My legs are trashed.  I think running on all the concrete in my lightest pair of flats is going to make for a long recovery - my first 2 marathons were in trainers.  But, who cares?

Now the obligatory post-marathon analysis and thoughts, before I have to start looking forward again.

Here are the 5K splits:

Ok, I thought my watch was acting funky as we were going through downtown at the end.  This tells me that the last mile could not have been as slow as Garmin thought, as I actually maintained basically the same pace for the final 2.195K (7:07/mile if you do the math).  Same effort given the headwind, I think.  Garmin just shortchanged me there at the end as we went through the tall buildings.  Makes sense because I was carrying an extra tenth of a mile on my watch (compared to the mile markers) and then somehow lost it in the last mile.  So, the good news is I don't think I ever hit any wall.  That is good to know.

Before I figured that out just now, I was thinking there was nothing I could have done to get sub-3, since I thought I was in the process of bonking at the end (stupid Garmin).  Now I wonder if maybe if I had stayed and drafted with the pace group, it would've been a different story.  But in the end I don't care.  Now that the monkey is off my back, I can go for broke trying to crack 3 hours next time.

This was the most fun part of the marathon:

I guess it is not the norm to run even-paced splits, although you would never know that with all the awesome runners that do it on FRB.

Looking ahead to the next marathon before I get depressed about this one being over, I am thinking about a few possibilites for this Spring, including Big D (Dallas in April - hot?), Oklahoma city in late April, Arbuckles to Ardmore (Oklahoma, April 1st), and Eisenhower (Kansas, mid-April) since we will probably live closest to those 4.  Will probably decide a lot later.  Gotta run another one before summer hits.  Then, I will probably run a different Fall marathon (not Houston) to give me a nice full training period before Boston.  Maybe Route 66 or White Rock...

Finally, here's the finish line video for a little entertainment (gun time 3:01:26).  I was a little excited.

Awesome fist pump at the end! You looked stoked and rightfully so. Big congrats and awesome consistency in that race. Rest your feet and lower legs and eat some junk!

Were you thinking about punching Oprah?

From Dan on Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 21:10:42 from 24.209.83.20

Love the video, you should be excited. Very cool. I was interested in your finish and glad you came up with that Garmin info. I was going to ask you some fueling questions since I seem to run that last mile the fastest (last two marathons anyway- I attribute that to our 10 mile warm ups :) and fuel), but if you got it worked all that's even better. Congrats again and feel free to punch Oprah.

I was just "impressed" by your race and the consistancy but now, after looking at this extended report, I'm "REALLY IMPRESSED"...!!! Only 3 seconds difference on all of the splits...!!! I can't run that even of splits on the treadmill :-)

Loved your video! I am so excited for you! I know that feeling. I felt like I was on a high for 2 weeks. Congrats!!!

Whats up..... you think you need a day or two to rest???? By the way, loved the video.. fist pumping is sooo awesome!

Acorn - thanks, no problem there, I've been on a fast food diet since we've gotten back.

Burt - yes. I mean no.

Dan - yeah I was thinking fuel too, but you're right, those 10-mile warmups are key!

IJR - thanks man, it definitely helps when every mile is flat!

Steam - it's almost too bad we have to come back down to reality.

Rye - yeah this one took a toll for sure, long recovery; definitely left it all out there.

Cool video, next time I expect 10 push ups at the end. :-)

Ryan Hall said he was wearing flats and expected his legs to be trashed, while Shalane switched to a more substantial shoe because of the concrete. Who is right, who is wrong? One never knows about these things. But yeah, your legs will be sore for a while.

Spring marathon, huh? This subject came up in our running group. I ran 3 last year and Boston this year - that is 4 marathons in a 14 month period. You can do it, but be prepared to be mentally tired and drained. This Boston training is not easy because of that. If it were not Boston I was training for I would not do another one for a while. Of course, you are a young pup so maybe you can handle it better than me.

Again, congrats on a phenomenal race.

dh - yeah I'd like to get into a cycle of 1 spring and 1 fall marathon, making them a bit more evenly spaced. Houston is just right in the middle of running season (makes for a short turn to the next race), so I think I might not do it next year.
