10k race in Del Rio!!! David and I decided that we would race today. He registered for the 5k and I registered for the 10k. Both races were $20. I don't think I have ever paid $20 for a race at late registration, nice. This was a chipped time race, rare for Del Rio... The chips went around the ankle and were extremely uncomfortable. By the time David and I had warmed up I knew the chip would cause a case of chafing. By the end of the 10k, sure enough, I had chafing around my ankle from the stupid chip. Starting line.... They had mats to run across at the start line BUT they were not set out. They also had a mass start and told the 10k folk to go clear to the back....???? I stayed at the back of the 5k mass. This really bothered me since I had to swim through the 5k folk when the race started. Started running and it was going well until my left shoe was untied. Lame. Had to pull over. It wasn't until well past a mile I noticed I had not started my watch! Rookie mistakes! What was I thinking? The course was challenging, I won't lie. Lots of rolling hills and of course the Beast from the East Texas wind making it's appearance. I maintained the lead for the women for the entire race. I think I was 4th overall. I walked a little at mile 4.5 to let my heart rate fall. Finished in 46 min or a little under. I was actually pleased with my time and performance today. David took 2nd at the 5k with a 19:12 or something like that. I was proud of the hubby for coming off of one of the most stressful years of his life and still being able to run so strong. He really amazes me. We waited around for the results for 2 HOURS!!!!! Then the RD said they had a mis-hap with the results and sent EVERYONE home. ARE YOU KIDDING ME????? Sadly, I was not surprised. Del Rio for ya. Pretty sad that those that performed extremely well did not get recognized. The winner of the 10k ran it in 33 minutes. He was from a running club in Mexico. Too bad I can't hop the border to go and run with what seemed a pretty decent running club.
