Well, I think I decided that 242 more days is a really long time to wait until my next marathon.  I might still end up waiting anyway, but I am looking for one in September or early October, preferably within 1-day driving distance, that isn't too hot.  There's one in Tyler, TX on October 9th (close to Danielle's hometown) but that one will be hot and hilly.  I'm probably asking the impossible, but if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Hopefully you find a good marathon to do, but maybe if you don't you can concentrate on the 10K to 1/2 marathon distance until you go for another PR in the marathon. Those distances don't seem so terrible in the heat.

I don't blame you - I need a goal to keep me going.

Marathonguide.com is the only place I know where to look and I am sure you have been combing through it. It depends on what a "day" of driving means to you as well.

Must be something in New Mexico or Colorado, but there will probably be altitude. To get away from altitude you probably have to go straight north quite a ways.

Hmmm ... Sept marathon within driving distance of TX that is not too hot ... I will get back to you after the arrival of the next ice age! lol

October 23rd may be later than what you are looking for, but you might consider Albuquerque, they say it is flat and fast:

If that does not work for you, Tracy makes a good suggestion too!

Two days of driving will open up many chances for you. Head up north to Gods country and the opportunities are endless! One day of driving.....hummm gotta agree with JG...

Well, the Praire Fire Marathon in Wichita...I hear there will be less corners this year...it's flat...you will have a free place to stay.

Thanks Tracy, focusing on the half this fall is definitely a good option.

DH - yeah I've been doing some research, for sure.

Flat - fortunately we're already at around 1800' here in Abilene so I have a small head start elevation-wise. I don't remember elevation being an issue when I ran in Wyoming last year (4500' I think) but I also wasn't trying to do a full marathon. Good point.

JG - thanks for the tip, looks like a good race - it's on the list of maybes.

Rye - yeah, I know... I'm still not at a point where I can justify spending too much on a marathon yet when there are options that are closer.

April - thanks, good call! It's on the list.
