Got my pacers organized at the start of this race and lined up without any warmup. First of all, I have to explain my mishap. I was wakeboarding 2 saturdays ago and tried to attempt a flip and the outcome was 3 fractured ribs. I havnt run a lick since.  My pacers were doing this race so I went up without really knowing what to do. I was going to take a spot if someone didnt show up. They all came so I decided to just line up and do my best. I was talking to Clyde and he told me he was injured from wakeboarding as well. Go figure. I lined up next to them and talked to Steve Anderson who was my only threat for winning Masters overall.  I was joking about his attire as he was wearing board shorts and a t-shirt that had ripped sleaves and neck out of it and had Jeff Dunhams arab skeleton with the words Silence, I Keel You! Haha. When the gun went off, Steve was standing near the river side of the road and I pushed him. I was laughing so hard and I hope they got a pic of it. He didnt fall into the water like I had planned. I started this race right with the group of fast guys and immediately felt pain. I told Steve the first mile that I couldnt push this pace. I let him go with Albert. I ran with Clyde and Adam and another guy for a while and the terrain started to drop more and I felt ok on the down because I honestly wasnt breathing hard so I I got to a 5:35 pace. Whenever I got to a flat or uphill section it destroyed me. I was trying to compensate breathing hard by changing my form of running to a smaller stride and it just made my times drop right to the 6-6:30 pace. I knew I was in second for masters so I didnt really care about the younger guys passing me at the end. I went from 9th to 12th in the last mile which I know wouldnt ever have happened if I could push it. I felt good with this time and from last years time of 1:12 I know I wouldve been sitting in a better position but I had to run regardless of my ailments.  My pacers did awesome and the local newspaper did a write up on them which was a great deal, The race director announced us at the start and the finish and put our logo on their tech shirts! I really do like this race and the sponsors for it. They gave away a ton of prizes that were nice at the end including 2 treadmills.

Great job Walter. I banged up some ribs skiing a few years ago and couldn't move faster than walking for about 3 weeks, so pretty solid to still run 1:17 despite the injury.

The pacers appeared to be a hit!

From Walter on Sun, Aug 26, 2012 at 11:48:03 from 97.149.57.64

Jake, they did a write up of us in the Herald Journal which I posted on Facebook. It has A pic of Andrea from last year. But it was nice to get some attention. They even put us on the back of the race event shirts. Great run to you! I was bugged knowing I couldn't go full threshold but felt ok being able to average under 6 pace. It opened my eyes to wanting to push harder and seeing how long I can stay at threshold.

You are definitely tougher than me! Fractured ribs! Ouch! Congrats on a good performance under the conditions, and nice job with the pacers.

Thanks Scott! I admire your progress this year as well! I'm amazed at the talent level in Utah. We are a force to be reckoned with.

Cody, I forgot to mention you in my report! Thank you so much for running with me for a bit. You helped me to a pr before in the freedom run. :) great seeing you out!

here's the article about your pacers. I can probably get an extra hard copy from a neighbor if you want it. I gave our copy to Andrea.

Awesome run! Nice to have the shirts appreciated once in a while! There was another article today in the sports section write up that had great stuff about the pacers!

From JulieC on Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 04:42:18 from 71.35.251.181

masters are just tougher...pain is normal over 40!! you are my inspiration if I ever decide to wake board, at least I know I can still run if I fracture three or less ribs!! :D

From Walter on Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 06:02:38 from 97.163.226.117

Thanks Matt!

Steve, we were a hit there for sure! I love Logan and that race.

Julie, done! We will have pacer party up at DeerCreek. I'll teach you how to waKeboard.

Good to see ya up there Walt. Wish we could have ran it healthy and at full steam. Oh well. Maybe next year.

From MarkP on Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 10:03:35 from 70.58.42.217

Wow, fractured ribs and still racing...great job!

From Adam RW on Mon, Aug 27, 2012 at 14:55:13 from 155.101.152.123

Walter, I'm sorry for your injury. It was nice running with you if even for only two miles. When that "other guy" passed me near the mouth of the canyon I really thought it was going to be you. Stay away from those other sports so hopefully we can be running together legitimately next race...
