Personal:

I've been running since high school (mid-1990s) and do pretty well when I'm focused on a goal. My main problem  is running consistently when I'm NOT training for something specific. I'm an attorney, and I've been married to my husband, also a runner, for 5 1/2 years. We live in Phoenix, Arizona.  We had a beautiful baby girl, Caroline, in August 2009.

It is getting HOT!  The first 3-4 miles were fine, and then we slowed down.  I felt sluggish, and I think it was from the heat.  It was 74 degrees when we started and it's 88 now (I finished about an hour ago).  Total time was 1:49:18, average pace of 9:56.  We were sub-10:00 pace for a while, but slowed down to 10:00 and sometimes slower when it started getting hot.  The last mile was 9:15, though.

I ran with my normal group, but there were only four of us today.  Two others are also training for St. George and want to BQ (3:45 for them).  I figure if I train for 3:45, I'm going to go for BQ(3:40), but I'm just not there yet.  So I haven't decided what my goal will be.  I think I'll just try to PR (sub-3:54) and go for BQ in a winter marathon.  Right now I'm on track for a 4:00 marathon, but I know I'll get faster.  We shall see...

I saw my husband out there, which is always fun.  He runs with a different group in Scottsdale.  It's a great group, but a 25-minute drive to get there, and they don't start until 6:30.

Keep training with the faster girls, this is a good way to get faster yourself. You are doing great and if you keep it up I think you will be there by SG.

MichelleL suggested the PF Changs RnR marathon. How is the course? Did you like it? I think we will do it this year, it would be fun to meet you if we do.

I admire you for running in the heat! It seems to drain my energy a lot of the time. I am so sorry that you had to deal with being robbed. A friend of mine had that happen to him a few years ago and it affected him for quite awhile. I'm glad to see you are still running and keeping high spirits.

Josse, I have run PF Chang's 3 times, and the course is great. It is very flat, with lots of aid stations and support. Miles 22-25 are pretty desolate as far as spectators go, and there is a freeway overpass at about mile 23. The weather has been perfect every year except 2007, when it was FREEZING! This year, it was bigger, and we got to the start with only a few minutes to spare. That was my own fault, though. I'll probably do it again next year. It would be great fun to meet up! I'll make you pasta or pizza at my house!

Christina, I'm doing much better but did not have such high spirits earlier this week! I took two days off. :-( i'm glad to be back to my normal routine!

I got out at 5:15 this morning to take advantage of the cooler temps, but I must admit the heat still got me a little. I just can't seem to recover from these summer runs. I have been exhausted ALL day!

You did awesome with the heat! I hate running in the heat too. I am getting spoiled here with our cooler morning weather.

I'll trade you running on the National Mall and in the humidity of DC for the beautiful desert trails and dry heat of Phoenix any time... well... no, maybe not... :)

Great job out there!

Hi Shauna -- it looks like we will be moving to Tucson in October, so we will be neighbors! I am not (and I repeat NOT) looking forward to running in the summer, but winter will be be pretty nice.

Maybe a 2 hour drive to Flagstaff is in order?

Lucia, most of my long runs are along a man-made canal, not in the pretty desert (snakes, scorpions, etc.-scary!)

Bonnie, welcome to AZ! You are moving at the right time-October is wonderful! LaurenO and some others are FRB runners in Tucson. Yes, Flagstaff is a wonderful place to run-that's where I ran cross-country in high school. Road trip!
