Nice 7.5 miler to start the new year. Not as nice for Kimi who took a nasty fall on some slick ice :(. We didn't get out until around noon so temps were pretty nice for January near 40.

Drove up and did the Revolution Run at the Olympic Oval. Round and round and round we went. Plan was to do 48 laps which is close to a half marathon but due to some bad info from the timer chip computer dude we ended up with 49. Who knows maybe we even did 50. 14 miles with the lovely and talented Kimi. Dang dogs started barking at 4:50am so we got up and got in 6 miles before meeting up with the SF regulars for 8 more. It was BRRRR cold down in the river bottoms. My nose & cheeks did this weird thing they do sometimes when it's very cold where they go numb and I can't breathe through my nose. It kind of freaks me out and makes me claustrophibic and on the verge of hyperventilating and passing out. Also my face sorta gets frozen in a weird expression so I look like The Joker and I freak everyone else out. Weird stuff, I don't really like it! But on the bright side I got in 48 miles this week, my highest total since before SGM.

Working at home today so decided to wait until just before lunch so I could catch some sunshine and not have to worry about frozen-face weirdness. Ran solo and did 6 hill repeats along the way, trying to build some leg strength and prep my legs for faster running.

Relaxed 6 miles with Kim in the early morning. Then later got to the gym at work for 30 min XT. Managed to get to 4 minutes planking last night but not without lots of encouragement/coaxing/whip-cracking from Kim. Thanks babe! Looks like I might also be down 2 or 3 lbs since first of the year. Nice to see my motivation slowly returning after taking a break since BCM.

6.5 miles with some "far-tlek-ing across the universe...". Working at home today so went out with Kim just before lunch. Didn't really have plans for any kind of speed/tempo workout, but Kim seemed to have some extra umph so she ended up doing a few mile repeats, I think mostly in the 7:30-7:50 range. I joined her for some of the fun but also decided to test out my seem-to-be-recovering hamstrings by doing a 1/2 dozen or so strides. So far so good, all in all it ended up being a fun little run. Hopefully my hammies are happy tomorrow.

Six miles solo in the early morning on very sloppy, slushy roads. Had the yak-trax on for the first little while but it was too warm for them to be useful so ran without them most the run. My shoes were entirely soaked by the end of the run but I still enjoyed myself. Later got to the gym for 30 min XT and some pushups. Tonight I'll try 4 mins of plank and see if it's any easier than last time.

But didn't have a whole lot of oomph I think my 60-min massage yesterday (more of the painful variety rather than the relaxing kind) might have had something to do with it.

Nice to get the first 16 miler in the books. Pretty warm morning most everyone had shorts but there were a few chilly spots by the fields. I was very bummed to see Kim trip and go down hard toward the beginning of the run. That's 3 times this year and twice in 2 days! Hopefully that's enough of that nonsense. Felt pretty dandy during the middle of the run so I picked up the pace for a few miles.

You've about doubled my miles for the year so far. In my head that means I have a 50% chance of beating you in a race. I need to get up to 75% of the miles you've run so to get that confort level back.

From Tom on Thu, Feb 20, 2014 at 14:12:08 from 137.65.56.2

Not to fear Terry. The stupid bum-itis has kept me running slow most all the time all winter so I've gotten real accustomed to that pace and when I try to speed up it feels like I should be going 1 min/mi faster than what the watch says.

Once again you ran more monthly miles than I did. However, I closed the gap quit a bit.

Ya know, you should run the last half of the SLC marathon with me to warm your legs up for Boston.

From Tom on Mon, Mar 31, 2014 at 16:41:57 from 137.65.56.2

Terry too bad I'll be arriving in Boston about the time you're running SLC. But I don't think you'd like the 9-10 min/mile pace I've been running lately to keep the bum-itis happy.

Had a nice time pacing this race with Kimi. Perfect weather and a fun although challenging course. I was glad we were pacing and not racing. My ultra training book says I need to get used to running slower than I'm used to so this run and Boston in 9 days with lots of 10 min miles should be just dandy. The slower pace makes my ornery hamstrings happy too so that's nice.

We had a couple runners stay with most of the way and sometimes a few others would join in. I think most of them finished 30s or so ahead of us. Nice!

From Tom on Mon, Apr 14, 2014 at 12:46:39 from 137.65.56.2

Terry I have a special ultra training plan just for you.... Make sure to run low mileage, do lots of sprints and short fast intervals on the track, don't worry about doing any long runs especially on trails, don't worry about drinking during the race. Do all of that and you'll probably STILL beat me!

Today was a PR day! Slow marathon PR that is! Ran with Kimi and Alan Nybo on a gorgeous day in Boston, albeit a bit warm for running. Between being sick all week and an ornery knee Kim was in some serious pain around 15 or 16 miles and it turned into a jog/walk after that. She begged me to run on ahead but with what happened last year and running together then but being stopped a half mile from the finish I REALLY wanted to cross the finish line together. So it was an easy decision for me to stick with her and just enjoy the day, the race, and the absolutely amazing Boston spectators. Wow what a rush to be at this event on this special year. We had already fallen in love with the city and it's residents after last year and all the kindness they showed us but I think we even feel more connected after this year's race. And seeing Meb win the Men's race was another bonus.

Also enjoyed a few days to do a lot of walking around the city, mingling with other runner's and making new friends, visiting some museums, eating too much good stuff, and just generally enjoying ourselves. And I can now honestly say that I went to Harvard AND MIT!

Fun, fun stuff!

Terry I'm leaning toward the Buffalo Run in March. Here is the link to the website: http://www.buffalorun.org/ .

It's a relatively easy course without all the extreme elevation changes that many ultras have. Plus I like that they sponsor training runs on the course throughout the year leading up to the race.

No run today to give the legs some recovery time after the first Canyon run of the year yesterday. I think the hill repeats I've been doing helped me not be to be quite as sore as Kimi.

I did get in a long walk in morning and 30 min XT + core at the gym in the afternoon.

Tried something different today. Went with Tyler S and a few others up near Payson Lakes and ran/hiked up to trail to the top of Loafer Mtn and back down. Super hard in places but the cool temps, wild flowers, mountain goat encounter, and views at the end made it worth it. I marked the 12 miles as easy but they were anything but. Took us 4 hours and felt like a 20 miler. Somehow managed NOT to face-plant on the way back down but I'm thinking I'll be might sore in some new places tomorrow.

Down in St George. Massively sore after the trail running initiation on Saturday. Decided to bag the run and go for a 5 mile walk instead. I'll probably get some swimming in later as well.

Desert trail run/hike in the early morning trying to beat the heat in St George. Attempted the 3rd ravine loop which is supposed to return via the 2nd ravine but somehow I ended up coming down the 1st ravine which doesn't have much of a trail. Strangely enough I ran into a highschool classmate and her husband coming up the ravine while I was going down.

Also as payback for me not biffing it during the Saturday run the running gods decided I should wipe out today. Wasn't even doing anything hard just walking along the trail and I'm suddenly rolling along the ground. Other than a few scrapes and scuffs I seem to be fine. Actually felt pretty good for most of the run/hike.

So this was the fun for today.... wake up at 4:10 and get running gear on, drive to Salem and arrive at 4:45, climb in a suburban with 11 other runners and head toward the top of Payson Canyon, dropping bags/coolers full of drinks at various spots along the way. About 1/2 way up Payson Canyon it starts to rain. Just below Payson Lakes it starts to pour, sheets of rain & hail, wind, completely crazy. At the Payson Lakes campground turnoff we park and wait for 10-15 minutes in hopes the weather will improve. No letup at all so we head down the canyon, pick up our drinks, still raining in Payson city so we head back to Salem, get in our vehicles, go home, and go to bed. Then around 7:30 Ludlow texts that he's going out at 8am, weather looking better. Get up, get ready again, go outside to find that miraculously the weather has done a complete 180 and it's sunny & cool, near perfect for running. Meet up with various runners from the earlier failed canyon run and we have a dandy run.  I let Dan trick me again and end up with 21.5 miles instead of the planned 20 miles, and that's even with walking another mile at the end to get to the van. Get home around noon. A dandy Run4Fun day!!

But I'm still chicken to do any kinds of strides or abruptly speed up. But don't seem to be any worse for the wear pushing sub-7 pace on the downhill runs so I'll continue to do that and call that my speed-work/tempo running. Starting to get excited for SGM. Nice and cool, probably the coolest morning we've had for quite a while in the upper 40's. Actually pretty nice temps for this type of workout. Felt pretty good, I seem to like running the uphill a lot better when it's dark and I can't see what's coming. I do think the uphill workouts the last few weeks are definitely helping us. I probably should push it a little harder on the uphill like Kim does but I can't seem to resist pushing the downhill instead. Feeling pretty good about this run as I ended up a bit faster than my fastest time from last year which was just a couple of weeks before my sub-3:08 finish at BCM. It will be interesting to see what happens at St George with my oddball training this year of lower mileage, no speedwork, no races, and no tempo runs other than these occasional faster downhill canyon runs. After a fun summer full of dandy Payson canyon runs we did our final run for the year. The transport van was packed to the gills as it usually has been each week. In case you're wondering you can squeeze 12 or maybe 13 runners in your average minivan if you're motivated and not too concerned about comfort (or safety) :) I decided to do an uphill warmup mile solo before joining the rest of the gang for the downhill fun stuff. Stuck with Ken again and kept most miles under 7 min pace. Always a little sad to be done for the year. But always happy to have the legs in tip-top shape for downhill running going into STG. Now it's taper time!

Final taper 3 miler. Was going to do this run yesterday morning but heard raindrops so I promptly went back to bed and decided today would be dandy :). Hoping for sub-3:25 and BQ for StG. Here is my per-mile pacing plan to get me there. This is roughly based on Andy Browning's racesmartpacebands.com recommendations as well as my prior race experiences. As always I reserve the right to throw out the plan entirely come race day and do something else, usually something really dumb. If I'm feeling good around mile 14/15 and/or 20/21 I'll push the pace a bit and see if I can sneak under 3:20 or even get close to 3:15. For any others shooting for similar goal time I'd love to work together and see if we can help each other out!

Not a pretty day for me. Thought I should be able to pull of a BQ (3:25) even though I'd only really trained to finish a marathon, not to race one. Guess since I had only done in any MP training miles on downhill, and nothing on flat or uphill, no tempo runs, no speedwork, it should have come as no surprise that other than the steep downhill sections I didn't have much umph on the flat/uphill sections. I could tell during Damarron Valley that the miles were feeling harder than they should which usually means I'm going to die between miles 16 & 20. And that is exactly what happened. Ran out of gas around mile 17 and couldn't seem to find any motivation to keep me from taking plenty of walking breaks and pretty much just jogging it in. I got a little boost  coming into town with the crowds cheering and I think I did a mile or 2 around 7:30 pace but other than that I just loafed after mile 17 to the end.

Oh well guess it's always good to learn a lesson. Wish I would have done what I was considering a couple weeks ago - not even wear a watch and just run by feel. But it's all good, time to move on, focus on turning 50 and running 50 miles! Already signed up for Buffalo Run 50 miler in March.

Had a great time spending time with Kim and Terry and his neighborhood gang of SGM 1st timers who stayed with us out our condos. I think they all did pretty well most everyone got PRs and Terry was not too far off the sub-3 goal. Congrats to all those who finished with or without style points!

So hard to believe I've actually been alive 50 years! Seemed like a good excuse to run 50K on a cold November morning. Mother Nature misunderstand my request for it to be 50 degress and instead gave us a brisk 15 when we started at 5:30am!. But at least the canyon wind was minimal and after the sun came out it warmed up to a 'balmy' 30 degrees or so by the time we finished around 11am.

I was the only one to cover the full 50K but it worked out nicely so I never had to run alone as Kim and a few other runners ran various portions of the course with me. Carolyn and Chad started with me and we were soon joined by Wan Ho. Kim did an amazing job as my pit crew, providing tons of beverage and treats and even an older-that-dirt cake with oreo 'dirt' and gummy worms! She also joined in at various points throughout the run including at the finish. Thanks babe!!!

Wan was also a trooper and ended up running around 17 miles with me, with Melissa joining me just before Wan finished and running the last 14 with me and sometimes Kim. I actually felt pretty good the entire run. Kept the running pace in the comfy 8:45-9:45 range but also took plenty of walk breaks and re-fuel breaks so the actual pace overall was around 10:50 and I finished in around 5 1/2 hours. I think I might just be able to warm up to these longer, slower ultra-type races. Looking forward to the Buffalo 50 mile run in March with Terry-old-Bean!

Nice to see you were able to get the 50K in without injuries and with some great support. It gives me more hope that I can do such a feat. I was considering doing the run with you but my work just got crazy the last few weeks.

The nice thing about this 50 miler in March is that I'm not setting any expectations for myself other than to go easy, enjoy the ride, and to finish.

From Tom on Thu, Nov 20, 2014 at 16:28:34 from 160.7.247.191

Terry I'm thinking I might like this idea with these ultra distances of not worrying about pace or taking walking breaks whenever you feel like. Looks like we both have similar expectations for the March 50 miler. I think the cutoff is 12 hours so I may just come in not much quicker than that. So as long as we average around 14 min/mi pace we should be good. I think we can handle that.

Oh oh you're on to me Terry. Hey did you get the email about the monthly training runs that the race director puts on for this Buffalo run? First Saturday of every month. Jan will be around 20 miles I think. You need to come do these, I've been surprised how much harder trail miles are compared to asphalt miles and also surprised how many hills there are in this race. Went to Herriman and ran with the great Wan Ho and gang. Felt good the first half but the later miles were tough. Not sure what the problem was but glad to get in the miles and get er done for the day and the week.

Went out with Kim on a cold, sloppy road run. Felt pretty sluggish.

So Kim and I had a nice adventure this morning in St George. Plan was to run the Bearclaw Poppy trail 11 mile loop that I had done once before. But made the decision to run it in the reverse direction than usual so that we would be in town while it was still dark. Ended up getting lost in the middle of nowhere. 11 miles turned into over 18 with some pretty rough terrain at times. Very relieved to finally run into another runner and figure out where the heck we were! Actually I thought it was kind of fun. Not sure if Kim would agree.

Went out with Kim again on the same route we got lost on Saturday. But this time everything went fine. Can't figure out why we got so messed up on Sat. I quite enjoy this loop route.
