My Right Achilles Tendon was really sore today, but I decided to test the waters. The temperature was 15 degrees with a 12 mph wind so it wasn't to cold except for that wonderful wind that I love. Pocatello is the windiest city in Idaho because were the gateway that leads into the eastern area.

The first couple of miles my Achilles hurt and I almost turned around and went back home, but as I kept running the pain decreased but I could still feel it.. I actually ran 11.1 miles at an 6:50 overall pace in 1:16. I'm going to try and run on the home treadmill on the lunch hour to see how things feel, but at a very slow pace. I've never been injuried before so I don't know what to think. Maybe I need to take a month off? I know I need to do some stretching and maybe that will help. But God can heal it and I have the faith and believe he can. It might just be something that will go away in a couple of days. Whatever I did on my fall Saturday cause some issue.

 Lunch:

I debated whether to run on the home treadmill today, and I decided to test out the Achilles and see how it reacts.  It felt a little soreness but much much better than this morning.  I ran 5 miles.  The first mile I did in 7:10.  Then I dropped the rest to 6:40 - 6:35, then the last .75 of the last mile I ran 5:30 as fast as my treadmill will go.   The Achilles doesn't feel sore after the run, but will see tomorrow.

I wouldn't recommend running again today. I would also think about cutting the mileage back a bit too see if it improves. That is a lot better than taking time off. Don't feel pressured to test it out multiple times a day. It probably just needs a bit of rest/recovery. If you are constantly testing/straining it, it won't heal. My 2 cents

I agree with Cory, no need to push the mileage right now and it is better to rest the Achilles a bit so it can heal (one of the hardest to heal due to small amount of blood flow). Your fitness is great and it will not suffer with some reduced miles for a short time.

Cody: I did run and it really didn't hurt the second run, but it did that yesterday too. I will take your advice and only do a run a day to cut the miles. Thanks for your input.

Jeff: Thanks. I'm trying to stay ready for the Relay, but maybe one day runs will keep me fresh and heal the nagging soreness.

I don't know what that fall did, but I was perfectly fine before I fell. I don't think its serious but soreness that needs to heal.

Are you still good to carpool down to Provo on Wed., Feb 27 to hook up with Ted and others for the Relay? Or...Southwest airlines out of SLC to Phoenix for $189 roundtrip.

man, i did like 1/5th of your mileage and managed to sideline myself indefinitely. lol you have a sore achilles and are still pounding out the mileage. I've done almost 8 days of rest now :( and I still feel like its going to be just as sore as before when I start back up

Benn:

It's really odd I felt pretty good this afternoon. I think the fall I had on Saturday might have irritated the Tendon, and hope nothing else. But I will probably reduce my mileage which I could use a little break. I can't remember the last time I've been under 60 miles.

From JohnK on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 12:53:50

I know from experience how hard it is to back off, especially when running has been going well. But I often remind myself that the body doesn't get stronger or build endurance while one exercises, it's the REST and RECOVERY that allow improvement. Without rest, especially when injured, there can be no improvement and things will eventually get worse and still worse. Just as a body builder doesn't work the same muscles every day, a runner can't go hard day-after-day or a breakdown will certainly result. If your injury is from the fall that's in a way good, because it means it didn't result from a muscle imbalance or chronic tightness or something like that requiring a lot of work to correct. But letting it heal is essential, as I'm sure you know. I hope you're back at full strength soon! (You don't want to be on the sidelines and miss a moment of this lovely winter weather, right?!)

Thanks John K. Thanks for your advice, and your exactly right. I thinking forcing me to cut back will be good. I've let running go a little to far where I feel I have to run two days each day. I think I needed a reminder that it doesn't have to control my life. I need to make it fun again.
