Although my muscular aches and pain are near gone, as of this morning I still could not breathe well. Yesterday I felt dizzy and light-headed all day. I attributed it to a lack of calories. This morning I felt the same. I decided to call my asthma doc to see if I could just come in and have my breathing checked. Glad I did.

In short, my numbers were HORRIBLE. I knew they would be bad, but not this bad. Even after my inhaler my large airways were functioning at 56% and my small airways at 38%. No wonder I was feeling so dizzy. I was immediately given a breathing treatment (nebulizer with bronchiodilating meds). I got really shaky and a bit nauseated, but it worked. After 10 minutes of treatment I felt like I could take a real breath. They retook my stats, most airways were functioning close to the 90s and my oxygen intake had increased dramatically.

What it comes down to: my pneumonia is cleaning up nicely, but my asthma is being stubborn. They quadrupled my advair intake for 2 weeks, and I have to take my prednisone (I hate that stuff). But if it will allow me to breathe, I will do it.

I asked about exercising, specifically running. He said that I could try as soon as I felt up to it, but that I will likely not make it very far for a couple more weeks.

Come on inflammation ... be gone!!!!

(Since the breathing treatment I feel so so so so SO much better.)

Good job listening to your body and knowing you needed to seek additional medical input. I hope you get well soon.

sorry to hear how badly you have been feeling. what a bummer!! darn those lungs!! Asthma is so on the rise now with children. Wish you didn't have to deal with that. I guess we all have something to deal with when we picked from the hat of sufferings we would endure. Prednisone, the necessary evil. So great when you need it so not great if you needed it long term. Keep us updated. Get well soon!!

Paul~

Thanks. We are so lucky to have modern medicine so easily accessible. :)

Julie~

I am very lucky to have the life I have. Things could obviously be much worse. This is just a very small setback. No biggie! Thank you so much for all of the nice comments. :)

SSF ~~ You are so smart to know that you needed to see the asthma doc. And got proper treatment! Seriously your tiny body is just not big enough to house your big heart and that smart brain of yours!!! :)

I am glad your pulmonary function improved after the nebulizer treatment. Here's to 100% lungs and speedy recovery! Yes, thank heavens for modern medicine! Love you!!!

Maybe now I can catch up with you on the year's mileage.

Maybe not.

Wow, I'm so glad you went in and didn't just keep thinking it was calories. I hope that you feel better soon and can't start running a little bit. Man, all of those are drugs with yucky side effects, sorry you have to go through this. SUMMER COME NOW!!

SSF~

You are so cute with me!!!! I am also glad that I went in. My tiny body is just a bit too weaksauce! :(

Burt~

I triple dog dare you! :) :) :)

Brooke~

You should see my nightstand ... it's pathetic! I look like a druggie. Seriously, let me count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, SEVEN stinkin' prescriptions. That is WRONG!!!! I know I need to breathe, but DANG ... I hate putting all of this stuff in my body.

From Burt on Wed, Feb 23, 2011 at 19:08:08 from 206.19.214.144

That was a slight breach in ettiquete going straight for the triple dog dare.

I didn't want to waste my breath with the progressive build-up!!! -- HA!!!!

Teena, those breathing treatments work wonders. Cody used to have severe asthma attacks when he was younger and we'd always have to take him in for the nebulizer treatments.

We have a nebulizer at home, but the treatments never seemed to work as well as they did at the doctor. Go figure.

Glad you're starting to feel better.

Happy to hear you can breath, it is such a big part of running. I hope you are better soon.

What are you doing with all your free time?

From Doone on Thu, Feb 24, 2011 at 14:53:20 from 184.10.156.75

After reading your comments I am so sorry you have been so sick. I have never had asthma but little Lane has "exercised-induced" asthma and the sounds he sometimes makes trying to breathe are a little frightening.

I am thinking your doc doesn't know you very well though because he should have told you you can't exercise for 3 weeks and then maybe just maybe he would have gotten a good week - 10 days of no exercise out of you:-)

Please take care!! We love you and are praying for a quick recovery.

I'm so glad you were able to get in and get your asthma going in a better direction! My little 6 year old gets colds that go to his lungs (they won't say he has asthma for insurance reasons), but I can see him struggle when he has that tightness and it makes me so sad! I can't imagine how horrible you've been feeling. Get well soon and get back on that road, we've got to do whatever it takes to keep ahead of Burt :)

Kathie~

Breathing is a definite plus. As for my free time ... well, I've mostly just been laying here panicking about all the stuff I don't understand when I try to study. My brain is in need of some serious oxygen (at least that is the excuse I am choosing to believe). Physics test tomorrow ... this ought to prove interesting. :)

Doone~

Asthma is kinda stinky ... but I know some people who have it way worse than me. It usually doesn't even bother me unless I am exercising (but if I take a couple puffs before hand I do fine usually), around smoke of any kind, in the wind, with inversion, or when I am sick. :) I think this is the worst it has ever been though. As Pooh would say, Oh bother.

Rachel~

Hmmmm ... I could fudge some numbers!!!! (Teasing, of course.)
