| 81F, 53%. 7:43 AP. Normally a tempo day, but I knew it would be ugly and disappointing if I tried. So I didn't. Too hot. And I'm good with that. |

82F, 44%. 8:46 AP. tired trot to the track (best alliteration ever). They had just painted it red/orange, but no lanes yet.
It is supposed to hit 114 degrees today (it was only 112 yesterday), so I doubt I will be doing a workout tomorrow anyway since it's going to be a warm morning. maybe a slow workout, we'll see. |

| 82F, 46%. 7:26 AP. No workouts this week at all so finally, with 2.5 miles to go, I picked up the pace for a little progressive mini-tempo. Last 2.5 were 6:39, 6:29, 3:07. I focused on the uphills, doing surges on each one. |

80F, 71%. 7:44 AP. No run yesterday - we woke up early to get down to Six Flags in Arlington as it opened up for the day to celebrate my daughter's 6th birthday. It was fun - draining, hot fun. Spent 8+ hours at the park as it topped 100 degrees - I had to carry around the 4-year-old half the time, so I think that qualifies as a workout.
Anyway, this morning I went out from the hotel and found some cool places to run - to The Ballpark where the Rangers play, and from there to Cowboy Stadium. Then there was a nice little path down a river so I looped it and then did a lap around Cowboys Stadium. Then the other way doen the trail and back. Ended up with fewer miles than I would've run at home but I was pretty tired from yesterday so it was plenty. |

| 75F, 80%. 7:33 AP. Traded a little heat for a little humidity but it felt nice (it actually rained for a few minutes last night!) Ran mostly easy/moderate, with some strides and hill sprints at the end. Trying to psyche myself up for some 400s on Friday - it's been awhile, and I am trying to stay in touch with 5k pace better than I have in the past. |

72F, 59%, NNE 10 mph. A little cooler today. 12 x 400m at the track, 200m active recoveries.
Average was 1:25.6 (1:31, 1:22, 1:28, 1:24, 1:23, 1:25, 1:26, 1:27, 1:25, 1:27, 1:26, 1:23). For my sub-18 5K goal, I need about 1:26, so this was a little under that, which is good. There was a definite headwind on the backstretch which hurt a little so a good effort, all in all.
Ran in my new racing flats and they tore up the back of my heels...bummer. Now I have some blisters to contend with (not to mention a bloody sock). All my other shoes have little grooves or something similar in the back, I guess to prevent that from happening, but not these for whatever reason. Maybe I can cut these or something and try to modify them myself. |

70F. 8:10 AP. Little by little, it's cooling off. Lots of 60's for lows in the forecast next week. The timing is good as well - in 2 weeks I will start to ramp up for the Tulsa marathon.
I was just doing a little reading about the 1904 Olympic marathon. Really funny stuff - highlights include the first instance of doping (using rat poison), someone who got a ride in a car for 10 of the miles, and a starving Cuban guy who would have done better but stopped to eat rotten apples at an orchard and got sick. |

70F, NNE 11 mph. 7:10 AP. My 1 workout for the week: 6 easy followed by 5 tempo. Went ok, but still felt tougher than I wanted it to.
The 5 tempo miles averaged 6:36. Splits - 6:42, 6:38, 6:35, 6:32, 6:32. The smooth-looking progression kind of belies the struggle it actually was, but maybe I'll do better when it cools off the rest of the way. |

| 78F, 69%. 8:07 AP. Slept in, it was great. Ran at about 9am and it was still relatively cool. Then it rained this afternoon which has become an extremeley rare sight around here. Almost as rare as me putting a shirt on to run. |

| 69F, 78%. 8:02 AP. Sluggish again, so I cut it short. Tomorrow is by far, weather-wise, the best day for a workout this week so I'm attempting to recover in time for it to get in some 10K pace work. |

| 63F, 99%, thick fog. A little ticked, because as I stepped out the door my Garmin battery read 0%. Pretty sure I charged it recently, but it died right away. Worst possible day for that to happen too - I still went to the track and did 6 x 800m, on short (200m active) recovery, at what I thought might be 10K effort. I had a really specific time (3:02) that I wanted to hit, that corresponds to sub-38 pace for my race next month. Oh well, maybe I did it, maybe I didn't. After the intervals I did an all-out 200m sprint - pretty sure I set the new world record but the world will never know because my watch was dead. I probably need to get a cheapo watch I can use as a back-up for timing splits. Anyway, I got my legs moving faster than normal, so that's something. |

72F, 98%. 7:37 AP. Thick, sticky slog on my normal 15-mile loop, which includes 3-4 miles of dirt (today = mud) roads. I was going to do a bunch of pickups on the way home but only felt like doing 3 or 4 short ones. The legs seemed to be stuck in invisible mud (after the real mud got kicked off). Good enough, I say.
12 weeks out from Tulsa now. Time to start ratcheting up a bit...within in a couple weeks, this 15-miler will be the normal Wednesday run....eep. |

66F, 71%, N 11 mph.. 7:22 AP. You know it's marathon training season when you wake up at 4:30am so that you can get in a 10-mile warmup before a workout.
I ran the last 4 miles hard, at a respectable 6:22 AP (6:35, 6:26, 6:15, 6:11). Felt great to be able to do that after a summer full of weak/failed tempo runs. The cool air obviously helped a lot today. |
