Long-Term Running Goals:

Worship the Lord and praying early in the mornibgs and keep doing that. Staying humble and desperate for the Lord and praying for end-time revival for America.

My Long Term goal is to just run whatever I can.

When I got up for the marathon this morning about 3am my wife and I had a great devotion (she got up with me). The scripture was perfect for today's event and I kept quoting them through the whole race.

Isaiah: 41:13 - For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

Isaiah 35:3 - Strengthen the weak hands, And make firm the feeble knees.

Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength they shall mount up with wings as eagles they shall run and not be weary [and] they shall walk and not faint.

These scriptures helped in the race.

I rode the bus with Jeff Shadley, Walter, Bill and we had a good conservation on the way up to the start. It was nice being with friends and enjoy the time before the start, and seeing other blogger's as well.

The plan was to run a 2:35 with Jeff and Walter, but I wasn't sure if I was ready for that since I had an Achillies injury 7-8 weeks ago. I originally thought I would do a 2:45, because of the lack of speed work. I had the endurance putting in two 100 mile weeks and three 90 mile weeks leading up to the taper. But also thinking this was my first marathon of the year, and 2:45 was a good goal to pursue. But, Jeff gave me confidence and I decided to go out to achieve a 2:35.

When the race started my legs felt dead and heavy for some reason and right off the bat I fell behind Jeff and Walter. I felt this way for the first couple of Miles.

Mile 1: (6:20)

(uphill mostly)-

Not feeling the energy in the legs.  I guess a warm-up would have been good.

Mile 2: (5:49)

(downhill mostly) -

Again, I do the same thing where I always fall behind the runners I'm trying to pace with.

Mile 3: (6:03)

(Rolling Downward) -

started running with a guy in his first marathon who finished at either a 2:46 or 2:49. Jeff and Walter are pulling further ahead. No chance for me to run with them at this point.

Miles 4-6: (5:52, 6:07 5:44)

(Rolling Downward the uphill Mile 6 Downhill) -

my legs started to loosen up a bit and not feel as heavy. I'm not sure why they were so dead. One reason could be because of no warm-up. Jeff and Walter at this point pulled even further ahead.

Miles 7-9: (5:42, 5:48, 5:54)

(Downhill)-

Legs seemed to have kicked in gear, but I could have pushed harder but felt I should be a little conservative considering I didn't know what my body might do. I took a Powergel at mile 9 and that was a booster.

Miles 10-12 (5:53, 6:07, 5;59)

(Mile 10 Flattens, Mile 11 mild uphill and Mile 12 mild uphill)-

I'll I can remember about these miles is the sharp turn at mile 11, and I was still feeling good. The legs were reacting well on the course and I was trying to get some kind of groove going.

Miles 13 (5:59)

(mild uphill)-

Finished the half at 1:18ish. The goal for a 2:35 was 1:17, but I didn't care at this point because of the way I felt at the start.

Miles 14 (5:55) 

(Partially downhill, but really good downhill, many turns. )-

I took a wrong turn here and lost 15 seconds and it seem to knock my thinking a bit because of that. But I reversed the thinking and thought of the scriptures from this morning and started quoting them. I also thought of my family at the finish line.

Miles 15-17 (6:07, 6:02, 6:14)

(mainly flat with short ups and downs and turns)-

Took another Gel at Mile 14 and a half, but there was no one at the aid station to wash it down at mile 15. For some reason they were down the road a bit from the cups. I wasn't too pleased, but I started quoting the scriptures again. I also started to see Jeff at this point and Walter I guess ducked into the portable bathroom which I had know idea until a while later. My goal was to get up with Jeff to pace together. A lot of turning in the course at this point. This was really a tough course I thought with all the turns.

Miles 18-20 (6;14, 6:11, 6:28)

(Mile 18: flat with turns.  Mile 19 flat with some short up and down and turning.  Mile 20 flat)-

at this point I was getting closer to Jeff. I really hated this part of the course with all the tunnels and sharp turns. It really just destroyed a consistent pace for me. I thought some of these were just a weird layout for a course and was really shocked and surprise and through me off-guard at times. But instead of thinking negative I started quoting the scriptures from this morning again. Mile 20 was flat and you started heading straight towards the downtown mall.

Miles 21 -23 (6:29, 6:31, 6:32)

(All miles flat)-

This was straight and reminded me of the last 6 miles of the Pocatello Marathon course. I caught Jeff I believe around mile 22 (Jeff let me know if I'm wrong). I wanted to pace with him so I took the lead hoping he would follow my back. But it didn't happen.

Miles 23-26 (6:32, 6:29, 6:27, 6:20)

(flat - last mile some uphill and downhill)-

Here I was basically just giving what I had left and cruised in to the finish.

Tough second half for this course. The downhill wasn't what I expected from looking at the elevation chart (but when are they ever accurate).

Pre Breakfast Marathon Meal:

Banana

Coffee with Cream and Equal sugar, and Torani Sugar free Vanilla Syrup (clean pipes out).

Special K Bar Strawberry (90 Calories).

Few bits of a bagel.

Up at the start about 20 minutes before I had 3 sports beans.

I just got home from Salt Lake City where we stayed the night last night (about 3:40pm). My legs feel good and I'm glad to be home. We took the kids to Hogo Zoo with Jeff Shadley and his family.

We had a great time with them and enjoyed each others family.

Josse - The sharp turns really kicked your pace down. I really thought that was a bad course move. I've never ran a marathon where you have to turn so much.

Holt - Thanks. Nothing compared to what you accomplished last week. Nice work again.

Redrooster - thanks it wasn't what I expected.

Adam RW - I really was on my own the whole race running. I didn't pace with no one. Jeff and Walter were gone from the start. Just like you in SLC last year. I'm a horrible person to run with.

Jon - I realized it was my slowest split when I looked at the totals. I think I could have ran the last three miles faster, but I didn't want to burn out the last mile.

Maurine/Tarzan - Definitely different than what I expected for the second half.

Ben - Thanks your time is coming.

Little Bad Legs - Thanks I tried my best I thought.

Dave S. - Thanks

Walter - I didn't even know you were behind me. You need to teach me how to start better, because I'm an awful pacer with others. Jeff and you looked good and I just couldn't keep that pace for some reason. I should have been able to. But you had a good race considering all you endured before the race. Don't we wish we all could be like Ryan Hall. It was awesome to see you again. I really enjoy your company.

Nice running, Kory. I'm glad you are healthy again after some difficult injuries. And it seems 2:40 on that course seems quite solid. I think any time you can come within 5 minutes of a marathon goal it's a pretty darn successful outing. My opinion -- for what it's worth! -- is that you could shoot for sub-2:30 at St. George if you go back there in the fall.

How do you like the Brooks Adrenalin? I've raced mostly in Brooks flats for several years and might switch to Brooks trainers. That is, when/if I am able to race again!

The Brooks Adrenaline are good shoes. I wouldn't run a marathon in them because their too heavy. But they are a good trainer. I've never tried the Brooks Flats. The Brooks Axiom are lighter and I like them too. But To me they are still too heavy for a marathon shoe.

Since he's one of my bitter rivals on Athlinks.com I just looked him up real quick. He's only 30. I was way off. Way back in the annals of my mind I remember Walter teasing him about his age. But maybe it was Jon teasing Jeff about becoming a master. And somehow I always think Walter lives further north near Logan. I'll get you guys straight some day. By flats I meant racing flats (Brooks T4 Racer being my favorite -- it's now updated to the T6 which I haven't tried). I wouldn't use the Adrenaline for racing -- I should have said "if/when I'm able to run seriously again" as I'm stll battling injury. I'm running some but not at a very high level.

Kory - good scriptures, and a good race. Do you think the course is faster than Pocatello? Also, are your splits from Garmin or the mile marks?

Burt - if you want to reach your potential, stop worrying about age. What I've noticed overtime - good runners just race. Not so good worry about what age division their competitor is in. Age is somewhat of a factor after 40. Before that it is just an excuse. Age divisions prior to 40 do a disservice to our sport, I wish the money wielding majority of the runners would realize it sufficiently to where the race directors would stop bending to this age-division racing mindset.

Sasha - The split are from the Garmin not the Mile Marks. The last 6 miles of the Provo Marathon course remind me of Pocatello's except Pocatello has less turns.

The faster course would be difficult to know. Pocatello you do have more downhill in the first 13 miles, but then you have the hilly section that can be tough. What might make it faster is less turns than Provo.

Sasha - I've never thought about age divisions in that light. But if we are to divide up into categories, is there a better way to do it? To some extent there is another division with the Athenas and Clydesdales, but they're all thrown into the same category. So, age, weight, gender, fitness level, combinations of any of the above? Or no categories at all? I like age divisions for the sole fact of seeing how other people my age compare to me. I once won my age division in a race with 300 participants, and thought it was cool that I also beat everyone from age 30 to 52.

Burt - not a whole lot of meaningful options for evaluating a performance except time and overall place in a representative field, unfortunately. In lieu of good performance evaluation standards you have to invent your own. Sub-50:00 10 K, sub-45:00 10 K, sub-40:00 10 K, sub-35:00 10 K, etc, maybe finer granularity than 5 minutes in between once you are under 40:00. Maybe we should step up and create our own ranking system with performance standards at all levels. Go ahead and propose a name for those categories. I can write some code that will generate a PDF of certificate that you can print and frame.

Burt- bitter rivals? Oh, I just looked and I guess we are on Athlinks. Though I think it's funny you thought I was older. I'm sure I teased both Walter and Shadley about their age, and I imagine they might have teased me about turning 30.

We keep bugging Walter to move to Logan- he's a semi-adopted member of the FRB-Logan chapter, anyways. Maybe you should move to Logan, too!
