 5 miles more or less with two other gals, Tara and Margie. We talked a bit and they were super nice. I have met Margie before. At the turn around Tara took off and I tried to go with her but she dropped me. I dropped Margie in here too, but she finished only a minute behind me, and I finished a minute behind Tara. I did beat Lacy today by about a minute and I have never beat Lacy. She finished her 1/2 marathon 3 minutes faster than me and the marathon 14 minutes faster. I am officially a chase-pack runner locally. Maybe by next year I can work my way into the lead pack. :) Splits 6:50, 6:57, 6:58, 6:56, 6:59, 7:04(I could just kick myself),7:05(grrrrr), 7:06(noooo), 7:08(hang my head), 6:56(finish decent please) , .08 in 22 seconds if the garmin is to be believed. Take it or leave it I did kick pretty hard in the end and get a little puke-zoney so that is the only reason I am including this last little snippet in my report. Cooled down 1/2 mile, took my mom out to lunch for her birthday, went home, and then ran a 6.85 mile recovery run at 9:01 pace to break in my new Nikes and get 60 for the week. I got the shoes on sale and they actually feel really good on my feet.

| | 7:57 average pace. Ahh my legs are back. Felt zippy today, even in the blustery wind. Stretched my legs out at 6:50 pace for the last 1/2 mile. Felt great. A mysterious Golden Retriever showed up about a mile into my run and ran next to me the entire rest of the run. He seemed like a super cool dog, although he did cut in front of me a handful of times and almost trip me. I checked his collar when we got back to my house and there was no tag. I hope he finds his way home and is not lost. I also sorta hope he runs with me tomorrow-the company was nice and the other neighboring dogs were more concerned with him and left me alone while I was running. Nice! |

| | 8:11 average pace but OH what a pleasant surprise on speed. My husband accompanied me on his bike today and it was great! 2.7 mile warmup, then turned off the gravel and onto asphalt for a one mile tempo into town. It felt pretty fast but not completely all out so I was surprised when I ran a 5:52 mile. That would be an unofficial one mile pr. In fact, to my knowledge I haven't run a mile under 6 minutes since 1996. So anyway I slowed down and jogged another 1.8ish miles through town and onto the track. Ran an 86 second 400, jogged a lap, then an 87 second 400. Legs seemed to handle the speed comfortably. Jogged off the track and back up to silkknitter about .8 miles before launching another 1 mile tempo through town on the sidewalk. I was tired but just sort of let my legs "cruise" and ran a 6:16 mile. Slowed back down for about a 3.7 mile recovery jog home. 12 miles all said and done. This workout gives me a little confidence for a 4 mile race next weekend.

Wichita Jingle Bell run (4 Miles) 00:27:09, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1 | | This really isn't much of a race report because I didn't race. I woke up this morning to the alarm, and instead of feeling relief that school was over I felt the crushing weight of a year's worth of fatigue. The weight of a year of 45-70 hour weeks in either an ambulance or in the hospital, of caring for a large family at the same time. I told my husband I didn't feel like racing. We decided I would go and just run it as a tempo run since I had already paid the money and not run all out. Good thing, because I had no desire. I warmed up 2.5 miles--it was 19 degrees I believe. Cold and a little windy but not bad. I cruised along and was surprised I got second. If I had been in the mood first would have been a possibility, because she beat me by only 24 seconds. Ran the mile with Nicholas in 11:47. We had to walk a few times but for having no training whatsoever he did good. Didn't stick around for the awards because we needed to go pick Vanessa up. Came home and went on a 5.5. mile "recovery" run and got emotional and choked up. It has been a long, hard year and it all caught up with me today. Time for rest and recovery. Time to spend more time reading my Bible and praying, and focusing on my husband and children. No overtime at work, and no school. No more racing until I have recouped for a while. My soul, my mind, and my body all need some rest. I wish everyone well for their races this weekend. |

| | 7:52 average pace. Had a good Sunday, had a good weekend with the kids and my hubby. Felt pretty refreshed this morning. Today I feel the relief of being done with school--and today it feels good! 19 degrees with a little wind brrrrrr. Ran one mile in 6:50 because I felt sorta fast for a minute. Otherwise ran pretty brisk to stay warm. Ran without taping my foot for the first time in about 5 months and it felt fine. |

| | 8:58 average pace. Nice and slow, the sleet and snow last night left a crunchy layer on the dirt roads this morning, so my whole run it sounded like I was running on corn flakes. It's supposed to be single digit temps tomorrow with wind, so I guess I'd better enjoy the 20's today. |
| |
| | 7:37 average pace. Did another "fight the wind" run. Warmed up a little into an aerobically brisk pace and just decided to maintain the effort. Temp 10 degrees, -8 with wind chill factor. wind 17mph with 30mph gusts. The sun came out while I was running though and I was actually getting too warm in my fleece overshirt. Good workout! |

| | 7:58 average pace. Felt really easy--that's good! So, in the spirit of just building a base and no-pressure racing here is what the winter/spring schedule looks like. New Year's Eve--beer run. I know, offensive to some. It is a 5k in which you have to stop every half mile and drink 6 ounces of beer before you continue. But...cash and/or new shoes for winners. I've gotta at least try because I could use both! Then, the brutally hilly Topeka to Auburn half marathon in mid-January--net uphill course, not a PR course but will make a flat half-marathon feel easy. February 14 I will be driving to Austin to pace my little sister through her first half-marathon running 9:30 miles. I am excited for her! Next up, March 10, an approximately 2 mile course involving 418 stairs at the new arena in Wichita--sounds tough! I would like to run a marathon and PR in April. Then, May 1, the warrior dash in Texas. 3.51 miles dressed as a warrior which involves 12 obstacles including leaping over fires, swimming under logs, crawling under barbed wire through mud, climbing rope walls, clambering up hay bales, and running in streams of water. Me and my sister will dress like Xena the warrior sisters and my 52 year old mother has suddenly decided that she will dress like Athena and do it too while she is still able-bodied. Go Mom! |

| | So far nothing. About 7pm last night I got really nauseated and then it all started coming out--both ends. Miserable. It was short, though, and by about 3am I finally fell asleep. | | 7:56 average pace. Gave mile repeats a try today. Warmed up 2.7 and then did the first repeat conservative at 10kish pace to get my body used to the idea of it. My legs seem stiff and unresponsive today, not sure why. Time for mile 1 was 6:48, then 4 minutes jogging recovery although I felt recovered after 1 and then 5k pace. 6:25 for this mile, now I am really noticing how stiff my legs are, particularly in the hips. Try as I might I cannot seem to open my stride up and really get going. Four minutes jogging recovery than mile 3 in 6:22. Once again just cannot get my stride opened up but resort to working on fast turnover to hold speed. Felt choppy, the problem is definitely in my hips. They do not always feel like this so it just the thing today, but I am glad I did the workout anyway. Cooled down then did one circuit of strength drills which I have neglected for a long time now. Wow they were hard, I can see now that they really do make a difference and I need to do them! Will work on stretching and strengthening the hips and hopefully next week my mile repeats are a bit faster. Aerobically the 5k pace was tolerable but certainly not comfortable. |

Average pace 8:44, splits ranged from 10:23 to 7:14--how's that for all over the place? I think I will run with the group again--it was nice to not run solo. |

| | 12.81 bike riding date with my husband, mostly easy. Worked on stretching out my hips and hamstrings afterward. Now we are going to make fudge and peanut brittle and package it with tea and coffee for gift baskets for Christmas. Fun! |

| | 8:20 average pace. Felt pretty good once I ran off the weekend staleness. |

| | BRUTAL workout today. 7:42 overall average pace. Haven't done speedwork in a long time but feel like spicing up the routine so plan was 6x1/2 mile at 5k pace with 2 minutes recovery jogging between. 1/2 miles measured per Garmin on the road. 2.67 mile warm up then got started. Intervals were 3:15, 3:00, 3:09, 3:15, 3:13, 3:06. Average 3:10. According to Yasso this means I can run a 3:10 marathon right?;) On the second one I didn't hear the watch beep so I accidentally kept running .16 more for a total of .66 in 4:01(6:05 pace). First one was a little slow(warming up). The fourth one my breakfast almost re-appeared. I did not, I repeat, did NOT want to do the sixth one as I was spent but did it anyway and have that proud post-hard workout feeling. Feels GOOD. 1.12 mile cool down. One circuit of strength drills. |

| | 8:37 average pace. Easy run--had to squeeze it in because I slept in and then had gift baskets to make and had to drop Vanessa off at my mom's before work. Father winter is supposed to bring snow and ice and wind tonight--just in time for my 7a.m. 12-miler tomorrow with the group--the same group I ran with Saturday. Should be fun braving the blizzard! |

| | Nice and easy with the group this a.m. Don't know the exact pace because my watch wasn't working right but estimate it was around 9:30-9:45 by the feel of it. Enough to burn off some Christmas calories! I met some other group members and they are all very nice and they are enthusiastic about their running. I am going to try and run with them at least once a week. |

7:59 pace in the winter wonderland. Snowdrift hopping, tire track running, standing still while flailing into a mighty headwind uphill, than turning around and breathlessly flying down while pushed by the same mighty wind. Wonderful Christmas hanging out with the family. The kids ate chocolate and pancakes for breakfast. Okay, not just the kids, I ate that for breakfast too--thus the quick morning run! More miles to follow later this afternoon!
update: 5.09 more in the wintry dark easy at 8:31 pace. Very peaceful. It helps a little with the guilt of the dietary sins I have committed today--now I am off to commit some more. My two year old just figured out how to use her brother's new marshmellow gun and one white projectile just sailed into the tree. I have actually been eating a few of them off the floor.

| | 8:11 average. Felt very tired and fatigued starting out. Ran 3.7, decided to do a few at half-marathon effort, 7:02 and 7:09 and then gave up. Felt super fatigued the last few miles, almost like I had hit the wall, 9:00 pace was difficult. Wanted to lay down in the snow and take a nap. Abandoned the run and came home. Need some rest I think. |

| | 8:43 average pace. Taking it easy this week and cutting mileage a bit, because I have been plagued by episodes of fatigue and weakness all weekend. I ate well yesterday--lots of green tea, emergen-C, fruit, vegetables, wheat bread, and some red meat. I am thinking I am low on a mineral or electrolyte or something. Did the last .28 today at a pace that was fast yet relaxed, concentrating on opening my stride and staying smooth. Ended up at 6:22 pace. Hopefully this is 5k pace on Friday. |

| | 8:42 average pace. Nice and easy in the dark at 6 am before going to mandatory training and then to work. Didn't have any weakness episodes yesterday so it must have been my nutrition. Still eating extra calories, mostly fruits, vegetables, peanut butter, and a little red meat every day. |

| | 8:27 average pace. Got some new snow last night--so ran on a blanket of snow in the white fog. It was overcast and misty white everywhere but quite still and not terribly cold. I was toasty and sweating buckets by the end. I actually had good traction on the snow and stayed out of the icy tire tracks. My mysterious Golden Retriever friend made an appearance at mile 1 and accompanied me throughout my run. He looks well fed so surely he belongs to someone, I just don't know who. Anyways, he is always a welcome sight. |

| | 8:46 average pace. Super easy with two fast 150 meter bursts, 5:24 and 5:36 pace--warning my body about running fast in the cold tomorrow. I haven't done a 5k in a while so it will be a shock to my system. A repeat sub-20 would be nice. Oh how nice it would be. Hopefully I am mentally there tomorrow so I can make it happen. |
