I ran 11.10 miles at a 7:20 pace in 1:21 on a cold chilly morning at 20 degrees again, but there was no wind which was good.   I went up Buckskin Rd.  than over Hospital Way then down Jefferson st. and then I turned on Wayne St. then back to Yellowstone St then down back home on Mckinley St.  Very good hilly route.  I did pickup miles on the downhills but only a 6:13 pace for one of the miles then a 6:57.  Just ran by feel, as far as speed work goes I haven't done any to prepare for next week's Half Marathon.  Oh well maybe I can get some in tomorrow.

Really don't care what I run the Half Marathon in... I may run it for fun and pace my friend Barry to PR at 1:30.  I'm not sure yet.  The batteries for training right now are not charged.  I just want to run to run.

After two marathons in such a short time I'm not too surprised about the "low batteries" do the pacing it is a lot of fun if you can control yourself... Michelle was my first good pacing experience, the only other time I tried it (a recreational runner HS friend of mine) I got too antsy and asked him if I could go ahead after only one mile. In either case continue to have fun with it. Way to stick out the cold this morning...

Kory, we ran in mid 60's temps this week and I felt like I was almost cold. I can't imagine 20 degree running at this time of year, bless you. Keep up your recovery from so much racing. Elite runners like you deserve some rest too. Enjoy, Paul

Kory, On the Pikes Peak Message Board there is a thread discussing how much rest should a serious runner from Pikes Peak take after the race. See the link: http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/board.asp In the middle of the responses, Matt Carpenter (who wins Pikes Peak every year he races) gives his guidance, see below. Actually, “the book” says that the 3 months after the Pikes Peak races we (the Incline Club) use to recharge our batteries so that come November we can start the process all over again. Since the club has no workouts scheduled during this time for some it means time off. Others do easy runs or cross training. It does however, recommend not to do hard training during this time. It points out that the people in the club who have the most disappointing seasons are often the ones that thought they could get ahead by working hard through the off season. Take that for what it is worth. As for John, it should be pointed out that his stated goal was to run a Wave 1 time = < 4:15. He trained his butt off and made all 60 Incline Club workouts and did just that. He went from a 4:21 last year to a 3:57 this year – never mind the conditions. He deserves his down time!

Thanks Paul!

I think your right. My ultimate plan is to probably not run another marathon until April and try for a 2:30 and under.

Once I achieve that I want to retire or quit trying to compete at an elite level and just run for fitness. I've put serious miles in the last three years, and I don't want to risk getting hurt and crippled by the constant pounding and trying to perform my very best. This next year will be my last serious year I think.

Kory, impressive for your planning. You have achieved so much and if you get deep recovery for a while and then focus on this next year for your PR's, by then you have proved everything you need to prove. Then your running is for the love of running. You could explore fun marathons like Pikes Peak, what a thrill, while your family shops in Manitou Springs. Best wishes, Paul
