Good run on the LPT.  I need to take advantage of running there while there is no snow.  The plan called for 14 but I cut it back to 12.  Trying to be smart and be realistic in what I should be running right now.  Hamstrings tightened up a few times but felt really good for the most part.  Felt like a good effort but I always feel that way when I don't wear a watch.  Pace felt like 7:45 but who knows.

Hilly run.  I was short on time and wasn't sure if I was going to make it the full distance.  If I could hit mile 4 at a specific time then I could finish the run.  Otherwise, I would have to cut it short.  Got to the 4 mile marker 10 seconds ahead of my goal so I was able to run the full 9 miles.  Felt really good going up.  My breathing felt very strong and I never felt out of breath at all.  My downhill running form felt very fluid so I ran a little quicker than I usually do.

Woke up and saw a foot of snow outside and it was still snowing.  I was already dreading this run and that didn't help.  Bundled up, headed out the door and put one foot in front of the other for a couple of hours.  Roads weren't horrible except in Centerville.  Very disappointed in Centerville's snow removal effots.  Of the 5 cities I ran through, that was the only one where I didn't have a clear lane to run in.  The pace was very slow.  It took 10 minutes longer to finish the run than what I planned.  Legs felt good for most of the run but started to get really heavy the last 2 miles.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Three easy miles to start then 4 at LT pace then an easy 2 to cool down.  Plan was to keep the pace just below 6:40/mile.  Averaged 6:38 and it felt a little too easy.  I guess that is a good thing.  I was concerned about my right calf so I didn't push.  The only time that it did not hurt was during the tempo run.  It hurt during the warm up and cool down miles and hurts to walk.

Ran to the LPT and met Kam and Tara.  They had already put in a few miles by the time I got there.  Felt really good while running with them and the time flew by.  Tara had to leave after a few miles but I was able to stay with Kam until my mile 14.  The last 3 or 4 miles together we picked up the pace and ran 7:30's.  Felt really good.  As soon as he left, I really struggled.  The pace immediately slowed by a minute per mile and my achilles tendons started to ache really bad.  No reason why this should have happened other than mental fatigue.  Really need to work on that.

Ran on the LPT with a good group.  Kam, Tara, Mark, Allie, James, Jake, Andrea, Cam and Emily.  I was definitely out of my league.  The plan was to run 8 miles then 2 at 6:45, 1 easy then another 2 at 6:45 and finish up with an easy mile.  Temperature was perfect but it was windy and threatening to rain.  Started into the wind wo we would have the wind at our backs for the faster miles.  Pace felt really good and the miles went by quickly.  Amazing how running in a group makes the time go by.  First set of quicker miles felt great.  Ran them both in 6:44.  The next set were a little quicker and felt harder than they should have.  My splits were 6:39 and 6:41 and I fell behind the group by a couple of seconds on the last mile.  During the cool down mile, the rain really started to come down.  I had a lot of fun during this run.  Definitely a lot better then slogging through a slow long run alone.

Met Kam and Tara on the LPT.  We were all about 3.5 miles into the run.  We ran at a comfortable pace.  Just right for a long run.  Kam thought it would be fun to run up to Freedom Hills park and do a couple of laps aournd the park followed up with a run up the switch backs.  The run up to the park was bad enough and the run up the switch backs just about killed me.  I actually liked the change of pace and the use of different muscles seemed to help endure the long run.  Left Kam and Tara after 18 miles and I feared that my pace would plummet again like last time.  Focused on keeping it below 8:00/mile.  Felt surprisingly good.  I knew I was going to be a mile over my planned mileage for the day so I considered walking the last mile home.  Felt good enough to run the last mile and still felt really strong when I finished. One of the many marathon predictors out there says that the time it takes to run a 22 mile training run is a good indicator of how fast you can run a marathon.  Finished in 2:59 so that is a good sign.

Since I did not run yesterday I opted for the full run that was on the schedule today.  I have cut a couple of miles off of the MLR's on the plan because I don't think my body can handle it right now. Pretty uneventful run.  Couldn't keep the ear buds in my ears and got tired of fiddling around with them so most of the run was without music.  It made it really drag by.  Held a relatively steady pace although I let it slow too much on the minor uphills.  At mile 10, I fell on some ice.  Of course it happened right in front of somebody sitting in a parked car.  I can only imagine how cool I looked.

Ran two laps around the outside of Disneyland then the rest of the day walking around the park.  It felt a little strange going to Disneyland without the kids but it was good way to enjoy it.  I usually spend all my time making sure the kids are having fun so it was nice to just do what we wanted to do.  My legs are pretty worn out which may cause my performance at the half on Sunday to suffer.  It's just for fun so I'm not overly concerned.

Just a few miles around the hotel to shake out the legs.  We drove the 1/2 marathon course and it is going to be brutal.  The first half is almost completely uphill.  It's going to be interesting.

Becky has always wanted to run a race at sea level so for Christmas she got me a trip to San Diego to run a half marathon.  What she didn't realize was that she picked a race with a crazy amount of hills.  We flew in to Long Beach on Thursday morning and enjoyed a nice run along the beach.  On Friday we went to Disneyland and did an insane amount of walking.  We relaxed for the monst part on Saturday before driving the course.  It was shocking how much uphill there was.  We were both kind of psyched out.

On the morning of the race, I warmed up with an easy mile.  Legs felt pretty good.  Original goal was under 1:30 but revised it to 1:35 after I saw all of the hills.  There were about 1,500 runners so it was very crowded at the start.  First 3/4 of a mile was downhill (meaning a nice uphill finish).  The race announcer proclaimed that what goes down must come up and I quickly realized we weren't in Utah anymore.  First mile came in at 6:30 thanks to the downhill and felt very comfortable.  I was holding back because I did not want to tear up my legs at the beginning.  Second mile climbed 75 feet then dropped 25 feet.  Split was 6:52 and I was surprised it was that fast and how good it felt.  Third mile was a fun one.  It was a 200 foot steady climb and I ran it in 7:34.  I was consistently passing people and felt really strong.  Everybody was breathing really heavy and my breathing was not labored at all.  I guess this is where living at altitude was an advantage.  The fouth mile started with a 25 foot climb then plummeted 124 feet.  The downhill felt great and came in at 6:36.  Mile 5 offered a little more variety with the ups and downs with a net 125 gain (6:50).  Dropped off a cliff during the first 3/4 of mile 6 (200 feet) before climbing 100 feet over the last 1/4 mile (6:58).  Seventh mile started with a 75 climb then it was flat for a couple of miles (6:56).  Hit the half in exactly 45 minutes and knew I could negative split and come in under 1:30.  Miles 8 and 9 were flat and came in at 6:30 and 6:33.  Felt really good about holding a 6:30 on the flat secitons.  Tenth had a 150 climb over 1/2 mile.  I started to really work the legs and moved past a couple of runners.  A real boost to the confidence.  I knew once I crested this hill, I would have a couple miles of extreme downhill that I could take advantage of.  Finished with a 7:11 and then put the roller skates on.  Ran mile 11 in 6:07 and 12 in 6:34 while passing a couple more runners.  Now it was time for the fun uphill finish.  I started up the hill and saw a runner ahead.  Shifted into my climbing gear (short, quick strides) and felt like I was floating up the hill.  Slowly moved past the runner and kept on moving.  Ran that one in 6:46 which I was thrilled with considering it had a 150 foot climb. Pushed hard through the finish and crossed in 1:28:30.

Very happy with the result.  A bit surprised I was able to handle the hills as easily as I did.  Guess those runs up to Mueller Park are paying off.  Ran back to run Becky up the last hill.  She did really well, coming in at 1:44.  Of course, I had to re-learn the lesson that my "words of encouragement" are not received very well at the end of a race.  Who knew that telling somebody that this was not the time to relax when they are ready to puke would be taken negatively?

It was a great weekend getaway topped off with a great race. Now it's time to really focus on the last few weeks of Boston training.

Nice one, Andy. That's a great effort! Do you feel like that puts a sub-3 in your sights for Boston? You gotta love the sea level and elevation profile...Although, holding sub-7 pace for the remaining 13 miles is a tall order.

I honestly think that Kam is trying to kill me.  Started with an enjoyable 9.5 mile warm up then repeats on the switch backs at Freedom Hills park.  It is a 280 foot climb over 1/2 mile.  He wanted to do 4 but I knew there was very little chance of me completing it.  I was alright on the first and stayed relatively close to Kam.  At the start of the second, I felt like I was pretty much done.  Kam floated up the hlil like it was nothing and I plodded along like an elephant.  I must have experienced some amnesia on the half mile back down because I decided to follow him up a 3rd time.  It was tough.  Once again, the trip down made me think that I had a chance to do another.  Quickly realized it wasn't going to happen.  Told Kam to not wait for me at the top.  I stopped half way up and waited for him to come back down.  I have no idea why I quit.  In hindsight, I probably could have gutted out another 1/4 mile but at the time it seemed like the right decision.  We then labored 3 miles back to his house.  I'm not sure how he felt but I really struggled.  If nothing else, this run was good practice running a few miles after hitting the wall.  My legs were trashed and I really wanted to walk but we plugged along at 8:00/mile.  Good to have a good hard run in the books after taking it a little too easy this week.

Got home and took my girls to play basketball.  They didn't have practice but the court was available so we played for an hour of 2 on 2 to get them used to making quicker decisions during games.  Finished up by rushing them to a soccer game.  Just sat down for the first time today and may not get back up.  Haven't eaten anything or had anything to drink yet.  Not exactly the best recovery method.

Very disappointed with my run this morning.  The 7 mile tempo run is the one run in Pfitz's plan that I always have a problem with.  Warmed up with 3 super easy miles and felt good.  I was going to be running in to the wind for 4+ miles of the tempo miles.  I knew I had to focus on effort and not worry about my splits.  Unfortunately, I could not get my legs to move as fast as I wanted.  The entire run was a struggle even though it didn't feel like I was pushing as hard as I should.  Just couldn't get into the run at all.  The pace was 6:50-6:55 in to the wind and was hoping that the last 3 miles would be decent once I started running with the wind.  The pace got even slower which was a huge blow to my confidence.  I stopped after 5 miles to try and regroup.  Talked myself into finishing the tempo miles even though they were slow.  The last thing that I need is another workout cut short.

Windy, windy, windy.  Out the door at 3:30 so I could be home before 7:00.  Headed to the LPT and ran South so the first half would be into the wind and I would have a nice tail wind on the way home.  Couldn't believe how hard it was blowing.  It was a struggle and I started to question if I would be able to keep going.  Considered doing a few smaller loops to break up the time I had into the wind but decided to keep heading into the wind and get it out of the way.  The LPT turned into the JRP and I was going into unfamiliar territory. Since it was so dark I was getting a little spooked.  Hit a section that had street lights along the trail and that eased some of my fears.  At least until I realized that there must be a reason that they installed lights in this section.  It must really be a bad area.  Hit 1000 North and decided to jump off the trail and run a few miles through Rose Park.  Felt a little out of place being the only person running through Rose Park not carrying a TV.  Hit the half way point and headed back home.  Running with the wind felt great.  I usually struggle the last few miles but I felt like I was getting more energy as the run continued.  Felt better the last 3 miles than I did at any other part of the run.  Finished in 3 hours which was alright considering the wind.

Felt "off" this morning so I skipped the planned run.  Assumed I would end up with a goose egg for the day but had the chance to run right after work.  Becky left from her daughter's dance and I left from home with the plan of catching up to her (she had less than a mile head start).  Ran the first mile in 6:30 (slightly uphill) and felt light headed.  I am not used to running in the afternoon and it took a minute to get into a groove.  Got to the point where our path's met and couldn't see her in either direction.  Decided to continue going for another mile and would turn back if I didn't see her at that point.  Ran the second mile in 6:20 and felt really good.  Turned around and realized I had gotten ahead of her.  Waited for her to catch up and we ran 5 miles together at a comfortable pace.  Dropped her off and decided to ran the last mile at 5k pace.  The first 1/2 mile was slightly downhill which certainly made it easier.  Finished the last mile in 5:50.  These were all bonus miles and felt good to get them in.

Schedule said 17 with 14 at marathon pace.  I have been a little concerned about pacing the 1:35 group at the Riverton half so I decided to use this as a test run.  I wanted to run a little faster than the 7:15 average to account for course difficulty and the possibility of wind.  Ran 2 easy miles (7:55//mile) to the LPT then transitioned to 7:00/mile.  Pace felt very good.  I was able to lock in the pace and hold it for the entire run.  Had a little headwind on the way back which was good practice.  I started to feel glycogen depletion the last 2 miles which was a little disappointing.  I only had 12 oz of Gatorade and 1 GU so maybe with a little more fuel I could sustain the pace longer.  Splits for the MP miles were: 7:00, 7:04, 7:00, 6:56, 7:00, 7:00, 6:58, 7:02, 7:00, 6:57, 6:59, 6:58, 7:00, 6:57.  This definitely eased my concerns for pacing Riverton.

I'm not going to complain about the wind because I didn't have to race in it like many did today.  It is much easier to tolerate when it is just a training run.  Headed to the LPT again.  Am starting to like it a little more.  I was very bored with it for a while but I now prefer it over running through town.  Started into the wind so I could finish running with the wind.  Pace was around 7:50/mile into the wind and it felt comfortable.  Turned around at Rose Park golf course and enjoyed the wind at my back.  At mile 11 I decided to break up the monotony of the run and alternate fast and slow miles.  Ran 6:34, 7:30, 6:30, 7:20, 6:23 for the next 5 miles and finished with 2 easy miles.  There was probably no physiological benefit in me doing that but it felt good.

6 miles: This was supposed to be a big week of training but it is off to a really bad start.  Energy level is really low.  I think I can shift my runs around and still get a good week of running in.  Legs felt very tired and sore this morning.  One of those runs where you feel like you are wasting your time.  I am going to try to get out later this afternoon for a short and easy run.

PM

4 Miles: Just in case you were not aware of this, eating a smothered burrito with cheese before going on a run is not a good idea.  Slow and heavy does not even begin to explain how I felt.  Got the miles in and may still be able to salvage the week.

From Kam on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 20:34:39 from 174.23.234.60

Downhill running where? I've been trying to solve that problem without driving to Ogden Valley or the Provo river trail for 4 years. The downhill around here is much steeper and shorter than you will encounter in a couple weeks. We could do laps up and down Porter Lane; it's pretty gradual from the Cemetery to the Frontage road, 1.1 miles at a time...

From Kam on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 20:35:36 from 174.23.234.60

Any ideas, Andy? One time I ran up to the end of the road in Mueller Canyon, and then ran down, but it was quad trashing too steep.

From Kam on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 20:36:04 from 174.23.234.60

From Tara on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 20:40:53 from 75.169.140.216

How about starting around Davis blvd and run down to trail. Some steep some gradual. Run on trail then run back up. A mix of flat, up and down. Some might call it a little big. Or a muleuller park run. I do like that idea. We needs hills one way or another and I not talking switch backs :)

From Andy on Wed, Mar 21, 2012 at 11:28:29 from 199.190.170.29

Tara/Kam - We could start at Davis Blvd. or MPJH and have 1 mile of steep and 4 miles of gentle downhill to the trail. Is that going to be too much hill running a week before your race?

Epic fail.  Was supposed to be 6 X 3/4 mile at 5k pace.  I got through 3 and the pace was getting progressively slower so I gave up and just finished the miles at a general aerobic pace.  Can't explain what happened.  Just an awful run.  I think I have gotten to the point where I am losing my speed.  I am fine at certain paces but anything faster than 1/2 marathon pace is a real struggle. I think I will just coast into Boston and not worry about the lack of speed.

My body is rebelling against me.  Pace was slow and painful.  I didn't bother wearing my Garmin because I knew I would be disappointed in the feedback it provided.  Just plugged along and got the miles in.  Woke up at 2 am so that may have contributed to the difficulty.  When I left, I thought I had plenty of time to get home and get Ashton to school.  Apparently I ran so slow that we had to leave as soon as I got back.  I am just going to count these as miles in the bank and not worry about anything else.

Met Kam and Tara and MPJH so that we could do some downhill running.  We ended up running quite a varied terrain.  Started with 3/4 mile uphill just to wake up the lungs and legs.  Ran 5 miles down to the LPT then ran a few flat miles along the trail.  We then ran up to Tara's house to drop her off.  Had I known what it was going to take to get up to Tara's I may not have agreed to it.  It was quite the climb.  We were at 12 miles at her house and my Garmin died.  Fortunately, Kam has a built in GPS and knew where to run to get the extra eight miles.  I felt really good during the run.  I had the usual moments of soreness and tired legs but was able to fight through it.  Technically starting the taper but the next week still has a decent amount of miles.

Riverton Half Marathon Pacer (1:35)

Never been more down in the dumps about my fitness level so I am going to keep this brief.  Otherwise, it is going to be very negative and serve no purpose.  Paced the 1:35 group with Craig and stuck to the pace very well.  Got to mile 11.5 and told Craig that I wasn't going to be able to hold the pace and set him on his way.  Pulled the pacer jersey off and jogged the rest of the way trying to cheer on others.  Didn't bother crossing the finish line because there was no point.  In hindsight, I could have finished in 1:35:30 but I felt like I had already failed my goal.  Craig finished in 1:35:03.  Glad he was there to bail me out.  Here are the splits including goal and actual pace:

 Mile  Actual  Goal  Total Variance
 1  7:07  7:06  0:01
 2  7:06  7:10  (0:03)
 3  7:00  7:02  (0:05)
 4  7:29  7:32  (0:08)
 5  7:13  7:10  (0:05)
 6  7:04  7:06  (0:07)
 7  7:19  7:15  (0:03)
 8  7:18  7:15  0:00
 9  7:23  7:19  0:04
 10  7:09  7:19  (0:06)
 11  7:30  7:32  (0:08)
 12  ??  7:19
 13  ??  7:10

In hindsight, I could view this as a success because I was able to help the group get through 11.5 miles right on pace.  On the other hand, I was hoping this was slower than marathon pace.  Don't even feel like Boston is worth the trip at this point.  See, I told you if I kept typing it would get very negative.

Trying to figure out how I got to where I am physically and mentally.  Not crossing the finish line on Saturday really took it's toll on me.  I could have finished within 30 seconds of my goal time but for some reason I felt like I had failed and didn't feel it was appropriate to cross the line.  I will blame it on a glycogen depleted state of mind.  Quitting had never crossed my mind in the past so I need to find out how I let it even be a possibility and learn how to combat it.  Seeing pictures of me running on Saturday did not help.  My weight has gotten to a point that is unacceptable.  I honestly look like an elephanet lumbering down the road.  While my miles per week is not very high, running 55-60 mpw should have brought my weight down. Perhaps it is the lack of intensity in my runs.  This would also explain the loss of mental toughness.  The biggest frustration is that Boston is only 2 weeks away and nothing can be done at this point to help that race.  It's hard to justify the expense of the trip knowing it could quite possible be one of my slowest marathons.  I need to take the last 6 months of training as a jumping off point and refocus on getting myself into better shape for a great fall marathon.

Just needed to vent for a minute.  Time to stop feeling sorry for myself and come up with a plan to feel like a strong, healthy runner again.

Venting can be very therapeutic Andy. You finally run Boston again and this will be my first year in 5 that I opted out. Last year I took a camera, lined up at the very back of the first wave, let everyone else go for a while, then ran and had a blast stopping and taking pictures, and enjoying Boston... until I strained my calf muscle, then I had to walk and it wasn't nearly as much fun. Anyways, Boston can be wonderful in many different ways. Just because it might be one of your "slowest marathons" doesn't mean you can't have a great time.

From Teena Marie on Mon, Apr 02, 2012 at 14:55:21 from 174.27.199.63

Andy~

That is one of the benefits of blogging ... being able to vent to people who get it!

With that said, I really hope that you figure things out so that you can be at peace and happy with your running. :) :) :)

Just a side note: It is my hope that running pictures are a bit skewed. It is very rare that I take a running pic that I like. In my opinion those photos should never be a measuring tool. :)

Mostly, I really hope you are able to enjoy Boston. You might very well be surprised at how well you do. However, if there is a certain time that you have in mind that if you don't meet will ruin it for you (and if you honestly don't think you can meet that time) then maybe you should make this race about something else (as Rhett was referring to). If you really want to take it easy you could always drop back a wave and run with me. :) :) :) With that said, I think you are better prepared than you are giving yourself credit for.

Thank you for your honesty and hang in there, you can't let running define who you are cuz I see not only a great runner but an awesome father!!! I know how hard it is to manage everything but the fact that you are still able to find time to get out the door says a lot about who your are!!! Never ever give up!!!

Keep the faith!!!

I think Boston would be a perfect marathon to take it easy on! Look at all the people you can meet along the way...I think it would be so awesome just to find out a fun little tidbit about as many people as possible! If you're looking at the expense you need to factor in that if you run a fast marathon you are not getting your money's worth. Those on the course longer are getting much more for their money! ;o)

Last real workout before Boston.  3 X 1 mile at 5K pace with 1/2 mile jog in between.  Couldn't find my Garmin so I decided to head to the LPT and use the mile markers there and time myself with the stop watch on my phone.  Probably good to do this without constantly checking on my pace.  Considering how I have been feeling lately I chose a realistic pace of 6:15/mile.  The warm up felt a little clunky but once I transitioned to 5k pace the form felt a lot better.  First mile was a good effort.  Didn't kill myself and expected the split to be slow.  Came in at 6:00.  A bit of a surprise.  Let's see if I can keep it up.  Second was more work (as it should be).  Expected it to be a little slower based on how I felt but ended up finishing in 5:53.  Only one more mile to go then all of my remaining runs are at whatever pace I want them to be.  First 1/2 mile was 2:55 then I started to fade a little.  Focused on leg turnover to get through the last 1/2 mile and finished at 6:00.  Very happy with how this run turned out.  I definitely needed this.  Hopefully this is the runner that shows up in Boston and not the one that struggled with 7:15/mile at Riverton.

While debating whether I should wear a long or short sleeve shirt, I happened to look out the window and noticed that it was snowing hard.  Definitely one of the worst snow storms this year.  Threw on a jacket and running pants and headed out.  The snow was coming down hard that it seemed like I was running through a solid sheet of snow.  Of course the roads were not cleared because the plows have been put away for the year.  I'm glad that I only had an easy 5 miler planned.  Just plugged away until the run was done.  Just out of curiosity, how many days does it take for the weather here to make it to the east coast?

Perfect morning for a run.  Ideal temperature.  Started with an easy 3 then ran 2 miles at marathon pace.  Ran both miles in 6:50 which is a little faster than projected marathon pace but I wanted to see how it felt.  Felt very good.  Heart rate felt a little faster than MP so I know I could not sustain the pace for a full marathon.  With 1/2 mile to go I could see Becky ahead.  Slowly closed the gap until there was 0.2 miles left and I ran all out to catch up to her.  Surprised how good that fast pace felt.

Ran the BAA 5k with Becky. Figured that since I usually put in a couple of easy miles before a marathon I would be alright running. Started with an easy couple of miles from the hotel to the start line. There were 6,000 people running so it was very crowded. First mile was a little slow because of the congestion (7:40). Next two miles were about 7:20 pace and felt very good. Saw Rachelle along the course cheering on the runners. I was soaking wet after the run which has me very concerned about tomorrow. I was running slower than MP and it was 15 degrees cooler than it is going to be. Going to try to hit the Sox game today and relax as much as possible.

Race: Boston Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:42:17
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
0.0026.2026.20

Part of me would like to forget this race completely.  I can't treat it as a learning experience or something to grow from. because I am not walking away with anything that I didn't already know.  Quite simply, it was a huge disappointment because it is hard evidence of where I am as a runner right now and I do not like it.  Despite the heat, these results are not acceptable.  That is not to say that I have any regrets because the trip was absolutely amazing.  The last time I was in Boston was the year of the Noreaster and I couldn't enjoy all that Boston had to offer.  We were able to do everything that should be done in Boston this time.  We flew in Thursday and had dinner and Legal Seafood.  Did a nice 7 mile run exploring Boston then did the Freedom Trail and Expo on Friday.  Went whale watching on Saturday and had dinner in China town with Teena & Ryan, Smooth & Larry, Lloyd, Ronnie, Lark, Jeff, Marcie, Mindy and others.  On Sunday we ran the BAA 5k, went to the Red Sox game, pasta party and the Italian village on the North end.  It was a really great trip.

Now on to the race.  With the temps expected to be in the mid to high 80's and all of the warnings that the BAA sent out, I knew that it was going to be slow.  I decided to target 3:20 figuring that dropped me back 10-15 minutes from my original plan.  If I were smart, I would have turned it into a long run and gone for 3:30.  I guess what makes us who we are is our drive and desire to not settle.  Called Kam on Sunday night and decided to meet him in corral 7 and run with him.  After riding the bus to Hopkinton and hanging out in the athletes village with Teena, Smooth, Lloyd, Ronnie, Lark, Jeff and Mindy I made my way to corral 3 and thought about ditching the plan to run with Kam.  I ultimately decided that running with somebody I knew would be a better experience than starting a couple of minutes sooner so I headed back to find him.  The gun went off and 6 minutes later we crossed the starting line.  We started at a very controlled pace.  First 3 miles were in the 7:15-7:20 range.  Despite the fact that I was sweating buckets I suddenly had the urge to pee during the 4th mile (I think).  We passed a wooded area and I thought this would be the last place I could go before we started into the towns and all of the crowds.  As I was taking care of business, a lady ran in front of me, dropped her shorts and did her thing.  What is it about running that makes us lose all inhibition?  I spent the next 1/2 mile working my way back up to Kam.  In hindsight, this was a mistake.  The pace felt great but it probably took a little out of me.  I drank Gatorade and dumped a cup of water on my head at every aid station and Gu'd every 4 miles.  Held a steady pace but I knew my body was working too hard.  Kam and I got sepearted at the mile 7 aid station.  I eventually saw him about 20 yards ahead and just kept on eye on him for the next couple of miles.  At mile 8 I started having the internal conversation that usually doesn't happen until mile 20 so I knew I was in for a long day. Lost sight of Kam for good at mile 9.  My pace slowed but was still reasonable.  I made a goal to make it to Wellsley.  When I got to Wellsley I decided that I was going to do what you are supposed to do in Wellsley.  After high fiving for a bit, I stopped for my first kiss.  Stopped for 2 more along the way and I have now exactly doubled the number of women that I have kissed in my life from 3 to 6 (sad but true).  My pace hadn't dropped off too much and I still felt I could salvage a semi-respectable time.  Hit the half in 1:39:?? which was perfect for a 3:20 finish.  My next goal was to get to the Newton hills.  Took my first extended walking break through an aid station at mile 16.  I convinced myself that I would not walk any of the Newton hills.  Ran all 4 of them and only walked a short time in between a couple of them.  Crested Heartbreak Hill and that was it.  My race was done.  It was run/walk the rest of the way.  After a short walk break I would start running and felt decent and thought I could keep it up but eventually had to walk again.  No way to sugar coat it.  It was awful, embarassing, pathetic, weak, disappointing.  As I approached the Citgo sign I started thinking that I should start seeing some white bibs (wave 2 start).  Looked back and sure enough here comes one flying down the road.  Looked again and it was Rachelle.  Unbelievable how well she was running (not really unbelievable because she is a great runner and was very well prepared).  At this point I made as good of an effort to run the rest of the way.  Becky was at the Hynnes convention center so I stopped and gave her a kiss before stumbling that last 200 yards to the finish line.

Felt about as bad as I ever have at the end of the race.  Walked for what seemed like forever to get my drop bag.  While walking to find Becky I got my phone out and sat down to text my mom that I was done and still alive and kind of had an emotional break down.  Getting emotional is not something that I do so it was strange.  Eventually pulled myself together and Becky was able to track me down and we walked back to the hotel.

Now I need to figure out what happened.  I was very well hydrated going into the race and feel as though I had a decent store of glucose.  My best guess is that the heat has a greater effect on heavier runners.  I started the race over 190 pounds and I think it takes a lot of work for my body to regulate the temperature.  The other possibility is that this is just the runner that I am now.  I have been running for 8 years and the rule of thumb is that you only improve for 7 years.  Add to that me turning 40 and I may just be on the downside of running.  Fortunately, there are enough runners around to disprovie that.  What I do know is that tomorrow morning I am going to wake up and go running.

Andy first of all congrats on finishing. Secondly don't for a second doubt yourself. We have all been there and it sucks. At Ogden last year I ran a 1:39/2:10. I felt how you feel, I was demoralized and wanted to quit running forever. But instead I learned from the experience, worked my please do not swear off and in all honestly it may have been the greatest thing that ever happened to me. You will pull through this. We all know how strong of a runner you are.

From Andrea on Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 15:41:12 from 155.100.226.54

Andy you can't be too disappointed. In the direct sunlight (most of the race), they are saying the effective temperature was ~95 degrees. And yeah, a 110 lb guy definitely dissipates heat a lot better than bigger guys. Its just plain tough to run in these kind of conditions and it doesn't reflect your fitness level at all. There are lots of runners who improve after 7-8 years and after they turn 40. Chin up, don't lose your confidence!

Time, schmime... I "watched" your race online and knew you were way off your game. So were a lot of other runners! It was hot and you were not acclimated to the heat. Those temps after a summer of running would not have been as bad as they were in early spring.

However, reading your report made me want to run Boston again. I want to have dinner at Legal Seafood. I want to run and explore Boston. I want to do the Freedom Trail. I want to go whale watching again (did this last time and it was AMAZING!!). I want to have dinner in China town with all those lovely runners. Most of all I want to kiss 3 Wellsley girls!! The end of your race, I don't want that so much, but would take it in exchange for everything else.

Congratulations on a great trip and finishing a tough race.

I read your report while I was at the airports and didn't get to comment. My first feeling then was I felt heart-broken for you...I felt your agony of those miles at the backside of Heartbreak. Those miles on Commonwealth really stink. It is such a crushing blow. Even on the years that I thought I had trained hard and prepared well for Boston and its infamous Newton Hills...I still was reduced to a death march for the last 5K.

I agree with Andrea. You will rise from this tough tough demoralizing race. You are a talented and intelligent runner. Don't give up on chasing that PR.

P.S. Larry and I absolutely adore Becky. He can't say enough good things about her. I am so glad you had a great trip with your sweet Becky. Has she ever considered getting her BQ and go back with you? She is a jewel. You two make a good team.

I read this long ago but was unable to leave a message with my phone at the time. I wanted to say that I wouldn't use this race as an indicator of your future success. You don't ever stop growing and learning as a runner and that can come in many forms my friend. You have speed left in those (newly)Master's legs my friend. At least you did last month when I ran with you and up Freedom Hills. Chalk up to the experience and on to the next. BTW, I do think you are right about the difficulty of staying cooler for your size. You are a machine, and Kam and I running next to you are your little munchkins...ESPECIALLY when we're running in the gutter:) Take care of your legs, looks like you are already coming back.

Yes, Tara, I knew what the "friend" comment meant. I was just trying to get over you calling me fat.

From Kam on Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 12:43:16 from 68.66.163.179

What she meant to say was "big-boned." Boy, that could be an autocorrect fail.

From Tara on Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 12:53:47 from 75.169.148.68

No no no no no no no no no no! This was all misunderstood.

When I said, "You don't ever stop growing and learning as a runner and that can come in many forms my friend." I meant what it says, you will always be growing both up and out and that can change your form!

And when I said, "You have speed left in those (newly)Master's legs my friend." I meant- you are old, my friend.

Lastly, when I said, "difficulty of staying cooler for your size. You are a machine." What I meant was- you are large and obese. You are a monster.

Whew! Glad that was all cleared up!

Aren't you glad we are friends?

BTW Kam, I think I should clear up what I meant about my last comment concerning your diet and gut several weeks ago...You are also obese.

Opened this one up to read other Boston experiences now that I have finally taken the plunge. First of all, your comment about kissing the ladies cracked me up. Also, Rachelle's comment being red-lined is another favorite. Third, my own comments were having me rolling on the ground all over again. Lastly, I've changed my mind, you're none of those things I called you except for the friend part:) Kam and Rachelle, I'm heading over to yours now.

I'm now paying the price of taking a few days off of work.  Too much work to do this morning so I wasn't able to sneak a run in.  My legs feel heavy but not sore so I should be able to pick up the mileage next week.

I've been thinking a lot about what happened on Monday and unfortunately I think that I cannot simply blame it on the heat. While I was reviewing my training over the past couple of months I noticed a trend that I need to reverse.  I am becoming a quitter.  I often times take the easy way out instead of pushing hard in training to build mental toughness.  It started with the switch back repeats at Freedom Hills park that I didn't finish.  There was a tempo run that I abandoned followed by a few VO2 workouts that I completely skipped.  Then there was the disaster at the Riverton 1/2 (another hot race).  Have I completely lost what little mental edge I had?  I wonder if I can find the desire to rebuild what I have lost.

It took a lot of guts to admit that. I know that's why so many of my races suck. Dig deep man. You'll get that edge back.

From Kelli on Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 18:56:51 from 71.219.98.16

I do not track everyone's blog like I used to, but I can speak for me that I have gotten in a few funks and just needed to take a break. I still ran, but just laid low for a bit. Maybe that will help.

I still think you are GREAT! I do not think Riverton was as catastrophic as you feel. It is hard as a pacer and when you feel like you are not helping people get there, stepping back or out is fine---that is why Walter has two of us! Riverton is a tough course and it was hot and windy AND you were pacing a FAST time. And Boston is what it is, so many people did not hit their goals. I think the fear of the heat and the warnings may have even scared many from trying, or given them an excuse-like you said.

NO WORRIES! The mental edge will come back. Once it is in you, it is in you. ;o)

Absolutely perfect morning for a run.  It started to rain a little towards the end but it felt really good.  Other than a little soreness in my achilles tendons everything feels good.  The plan is to get a few more miles in this afternoon while my girls are at soccer practice.  Let's see if I can stick to the plan.

PM: 5 miles

Nice and easy miles through Centerville while the girls had soccer practice.  Kept a steady 8:00/mile and felt very comfortable.  I need to make better luinch choices when I am planning on running in the afternoon.  For future reference, the Costco pizza/hot dog combo is not good pre-run food.

AM - 8 miles

Another gorgeous morning.  Although, I could have gone without the smell of the dump.  My left knee is really bothering me.  Tried to keep my form as normal as possible but favoring the knee threw me off a little.  The pace felt a little more uptempo than I usually run but I have been running watchless lately so I really have no idea what the pace actually was.  Probably a little below 7:30/mile.

PM - 5.5 miles

Dropped my girls off at soccer practice in Farmington and thought I would run by Farmington Bay.  My horrible sense of direction and awareness put me in the middle of a swamp.  After wading through some stinky mud and hopping a fence found my way on to a dirt road.  Followed it to the Legacy Trail in Centerville where I looped back to the soccer fields.  Crossed paths with JD and ran with him for a couple of miles.  I've said it a million times before but the effort when running with somebody seems so much easier than when you are alone.  JD and I had a good "runners" conversation.  No knee or ankle pain during the run.  Leads me to believe that the pain in the morning is just start up pains.

We are in Boise for my daughter's soccer tournament.  Looked at a map and had an idea of where I wanted to run.  Unfortunately, my sense of direction is so bad that I ended up running the opposite direction.  Meandered around town for awhile and eventually found myself by BSU and eventually in downtown Boise.  Found my way to a nice river trail next to the Snake River.  Wish I had discovered it earlier in the run.  It would have been a really nice place to run.  My knee was really bothering me yesterday but felt ok after 4 miles into the run.  Other than that, I felt really good.  Pace was 7:45 at the beginning of the run then dropped to low 7's at the end.  Last mile was 6:45.  Most interesting observation of the run was how many lingerie shops that I passed (at least 5).  Wasn't aware there was that much demand for that in Idaho.

Left knee is a real problem.  I'm going to wait until this afternoon and see if it feels better and attempt a run then.

Just out of curiosity, if I have a stabbing pain on the inside of my knee that makes it difficult to walk, is it alright if I don't run today?  Part of me thinks that it will warm up and feel good once I start running.

Trying to salvage the week with a nice long run.  Headed to the LPT where I saw Kathie.  Actually, I was in a daze and would have missed her had she not said anything.  Glad to see her getting some good mileage in.  The miles on the LPT went well.  Kept the pace around 7:30-7:45.  Got off the LPT at Glover and headed to Main Street.  This is where the run got ugly.  My ankles were really bothering me and I was unable to get a decent push off.  Pace drifted above 8:00/mile for a few miles.  Stopped at Smoot park for a drink of water and a GU and that seemed to jump start my body.  Felt a lot better so I picked up the pace.  Ran the last mile in 7:13 just for fun.  It was a little more difficult than it should have been.  Wore a singlet so that I could do something about my farmer tan.  It rubbed my arms raw.  Very, very sore.

(Fyi: it may be the placebo effect but I often like to shock my legs with contrast baths when they feel dead, heavy, weak, etc. I fill two bathtubs: one with ice water and the other with very warm water. I do a 4:1 ratios since there has been some positive research for those numbers regarding inflammation. I.e., 4 minutes in the warm bath, scurry over to the ice bath and do 1 minute there for a total of 20 minutes (so 4 rounds). It's just an idea. :))

Started with 12 miles on the LPT.  Had very little energy.  It took all that I had to get out the door.  First couple of miles were 8:15 then transistioned into 7:45's for the rest of the run.  Legs didn't feel like they were working hard and my breathing wasn't labored but it felt like a lot of work.  I'm so tired of feeling this way.

After the run, I took my girls to the Davis Dash 5k.  They have been excited about doing this race.  They did really well.  They didn't walk a single time during the run which is a first for both of them.  Gracie held a little lead on Emma most of the run.  The course was a bit long.  They hit 5k in 31:52 and 32:00.  They were shooting for 32:00 so they were happy to meet their goal.  Emma could have finished a lot sooner but she needs to figure out how to push herself harder.

Just a few miles to shake out the legs before tomorrow's half.  Kept the pace relatively easy.  I pushed the pace for a mile to make sure the legs could move at a decent pace.  I used a crossfit group that was out running as a target.  I wanted to pass them before they got to their turnaround point.  Still not feeling at the top of my game.  In fact, I cannot remember feeling this out of shape in a very long time.  It is not just while I am running.  I feel slothful and just blah througout the day.  Tomorrow will be a good barometer of where I really am.

Race: Ogden 1/2 Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:29:17, Place overall: 50, Place in age division: 3
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
1.5013.1014.60

The intent of this race was to be a gauge of my fitness.  If I couldn't come in under 1:30 I was going to have to do a serious assessment of what I am doing.  I can't believe that I have gotten to the point where breaking 1:30 is a stretch goal.  Really didn't give the race too much thought until 10 last night when I got home from my girl's soccer game.  Rummaged through my drawers to find something to wear.  I usually give considerable thought to my race attire.  After a restless night of sleeping due to a bird trapped in my chimney, I got up and headed to the Ogden.  Temps in the valley were perfect but it was freezing at the starting line.  Ideal for a race.  At the starting line I began to relace my shoe and suddenly heard the countdown for the start.  Wasn't expecting it so soon.

 Mile  Split  Note
1 6:52  Started out fast (6:10) but overall split was slow because of the hill during the second half of the mile.
 2 6:48 Settled into a comfortable pace.
3 6:49  Locked in.  Holding it here so I don't blow up.
 4 6:50
5 6:30  Really steep section right after the dam.  Got passed by a few people but I am opting to maintain a consistent effort.
 6 6:50 Feeling a little light headed.  Took a GU at 5.5.
 7 6:47
8 6:46 GU kicked in and my head is a little more clear.
9 6:40  A little steeper section at the bottom of the canyon.  Effort has not changed.
10 6:36 Calculate that 7 minute miles will give me sub 1:30.  Don't give in yet.
 11 6:42
 12 6:49
13 6:41 A couple of runners that I have followed for several miles start to come back to me.  As I am on the long boring stretch to the finish line I see another heavier runner.  I decide that I cannot be beat by him.  Push the pace a little and move by him.
13.1 1:30 My Garmin measured 0.25 so the pace is a little quicker.  Felt really good.

Satisfied with the results but would not consider it a complete success.  I was able to maintain a very consistent effort throughout the race and am happy with running a smart race.  I chose a time that was very realistic.  It's unfortunate that it is 5 minutes slower than I would like but considering that I was expecting a colossal failure today, I can live with it.  I am a little disappointed that I did not push harder.  I never pushed beyond comfortably hard.  I believe I did this because I was afraid of another terrible race.  Also, not doing any speedwork in a long time has made me forget what my true limits feel like.  Ended up placing 3rd in my age group which was a bit of a surprise.

So happy to see that you came in under your goal and that the BIG guy motivated you to push a little. ;o)

We had quite the discussion about being able to push past the comfortably hard stage of running. We were talking about runners in the medical tent and runners who pass out at the finish and so on. I just do not have that in me. When it gets really hard, my body and mind quit. I DO NOT have the ability to push that hard. BUT, the question is, do I want it???? I do not wanna pass out, but I sure do wish i could push harder. Just a thought.

Almost skipped the run completely.  Forced myself out for a few easy miles.  Felt better than yesterday so I am glad I got the run in.  Training for Huntsville starts on Monday and I am wondering if I should use a different training plan since it didn't work out very well last time.  I roughly follow something between Pfitz's 55 and 70 mpw 18 week plans.  They are more focused on mileage with only one high intensity run per week.  I wonder if I should back off the mileage and have a couple of faster runs.  Who knows?  Maybe the last training cycle was just a building block for a good fall marathon.

From Andy on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 10:44:11 from 159.212.71.173

The Huntsville (Ut) marathon is on Sept 29. It starts in the Monte Cristo area and finishes in Huntsville just before the Pineview reservoir. It is a gentle downhill course the entire way so should be a fast one. This is the first year so you never know what you are going to get.

From Rachelle on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:13:40 from 159.212.71.25

I will have to look into that one Andy. I am still trying to pick a fall marathon. I was thinking about Layton but this one may be a better option.

From Andy on Wed, May 23, 2012 at 13:25:26 from 159.212.71.173

Tim - I've done St. George a few times and thought I would try a different race this year. It's closer to home so I can save a few $$$.

Rachelle - Here's a link to their site: http://www.huntsvilleutahmarathon.com/. I considered Layton but it is a flat and boring course so I opted for this one. The only red flag that I have seen is it is a 10 a.m. start. Makes me wonder how "runner friendly" it will be. Doesn't seem like they have a good grasp on what runners want. Top of Utah would be a good one for you. It's established and well organized and you will have good competition that will help push you to sub-3.

Andy my last 2 1/2 marathons I alternated training programs one with a little higher mileage and just 1-2 hard/long workouts and the other one with less miles but 2-3 hard workouts. The end result seemed similar but I felt more beat up and on the verge of injury with the lower-miles/hard-runs plan. So for me I'm sticking to something closer to the Pfitz stuff.

Met Kam for a run on the BST.  Good climb during the first mile to get to the trail.  Pace was comfortable while we were on the trail.  My effort during the climbs was a little high but they were relatively short so I was able to keep up with Kam.  Got off the trail and dropped into Farmington.  Felt really good until we got to Main street and Icould start to feel my glucose levels getting low.  Typical symptoms: tingly fingers, foggy head.  Felt like we picked the pace up but it was probably the same effort as the trail.  We were just able to move faster on the road.  Last mile was a little tougher for me and I know I was holding Kam back.  We both ran watchless which made the run so much more enjoyable.  It was nice to be running for running's sake and not worried about pace or distance.  I realized that the best part of a good hard run like that is how good that first moment that you sit down feels.  Somewhat of a euphoric feeling when you are so physically spent and feel good about what you had just done.

Stayed in Midway because we were running the dirty dash.  Woke up super early to get some miles in before the dash because I was sure there would be very little running during it.  Left the Homestead and headed towards Wasatch State Park.  Thought it would be fun to run a couple of miles up Guardsman Pass.  While the run up was really hard, I thought too much downhill running was going to cause problems for me so I turned and headed back.  Continued on towards Soldier Hollow and an incredibly comfortable pace.  Definitely took it way too easy but just getting miles in was all I was concerned about.  Ended up with 12 miles.  That is a really pretty area to run.

"Ran" the dirty dash with my kids.  It really isn't much of a run because it is so crowded.  The kids had a ton of fun which was the important thing.  At the end of the course, I decided to dive into the too shallow pool of mud.  Hit a rock with my hand and opened up a big gash on my hand which required 7 stitches to close.

Great run Andy! My form almost always suffers when running downhill.

I have a friend that I am hoping to pace to a 1:35 at AF half next weekend. I do not have any desire to race that race but since I'm already registered I told him I would try to help him acheive his goal. I see that your the 1:35 pacer so I'm planning to be hanging with you. :)

I am sorry Andy! I will be hanging with you at Sat race. Pacing a friend to a hopeful 1:35 so look for me at the start and we can warm up a bit if you want. Starting out at a sub-7 pace is incredibly hard for me without a little warm up.

I wasn't as confident going into this pacing job as I would have liked.  It was disheartening that running a 1:35 on an aided course was causing me concern.  Felt good this morning which eased a lot of my concerns.  Didn't get a chance to get any warm up miles in.  I think that I am going to skip the warm up miles for half marathons from now on.  Some of my best races have been when I have skipped the warm up.  Race started and I did my best to keep the pace in check.  The extreme donwhill at the start made this difficult.  Did my best to stick to the splits on the pace band.  I was within a few seconds every mile.  1:35 is kind of an odd time so I didn't have a lot of company.  Ran with Rachelle and her friend for the first 3 miles than with another guy until mile 10.  Other than that, I was on my own.  At the 12 mile marker I somehow found myself 7 seconds behind schedule.  Fortunately, the last mile had a cushion built into it.  I ended up running the last mile a little too fast and finished 12 seconds before 1:35.  Felt really good for the entire run (except for the hill on mile 11).  Ran 3 easy miles after the race just for some bonus miles.

Loved the course.  Wonder if I will think the same thing next month when I run it finish to start to finish during the Sogonapmit Marathon.

Great miles this morning Andy!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Had the brilliant idea to run up to the Bountiful temple then come back home along the Beautiful Bountiful half marathon course.  The extreme uphill followed by extreme downhill will help prepare me for Sogonapmit.  I also wanted to get a feel for the 1/2 marathon course.  I drove it over the weekend but it is really hard to gauge the extent of the downhill without running it.  Running uphill would force me to put some honest work in.  I felt very tired and lazy this morning and would have settled for an easy few miles if I didn't force myself to do this.

Achilles tendons were sore to start but loosened up and felt better a couple of miles into the run. I felt better going uphill than I thought I would.  It was hard but I was in the right mindset so it went by quickly.  Once I got to the temple and started coming back down I shifted into relax mode and just coasted down the hill.  My legs were too beat up to push the pace coming down.  A lot more lazy than I should have been but still felt good to get in decent mileage for the day.

As far as the course goes, I only noticed 3 sections with super nasty downhill.  They put enough switchbacks into the course to minimize the grade coming down.  It is still too steep for a really good time and isn't "beautiful" like the name suggests.  There are also a lot of twists and turns and runners will get lost if they do not mark the course extremely well.  I'm not going to complain because the more races in the area, the better.

Becky was running a 10k so I decided to put in some miles then run it with her.  Her 10k pace is close to my long run pace so it would be perfect.  Out the door at 5 am and headed to the LPT.  Temperature was perfect and it was very quiet.  Felt decent during the run but half way through I got an intense pain in my left big toe.  Couldn't push off at all.  Stopped and rubbed it out (if that is even possible) and it seemed to feel better.  Got to the 10k start having already put in 14 miles.  Took in a GU and hoped it would be enough fuel for the next 6 miles.  Felt surprisingly good during the race.  Started a little quick but settled into 8:00/mile pace and held that for most of the run.  Surprised at how good I felt at the end of the run.  Definitely had enough fuel in the tank to run a few more miles.  Of course, I didn't and called it good after 20.

Finished the first half of the year a little bit behind on my mileage goal.  Boston taper and recovery made April and May abnormally low mileage months.

When I signed up for this, the idea was that it would be a good opportunity for a long run.  Nothing more.  I didn't want to race.  I didn't even look at my watch on the way up to the halfway point.  Of course, with such a small race, there is always the chance of placing so that was in the back of my mind.  Woke up at 1:30, got ready and headed to the starting line.  Since the aid stations were self service, I filled a bottle with powerade and carried it in a fuel belt.  The race started right at 3:20.  Got a little over zealous at the start and had the lead for the first 1/4 mile.  Seth Wold quickly remedied that and took off.  Another runner passed me shortly after that and yet another during the little climb by the temple.  The 3rd place runner missed the turn onto 900 West and came running back to me.  Stuck with me for a few minutes then started to gap me.  He missed the turn onto the trail and I yelled to get his attention.  From this point he hung back with me.  Maybe he thought I had any inclination of where we were going.  I wrote down directions on how to get to the canyon so I was semi-confident that I could get us there.  Unfortunately, the real life streets at 4:00 a.m. look much different than they do on Google maps.  I knew that we jumped off the trail momentarily, turned on a street then got back on the trail. We missed the trailhead and I saw another one so we took it.  That one took us straight up a mountain and it didn't feel right.  Got to the top and we knew we were in the wrong place.  We turned around and headed back down to where we were supposed to be.  It was easy to find now because of the trail of headlights.  I felt horrible.  I didn't mind me getting lost but the fact that I took somebody else off course really made me feel bad.  It only ended up being 0.4 miles but it cost us 4 minutes and we were in 3rd and 4th place before the wrong turn.  All I could think about was I possibly cost this guy a chance to place.  Despite the set back, it was kind of fun passing people along the trail.  Got to the mouth of the canyon and the real fun began.  I started to gap the guy I was running with and started to worry that I was pushing too hard going up the hill.  Slowed a little and he passed me.  We played leap frog a few times and I eventually got ahead of him for good.  The best thing about starting so early is that it is too dark to fully understand what you are doing.  I focused on 10 feet in front of me and just kept my legs moving.  Short, quick comfortable strides.  Got past a few more runners and could only see one more ahead of me.  Was it possible that I had made up all of the lost ground?  With about a mile to go I saw the leader coming back down.  Shortly after that, I saw second place.  As I got closer and closer to the top, I couldn't see anybody else.  With 1/2 mile to go to the turnaround, a couple of guys went by me moving pretty fast.  Where did they come from?  Got to the top, ditched my headlight, vest and fuel belt.  Seems like everybody else kept their reflective vests and headlights.  It was still incredibly dark but I didn't want to deal with them once it got warm.  Stayed about 20 feet behind the 4th place runner for the first 2 miles going down the canyon.  I started to have the urge "to go" and saw a campground restroom so took advantage of it.  This is just a long run after all.  Came out and there was nobody in sight.  Shifted back into long run mode and just held a comfortable pace.  I really didn't want to blow up and have to walk.  Still not over the Boston experience.  My plan was to keep the pace under 8:00/mile for the rest of the race.  Doing so would enable me to finish before any of the half marathoners which was my main goal.  Pace was 7:30's coming down the canyon then slowed to 7:50 ish once I was out of the canyon.  There was still nobody in sight ahead of me and couldn't see anybody behind.  On the long stretches I thought I could see a runner coming back to me but soon realized that it was just the balloons at a mile marker or somebody out jogging the other way.  With 1.1 miles to go I knew that I had made it and just enjoyed the rest of the run.  Ended up finishing in 3:42:24 and 5th place overall.  It was a few seconds slower than my Boston disaster but considering the wrong turn and bathroom break, it is technically faster.  Maybe I have just become the 3;42 guy.  Most importantly, the extra 4 minutes from going off course didn't make a difference in the grand scheme of things.  I would have still finished where I did and the other guy came in a little later so my mistake didn't prevent him from placing.

Here is what I am taking away from this run.  It is a fun event if you don't take it too seriously.  It would be fun to run with a group of people.  I can still actually cover 26;2 miles without having to walk.  That was seriously in doubt.  The extra weight has taken it's toll on me and I have completely lost my speed and I am o.k. with that.  It can be somebody else's turn to chase PR's.  I can have fun in events like this and pacing other races.  Not sure what I am going to do about Huntsville.  Anybody need a 3:30 pacer?

Really really LOVE your report! Put a huge smile on my face!

I know exactly where you went off course! last year I was glad I previewed the course, running the parkway and trail to the golf course and made note of that hill on the road and where to connect with the right trail.

I agree that running in the dark up the canyon seems so much easier than in day light even though it is just a perception!

I 100% agree that this race is fun and ought to be run with such attitude!

Good job, Andy! It was so good to see you and Becky! She is amazing for running this half so soon after the 10K. Please tell her I think she is super awesome!

I wish they marked that course better for the marathoners---that is why I brought a tour guide with me last year!

Great job today. I am glad that you enjoyed it. You did great! I took it very seriously last year the second half of the race and did not finish much faster than you did today, so you are still fast---not sure what you are talking about on that! It is not an easy course.

Pacing is so much fun, if that is what you want to do from now on, I say go for it! It is a very fulfilling way to run a lot of races (and for free).

Hope you are feeling good and not too sore. ;o)

Great recap Andy! I can definitely relate to the "what in the heck am I doing feeling" as I was running at 2am last week for Ragnar. It is such an odd feeling to be running in the middle of the night.

I definitely agree that this race is one to do just for fun and it sounds like you did just that. That said it is definitely not easy and you should be really proud of yourself.

I can't believe allie made sore muscle comment that didn't include a tennis ball. Nice marathon, last weekend, Andy. Each time I look at the name, it looks so close to "armpit" at the end.

the original comment actually said: "(and ice and tennis balls)", but it didn't make it through the final edit because i figured it would only lead to confusion and dismay.

I didn't get the results I desired today but I did get the results I deserved.  I have got to stop pretending that my physical state is not declining.  This is my "home" race as it goes along roads I run on very often so I couldn't pass it up.  It was a super small race (maybe 100 finishers).  The first half is predominantly downhill (with a few extreme downhill sections) and the last half is pancake flat.  My plan was to run around 6:40/mile during the first half and around 7:00/mile for the second half.  The start was at the mouth of Mueller Park canyon.  I was happy to be in a place that I was familiar with and I knew where the secret bathrooms were so I could avoid the POP's.  Legs felt lethargic at the start of my warmup but much better at the end.  The race started and I took off way too fast - average pace was sub 6:00 for the first little bit.  My mindset still has not changed from when I could actually run at a decent pace.  This has gotten me into trouble at a few races.  Settled into 3rd place behind BJ Christensen and another guy that was not far behind him.  After 2/3 of a mile of good downhill we turned onto Bountiful Blvd. for the only uphill section of the race.  Hit the first mile in 6:40 and the second in 7:01 which is right where I wanted to be.  Turned onto one of the incredibly steep downhill sections and was passed by a few people.  I wasn't going to kill myself on the downhill so I let them go.  Tried to be smart with the downhill but, in hindsight, I pushed too hard.  Meandered through Bountiful and hit the half in 44:00.  The course flattened out at this point and I started to struggle.  My achilles tendons were killing me and I could feel a blister forming on my left foot.  I think I once heard about not wearing new shoes on raceday.  Apparently this is good advice.  I thought having the fresh cushioning of new shoes would help with the downhill but my foot was slopping around inside the shoe since it hasn't had a chance to form to my foot.  Hit the Legacy Trail at mile 8 and my split was 7:30 and I knew the race was over.  It's hard to overcome that mentally.  Stopped to try and get my foot in a different position in the shoe and it seemed to help the burning.  Once we hit the dirt road in Farmington Bay I could see one runner coming back and another that was not too far away.  I tried to pick up the pace but couldn't get my legs to respond.  I did end up passing one guy but never made up any ground on the other even though his pace had dropped significanlty as well.  Averaged 7:30 ish on the dirt roads.  The absolute worst part of this race is at mile 11 when you make the final turn onto a long straight away.  You can seriously see the finish line for 2 miles.  Ended up finishing 4th overall.  The guy who finished second must not have been a registered runner.  Had I known that, I may have been able to push a little harder and finish 3rd.  If nothing else, I got a few faster paced miles as a workout today.

I have definitely lost what little "edge" I had.  There is absolutely no desire to push once I get a little tired.  I need to be more realistic at the start of races and be a little more conservative.  I am strongly considering dropping out of the Huntsville marathon.  3:15 would be a realistic goal and I'm not sure that is even something that I want to entertain.  I may pace the full marathon at Big Cottonwood on Sept 22 (as a birthday present) instead.  Thoughts/opinions?

My first thought is that you are WAY too hard on yourself. My next few thoughts are all questions:

Compared to your best racing season in the past three or four seasons:

1. How does your training compare?

2. How does your weight compare?

3. How does your nutrition compare?

4. How does your sleep compare?

5. How does your overall health compare?

If there are any discrepancies in favor of the prior season(s) I would chip away at those. Perhaps not all at once, but have a plan and follow it.

If there are no discrepancies in favor of the prior season(s) then I would re-ask the hard questions: "What the H is going on?" Age? Iron-level? Lung capacity changes?

With that said ... I REALLY think you are amazing. I am not just trying to build you up either. I mean it.

First in your age group and 4th overall is NOT shabby. EVEN if there were only 100 runners that still puts you in the top 4%!!!!

From Andy on Sat, Aug 11, 2012 at 15:52:01 from 174.52.172.236

I'm not being hard on myself. Just an honest assessment. My biggest problem is the weight. For the last 2 years, it has been steadily climbing. My best guess is a metabolism slow down when I turned 30. Because of the high weight, I feel like garbage all of the time. Because of this, my mileage has dropped from 60is mpw to 50 mpw. I just lack the desire right now to do the things that need to be done to drop the weight.

Hey Andy - It is hard to keep pumping out high miles and fast marathons/half- marathons. Maybe you need to shake things up a little bit and focus on other race distances for a little while.

I don't know. If you figure it all out, write a book, because a lot of us are in the same boat.

Maybe also go to Costco and buy the 2500 mcg B12 vitamins. Take one 30 minutes before running (dissolves under the tongue). It's like 5 hours of Red Bull energy.

I was a last minute add on for pacing TOU tomorrow. I am pacing 2:00 which I am really hoping I can pull off.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Last minute fill in for the 2 hour pacer at the Top of Utah Half.  The average pace (9:09) is a little slower than I am used to so I was concerned about keeping the pace in check.  Took 3 miles to lock into what it was supposed to feel like.  At that point were were 10 seconds ahead of pace.  Kept that cushion the rest of the way until the last mile when we slowed to encourage the runners just behind us to pass us and beat 2 hours.  Ended up crossing the finish line in exactly 2 hours (actually over shot but 1/10th of a second).  Cooled down with Rachelle, Allie and Kelli for 3 miles.

Saturday night I ran/walked the Sundae Run at This is the Place with Becky and her kids.  Had no intention of participating but decided to hang out with them.  Ended up running quite a bit more than I expected with her daughter.  We probably ran half and walked half.  I skipped the free sundae at the end.  Partly because I didn't pay the entry fee and mostly because I saw a picture of me at the lake.  Holy cow have I put on a lot of weight.  I really need to find the will power to commit to healthier eating.

I've been a faithful Adrenaline wearer for 8 years and I think my feet are finally tired of them so I bought a pair of Lunar Glide's for cheap at Running Warehouse to see if they could be a replacement. They felt a little mushy for the first couple of miles.  I could tell they were putting a little extra strain on my achilles and tibias.  If I can get past the initial adjustment it might be a good thing to work these areas differently.

Another last minute fill in as the 1:35 pacer at Mt. Nebo.  I hesitated to volunteer because my fitness has dropped so much but knew how fast this course was and knew I would be fine.  The race director requested that the pacers be on the first bus at 5:00 a.m. and I didn't want to make Becky leave that early so I ran from the hotel to the bus pickup for a 1.9 mile warmup.  Pretty cold at the starting area which is always a good indication that we would have perfect racing temps. Was pretty much on target until mile 4 when I noticed the mile marker was coming early according to my Garmin.  I remembered from last year that the course measured short.  I was 28 seconds ahead according to the mile markers but right on according to my Garmin.  Tried to give a few seconds back each mile.  Walked all of the aid stations to get closer to goal time.  Was 10-15 seconds ahead going into the last mile and tried to get as close as I could at the finish.  Ended up 6 seconds early which is close enough for me.  Ran alone most of the time as 1:35 is an odd time and this isn't really a big race.  Did have a few people mention that they used me as a target which is probably the biggest job as a pacer.  Becky ran 1:33 which was close to what she ran last year.  She is really rubbing it in that she beat me today.

Based on some of our long run chats, one thing to try is the soda.

I won't get into the whole regular vs. diet soda thing, but I will say this; when my brother in law switched from Dr. Pepper to diet coke, he dropped like 15 pounds. One of the most cherished mantras of the weight loss people is "Don't drink your calories." That might be some low hanging fruit.

Have you ruled out any metabolic/thyroid type problems?

From Smooth on Mon, Sep 24, 2012 at 15:08:12 from 65.130.14.36

I was going to ask about the thyroid thing. I agree on "don't drink your calories". With that said, I think even diet soda is not good for ya. Maynard cut out soda alone and he dropped over 15 lbs.

Happy belated birthday! :)

Hey Andy - first off, happy birthday!

I know what you are saying. I've been fighting the weight the past two years as well. I don't know the answers, but maybe try something new. Throw some biking into the mix. If you work it hard, even a crappy bike can be a killer workout.

I hear that the 40s are A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!!

Just throwing some ideas out there (things that may or may not work for you):

1. Hanging up a picture/poster of a hot guy with a fab body! Seriously ... I always look at pics of hot women and say: "Dang, I want a tummy like that." Perhaps one on the refrigerator (I'm sure Becky would not mind) ... one by the television ... or wherever!!!

2. Pick up a sport that you think is extremely cool even if it scares you to death. For example: mountain biking pushed me completely out of my comfort zone. But it pushed my body differently. Worked muscles that weren't used to be pushed.

3. Get a personal trainer that knows his/her stuff!

Just some ideas!!! :)

(Oh yeah ... and of course, lots of fruits/veggies and water! :))

Hang in there!!! You are one of the coolest guys I know!!! :)

I have seen two such guys recently wearing such apparel. As I worry that something may bust out I'm thinking, "No ... not good." But then I re-think to myself, "Wow ... those must be some confident (or very sick) brothers." Not sure which train of thought was correct. Won an entry into the Haunted Half from Utah Running Guide.  Probably the only reason why I ran this morning.  Knowing my fitness is way off, I decided to run the first couple of miles faster then hang back with Becky for the rest of the run.  Was just behind Tara for the first 2 miles (she was pacing 1:30).  Slowed down and let the 1:35 pacers catch up.  Becky was running with them.  She started to slow and once we hit the uphill section through the U, her knee started causing problems.  She walked the hills and I ran with Bill (1:50 pacer).  At the top of each hill, I wiould stop and wait for her.  Once all of the uphills were done, she was fine and was able to finish well.  I had to make a pit stop at mile 11.5 and really had to work to catch back up to her.  We crossed the finish line at the exact same time (despite her sprint at the end trying to beat me).

Race: Halloween Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:30:17
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
26.200.0026.20

Paced the 4:30 group at the Halloween Full.  I am certainly not in marathon shape but thought running 10:18/mile would be manageable.  Should have paid more attention to the course.  It was tough.  Almost as hard as Sogo.  Started at Sundance and after 3 screaming downhill miles we headed up to Deer Creek.  Lots of fun climbing.  After the turnaround at Deer Creek, we headed back down the canyon to South Fork canyon.  Headed up that for 3 miles.  That was absolutely a killer.  We gave back most of the 1:30 cushion we had built.  The pacing became very difficult from here to the end because the mile markers were either non-existent or placed at strange places.  I don't like to rely on my Garmin while pacing because the mileage isn't reliable, especially in the canyon.  When there were mile markers, we were either 2 minutes ahead or 1 minute behind schedule.  I wasn't sure what to do.  Just maintained our goal pace.  At mile 20 when we went up towards Bridal Veil falls, my pacing buddy started to drop back and I had to let her go.  In hindsight, I ran too slow going up this section.  I locked in 10:18 until mile 24 when I realized that my Garmin was going to measure very long and I was over 1 minute behind.  Made up 20 seconds during mile 24 then pushed as hard as I could the last mile to make up the rest.  Saw Becky and the kids with 0.1 to go and they ran in with me.  Ended up being 17 seconds late but I can live with it considering the mile marker issue.  I'm going to guess that the marathon option will not be offered in the future.  I can't see any benefit to the race director to offer it.  There were only 50 people registered so it was a pretty lonely pacing job.  I was absolutely wiped out at the end.  In more pain than I thought was possible.  Probably couldn't have run much faster if I wanted to.

Another easy 5. Picked the pace up during the last 1/2 mile. Going to stick to the 5 a day until I can get some consistency. Also trying to stop drinking soda. Made it through yesterday and am still alive. I only drink 20 oz/day so it shouldn't be too big of an adjustment.

Not the greatest night of sleep.  My son started a new job at a movie theater and I have a hard time going to sleep until he gets home.  Since Twilight started last night, he didn't get home until 2 a.m.  I forgot how much lack of sleep can have on a run.  Overcame the thoughts in my head telling me to skip the run and just went out at a nice and easy pace.  Ran the last mile a little faster so that I could feel it in my lungs.  I'm not wearing a watch until I get a better base built but I'm sure I would be embarassed of the pace that made my lungs hurt.

Good job Andy. It sounds about like my last leg of Ragnar last week....so dilerious I don't even know how I was moving my body.

So ... how is your soda goal going for you? :)

From Andy on Fri, Nov 16, 2012 at 16:15:53 from 159.212.71.77

I only feel a little fuzzy in the head so I think it is out of my system now. I even had a couple of opportunities that I usually cause me to cave in and opted for water instead. Now I just need to over come the snackiness due to my body craving the extra sugar.

AWESOME!!! :)

Ran the SDRC 5k with my girls.  We focused more on keeping a good consistent pace from start to finish.  One of their soccer teammates was there which I think helped push them a little.  Gracie finished just under 30 and Emma just over.  Not super fast but a well executed race plan.  Started by running from home to the rec center and finished by running back home for a few extra miles.  I was hoping that even though I was running slow with the girls, I could still place in the top 3 of the clydesdale division and take home a pie.  No such luck.  Too many fast fatties.

Andy, I have been following your blog for a long time, don' be so hard on yourself. Down time for a while is good for the soul. Your a talented runner and you will come back, just give yourself some time. Focus on your kids and being a father, for this is where true happiness lives! Hang in there!

I'm trying to learn to swim. You and Teena inspired me to do that! :)

Look forward, not back! You're a good man, Andy! :)

Absolutely perfect morning for a run.  Met Kam at the LPT and ran 11 miles at a comfortable pace.  Well, it was a comfortable pace for him but a bit of a push for me.  Miles just flew by but I knew that I didn't have a lot in me.  Hopefully I didn't hold Kam back too much.

Nice run with Kam on the LPT.  A little colder than last week but less wind.  Felt decent during the run although my breathing was a little more labored than it should have been.  Unintentionally following the 10% rule in my slow build up.

The last day of my worst running year.  I really wish I knew what happened.  It is definitely time for a change.  I'm not sure what I am going to do but need to find something that will motivate me to get me back into shape.  I'm going to step away from the blog for awhile but wanted to express my thanks to the friends that I have made here.

I kept running while enjoying my step away from the blog time. It made me feel like posting again, at least for now. Not sure what my future postings will be. So how about you? Will you be back here?

Regardless, hope all is well.

From Andy on Wed, Apr 17, 2013 at 10:02:57 from 159.212.71.17

Thanks for checking in, Fly. After a short break, I started running regularly again in February. Am up to 45-50 miles per week and have dropped 30 pounds since January. I am back to the same weight I was last year at this time and have 5 more pounds to go. I still poke around the blog but have yet to post since the end of the year. I'm almost feeling like a runner again and will probably start posting soon.
