Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

ummm.  headwind.  16-22mph.  First 8 it wasn't so bad and then after that it was just comically hard.  Uphill starts about mile 9 and I'm glad I wasn't wearing a watch, because I bet I was rolling over 8 minute miles.  I thought it was a tailwind, until about 5 minutes before gun time Joe(slowjoe), burst my bubble and pointed the right way.  headwind.  oh.  so I will just call this one effort based  haha!  7th overall, looks like the wind slowed down most from 5-7 minutes than a normal time...so maybe I am secretly in sub 1:30 shape.  It was awesome to see Joe again.

But, the real story of the day,  somewhere in the second half I heard someone yell my name, loud, "Go April!!"...no idea who it could have been.  When I finished and got to my phone, I had an excited message from my dear cousin Adam who I have not seen in over 5 years, we were very close, and have talked on the phone in the last few months, both of us having recently gone through a difficult time.  So he's like, "April!  you are running A2A and you just ran by my AID station!! call!"  What an amazing coincidence.  Long story short, but I got to have lunch and great conversation with Adam, and we were both just thrilled to pieces that I "ran" into him!!  Amazing!!  He was sitting at the aid station, someone said first female was coming through, and he looked up, and was stunned and started yelling,  that's my COUSIN!!

Next confession.  Tomorrow I will go to fight club and run 20--cumulative fatigue training, since I signed up for a 50 mile race on March 23rd.  The ultra bug is eating me alive, and it is my niche, I know this.  So I have a few ultras planned, but after summer Psycho in July I will revert squarely to marathon training, in hopes for a sub-3 in October, but I must scratch this itch.  100K in April.

That kind of time into that kind of headwind, wow! Nice job on the win. So cool that you had a freak run-in with your cousin--that's one to remember. Good luck on that 20...just pretend it's the last 20 of your 50, and you'll gut it through just fine.

I would say 1:30 minus four minutes....headwinds really mess with.....well heads. Way to go and so happy for a fun reunion!!! R u signing up for sg again...u mentioned an october marathon ??? :-)

Congrats on the win and for toughing it out in the wind. I think you might have to adjust your goals: I'm sure your current ones will tumble very soon...

From SlowJoe on Mon, Mar 04, 2013 at 07:55:35 from 155.219.241.10

Good luck on the 20 today. Uh, and the 30? this weekend. Awesome. After Boston, I might have to try something like that.

Congratulations on the win April. And very cool story about your cousin.

way to go, april. sounds like a tough one. how are you feeling after that 20-miler this morning? definitely your niche :)

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Mar 04, 2013 at 12:59:42 from 69.28.149.29

I think you are openly in 1:30 shape. That said, do not get too excited. Remember the importance of balance. You run your best when moderately, but not excessively motivated. Avoid extremes in training and racing on either end of the spectrum, that is a key to long-term top level performance.

I'm surprised that someone as tiny as you won and didn't get blown away by the wind. You must be a female version of Chuck Norris. Great job!

I like the "comically hard" description of the wind. That's always a treat :-)

You're on a nice upswing right now. Like Sasha said, keep it rolling, don't do anything too crazy (a little crazy is OK) and you'll be knocking down your goals all year.

Neasts--hopefully I scratch my ultra itch in the 50 without doing any damage

Julie--I want to go sub-3 and win my hometown marathon in October. That is my key race this year. I figure after my ultra summer I will have a massive base to build marathon training on.

Bam-thanks, I hope so!

Joe--it will be fun to try something different!

Rachelle--thanks!

Allie--my legs are not sore at all, I was just plain depleted!

Sasha--I hope your prediction is right. I have been pounding some mileage, but run mostly without a watch and mostly slow--don't want injuries! I am quite enjoying my watchless year so far.

Burt--unbelievably, some guy came up behind me about mile 3 and drafted off of me the entire rest of the race!! and he was tall! I could hear him breathing the whole time! I finally ditched him in the final half mile but it was sorta weird

Jake--I stole the description of comical from Joe--because that described it perfectly! I'm hoping my little bit of crazy just gives me a nice base.

Congrats on the win April! Good luck with your entry into the Ultra world! I have a girl friend here in Atlanta who made the switch a few years ago ... she is crushing it & competing to gain entry onto the US Nat'l team ... she loves huge distances!

Congrats on the win, April!

Every time I drop by to read how you are doing, you end up amazing me. Simply amazing. So strong, and now doing ultras. I remember when you and I were doing roughly the same times....that was in another age.

Go April, go. !!
