Running Accomplishments:

I was a much better runner in my 20's and 30's.  When I was 52 I had a 28.5 5K and a 58.5 10K, and I would like to surpass those times.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run a 1/2 marathon.  I would actually love to run a full marathon, but am not sure if my body would break down with injuries training for one.  Update fall 2010: still no 1/2 marathon, but I did run all the way up city creek and back home (14 miles)  - absolutely gorgeous!!

Personal:

My name is Adele Kimbrough - I'm 58 and have been running (off and on) since I was 16.  My body is not well designed for speed, and I'm a bit arthritic, but I'm having fun trying to figure out just how fast I can be.  And this blog helps!

2011 Deseret News 10K Finish Line.
Dang - missed my goal by 4 seconds!

2 short miles with Evy and Suzie, a little past the salt sheds & back.  First day running this year for Evy and me; she is finally recovering from her surgery, and me, well, the scales don't say I've gained any weight after my month off from running, but I'm pretty sure a whole bunch of my muscle has turned to flab!!   Oh, and yea!!! My truck is finally funning again!!!

Missed the bus afterward work and decided to walk/run home.  Smoggy dirty air, with yucky car exhaust and slick sidewalks in places.  My ears were cold, I was wearing dress slack & dansco shoes & heavy coat.  Whew! Was hard because I'm out of shape and it was uphill, but I'm glad I did it. :)

Ran up to the city creek 1 mile marker and back. Boy, my legs feel like real clunkers, that's what I get for not running regularly.  I'm sure if I can run regularly for a couple weeks my gait will feel a lot smoother.  Glad I got out even if it was pretty smoggy; I could taste it, but didn't really want to run inside on the TM.  (Actually the TM is buried under a couple other items right now . . . will have to remedy that. . . )

No running miles, but I did have a nice hike at Alta with some Wasatch Mountain Club friends.  Lots & lots of snow still up there which made it nice and cool, but it also made us keep changing our destination because of impassable conditions.  Our fearless mountain goat leader Steve finally got us up to the ridgeline between big and little cottonwood canyons with the plan of hiking down to the Prince of Wales mine, but we were again stymied with a steep snow field. We finally had to call it quits but still enjoyed a gorgeous view of far off mountains from the ridgeline.

Did a good set of shoulder stretches in the morning, and did my strengthening exercises in the evening.  But I think I was a little too ambitious and tweaked something because my shoulder started hurting in some strange places.

Nice early morning hike with my son to the Broads Fork beaver pond in Big Cottonwood Canyon.  Great day for hiking - overcast with a faint drizzling of rain from time to time.  Wild flowers starting to come and should be in full bloom in 2-3 weeks. ~6 miles out & back and ~2400 feet climbing.

Evening: slow 3 mile run to city creek gate and back.

Okay, off to shower and finish my shoulder stretches and exercises for the day.  My shoulder is getting better ROM and strength, but its also starting to hurt a bit more through out the day - don't know if it's because I've been pushing it pretty hard with my home pt or if the cortisone injection is starting to wear off.

By the time I was ready to run today it was 11 & hot & sunny.  I could probably have handled the heat, but since I scorched my chest and arms on a hike over the weekend no way did I want to be in the sun for an hour.  So I did the most dreadful thing I could think of and cleared the junk off my treadmill, dusted it off, and gave it a whirl!  It was nice listening to music for a change, but it wasn't so nice to see how much I have slowed down since last year!!  Anyhow, I mixed some faster paced running with some slower paced running and took a couple short breaks to move my water sprinklers around.  Better go shower and stretch now.

Hi Tracy - it's good to be back! I dislocated my shoulder in January; it healed poorly causing lots of problems and then froze up in May. I got a cortisone injection and have been doing pretty intensive pt and it's much much better but I don't know if I'll ever get my full range of motion back. (keeping fingers crossed!). Oh, I really enjoyed the "photo" blog of you, Burt, Carolyn, April & all the cute kids!!!!

Hi Adam, yes, I've managed to increase my running to over 20 miles per week again (much better than the 10 miles per month I averaged the first five months of this year...). Congratulations on your grant - that's great news! Where's the faculty interview?

Morning run from home to city creek pa8 and back.  One of my neighbors was out running in city creek this morning, too, and we ended up running the last mile or so together.  This made for a great work out for me because it was all uphill and he is much faster and I was huffin' and puffin' pretty hard to keep up.  Plus, I was pushing the pace a bit before that point because I knew he was somewhere behind me and I was trying to get home before he caught me!

Much cooler than yesterday with a nice cloud cover!

Hey ho, though, just went to my orthopedics doc today for my shoulder follow up.  He's real happy with how I've progressed and has given me the green light to do whatever I want!!  :)   I'm still hesitant to go trail running, though, because I'm a klutz and fall at least 2-3 times each year on trails, but I am getting tempted by that nice shady trail that parallels the city creek road!!   o&o

A klutz??? Uh oh, klutz and trail scare me when worded together! Actually the word TRAIL just scares me!

I was thinking today that I need to go run City Creek, it has been a while! I think I may have to talk my hubby into it for next weekend. It is so nice and shady!

Glad you are well!!!

Hi Kelli,

Yep, you definitely need to go for a run in City Creek - rushing water, chirping birds, cool shade, lots of water fountains, ummm it's good for all that ails you!

From Kelli on Fri, Jul 15, 2011 at 23:47:43 from 71.219.99.3

I was thinking I would talk my husband in to it next weekend, but he has scout camp. The following weekend he will be in St George. So, I guess I will have to wait until August. Maybe i can talk my running group into going again! I do not dare run there alone!!!

From CookieLegs on Sat, Jul 16, 2011 at 01:25:45 from 71.32.239.13

Sure you can run there alone!!! City Creek is about the most marvelous place in the world to run!!! I could meet you there, but you'd dust me after about 100 yards. But ... you could run solo all the way to the top, turn around and run back down, and when we saw each other again I could finally turn around and you could dust me a second time! :)

But, if ya don't want to run city creek solo, yep, you better get your running group to come!

From Kelli on Sat, Jul 16, 2011 at 15:04:00 from 71.219.99.3

I am paranoid to run alone when i am surrounded by trees!!! Anyone could grab me and I would be too tired to run away!

I would not dust ya, I can run ALL speeds!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
1.756.258.00

Seriously need to work on increasing my speed, and since I tend to loaf along smelling the roses when I run city creek I decided to run on my TM.  Warmed up 3/4 mile, then ran a bunch of tempo'ish miles that were punctuated with cursory pit stops and water breaks, then ran about 3/4 mile cool down.  Not a great speed work out (especially considering all the breaks), but the tempo pace did force me to breath harder than usual.  It's a bummer that my tempo pace is a minute+ slower than last year!!

I better go stretch & do my shoulder stuff now because I have a lot of chores to do today.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Oh gheesh - I missed my goal of 60 minutes by 4.3 seconds!  On the positive side I was ~ 30 seconds faster than last year (I was in much better shape last year, but sorely lacked motivation to push last year and just kind of leisurely ran along.)  I injured my shoulder badly a few months ago and only started running in earnest again about 5 weeks ago.  Since I didn't have much time to prepare, I figured I would consider this 10K a success if I put my heart into it. And for the most part I did. :)

So how did it unfold?

Well, I planned to have a nice dinner last night, get my stuff ready, and get a good night's rest.  But my daughter's friend called at the last minute and offered us free VIP tickets to the Steve Miller Band concert at Red Butte Garden. Really!!!  I couldn't resist, so with about 10 minutes notice we were out the door to go to the concert. The concert was a blast!! The guitar playing was absolutely awesome, and the keyboardist was really rocking, and so we got up and danced, danced, danced for a couple hours!  Lotza fun!  By the time it was over, I was really pumped and wishing I could run the 10K at 11:00 at night!

That was a no go, of course, so I just had to hope that the music magic (madness?) would carry over into the next day.  Got home late, got my clothes ready, went to bed around 12:30, and fell asleep around 1 am.  I did not appreciate my alarm going off at 4:30 am!!!  Finally managed to struggle out of bed to get dressed, suck down some coffee and pnb & honey toast, and head out the door. Parked at the university and did a slow 1/8 mile jog to the start (it would've been smart to do a longer warm up and throw in some strides, but ...)

Que'd up about a minute and a half back from the start, and then we were off.  The first 1-2 minutes were pretty slow as my body was protesting quite a lot (really should have done some warm up strides!), but I finally kicked into a good pace going down hill on Wakara Way. And, it felt REALLY GOOD to run fast!!! For about two miles anyway . . . then I'm not sure how fast I was running any more, but I was certainly breathing hard, so I felt good about my effort. My mouth was pretty parched so I walked a few seconds and drank water at the 1st water stop, then took off at a hard effort again.  I probably slowed a bit because it seemed forever to get to where South Temple turns onto 200 East).

I was feeling the pain on 200 East and it took forever to get to the second water stop.  The second water stop was pretty funny; I took a quick sip then dumped the rest of the cup and a second cup of water on my head.  The runner ahead did the same thing, or at least tried to; but when he went to throw the cup of water on his head, he missed and splashed it all over the very shocked volunteer's face! (I shouldn't laugh, but it was funny!)

Then it was around the corner onto the home stretch along 900 South, and mercifully the sun wasn't beating down on me. This has always been a hard section for me, but I actually pushed pretty darn hard on this stretch, remembering to run with short quick strides, and then it was through the finish line. I felt pretty crummy afterwards & didn't even want any water; good indication that I pushed hard.  But, dang, missed my goal by 4.3 seconds!  Wish I'd looked at my watch, but dumb me, I forgot! (That's what happens when you only run with a watch 3 times a year!)

Afterwards Evy and I watched the first 4 marathoners finish, then walked back to South Temple and cheered on a whole bunch of mid-pack marathoners.  We were really clapping and whooping and hollering at them, and that was fun! Then we walked up to my house on 12th Avenue so Evy could shuttle me back to get my car at the University.

Okay, I feel good about my effort today, but I KNOW I can run a faster time.  All it takes is lots of consistent running - all year long, not for just a few short weeks!

Yea, I'm not scared of spooks on dark canopied covered trails, but I am scared of dark shadowy dogs-like shapes I see in the distance!

No running, but I went on a nice hour long bike ride around terrace hill sports fields, down into memory grove, up to city creek gate, and back home.  Nice ride - got me huffin & puffin - seems to use different muscles than running! ;)  Did my shoulder stuff :) :)

Morning: 4 mile run to city creek pa 4 & back. Need to leave town for a couple days & wanted at least a short run before leaving.

Late Evening: 4 mile run to city creek pa 4 & back. After 3 days of eating lotza high calorie food in Idaho and no exercise I really needed to run, even if it was a short run.

Just after I got to the intersection of 11th Avenue and the one way road that leads down towards city creek I came across a car coming the WRONG WAY up the road in the bycycle/pedestrian/runner lane.  Now this always pisses me off because it is quite dangerous for the bike riders, walkers & runners, especially with night coming on, and I always make people turn around and go the proper direction even if it is the LONG WAY.  This particular wealthy looking gentleman in his sports car with his fancy girlfriend did not want to turn around, but since I was standing in the middle of the lane with my arms spread eagle, I seemed to hold the upper edge.  We discussed the situation for about 3 minutes (convertibles make for easy conversation), with him wanting me to get out of his way, and with me planting my sweaty greasy hands on the hood of his nice car so I had something comfy to lean on while I argued my case.  Come on he said "it's just 15 more yards to the intersection", I said "nope, you gotta turn around".  He said "you know it's a two way street", I said "nope it isn't, you gotta turn around".  He said "okay move out of the way & I'll turn around"; I said "nope, you back up to turn around" (I was NOT going to get out of his way!)  So he finally backed up to turn around and drove back down the proper direction.  By that time a lot of people had been walking up the hill and congratulated me for making him turn around because they were mad at him as well for driving in the "no-car" lane.

So that was interesting, but other than that the run was kind of crappy because I had just driven 400+ miles, was in a bad mood because I took a wrong turn earlier that day that added over 40 miles to the trip (#$&#@!), had just wolfed down a roast beef sandwich and whole bunch of cantalope for dinner, and had a heavy stomach and heavy clunky legs to go with it.  Also I'm still coughing up a bunch of crap from my lungs, but at least I'm coughing a lot less than last week.

Oh, I had a real good time visiting friends up in Idaho and eating See's Chocolate Candy!  :)

Sorry about the cough. The air quality has not been that fantastic lately. I hope all is going well.

Thanks Adam. I've been having a busy summer and have been enjoying running in city creek. Hope you're also having a good summer with your kids and running. I miss all the people in Eccles Building, tho. Has Renata (sp?) had her baby yet?

From Adam RW on Fri, Aug 19, 2011 at 09:06:00 from 155.101.152.123

Glad to hear you have kept busy and have enjoyed City Creek. With all my commute runs this year I have not made it over there as often as I would have liked. No Renata is still pregnant but ready to go. Official due date this upcoming Monday. Sihem is also now very pregnant and will have her second daughter in about a month or so.

Busy day helping my daughter move in to college, then running lots of errands with my son.  Ran on treadmill between committments, and it wasn't too bad because I had music :) and played with the speed control on the TM :)

Burt, you should know that I am a real pansy and just like to complain sometimes! Compared to the hot weather you must experience I should really count my blessings! (PS: if I weren't such a time waster I'd get out running earlier than I do . . . )

Hike to Hogum Ridge

No running, so I can't put any running mileage, but I tell you, the effort was immense and the hike lasted 8 hours.  I'm guessing 10-12 miles round trip, very steep slopes at times, lots of scrambling through humongous bolder fields, and scrambling along Hogum Ridge (can't forget the fear factor of scrambling here because the ridge was quite exposed in places).  The effort was hard but doable at the time, but my quads got quite the work out and were way sore for 4 days afterwards!  This was an absolutely awesome hike, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!!

Upper hip has been bugging me lately so I thought I would try the treadmill instead of my usual city creek run.  Hip still hurt while running, but didn't seem to hurt as much as it does when I run outside.  5 miles @ 1.5 incline, with the middle 3 being somewhat tempo pace @ 6 mph.

Probably the best thing I can do for my hip is to start stretching after running again - I've been bad at that . . .

Oh, I did my arm strengthening exercises this morning. :)  (First time in a week - I'd kind of fallen out of that routine, too.)

Really hoping to get a good routine going again; having my kids switch from summer vacation to school and having Labor Day thrown in there always seems to throw all my plans out the window!

Mini progression run on tm.  Still have a sore hip, but I bought some new shoes in case it helps! Slowly ramped up for warm up then 1 miles @ 5.5 mph 1.5% incline, then 1 mile, 5.7 mph 1.5% incline, then got a pain in my butt & suffered thru another 1/2 mile before stopping.  Stretched well afterwards.

2.5 slow miles, and boy were they slow!!!!!!! Never got over 1.5% incline & 5 mph, but the good news was the sharp pain in my butt was absent while running, so hopefully it won't return and I can start running regularly again.  Hip pain hasn't been too bad lately, so I'll keep my fingers crossed on that as well. I ran in my new shoes :)

Also stretched good afterwards.
Did my full arm exercises afterwards.
Even did some real simple abdomen strengthening exercises. (have to start somewhere...)

3.5 slow miles, still slow, but a little faster than yesterday, and a mile further. Long middle stretch at 1% incline and 5.5 mph.  Good news (knock on wood!) no sharp jabbing pain in my butt while running. :)  Hip pain isn't too bad, either, hopefully new shoes & stretching has been helping everything.  Still keeping fingers crossed, meanwhile I will ramp things up (speed, incline, & distance) very slowly.

Also stretched good afterwards.
Did my full arm exercises afterwards.
Still need to do my simple abdomen strengthening exercises but need to get ready to meet Evy first.
