Ran 1.35 miles on the treadmill in pain.  Doctor's appointment today at 10:30am.

Doctor Update:

No Stress Fracture.!  My bones and structure all look great according to the X-Rays.  I have a little inflammation in the Achillies Tendon with a little lump.  Basically, it's Achillies Tendonitis.   I need to do the cold/warm/cold treatment once or twice a day.  I need to at least take 600 grams of Tylenol, or whatever flavor.  He did put heel lifts in my shoes to help relieve the pressure from the Achillies.  He said I can still run but to cut back.   Although, it's hard to run in pain so I might  run 3 miles a day or take some time off.

Hope you find something conclusive out with the Doc. STOP RUNNING if it hurts so bad!

From Jon on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 11:35:14 from 138.64.2.76

I'm hoping the doc tells you to take a month off or something, so that you will actually be able to heal and run pain free!

From barry on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 14:49:14 from 75.174.5.124

I am glad that it is not a stress fracture! I would almost suggest taking 800 MG of Ibuprofen. Do you have to wear the heal lifts all the time? Do you think it will help you?

From wheakory on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 15:38:28 from 24.116.153.110

Barry - I actually did take 800 grams. I don't know about the heal lifts yet. I really think this all came about, because of wearing too old or wore out shoes.

I will just cut the running back. Like instead of running 10 miles a day run 5 a day, but still do the normal week long run.

Kory,

Glad it's nothing more serious. However, I once had an achilles strain in college and know the pain can be quite sharp. Spent an entire season in the training room playing through the injury (position was catcher) and finally let it heal over the summer. Fortunately, I've never had a problem with it since (of course I've never run 100 miles in a week or won a marathon either). Must be great to get a diagnosis and with a little caution, hopefully you'll return to 100% soon.

From wheakory on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 17:19:52 from 134.50.89.55

Rockness18 - How did you let it heal? Did you just not play sports or cutback? I'm trying to figure out if I should just cutback or take a week off. Advice would be great?

I really do praise God that it's nothing serious, other than achillies pain does hurt pretty bad.

Although, I can rejoice because look at the persecution Paul/Job had to go through. This is just a speck of dust compared to what they went through in the bible.

From rockness18 on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 21:01:31 from 75.16.162.226

Kory,

I'm probably not the best person for advice. At that stage in my life, I did very little distance running. However, I took time off from baseball that summer (squating as a catcher was stretching the achilles) and I held back on pick-up b-ball. Also, I was like a gym rat with cross-training- mostly weights and good diet. Visits to the training room included ultrasound and ice...not sure how much it actually helped, but that alway seemed to be the prescribed treatment. For me, I think it wasn't going to heal until I took time off from catching...that's what first caused the pain.

From Jon on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 22:13:53 from 75.169.138.168

Kory- did the doctor say it would heal faster if you totally stopped running for a little while?

From wheakory on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 22:29:24 from 24.116.159.75

Jon - In a round about way he said that. He said that you don't want to make the inflammation around the achillies worse than you could have more problems.

He said cutting back would help. I think he didn't want to come right out and say quit running, because he knows I'm a runner. I've developed a little spur/lump in that area but nothing bad and it could go away.

Jon - I'm really not sure what to do. Either run 3 miles a day or just quit for one week and do the bike thing. What would you do in this situation?

From Jon on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 22:58:24 from 75.169.138.168

I would take 1-3 weeks off, whatever it takes. And I would err on the conservative side- get it 100% better so you can run pain free, rather than struggle for a long time.

From wheakory on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 00:55:19 from 24.116.159.75

Jeff - I know I should stop or something. I going to try moderation this week.

Jon - Thanks for your great advice. I'm going to try moderation this week if that doesn't allow it to improve then I will take sometime off.

From JimF on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 00:58:29 from 65.208.22.26

Kory, glad to hear that it is not a stress fracture or something more serious. You know your body and the best way that it will respond but I think I agree with Jon. Take a week off and be conservative. You are in great shape and it will not impact you to take some days off. Also, taking time off might help you get back to 100% quicker which will allow you to get back to normal training quicker. Like I said you know your body best and can decide on the best approach. Hope you heal quickly and are able to run without pain soon! I'll be praying for a speedy recovery.

From Nikky on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 12:23:47 from 134.50.63.173

Hi Kory,

I'm so glad to hear it's not bone; that's the one thing that will always stop you dead in your tracks! The only thing I really found I still could push and maintain fitness (since resting is always the last-resort option) was aquajogging. Your skin will smell like chlorine and itch eventually, no matter the showering routine, but it really does maintain fitness and you can do sprints. Just gotta get used to people lookin' at you funny. Aquabelt is here for loan any time! Maybe even just doing it in place of running for one week and interspersed with running the next to see how things improve? I suppose it depends how much of the irritation is due to impact, which is what the water would be best at reducing.

From wheakory on Tue, Mar 17, 2009 at 16:03:50 from 24.116.153.110

Thanks Nicole. I know nothing about aquajogging, but I'm going to learn. You've been very helpful. Thanks!. Nicole whats the plan for Saturday's run if I'm able?
