I didn't get as much sleep as I would have liked last night, but it was my fault.  My wife and I got new Blackberry Smartphones yesterday, because our current cell phones were no longer covered under insurance, and our two year contact at Alltel was expiring.  We purchased the Blackberry 8830 world edition.  Last night I was trying to configure my wife's bluetooth headset up to it and I stayed up late doing so.  My wireless headset paired up fine (different brand of headset than my wife's). Anyway, staying up till 11:30pm only allowed me a little over 6 hours of sleep.

The weather this morning was 35 degrees with a 20mph wind.  The wind here just will not let up.  According to the weather were suppose to get 50mph wind gusts this afternoon.  SLC is also getting the wind too.

I decided to do two MP miles on the downhill and flat part of the course I was running this morning.  First I had to go up the standard Satterfield hill that I run once a week.  The beginning splits were (7:28, 7:02, 7:02, 7:00, 7:12, 6:55).  This hill makes my quads burn every time once I get to the top. Then the MP miles

Mile 7:  5:41 - All downhill the effort was easy even with the headwind, but it was downhill and it was only one mile.  But it felt good.

Mile 8: 5:38  - Mostly flat and downhill.  If felt pretty comfortable pushing on the flat to keep the average..

Here's the challenge I have for myself this weekend, can I average below a 6 minute mile pace for the whole 26.2?  Can I consistently hit the mile targets that Adam as set for us, and keep up?  I do feel pressure, but that's good, sometimes you need pressure to see if your capable of working out of a tense situation.

The next three days I'm going to take it easy and only run around 5 each day, and maybe even take the dog out with me.

Nice splits and it is great that they felt comfortable.

Not too bad other than I would have liked to run one more on a slight ascent or completely flat. The wind here is awful. We have a weather advisory till late this afternoon of winds up in there 50mph. I hope your day is going well.

What we should do is stick together for the first three miles at around 5:50 pace. I am planning to run a conservative effort with about 2:30 target adjusted for the conditions. After that depending on the race situation, and how I am feeling I might press a bit harder. After that, work together with Adam. Dave Holt may be feeling better than he thinks, in which case he will go with me, or if not, it would be nice for him to hang around longer and work with you as well.

The first half is hilly, and it is OK to run it as slow as 1:19 in ideal conditions, you would still have a shot at 2:35. Always adjust for the conditions. If you are fit to run 2:35 in ideal conditions, the weather makes it 2:38, you will run 2:41 or slower if you insist on running 2:35 regardless.

You will not believe this but it is currently snowing!!! here in SLC...

Adam - That's just not in our favor. Maybe our strategy goal is going to have to change if it doesn't clear out. The wind/elements if you do try to push the first half will really zap the energy, and the second half could be an adventure. The weather does say the low is going to be 41 degrees with a high of 65 degrees on Saturday, and partly cloudy with 16mph winds at SSW direction.

Sasha - sounds like a good plan if the weather conditions are not in our favor. I guess we wait and see and not jump the gun. But I'll stick with what Adam wants to do.

Kory - If there's anyone on this blog that possesses the determination and talent that is necessary for averaging sub 6:00 pace, I think you would be one of the first that comes to mind. You've shown your grit and determination in the Del Sol and forcing yourself to self treat an achilles issue. And I don't think there was one point during the winter where you just gave up and called it quits. You work hard and treat your training just as you would your job, and there is no doubt in my mind that you can hit your goal. Don't let the weather throw your drive to succeed. I agree with Sasha that it would better suit your goals to run with the course and conditions rather than against it. No sense in forcing a 5:59 mile and using energy on an uphill that you will need or can use to your advantage on a flat or downhill mile later in the race. From what I've read on people's race reports, it's very difficult and only a small percentage of people can maintain an even pace on a marathon course... and often those people are not the fast guys out there. When you are running at a level that you are at right now, I think an overall time goal should be something to shoot for. I wish you all the best this weekend, and I am anxiously awaiting that race report! Slice and dice 'em and take no prisoners!
