Tour de Draper with Rob Bladen:

I wanted to get in a long run this morning to make up for my horrible week. My friend Rob wanted to run with me, but he is getting ready for UVM so he only wanted to do about 10. We met at the Orson Smith trailhead in Draper at 6:30 am and started uphill on the BST going south. At the trail fork we went right and hit the Gasline trail which eventually took us to Ghost Falls. Rob was running pretty fast and I was hoping he wasn't planning on keeping the pace the entire run because I am not feeling 100% yet. I kept up with him for the most part though.

We went up to the top of Ghost Falls and then took a quick break. The weather was perfect. It was overcast with a slight breeze that felt great. We went east to Canyon Hollow and followed that until he hit Broch's trail and then at the trail junction we stopped to take a gel. We then got onto Ann's trail and got into a good groove. There were so many cyclists on the trail today and some of them were a bit annoying as they would come flying down the trail and not even attempt to move or slow down. DBs! Luckily most of them were pretty cool, but I have never seen so many bikes on the trail.

We ran to the tunnel and then took a right and went back to the BST where it was back uphill to the trail junction. At the trail junction we decided to go right (uphill) instead of running the mile downhill back to the cars, so we could get in a little more mileage and some more elevation. We hit the trailhead in1:47 for just under 11 miles. Rob was done, but I needed more miles so I decided to head over to Ann's trail to go up View Benchmark. I drove over to Ann's and took a gel and hydrated. There were some ladies at the trailhead that looked confused and asked me for directions to Ann's and I told them to just follow me. I put on my ipod and got into a good groove. I wasn't as fast as normal, but I still felt great. The first mile clicked by and I noticed the ladies were well below me on the other side of the canyon. The run up to the VB trail was nice and easy, but when I got to the VB trail there was a dude running right behind me just starting up. I hate getting passed on the trails so I cranked up the pace a lot. I was thinking this guy has no idea I am 13.5 in, so I can't look like a wuss.

I kept a strong pace up to the big hill and he was still about 100 yards back. I power hiked the lower part of the hill while I took a gel, but it was quick and I noticed him gaining ground, so I picked up my pace and ran the rest of the way to the top with only a few short power hikes. I reached the top and he was nowhere in site. I crushed him! Now he was running in jean shorts and high top basketball shoes, but I was still pleased with myself for pushing it up. Haha. I was up in 51 minutes, which is slow, but the run up the VB trail was about as fast as I normally do it.

The run back down was tougher because my legs were getting tired. At one point I thought I was pushing pretty good, but I looked at my watch and I was only at a 10:00 pace. The last two miles I did manage to keep it in the 9's and high 8's and other than my hammy getting really tight I felt pretty good. With about 1/4 of a mile to go I noticed a huge snake ahead covering the entire trail. It looked like a rattler, but it didn't have a rattle and it was the biggest snake I have ever seen in the wild. I had to bushwack around it because it wouldn't move. I finished feeling good with just under 19 tough miles and a lot of vert. I got back to my car and saw a text from my 12 year old telling me she just got Justin Bieber tickets. Woohooo!

View Benchmark with Jun:

Perfect run up VB 'smornin with Jun before work. The temperature was very nice, the wind wasn't bad and we had the trail to ourselves. We had a decent pace all the way up, but we didn't push it too hard. We hit the top in 46:00 and it was pretty awesome up there. Those views don't ever get old.

We had a very good pace most of the way down and just enjoyed the morning on the trails. Jun took a spill on the steep rocky section. There is a large pile of loose rocks on one of the steepest sections and it is nearly impossible not to slide a little there and his legs just went out from under him. Luckily it wasn't serious. My legs felt really good today and my hammy didn't get tight at all. It was near perfect out there today and I'm happy we beat the wind/storm.

Mt. Superior South Ridge with Jun and MattVS:

I was up at 3:30 am to climb Mt. Superior via the South Ridge. The S. Ridge is one of the best mountaineering scrambles in the Wasatch and this would be my second time climbing Superior on this route. The route is very prominent from Snowbird and Alta ski resorts and it starts off with some nice scrambling followed by several exposed knife edges and ends with a loose scramble over a pile of rocks at the summit of Superior. If you don't like heights this is not the route for you. It is very exposed and requires several dodgy moves, but there are ample hand holds and as long as you take your time with route finding it never gets too bad (that is relative).

We started just before 5:00 am at Snowbird and it was cold (35ish) and I forgot my gloves. Ahh Shite! We crossed the street and bushwhacked our way up to the lower ridge where there are several ledges to work your way up. The first several hundred feet aren't too bad, but there are a lot of loose rocks and you have to take care and make sure of your hand and feet placements. I was a bit behind the other guys most of the day and the downside was they kicked off some rocks. Jun knocked off a few that I heard coming and I ducked below a bigger rock and could hear them flying down right next to me. Nothing serious. After about 5 pictures with my camera I realized that I didn't have the memory card (shite again) so I would have to take pics with my iphone. Not good.

After about 40 minutes the fun really began as the ridge turns into a knife edge and the scrambling becomes much tougher and a lot scarier. There is plenty of exposure on both sides and I just tried to have good hand and foot placements as I made my way across. About half way up there is a sign dedicated to Hartman Rector, a man that lost his life climbing on this ridge several years back. It is a good reminder of the seriousness of the terrain. I spent most of the morning trying to catch up to the guys and they were nice enough to wait. The serious scrambling went for about an hour although it seemed like we had been on it for hours. There are 2-3 really scary sections and for the first time in a long time I heard Jun say "That is scary" and he said it a few times. He doesn't say that often.

After working our way around the crux section it is a scramble over some very loose rocks up to the summit. The guys got ahead again and they made it to the top and went over to tag Monte Cristo while they waited for me. We all arrived back at Superior at about the same time and I realized I was out of water and my energy was really low, so I took a gel. We took the East ridge back and it is not one of my favorite places in the Wasatch. It is steep and very loose and you have to take it easy with all of the slippery rocks. I hate it, but there aren't many options up there. Again the guys got ahead and waited for me up on a small peak just above Cardiff Pass.

At the pass I emptied several rocks out of my shoes and then we ran all the way back down to the canyon road. Again they got ahead of me, but I wasn't going to run fast with all of the rocks on that trail. The trail ends right at Alta ski resort so I ran the canyon road back to Snowbird. The guys were out of sight by now and just before I reached the parking area they came to pick me up. What an awesome day and experience. The South Ridge is challenging and scary, but it is incredible to work your way up that thing and finish it off. I give it 5 stars. Back down at the LCC park n ride Matt and I both had a dirtbag shower and got ready for work laughing the whole time. It was a perfect morning.

A few pics:

Jun on the crux. You can see him (a tiny red dot near the top in the light).

Lake Mountain wind-fest solo:

I was exhausted last night, so I decided to sleep in this morning and get out for a run in the afternoon. The wind started picking up about noon and by time I got to lake mountain it was rocking my car. Oh well, I figured I would just go for it anyway. The wind hammered me pretty hard the first mile, but it was tolerable. The usual Saturdee necks were out blasting their guns and I hoped they could see me running by. The second mile pretty much sucked as the wind gusts were atrocious and I got blasted by a few walls of dirt and small rocks. As I made my way deeper into the canyon the canyon walls seemed to block the wind quite a lot, so it wasn't too bad until I reached the saddle.

At the saddle it was considerably colder and the wind was biting. I had a long sleeve shirt tied on my waist, but I didn't want to stop to put it on, so I slogged on up to the summit in 1:04, just a few minutes off of my PR. I didn't stay long at all.

I didn't want to push the pace too much on the way down, so after the steeper section I settled into a nice 8:10 pace and kept it most of the way down. Out of the canyon the wind was nasty again and by now sand had penetrated all of my nooks 'n crannies and I was really ready to be done, although I have to say that even with the wind it was a lot more fun than running on the track at the gym.

I woke up early to lift at the gym because I probably won't get home until late tonight. It was crowded in there, but I had a pretty good session.

Check out this cool video that MattVS put together from our Superior climb last week. It is purdy nifty.

Saddleback Mountain in Logan solo:

I'm in Logan for work and I when we rolled into town I started checking the hills for something to climb/run later in the day. I saw a peak that looked a lot like Mt. Wire and it even had the two signature microwave towers on the top, so I checked Google maps and was able to determine that it had a name (Saddleback Mountain) and I got some beta on the trail. Steep!

After work my engineer dropped me off at the trailhead, called me crazy and told me to call if I needed to get picked up. It was pretty hot out and the trail went straight up the ridge. I settled into a nice power hike and it became obvious pretty quick that this was going to suck. Straight up the northwest ridge and no switch backs- Who needs 'em? I kept hoping that at some point there would be a switch back or two, but no they must not believe in them round here. After about 20 minutes my legs were feeling it and I was dripping with sweat.

About a mile up the ridge turns west and there is a really pretty meadow that has recently been burned. There was an eagle flying high and the views were impressive. Gods country. At this point the trail becomes less obvious and you go in and around some cliffy spots. There is a little class 3 scrambling, but it isn't bad, just really steep and loose. I really took my time since I was by myself I didn't want to fall and break something.

I completely lost the trail the last 1/4 of a mile and just bushwhacked up to the towers. What a view! After a minute I cruised up to the high point and then took off back down the mountain, but it was slow because this trail is pretty overgrown with loose rocks everywhere. It really wasn't conducive for fast running. On the way down in the steepest section I was blasting my ipod (Dead Mans Party by Boingo) when I got a glimpse of something moving just in front of me... put on the braaaaaaakes. Rattler! The snake was mad and started to strike, but it was about 4 feet away, so no worries. My adrenaline was pumping pretty good and my first thought was to grab my phone to get a few pics, which I did. It slowly slid off the trail and into some rocks, but it stayed in a striking position and let me know that it wasn't happy.

Ok now the rest of the way down I was jumpy and thinking there was going to be a snake next to every rock. Slow! I got off the trail again and had to bushwack back to where I thought it was and eventually found it and then had a nice run down, although it wasn't the best because it was so steep.

At the trailhead I decided to run down the road toward the hotel and made it 3 more miles before my engineer came to pick me up. It was definitely an adventure.

Green Canyon in Logan solo:

I'm still in Logan so I found another really cool trail to run after dinner. The first few miles there are a lot of fire pits and campgrounds and I saw a lot of people out enjoying the nountains. The trail is a nice single track that runs next to a dirt road as it goes up the canyon. There is a dry creek running next to the trail most of the way and the trail crosses the road several times in the first 3 miles. The canyon offered plenty of shade and the temps were much cooler than in the valley below.

The first few miles were tough. I had a HUGE gut bomb in my tummy from all of the crappy food I have been eating, but after that I started feeling really good. The canyon was beautiful and green and I was really enjoying the run. After a few miles I started seeing less people. At mile 3ish I saw a mountain biker going down and after that it was only me the rest of the way up. At about 3.7 I came to the Mt. Naomi trailhead and it was a nice single track in one of the prettiest places I have ever seen. As I ran up the trail it definitely felt a lot more remote and there were no campsites or signs of people anywhere. It was getting darker and it was a touch eerie, but it was really a perfect evening for a run.

At mile 5 I turned around and I had about 30 minutes before it would be getting dark so I opened up the pace and had a really fun cruise back to the car. I kept it under 8 most of the way and my legs felt really good for about 3 miles, but I could feel some fatigue toward the end. I finished just before dark and never had to pull out my headlamp. It was an incredible run on a new trail and I will hit it again next time I am up here.

View Benchmark solo:

I had a really nice easy run up to the summit via Ann's trail. I didn't see anyone on the lower trail and I just got into a good groove and enjoyed the run up. At the VB trail I saw a hiker up ahead and quickly passed him and then ran it up to the summit. I stretched my hammy and started feeling like my energy was lacking, but I didn't take a gel because I figured I would be down quick, but that was a mistake.

The run down was a mess. After only a half mile my energy was very low and I was feeling really depleted. It had been 5 hours since I had anything to eat and I should have just stopped to grab a gel out of my pack, but I didn't and I paid for it the last two miles. I felt pretty crappy running it in and it really slowed me down a lot.

Draper trails with Rob and friends:

My friend Rob invited me to run the Draper trails again with him, so we met at 6:30 am at the Orson Smith trailhead. We also ran with his wife and a couple of her friends. We ran the same route that we did two weeks ago (BST, Gasline, Ghost Falls, Canyon Hollow, Ann's, BST). The weather was perfect for running and the sun didn't hit us until the last few miles.

The story of the day was Rob and I out front pushing the pace with the others a few minutes behind. We were running all of the uphills and the flats and downhills were between 7:20-7:45 most of the morning. We would run to a trail junction and then wait a few minutes for the crew to catch up to make sure they got on the right trail. My legs felt really good the entire run, but my hammy did start to get tight the last few miles, so I didn't push it quite as hard.

Once again there were tons of bikers out and we were constantly trying to avoid them and it was a pain, but the run was so good that I can't say it bothered me too much, although Saturday on this trail system is not the best day to run. The last mile is downhill and Rob and his wife pushed a sub 7 pace the whole way down. I followed them for about a half mile, but my hammy was tight so I cruised in at a 7:15 pace just behind them. It was a really fun run with good friends and the perfect start to my day.

View Benchmark with the fam:

My kids wanted to climb VB with me on Fathers Day, so we waited for it to cool down and started about 7:45 pm. We had a lot of fun and the kids were actually pushing the pace and running because they were excited to get to the top. We stayed on the summit for at least 40 minutes looking for horned toades, taking pics and enjoying the views. The sun set just as we were leaving and we enjoyed the hike down, but my 7 year old complained the last mile and wanted to be carried, but he needs to toughen up, so he walked it in. Best part of my day.

VP is in town again which throws off my schedule. I was out late last night, so I couldn't get in my usual Monday Arms n back session. I had a very busy day planned, so I got up at 5:00 am (I never do that to lift) to hit the weights at the gym. Lots of stink and bad breath flying around the gym in the early morning hours.

Draper night run with Jun and Jsh:

I met the guys at 9:00 pm for the weekly night run. We started at the Coyote Hollow trail by the Draper temple. It was already cool, so I threw on a long sleeve, but as we ran up the trail I quickly warmed up and it seemed like the higher we went the warmer it was. We ran a pretty steady pace just chatting away to Ann's trail where we picked up the trail and went up to View Benchmark. It was the first time that I have ever run every step to the summit. I usually try and run most of it, but I will typically hike the really steep sections, but tonight I wanted to see how I felt after running all of it and it wasn't that hard. It was pretty cold on top, but we definitely took our time tonight taking in the views and we stayed longer than normal.

On the way down we took the Eagle Crest trail which I have never been on before and my already sucky headlamp was so dim that I couldn't see a thing. I haven't changed the batteries since March and I have done two all nighters since then. Haha. It sucked. I spent the next few miles holding my lamp as close to the trail as I could while still maintaning a run. I am surprised I didn't trip. I told Jun if I don't get a new headlamp by the next night run he gets a free kick to my package.

Even with the light issues we had an absolute blast.

It was just too hot for me to get motivated to run on the road last night and since I didn't have time to get to a trail I ran 4 easy miles on the track at the gym. Normally this is fairly perfunctory, but there was a chick in the stretching room that had a wardrobe malfunction more than once when I passed. WOW! I did have to do a double take or three. I'm running in the Wahsatch Steeplechase on Sat, so no running for me today (Friday).

Wahsatch Steeplechase:

The Wahsatch Steeplechase has to be one of the most unique race courses in the state of Utah. It is steep, rugged and challenging and I was really excited to run it. The race starts in Memory Grove and climbs 7.5 miles with over 4,000 ft. of elevation to the summit of Little Black Mountain. From there it is a wicked downhill on some steep technical trails to City Creek Canyon below and then back to Memory Grove. I arrived at the start, got checked in and then hung out for about 30 minutes trying to get loose. It was already warm and I was glad I had on my hydration vest. I chatted with Dan Gardiner for a few minutes while we waited for the gun and I knew he was going to have a great race. My goal was to go under 3 hours, but I knew I would have to run a perfect race to do it and with the warm temps I was getting worried.

My goal was to keep a strong pace all the way to the summit and then really push it on the back half if I was feeling good. I went out pretty fast at the start, but there was a large group that went out really fast and I hung back a bit knowing that there were plenty of steep tough miles ahead. Within a mile I was already passing guys that were walking that had gone out too fast. After about a mile the crowds thinned out some and for the next 2-3 miles I was running with the same group. I was feeling really good so far and really enjoying the run.  I didn't hike at all until the first aid station at the bottom of the Pipeline hill where I took a gel and S-cap as I hiked up the steep slope. At the top I picked up a solid run and held it most of the way to the base of Little Black Mountain. During this section I passed 7-8 runners, but I was also passed by a few dudes that were running pretty fast. I wondered if they could keep up the pace.

At the base of Little Black the trail becomes extremely steep and it is almost a necessity to settle into a hike. I was in a group with about 5 other guys and we just pushed it up about as fast as we could hike, but about 3/4 of the way up I passed 3 of them on a very steep slope. As we crested the ridge I got back into a run and was surprised to see so many people still hiking. The ridge is not an easy run. It is craggy with a lot of rocks and I passed a few more guys on my way to the 'climbing' section. Jun told me that in order to go under 3 hours I would have to be on the summit in 1:45 and as I reached the downclimbing sections just off the summit I was right there at 1:45.

There are two pretty steep down climbs that require the use of both hands and feet and the race website rates them at 5.4, but I would say they are solid 4th class, but not too bad. When I got to the first of these two down climbs there was a small queue of people backed up because a girl was frozen on the climb and wouldn't move. One of the guys behind her started to coach her down and a race volunteer was there trying to help her with her foot placements down below, but she just wouldn't go. It was so frustrating as the minutes clicked by and I couldn't do anything but stand there. Finally she made it down, but then proceeded to not move out of the way and ran to the next down climb where she got stuck again. When it was my turn I quickly found a foot and hand hold and jumped down within a few seconds, but I realized I was going to be stuck again and had to wait for a few more minutes again as the she tried to get down the second climb. Luckily it wasn't as long as the first, but she still didn't step aside and allow anyone to pass, so I made a slightly sketchy move to get around her as she was still blocking the path on the ridge and moving slow. I can understand that she wasn't comfortable on the terrain and don't have a problem with that, but she should have stepped aside after the first downclimb to allow the 10ish runners to go by that had been waiting for her.

The rest of the ridge is fairly technical, so I took it easy, but still passed 4-5 runners on my way down to Smugglers Gap. I pushed it faster than I normally would on a training run, but still didn't get out of control or move too fast because there were a lot of rocks and roots and the trail was steep going down to Smugglers. At SG aid I pulled off my hydration vest as I ran up to the table and quickly opened up my bladder to get some water. The volunteers said I couldn't take too much, so I had them put in about 15 ounces and I hurried to get my vest back on and started the run down on the Smugglers Gap trail. I was now alone for the first time during the race and I ran for at least a mile by myself. Again I ran faster than I normally would have, but still stayed in control because the trail is a bit sketchy in places.

After about a mile I saw 3-4 runners ahead and within a few minutes I had passed them. I don't usually pass anyone going downhill, but I was feeling really good. At the bottom there was another aid station and I drank a cup of water and one of Nuun and grabbed a gel as I started to run down the canyon. As I took the gel a pretty fast runner passed me, but I was running a 7:20 pace and didn't want to push it under 7, so I just tried to keep that pace and knew I could do it for the 5+ miles to the finish. My hamstring has been bothering me for the last 4 months and it felt pretty good until this last section. It was pretty sore and my legs were feeling it from the climb up to Little Black, but it never got too bad.

At about mile 12 a girl and guy caught up to me and the 3 of us paced together all the way to the finish. We took turns leading, but we stayed together most of the way back. It was really good to have someone to help push the pace because my legs were really feeling wrecked the last few miles and it was getting hot. I ran out of water with about 3 miles to go and the only thing I drank was a small cup of water at the last aid station. My two new friends didn't stop, so I had to pick it up a bit to catch back up. When we were on the canyon road we were running a solid 7:20 pace, but when we got back onto the trail it was tougher to keep that up and we went over an 8:00 pace for the first time since getting off of the Smugglers trail.

With about a mile to go I was feeling really good, so I picked up the pace and dropped my two pacing friends. I had been passed by a couple of guys and I was trying to finish strong. I ran a high 6, low 7 pace to the finish passing one more guy about 100 meters from the end. I finished in 3:05 which was 5 minutes slower than I had hoped, but I was happy with my race because I pushed it as hard as I could have and felt like I ran the best race that I had in me. I maybe could have pushed it harder on the way up, but I might have blown up on the way down. I guess I need more experience with knowing just how much I can push in these races, but I do know that I gave a solid effort and I am happy with the result. I have no idea what place I came in because I haven't seen the results yet. This is an incredible race and I hope to do it again next year.

My legs were pretty sore and I wanted to get out of the heat so I took the family to Brighton to hike up to Lake Mary. After having lunch and then cleaning up some garbage that someone (slobs) had left behind near one of the picnic areas we hiked up to the lake. The skeeters were out in full force. It was a perfect day up there with temps in the 70's. Everyone had a great time and it was good to stretch out my legs.

My ITBs and quads are pretty wrecked. I have been rolling them out and they seem to be a touch better every time, but I haven't been this sore since Wasatch 100. I hit the gym to lift for 50 minutes (upper body/core).

4 very easy miles to shake my legs. I can't believe how sore they were after the race on Sat. I was slow.

Sugarloaf, Baldy, Hidden, AF Twins and Red stack peaks with Jun Jsh and Mark:

I think this was the best pre-work run of the year so far. Up at 3:30 to meet the guys at the LCC park n ride at 4:30. We took two cars and left one at Snowbird and then jumped into Jun's and drove to the lower Albion Basin road where we parked and started. As soon as we got out of the car we could smell smoke and it was pretty thick for the first few miles. I felt like I was back at the Ritz dance club smoking cloves circa 1990. My stomach felt like crap and we were all moving slow. At the Catherine Pass trailhead I stopped for a quick break and that seemed to help my stomach, but it didn't settle completely for about an hour. We slogged up to the top of the Apline ridge where we were greeted by the standard wind slap in the face. A few more minutes and we topped out on the first summit of the day (Sugarloaf).

After a quick break we ran the ridge over to Baldy where we stopped again and had a break. I downed a gel and then we ran over to Hidden Peak. I love this ridge! It is one of the most scenic places in the Wasatch. At the top of Hidden Peak we could see the next objective, the two summits of American Fork Twin peaks, the high point in Salt Lake County. The ridge over to AF Twins is a bit sketchy with some scrambling and Jsh decided to head down the road while we continued on the ridge.

I really loved the scrambling across the ridge, but it did slow us down a lot while we negotiated a few precarious spots. Incredible! I'll post some pictures later. After the spicy section it is a scramble up some loose rock and boulders to the top of the east twin. Another sweet view and out 4th peak over 11K for the day. Does it get any better? We ran over and tagged the west twin and then negotiated the ridge over to Red Stack Peak where we took another break.

The descent off of Red Stack is horrendous! Steep, boulders and nothing resembling a trail. It sucked, but after that we picked up the dirt road above the Gad Valley lift and ran it in back to Snowbird. Awesome!

Timpanogos with Jun and Dorsimus:

Knowing I would be running Timp in a few hours I stopped at In N Out for a Double Double with fries and then topped it off with some Coke and chocolate chip cookies. I was feeling like a million damn dollars when I met Jun and Dors at Kohlers in Highland. Dors left his car and I drove up to the Timpanookee trailhead. We had a nice look at the Grunge couloir (it's still in MattVH) and started just after 9:00 pm.

We didn't see a lot of people on the trail, but the people we did see all told us we were cool/crazy/awesome etc for running to the top in the dark. I bought a new headlamp and it felt like I had traded in my Yugo for a Ferrari. I could actually see!! It didn't seem like we were pushing that hard, but we still topped out in a respectable 2:08. It was windy and cold on top, so we grabbed a quick bite, signed the register and took off. Jun would get ahead and then stop and wait for us to catch up and just before the saddle Dors passed me and the rest of the way down went like this: Jun and Dors would run fast and get ahead and then stop and wait for me about every 10 minutes. I definitely don't push the downhills as fast as those guys and I didn't want to fall, so I just kept a nice easy pace. That trail is really technical and I took a nasty fall up there two years ago and didn't want to repeat it.

The last few miles my legs felt hammered and I could feel the effects of over 9K elevation and 6 11,000 ft. summits in the last two days. I finished about 5 minutes after the other two and Matt had taken a dive right at the end. Timp is one of the best runs/hikes in the Wasatch and it was awesome getting up there again with good friends.
