22 miles - AP: 7:58

(7:49, 7:45 -- stink, I know better than starting out this fast, I will pay for it later, 7:53, 7:56, 7:56, 7:52, 8:04, 8:02, 8:12 - need to get  my  head back in the game, 7:59, 7:58, 7:54, 7:53, 7:56, 7:55, 7:59, 7:55, 7:57, here come the hills - 7:57, 8:37, 7:58, 8:11 - I have nothing left in the tank. Solid effort.)

Lower left leg pain. But with the taper I am sure it will be fine. I did have to stop and stretch for about 30 seconds to 1 minute about 4 times though. My pace would have likely been slower had I not had those breaks. I am certain the pain is a result of me pushing too hard this week. What was I thinking? It is so easy to push when you feel you are improving and are not in pain. It is hard to stop before you have signs of danger. A lesson I am still learning. The bright side is that I was able to still run at a solid effort.

Ran out of fluid at about mile 18. Stink.

Threw in some hills the last four miles. Home-strech Hill twice, Oreo Center Hill once, and Puke Hill once. I walked down Puke Hill because I was afraid that steep downhill would aggravate my leg even more, but was able to run up it.

Took gu every 6 to 7 miles as Smooth suggested.

Hit the wall around mile 20 and was very thankful that I had to stop for a traffic light. I am really hoping that with a proper taper and some race day adrenaline that I will be able to hold this pace for another 4.2 miles. There is no way I would have been able to do it today.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!!! :)

Nice run, your splits look great! I did what you did today. That is rested for a while when I got really tired. I am not sure what is better - to keep an even pace or to rest and be fast. I know looking at my splits I have a lot more confidence going into the race even if it is false confidence because of the rest breaks

Taper???? Who needs a taper when you can run this pace during training...I don't know what your target pace is but if you don't nail at least 7:45 pace on this marathon, I will be VERY surprised (pressure is on). Oh my goodness, you and that buddy Smooth are absolute Queens of the Mountain!!

Nice job and heed the advice...ease up and Do Not get Injured!

From DonGardinero on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 18:49:57 from 75.162.183.250

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!!! I think the taper will do your body some good. Nice job!!! You are SO ready!!!

From Rhett on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 19:54:37 from 74.32.219.227

I can't believe you are able to hold your race pace for 22 miles during a training run at the end of a long hard training week. No way I could. With the taper and race day magic. You really should be able to go a good 20 to 30 seconds faster than you go on a long run at this point in training. Just get that leg feeling 100% before the big day and you will have no problems. That means cut back and take it a bit easy over the next few weeks. There isn't much you can do to improve fitness now with 3 weeks to go... only things you can do that will make you slower and not rested and healthy.

From Andy on Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 21:05:30 from 198.60.114.178

It is so fun to see so many of you improving so much. This is going to be a great year for you, Smooth, Kathie and Rhett. I will have to come out and meet you guys next time you do a group run now that our long runs are at the same pace. I will pass on some great advice that somebody gave me, "Baby that leg!".

From Teena Marie on Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 00:42:37 from 174.52.45.85

Kathie -- All I know is that I am glad it is over. When my leg started hurting I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get my last long run in. I am very grateful that I was able to! :) Headed over to your blog now, I checked earlier but nothing was up.

Jefferey -- If I can just keep this pace for 26.2 miles I will be MORE than happy!!! If I can hit an 8:11 pace I will be more than happy!!! From what I hear about Boston it can be a tougher course. All I know is that I want to run strong and have fun. So I will definitely be easing up now!!! :)

Dale -- I definitely need the taper. Before today's run I have had very very very little pain. None really to speak of. So I was shocked when this came up. That being said, I am optimistic that in a handful of days it will be gone if I handle it right. Thanks for all of the encouragement. :)

Rhett -- 20 seconds faster per mile!!! There is NO WAY!!! But the thought makes me smile!!! The goal right now is to get my leg back into tip-top shape. My compression sleeves for my lower legs that I ordered came in today and I went to pick them up. I was freaking out a bit because it was after my long run and I was in pain. The guy at the running store told me to relax, "that the hay is in the barn" now that my 22-miler is complete. That made me feel better. I think I might even skip a couple of runs and crosstrain more this upcoming week.

Andy -- Same pace nothing!!!! I saw your pace today!!!!! Especially those MP miles!!!!! :) And you better believe that I am babying my leg!!! Icing as I type! :)

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 00:59:23 from 174.23.251.49

SSF ~ Just got home and immediately came to your blog! WOW!!! I knew you'd push yourself to the MAX on this run. EXCELLENT effort and AWESOME pace! SO FAST and SO IMPRESSIVE, hills at the end and all! You are a ROCK STAR! I am so excited for you! Yep, hay is in the barn. You're smart...you know what to do to baby that leg. You are going to run the BEST race of your life! I can feel it in my bones! LOVE YOU!

From AmberG on Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 02:11:12 from 64.255.88.27

What an amazing long run and pace!!! I think this should give you some great confidence! You are going to ROCK IT at BOSTON!!! I'm so excited for you !!!

From vinh on Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 17:24:54 from 71.68.254.197

Killer run Teena! You are gonna blow Boston out the water after a good taper. You are amazing!

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 21:28:06 from 71.219.89.155

Now, taper away and take care of any lingering pain and all will be well!! I think it is funny that you say you will pay for it later, but you run a 22 mile sub-8 training run. You are absolutely nuts!

Wish my 22 miler was over, dang! Now I have to sit and think about it all week and DREAD it.

From KP on Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 21:35:27 from 98.81.1.33

NICE RUN! You'll easily be able to do that last 4 miles in a race. The adrenaline will be pumping and people all around you will be running! Enjoy your taper...

From RivertonPaul on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 11:13:09 from 67.42.27.114

Please take care of yourself. You have worked so hard.

From fly on the Wall on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 16:01:23 from 204.113.19.47

WOW! I've never even thought of running 22 miles at race pace for training. Does anyone else do this?

I can't wait to "watch" you run Boston on my computer! :)

From Julie on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 22:49:03 from 174.23.54.16

You are going to do so well in Boston. I am amazed at how fast you can do those long runs. My sister wore those compression socks at St George last year and she loved them. Enjoy your taper. You deserve it.

From MarcE on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 15:24:39 from 206.225.68.62

Wow! That is quite a speedy long run. Considering I'm starting 1/2 hour ahead of you you at Boston...I'm still going to be wondering when you're going to be passing me. Say "Hi" as you pass me!!!

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 18:37:22 from 174.23.251.49

SSF ~ How's the leg feeling today? Miss you!

From Teena Marie on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 21:56:40 from 174.52.45.85

Thanks everyone!!! Other than the leg pain I felt really good about my last really long run. Unfortunately it caused a flare-up with my compartment syndrome and I am paying for it now. Good thing Boston isn't for 20 days! :)

SSF --

Hi!!! Leg still hurts today. I had Josh work on it last night, and that helped some but the swelling/pressure is not going down nearly as quickly as I would like it to. I went and saw my Anatomy prof about it today. He is seriously a genius. Has been published numerous times and over 10,000 of his photos are in text books around the world. Anyway ... I thought if anyone could help it would be him. He looked at my leg and was immediately able to explaiin everything to me in detail. We joked a bit about having him put a slit in my fascia. He didn't know that I was serious! :) It is feeling a bit better today than it was yesterday, so I am certain tomorrow will even be better. I am taking a few runs off though ... likely the entire week. I will just crosstrain. I think the risk of losing fitness is a better risk to take than the risk of aggravating it even more and jeopardizing Boston. I am trying to be smart! :) (Wow ... that was a long response!)

From Smooth on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 22:24:11 from 174.23.251.49

SSF ~ Sorry the leg still hurts and the swelling is not going down as quickly. You WON'T loose any fitness in one week. You're right about NOT taking a risk in aggravating it more. I am sure it will calm down and "heal" up quickly. Are you sure elliptical doesn't aggravate it?

From Teena Marie on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 22:28:16 from 174.52.45.85

SSF --

It doesn't seem to. Certainly the pool would be the very best place for me to be ... but it is very nice being able to study while I am on the elliptical. I should get my tush in the pool though!

I am missing you!

From RivertonPaul on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 22:32:05 from 72.121.7.29

I just got back from pool running. I need to get you your belt back. I now have my own since I'm a believer in pool running.

From Teena Marie on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 22:35:08 from 174.52.45.85

Paul --

Impeccable timing! That would be AWESOME!!! I am dreading the boring pool runs, but I know that they are good for me. Just let me know how/when I can get it from you and I will force myself back in the pool.

Thank you thank you!

From MarcE on Tue, Mar 30, 2010 at 22:57:52 from 206.225.68.62

Teena..sounds like you've got a smart plan. I'm sure a few days off of running will do you lots of good!
