Race: Cottonwood Thanksgiving Day 5k (3.107 Miles) 00:26:20, Place overall: 243, Place in age division: 2

The Cottonwood Thanksgiving Day 5k is a local 5k that is contested ever year on Thanksgiving Day and I can't find anywhere where it says when it started? (I think the first 5k was on Thanksgiving Day in 1967) I attended this race with Troy and Camille. We got to the race early enough to get a warm up run on the course. Right off it was easy to see that the first half of the course was up hill on city streets that seemed to roll on and on. The only good part of this was that the return trip to the finish line was pretty much the same route but down hill with a really mean hill at about the 2 mile mark that we didn't really plan for.  The start of the race was a bit congested with about 1386 runners, dogs and stroller pushers having a fun run on a great Thanksgiving Day. It was 50 degrees with little or no breeze on a partly cloudy morning. The race started on time (9:00am), but it was congested with with so many strollers and dog walkers mixed into the crowd  it was hard to get started into you personal run. Anyway, as I started I noticed that one old guy had lined up way ahead of me and got a really big head start on me, to which I was unable to catch him by the end. So the race is off and running, Troy and Camille and I are off on different races and paces but aimed at meeting at the end. As I progressed thru the first half of the race I felt a bit sluggish running up hill and found myself hoping for the down hill portion of the race to finally appear so I could get some get up and go in my get-along. Thats when I ran into the hill at about a mile away from the finish. I remember seeing the guy that finished  #1 in our age division clear the top of the hill when I was at the bottom. All I was thinking at that time was to keep the feet moving and not get passed by any more old guys between the hill and the finish line. As I finished I got to talk to Paul who is a local who I get to run against in 5ks all over the local area. We congradulated one another and vowed to meet again.

I finished with a 26:20.3/8:30 pace in second (2nd) place in my 65-69 Age Division of 8. Overall I was 243 of 1386 and 174th place of  637 Male Gender.

Troy finished at 29:07 and Camille finished with a 31:48. So now it will be on to the "Beat the New Year 5k" on New Years Eve at Sugar House Park and then the big ramp-up in training for a return to The Boston Marathon in April of 2018......

Life is Good!!!!
