Started this race not knowing at all how I was going to do. I wanted to beat last years time but it wasn't in me. I hit mile 1 in 5.19. Way to fast. I settled into a 5.35 for a few miles and couldn't handle that pace after 4. My legs were spent. I had nothing in em. My pace dropped to 5.50 or so and I just jogged it out to a 1:17.50 almost 3 minutes slower than last year. I did pass 5 or so runners in the last 3 miles to put me into 13th overall and 1st in age group. It was a lot warmer this year and I saw a lot of friends at the start and finish. It really is great to get to know new bloggees. I forgot to mention that my buddy had his daughters dressed up as Santa Claus at mile 11 just like the movie St. Ralph when Santa appeared at the end of Boston marathon. It was awesome. They were yelling to me "you can do it Walter. It will be a miracle!" it gave me that boost I needed.

Great Job. You'll continuing to see your times drop with conditioning. It's just the start of the racing year. Good luck on your next run.

From Nancy on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 09:11:34 from 76.27.11.127

I'm sorry you were slower than last year, but 13th overall is great especially with that many runners.

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 12:18:29 from 71.219.76.202

I wish I had seen the Santas! Either there were gone, or I was completely out of it!!!

You and Misty both did great and it was nice to chat for a bit. i wish we could have found Misty before we had to go! We were showered and packed up and out of there by 1:30. I am never doing that again. I felt like I had jet lag all day!

See you Tuesday?

From Michelle N. on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 14:43:39 from 75.162.237.156

Good job! Great time. I think my legs would be dead too if I had run as many races as you have in the past month.

From Craig on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 19:38:04 from 67.186.211.200

Impressive. I'm bummed that I didn't get to run it this year.

From Jon on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 20:16:22 from 75.169.138.168

Congrats on finishing 1st in the age group.

From Walter on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 20:56:07 from 76.27.13.75

Kory, I just dont have the patience. I want it now!

Nancy, Im an ungrateful person huh? I never am satisfied with a race even when I win it. Ive got to change my attitude! Ive already got the speech of smiling for the cameras. haha

Kelli, You and Scott did great! I didnt want to tell you the difficulty on the course until you witnessed it for yourself. Its the scenery that you go down for right!?

Michelle, you owe me big time for signing up for the Riverton half. All I could think of in this race was how I have to do anoter 2 halfs in a row.

Craig, it was a great day this year. Warm at the start. I have no excuses. just wasnt my day.

Jon, I saw a guy with a t-shirt on that said race official do not pass! I need that shirt! I just have to make sure im ahead of you guys from the start. haha That was a rough race. A little too close to last weeks.

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 22:12:41 from 71.219.76.202

Hmmm....so you tricked me into this one? I have only run 3 other halfs, but that one was by far the hardest course.

I have to laugh, because while i was running I was thinking one of two things: WALTER LIED TO ME and WHY DID I SIGN UP FOR RIVERTON NEXT WEEK? So, Riverton is just for fun. You have had two race weekends in a row, so maybe you should just run this one with your wife and take it easy and have fun?!? Or, maybe you should just win it?

From Walter on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 22:21:16 from 76.27.13.75

Kelli, I wouldnt exactly call it trickery. I really enjoy it and every year it is challenging. I feel because its earlier in the year more than the rolling hills it has. Riverton will be a gut check for me. I am too competitive, im out to win! I realized today that Im not a high school runner anymore. I will try to find the recovery I need for Saturday. I glad I saw you guys down there. Wasnt it just an awesome day!

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 22:29:05 from 71.219.76.202

I agree, Moab really is a good race. It is tough, I just was not prepared for it. I need to cut myself some slack, I was expected to come in at 1:47 and I beat that by over 5 minutes!!! So, this is a good course, I just made some really stupid mistakes (lack of experience got me). I will be back, I have to run it again to prove I can have a smart race.

I am not sure who all is coming to Riverton, but I think you can win without killing yourself. It is an easier course than Moab, that is for sure (although that s curve at mile 8 or 9 sucks). You for sure need an easy week, though. So, just run with me during our group runs---that will keep it nice and easy! You know me, the slow poke that can only beat people when they are not trying.

From Walter on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 22:44:31 from 76.27.13.75

Kelli, definitely. I can run with you! im going to feel pretty sluggish. I havnt done the riverton course at all. Can you believe that? haha Im going to maybe run a part of it or do the Kellis Scout guide and drive it. haha You did just fine. I heard from Ken Pliska who is the masters record holder on the course that even he started out too fast yesterday. I was tired enough from the previous week to know I couldnt hang with them. Next time maybe.

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 22:55:03 from 71.219.76.202

If you and Misty want to go on one of the off group days (Monday or Wednesday) and do part of it, let me know. We need to make sure you know where you are going so you do not get lost because everyone will be following you. We could meet at the river bottoms and do that part. Wait, that is like 10 miles? Maybe that is too much?

From Walter on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 23:01:50 from 76.27.13.75

Kelli, Lets do Wednesday and Im pretty confident on the riverbottom part. Its the other parts im in the rough about. I hope they put bright shiny things on the turns with out arrows. They are hard to see when Im running. Ill run with you in the morning if you want? Just tell me where to meet. I dont think Danielle is feeling good enough to run tomorrow.

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 23:07:57 from 71.36.65.79

CONGRATS on the AG win! You're one SPEEDY DUDE! Riverton 1/2 will be a walk in the park for you.

From Walter on Sun, Mar 22, 2009 at 23:09:00 from 76.27.13.75

Thanks. Are you going to be there?

From jtshad on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 10:51:53 from 204.134.132.225

Walter, good race...nice job on the 1st place in your AG. Sounds like there were some fast guys there (I noticed Ken Pliska's name and saw that he was registered for Boston and has a great qualifying time...some fast guys over 40 are going to be there).

From bec on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 11:29:40 from 205.123.38.98

Nice race! Hello, 13th in 1:17? WOW! I could only do that in my imagination. You have some speedy legs.

From Marion on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 11:32:29 from 71.213.123.102

That time of your ROCKS! Congratulations on the AG win! See you Saturday!

From Lucia on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 13:05:42 from 74.9.147.114

13 is my lucky number! You did awesome Wall-e! Congrats!

From walter on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 00:51:36 from 76.27.13.75

Jeff, I talked with Ken at the starting line and he told me he was going to try harder this year than he did last year. He said he started way to fast which is good because I was right behind him for 15 plus miles and we both sort of faded. Me worse than him.

Bec, I told you, when I run im not there to sell lemonade. I want it all! haha It was a hard course. Have you ever done that one?

Marion, For some reason I thought you were doing both like us crazy people. will definitely see you saturday.

Lucia, we need to change it to number 1! haha
