This race was for the Iraqi boy and girl scouts, and it came with a free t-shirt.  My goal was to break 21:00, and I did by a couple minutes!  Unfortunately the race was almost a quarter-mile short.

My splits were 6:34, 6:42, 5:44 for 0.87 (6:36 pace) for a time of 19:00 (6:37 average).  I figure worst-case scenario I would've run that last quarter-mile in 1:45 and finished around 20:45, but what can ya do?  I like the races up at Liberty (base just to the north) more because they go around a lake that happens to be about 5K and are always accurate.  Still nice to know I CAN break 21 though!

It was neat to see the Iraqi kids because I haven't even seen a child in 4 months, the young ones were probably my oldest daugher's age.  So a pretty good morning altogether.

Yea! Good job! YOU did GREAT! And, don't worry. In about 2 months, you'll be having lots of time with a four year old and two year old. I'm planning my vacation now.

Great job Joe. I would still count it as a 19 flat 5k. It's not your fault it was short.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 01:15:03 from 195.39.154.10

SJG - I hope your vacation is equally as nice as mine.

Thanks Burt, I agree. Since I knocked about 2:20 off my PR this time, I figure my next 5K should be around 16:40 or so.

I say sprint the last quarter in one minute and break 20!

From SlowJoe'sGrl on Sun, Nov 14, 2010 at 10:14:39 from 184.79.24.255

Joe - There might not be Iraqi children on my vacation, but maybe sun and sand.

Good job on the race!

LOL Burt I like your thinking!

Sweet job, Joe! You 'da man!

From Mike on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 15:19:54 from 69.230.27.123

Imagine how fast you would have gone if you weren't sandbagging!

From SlowJoe on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 16:56:22 from 214.13.130.104

April - come to think of it, you're right...how hard could that have been?

SJG - ignoring that

Thanks BnS and Chris.

Mike - I owe any success I have to sandbagging.

If Chris Solinksy can do it then anyone can do it...right?

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 19:56:02 from 71.219.65.246

Great cause, and it looks like you would have had an awesome 5k time!!! I hate it when the races are short, but finishing a 5k short is actually a blessing. I hate that distance---HATE IT!

From SlowJoe on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 23:19:18 from 195.39.154.10

I'm not going to lie, my initial feeling when I saw the finish line pop up early was relief. The disappointment came after I caught my breath.

From Kelli on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 23:20:38 from 71.219.65.246

I have experienced that same thing.
