Well, I eventually made it here. It was 115 when I got off the plane in Baghdad...ouch.  The low tonight is 91.  So I sought out the gym and did 5 ez on the treadmill @ 7mph (8:34 pace).  Didn't feel too bad considering the lack of sleep I've gotten the past few days.  I guess I'll be makng friends with the cardio room; they can't cool it down quite enough, but it beats running outside for now.  I only hope I can stomach longer distances on it - I think the 5 today was a record for me but I'd like to eventually do 7 or 8 a day until I can start running outside in a couple months.

Hey, good first run, especially considering the heat, low sleep, and jet lag! (And, if it is any consolation, since a treadmill is less jaring and doesn't have cambers like roads do, it might make it easier to recover from that hip/glute/? injury you had.)

Glad you made it OK, keep us posted. Would love to hear any details you are able to discuss about what it is like there. 115, wow.

Awesome Joe! I'm glad you made it safely! 115 degrees--I guess I can't whine about heat anymore. Can you listen to music? That helps with the dreadmill. I always start the treadmill at 7mph too--and then inch it up slowly depending on how I feel(or just leave it there if I feel tired)--it is easier to handle when I speed it up a little bit at a time. Glad to see you can blog and look forward to following along!

Holy &*(&(&($% 115! That's crazy. Glad you made it safely. Good luck with the tm training. Be safe! Look forward to hearing from you in the months ahead.

Cookie Legs - I think you're right about the TM being good to clear away any lingering injuries. Hadn't thought about it like that, thanks!

Flat - It's not too bad as deployments go, you just have to have low expectations for your living arrangements. I'm at an Army base in the green zone (big secure area in Baghdad) and work at one of Saddam's palaces. It's actually kinda cool. If I get my hands on a camera I'll take some pics.

April - I'm nervous about getting used to running with music and then end up needing to have it later. Does that happen or am I making it up?

Rye - thanks. The highs are supposed to hit the low 120s this weekend. In the sun (there's no shade) it's more like 130; it really is kind of ridiculous!

I've always had the same fears about music-dependence, but in my opinion music with the treadmill is almost a must to break up the tedium, and then when you get outside you don't need it at all because the boredom is not a factor like it is on the treadmill. I don't miss music at all when I run outside--but it has become a survival tool for the treadmill and my brick I like to stare at.
