I started the race circuit today by running the 5k. It was a bit cold but nothing to keep me from wearing shorts and a singlet. I warmed up 2 miles with Jon and Cody and then started the race. There was a ringer in there that started the race on fire! I forget his name but he was on his own from the get go.  Cody and Tim, Jon and I were in a 2x2 group and by the first half mile, my legs started burning. I tried to push my pace a bit and stay with Cody and Tim. After the first mile Nathan and Jeff passed me and looked pretty good. I hit the big hill and caught Nathan and then we had the downhill and I passed Jeff and got close to Tim again. Then there was an up hill again that I had forgot about and it kicked my butt. I got passed by Nathan and Jeff. I waited for the downhill to try to push but by then I had a good 100 feet to make up. Didnt happen. It was icy on all the turns and a bit scary but held on to a 6th place finish and That puts me 3rd in the series if the winner of todays race decides not do do all 5 races. Cody kicked some major butt today! He beat me by 35 seconds! That is great for an early year race like that. I did a cool down run with Tim Cody, Jon and Nathan and Jeff.

Nice job today, Walter. It should be a fun series! Watch out for flying apples.

From wheakory on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 12:48:19

Walter great run. I've also had some downtime so that should make you feel good. Just think what you would have done if you could have trained the way you wanted to. Nice work.

From Walter on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 12:58:31

Jon, or a flying shoe kick to the butt huh?

Kory, thanks. I know what you mean. Cody has been running strong from SGM and it showed. He claimed hes not been doing speed workouts but his base has carried him very well. Im not far off from last year, only a couple of seconds slower. My legs felt out of it and I couldnt hook my arms to my legs. It felt like I was pumping my arms but my legs were doing what they wanted too. Im not getting frustrated because its early. I actually felt like I maxed out early last year and then kind of just coasted. I want to be opposite this year. Slowly build up to try and break a 2:30 in SGM. That would be great.

From Jon on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 13:02:27

Yeah, or flying shoes to the butt. I figured that was an appropriate welcome for the year, since you then kicked my butt in the race.

From jtshad on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 13:26:42

Congrats on a strong start to the race year!

From Walter on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 14:06:35

Jon, maybe it gave me the motivation to push myself this morning. haha

Jeff, where have you been hiding? I havnt been roaming the blog as much since I got on facebook. Are you on it?

From Lucia on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 14:19:30

Stud!

From Walter on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 14:26:05

Lucia, I need you at my races to help me with motivation. You can even quote Chris Farley!

From cody draper on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 15:03:30

Solid race Walter. Especially after surgery and winter "training". You will do well in the series.

From Walter on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 15:04:21

Thanks Cody, you were phenomenal today!

From superfly on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 15:11:19

Good job today Walt!

From Walter on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 15:32:19

Clyde, it was a lot colder and a lot steeper than last weeks run.

From Marion on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 17:45:29

Great race! You are super speedy!

Do you need the "van down by the river" speech???

From Burt on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 17:54:56

Great job. No porta-potty break tales to tell?

From Michelle N. on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 18:09:04

WOOHOO! Way to go Walter. You upped your miles the past couple of weeks and still kicked booty today! What's my prob? I feel like I got run over by a train after my run today!

From Walter on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 21:08:20

Marion, I would love the Van down by the river speech. Ill keep you posted of my race schedule. How awesome would that be to have a chris farley speech at the beginning of the race from Marion in her hot pink outfit!

Burt, No porta potties, just near flops on the icy roads.

Michelle, Even though you feel like hud you can at least say those miles are there! Good run!

From Rachel on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 22:57:10

Walter - congrats! That is an awsome finish. Why didn't you tell me you liked Chris Farley? I've got nearly all of Tommy Boy memorized ... I can keep you entertained on Tuesday if you can keep up with me :)

From Walter on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 23:19:01

Oh Rachel, my favorite Chris Farley sketch is a rare one that is hardly shown. Its when dana carvey plays Ross Perot and he's in the mall and makes Chris Farley act like a pig for money.

Sounds challenging trying to keep up to Rachel huh? Your on!

From montelepsy on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 23:26:20

Great job Walter!

I nearly peed my pants during Farley's figure skating sketch.

From Walter on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 23:32:33

that is a great one! Then theres the Chip and dales! oh my goodness that is great!

From Marion on Sat, Feb 07, 2009 at 23:35:20

I have to confess, the Chip and Dales is my favorite! THe ice skating one is a very close second, maybe even a 1.1 ;)

From Walter on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 00:02:41

Its a shame he died, he made alot of people laugh. I remember whent the Greenbay Packers won the superbowl, he went on the Leno show and ran up and down the isle in his cheese head and by the time he got to Jay he couldnt talk! "Im a little out of shape" Oh my gosh he was so humorous.

From Lybi on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 00:07:36

Great job, Walter! How in blue blazes can you run like this on ice. Jimminy!

From Walter on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 00:13:23

Lybi, there was a cop on every corner telling us to slow down and be careful. haha I guess its cheeper to hire a cop then to throw ice melt down. On one turn I ran onto someones lawn to avoid the ice that covered the whole road. Fun stuff! Be grateful for what you have in this period of time. ;)

From Nancy on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 17:51:37

Good job Walter. Last year two of my daughers and I did the series, but this year we decided not to because we are started to cross train for a triathlon.

From Kelli on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 19:20:08

Great job Walter!

From rivertonpaul on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 20:03:37

Impressive, all things considered .

From Walter on Sun, Feb 08, 2009 at 21:30:00

Nancy thanks alot. What Tri are you training for? Im thinking of doing the American Fork tri. that one is fun

Kelli, thank you as usual. It was a great race day.

Paul, thank you that is true, I have to keep reminding myself what I just went through.

From Teena on Mon, Feb 09, 2009 at 16:49:32

Nice race Walter!! Can hardly believe you can do that so shortly after your surgery. You are coming back so strong. AWESOME!!

From Walter on Mon, Feb 09, 2009 at 20:51:40

I had some pain when I finished but my legs were more painful.
