Ok I woke up to a snow storm and that put me in a foul mood. I drove up to the Moose lodge  in Eden by Pineview reservoir.  I was extremely late and missed the busses. I grabbed my number and drove to the start and Misty and the girls drove back to mile 4. I barely had enough time to go to the bathroom and run to the start.  I hate stressed out runs like that. I wasnt feeling good from the start. Im not trying to use any excuses. I did save some gas from the previous weeks to try and make a good showing today but it wasnt in me.  I felt good to mile 4 and then we were out of the canyon and the headwind started to pick up mildly.  Tim passed me at mile 5 and had alot of power as he passed me.  I tried as hard as I could to keep him from fading away. At mile 8 or so I passed James and that gave me a little umph but it was brutal from then. A severe headwind with snow flurries and I felt like I was running in place. I could actually feel the wind pushing me when my foot released from the ground. Yuck!  I tried to run hard but my times suffered severly. Tim made a good show today and gained time back on what little lead I had on him.  Our last race is on the 25th and is a 30K.

My times were: 1:  5:31  That is 12 seconds slower than Moabs start and 7 slower than last week. 2: 5:38 still going down a canyon to help keep the pace.  3: 5:47 I felt good here and wanted to try to keep my time at this pace.  4: 5:39  Was pleased to keep the pace and started to be out of the canyon at this point. 5: 38 This was a good mile and not much of head wind but it was present.  6: 5:45 I started feeling my legs getting tired here but was determined to not let my time get slower. 7: 5:49 not bad started getting hit with some gusts of wind here.  8: 5:56 Dang! the wind was really bad at this point. 9: 6:07 gagged on a gu and felt it for almost a mile. But my body desperately needed it. we had headwinds and crosswinds as we zig zagged . 10: 5:56 Not bad considering i was in hell. 11: 6:32 This is where I was battling the God of wind Im not sure the name for sure but i know he got the point from my words to him. 12: 6:23 a few turns helped the wind subside.  13: 6:24  in the home stretch. 13.1: 1:17:41   11 seconds slower than last week.

Im glad its over!

Sounds brutal.

From walter on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 15:05:42 from 76.27.15.208

Yeah Clyde, just add snow in your eyes and the same wind as last year. hurray!

From Bec on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 15:47:38 from 67.177.35.60

That just does not sound like fun. Even with the weather conditions, you still flew, seesh. Keep it up and win the series! I'm a fan.

From TylerS on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 15:50:14 from 66.119.143.249

Walter, Walter, Walter.... That is 3 halfs in three weeks all of which were 1:17:00. I just have one question? ARE YOU HUMAN??? I want a blood sample. Wow that was some tough conditions to run in. Good job on toughing it out!

From RAD on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 16:11:36 from 67.166.99.8

Walter, I'm sorry that the running gods were beaten by the weather gods today! But wow! I must give a 'ditto' to Tyler's comment. Just think of all us poor people that have to run twice as long in that nasty weather to finish as many miles! Great job today, and I'm sure the running gods will be with you on the 25th!!!

From Adam RW on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 16:22:08 from 98.202.223.65

Way to stay strong. It is amazing how much you can ask of your body and how well it responds.

From Michelle N. on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 16:37:12 from 75.162.116.100

Sounds like 1:17 is your magic number. Awesome job for such crazy conditions.

From Paul Petersen on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 17:19:15 from 75.162.105.45

Great job Walter. It was a tough day out there. Is 3 halfs in 3 weeks considered some sort of hat trick?

From jtshad on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 17:19:53 from 69.20.133.91

Way to run very strong in crappy conditions! 3 faster HM in 3 weeks...amazing.

Dang, based on your writeup I am glad I didn't drive all the way down for that weather!

From walter on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 17:51:28 from 76.27.15.208

Bec, Im glad I have a fan. You keep up that running also! I like watching how everyone is doing so good from the early year on!

Tyler, Tyler, Tyler, Am I human? or am I dancing? You put that song in my head. sorry As far as the blood, it is tainted with Coca Cola. That is my drug of choice im trying to get off of.

Rachel, I am not the athlete because I run fast. The Athletes are those that do take twice as long! If I had your mental toughness, I would be beating those kenyans. thats no lie!

Adam, I thought Id see you out today. It was a toughy today.

Michelle, I need to get my magic number down by 5 minutes in the next few months. Do you know the winning time today was around 1:09? Crap the bed! Imagine if Alexander Thomas had a tail wind?

Paul I wish my hat trick wouldve had enough to pull a better time out. Maybe try to stick with you closer like TOU last year. Your an amazing runner! Keep it up! My hopes are to be like you this coming year.

From Marion on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 17:51:53 from 71.213.124.146

The snow STINKS!!! Great race :) REady for summer???

From walter on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 17:55:11 from 76.27.15.208

Jeff, it wouldve been nice to see you out there in hell this morning! To bad you missed a doozy! It felt like a marathon finishing in a brutal headwind the last 4 or so miles. I only had 3 miles that went over 6 minute pace. I dont think id be ready for Boston this year the way my legs feel right now go figure. Im going to ramp up my mileage now and concentrate on Ogden.

From walter on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 17:58:15 from 76.27.15.208

Marion, ugg I know I hate it. Enough all ready weather you broken record! I dare you, no Triple dog dare you to warm up. come on help Al Gores global warming theory hold some freakin ground. Did you freeze today?

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 18:23:37 from 71.36.85.29

You're just too darn skinny that the wind blew you back up the canyon. Sorry about that brutal wind and horizontal snow. STINKS!!! Hey, NOTHING stops you though. 1st in your AG and 6th overall is nut'n to sneeze at! CONGRATS on CONQUERING the evil god of wind!

From Marion on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 18:39:30 from 71.213.124.146

Yes and no, all at the same time :)

From Jon on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 18:43:38 from 75.169.149.246

Dude, you ran a great race given those conditions. I think you are in a lot better shape than you think. Nice work. I was hoping to compete with you this racing series but it isn't even close.

From James on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 18:48:56 from 71.199.40.246

Back to back 1:17s eh! Nice race for nasty weather.

From Jon on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 18:54:52 from 75.169.149.246

By the way, you are still up 1:25 on Tim, so you can still win the series!

From walter on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 18:56:15 from 76.27.15.208

Smooth, I was pumping my arms but my legs were not going forward. haha

Jon, Thanks. I hope I am. Id like to be up there closer to Paul. Wouldnt that be nice?

James, that was a rough day. You did good. It was brutal.

From James on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 19:07:28 from 71.199.40.246

Walter, I wasn't there!

From walter on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 19:09:32 from 76.27.15.208

James, you were there in spirit! haha Sorry I thought you were James moore.

From Twinkies on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 21:40:39 from 207.155.176.10

I have to add my congratulations to the list for 3 HM in 3 weeks. That is an amazing accomplishment.

From tarzan on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 22:11:41 from 97.117.61.168

Wow - I know how tough those winds can be on that course and know how nasty it was out today. Very impressive job on a tough race. Maybe - like St. George for a lot of us last year - the weather gods are trying to make everything else look easy in comparison.

From Lucia on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 22:54:36 from 98.204.55.168

I second Smooth's comment, too funny! Nice job wall-e, you should pray to the running god instead of the wind god :)

From walter on Sat, Apr 04, 2009 at 23:40:43 from 76.27.15.208

I saw you there twinkies! congrats on pushing through that crappy wind.

Maurine, it was a half marathon of the SGM exept 30 degrees colder.

Lucia, no doubt there werent enough prayers to stop the wind goddess or gods.

From james on Sun, Apr 05, 2009 at 00:02:56 from 67.172.226.141

Yeah it wasn't a disaster. It's nice that I can still average 6 minute miles in such terrible circumstances. Good job though that's a high quality 1:17

From walter on Sun, Apr 05, 2009 at 00:05:02 from 76.27.15.208

Oh good i have the right James now right? Im glad that one is over! Are you going to do the 30k? You should.

From Snoqualmie on Sun, Apr 05, 2009 at 23:28:20 from 67.171.56.164

Fabulous race, under difficult conditions. Bravo, Walter!

From walter on Sun, Apr 05, 2009 at 23:55:35 from 76.27.15.208

Thanks Snoqualmie, hows the weather there been for you? Today was fabulous. I wished i could trade it for yesterdays.

From Burt on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 00:27:52 from 98.167.151.26

Ah man. Smooth and Lucia stole my comment. Fat guys like me don't get blown over in the wind.

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 09:52:08 from 67.171.56.164

Well, we are finally getting a little springtime here. But it had to dump snow on me Friday first just to prove its point.

From walter on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 09:57:46 from 76.27.15.208

Burt, You appear to have lost quite a bit of weight from when I saw you in Del Sol! But your right, the wind is my enemy in running.

Sno, I hate it when mother nature gets onery and tries to make a point. I miss it up there in your neck of the woods. I used to spend 1 month every summer as a kid up there when I lived in Coeurdalene.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 17:44:26 from 64.81.245.109

Hey, at least you could do a 6:23. In Moab 2006 I ran the 11th mile in 6:45 into a headwind while the overall time was 1:15:58. It can get worse.

From walter on Mon, Apr 06, 2009 at 22:34:17 from 76.27.15.208

Sasha, thats true. I have been able to get my last 3 mile times down. It has always been hard for me but its a work in progress. My times are about 3 minutes per race slower than last year which is frustrating. But I did feel like I got my times down quicker last year and they leveled out. Hopefully I can do opposite this year, by slowly building and lowering my times so I can get a good pr in SGM.
