Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).  

 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Analysis:

Benjamin: splits 4:46, 4:49, 4:43 - very happy to see that, negative split, sub-14:50, no quarters slower than 73. Course PR.

Joseph, Jacob, and I were sluggish in the first 2 miles, but then found the extra gear. We were together until about half mile to go, then Joseph started putting a gap on us, and then Jacob pulled away from me in the kick. Splits 5:38, 5:44, then 5:36 for me, 5:34 for Jacob, and 5:31 for Joseph.

William - was having some mental issues, but the presence of Jenny gave him enough motivation to not get beat by her. She caught up to him in the second mile, but then he pulled away in the last mile.

Jenny - excellent run, perfect pacing, course PR.

Matthew - splits 6:25, 6:48, 6:44. Last quarter in 1:37. Improved his PR by 21 seconds.

Nate - good first 5 K. Kept up with Matthew up until about 2 miles. Needs more mileage to have better endurance.

Stephen - good first mile, then gave up. I think he was discouraged by Matthew's strength. Found a 90 quarter for the kick, though. We need to work on mental toughness.

Bonnie - has not been running, focusing on dance, but still was able to put on a decent performance. Kept up with Matthew and Nate for the first mile, then got dropped, but was ahead of Stephen, but then the lack of training showed in the last mile.

Sarah - was having some hormonal issues, but still was able to hold it together and run 25:25.

Julia - strained her back the day before the race, tried to run, but could not after the first 0.6 or so. Hopefully she can recover from this soon.

In the second heat Jacob took Mary in the single stroller, and paced Sarah, while I paced Julia with the double stroller pushing Leigha and Bella. Once it became clear that Julia would not be able to continue, I caught up to Stephen, tried to get him to shift gears, then caught up to Nate and Matthew. At that point Matthew started pulling away, so I went with Matthew, and Joseph stayed with Nate. Then once we finished I left the stroller with Joseph, and worked with Benjamin to pace the remaining runners.

Matthew ran a mile PR down the canyon (6:03). Stephen had a bit of sore throat, just ran easy. William and Joseph, and Jacob did the first interval. Joseph was done, as he was also developing a bit of a cold. Jacob tried to do the second interval, but had a problem with the side ache.

Benjamin did 12 total with an 8 mile tempo 4 up, 4 down (23:02, 20:38, closing mile in 5:00). I was quite happy about this workout.

In the first one, we dropped off Matthew and Stephen at 1 mile in 6:01 (PR for Matthew), then Chad sped up and ran 5:09, I stayed with Joseph, Jacob, and William. William and I ran 5:55 for the second mile, Joseph and Jacob were a couple of seconds ahead.

On the second interval Joseph, Jacob, Chad and I ran 5:59 for the first mile, then Chad did 5:11, Jacob 5:20, I got 5:22, and Joseph scored a DNF.

Total of 12. Matthew ran a mile time trial on the track and improved his record by 4 seconds - 6:16.3, splits 93, 92, 95, 94. This is our new family record for 7 and under. Stephen tried to run with him, but just did not have it.

In the evening Stephen wanted to try again. But all the tracks were closed. So we ended up doing a mile in front of our house on our out and back "little boy" course. He ran 6:17.8, short of his 6:09 track record, but I see it as a sign of success - he overcame the fear, and was running strong the entire time.

Benjamin did 4x1.5 down. His target was 7:12 (4:48 pace), he did 7:06, 7:08, 7:10, and 7:03 closing in 2:15 for the last half mile.

Mary ran her first mile time trial on the track in 7:50.9. Her splits were 1:47, 1:59, 2:03, 1:58. 100 was around 24, 200 51. So she got a PR in 100, 200, 400, 800 and the mile at the same time. Aside from Jenny's road PR of 7:41 holding onto the stroller, this is the fastest a girl in our family has run at the age of 5.

On the second one, Joseph and Jacob had the target of 11:44 (beat William's time), and they wanted to do it evenly paced, and Stephen was supposed to run the first mile in 6:00. So I started with him, but he was not up to the task, so I told him to stop after the first quarter, and then just sped up a bit, caught up to 6:00, then maintained it until the first mile, then shifted gears and ran 5:34. I thought I would catch Joseph and Jacob, but they also sped up and closed in 5:30/5:31 after 5:51 in the first mile.

Then I told him: "If you make it to 0.5 in 3:00, and then run your honest best, even if you do not break 6:00 then you will not get the no-treats moratorium, otherwise there will be one until you break 6:00". So he ran 86,89,89,88 and finished in 5:52 - new down the canyon PR.

Total of 16. Did 3x2 down the canyon. Chad joined us again. In the first one, Joseph, Jacob, Matthew, William, Stephen, Chad and I ran together in the first mile in 5:59, then Chad closed with a 5:03 mile, while the rest of ran 5:58. In the second interval, Chad started with us in 6:00, and closed in 5:11. Jacob, Joseph, and I ran together - Joseph was struggling, so we kept it easy. With 100 to go, I said "kick", and Joseph just flipped out, threw a fit, and slowed down to a jog, while Jacob kicked. I tried to get Joseph to go, but it was hopeless. So Joseph finished in around 11:59, I got 11:56, and Jacob had 11:54.

Benjamin was supposed to do 3x2 in 9:36, but after the first one in 9:53 it was apparent that he did not quite have it, so I told him to do one more in 10:00 and try again on Tuesday. However, on his second one Chad and I played rabbits for him, and he ran 9:44 catching us with 200 to go. We joined him and ended up with 11:45.
