Great morning at the Highland track.

Warmed up 1.9 miles around Sugarhouse and headed over to the OktoberFAST 5k. The race started a couple of minutes after 9.  It was fun to meet and chat with several fellow bloggers.  They're even cooler and  nicer in person than they are on the blog.

I had never run a 5k on the track prior to this so I wasn't sure exactly how I'd do but I realized when I arrived that I didn't have my watch so I'd just run by feel and not worry too much about keeping a certain pace.

I started with Chad Robinson, he was nice enough to tell me 400m splits for the first 1600m.   We went 78, 85, 85, 88 if I remember correctly.  The first 3 were fine by me but I felt like I'd kick myself later in the day for not giving a better effort if I kept the pace at 88 seconds per 400m.

I picked it back up again and was running by myself. I had no idea what my splits were but was feeling pretty good. I got lapped by Jake somewhere around lap 7 which was actually motivating.

I caught up to AdamRW who started very aggressive but was having a harder time closing the distance on Andrea.  She's one tough chick!  I was slowly gaining ground on her but didn't actually reach her until about 350 meters to go, I finished fairly strong and was lucky to hold her off.  All in all I was pretty satisfied, I may have saved too much for the end but it's tough to know.  More races and trackwork will give me a better idea of race strategy and my strengths and weaknesses.

Post race pictures and chocolate milk.  I felt like I should have paid some sort of entry fee.  I also got a nice bright orange Saucony bag.  Thanks Jake and Andrea! Also, thanks to Allie for being the photographer. It was a great workout for me and fun to meet you all.

nice race this morning. it was fun watching your progression with each lap as you moved into a faster pace and got into "serious" mode. you were really strong in those final laps -- lots of speed in those legs!

it was nice meeting you this morning.

Very cool Acorn. Keep up the great work it's really going to pay dividends.

Adam, It was great to meet you. Even if only briefly. You ran a good race, especially for your first track 5K. I look forward to seeing what you will do next time. I'm sure sub-17 I'm just curious by how much...

From Jake K on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 15:32:04 from 67.177.21.60

Adam, great meeting you today. Really glad you came out. Way to drop the hammer in those last couple laps. You have a ton of potential... keep at it and I really think you can be a sub 16 5Ker and run the mile in the 420s.

From Andrea on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 15:35:15 from 67.177.21.60

Jake was definitely raving about your potential when we got home :) Great race, glad you were able to come out. We should plan some runs together, especially since you live so close!

I am so glad you beat Andrea. I mean, can you imagine losing to a girl? I can't. (She's not going to see this, is she?) Way to go!

From Andrea on Sat, Oct 01, 2011 at 18:34:37 from 67.177.21.60

Thanks Burt, really. I'm already planning our trip to Phoenix soon; can't wait to race you!

My hometown. My rules. We run. Then we drink a gallon of chocolate milk. Whoever finishes first, wins.

Good lord I want to book tickets on Southwest right now for this epic showdown. You dont realize how much chocolate milk Andrea can drink! I guess we should invite ACorn too since this whole thing started on his blog...

That is smokin' fast, nice job! Racing a 5k on the track sounds both terrible and intriguing at the same time.

From Kam on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 02:08:18 from 174.23.234.224

SlowJoe, it was kind of horrible, other than the great times and company.

It was great meeting you Adam and fantastic race. I'm glad I could provide you with a relaxing first mile. I take personal responsibility for your finishing kick.

Way to race out there! Looks like part ii is going to be in Phoenix?

From ACorn on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 18:29:43 from 24.2.76.146

Burt-

You are a very brave man to challenge Andrea. I wouldn't do it and I don't see the chocolate milk challenge ending well for anyone.

Flat-

I'd head to Phoenix for part ii only if there's golf involved.

From Jacob Flaws on Sun, Oct 02, 2011 at 19:57:19 from 173.29.149.105

Great race man! Sometimes not having a watch is for the better, that way u just run by feel! Keep pushing towards that 16 barrier
