Ok First of all let me give some advice to you about eating Jalepeno' Poppers the night before the Marathon.  They are as hot coming out as they are going in!!!  I barely made it to the buses in time which was a bit stressfull but I made it and sat next to my neighbor Greg and Burt and Becca was behind him.  We made it up and they barely gave us time to use the bathrooms before we took off. I saw a Kenyan runner, and Nick McCoombs and new I probably had no chance of winning. We started  the race off all 4 wide running and the actual winner of the marathon slowed down after the 1st mile which was a 5:38 and I felt really good! It was quite a downhill push to help us out. after the second mile the Kenyan started to push the pace and Nick held onto him and i slowed down which is good because my third mile would have been close to 5 even. I stayed about 100 feet behind Nick till mile 5 and started feeling like I had to go to the bathroom.  I looked behind me to see where the 4th place runner was and he was quite a ways behind me. I used the porta potti at mile 6 and it slowed me down and as soon as I heard the 4th place runner I was out of the POP and tried to catch him but he started to push his pace and Nick was probably a good 1/4 mile ahead of me by then and I watched him actually catch him and pass him up. I thought I would see him burnt out down the stretch but he actually won the marathon in 2:19! sheesh! After I realized I had no chance at the top 3 I considered slowing down and seeing if I could help Tyler try to hit a 2:49 like he wanted to. I made it to the 13 mile mark and used the bathroom again and when I came out there still was no one in sight behind me. I made it to the next aid station which by the way were unatended, I had to fill my own cup up with water or gatorade hahah. So every aid station was sort of a buffet stop for me. Lets see, do I want to try a banana or some gu's?  I wished they had some chicken or maybe some Ice cream. That would be nice!  I made it to mile 16 and saw my buddy Kimball walking from the half marathon and I grabbed his shoulder and startled him and stopped and walked with him for about a minute. We were in a canyon at that point and I could see behind me about a half a mile and while I walked with him I watched for anyone to come around the corner but there wasnt anyone so I kept talking and then took off and made it through the windy uphill canyon and got my legs to start moving and then another hill would hit me and then down hill and then mile 21 there was a long hill that lasted a little over a half mile and I told myself to make it to the top and I break for a sec. I made it and then didnt want to stop so kept pushing myself. By then I was in the midst of a lot of half marathon runners and it was a battle to pass them. They were running 8 minute pace and it was as if my body would try matching them.  I really had a hard time trying to get through the last 4 miles. I would cheer on the half marathoners on purpose just so I would get a little returned recognition or cheers back. I needed anything like that. It was a hard marathon to finish. I bet that the winner of this race couldve hit close to 2:10 on SGM course! I think it was a little too close to run from SGM also.  It was great weather and a cool place to spend the weekend, even though I stayed in St. George. I want to give a shout out to Lisa, Josse, Dane, Becca, Burt, Greg, Nick, Redrooster, Amber, Jose, and whoever else was there that I saw that I forgot to mention. lol Very fun to be there.  Um yes, I forgot to mention the most sought after Guy/Gal running team, Tyler and Kellie.

Um, you forgot about me and my hot hubby Tyler! No mention of us anywhere in that post :). JK. Nice job yesterday. That was a very hard course!

From Walter on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 17:58:03 from 76.27.15.208

Kelli, you wouldve loved the first half to run on! That was the best part of the whole experience. If you notice I quickly edited you into my blog. Im getting up there in age and my mind seams to wander. Forgive me.

From MCKENZIE on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 18:10:11 from 75.169.114.59

I had no idea you were doing Mesquite....way to go! Thats awesome

From Walter on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 18:30:55 from 76.27.15.208

Yeah, I toughed it out Mckenzie. It wasnt a pleasant second half for me.

Kelli, btw, I did mention your husbands name in my blog I was going to try to help him in but I ended up having to help my own self in. haha

From RAD on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 20:35:54 from 76.27.12.70

Nice work Walter! Great time on any course. I think you're so used to running with us 8mmilers that your body thinks you need to run that now! :) You'll have to start leaving us in the dust again!

From Walter on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 20:42:04 from 76.27.15.208

Rachel, thats not true. No matter what I did I couldnt get my legs to move faster.

From RAD on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 20:50:22 from 76.27.12.70

well, after running up those 50 hills I probably wouldn't be able to run faster than a 10mm - so I'm still in awe! :)

From Superfly on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 21:19:48 from 208.117.127.110

Good to see ya yesterday even though it was for a short time. Tough course man and then you add jalepeno' poppers to the mix and thats real trouble.

Enjoy the rest of the winter and rest a little so you can have something for next spring and summer. Hope you had a good trip.

From Walter on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 21:35:15 from 76.27.15.208

Jalepeno Poppers, not a good mix! Man, that guy that won was truely amazing. He was behind me at mile 6 when the kenyan guy was already a half a mile ahead of me and beat him by 10 minutes I think. That is who I want to be when I grow up.

From redrooster on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 21:49:53 from 71.219.128.171

so it was the jalapeno poppers. I was worried about you when I asked you how you were doing at the end- you looked none too good. geez that was brutal, my legs have never been so sore.

thanks for filling out the other guys ahead of me. who was that guy who won anyway? I can't believe that time. what a hero. and he looked really really good in that cool outfit too. he earned his 1500 bucks, and I bet that course record will stand for a long time.

see you next time, but it will not be a mammoth marathon or in mesquite. no way.

From Walter on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 23:16:34 from 76.27.15.208

Scott, when I came into the tent it was so dark that I had to go sit down. I blacked out totally! Ive never been so wiped out that I couldnt even acknowledge my family cheering me on at the end. I am surprised they dont recognize the Masters category either. You shouldve won the 1500 bucks to match the others. Thats how all races are. Well besides Mammoth. I will email him and suggest such niceties.

From josse on Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 23:32:48 from 75.216.185.24

Good job Walter it looks like those last 4 miles were just as hard for you as they were for me.

From Smooth on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 00:30:55 from 174.23.201.210

I can't believe they didn't have any chicken or ice cream for you!!! Darn! They should have paid you in cheering the half marathoners! LOL!!! You're an amazing speed demon!

Man alive! 2:50 on such a toughie hilly course with TWO PoP stops, walked and talked with a buddy, lolly-gaggled at the aid stations with NO competition to push you! You are an ANIMAL...a very funny and fast animal!!! :)

From jtshad on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 08:22:14 from 69.20.183.178

Nice race Walter! Way to push to the end and make it a "fun" race after you had all the issues (Jalapeno's...what were you thinking?).

You are a racing fool this year, my good friend!

From ArmyRunner on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 09:46:34 from 69.169.145.121

Good job Walter. The guy that went on to win was Mario Macias who is a pretty fast guy. He ran a 2:18:34 for his debut marathon this year at Twin Cities in October. He has also run a 18:40 4M, 29:49 10K, 45:54 15K, 1:03:32 20K, and a 1:06:52 1/2M this year as well. So not to surprising that he went on to win.

From Sue on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 10:39:11 from 75.169.62.91

I'm so jealous. I wish I could be running with you guys! Nice job by the way, you're a rockstar!

From Bill on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 11:05:52 from 168.179.180.160

Super job! I Drove this course and i knew anyone that ran it would need to have true Grit! Way to go Walter!

From AmberG on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 11:30:46 from 64.255.89.47

I think we all could have done better with ice cream at the aid stations. . .seriously :) or people, , whichever ha ha! Great job, i can't believe your time after reading about how much you stopped and then spent a few minutes with a friend. It's good to get a race in regardless of it not being the time we want, you did AWESOME!!! Way to finish!

From c h a d on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 12:02:52 from 67.42.252.25

Nice race, Walter. I'm impressed you would jump into this race so close to SGM.

Also, I just have to say I think this is the funniest opening line for a race report:

"Ok First of all let me give some advice to you about eating Jalepeno' Poppers the night before the Marathon."

From Jon on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 12:18:25 from 75.169.150.52

I always love your race reports, especially when the races aren't very organized. Congrats on a good race.

From jj on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 12:29:05 from 138.64.2.76

Once again an incredible job Walter. I actually wish I could have some poppers right now! Ever since this race I have been on an eating binge. I agree that it is amazing that that Mario dude got a 2:19 on that course. The course was much harder than I ever expected but it was nice to see you and your family and all the other bloggers. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

From James on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 14:33:27 from 163.248.128.155

Beautiful report! I would like to see someone run a 2:10 at St. George, I don't think a body is tough enough to do it.

From Adam RW on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 22:57:36 from 155.101.240.107

Walter, You truly continue to amaze! Congrats on another great performance, poppers or not :0

From Teena on Mon, Nov 23, 2009 at 22:59:10 from 174.52.45.85

Nice job Walter James!!!!

I have to ask, what in the world would possess you to eat jalapeno poppers the night before!!!! CRAZY BOY!!!!

From Cookielover on Wed, Nov 25, 2009 at 19:32:43 from 97.81.82.211

Another marathon! Impressive. Congratulations on your finish. I was highly entertained as usual by your race summary. Jalopeno Poppers the night before? I am asking as well, what were you thinking?

From Walter on Sun, Nov 29, 2009 at 00:46:47 from 76.27.15.208

Josse, yes indeed! As soon as i got to the top of the last hard hill i couldnt get myself to move.

Smooth, some of those tables were a smorgasbord of running edibles. I actually grabbed some licorice at one of the tables. Something ive never done!

Jeff, How am I going to compete in your division if I dont start gearing up! lol

Ted, Mario was phenomenal! I only hope to be able to run a solid race like that.

Sue, You shouldve came down and ran it! Nice weather!

Bill, I wished I wouldve talked to you guys to try and figure out how to run this course. Everything I did was wrong.

Amber, haha, yes I was joking about the icecream...maybe? NOT! It would be a start! lol yeah, not having anyone there to assist you was a true bummer. Great to see you out!

Chad, you have to expect something from my race reports when you see a 2:50 and 4th overall! lol

Jon, Mammoth has a long way to go to organize a great race. Im not knocking them, im sure its an undertaking.

JJ, good thing we had Thanksgiving to help us recover from this race. haha

James, I honestly think that Mario would be the man to do it! This was his second marathon ever from what I hear.

Adam, Poppers and all...I conquered. lol

Teena, I had been battling Migraine headaches all week and I took some serious excederin migraine pills and sudafed pm which made my gut kill so I didnt eat much all day. I saw that and it was the only thing that sounded good. Spaghetti wasnt an option. lol

Cookielover, you and I know im here for everyones entertainment. what would the blog do without my adverse affect!? lol

From Burt on Mon, Jan 04, 2010 at 14:56:47 from 206.19.214.144

I don't think I read your full report. I certainly didn't read through the comments. Maybe you were only halfway done was I was looking for it. But now that you're on the Hot Discussion Board, I'll comment. Just to keep you up there a little while longer. It's amazing the competition that comes out when a little money is offered. That Mario dude has a bright future ahead of him.

From Walter on Mon, Jan 04, 2010 at 15:17:15 from 206.53.157.234

Thanks Burt. I know I really wasn't to serious going into that race. I am going to take it more serious this year.
